uscular strains can occur almost as easily in daily life as they can on the job site or sporting field. Aches and pains arrive for a wide variety of reasons; headaches and insomnia so frequently relate to the body’s overall functionality and sense of wellbeing, whilst chronic muscular conditions can be debilitating for unfortunate sufferers. Professional massage therapy has been assisting in the treatment of these conditions for centuries and traditional methods remain successful to this day, but today’s qualified Remedial Mas-

sage Therapist is trained also in modern scientific approaches, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of the symptoms involved and of the remedy required. So when we flinch from muscles that refuse to fully cooperate, when we find that our bodies’ usual flexibility is restricted or when our shoulders hunch anxiously with that feeling “I really need a good massage”, these are irrefutable signs that shouldn’t be ignored. There are times when we can all benefit greatly from professional massage, as our bodies will generally tell us.

BODY CONTOURING AFTER MASSIVE WEIGHT LOSS AND THE “MUMMY MAKEOVER” PRIORITISATION AND A PLAN OF MANAGEMENT.

T

he correction usually starts with the abdomen and the trunk. A radical abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck“) is necessary to improve the front of the abdomen, sometimes in combination with a circumferential belt lipectomy, which takes care of the flanks and waist/upper gluteal areas. A Mons Pubis (the hair-bearing upper part of the vulva) reduction with liposuction and lipectomy is done at the same time. In addition, liposuction is done to reduce fat accumulation in the upper anterior abdominal wall, the flanks and in the trochanteric (upper side of thigh/“saddlebags“) areas. If liposuction is not required, a radical abdominoplasty can be combined with breast augmentation, using implants for correction of breast ptosis (droop), as well as a brachioplasty (correc-

tion of droopy lower arms or “bat wings“) or a medial thigh lift. If the breast tissue droop and stretch is excessive, breastreduction surgery would be required as a first stage, to be followed up by breast augmentation as a secondary procedure. Sometimes, due to the number of areas needing correction, surgery may have to be staggered, with two sessions about three months apart, with each operation limited to six to eight hours and with postopertive care in a hospital setting. Postoperative management and care is critical, as also is the use of postoperative compression garments and the restriction of activities. These major procedures need a patient to be in good general health and the acceptance that there will always be the need for some revision surgery.

AUSTRALIANS FOR

w men’s health AUSTRALIANS FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH IS A CHARITY HELPING WOMEN IN NEPAL WITH TWO CRITICAL ISSUES … GENITAL PROLAPSE, AND MATERNAL/INFANT MORTALITY. LOCAL OBSTETRICIAN AND GYNAECOLOGIST DR RAY HODGSON IS ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF THIS CHARITY, WHICH IS CURRENTLY CONSTRUCTING A MOTHERS’ AND BABIES’ HOSPITAL IN DOLAKHA.

H

i Dr Hodgson. You established a women’s health charity - now known as Australians for Women’s Health - in 2010. What was the inspiration behind its formation? The inspiration was learning of the very high prevalence of genital prolapse in Nepal - a condition where pelvic organs such as the uterus, bladder and bowel fall out through the vagina. Hundreds of thousands of women suffer this distressing condition in Nepal, including many young women in their 20s and 30s. When I first heard that the presence of this disfiguring problem was so rampant, I thought I’d join an organisation that was providing surgical treatment in Nepal - but such a group didn’t exist. That’s when we decided to start our own organisation. In those early years, our organisation existed purely for the treatment of genital prolapse. We would arrange teams of doctors and nurses to travel to Nepal to treat as many women as possible and to train local surgeons. But during our prolapse camps, we saw there was a second problem in women’s health: thousands of mothers and babies were dying. And most of their deaths were from conditions that were easily preventable. So, we decided we’d create a second arm of the organisation Maternal Health. Why do you believe the prevalence of genital prolapse is so high in Nepal? We’re still not certain why it’s so pervasive - particularly in young women - but we have some ideas formed through our ongoing research. Women in Nepal carry very heavy loads, including during and soon after their pregnancies; it’s a cultural norm. In many areas their diets are protein deficient. Women often have babies at a young age - before they’re

6 focus Special 60 greater portEdition macquarie focus.

fully physically developed themselves. And there’s often a short time between each of their pregnancies. It’s clear that preventative measures need to be a major part of the management of the prolapse problem. Among the populations you have worked with in Nepal, have you witnessed any significant changes in women’s health? We’ve made a dent in the prolapse scourge, but there are many more thousands of women who still remain untreated. As for pregnancy health, there’s been a significant fall in the mortality rate of mothers and babies. The number of these deaths has almost halved in the last six years, but we still have a long way to go. What is your current major focus in Nepal? Right now our big focus is the construction of a Mothers’ and Babies’ Hospital in the remote region of Dolakha. This region is a five hour road trip from Kathmandu. We’re at the stage where we have removed the existing old hospital building from the site, as this was severely destroyed in the earthquakes of 2015. We’re about to commence construction. The cost to build this hospital is $500,000, and so far, after 18 months, we’ve managed to raise $110,000. We still have quite a way to go, so we’re enthusiastically looking for sponsors. In recent months, we’ve become a taxdeductible charity. Our accounts are transparent and independently audited. We welcome individual donations, but we’re also really keen to attract corporate sponsors. You have a “buy a brick” facility for people who wish to help you build the hospital. How does this work? A brick costs $50 to purchase, and the purchaser’s name will be inscribed on their brick. This brick will then form part of a wall in the hospital. But, people can donate any amount they choose. It’s important to reassure people that every

cent that’s donated to Australians for Women’s Really well. We struggle with cultural barriers Health goes to Nepal. All administration costs in Nepal. Through my grandmother, Josephine Pearl Moran, I also have cultural ties to the Dhanggati nation. Connecting to country, my mob gives me a strong sense of who I am and my future aspirations. I am an activist in the revival of language and cultural practices, and support the empowerment of Aboriginal women. When and why did the Djiyagan Dhanbaan movement begin locally? Djiyagan Dhanbaan movement was formed from a number of gathering of local Aboriginal women (older, younger and girls) in 2013. It wasn’t about forming a group; it was about creating opportunities for Aboriginal women of all ages to come together to nurture wellbeing in self and others, explore their cultural identity and share cultural practices. There are a lot Aboriginal women moving to the area away from their communities; the gathering of Aboriginal women enables them to have an opportunity to socially connect, network and have an input into the community. The Djiyagan Dhanbaan movement has been made up of many groups, which gives Aboriginal women options of how they would like to participate, support or create in different spaces. "Djiyagan Dhanbaan" means "strong sister" in the Gathang language. How does this name describe the movement's philosophy and aims? The strong sister concept refers to a woman becoming strong to support self and then other women. The movement promotes selfempowerment and leadership, respecting

pilates studio

ow has the studio expansion created a new atmosphere for Bodiline Pilates? Bodiline has a contemporary new appearance. Our studio is now more roomy, bright, airy, with an impressive view of the Hastings river. There is a dedicated mat area, equipment area, and also a bar on the walls for the “barre” class. There is now room for our lululemon shop, which is exciting for the area and exclusive to Bodiline Pilates. We are also a Nationally Recognised Training centre of the Pilates Method.

How does Pilates benefit the body? Pilates is an exercise method which works on your mind, body and spirit. Pilates is a holistic practice that addresses your body as a whole, and can benefit everyone - whether you are recovering from an injury, training at an elite level or just wanting to keep your body strong and healthy. “No other exercise targets all those areas I love to work all in one session - inner thighs, butt, waist, abs.” With qualified staff, how do you tailor a program to suit specific needs or assist with

injury? An initial consultation will complete a postural screen and movement assessment to determine your individual needs and goals. At Bodiline Pilates, we utilise relationships with other Allied Health practitioners in the area and work closely with them to assist our clients with any injury management. Why do Pilates at Bodiline? Established in 1999, the studio has become well known over the past 17 years as a centre of excellence for the practice and teaching of the traditional Pilates method. Pilates is our passion and sole focus. At Bodiline we believe in teaching our clients the Pilates method and not just the Pilates exercises, to allow them to continue to reap the benefits of their Pilates practice not just in the studio, but in their everyday life as well. We have a full variety of Pilates services available, including mat classes, Fletcher towel, group equipment classes, jumpboard classes, Xtend Barre, studio and private instruction. As a training centre, we pride ourselves on our instructors upholding the highest quality of Pilates. For those new to Pilates, what would

you recommend? An initial consultation is recommended for anyone who is new to Pilates, suffering from any injuries or health conditions or who has not been practicing Pilates for a while and would like to review the important fundamentals of the practice. We are open to all ages, sizes, and men and women. If you have an injury, we can help you rehabilitate in a holistic way. If you are experienced and don't want an initial consultation, you can book in to a group class via our convenient minbody booking system via our website. A word from some of our valued clients: “We are very lucky in Port Macquarie to have excellent Pilates teachers, Caz - a Principal

Trainer, Kate- an Exercise Physiologist, along with other Bodiline staff. They are all passionate about teaching and practicing the traditional method of Pilates. Students and clients at the studio benefit enormously from their years of expertise.” “Pilates is about being focused and present and to concentrate on what you are doing. It is all about being mindful in your exercise. It does not matter if you can’t do a particular exercise. With time, you will improve and get stronger. “The people make the studio great. Our instructors are friendly and welcoming, and our studio is a nurturing, non-judgmental and nonpretentious place to grow and laugh together.”

Christie Cristoforo and Kerri Charnock from Innovate, Body + Mind Studio talk to FOCUS about their ‘Moving On Up’ fitness and yoga program designed to support women experiencing domestic violence issues in our community and the positive impact it is providing. hy did you decide to create this program to support victims of DV? Kerri: We were talking about a DV case in the media, and it turned out we had the same passionate views about violence against women. We see the positive impact yoga and fitness training has on empowering women every day in our studio; it seemed like a natural progression for us to create something to help those who need a little more support. Who else are you working with locally? Kerri: We have great support from Ruth Edwards; NSW Police Domestic & Family Violence Coordinator, local Domestic Violence Liaison Officers and also the Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Services. What are the mental health benefits of yoga and fitness? Christie: In our program, participants feel encouraged, inspired, supported, respected and for one hour a week they focus on themselves, without fear of consequence. We work through weekly themes to build confidence and reconnect with themselves, something we know goes in an abusive relationship. It was amazing to see our first participants grow; self esteem increased, postures changed, connection to their body improved and they became clearer on what they wanted for themselves. How big of an issue is domestic violence in our community? Christie: That’s a tough question to answer, because DV is under reported - Wwich is a shame, because we’ve learnt there are many great support programs available if the abuse is reported. But we also know there are emotional issues that come into play when choosing to report, which is where we hope to help. Yoga is key in developing a reconnection to the self, which can assist in building the strength and desire to report.

How do you encourage strength and confidence through your program? Kerri: Strength comes from the fitness part, which is 30 minutes of high intensity training each session, tailored to suit everyone. When we exercise, our brain releases endorphins (happy hormones) that reduce anxiety, depression and sadness. In our fitness training, participants are in a supported environment, making their own choices to participate, boosting their endorphins and enjoying themselves. It’s a relief from the stressors outside the studio. What do you hope to achieve through the DV program over time? Christie: We have goals to run this program on a larger scale and more regularly. We’d love to see it government funded one day and become a permanent part of the support programs not only here in Port, but in other areas around us where women don’t have access to this. We want participants to leave feeling stronger, more connected to who they are and what they want in life. We want to empower women to have the strength to end a violent situation, not from fear, but from self respect. How can people get more information or join the program? Kerri: Our second program will run later this year, but to do so in the way we’d like, we need some funding. We are hoping to find businesses in our community who want to be involved from a sponsorship perspective. No donation is too small to help us get this program going with the right people in place. We are open to meeting with businesses to see how supporting us can benefit them too. We see the fight against DV as a community initiative to say “enough is enough”. If anyone is in an abusive relationship or knows someone who is, email movingonupport@gmail.com to be a part of the next intake. Thanks Christie and Kerri. greater port macquarie focus Special focus. I AM WEAVING THE MANIC DANCE OF MOTHERHOOD INTO OUR DAY, WHEN THE NEWS ERUPTS: RUSSIAN PLANES IN AMERICAN FLIGHT ZONES. MY YOUNG SON BESIDE ME LISTENS SILENTLY AND SADLY. THIS IS EVEN TOO MUCH FOR ME; HOW CAN I EXPECT A NINE YEAR OLD TO UNDERSTAND HOW UGLY THE WORLD CAN BE?

ension is building globally, and what Putin, Trump, Jong-un, al-Assad don’t know is that life is tough enough without their “nuclear” warfare. Boys fisty-cuffing boys across man-made borders has a resounding impact on the primal need to protect my children, family, and peace of mind. Stress hormones are already attacking the cells of my body already - I live in the 21st Century … Don’t talk to me about Anthrax; the bio-chemical response I have to my children’s snail-like pace getting ready for school is enough to assassinate a whole army. And this is the thing, isn’t it? We are living under the insidious pressure-pump of social and political distress, and we’re wearing it like a thick fur-coat of anxiety. Busyness is the new thing, and we’re uncomfortable admitting when we’re not busy - like it’s some strain of leprosy that may be contagious. There is a social expectation of productivity, so we move faster and faster at a pace that only defeats us in the long run. But we run anyway… To stop would mean to think, and to think would mean to consider the dismal lack of power we hold against ego-maniacs who run the planet. Hey, I recycle my household waste. I turn off lights. I am doing my bit, so meet me halfway, fellas. We are mostly unaware of the miracle matrix of our bodies. We operate from a headspace distracted by technology and social media.

Urrrgh - it’s inescapable. Statistically, our teens are experiencing more mental health issues than ever before, much more than five years ago. Which equates to 2012 - wasn’t that yesterday? If this trend continues, then Trump can take a sizeable side-step, because I have two young boys whose mental health I would go to war for. Wouldn’t you? Those of us lucky enough to remember a time before the i-World (iPod iPad iTouch) might recall the wonder of actual wall-paper circa 1984, undulating scenes of autumn parks and deciduous trees that you could spend hours staring at. Everything unimaginable was “Beyond 2000”. We believed the future brought innovation, not civilian invisibility. We were not prepared for the insidious warfare technology would have on our bodies - the tragedy of a world in turmoil. The overstimulation, the rushing about and the desensitisation of big egos fighting over borders we may never see. I hope to find peace with the powers that be. Undoubtedly, it will start with the peace I make with myself and the home I make for my children - so they believe in a planet that exists in the natural world beyond Microsoft and Apple Mac. For now, I think we’ll plant a herb pot and chat over a pot of tea … Melanie Lock ND, The Hollow Store. www.thehollowstore.com.au

Mindful

W

hat do you do, Sara? I’m a life coach, parent coach and mindfulness facilitator. One of my aims is to encourage and support mums (and dads and grandparents) to nurture themselves so they are then more able to nurture their children/teens. What is one of the most common issues parents have? A common issue for all parents - (but this month we are focusing on mums/grandmothers for Mother’s Day) is that there never seems enough time to nurture themselves - all the focus is on keeping the kids and other family members happy. This can easily lead to stress, burn-out and not having enough patience to be present for the kids … or not having enough time and space to learn new and creative ways to parent and make life easier and more enjoyable. If parents think about their life before kids, there were endless hours in the week to do what they enjoy doing - then something happens once we become parents and we feel guilty for taking 30 - 60 minutes to do something we enjoy. What services and support do you offer to mums/grandmothers to help them nurture themselves? Coaching: in life coaching or parent coaching we explore work/life and family balance - we can explore what makes your heart sing and what brings you a feeling of joy and peace - we can then come up with an action plan to make more of this happen in your life easily and smoothly. Heart Intentions: we have a women’s circle that meets once a month online, and we share meditations, reflections and learn how to create different mandalas to help set our intention for each month. Chakradance: this is possibly the most healing combination of dance therapy and

movement meditation that I have ever experienced - and I'm so excited to be offering it here in Port Macquarie, starting 11th May. Chakradance is truly a gift to yourself, and each week you will leave with insights into your own body, heart and soul and general wellbeing ... Mindfulness Classes and Retreats - these happen throughout the year - and I teach mindfulness in every workshop and in every coaching session. It is with simple mindfulness strategies that we can create a small “emotional holiday” or “mental break” to be able to CHOOSE how we react, rather than reacting habitually. “Children do better when they feel better.” Jane Nelson Positive Discipline: we can adapt that to “Parents do better when they feel better too!” What are some solutions for supporting mums to nurture themselves more and make life less stressful? • 15 minutes every day, 1 - 2 hours a week, 1 - 2 days per month. • Put your needs first at least some of the time - then you can more easily meet the kids’ needs • Role model to kids how to nurture themselves as adults • 5 minute mindfulness exercise in the morning or afternoon (e.g. the Smiling Mind App) or as kids sleep/have quiet time during the day • Learn to do the Mindful PAUSE - a quick 10 second strategy when feeling stressed … Mother’s Day Competition: Email sara@ mindfulparentingmindfulcoaching.com to enter the Mother’s Day Competition. Prizes: One free parent coaching session valued at $95 and a Free 10 Mindful Minutes book to give away to two lucky mums/grandmums. It’s a sobering statistic that one in two Australians will receive treatment for a mental health condition in their lifetime.

New Pap Smear Guidelines are a sign of the times.

D

id you know Pap Smears are changing at the end of the year? New technology means that Pap smears are getting an update. A newer, more sensitive test is being introduced. This means you can be given the all clear for five years instead of two. A combination of this new test and the school Gardasil (cervical cancer) immunisation also means young women don’t need to have their first test ‘til age 25. There has been a little bit of concern in some circles about this, with fears that some cancers might not be picked up. Rest assured, even with the later starting date and increased time between smears, we expect to pick up 15% more cancers with the new test. (The Pap smear is almost 100 years old, so it was about

time for an update!) The sample will still be collected in the same way, so the difference will all be in the laboratory. However, there will now be a self collection option for women who can’t or won’t have a Pap test, for whatever reason. This is not quite as good as a standard test, but is a much better option than not being screened at all. If you have a friend who hasn’t been for her test, make sure you let her know about this option. Lastly, it’s important to remember the Pap smear only screens women without symptoms and is not designed to detect cancers of the womb or ovaries. If you have symptoms, it’s really important to see a doctor, regardless of the result of your last Pap smear.

F

orget stranger abductions and car accidents: suicide is the greatest killer of young people in Australia. As individuals, as families, as friends and as a community, it is our job to tackle this major health issue. Mood variation is a normal part of life, as is grief reactions to loss, and burn out in response to prolonged stress. Recognising when a mental health issue is in need of support or treatment involves asking the questions, “Am I coping?” Or, to someone you care about, “RUOK?” Feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope with day to day demands of life should trigger help seeking. Building resilience is all about having a go, leaning into anxiety rather than avoiding and running from it, learning how to nurture our

N

exercise and quality sleep. These are the building blocks for good mental health. When helping others, it is good to focus on these foundations first. There are many treatments for mental health conditions, including physical exercise programmes, psychology (talking therapies), social engagement programmes and medications. Treatments should be tailored on an individual basis. The hardest step is always the first in reaching out for help. You can reach out in person (GPs can help) or by phone (Lifeline can help) or online (eheadspace can help). Let’s all work together this year to spread compassion and inclusiveness on the Coffs Coast.

Accredited Practising Dietitian

hat is your position and role at the Women’s Health Centre? I am the Dietitian and Health Promotion Manager at the Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre. As an Accredited Practising Dietitian, I see clients for a large range of individual nutritional needs, like Eating Disorders, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Weight Management (loss or gain), Food Allergies/Sensitivities, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Type 2 Diabetes, Constipation, Diverticular Disease and general healthy eating advice. As Health Promotion Manager I am in charge of running lots of new and exciting health workshops, like Zumba, fitness for older adults, healthy eating for adults, meditation, Tai Chi, self-defence and lots more. Do you have an area of focus or special interest? Poor body image and unhealthy dieting strategies has been a common thread in a lot of my clients, so I have become passionate about helping clients establish a healthy relationship with themselves and with food. Over the past few years at the Women’s Health Centre and headspace I have seen a large number of clients who have disordered eating behaviours, whether this is through diagnosed eating disorders or those who just have an unhealthy relationship with food, such as yo-yo dieters and emotional eaters. It’s a complex area to work in, so I am constantly honing my skills by completing regular professional development in eating disorder management and counselling techniques such as motivational interviewing to facilitate behaviour change. This, along with working closely with experts in the disordered eating field, ensures my clients receive the highest quality evidenced based service and care. For the past five years, I have also been a

consultant dietitian for a few aged care facilities both here and the USA (my native homeland!) and am passionate about nutritional management for the older population as well. What is one piece of nutrition advice you can give to women reading this? Moving away from labelling foods as “good” and “bad” can be an important first step to developing a more healthy relationship with food for you and your family. When we use these labels, we tend to restrict ourselves from ever eating the “bad” foods. Unfortunately, doing this makes our brain want them all the more. This restriction and deprivation most often leads to overeating or binge eating and then feeling guilty and/or ashamed. This forms a never ending cycle of restrict, binge, restrict, binge over and over again. By learning mindful and intuitive eating, along with changing our relationship with food, we can allow ourselves to enjoy a variety of foods without the guilt and without assigning a moral value to food. Best of all, we still get to eat all the foods we love. Food is just food, and eating it should be an enjoyable experience. Sure, some foods are healthier than others and we should aim to eat a balanced, healthy diet to nourish our bodies but banning those foods that are “bad” is not the solution. I can assist my clients in learning how to eat mindfully and break away from food rules and start to enjoy food again. How can people come see you? Men and women just have to give us a call at the Women’s Health Centre on 6652 8111 to book an appointment time with me. Alternatively, you can be referred by your GP if you qualify for Allied Health Services under Medicare’s Chronic Disease Management Plan. Jetty Village Pharmacy

Coffs Naturology Often we forget what real wellness feels like, and we will accept a vague collection of symptoms such as feeling tired, foggy thinking, difficulty sleeping, and craving coffee, sugar and salt as normal. It is all too easy to put it down to either being a busy mum, work stress, or even ageing. But it really doesn’t have to be that way. I have found that restoring health to balance and vitality allows all other areas of your life to thrive as well. My aim is to discover the underlying cause, which might be food intolerances; genetic, environment or lifestyle factors; poor mineral and vitamin absorption; hormone imbalance; or a combination of these. From there, I develop a personal treatment path using solid nutritional science and Western herbal medicine, to help you feel truly amazing again. New developments in Naturopathy: the science of nutrition, and herbal medicine is getting incredibly compelling, with more research happening in natural medicine. I am particularly excited about the emerging science of epigenetics, which looks at how we can influence our genetic blueprint through nutrition, and I now offer nutrigenomic testing in clinic. It is fascinating and provides clues on why certain foods and nutrients work well for some people, but not for others.

At Jetty Village Pharmacy we are passionate about women’s health and we love talking with women about ways to be the healthiest woman they can be. No doubt the most important way to achieve this is by first taking care of oneself, but unfortunately for a lot of women today this is the last thing on the never-ending list of things to do. A woman takes on many roles, from wife and mother to housekeeper and employee to nurse and counsellor. At the pharmacy we find the chat that occurs between our pharmacy staff and a female customer is about her children, partner or older parents. With so much to discuss and so many people to worry about we find these women can often neglect their own health. Making time to maintain good health is crucial, for yourself and your family members. Stress can cause many serious health problems which can affect your mental and physical health with symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, upset stomach, high blood pressure, muscle tension and feeling overwhelmed. How much harder is to get things done when experiencing symptoms like those? Stress should not be overlooked as ‘just part of our daily lives’, as women we need to remember that yes we can do anything, but not everything. Talk to a health professional about ways to learn to read your own body, recognise the early symptoms of stress and manage these before it amplifies into a chronic health condition.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL TIME IT IS FOR YOU, NOW THAT YOU’RE A MUM. YOU PROBABLY SPEND A LOT LESS TIME ON YOUR HAIR THAN YOU DID PRE-BABY.

et’s face it: when your kids are little, some days it’s a major accomplishment just to grab five minutes to have a shower. But that doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to an endless string of bad-hair days. For expert solutions to the most common hair problems that mothers of young children complain about, read on. • “My hair is looking really dull and lifeless.” Answer: Use an Intensive moisturising treatment. Just like the rest of your body, your hair needs vitamins to stay healthy and strong. Treatments are designed to help repair dry and damaged strands by penetrating your hair’s cuticles and replenishing moisture. After all your body has gone through, it deserves the extra love. Also, make sure you are using the correct range for your hair type; if it is fine, use something that won’t weigh it down. If it’s blonde, use a purple shampoo to keep it toned brightly. If it is thick and curly, use something that will add lots of shine and defrizz. • “How do I deal with my wispy post pregnancy hair?” Answer: Use a leave-in conditioner. About 80 percent of clients lose more hair than normal after the birth of their babies. It is a temporary thing; the new hair is growing back, but it takes time, so you have to go through a period when you have a lot of baby hair. The solution is to use leave-in conditioner cream. When this new hair is moisturised, it will lie better and not stick up, which is caused

by static. • “How do I deal with grey roots while I’m pregnant or breast feeding?” Answer: Try foils. Products that completely colour your hair aren’t recommended during pregnancy or breast feeding, because the chemicals can be absorbed in the skin through your scalp. However, with the advances of colour, Living Doll has a gentle NO AMMNONIA colour that will work perfectly to cover those “natural highlights”. However, foil highlights are even safer, because the product touches only your hair, and not your scalp. You can also try lowlights, which are darker strands that will hide most of your roots and allow your own hair to grow out, without being so noticeable. • “I’m tired of wearing the same old ponytail every day.” Answer: Update your do. If the ponytail style works best for you, try experimenting with different variations. For instance, make it higher or lower than you normally do. Or either messier than usual, or super neat. Sometimes the simplest hairstyles are the most stunning. Or thinking of having a shorter bob, maybe this is your time for that changed you always wanted. But be warned, ask your stylists if it will suit your hair, as you don’t want to create any more work for yourself … or you may want to shave it all off in frustration. Good luck, ladies, and can I ask, when will we ever get to sleep again? XO Dolls.

Novotel Coffs Harbour Pacific Bay Resort has been a part of the Coffs Coast community for over 20 years. Being part of the Accor family, we believe in the importance of giving back to the community and supporting those less fortunate.

Park Beach Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic Women’s Health Physiotherapy focuses on preand post-natal experiences, urinary incontinence, lumbo-pelvic pain, prolapse, post-urogenital surgery and all of the other wonderful facets of a woman’s intricate and constantly changing physiology. We work to empower and enable women to re-connect with and take control of their bodies, to re-establish an independence and confidence that we all deserve to enjoy. As a woman, I have a profound interest and respect for the incredible things our bodies do, an empathy for when they don’t perform as we’d like them to, and a passion for helping other women to understand and heal their bodies.

hroughout the year we support numerous charities and fundraising events, but last year when one of the conference staff became aware of the “It’s in the Bag” campaign, we recognised a very deserving cause that we were very happy to support. The campaign was to donate a handbag full of small items that a woman in need would find helpful, such as toiletries. The hotel staff all showed their support, and the hotel was set up as a collection point for the local community. The response was wonderful, with hundreds of bags collected for women in need; the organisers were very overwhelmed by the support, and trying to load the cars full of bags was a very rewarding experience. The latest “Share the Dignity” campaign is one that most women take for granted: the easy access to sanitary items. Some of the Novotel Coffs Harbour Pacific Bay Resort staff wore pink to promote the worthy Share the Dignity cause. Novotel Coffs Harbour Pacific Bay Resort has once again agreed to be a collection point, so please read through the information below and show your support for women in need by dropping your donations at the hotel. Every woman deserves her dignity, and a small donation will make a big difference in someone’s life. **According to homelessnessaustralia.org.au; there are currently 105,237 people in Australia who are homeless; 44% of these people are female.** **That equates to 46,305 homeless Australian women.** For many Australian women, dealing with their monthly period is something they take for

I believe in and utilise an integration of a whole-body approach to Physiotherapy and granted. It may mean a quick dash to the shop for Clinical Pilates with all of my patients, and enjoy last minute supplies or possibly some discomfort for a few days, but beyond that, for the most part, it is fairly easy to continue with everyday life.

educating them on the individual nature of their symptoms. We explore whether the cause of their urinary incontinence is due to a loss of strength of, or an increase in tension in the pelvic floor muscles; the effect of a failed load transfer through the pelvis and how that can be driven by a loss of control of other regions of the body; how our posture and movement patterns affect our breathing, and hence our body’s ability to effectively use our diaphragm, the result of this on our pelvic floor contractility, and so much more. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to share my experience and knowledge in my hometown of Coffs Harbour, having recently joined the Park Beach Physiotherapy team. Hayley Reynolds, Physiotherapist & Clinical Pilates Instructor.

For homeless women in Australia, their monthly period is something very different. There is no ducking to the shop for last minute supplies, the price of sanitary items often beyond their limited resources. When faced with the decision of buying pads and tampons or feeding their family, these women will always put themselves last and go without sanitary items. Discomfort for these women takes on another meaning when faced with no way to keep clean during a natural process. So how do these women manage their period? Makeshift pads of wadded up toilet paper, newspaper, socks, using public restrooms in an attempt to remain clean and feel some level of personal dignity. Share the Dignity believes that access to sanitary items should be a right, not a privilege, and with the support of the Australian public, their team of over 1,000 volunteers across 200 Australian locations have successfully collected over 450,000 packets of pads and tampons in an 18 month period. The ongoing nature of a woman’s period means that each year this supply is exhausted, and the charity relies on donations during their April and August #dignitydrives to continue the supply of products to homeless women. The first of Share the Dignity’s 2017 sanitary drives will kick off on 1st April 2017 and run for the month of April, with local collection points found on the charity’s website. www.sharethedignity.com.au focus Special 23 coffs coast Edition focus. 49

• Hydrate - dry skin is a key indicator of dehydration. Increasing your daily dose of H20 will benefit you inside and out! Using a heavier and more nourishing moisturiser will also be beneficial for the cooler months. • Exfoliate - amp up your exfoliation! Using a granular or enzymatic face scrub, 1-2 per week, will remove dead skin cells and reveal a brighter, hydrated and more youthful complexion • Protect - SPF is still a must! Use a moisturiser with a built in SPF for protection not only from sunburn, but UVA rays cause significant damage and are a major factor of fine lines and wrinkles.

SURVIVAL TIPS AND TRICKS FOR YOUR SKIN DURING THE COOLER MONTHS OF THE YEAR. • Vitamins - vitamins for your skin can be more beneficial than consuming them! Vitamin A, B, C + E serums are amazing for achieving targeted results for skin concerns such as pigmentation, sun-damage, redness, dryness, fine lines + wrinkles, acne. • Lips - these are the one part of your face that does not contain an oil gland or pores, which makes them much more likely to dry out. Use Vaseline before bed each night to nourish. • Cleanse - using a hydrating cleanser that is gentle will be beneficial for the cooler months; cream cleansers in winter are great! Consult with your therapist about what is the best range for your skin!

INVISALIGN IS THE GREATEST ADVANCEMENT IN ORTHODONTICS TO DATE. This treatment method uses virtually invisible aligners to move your teeth into position, and at Taree Orthodontics we’re recognised as a Platinum provider of this treatment. Invisalign doesn’t use brackets and archwires to straighten your teeth. Instead, this method uses clear plastic aligners which look a little bit like thin sports mouthguards to guide your teeth into place. The process begins with 3D imaging equipment, which we use to create your smile. This means we can see what your smile will look like after treatment, before you’ve even begun! The images we take are then used to create custom-made aligners, designed specifically for the condition of your teeth. These aligners exert mild pressure on the teeth that need correcting in order to straighten your smile and will be changed approximately every manning-great lakes focus. 40 28 focus Special Edition

two weeks as your teeth move. One of the greatest benefits of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable. This means you can take them out to eat, brush and floss and at other times during the week, such as client meetings or evenings out. However, for best results the aligners must be worn for 22 hours a day. Any less, and you could delay your treatment time. Invisalign is viewed as the ideal cosmetic treatment and offers solutions for both adults and children. Saying this, as a cosmetic treatment it is not as effective as traditional braces for some severe issues. Depending on the nature of your malocclusion (bad bite) we may recommend a different solution. Book a free consultation today to find out more about Invisalign.

HealthWISE New England North West is about advancing the wellbeing of our community.

ell us about HealthWISE and the services it offers In Armidale? We provide a range of allied health, mental health and Aboriginal health clinical services across the New England North West, New South Wales. Here in Armidale we have a great team of health professionals. Amanda and Val work in Aboriginal health supporting clients with mental health needs and managing chronic disease. Letecia is one of our primary health care nurses. She organises events across the area, especially in small communities, to promote healthy lifestyle and access to services. Kate is one of our mental health clinicians, who sees clients here in Armidale, as well as in Walcha. Cate coordinates the memory assessment program to assist in early and accurate diagnosis of dementia. Brent is part of our operations team and is an IT whizz! I am the Dietitian on the team. At HealthWISE, we are committed to providing integrated health care, so we work as a team whenever possible.

HealthWISE was established in 2015 to provide primary and preventative health activities specific to the needs of our various communities. We acknowledge Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network, the Department of Health, NSW Rural Doctors Network and the NSW Ministry of Health as major HealthWISE funding partners. How did you end up working in Armidale? I am an Accredited Practicing Dietitian, and have been working for HealthWISE and living in Armidale since October 2015. Before this, I worked in community Dietetic roles in Innisfail and Cairns and in private practice in Brisbane. I studied at the University of Queensland and I have a Masters in Dietetic Studies, Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Nutrition. What do women particularly find challenging when it comes to diet? Portion size is an area where many women go astray. It is important to manage portions, even when eating really healthy foods. We all tend to go overboard with the portions of red meat. Most of my clients also don’t eat enough fruit

and vegetables. Of course, snacks and alcohol can also be an area where women are looking to improve. How can you assist women and their families when it comes to healthy eating, and especially fussy eaters? There is a lot of good information around healthy eating, but it can also be confusing and advertising can be misleading. I work with clients to develop personalised eating plans or medical nutrition therapy plans to meet their individual needs and goals. I can assess women’s nutrition needs and most importantly, we can sort out nutrition fact from fiction! For children, especially fussy eaters, I can

assess nutritional status, growth and nutritional requirements of infants, children and adolescents. Eating habits and behaviours during infancy and childhood influence longterm health. If a child refuses to eat entire food groups or textures or becomes upset when offered new foods, then I can certainly help with suggestions and guidance. It takes time, perseverance and patience, and I can support mothers to develop healthy habits for their families. How can people get in touch? Telephone me on 6771 1146 to book an appointment. The HealthWISE office in Armidale is at 214 Rusden Street.

nd find that now it stops in your court and mine. The Armidale region finds itself at an important point in its history and in what could be underestimated as "challenging times". It’s a funny-bunny district in lots of ways, acting as though we have a population of 500,000, but not marketing ourselves to show how we stand out, telling our stories so other people take notice. We tend to act as a terrestrial island, busy within our own boundaries to the exclusion of our potential and attracting new citizens to contribute. We can’t look back and want the past - we need to get out there. The city and the university need each other to function and indeed, to remain viable. And yet I hear that that old elusive Town and Gown image has never been weaker. How fixable! Firstly, the university needs a proper presence in the centre of the city - Head Tenants in the Old Courthouse would be a big first step. Events open to the general public would attract townspeople and help "fold in" the concept of a true university city. UNE’s putting a lot of investment into agriculture and the natural sciences - vital in the new economy. The world must be fed and many city-born people haven’t a clue what goes into filling supermarket shelves - too busy worrying about their mortgages! There’s been a lot of publicity about future jobs needing a fluid education across disciplines to cope with future needs. It‘s the non-routine jobs that require creativity and are hard to automate. Only one stream in education doesn’t seem to be what will cut it down the track. The new Business Incubator’s recent speaker, Alan Jones, went to Silicon Valley, ended up a Director of Yahoo and now Blue Chilli as well as being a sounding board and potential venture-capitalist for start-ups. People are thinking outside corporate and about more individual small businesses. Starfish Initiatives, a local sustainability operative, has just launched a foundation, kicked off with a private $500,000 donation. Have you noticed that NBN’s fibre-to-the node strategy seems to be coming unstuck?

Here we are in Armidale, with fibre to the premises. For our region to “unleash the possibilities" as our new slogan says, we can’t potter on "as you were", thinking that projects like the new airport are enough. Embracing change needs energy from our leaders, with a new, invigorated and streamlined Council in September bringing fresh ideas, free of the animosities and delays of the past. Other regions are stirring - we can’t be left behind when other regional places with many fewer advantages get attention. Lindy Hume, theatre and festival director, has written a Quarterly Essay titled "Restless Giant: changing cultural values in regional Australia". Lisa Havilah, Director of Carriageworks, the "country’s fastest growing cultural precinct", has a regional background which trained her to make the best of opportunities and not see cultural boundaries. There are certain moments when I make memories here: the Vietnamese dancing group outside the Town Hall at April’s Carnivale with different groups and heritages joining in and children doing their best to dance down the poles and back to the beginning - it was joyous. Another memory - the Armidale Youth Orchestra under the deodars in gentle misty rain at a fundraiser at Chevy Chase, with the audience holding coloured umbrellas over the young players; and sitting warming around a fire with soup bubbling, yarning while some people made clapsticks at the Community Garden at Narwan Village. Some memories are painful - the Folk Museum’s Great War exhibition, with the terrible waste of war on display reminded us of those we’d lost, like my uncle from Uralla. Just because our region sits outside the mad, vulnerable hurry in the big cities doesn’t mean we can’t take up challenges and take on the world. We don’t want to live down to our expectations when we don’t need to. Serious ball, our court. Susie Dunn. P. S. Since managing Saumarez, Les Davis has certainly picked up that particular ball and run with it!

is evidence to suggest that children and young people in care are more likely to reach the best possible outcomes when there is contact and involvement with their family; this can be biological parents, siblings, extended family and significant others. The amount of involvement and contact with biological family varies on a case by case basis. Even with long term care and adoption, there is some form of contact for children and young people. Where possible, we try to ensure the child has meaningful and regular contact with their family. Who can become a foster carer? And how? Children and young people who require foster care come from diverse and varied backgrounds, as do foster carers. We need people who want to make a difference, people who want to create strong outcomes for the future, people who can support someone in being the best person they can be. Carers may be married, single, gay, straight, own their home or rent, be young or older and be from any cultural background. We are looking for everyday people who are interested in providing all types of care, including overnight, emergency, respite or permanent care. We are also looking for those people who want to adopt, or to provide a permanent home to a child in need. Walker Family Chiropractic Tarryn, tell us about your qualifications as a chiropractor? I knew what I wanted to do with my life from the age of 14. I grew up in Canada, where I used to go to the chiropractor with my mother. I always felt so good after an adjustment and was fascinated to learn how the nervous system controls the body. After receiving my Health Science degree, I moved to Australia to pursue Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and Masters of Chiropractic degrees at Sydney’s Macquarie University. That’s where I met my husband and business partner, Armidale boy Chris Walker. We have two young children. I’ve been practicing for 11 years and continue to learn, keeping on top of advances in our field. What services do you offer female patients at Walker Family Chiropractic? As a woman and a mother, I offer a comfortable

setting for those who prefer a female practitioner. I have a special interest in women’s health, pregnancy, newborns and children. The body changes rapidly during pregnancy. New mothers can experience upper-back pain, and neck and shoulder discomfort from holding and feeding bub. Chiropractic may help by reducing pain, as well as improving mobility, flexibility and nervous system function. Parents often bring their babies in for help with feeding and attachment, digestive disturbances and concerns about head shape. I also see babies who have difficulty turning their heads. I frequently work with other health practitioners for the best results. What do you particularly like about treating women patients? Women have great intuition into their own health. They want to get to the root of the issue and work on prevention.

ELLA BACHÉ LOOKS INTO FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE THAT FRESH COMPLEXION FOR A NO MAKEUP, MAKEUP LOOK THAT WILL LEAVE YOU GLOWING. Invest in Premium Quality Products Investing in a good skin care regime will, in time, see your skin reap the benefits of a smooth and glowing complexion. At Ella Baché, we recommend a skin diagnosis, as this will give the therapist an in depth understanding of your skin and the products and treatments it will need to complement it. Adopt a Skincare Regime Once you have invested in the products, it’s time to adapt a skincare regime. Cleansing morning and night will assist in removing dirt, grime and dead skin cells on the surface layer of the skin. It’s the most important step in your skincare regime, and it is imperative that you are using the right cleanser for your skin.

Skip the Foundation There is nothing less natural than a thick foundation that clogs your skin’s natural complexion; opt for a BB cream that combines the benefits of a moisturiser, sunscreen and foundation in one tube.

It’s All in the Eyes Super pumped up black lashes have their appeal, but are a far cry from the natural look. Instead, try a long lasting lash tint. Whilst lash tints aren’t as thick as mascaras, they do darken the lash and provide smudge proof definition for up to four weeks.

Eyebrows being a hot topic this season means skip that waxing appointment, and let those brows grow! If this sounds like a daunting idea, invest in an eyebrow pencil suited to your hair colour with a comb, and create a natural shape in the morning whilst combing your eyebrows in an upward motion. With the skincare routine down pat and some simple makeup tips and tricks you’ll have that no makeup, makeup look that’ll leave everyone wondering where you got your glow.

Although the autumn leaves are starting to fall and we are preparing our gardens for winter, it is important that we look forward to the beautiful springtime and put the St Peters Garden Weekend in our diary. The St Peters Garden Weekend is on again over the weekend of November 4th and 5th, with gardens being open from 10am to 5pm. After all the beautiful rain and growth we have had over summer and autumn, the spring gardens will be magnificent. In 2017, there will be ten gardens open in the Armidale area. We are also planning some art displays and hope to have some musicians to entertain us in some of the gardens over the weekend. As usual we will have the St Peters Parish Centre open, with stalls and morning tea and lunch, and the St Peters Cathedral will be open over the weekend. Our prices will be the same as last year: Weekend Pass - $40, Single Garden Entry - $5, Daily Bus ticket (a minibus trip which includes the bus fare and garden entry to selected gardens for one day) - $45. This year is also a special year, as we mark the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba, and on Saturday the 4th at 12pm there will be a commemorative service in the Cathedral alongside the Hunter River Lancers. We invite all to come and commemorate this significant point in history with members of the Armed Services.

For further information, please contact the Committee Secretary Coral Thrift on mobile 0407 537 016 or by email coralthrift11@ hotmail.com - we would encourage you all to invite friends from other places so that they can come and enjoy Armidale in spring.
