Orthodontic TREATMENT

Ladies

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT IS THE AREA OF DENTISTRY THAT INVOLVES MOVING THE JAWS AND TEETH IF THEY ARE INCORRECTLY POSITIONED TO IMPROVE HOW THE PATIENT SMILES AND ALSO HOW WELL THEIR TEETH FUNCTION.

T

he benefits are: better aesthetics, it’s easier to clean and care for the teeth and gums and also a more ideal bite, which can help with function and in some cases relieve dental and jaw pain. Orthodontics use either fixed or removable appliances to gradually move the teeth. Fixed appliances are generally the traditional metal brackets and wires, but another great option, particularly for adults, is Invisalign. Invisalign

uses clear removable plastic aligners which are changed every two weeks to gradually move your teeth in the same way as traditional braces. As our population is living longer, there is a huge shift towards adults seeking out orthodontic treatment. Every smile is important, and misaligned teeth can contribute to oral and systemic health problems. As long as you have teeth in healthy bone, it’s never too late to improve your smile.

he unique concept of Golf Ladies First was formed in October 2015, with a part of the main Pro Shop at Port Macquarie Golf Club being transformed into an area exclusively for ladies’ golfing needs. No. 1 cause of blindness by Tony Hanks. “Macular Degeneration Awareness Week” is occurring this month, so what can we really do to be more aware? The most important things are that this is now the main cause of blindness in Australia; and once the damage has occurred, the lost vision is unlikely to be recovered. It’s Serious: Of all the Australians over 50 years of age, 1 in 7 have signs of macular degeneration. That’s a serious statistic. Like cancer, all of us will know someone who is affected. The effects of macular degeneration are devastating. The disease affects the central vision, so affected patients lose the ability to read, drive, watch TV and recognise faces. Once again, that’s a serious result. Symptoms: Among the first symptoms of macular degeneration is difficulty reading small print. Others include shadows or distortions when looking at a grid or drawing. Prevention: The first and most important step is to have your eyes examined and have the macula area in both eyes checked. Don’t ignore any symptoms and make the best possible diet and lifestyle choices. Call in to Eyecare Plus to receive a free booklet summarising our recommendations for the best diet and lifestyle options to minimise your risk of macular degeneration.

Tai Chi has been around for many years and is a way of maintaining physical and mental health. It is an art form strengthening bodily functions, developing one’s intellect and elevating one’s centre of feeling. Based on the theory of Yin and Yang in ancient Chinese philosophy, it helps promote self esteem and physical health. Throughout most of its history, Tai Chi was kept secret and only taught to family members or trusted students. With today’s hectic lifestyle, people are looking for ways to improve their health and wellbeing and to release daily pressures, settle the mind and relax the body. Tai Chi has been proven as a way to achieve this. There is only one way to practice Tai Chi. That is to learn gradually, one movement at a time, and to develop a stringent practice routine which requires patience and perseverance to gradually “master” each form. There are 40 or 50 forms or movements in Tai Chi. These forms are simply choreographed into hand and step patterns involving handwork, footwork and legwork. For beginners, we must start with the basics. One must lay a good foundation at the very beginning to give the student confidence. The emphasis on the practice of Tai Chi are gentleness and continuity. The shift from one movement to the next should be done in a circular motion, evenly and continuously. Classes for beginners and advanced students will begin shortly in Port Macquarie with an internationally recognised Master who has many years’ teaching experience in Asia, North America and Australia. Special classes utilising weapons such as double edged swords, broadswords and fans are included for those who seek to enhance their Tai Chi skills. World Tai Chi Day: Demonstration and tutorial at the Girl Guide Hall on Hollingworth St on Saturday 30th April at 10am.

Jack BODICOACH

I’m sure you’ve seen the signs, drove past the location and heard about Jack Lipman’s new fitness and health studio. BodiCoach is now open, and we catch up with owner Jack to find out more about this great studio.

H

i Jack, can you tell us about BodiCoach and how the business got started? BodiCoach - established in early 2016 by a professional trainer/fitness and nutritional expert (Jack Lipman). At BodiCoach, our main priority is the client, and we make sure our clients always get the desired results to reach their goals in mind - whether it’s weight loss, weight gain, injury rehabilitation or even that photo shoot they have always dreamed about. We have the firsthand experience and knowledge to bypass the confusion and get you into AWESOME shape at affordable/flexible prices. What experience do you have in the industry, and when did you first start doing personal training? I have been in the fitness industry for 10 years now - I first started training with free weights in my early teens to strengthen my core after a serious back injury through a competitive sporting background and being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. I soon realised a healthy lifestyle through nutrition and strength training was the only way I was ever going to overcome my health concerns. Starting out as a customer, I soon progressed working in gyms around Cairns and studying through Far North Queensland TAFE. At first it was a hobby helping clients with all aspects of their life - not just the training side of things. I soon become well known for developing a strong relationship with my clients and taking the time with each client in order to reach their health and fitness goals with a realistic and holis-

10 focus 64 greater Special port macquarie Edition focus.

tic approach. I know exactly how daunting it can be walking into a gym for the first time. This made me realise the customer deserves a quality service - in order to keep that client and to reach the desired results for the client, so it’s a win-win for everyone. What goals do you have for the business, and how can BodiCoach help the everyday person with their heath and fitness? I’m all about the client - I make sure all my clients get results - building friendships and awesome bodies with a whole lot of fun along the way! A holistic approach with realistic, achievable goals - I want to make people feel good about themselves and to be confident to take their shirt off at the beach or get back into their favourite jeans! Some days we can get caught in a moment and become frustrated with day to day life - I'm here to help the client through the crap days and turn them into awesome days with a new powerful mindset. A balanced life starts with a balanced diet and making sure we are eating the right foods at the right time in order to maximise our workouts and speed up recovery and results. The hidden health benefits behind strength and conditioning are endless for young and old - there really are NO excuses, and I’m not joking! What is the best advice you can offer someone who is looking at starting the health and fitness journey? Best advice: be true to your diet nutrition is everything! I’m hesitant to train people if their diet isn't on par and balanced for their body type. What types of services do you offer

with BodiCoach? We offer: • one-to-one hands on personal training. • Tailored month to month meal programming. • A grade supplements to give you the edge. • Gym memberships (no lock in; no sign up fee). A different kindof fat FINDING THE BALANCE

Finding the perfect balance of exercise and nutrition for optimal health is no easy task. Each person’s body is different, and there is no clear cut amount of exercise or food that is perfect for everyone - variations exist in metabolism, gender, hormones, past history ... and the list goes on.

A

s female participation in sport has increased, many have seen numerous health benefits such as increased fitness and improved cardiovascular health. However, a unique set of medical problems has emerged around the concept Female Athlete Triad (FAT), now termed Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) to recognise that the syndrome also affects males. In the FAT, low energy availability (with or without eating disorder), amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and osteoporosis (compromised bone strength and increased risk of fracture) may be evident individually or in combination and can significantly influence an individual’s health. The FAT may occur when, for a sustained period, the dietary energy intake of the individual does not match energy expenditure - in other words, when you regularly don’t eat enough to compensate for the level of activity you are doing. It sounds like the opposite of every piece of weight loss advice you ever heard. Reducing calories and increasing physical activity is, after all, one of the basic principles of weight loss. However, in certain circumstances, such as where the body does not have excess fat reserves to burn, this can be detrimental for the individual. For those suffering from FAT, the deficient calorie intake means the amount of energy remaining for other bodily functions is insufficient and may lead to irregularities in cellular maintenance, growth, reproduction and body temperature regulation. You see in many ways FAT occurs at the other end of the scale to obesity and is equally reflective of a loss of balance. Anyone may be affected by FAT, not just athletes. The body has no mechanism for automatically accommodating energy intake to energy expenditure. However, females

engaging in activities that emphasise leanness or endurance are at greater risk. While the prevalence of all three components is generally low, one component of the FAT may be present in a significant proportion of females. Potential risk factors may include overtraining, a competitive nature, life stressors, restricting intake or food groups, and food doctrines such as vegetarianism or veganism. Energy deficiency is a serious health concern. It can have long term consequences if not identified and treated as early as possible. Prevention rather than treatment is a priority, and education has an important role to play. With the help of a multidisciplinary team, treatment focuses on increasing energy intake and/or decreasing energy expenditure (i.e. less exercise and more food), sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake, incorporating rest days and also psychological management if appropriate. Tips for achieving balance: • Don’t just live on the treadmill; incorporate strength, stamina and suppleness into your training. Do not neglect stretching and gentler forms of exercise such as beach walks and yoga. • If you are stressed and/or tired, let your body rest and don’t force a workout. Don’t be afraid to take a couple of weeks off exercise every now or then. • Nourish your body - include non-processed sources of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats in your diet. If possible, avoid removing whole food groups. • Eat regularly, and especially before and after a workout to fuel and replenish your energy stores. • Do more of what you enjoy - find ways to de-stress. Note: if you are concerned you may be showing signs of the FAT, consult your general medical practitioner for individual advice. greater port focus macquarie Special Edition focus. 13 67

Drinking WATER

MAGNESIUM IS AN ESSENTIAL MINERAL REQUIRED BY EVERY ORGAN IN THE BODY FOR A RANGE OF ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING BONE, PROTEIN AND FATTY ACID FORMATION. IT IS ALSO ESSENTIAL IN ACTIVATING VITAMINS B AND D, RELAXING MUSCLES, REGULATING CALCIUM LEVELS AND HELPING BLOOD TO CLOT AND IS REQUIRED FOR THE SECRETION OF INSULIN.

M

any of us do not get enough magnesium in our diets. Adults require about 300 to 400 milligrams a day. Where is it found? Magnesium is found in varying levels in nuts, wholegrains, dark green vegetables, fish and meat. Rich sources include pumpkin and sunflower seeds, bran, tofu, potatoes, spinach and baked beans. The pros: • Extensive research is continuing into magnesium’s health benefits, but researchers believe maintaining adequate levels is beneficial in treating and managing the following conditions: Asthma, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, Migraines, Osteoporosis, pre-eclampsia (pregnancy-induced hypertension), premenstrual tension and Restless Leg Syndrome.

• Some studies indicate that magnesium deficiency increases the risk of postmenopausal Osteoporosis and increasing magnesium intake may prevent the bone loss that leads to Osteoporosis. • Magnesium is also thought to play a role in the sleep cycle. How to take it: Everyone needs to make sure they have adequate magnesium levels. See a dietitian if you think you do not get enough from your diet. Too much stress, processed food, caffeine and alcohol, or heavy periods, can lower your levels. It’s relatively easy to become mildly deficient in magnesium, but simple dietary changes or supplements can restore your levels. Magnesium chloride supplements are generally considered to be the form that allow for the greatest uptake and availability.

WATER IS THE MAIN COMPONENT OF THE HUMAN BODY. IN FACT, THE BODY IS COMPOSED OF BETWEEN 55 AND 78 PERCENT WATER, DEPENDING ON BODY SIZE. ADEQUATE AND REGULAR WATER CONSUMPTION HAS NUMEROUS HEALTH BENEFITS. AS AN ADDED PLUS, IT HAS NO CALORIES, FAT, CARBOHYDRATES OR SUGAR.

T

he amount of water you consume every day plays an important role in maintaining a healthy body. Experts recommend drinking eight to 10 glasses of water each day to maintain good health. 1. Relieves Fatigue - If you often feel tired, there is a high chance that it could be due to inadequate consumption of water, which makes the body function less efficiently. In fact, fatigue is one of the first signs of dehydration. 3. Improves Mood - Research indicates that mild dehydration (even one or two percent lower hydration level of hydration than optimal) can negatively affect your mood and ability to think. 3. Treats Headaches and Migraines - If you have a headache or migraine, the first thing that you can do to get some relief is drink plenty of water. Headaches and migraines are

often caused by dehydration. 4. Helps in Digestion and Constipation Water also improves the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. This helps in digestion and prevents constipation. Inadequate water in the body often results in constipation, as the colon pulls water from the stools to maintain hydration, thereby making them harder and difficult to pass. 5. Aids Weight Loss - In a clinical trial, scientists found that drinking two eight-ounce glasses of water prior to meals can help suppress appetite and hence support your weight loss efforts. When you drink water, it fills your stomach and reduces the tendency to eat more. 6. Flushes Out Toxins - Water is an excellent detoxifier, as it helps flush out toxins from your body and get rid of waste primarily through sweat and urine.

HEALTHY diets

THERE ARE LOADS OF DIFFERENT DIETS ON THE MARKET FOR PEOPLE TO GET CONFUSED ABOUT THESE DAYS. SO WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

T

hat question is not so easy to answer, because we’re all so very different in many ways, including genetics, health status and the environment in which we live. Given these differences, it’s likely that a healthy diet for one person may not be so for another. For example, food allergies and intolerances are increasing in prevalence and restrict what sufferers can eat. However, they can still obtain all the necessary nutrients on a carefully planned diet. Therefore, the simple answer is

that your diet needs to be right for you. However, there are some common elements to a healthy diet that the majority of people can adopt, including: • Lots of different coloured vegetables, prepared fresh daily • Sufficient omega-3 rich foods • Regular protein intake • Moderate fruit intake • Low in fried and grilled foods, trans fats and salt • Minimal processed and packaged foods • Calories in = calories out

• Don’t skip meals • Enjoyed with other people Remember that the above is just a guide, and many people can add other foods like dairy, nuts or meat. So rather than adopting any particular diet, maybe just incorporate the healthy elements above into a balanced diet that works for you. If you’re unsure about your diet, seek advice from a health practitioner who has considerable training in nutritional medicine and who takes the time to understand you and your life. focus coffs Special coast Edition focus. 47 17

The Living Doll team aren’t fazed by seasonal changes, as we always have an answer ... Rainy autumn weather doesn’t bother the hair, but unfortunately dry and dusty heating air does - particularly if other stressors have already made their mark, because valuable moisture escapes through the little cracks in the cortex and the hair becomes inelastic and brittle. The best remedy is rich conditioning treatments that deeply regenerate and repair damage. For example, Dry Hair Mask from LaBiosthetique seals cracks, provides new softness and gives wonderfully glossy shine. Having trouble controlling your hair? We recognise that not all patients are the same because of the considerable variation in facial features. For this reason we cover a wide range of frames in different sizes. One vital feature which is often not appreciated is the size and position of the nose on the face. Some people have high broad bridges while others are lower and narrower. Bridges can also vary from relatively flat to more prominent. In the past, ladies who were smaller had a limited choice often being required to select from a teenagers range with styles that were unsuitable. The Domani Petite range caters for kids, teenagers and petite adults who appreciate a “wow factor”. In order to achieve this the company does considerable in-depth research, sourcing material from all over the world and adding the designer’s touch for hipsters. Some of the distinguishing features include clever colourations, etching, use of denim, flower petals, Swarovski crystals and studs coupled with unsurpassed quality. Our experience with the range has shown that it appeals particularly to ladies who have petite features yet still require fashionable frames To see the full range visit alanburrow.com.au. INSPIRATIONAL FITNESS INTERVIEW

TIAGARRETT 3 6 , W I F E , M OT H E R O F T H R E E B E A U T I F U L G I R L S A N D E A R LY C H I L D H O O D E D U C AT O R .

Thank you for such a positive response to last month’s story about our dynamic Dan. This month we are catching up with and profiling terrific Tia and her personal trainer Kylie Calder to hear her inspiring story.

W

hat is your diet and exercise background? I have previously put “all of my eggs in one basket”, so to speak. Either frantically exercising, or excessively dieting. I have only just started to grapple the healthy balance of both over the past 12 months. So where do you think it all went wrong? I think that the extremes of either just exercising or just dieting were unrealistic and obviously unsustainable. What motivated you to find a solution to the problem? A drive to feel and look healthier; I wanted to be able to go shopping and buy the clothes I liked. It is also very important that I am a healthy role model for my impressionable three young girls. I don’t want to provoke extreme dieting or exercise in them as they grow - just a healthy balance and body image. How did you go about making that positive change? Much of it was shifting mental blocks, excuses really, that I “didn’t have time” to go to the gym or prepare healthy meals. I started with just one PT session per week and built on that adding routines at home, then started going to the gym. The “small steps” made me realise that there is always time for the things you really want. Why did you choose Kylie as your personal trainer, and what have you been doing together to achieve your goals? I chose Kylie because she best suited my

52 coffs coast focus.

interest in functional exercise. She educates me in executing exercises safely and with maximum impact and really knows her profession. In addition to our PT sessions, Kylie develops programmes for me to do at home or in the gym. She is always keen to answer questions I have about health and fitness. What goals have you achieved so far? So far I am managing a healthy exercise/diet/ work/life/mother/wife/teacher/student balance. Phew! I am able to shop for the clothes I like to wear, my fitness levels are improving, I am feeling stronger and happier. I feel that the benefits of going to the gym and training with Kylie, being healthy, are filtering down into other aspects of my life. What are your goals for the future? To keep improving my personal “bests”: run 10 km; lose 3 - 4 kilo; spend more time being active outside with the girls. What is the most useful advice you could share with other readers? I would say to expose and push past those mental barriers that trick you into not taking that first step. Start with small changes, and soon you’ll feel empowered to do more. Stop allowing yourself to make excuses - mine was time, and now I feel I have never had so much time! Thanks for sharing, Tia, and if you’re looking to kickstart your own inspirational fitness story, drop in to see me at Coffs Coast Health Club Toormina or our NEW CLUB in MOONEE! You can also contact Kylie on 0414 257 086 to get started today. focus Special Edition 21

The Cuban Rhythm Revolution Continues … Robyn Walsh Naturopath As a Naturopath, I believe that given the right support, our bodies have the innate ability to heal themselves. With so much information out there via the internet, it is difficult to know what is right for you. It is important that you work with someone who understands your body and what it needs. I work with patients who want to get well, but seem unable to know what to do or which direction to go. Having a programme that is designed specifically for you means that your body gets the support it needs. Not a generic fix. A chronic condition that is becoming more common is digestive issues, usually caused by long term stress. These conditions vary and people suffer from one or many of the following: Food inferences, bloating, reflux; Weight gain - especially around the middle; IBS, skin rashes, unstable blood sugars. If you want to feel better and achieve long term results, I can design a programme to help your body return to optimum health. No referral necessary! I’m fully qualified, insured and can provide health fund rebates when applicable. I’m located in Sawtell at Hoys Physiotherapy, or in Coffs Harbour at Living Well Chiropractic. For enquiries or to make an appointment, please contact Robyn on 0401 375 284 or robynwalshnd@gmail.com

As a woman, you are statistically more likely to require our services, with appointments like Obstetric (pregnancy) Ultrasounds and Bone Density Testing due to an increased risk of Osteoporosis related fractures in women, plus Mammograms being regularly used in female screening. Having people who have actually been there themselves and understand the process from both a professional but also patient perspective provides that extra level of care and empathy. As well as being the practice which Bulk Bills all Medicare Services, we really do care. Dr Joseph Beaini has just returned from the 3rd Australasian Medical Aesthetic Congress (AMAC) held in Sydney. As the world leader in medical aesthetics, Allergan strives to drive innovation in the field of aesthetic medicine.

he focus this year for Joseph was the newest techniques in rejuvenation, rather than an outdated technique of changing a face to something it doesn’t suit. “We at Zinc Clinic want to rejuvenate the face, rather than change it. What my patients are asking for is to look refreshed and younger, not different or obvious, to look the best version of ourselves, to look healthy and natural,” says Joseph. The take home messages - “beautification, positive ageing and transformation”. We are now replacing deficits in bone, fat and soft tissue before they make an appearance on the external face. And the fashion trends for 2016 - “luscious lips” and “fuller, more curved eyebrows”. Most importantly, clients considering undergoing any cosmetic procedure must wipe out the images of “overdone” Hollywood stars. Many people I know talk about “ageing gracefully”. To me, that does not mean having to look like a wreck, but rather looking as good as one can for their age. Remember, Australia has a harsh environment. Anglo-Saxon skin was not meant to be exposed to this. The result: premature ageing. “The points that were emphasised at

AMAC were a thorough examination, texture, contouring, volume replacement, age appropriate treatments and that the approach to management is multifaceted as well as 3D, replacing deficits at all levels.” Examining the face is essential. A trained eye will be able to look at the face as a whole and then break it down to individual components. What is the skin texture like? Are there pores, wrinkles, redness, vessels and pigmentation? Is there adequate collagen? What areas of the face are volume depleted, and what areas need contouring and support? What deficits can be treated to improve the overall facial appearance? My patient is 60 years old. Do I really want them to look 40, or do we want them to look the best for their age and maybe several years younger? What treatments are available, and what is going to give my patient the best outcome? Joseph offers numerous treatments to fight against the tick of the biological clock. The Liquid Facelift using products such as Juvederm Voluma and Modelis Shape - these products create a lifting and contouring effect. They restore structure to sagging skin and so give a rejuvenated boost to the entire face. Products such as Esthelis, Fortelis, Juvederm, Volbella and Volift are used to

fill superficial lines and hollows, dark eye hollows as well as reducing the lip lines, by revolumising the lips to their previous youthful state or, in the terms of dark circles, changing a person who has looked tired for years. With a 30-minute procedure, we can instigate a one to two year effect. When using these products known as dermal filler, we take a step by step approach, little bits regularly to provide the most pleasing end result, which then just requires maintenance. The use of Botox remains one of the hallmark treatments when used correctly and on a regular basis, smoothing wrinkles and preventing new ones, resulting in a more youthful and radiant appearance. A more modern technique we like to employ is a relaxation of the muscles, without any paralysation of the face. And just a final word when selecting a practitioner. Choose someone that you feel comfortable with and who will provide you with an honest opinion. One treatment does not suit everyone, and Botox alone is not always the answer. Ensure that you are provided with easily accessible aftercare. Fillers, Botox and most cosmetic procedures by law require you to be reviewed by a doctor prior to them being administered.

WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Charlotte Young was recently chosen as Woman of the Year for her work in domestic violence. FOCUS sat down for a cup of tea in the gardens of Warrina Women and Children’s Refuge to find out more about her career and the award.

W

hat is your connection to the Coffs Coast? I moved to the Coffs Coast in the early ‘80s after having lived in Darwin. The territory is a beautiful place; however, I am a person who loves the change the seasons bring. Where we live has the perfect climate; the forests, the ocean and the mountains all bring me great joy. You were recently recognised as the Coffs Harbour International Women’s Day Woman of the Year. Can you tell us how you feel about receiving this award and recognition? I struggle with recognition and when my name was announced, I found myself for a moment unable to move. It was a large audience and sitting on a stage, the focus of everyone’s attention is uncomfortable for me. Initially I felt incredibly humble and overwhelmed. The women and children that I have worked for and the inspiring women I have worked with over 20 years came to me, and I very quickly found my voice. That day and winning the award forced me to reflect on my achievements. The work I have done for over 20 years in the domestic and family violence sector and my belief that all women and children have a right to live free of abuse has been paramount in the way that I work. Recognition by your peers and the broader

This is a big change, and Warrina is embracing this opportunity to bring about a new way of working in our community. What advice would you give to younger people who may be considering a career in the field? I would say we need you. There are some great courses offered by TAFE that are great starting points; admittedly like any job, this work is not for everyone. Personal experience can make this work challenging; however, with training this need not be a barrier. We have different types of roles within the organisation; we have designated CALD, Aboriginal and Children’s staff who work at the refuge and provide outreach. I would say to anyone considering this work, ring and have a chat with a team member. What are your hopes for the future? My big dream would be a community where all are equal regardless of sex, culture, religion and age. A place where violence no longer exists in the home, schoolyard, workplace or on the street. Thanks Charlotte. focus coffs Special coastEdition focus. 27 61

an you tell us about your connection with the local area? I have lived in Coffs Harbour for just over 18 years. I moved to the area just after the birth of my first child (time flies). My husband is a local specialist and had always wanted to work in a rural location; he had grown up in a country town. I grew up in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney and love the coast; Coffs Harbour was our happy compromise. We have never looked back. We now have four children who all attend local schools, our oldest currently doing her HSC and our youngest still in primary school. Our children have always been involved in sport and various activities. I also love to play netball and am currently involved in the Coffs Harbour Triathlon club. This has helped us to become enmeshed within the amazing Coffs Harbour Community. I love living in Coffs Harbour and feel privileged to be part of such a wonderful community. I could not think of a better place to have raised our family. Coffs Harbour just continues to get better, with our own local university, good schools and easy access to capital cities. What is your role and position? I work as a medical practitioner at the Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre, which has been in Coffs Harbour for longer than me. I work with an incredible group of women in a very flexible work environment. This job has allowed me to raise my family and be available for my children while having a career that I love. Do you have an area of expertise or focus? I work primarily in women’s health issues. I have expertise in the insertion of IUDS (intrauterine device). This is a device that is placed within the uterus and was developed for the management of heavy periods in women and to provide reversible contraceptive cover for up to five years. I am involved in health education of women and preventative medicine. Our centre 28 coffs 62 focuscoast Special focus. Edition

areas rely on secure government funding. Again, the uncertainty around ongoing funding of women’s refuges is another pressing issue for women fleeing domestic violence in Coffs Harbour. The best way these issues can be improved is by all of our community in Coffs Harbour to lobby our politicians on issues that are important to us. Affordable access to support groups within our community is another issue women face. What are your hopes for the future? Coffs Harbour could become a community that opposes domestic violence and supports all women to achieve their goals and potential. The Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre hopes to be able to always support women on this journey. We would hope that more women access groups available for them to improve their health (e.g. exercise groups, surfing groups, gardening groups etc.) We would like to be part of more educational events in the area for women. t a minimum, periods stop - something that delights many people and dismays others - while for some there are additional symptoms such as vaginal dryness (which can make sex uncomfortable), hot flushes, leaking urine when you cough or sneeze, general aches and pains, and unexplained anxiety. Most Australian women go through menopause in their early 50s. You are officially menopausal once you are over 50, haven’t had a period for 12 months, or under 50 but with no period for two years. However, periods often become irregular and unpredictable for some years beforehand. Most symptoms can be managed simply, such as by using a vaginal lubricant and figuring out what triggers your flushes (caffeine, alcohol and spicy

foods are common culprits). If not, you don’t have to just put up with it. Together with your GP or practice nurse, a solution can almost always be found. Top tips: 1. STOP THE LEAKS – DOES YOUR PELVIC FLOOR NEED HELP? With one in three women who have had children experiencing incontinence, it is a huge health problem across the population. ell us a bit about your background, Emily? I grew up in a small coastal town on the South Coast of NSW and did work experience at the local physio practice, which ignited a passion for physiotherapy. After studying at Sydney Uni, I worked in a number of great practices along the East Coast and in Tasmania and have since completed additional training in the assessment and management of incontinence and pelvic floor conditions. I have moved to the Coffs Coast with my husband, a Woolgoolga local, and my three children and am really pleased to bring my skills and knowledge to help the women of this area. What is incontinence? Incontinence is any involuntary or accidental loss of urine from the bladder (urinary incontinence) or any involuntary loss of bowel motion or wind from the bowel. It’s a really common problem, with as many as one in three women who have ever had a baby experiencing urinary incontinence. This can be due to a number of factors, including pelvic floor weakness. That’s why good pelvic floor health is so important. How can physio help? The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that sling between the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis and the tailbone, or coccyx, at the back. These muscles help to control

the bladder and the bowel. They also act to support the pelvic organs and therefore prevent pelvic organ prolapse. Like other muscles in the body, the pelvic floor muscles can be made stronger with exercise, which is where physio can help. A thorough assessment can help to work out exactly what is causing your incontinence and then you can begin a suitable exercise and treatment programme for your needs. With many people performing pelvic floor exercises incorrectly, it is also really useful to have expert feedback on your technique. Why should people seek treatment for incontinence? The simple answer is because it can dramatically affect your quality of life. In many cases, incontinence can be treated or cured, so that you can cough, laugh, run or jump without worrying about leaking. It is also important to have a pelvic floor check before returning to sport after having a baby, to ensure that your body is ready to cope with an increase in exercise. Thanks for sharing, Emily. For women who think they may have pelvic floor weakness or incontinence, Mid North Coast Physio is offering 5 FREE Pelvic Floor Pre-Assessments to meet Emily and discuss your concerns. he also has a Personal Training background, has completed Ceritifcate 1 as a Raw Food Chef and is currently attending the Vegetarian Cooking School in Byron Bay to qualify as a vegetarian chef. She also helps run Emerald beach Plumbing with her husband, Pete. You have some exciting plans this year; tell us what they are? I have just put in a new kitchen at home to accommodate my new venture of healthy food and cooking workshops, which will start in July this year. I will be running workshops to cover all types of cooking, including raw food classes, which is something I am very excited about. I am currently working on a website and have just registered my business name, “Pandora’s Plate”. Tell us more about the type of workshops you will be doing? Using my nutrition background, I will be able to teach people the medicinal value of certain food, as well as making it easy, fun, enjoyable. It is also important for me to show people that we can fit in the time to prepare good and healthy food if we just know how. My passion in life is to change the world one bite at a time! I love the taste of fresh and healthy food and the way it makes me feel, and I want other people to enjoy it as much as I do. What are your tips for time challenged people to be able to prepare good, healthy food? We are all time challenged these days, but planning goes a long way to feeding you and

your family the right fuel to keep the body active, busy and coping. This is how I make healthy food happen every day in my house: • Plan a menu for the week on Friday • Write a grocery list • Shop on Saturday (I go to six different places to source my produce) • Sunday night is time to prepare juices, almond milks, bliss balls, snacks and get ready for the next three nights’ dinners. • Make enough dinner the night before to have as lunch the next day. What other advice can you give people regarding good nutrition and weight maintenance? • We need to stop eating lunch “Eldesko” and be mindful of how and what we are eating. This means slowing down and enjoying your food one bite at a time and get away from that desk and sit somewhere relaxing. We often don’t realise that we are swallowing our food without chewing it. Digestion starts in your mouth! • Eat less - halve what you would normally eat, and then go back for seconds if you are still hungry. • Eat when you are hungry • Don’t eat too quickly • Small mouthfuls of food at a time • Chew slowly • Don’t have a huge meal at night for dinner, as the digestive system is getting ready to slow down. Eating too late at night burdens the digestive system and will probably keep you awake until it’s done its job. Most importantly, smile while you eat and acknowledge the flavours and enjoy. focus coffs Special coastEdition focus. 33 67

GET THROUGH WINTER WITH A SMILE! WINTER FOR ME MEANS TIME TO START CREATIVE PROJECTS INDOORS, RENT THAT DVD YOU HAVE WANTED TO WATCH ALL YEAR, AND ROAST DINNERS.

y partner on the other hand, has turned grumpy and lethargic. He thinks he is saving his energy for next summer! We are all different and react to events differently but one thing is universal: exercise and movement will help you feel energised and happy through winter, regardless of preference! Now here is a challenge and a half: how do you stay motivated to get up in the morning for your exercise fix? How do you keep making it to the gym after work when it’s starting to get dark? First of all, choose a friend or family member to exercise with (Preferably one of those who get really upset if you hit the snooze button

too many times). Secondly, choose something you both will enjoy. Thirdly, keep it simple: Stick to any activity that will take you 15 to 50 minutes. The latest sports research points to the most benefits of exercise from high intensity interval training. In plain English this means short burst of all out exercises. Get your inspiration from a YMCA X-lab class (30 minutes) or choose a smartphone app that will direct your workouts. High intensity in short bursts will increase your metabolic rate (the amount of calories you burn even when not exercising), your fitness, your fat burning capacity and your muscle tone. And best of all: it gives you a kick of happiness hormones that will take you through the winter with a smile!

Invisalign uses clear removable plastic aligners which are

changed every two weeks to gradually move your teeth in the same way as traditional braces. As our population is living longer, there is a huge shift towards adults seeking out orthodontic treatment. Every smile is important, and misaligned teeth can contribute to oral and systemic health problems. As long as you have teeth in healthy bone, it’s never too late to improve your smile.

i Deanne. What’s your background in the Great Lakes area? I moved to Forster in 1985, where I worked in hospitality at a lot of places, but two iconic ones were Tudor House and Forster Beach Motel. We travelled for a few years, had some awesome adventures and ended up living in Far North QLD, where I worked in some beautiful five star retreats. We returned to Pacific Palms in 1990 to build our home and begin our family. Pacific Palms has been an amazing place to bring up my two beautiful children and create a business. You’ve studied extensively in the health and wellness fields, and have qualifications in many areas - including massage, Pilates, and personal training. What inspired you to work within the health industry? When my children were born, I was inspired to learn as much as I could about health, to give them the best start in life, so I was always reading and doing workshops on nutrition. Working in hospitality involved night work, which was not easy with the kids. I remember at one stage I had four jobs on the go as a casual, just to make ends meet. I decided one day I would create my own business and before I knew it, I was studying to be a Naturopath. My first step was to complete my Massage Diploma to get my business established. What’s the history behind your business in Pacific Palms, Shen Wellness? Shen Wellness first began 20 years ago in Smiths Lake. I approached Fancina, the owner of our local Hair Salon, to rent a room to begin massaging. You may have noticed that the beautiful old house at 39 Commerce Street, Taree, is now the home of the The Heart Centre. W

hat circumstances led to the establishment of The Heart Centre in Commerce Street, Taree ... and when did the doors first open for business? The Heart Centre opened its doors to patients on the 1st Feb, 2016. Dr Sesh moved to this location as a part of the natural evolution of his practice. As it has expanded, so has the need for a space where Dr Sesh can efficiently provide evidence-based comprehensive diagnostic and management strategies for cardiovascular conditions. The Heart Centre offers state of the art non-invasive cardiology services (echo, stress echo and consultation) for the Manning Valley and Great Lakes communities. Dr Sesh continues to provide invasive cardiology services (angiograms and stenting) at the Mayo and Newcastle Private Hospitals. Who are the staff/individuals involved with the business, and what are their various roles? Tanya Lewis: Medical Receptionist; Allison Sawyer: Practice Manager/Medical Receptionist; Lucinda Fischer: Trainee Echocardiographer; Robyn Norris: Senior Echocardiographer; Katrina Narasimhan: Business Manager; Dr Dan Connor: Specialist, Anaesthetics and Echocardiography; Dr Sesh: Cardiologist/Principal. absent from team photo above.) Tell us a bit about the building the business is housed in at 39 Commerce Street. What is known about its history? With thanks to the Tinonee Heritage Museum, we were able to discover the early history of the building. It was originally located in 2 Manchester Street, Tinonee and was known as the Freemason’s Hotel. It was operated by Mr. Arthur Else during the mid 1860 - 70s, Mr. William Dumbrell, and Mr George Else until the late 1880s. It was closed down in 1890 and subsequently occupied by Mr. Thomas Badger and family. It was reopened in the late 1890s as the Royal Hotel and operated by Mrs Elizabeth Ball. Mr William Mooney followed as the proprietor from 1911-14. It was later closed in 1919 and the last proprietor, Mr George Bird, had the building moved to its current location thereafter. Unfortunately, since its move, any historical documentation is unavailable to us. Anecdotally, it has been a private residence, The Blood Bank, The University of Newcastle, and the Pre-natal Clinic for the Manning Base Hospital. Extensive renovations occurred to ensure the building was ready for business. Describe the changes made (externally and

internally) and how these have helped the business … We started on the inside, removing the original floor boards to ensure the structural integrity of the building. Unfortunately, we were only able to retain a small portion of the boards, and they are now located in the entrance/waiting room of the building. A couple of partial walls were removed and beams put in their place, in addition to two extra walls. The bathroom was demolished and is now the patient toilet with disability access. Internally, we have attempted to restore the building to the Edwardian era. As the building is Heritage Listed, we did not make any external changes, only to replace rotten windows and boards. A fresh coat of paint and landscaping has provided a breath of life, and the building is now disability access friendly. Given the layout and the interior decoration, we are able to provide our patients and staff with a calm, friendly and aesthetically pleasing environment. What were some of the interesting details/ items uncovered once renovation began? As the building has had a long and varied history, initially, the internal space had been heavily modified to accommodate the Blood Bank.

However, after stripping back multiple floor coverings, we uncovered original floor boards and walls. Unfortunately, there were too many patches in the floor to be able to keep it all. There were what appeared to be messages for the Blood Bank written on the original walls! We kept some of the boards from the internal walls that now make up the reception desk. They were sandblasted to remove the old paint (which was probably lead paint). Who would you like to acknowledge/thank for their assistance with the renovations - and also for their knowledge of the building's history? We would like to acknowledge and thank the following: Alan Smith - Eastern Solar Designs; Paul & Anthony Hogan - C.J. Hogan & Co Pty Ltd; Trent Jennison - Valley Industries; Willow Joinery; Pam Muxlow - Tinonee Heritage Museum. What are the plans for the business (and the beautiful building in which the business is housed) moving forward? Dr Sesh plans to continue providing the current services offered at The Heart Centre and expand as per the demands of the service. How can readers find out more about The Heart Centre? You can follow us on Facebook; alternatively, drop in to see us at 39 Commerce Street! Thanks Katrina.

MOTHER’s DAY

ow did you first become involved with the Mother’s Day Classic event what’s your personal experience with cancer? My mum passed away from breast cancer, and ever since then I had always wanted to be involved somehow to raise funds for breast cancer research, but I just didn’t know where to begin. Mother’s Day morning in 2013, I was watching Sunrise and they were promoting the event, which I thought was a fantastic idea. I looked up their website, saw that there was a run in Forster that day, but I had missed it. It got me thinking that as I hadn’t heard or seen any advertising for it, maybe I could help to make it bigger and better. So I got in touch with the organiser, Marg Lewis, told her my story and that I wanted in - and have been organising it with her ever since. How many years have you been involved with the event for now, and what have been some of the highlights of your involvement? This will be my third year of being involved - and many more to come. There have been many highlights over the years but to me, just seeing the participants, young and old, come all dressed up in pink ready to support the cause has been the biggest highlight for me; just knowing there are so many people 40 focus Special Edition manning-great lakes focus. 42

NATURAL MEDICINE WEEK, 20 – 27 MAY 2016, AIMS TO PROMOTE, EDUCATE AND RAISE AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANT ROLE NATURAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONERS PLAY IN THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF AUSTRALIANS.

P

roudly supported by the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society, Natural Medicine Week celebrates the three primary models of natural medicine; these being: • Ingestive therapies such as naturopathy, nutrition and more. • Bodywork & Massage • Traditional Chinese Medicine - also known as “TCM”and associated techniques like Acupuncture. What is natural medicine? Natural medicine (also known as complementary, alternative, holistic or traditional medicine) refers to healthcare practices and therapies whereby trained natural medicine practitioners treat their patients for illnesses via natural methods and materials. The “holistic” nature of natural medicine practice extends to identifying the most appropriate modality, or type of therapy, both for the individual and their presenting health concerns. These therapies can be classified by three primary models: ingestive therapies such as naturopathy, nutrition and more. Ingestive therapies include any form of treatment that is consumed by the human body. Bodywork and Massage: bodywork and massage encompasses therapeutic techniques involving the body and predominantly aims to assess and improve areas of the human physics such as posture, skeletal and connective tissue (fascia) and muscle pain. All massage techniques are considered forms of bodywork. Traditional Chinese Medicine: also known as “TCM” - and associated techniques like Acupuncture. Traditional Chinese Medicine has the longest history of any medical system in the world, originating in ancient China and evolving over thousands of years to be a complete medical system. TCM is used to identify, treat, and prevent illness, with the underlying viewing the human body and the mind as an interconnected energetic system. Each of these primary models have different types of natural medicine treatments. Ingestive: Aromatherapy, Ayuveda, Herbal

Liz Maertin Women’s Health Physiotherapist Why Women’s Health Physiotherapy? Many women suffer incontinence in silence, when there are many options available to improve symptoms or achieve full recovery. My passion is to help these women improve their quality of life. Rusden Street Physio has supported my passion by investing in a Real Time Ultrasound Machine and specialist training, allowing me to assess pelvic floor dysfunction and better manage treatment. What are the most common symptoms? The symptoms most often seen are: Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) (urine leakage with physical activity/movement e.g. coughing, running); Overactive Bladder (OAB) (unexpected

urine leakage); and Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) where pelvic organs (e.g. bladder) “drop down” through supportive layers of muscle. Some women experience bothersome wind or faecal incontinence. And it’s not just women. Men, particularly those over 60, can also experience SUI and OAB. How can Physiotherapy help? Supervised, intense pelvic floor training can improve or completely resolve 84% of SUI. Bladder retraining and pelvic floor exercises can help manage OAB. Pelvic floor exercises may help prevent POP progression, or complement surgery. Education, dietary changes, and pelvic floor exercises can help manage these problems.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE FASTEST GROWING AGE GROUP IS PEOPLE OVER 65? IT IS AN INTERESTING TIME IN LIFE; SOME PEOPLE HAVE RETIRED, SOME ARE STILL WORKING, BUT NEARLY ALL ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO A FUTURE WHICH IS FULL OF INTERESTING ADVENTURES AND REMAINING INDEPENDENT AS THEY GET OLDER.

P

lanning for the future is very important, and setting goals about what is necessary to keep independent is vital. Gillian Traise is a Physiotherapist who has extensive experience is assisting people keep fit, maintain strength and function as well as regaining or maintaining independence as the get older. She is passionate about healthy ageing and is the owner of the Institute of Healthy Ageing, an organisation which is committed to providing people with knowledge and skills, so they can make the right plans to remain active and as well as possible. How did you come to be interested in helping people to grow older actively? I have been a Physiotherapist for 30 years and have worked in aged care and community wellness programmes for 20 years. Over the years I have come to understand the issues associated with ageing, and after listening to people’s stories and watching how they deal with the problems they have with movement and everyday tasks, I have come to understand what is specifically required from an exercise and rehabilitation perspective as well as from a motivational perspective. Sometimes life is tricky, and sometimes it is tiring. However, the more people sit and worry about what is going on, the harder life actually becomes. At this point, a range of motivation strategies are necessary to change what is going on and help a person get moving again. Why is it important for people to remain active as they get older? The saying “Move it or lose it” is so very true. The human body needs stimulation to keep strong. As we get older, life changes and we start being less actively generally. The more we sit, the weaker we get, and sometimes this leads to a downhill spiral. When we are weaker it gets harder to do things, so then we do less, and then the weaker we get. Often this all happens without us really realising.

ou are celebrating 25 years as owner of Irresistible Style. Tell us about this journey so far ... We are a locally owned and operated business. Being a local girl, I attended both primary and secondary school here in Armidale. What are some of the changes you have noticed over this time? I find it hard to believe we have actually been in business for 25 years and are still trading from the same spot in Armidale Plaza. When we first opened, there were two department stores and another lingerie shop; sadly, over the years they have closed. I am pleased to think we have weathered the tough times and are still here and still enjoying what we do. You are more than a “bra and undies” shop; tell us more?

Tony Bennett Acupuncture How did you become involved in treating women’s health issues? During my 20 years as an acupuncturist, women have become the mainstay of my practice. This is probably due to the fact that men are scared of the idea of needles. I assist women with a variety of menstrual disorders, from simple period pain to more complicated conditions such as uterine fibroids and problems with conception. Is acupuncture effective in helping women to become pregnant? Many women seek acupuncture as a primary method of assisting with fertility and becoming pregnant, and many more come for help to optimise their success with expensive IVF programmes. I consider acupuncture to be of great benefit in assisting with many of the physiological problems as well as the psychological barriers which often impede conception. What about treating women who are pregnant? I regularly treat pregnant women for morning sickness (in many cases, all day sickness) and back pain in particular. Towards the end of their term many women also come to me for assistance when they are about to be induced or when the foetus is malpositioned.

or me, it is when I’m running out the door for work (not enough time), or when I have woken up after falling asleep on the lounge at night (couldn’t be bothered). Then, there is flossing… Seriously, we just got through talking about not having enough time to pretend to brush our teeth, and now you want us to floss! Cleaning your teeth properly is hard. Flossing is harder. And I’m a dentist. If anyone should be a gold medallist in the Flossing Olympics, it’s me. But, dental hygiene is of paramount importance. It isn’t taught in schools, and Mr. Oral B Dentist from those silly ads doesn’t tell us either. In a few short words, here’s

A.A.C.M.A. Fellow A.T.M.S. Member

why it’s important, and here’s how you do it. There are two main dental diseases: tooth decay and gum disease. Most importantly, tooth decay is prevented by not eating sugar. I am always trying to eat less sugar, but if you're like me you may have a pile of Easter Eggs hanging around, daring you to eat them. So it is hard sometimes. In the meantime, the next most important thing is to smear fluoride on your teeth. Gum disease is prevented by massaging the gums. So we combine: massage the gums with a fluoride toothpaste (normal toothpaste). Angle the tooth brush at 45 degrees to the gum and gently massage where the

pink meets the white for two minutes twice a day. The tooth paste will foam up and cover the teeth so don’t waste time just scrubbing the teeth. And here’s the other big secret: after you’ve cleaned your teeth, spit out the tooth paste and DON’T rinse with water. It takes some getting used to, but as one of our Assistants likes to tell patients, it is like putting on your fancy moisturiser and getting straight in the shower. You want to keep the fluoride on your teeth for at least 30 minutes before you something to eat or drink. Until the next fun fact (and perhaps some flossing tips)! Spit; don’t rinse!
