Alex Cosway // C OMMANDAR CENTRE

2017 has been a crazy year! I’m saying this having seen a 200% growth in our business with the continued rollout of NBN areas on the Mid-North Coast. Most recently, NBN has gone live in Wauchope, Laurieton, Kempsey CBD, with Port Macquarie next! To support our continued growth, we recently expanded our Commander MNC team by two…stay tuned for future Focus features to learn more about them! What makes your business special or unique for its customers? Would I classify us as being unique? Absolutely! We are unique in that we are the only specialist NBN communications company on the Mid-North Coast.

Our NBN phone systems connect directly to the NBN carrier servers, providing industry leading pricing on phone lines at $25, which includes local and STD calls.

What drives you to be successful in business? I am passionate about saving businesses $$ using the latest NBN technology. Over the past three years of migration businesses to the NBN, the savings our clients have seen are enormous. This has enabled some businesses to remain viable and even expand into new markets.

Alan Pognowski //

X Y Z SUPPORT

We’ve seen some dramatic changes this year at XYZ support, and I’ve loved the challenge. After 18 months of working in partnership with Zoe Van Mill (my daughter and founder of XYZ) I have now taken over the business management - which was a natural move, due to my background in global business. Zoe is involved both creatively and technically; however, with me holding the reins she can spend more time raising my little rascal of a grandson. XYZ’s self-editing system allows customers with limited computer skills or time to edit their websites with ease and confidence. This has been a hit among many new customers the past year, fuelling us to continue its development.

Our strong focus on up-to date technology means our current designs slide perfectly into the latest mobile responsive code, making websites accessible and meaningful to all users, no matter what device they use.

I am excited about times ahead, as we continue to grow and meet so many fabulous businesses to support. Our name is Support, and that goes both ways - I am also grateful for the support of all existing customers and want to thank you for your business to date.

Greg Bates & Scott Good //

MC GR ATH E STATE AGENTS

Greg, how has 2017 been for you, thus far? We’ve just enjoyed the strongest first half that I’ve experienced over almost 20 years in the industry. My recent teaming with Scott Good and Natasha Swan has enabled “team Greg” to deliver what we feel is now the finest real estate service available anywhere, and the results have been amazing. What drives you to be successful in business? Consistently exceeding clients’ expectations requires significant motivation, and personal focus becomes infinitely more understandable when you are inspired by your own big, fat juicy “WHY”; “why am I giving this my all - what are my goals?”I consider my “WHY” every single day, and it always drives me to be even better than I was yesterday. Tell us how your business is being innovative in 2017? “Team Greg” is progressively taking its service module to a whole new level, reinventing itself under the respected McGrath banner.

We recognise that today’s people want information without delay, so we’re developing the means to deliver our communications more swiftly, more professionally and full of meaningful content.

Wayne, Quentin and Joshua A SIAN AID

How has 2017 been for you, thus far? Wayne: A whirlwind of change. I moved from Manila, in the Philippines, to Port Macquarie. I swapped smog for fresh, cool breeze, long congested traffic jams for five minute delays, and noise for relative calm. Quentin: A rollercoaster of highs and lows, but I know it’s good - because I keep lining up for more! Joshua: Challenging. With a growing family, balancing work, travel and quality family time has required intentional action. Struggles and intentionality help us grow, though. What drives you to be successful in business? Wayne: Drive comes from within. I am driven by the feeling of taking ownership, accomplishing goals, and being part of a team. Quentin: The knowledge that my work changes the lives of thousands of vulnerable children. If I am effective, they can go to

David Evans Kristian Murphy Andrew Meldrum HEM PROPERT Y

2017 has been a very exciting year for all of us at HEM Property. We only opened our doors in April, but have been incredibly pleased at the response to the new approach we are taking and the fact that we have already established ourselves in the local real estate arena. I think it’s fair to say that we all have a competitive element which drives us to be successful in business. However, we measure success by the satisfaction of our clients and the quality of our service, rather than how we are positioned compared to our “competitors”. We take pride in what we do. Every sale and every client matters, and it is knowing that we’ve achieved the best possible outcome for each of our clients that is paramount. The repeat and referral business we enjoy is a testament to this dedication and for us is the biggest success. When we launched HEM, we wanted to break away from the stereotypical image of real estate agents and put the focus back on the clients and their homes. Some agents get caught up with being in the limelight or being number one, but with us it is the client that is number one. We keep it simple and treat everyone the way we like to be treated. At HEM, the whole team, from the front desk to the directors, is dedicated to providing a new level of service and a premium result, which means our clients walk away happy ever more. HEM is all about change, and we embrace innovation. We have the most sophisticated database and systems that enable us to go about our job efficiently and successfully. However, our business is people. You can have all the gimmicks in the world and jump on every technological advancement, but there is no substitute for having an experienced, hardworking team who know how to deal with people and can negotiate great prices. This is the most important thing when you are looking at selling or leasing a property and why our exceptional, hand picked team truly sets us apart.

We also allow community groups to use our facilities free of charge, to help fundraise or to have a committee meeting or gatherings.

Alistair Flower How has 2017 been for you, thus far? Our business, the Settlers Inn Hotel, has experienced some real positive momentum in 2017. The repositioning of our brand as a community centric family hotel, some renovations and refreshing of our facilities and the development of staff in key areas of our business is really starting to take shape. What drives you to be successful in business? Can I say facing the bank manager? But seriously, it’s pride. If I’m to put my name to something, I’m sure as hell going to make sure I give it a red hot go and not leave anything in the tank to see it succeed. What makes your business special or unique? for its customers? A lot of businesses like to say they are community focused, as it’s a great buzz phrase and they have read it in some business book. But at Settlers, we are genuinely passionate about the community, and I think the customers can see that with everything we do in our business. Does your business participate in local community activities/initiatives? Settlers prides itself on

sponsoring more sports teams and clubs than any other licensed business in the area, which is a great feat considering 18 months ago when we bought the business, it had zero sponsorships. We also allow community groups to use our facilities free of charge, to help fundraise or to have a committee meeting or gatherings. On a personal front, I’m the President of the Hastings Liquor Accord, which represents over 100 licensed premises in the Hastings. I’m also on the Board of the Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Association and this year will be the licensee of Tastings on the Hastings Tell us how your business is being innovative in 2017? Recently we have completed a new state of the art kids’ playground, to help maximise our trading times, and we’re looking at ways to provide healthy snack options for mothers’ groups and kids. We also see an opportunity for early morning coffee trade; we’re looking to launch an express drive through coffee business on our busy Hastings River Drive frontage.

What drives you to be successful in business? I have always been interested in the conveyancing and real estate industry. Born and raised in Port Macquarie I began working in a conveyancing firm at 14 years old delivering their mail after school. I have now worked in the industry for over 13 years, I am passionate about helping clients through the complicated and sometimes daunting process of buying or selling a property. I am a Licensed Conveyancer and a partner in Page Conveyancing Port Macquarie’s longest running firm of licensed conveyancers. My job is always interesting and a challenge, no two days are the same. The landscape is constantly changing and always presents opportunities to further our education, knowledge and skill. It is an honor to assist clients with their transactions and I

am always seeking ways to better our service and seek to innovate the way we work. How has 2017 been for you, thus far? This year has been quite busy with the property market moving at a lightning pace and also with our business name change. We decided to shorten our name to Page Conveyancing as people quite often had trouble spelling Meryllyn’s name. Tell us how your business is being innovative in 2017? We are proudly the first conveyancing firm in Australia to offer our clients the ability to order a contract for the sale of property online. PEXA is also picking up traction in our industry, which allows settlements to be conducted online. Our firm has conducted numerous transactions on this platform and we all agree it is certainly the way of the future.

Tim Baker BAKER IT

Growing up in Port Macquarie and attending East Port High, I found I always had a passion for computers and would spend a lot of my time in the computer lab. After finishing high school, I went on to do a Diploma of IT at PMQ TAFE. It was the first year they were offering this course, which was really exciting. I’ve always been a computer geek, but my first job was in insurance. I ended up being “that guy” in the office that would fix all the IT issues - so the IT company who was looking after the insurance company offered me a job and as they say, “The rest was history”. At Baker IT, we are a friendly, approachable IT company that is focused on the client. Our mission is to be part of our clients’ business and help them grow and become more productive. For us, it is not about fixing the problems after they happen; we work to be proactive, and make sure those problems don’t arise in the first place. In today’s instant society, our clients want to be able to work from anywhere, access everything, and be up and running as quickly as possible. And with the steady roll out of the NBN and other high speed providers, this is becoming more achievable every day. We know that local businesses are looking for ways to stand out from their competitors, and technology is an excellent way to embrace this; from faster quotes and turnarounds, to mobile workforce, virtual offices and cloud solutions technology is the way get a jump on your competition. Baker IT has some big plans to announce soon, and we have some unique partnering opportunities that will allow us to offer even more ground-breaking tech products to businesses of the Mid North Coast.

In the middle of last year, I developed a new approach and have started providing anxiety workshops for organisations and their employees in a group setting.

Matthew Duff

COUNSELLING HYPNOTHERAPIST

How do you measure your business goals? I measure my business goals, and so my success, through my clients’ therapy success. I am very focused on assessing clients’ issues, understanding their behaviour and then providing a therapy outline to promote this change. The client not only gets a better understanding of how they feel and why they are behaving in a certain way, but they are also aware of each step of their progression and working towards their goals. A very large portion of my client base are referred by previous satisfied clients who have used my services - that is a true measure of being an effective therapist. What drives you to be successful in business? I am passionate in helping my clients promote change and help them achieve their desired therapy goals. I have always felt privileged that my clients allow me into their personal lives to assist them to change and improve themselves. I do this normally through the use of counselling and hypnotherapy. Counselling is very effective in un-

80 GreaterEdition Port Macquarie 10 Special focus focus

derstanding the problem, how they feel and their behaviour; yet, that does not mean the behaviour changes automatically. That is why I then switch therapy and use hypnotherapy, as it is very effective in speeding up the process of emotional and behavioural change simply, easily and effectively. How do you plan to be innovative in 2017? For the last 15 years I have been in practice as a therapist, working with individuals. In the middle of last year, I developed a new approach and have started providing an anxiety workshop for organisations and their employees in a group setting. The workshop provides an insight to what anxiety is, how it works, why we continue to have it - even when it feels negative. I then use hypnotherapy on the group to reduce the anxiety and put measures in place to keep it lower. This allows each person to think clearer, feel calmer and increase their coping ability. Lowering anxiety allows us to be happier in our personal lives and more productive in our professional lives.

Martin Newell, Gwaine Robinson, Tony Rathbone // R A I N E & H O R N E P O R T M A C Q U A R I E

How long have you been working in real estate, and why did you choose this industry? Martin - I started my real estate career in 2003, when the local agent offered me a sales position within his business. Gwaine - I have been working in the industry for almost four years, after a 25 year history of personal property investment. I always wanted to help others with their real estate goals and dreams. Tony - I have been in real estate locally for 15 years. I chose the industry because every day is different, you need to think creatively, be a great problem solver and most importantly, I loving helping people and creating lifelong friendships. Why do you enjoy working at Raine & Horne? Martin - Raine & Horne is 100% Australian family owned; as there are no share holders, they can invest strongly into the brand and its systems. Gwaine - I love the friendly team atmosphere,

and of course, we are blessed to be based at the beautiful marina. I also enjoy working for a company with such a long proud tradition of honesty and quality service. Tony - I love the fact that we have so much experience; we can easily share knowledge and support each other, because we are a relatively small team. Where do you see yourself in five years? Martin - Right here running a very effective business unit - and loving it. Gwaine - Watching my three young adult sons grow into the fine men I know they will be. Personally, enjoying life in beautiful Port Macquarie, and fulfilling my personal dream of becoming a Federal Senator in Canberra. You have to have dreams! Tony - I see myself managing another Raine & Horne local office due to our growth.

Mark Fitzpatrick A STUTE FINANCIAL

With a career kicking off in 2003 within one of the major banks, Mark Fitzpatrick gained much valued experience in all aspects of banking, receiving many accolades - including three time CEO Award Winner and five time Ultimate Success Champion. This gave him the platform and experience that he has retained and values still to this day. It’s a dynamic market place, and getting it right from the start can save clients not just thousands over time, but also ensure flexibility to grow.” Relishing the challenges that he faces day to day is what drives Mark to truly enjoy and love what he does. THE BURGER REBELLION

How has 2017 been for you, thus far? Busy! It’s our second year in business, and we have barely come up for air. It’s hard to believe we are already in July. We have been working hard on refining our systems, training our staff and perfecting our product. I have spent time with our suppliers working on consistency and sustainability of our locally sourced products.

What makes your business special or unique for its customers? I think people really enjoy being able to eat great quality, fresh food in a very relaxed atmosphere. We get a lot of comments on our friendly staff and the consistency of our product. Our approach to a casual dining experience is a little different to most, as we don’t serve your average burgers.

What drives you to be successful in business? I have always been passionate about (eating) good food. I love being hands on and a part of every process, so small business is a great fit for me.

Does your business participate in local community activities/initiatives? We are proud sponsors of local sporting clubs like the Port Pirates Rugby team, the Camden Haven Junior Boardriders, the Port Boardriders, and the Port Mac Bodyboard Club, to name a few. We provide continual support for a group called the Bloody Champs, who are CSU paramedic students that have a blood donation program. We also sponsor the Lake Cathie skate park initiative. The Burger Rebellion are also involved in the Hastings Youth Week activities and various other local community clubs, groups and causes.

We are striving to be a successful small business that offers young people a fun, energetic and professional place to work. Port Macquarie is thriving, with a solid foodie culture, that as business owners we can build on and grow - to attract locals and visitors all year round. I am always blown away by how well other local small business owners are operating. The standards are being lifted, and it is a great thing to be a part of.

Roger Firth LHD L AW Y ERS

With claims experience spanning 25 years, Roger Firth is passionate about personal rights and staunchly opposed to an organisational power inbalance. He originally studied law at the suggestion of a barrister while working on a matter in Sydney; the plan was to go to the bar and do his training, which barristers call a reading, in his chambers. By the time he had finished, he had spent enough time at a bar, and decided to become a solicitor instead. Roger predominantly acts for injured clients who have suffered a wrong by negligence: clients injured through their employers’ negligence; as a result of a motor vehicle accident; or because of a mechanical or product failure. He also provides compensation advice for matters like victims of institutional harassment or sexual assault. The LHD practice, where you can find Roger, can provide clients the benefit of a legal firm that has worked in all courts, including the High Court, in cases that have made precedent decisions lower

courts follow. In doing so, Roger has not only worked on complex points of law but importantly for his clients he has demonstrated experience litigating complex cases. LHD have shown their ability to represent the interests of their clients against well backed defendant organisations in all jurisdictions - including class action cases. To adequately prepare for public liability matters requires resources. Proving liability is just the start - establishing the damages is critical in providing value for clients. If you are a person who has suffered injury, damage or a case that involves advocating for personal rights in liability, Roger Firth is the only man you need to see.

Michael Percival // PRINCIPAL

What drives you to be successful in business? Our only motivation in business is to be excellent and provide the highest level of service and professionalism that we can. Across our Property Management office we deliberately employ more team members per property than the industry average to ensure our very valued clients get the attention they deserve. Tell us how your business is being innovative in 2017? We have recently completely transformed the way we do property management to ensure that our owners and tenants get one on one personal service. In an era when personal service is disappearing fast we are pushing back against this trend by continuing to strive to exceed our clients’ expectations. The other big focus we have is changing the way we market our properties. We have used professional photos and floorplans for many years and we are now going to the next level with three dimensional floorplans and video marketing. Our business has a dedicated and skilled marketing and social media team who are producing world class media. Does your business participate in local community activities/ initiatives? Percival Property always been very active in supporting the community that supports us. We gave back nearly $50,000 in the last 12 months to local sporting and community groups and medical research organisations. What do you do to keep yourself motivated? I am very much self-motivated and I genuinely want to continue to improve throughout my life. My wife inspires me daily with her drive and her constant desire to improve our business through hard work and innovation. I get an enormous amount of energy from running and cycling and these activities continue to motivate me every day. I keep myself sharp by maintaining my private pilot’s licence but by far my main source of inspiration are my amazing children and grandchildren who remind me always about what is really important.

Greg Ward // LICENSED AGENT

What drives you to be successful in business? What is the definition of ‘success’? Our business is more often about understanding the needs of our clients and helping to reach an outcome in the most timely and efficient way possible. Being successful in business to me means being able to assist, advise and guide my sellers and buyers to achieve the best result possible. Buying and selling can often be one of the most stressful, difficult and emotional times in their lives. Helping them on that journey drives me to achieve the best possible outcome for each and every person I take that journey with. How do you measure your business goals? Real estate business goals generally can be measured easily mathematically, however real estate is so much more about the people than it will ever be about the numbers. It’s a business based on relationships, friendships and trust. A measure of a real estate agent’s business success could be as simple as how many Christmas cards or referrals you receive from satisfied clients. Tell us how your business is being innovative in 2017? I’m personally very fortunate to be a part of an extremely strong and progressive sales team at Percival Property. This is a highly innovative office employing cutting edge tools and technologies which, of course, we share with our sellers and buyers. Some of these technologies include 3D virtual tours and 3D floor plans, cinematic lifestyle videos, professional photography and some amazing drone footage. As a result of our marketing package our client’s homes are exposed to a larger audience and they enjoy a faster and more financially beneficial result. Does your business participate in local community activities/ initiatives? I’m proud to be associated with a team who contributed around $50,000 in sponsorships and fundraising last year alone. When Percival Property commits to a cause we are all in! What do you do to keep yourself motivated? No motivation necessary – I work in an industry I love, in an amazing part of the world!

Rick Owen // PROPERT Y MANAGER

What drives you to be successful in business? Your sense of success in Property Management comes with trying to do the job well and believing you can make a difference for your clients. If your clients are happy and everything’s running smoothly, you know you’re doing the right thing. This in itself is challenging, because you are trying to keep people happy in an ongoing relationship with them. Everyone knows how difficult even the best of relationships can be. How do you measure your business goals? The type of feedback you get from clients. You are constantly setting micro goals to improve the relationship with your clients, and their satisfaction is confirmation you’ve achieved your goal. It’s difficult to accurately define your measure of success in Property Management, however, building relationships, guiding clients and working with investors to increase value in their portfolio, and seeing the end result is extremely satisfying. Tell us how your business is being innovative in 2017? We are at the forefront in process, knowledge and technology, and the office takes pride in this. We do whatever we can to provide a first class service. Property Management is evolving constantly, but we have been able to anticipate the changes and make the adjustments ahead of the pack. Michael Percival encourages his staff to keep thinking of ways to improve, and do things differently where most property managers are happy sticking with the business-as-usual approach. To stay the same is to go backwards, especially if you’re staying the same as everyone else. What do you do to keep yourself motivated? I don’t have to do anything. The people I work with are the best (even though they’re all mad) and they motivate and inspire me all the time. If you work in a great environment with the best people, you don’t need to motivate yourself.

ill, you are Head Chef at Seed Catering and Events, a Port Macquarie catering and events team. Can you tell us a little bit about your business? At Seed we aim to deliver the highest quality food and service to any event, large or small, on the Mid North Coast. We provide fun, flavour, passion and professionalism from concept to completion. Since our launch at the Tastings on Hastings in 2016, we have enjoyed a wide range of events ... Beach-side weddings, canapés in the mountains, meals for musicians, sandwiches for corporates, degustation dinners for doctors. We have done a Japanese pop-up bar and CBD markets; the fun doesn’t stop and the possibilities are endless. Coming up, we have an Oktoberfest event - German food, steins, beer maidens and a brass band. We have dinner with chef Poderick from Heston’s in Melbourne, as well as the wedding season and Christmas parties. You have several philosophies that guide your business practice. One of these is to minimise your business’ carbon footprint. Can you tell us how you bring that to life in your day-to-day operations? Danielle is better at this than me, and she constantly reminds us to look at what we do and how we can be more environmentally conscious. So we do the following in our business: • Recycle in the kitchen. A lot of kitchens don’t, which is a bit sad. • We predominantly buy locally grown vegetables, thanks to Kenny Little, which reduces travel emissions and keeps money locally. • Danielle is an avid op-shopper. We purchase resourcefully and quite often repurpose, rather than buy landfill. An example of this is we bought some old doors that were

Pete Jeans is a strategic project leader amongst many other things! With a wide expanse of world travel and a career that’s spanned many industries, Pete is a recent transplant to Port Macquarie, and he sees a wealth of opportunity locally. In simple terms, whether as a mentor, advisor, strategist or team leader, Pete aims to help businesses succeed …

i Pete. Describe your childhood … What are some of the towns/ countries you’ve lived in? I was born in a small town. We moved regularly throughout Dad’s defence career - Hong Kong, Melbourne, South of London. Travelling as a child helps you make friends quickly. Finally, Sydney offered the family an opportunity to put down roots. After high school and uni, my business career took off. I luckily learnt effective commercial and team leadership from some great leaders - male and female. It meant long days … cabs, planes and meeting rooms. But, I always rang the kids every day at their bedtimes, wherever I was in the world. How do you feel travelling extensively has helped shape you into the person you are today? Growing up in different cultures delivers perspective as an adult. I’m more open to all groups and nationalities, belief structures and cultures. I always make a point of listening and considering others’ advice - particularly in new offshore and Australian regions. It’s also the approach I take as a mentor, when guiding others in their career roles and pathways. I reckon clear direction, focus and best-practice are mandatory. Dive in deep; but know how deep it is first. Making a mistake is fine - but not the same mistake twice. You initially studied PR and communications at CSU Mitchell. In what way did these studies provide a stepping stone for your future achievements? Studying at Australia’s prestige communications school imposed a bunch of responsibilities to strive to build a reputation like 88 GreaterEdition Port Macquarie 18 Special focus focus

other successful grads. It taught me the basics. Keep on asking “why?”, and eventually you’ll get to the truth. It was a great lesson for my commercial life. I went on to post-grad studies in commerce and applied that training with already-embedded values of persistence, and inquisitiveness - often very useful in achieving your goals year by year.

supportive and enthusiastic. My gut said, “Go there”. My head told me the same. The numbers stacked up.

This is a significant advantage in my role as a mentor, advisor, business growth leader, change ambassador and now post-grad educator for the AIM MBA Business School. I work hard to achieve trust and embed that reliance for clients. Inside the business working with the teams on the business makes much better sense than arm’s-length consultancy.

Look outward and forward and be the best. Regional business and community leaders whom I’ve met so far, I think share a similar vision. They’re an impressive group. I’m looking forward to meeting many more.

It appears your career path has been a case of choosing multiple directions - teaching, public speaking, business strategist Good advisory, planning and and leader. Their strategic imperatives aren’t dissimilar. Better market intelligence, better solutions to customer and stakeholder needs, and better implementation are the platforms that make a real difference. Critically, our connected digital world is throwing up an increasing need to be disruptive in new approaches to growth. My philosophy is that to survive, you have to grow. To grow, you have to compete. And to compete effectively, you have to be prepared to be better and different ahead of the pack. How important have mentors been in your life?

Incredibly influential. I’ve had a few mentors - all extremely bright and wise. They’ve opened my eyes to options and pathways perhaps not immediately obvious. They’ve connected me into circles that have proved valuable for my future. That’s what I try to deliver for people I mentor myself. You’ve moved to Port Macquarie recently from Sydney. What led to the move - and what opportunities do you see locally? Sydney’s future costs and business logistics for the next few years are just unacceptable. For example, daily traffic delays, freeway tolls and parking are unjustifiably high. Port Macquarie won my interest to base here over other regional areas on costs, capital city access and NBN rollout. People I talked to in evaluating Port Macquarie as a business-base were positive,

What are your current business interests/ services offered? At SMO (http://www.smosydney.com.au) there’s a wide range of things I do - mentoring, strategy, change management leadership, professional marketing advisory. But I guess if you strip the jargon away, I fix up businesses. I’m a strategic project leader. Sometimes organisations have challenges around growth, or lack of certainty around future costs, or have question marks on best-practice processes to get ready for industry or organisational change. Whatever organisations want, I’ll deliver it for their leaders, as long as it’s legal and ethical. What’s next for Pete Jeans ... A book is in the pipeline? Yep. Pearls of Wardom, for emerging leaders … Tips and techniques for their career development. Drafted and ready for a publisher - go to http:// www.petejeans.com to learn more about it, if you like. See the tab re “Books”. I’d be interested in a couple of local board appointments. And, my Rotary Sunrise Club membership in Port Macquarie is important. I hope to contribute a little going forward to the wider community. And, of course, I get to read stories to my little granddaughters as they grow and make my world a better place. It’s all good! Thanks Pete.

Tell us about your craft. How do you define what you do? I am a retail butcher specialising in quality fresh meat. In our business we concentrate heavily on fresh product, as opposed to carton meat. We purchase whole fresh carcasses - beef, lamb, pork and chicken and break them down into saleable products. We also manufacture on the premises all of our sausages - “the good old fashioned way”! What influenced you to begin as a butcher? At the age of 16, my father had just passed away, leaving me to support myself. A family that I had connections with persuaded me to find a job in the meat industry. Hence, my retail butchery career began! Where did you learn your craft? I began my apprenticeship at a retail butcher shop in Earlwood in Sydney. I began in an era of sawdust on the floor, wooden cool rooms, timber butchers’ blocks and wooden benches (all replaced with stainless steel and nylon bench tops), greaseproof paper and newspaper for wrapping, barrel scales, and not to mention the good old pencil and paper for adding up. What has changed over the years from when you first began? The obvious changes over the years would be the technology, food safety programmes and hygiene standards all being tightly monitored now. However, the basic craft of preparing and retailing meat, apart from the addition of many value added cuts and the deletion of many older cuts has not changed much at all. The changes in our business over the last three to four years, with our customers becoming increasingly more passionate about their barbecuing and cooking in all areas, has been astonishing! Can you tell us a little about your business? We began Grumpys Tender Meat & Fresh Chicken at Lake Innes Shopping Village in 2007, with a focus on quality meat and old fashioned customer service and attention to detail. We see our customers as the most important part of our business. Over the years we have grown a successful retail butchery, employing four to five permanent butchers and three to four casuals.

Matthew Conway. Matt, tell us about your craft. You could not say my craft is only defined in the kitchen; I take a more holistic view on what I do as the creator of the Burger Rebellion. As with any busy small business, the more you do yourself, the more you are in control of its direction. From its conception, every detail has been carefully constructed, is continually evolving and being refined. Without the support backing or systems of larger organisations, I have developed all the product, procedures, flow of operation, training and development of staff, as well as encompassing marketing promotions, HR and accounting. What influenced you to begin as a cabinet maker? My experience comes from a very early age, when I developed a love of timber, building kites and boats as a young kid. From there, I began to experiment and learn about the different timbers. One of my first loves of timber was of a beautiful piece of Cedar, which a friend’s father made into a boat. It was that beautiful deep, rich red Cedar that I just fell in love with, the rich and wondrous fragrances of Cypress Pine and Coachwood ... What variety! I was hooked ... Over the years I decided that I wanted to work with timber, so I became a boat builder. In 1982 I started making furniture with my brother, Kim. Where did you learn your craft? I completed formal training as a boat builder at Ultimo Technical College, while working for Ninham boats in Manly Vale, where we also did some furniture as a sideline. What has changed over the years from when you first began? When we first began, there were four or five furniture makers in Port and their styles were far more traditional, with a lot of turned work and delicate moulded scroll work. In the ensuing years we gradually moved over to our own designs and styles. These days we are known for our bespoke designs, that are made to suit each customer’s requirements. Can you tell us a little about your business? We pride ourselves on producing a wide variety of furniture types and styles, all while keeping the quality as high as possible. We have a very comprehensive website, that displays all our standard designs and most of the furniture we have done over the last decade or so. What do you love most about being in business in Port Macquarie? The climate is brilliant; the people around the Port Macquarie area are just so easy going as well. It’s a very nice area, and I couldn’t think of a better place to live, personally.

// T H E B U R G E R R E B E L L I O N

are so many facets of the business as a whole; I feel that moving forward, a bit of delegation will be on the cards. What influenced you to begin as a small business owner, and at what age? My parents tell me that when I was four or five, I used to set up all my toys at makeshift tables and chairs like a restaurant and pretend to cook with raw carrots in water. I remember at school confidently and distinctly always knowing that I wanted to be a chef, starting my apprenticeship after school at Sails Resort in the nineties - which led to a career cooking all over the world. After 10 years of fast pace living,

I burned out and took a hiatus from the industry and became an electrician. But the fun, exciting, fast paced hospo industry has lured me back … Did I forget to mention that I love (eating) burgers. Can you tell us a little about your business? The Burger Rebellion is a independently owned gourmet burger restaurant on Clarence St, Port Macquarie. Our philosophy is simple ... Great burgers, great local beer and wine, in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. We also offer the best chips and milkshakes, as well as catering for gluten free, vegetarian and takeaway.

SECRE TARY MANAGER CLUB NORTH HAVEN

What drives you to be successful in business? What drives me to succeed within this industry is creating a comfortable and friendly atmosphere with staff and the public. I strive to ensure that our staff are happy and our members and visitors feel welcome and enjoy their time at Club North Haven. There is no greater enjoyment than going to work alongside great staff and being involved in a positive environment. What makes your business special or unique for its customers? What makes our club unique for our customers is our staff. Their loyalty to one another and the teamwork they show in ensuring our guests are welcome and looked after when visiting our club is something special. Many members and visitors comment on their friendly nature and customer service, which the board and management are extremely impressed with. Tell us how your business is being/plans to be innovative in 2017? Currently Club North

Haven is in the process of an exciting renovation, where more than half of our club is being rebuilt and refurbished. This renovation will give the club a fresh outlook, with new facilities including a new café, great new function room overlooking the water, new TAB and gaming areas and new main bar lounge areas, including new state of the art restrooms. Does your business participate in local community activities/initiatives? Club North Haven support many sporting groups: lawn bowls, fishing club, Camden Haven AFL Junior Bombers. We are also very proud to give back to the community, by continuing our long standing sponsorship of all fuel required by the local Camden Haven Sea Rescue Service. Our staff at present are busy seeking sponsorship for the Mark Hughes Foundation; eight of our staff will be running the North Brother Mountain Run to help raise money for this charity; currently over $1,400 has been pledged in sponsorship.

WRIGHTS CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS

How do you measure your business goals? Our business always budgets for the year ahead. We also have monthly targets that we strive to achieve. Our progress on these is reviewed each week in our partners meeting, along with some other targets that are critical to the business working effectively. Tell us how your business is being innovative in 2017? The past few years have seen massive technical changes, not only to our business, but in our clients’ businesses as well. Over the past couple of months, we have updated some internal software, which will provide some ongoing efficiencies and also allow us to communicate with our clients more effectively. Working with our clients to help them leverage innovative accounting software such as Xero helps them gain some crucial

efficiencies. The majority of our staff are now Xero Certified Advisers. We have always considered ourselves as advisers, rather than accountants. By integrating these software changes both into our business as well as our clients’ businesses ensures we are able to spend more time providing advice for growth. Where will you be in five years? As an organisation, we are very driven by the goals we set ourselves. As a business, we have defined goals that we would like to achieve in the next few years, and at this stage we are on track to complete them. So now it’s on to re-assessing where we are and what we would like to achieve next. I have also set some personal goals, some of which align to the business goals, which I would like to see come into fruition within five years.

Mark Robinson What makes your business special or unique for its customers? The jokes I tell them while I discuss the benefits of having a commercial solar system installed, including cost savings and the environmental benefits. A lot of commercial premises are currently on very good contracts for energy costs, which would have been in place for three years or more but with the new price structure that is being incorporated, these costs will soar over the next few years by 50% in some cases. Once you have installed a solar system on your roof, it will continue to generate free electricity from the sun year after year. This means you can substantially reduce or even eliminate your electricity bills, giving you the peace of mind that you’re doing what you can to keep your bills as low as possible for your business. There aren’t many financial investments better than solar. You’ll be saving on your electricity bill from day one. This translates into a return on your initial investment of 15 - 30% per annum for many years to come, and your solar energy system will pay for itself in around

What drives you to be successful in business? It’s passion; that may sound like a cliché, but for me passion creates the motivation to be more than just a mechanical repair shop. I love what I do and with the help of my team, we strive to deliver the best service, quality workmanship and customer satisfaction, whether it is just a pink slip or diagnosis of a vehicle problem. Where do you see your business in five years? In five years we will see some industry changes, but we will adapt and continually upgrade equipment and training, to keep up with changes.

I love what I do and with the help of my team, we strive to deliver the best service, quality workmanship and customer satisfaction, whether it is just a pink slip or diagnosis of a vehicle problem.

PORT KITCHEN WORLD

How has 2017 been for you, thus far? I have been in business in the Hastings area for over 20 years and would say 2017 has been the busiest year by far. If it’s not the new home market, it’s the renovators. There have always been a lot of people relocating to Port Macquarie from Sydney, but this year it seems to be another family every other week. What drives you to be successful in business? The driving force behind our success would have to be customer satisfaction. The sales team really put their heart and soul into their designs and strive to give our clients the best possible results, with the lay out and materials chosen. Tell us how your business is being/plans to be innovative in 2017? Innovation is really all any business has left to move forward. The price points always have to be competitive, and the materials purchased for a job are usually bought at a competitive price. Machinery innovation is also key to our success. Using computer software with screen to machine cuts down on our labour hours and decreases any errors, giving a more precise and consistent product. What do you to to keep yourself motivated? I guess I stay motivated by still enjoying seeing the end result of a nice kitchen and a happy client or builder. Where do you see your business in five years? I see our business utilising technology and growing even more from the benefits that computer based manufacturing provides ... Maybe even cutting down on my hours along the away, to spend more time with my family.

OCUS grabbed a coffee with Marcus, to find out more about his professional background and current kitchen trends.

Four years ago, Designer Living Kitchens opened their brand new showroom in Coffs Harbour, adding to the existing locations of Port Macquarie, Laurieton, Ballina and Central Coast. Designer Living Kitchens says that although the company had been servicing the builders on the Coffs Coast for thirty five years, the new showroom also needed to cater for the renovation segment of the market. With this in mind, they enlisted the services of Marcus Phillips, an award winning interior designer with 28 years’ experience in Kitchen Design. Marcus started his career in design after attending Julian Ashton’s Art School at The Rocks in Sydney, where he completed a fine arts course. He later went on to complete advanced interior design studies. In the mid 1980s, Marcus commenced his kitchen design career with one of Australia’s best known kitchen companies in Sydney and a few years later, took up the position of Head Designer in Brisbane. Marcus then went on to hold that position nationally (Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane). As head designer, he was responsible for training designers and running the design

team in three states Marcus won his first Kitchen Design Award in 1989 and a number of awards since then, including outright winning Kitchen of the Year. Moving to the country three years ago, he has designed two complete showrooms, the last of which won Showroom of the Year 2013. Marcus says: “It’s important for me to find out how many are in the family, how they like to entertain their friends and relatives, and how the new kitchen should relate to the adjacent areas.” After working for a German kitchen company a few years ago, Marcus says that the European experience has reinvigorated his desire to create functional design along with a “wow factor” in every kitchen. The Design Process The process of buying a new kitchen may seem daunting to those brave folks thinking about it. After all, it’s a major surgery to the home. That’s why Marcus has, over the years, developed a smooth, hassle-free process, whereby you will feel that you have been listened to, received relevant design input, including advice on colours and finishes. With unique and cutting-edge design software, our combined ideas come to life, with a virtual walk-around your new kitchen. By giving you a number of pricing options for various finishes, you are able to make informed decisions based on your needs.

DIREC T WHOLE SA LE SERV IC E S

What is your connection to the Coffs Coast? I originally came to the area in 2009, having been appointed the CEO of the Bowraville Local Aboriginal Land Council.

Peter Bulanyi Peter Bulanyi is is the director of Si Clean Energy (wholesale) and Mega Watt Power (installation). FOCUS had a chat with Peter to find out more about his business and background. hat is your connection to the Coffs Coast? We moved to the Mid North Coast in 1989 to be with family. We purchased a remote 100 acre farm with no power to raise our two young sons. After a couple of years, we were running our own inverter service and repair business, which included solar power installation. What background experience do you bring to your current roles? Having been an Australian Airforce Electronics Technician and the 14 years we spent independently supplying our own power needs has provided us with the knowledge and experience needed to successfully expand our business and to pass the knowledge we have gained to our customers, so they can make the best choices for their solar power needs. What is the most satisfying aspect of your role? Knowing that not only are we helping people to reduce their energy bills, but that having installed over 2,500 quality solar power systems across the Mid North Coast also means we have played a big part in reducing our community’s green house gasses emissions by around 7,000 tons per year. How does your business give back to the community? We have supported many local community events over our 28 years in business. Our last donation was a medium size OffGrid Solar Power System complete with solar panels, inverter and batteries to the local Coffs Community Gardens. Helping when and where we can is always a pleasure for us. Best advice for someone starting out in your industry? Make sure you are up-to date with the latest standards and technology available. 54 coffs Edition coast focus. 26 Special focus

What creative things do you do to develop a likeable company culture? We have always treated all our staff like family. We have employed people whom we believe are an asset to our business and the community. We have trained more than 10 apprentice technicians and electricians and fostered the development of many people in our company, who have gone on to become industry leaders across Australia.

Previously I had no connection, but we had friends who lived at Valla Beach, and they told us it was a really good region to live. What background experience do you bring to your current roles? One significant thing I did was to study accounting as a mature age student and become a Chartered Accountant, working in both public practice and industry. I have worked in a wide variety of industries, generally in regional Australia and for small to medium sized family companies. All of these things, combined, have helped me in the current role.

In five years’ time our energy management services will have outgrown our solar power operations. We are presently contracting with both residential and commercial clients to monitor and report on their energy costs. Our reporting and consultation forms the basis for energy efficiency solutions. These services are proving highly effective in driving our clients’ electricity costs down. The more electricity prices increase, the more we are called to help out.

What creative things do you do to develop a likeable company culture? Maintain my sense of equilibrium as much as possible, no matter what is happening.

What do you enjoy most about the Coffs Coast? It’s our home. We have been lucky to travel to many countries over the past 28 years for work. Every time we come back home, we just feel so lucky to live in this wonderful place. Thanks Peter.

Since our family purchased the business four years ago, it has grown by almost 50%, and I think this current financial year will see continued growth. There are a couple of areas of the business we can concentrate on to improve and promote, one of which is the supply of roasted coffee beans and associated products.

In five years I see the business as having established branch operations in other major centres in the broader region and being a major supplier in our area of business and employing a growing number of young locals.

Where do you see your business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years? We have developed a range of our own locally manufactured products. This includes the PowerCab (see picture), which is the basis for our Grid Connected Hybrid and Off-Grid energy storage systems. The next 12 months will see us install growing numbers of PowerCab systems.

Ten years is a very long time in our industry. It is our sincere hope that the grid will have significantly transformed to one based on renewable and stored energy and that Si Clean Energy and Mega Watt Power will have played a significant local role in achieving what was once thought impossible - a pollution free electricity grid.

has been operating in Coffs Harbour for over fifty years now, and I think we are the fourth family to own the business.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your role? Finishing the week with happy customers and staff.

Not take myself too seriously and enjoy the day at work and laugh as much as possible. Where do you see your business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years? Direct Wholesale Services

In five years I see the business as having established branch operations in other major centres in the broader region and being a major supplier in our area of business and employing a growing number of young locals.

Most rewarding part of your job? Helping the customers to solve their problems, providing good service and the staff enjoying their jobs. What do you enjoy most about the Coffs Coast? There is so much to enjoy here. The weather is amenable almost all year round, there is the sea, the coastal strip and the mountains for variety, and the people are easy to get along with. Sometimes you might think it would be nice to go somewhere else ... But really, having lived here, where else could you go? That’s the really hard question.

We love the ocean views, the happy, warm atmosphere and our ever growing loyal customers. It just felt right that we (me and my business partner, Nicole) take up the offer to start a new restaurant/venue within the Surf Club. I love living, working and raising a family on the Coffs Coast and believe in supporting our community by giving back. I’m very proud that we have gone from employing ten local people to 35 staff in the eight and half years we have been operating Surf Club Restaurant and Bar. We support numerous local sporting groups, Surf Lifesaving, and more recently, Clark Webb’s Aboriginal language education program (BMNAC). We give to many charities, including Cancer Council, Special Children’s Xmas Party and the Red Cross, also offering vouchers to help with many local fundraisers. Having a large family, we are involved in a variety of sporting groups, including soccer, surfing, rugby league and our family’s obsession, Crossfit! We also support BWN, Coffs Tourism, Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce. All our suppliers are local, and we prefer to buy produce that is grown in our region. We have so much to be proud of. Battery technology is the hot topic at the moment, and integrating them into new and existing systems to increase the customers’ self-consumption of solar power and reduce their reliance on the grid is what most people want to talk about. What makes your business special or unique for its customers? I think what makes my business unique is the fact that I can accommodate a high percentage of my customers’ needs. So, the one company can take care of everything, whether slashing a 500 acre property or mowing a small courtyard.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated? My motivation is positive feedback and return business. I get inspired when I turn a property from being neglected into something where people say, “WOW! What a difference!” For example, if you are looking at listing your property for sale, for a relatively small outlay on your most important asset, to have it presented at its best, you can make a significant increase to your bottom line.

What makes your business special or unique for its customers? We specialise in branding, marketing, advertising and web design, and we’ve worked with some of the world’s largest brands and some of Australia’s most iconic; but what we value most is bringing our unique level of thinking and creativity to smaller businesses, where we feel we can really make a difference.

It gives small businesses the opportunity to get out of their home offices and into a creative, energetic and motivating environment.

I also pride myself on always getting back to people within a short turnaround and treat communication as an absolute priority within my business. I never like turning business away, so I try to accommodate anyone seeking my services and always return calls as promptly as possible. How has 2017 been for you, thus far? 2017 has been another very busy year, maximising our resources and testing the endurance of us all in keeping up with the workload.

working with our clients (the people) to accomplish this. We all have factors that affect how we live and the resources available to us to help look after our families, and our pets.

How has 2017 been for you, thus far? Massive! We’re now helping more than double the number of people on a week by week basis than we were at this time last year.

What drives you to be successful in business? Healthy, happy, patients! And owners! For me, the success of the business is the consequence of putting everything I have into doing what I love. So, I guess the drive is the demand or need for what we do. My desire is to use the skills and resources I have, to the best of my ability, to look after the animals of our area, and to work alongside their human families to do this. I am fortunate to share this desire with my partner, Sam, and all the talented and motivated people working with us at Sweet Pea.

At Sweet Pea Animal Hospital, we all take great pride in working with people and the resources they have available, to look after their pets in the best way possible.

What drives you to be successful in business? If the last answer didn’t give it away, our sole mission as an organisation and for me personally is to make a difference in the lives of as many people as possible.

What makes your business special or unique for its customers? Everyone at Sweet Pea - the vets, nurses, trainees and volunteers - are dedicated to and focused on the positive welfare of our patients (the animals). This, of course, includes

This involves not only the commitment our team have to the primary care of the animals, but their commitment to educating pet owners about the health of their pets - making them aware of the options that are available and how to make the most of the resources they have. Tell us how your business is being innovative in 2017? The Great Lakes community has been incredibly supportive of what Sweet Pea Animal Hospital does and stands for, so at present our plans revolve around keeping up with the needs of a continually growing practice. At times, it feels like this requires something more than innovation!

What makes your business special or unique for its customers? In many of our locations, we’re the first ones to be delivering the services that we offer. On top of that, to my knowledge we’re the only health service providers who guarantee what they do with a 100% money back guarantee - that’s how determined we are that what we do works and more importantly, how committed we are to ensuring our clients receive the care they’re after. Tell us how your business is being innovative in 2017? We’re using technology from

other industries to help facilitate our operations. Most of our team spend a fair amount of time working remotely in some capacity, so we can stay tight knit without always being face to face. On top of that, we spend a ridiculous amount of time in continual professional development, so we can constantly be reinventing our services. Does your business participate in local community activities/initiatives? Absolutely! Because we deliver health services, we’re always tied up in grassroots community initiatives to make people’s lives better. We’ve got Veterans Health week coming up in October, which we’re keenly planning for. Where do you see your business in five years? Kinetic Medicine is set for some massive things in the next five years, as we look to have stand alone venues offering services five days a week across the major centres of our MidCoast region.

coming into the business, bringing new ideas and ways to do things. Some new systems and analytics, which will make things more efficient - I don’t think I can really give too much else away though.

gain community support, or the track - which was then only registered as a training track - would be closed. The racecourse is run by volunteers; only the curator is paid (he does a marvellous job). Approximately 35 volunteers run the race meetings, every day maintenance at the track, as well the administration. To see the effort all of these terrific people put in is enough to keep my motivation up. Where do you see your business in five years? Eighteen months ago, Racing NSW invested one million dollars into the Tuncurry-Forster track infrastructure, bringing the track up to a standard where now Sky One racing can be held. In the next five years, the committee has set out a program to complete the last necessary infrastructure for patrons’ comfort - a track maintenance program, which will further improve the racecourse to the highest level of racing. This whole project has been very pleasing, considering all the knockers who said, “Racing will never eventuate at the Tuncurry-Forster track”.

LJ HOOKER FORSTER/TUNCURRY

How has 2017 been so far? The year has been “full on”, with the taking on my new business venture at L J Hooker Forster Tuncurry. A great team of people to work with and the very robust market has kept us all very, very busy. There is huge interest in our beautiful part of the world in terms of visitors. Tell us how your business plans to innovate in 2017. The business world has changed dramatically in the last five years, given the value of the internet and its impact. It is not limited to one sector of business - it impacts all sectors - tourism, real estate, agriculture, development, and the building industry - particularly any service orientated industries. Being up to date with the available platforms and internet “tools” is imperative to business owners. What does it mean to be a business owner to you? Being an owner of a business is very

much about working and nurturing people staff, clients or customers. The role is difficult and not easy, as the activity of business is always challenging. Many business owners are time poor, stretched for resources, challenged by legislative requirements and the never ending challenge of setting out the strategy for the future. Many people may not realise that over 7 million Australians are employed in small businesses (Aus Gov Treasury Dept 2011). What is a key driver of success in small business? If there was one element to small business that “makes or breaks” a business and particularly a small business, it would be customer service. You have to be the “best” you can be in whatever endeavour or sector you choose. Although not easy, it is deeply satisfying to be an owner of a business growing and nurturing people within your organisation.

My wife, Bec, and I have been living and working in the Manning-Great Lakes for over 10 years now. We travelled here together after completing degrees in health and education at Newcastle University. We now have two “true” locals who were born here, Oliver (4) and Bridie (2). What’s your study/education background in teaching/children’s services? My interest in working with children started in high school, when I coached tennis squads after school and in the holidays. After high school I went on to study a Bachelor of Early Childhood and Teaching. While I was studying, I worked as an educator at an OOSH service in Adamstown, as well as continuing to coach tennis. After graduating in 2007, I worked as a casual teacher in schools at Taree and Forster. I gained a full-time teaching position at Forster Public School in 2010, teaching kindergarten. When/why did you decide to concentrate your efforts on providing OOSH (Outside of School Hours) childcare services locally? After my first year of teaching in Taree, I had noticed a lack of quality care options for primary school aged children - particularly during school holidays. In the January school holidays of 2008, I established Manning Valley Vacation Care. The service was an instant success, and after a couple of holidays was providing care for over 100 children per day. After the success in Taree, we opened full-time 46 Manning-Great Lakes focus 42 Special Edition focus

OOSH services in Newcastle, Forster, Pacific Palms and Taree. What OOSH services are you currently involved with? Where and when do they operate? We currently have five services under the Active OOSH banner at Forster, Taree, Pacific Palms, Old Bar and Lake Cathie. All the services operate before school care, after school care and vacation care from 6am or 6:30am, ‘til 6:30pm.

In April we received an award at the Network (the peak representative body for OOSH) OSHCARS awards. These awards happen every two years, and we were one of only four recipients on the night. Our award is for innovation in transition to school. We worked closely with Forster Public School last year to design and implement a program to assist children in the transition from preschool

to kindergarten. The program was developed in partnership with the Principal, Rick Clissold, and Early Stage One Leader, Tianne Gosling. The program was designed to help children and parents feel comfortable in transitioning to school over the December/January school holidays. The program was a huge success and achieved some great outcomes for the kindergarten children. Children who attended the program were much more confident and happy on the first day of school. What inspires/motivates you to keep working within the childcare industry? A passion and love for the industry. When you get to work with children, their energy and enthusiasm rub off on you. There is no better feeling then having a positive impact on a child’s life. It’s the “watch me do this” moments when a child is proud of learning something new. It’s the card that a child makes for you when they are still learning to write. It’s the relationships we build with children and families over the years. In a world where large multinational companies treat childcare as a purely money making entity, it’s nice that we are able to offer something that has the children’s and families’ best interests at its core. It’s also easy to stay motivated with a very talented and innovative team, with special mention to Troy Murphy, Mardi Gosling, Brittanie Gutherson and Sigourney O’neil, who are part of our leadership team. Where can we find out more information about the services/facilities you offer? You can find more information on our website www.activeoosh.com.au or find our services on Facebook. Thanks Tom.

To support our continued growth, we have recently expanded our Commander MNC team by two … stay tuned for future FOCUS features, to learn more about them! For some businesses, it has enabled them to remain viable and even expand into new markets. Secondly, seeing my team develop new skills and take on challenges inspires me to succeed. Their enthusiasm and dedication to not only our business but to their personal life drives me to ensure the business is successful. REGIONAL FINANCE SOLUTIONS

A greater number of home buyers are realising the benefits of working with an accredited finance broker more than ever before. There are countless reasons why it pays to use a mortgage broker when shopping for your home loan. When you’re a direct customer in a complex market, the process can be more supply driven than demand driven. That is, you are forced to deal with what is being offered, rather than allowing the broker to put you at the centre of the process with a range of institutions. If you use your trading bank for your home loan, you are limiting your scope. And when you go online and do searches for home loans, you have to start comparing.

And how do you do that with so many products? Will your knowledge ever be as complete as the professional broker who works full-time in this market?

We aim to gain a full understanding of our customers’ needs and then provide options allowing a more informed choice when deciding on such an important financial decision. As owner of a local business, we are committed to assisting more clients in the long term, and with over 20 years of industry experience, gaining that specialised assistance with your loan can be of maximum benefit to you with the choice of financial institutions available.

Anthony has grown up in his family’s business. TWM Armidale sell and service tractors and other farm machinery. TWM Armidale have sold a lot of different brands of seeders; one of these was Agrow Drill. While transporting these from Wellington, Anthony used to think to himself, “Why can’t we build these?” The prototype was built in Anthony’s garage at home, applying his many years of experience to improve the functionality of today’s seeders. They sold the first Williams Seeder to clients in Walcha in 2001. In 2003, Stephen Grills, a qualified boiler maker, came on board. So through the expertise of Stephen and Anthony’s knowledge of the needs of the clients, Williams Seeders was born. Together with Stephen, the machines have evolved to incorporate many different options. The machines have been designed with ease of use, low maintenance and strength in mind, to suit the New England conditions. Anthony has always said, “If they are built to suit New England farmers, they will work anywhere”. They are now selling machines Australia wide. TWM gets great satisfaction seeing the finished product being delivered to the customer, knowing it is going to work well for them for many years to come.

OUTCROSS

hat does OUTCROSS do? OUTCROSS is precision livestock management consulting, software and contracting for the Australian beef cattle industry. We are a service provider to the beef industry, and we do about 80% of our work at sale yards. With a mix of consulting, technology and labour contracting, we help the client meet regulatory requirements and improve efficiency in the sale yards. Is this done by software? Yes, we provide consulting services, followed by technology solutions and finally labour to implement the recommendations of the consulting, or to help clients manage the technology e.g. running the software and getting the most out of the systems. How did you start? I was working in a related area in terms of managing commercial research projects, doing data management for beef industry participants and traceability work for product from farm through to retail. In 2008, I had an opportunity to branch out and start my own business. What is your typical day? I spend about half my time in the office doing consulting and business development. The other time is spent out visiting sites, which could be as far away as Blackall in North Queensland to as far south as Hamilton in Victoria. We cover a broad geographical area. If I’m out on site, you’ll find me catching up with members of our 25 staff, or liaising with clients, making sure we are meeting expectations. What is one of the biggest challenges you face in your business? I would have to say working in the sale yards. What we do is rather complex; for example, today we have 5,500 head of cattle and have to provide the software and NLIS (scanning of the ear tags) of all the cattle, setting up all the accurate sale catalogs and physically draft cattle too. Everything is highly time dependent. What is one rewarding part of you job? As an owner of a very unique business, it’s very satisfying to see our team overcome the hurdles and achieve the many types of outcomes and to work as a team. It’s not an easy job, so it’s most rewarding to see the business excel.

TONY WILLIAMS MACHINERY

i Tony, what do you do? I’m the owner and Director of Tony Williams Machinery and Williams Seeders. How long have you been in the industry? In 1980, 37 years ago, I started with my father, Tony.

What’s a typical day for you? There are no two days the same, that’s for sure. One day I could be 50 km east of Tenterfield, and the next day halfway to Wauchope. Other days, you’ll find me in the office building seeders, fixing or selling tractors and talking with customers. Tell us a little about the Williams Seeder. It was developed in 2000, and in 2003 we built five. We are about to hit the 300th seeder. The Williams Seeder is specifically designed for the New England and surround ground conditions. The Williams Seeder seeds a range of crops, from high performance pasture right through to common oats. So was it because of the harder soils that you created the Williams Seeder? No, not harder soils, but much more rocky soils. The dense rocky land was damaging machines that weren’t designed for such rocky and undulating land types. This is what got me thinking about crafting our own machines.

IMPAC T AG

hat do you do? I am a director/founder of Impact AG. We manage agricultural assets for domestic and off shore investors. Our team of analysts, farm managers and operational professionals based in Armidale ensure that the operational management is executed according to the business plan and investment strategy. How long have you been in business? Since founded, about eight years so far. Most rewarding part of your job? I guess one of the most rewarding parts is meeting really interesting people from around the world. We get to learn from them; we get to learn from different economies in different countries. It’s a global business? Our clients are domestic and international, there farm assets are here in Australia. What’s the most challenging part of your business? Managing the variables and things that are out of my control. However, we overcome these with technology, my team, being proactive and prepared. What’s your day look like?

Do you class yourself as an inventor?

Well, I didn’t invent the wheel, but I have adapted the previous seeder designs to handle the rough conditions the New England has to throw at it. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Meeting so many people from around the New England.

Wow, that could be in the office here in Armidale, or on site at a client’s property, or in a capital city somewhere talking to potential clients. There really isn’t a typical day, and it’s probably what I like most about it. It has so many different aspects about it; it’s always varied and never a dull moment.

Favourite food? Well as you can imagine, I am a meat eater! I would have to say my wife, Sue’s, roast lamb - with a 150 Lashes Pale Ale to accompany it.

What is the most challenging part? Putting up with the ones that are a pain in the bum! (Laughs.) Favourite food? My wife or mother’s baked dinner.

How you feel that your business revolutionises the industry? I think we offer a new level of investor expectation. Ag is now seen as an investment sector and asset class. We are offering a service that utilises technology where it can and professional services that are matched with our asset managers.

Thanks Tom.

Thanks Anthony.

Favourite drink? Indian Pale Ale.

Where is BCM (Bicycle Central on Marsh) and how long have you owned your business? BCM is positioned on Marsh Street at the Wicklow Complex ... Ideally opening onto the Wicklow sporting fields and the bicycle pathway, the perfect spot to test a new bike. Holly Harris and I took over the business last October from Holly’s parents, David and Lisa. What makes BCM a special business? At BCM we are passionate about offering friendly, knowledgeable customer service and quality products. We stock a vast range of road and mountain bikes. Qualified bike mechanics offer in store servicing. BCM provides quality group and individual coaching, giving all skill levels (including the beginner), the confidence and knowledge to conquer our local mountain bike trails. What do you love most about what you do? Owning a retail bicycle business is interesting, rewarding and lots of fun. We are one big family at BCM, and I look forward to our social rides every Saturday morning at 7am and Wednesday afternoon at 5:30pm. Both rides leave from the shop and venture out to the UNE trail. Everyone is welcome. We particularly enjoy giving back to the community through our involvement with the New England Mountain Bikers, Armidale Get Active and the Two Wheel Academy.

What is it that you do at OUTCROSS? OUTCROSS is a business which has been at the forefront of integrating technology into the beef industry. In the late nineties, once leaving UNE, Tom worked with the pastoral giant Stanbroke Pastoral Company for two years, which gave him a taste of northern beef production. In 2008, Tom established the company OUTCROSS, which provides practical livestock software and efficient contracting solutions, Australia-wide. He has experience working with over a hundred leading pastoral properties in Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory - providing data collection, contracting, technology and key management services. OUTCROSS has also developed livestock software for saleyards and stud sales, focusing on flexible client needs and efficient processing. STOCKYARD software is currently in use in 18 saleyards across Australia and is backed by a supportive team of technology and livestock professionals. Tom is from the New England, born and bred in Glen Innes and now lives in Armidale, where he bases his business and family life from. What plans does OUTCROSS have for the future? The next big challenge for OUTCROSS is the introduction of the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) for sheep in Victoria. Tom is spending a lot of time south of the border, helping out Victorian Saleyards with Sheep NLIS compliance. As usual, there is “plenty on!”

Peter Cooke // R I C H A R D S O N & W R E N C H

How long have you been in business? Richardson & Wrench has been operating continuously since 1858 and in Armidale since 2009. It is Australia’s oldest real estate brand and today remains a privately-owned, family focused company, with almost 100 franchise offices in NSW and QLD. Given its 159 year history in property service without any litigation whatsoever, we are proud to claim “The best reputation in real estate”. What type of properties do you sell? Everything, really. It is true that during the past eight years Janet and I have been involved in the sale of many of Armidale’s most iconic, period homes. However, our emphasis has always been on people and relationships. These days most of our vendors are over 55 and they have some unique property requirements, either transitioning to, or in, their retirement. Being 61 myself, I get that.

How does your business give back to the community? We see our role in the Armidale community as being far more than simply operating a small, family business. We reach out to local organisations and charities as a normal part of what we do. Sponsorships, donations and providing ongoing financial support to others are all very important to us.

I’m married with five children. I started courting my wife, Nik, when she was 17, although it took me a couple of years to persuade her. We’ve been married for 10 years and a couple for 20. I spent a fair bit of time of my early career working away from Armidale and came back to Armidale as a full-time base when I started JNC. What inspired you to start JNC? The birth of my first child, Charlie, was the catalyst for my wife, Nicole, and I to start JNC in June 2007. I’m a second-generation earthmover and started out in the family civil business, Bricon, in the late ‘90s, but left because I wanted to spend more time with my family. I understand there is a story behind the name? Originally JNC stood for Jeremy, Nik and Charlie - but with five children now in the mix, Jeremy, Nik and Children is probably the more appropriate explanation. You run a very large, widespread suite of businesses. How do you balance work with your family life? By choosing to be headquartered in Armidale, we can live in an excellent place to raise a

We also support other local initiatives wherever we work; for example, we support BackTrack in Armidale. How does a focus on social goals marry with having a very successful corporate business? We are not a social enterprise, we are very commercial in many respects, but we are conscious of our social goals in our day to day business. We are a better business and a better corporate business with a diversified workforce. Different ideas and different backgrounds really do make for a more innovative workplace. What would you advise a business just starting out? It’s not an easy road in the first 12 to 18 months. However, with hard work and perseverance, the rewards will come. What are the biggest challenges that lie ahead? We have had to streamline and implement some robust systems to support our rapid growth. That has been particularly challenging and rewarding. Finding the right people on the ground to look after the JNC baby is something I continue to take particular care in, as the business continues to grow quickly. Thanks Jeremy.

ELDERS INSURANCE ARMIDALE

How long have you been in insurance? I’ve been working in the insurance industry for over twenty years, with the last 17 of those spent working in Armidale. I started with Commercial Union (now CGU) in Newcastle, before being transferred to Armidale in 2000 with that company. In November of 2000, I was asked to take over management of the Elders Insurance Franchise; I then purchased the business in 2004. Today, we now also own the Tamworth and Gunnedah Elders Insurance franchises. What do you love about working in the insurance industry? It’s a little cliché; however, it’s all about helping people. The best thing about having a business based in rural cities/towns is that our customers still appreciate “old fashioned” service. The ability to discuss someone’s individual requirements face to face with them goes a long way to enabling us as insurance professionals to provide the most suitable product and cover for their needs. Isn’t it cheaper to buy insurance online? Insurance is like any other product or service, in that you get what you pay

ASH DELL CONSTRUCTIONS

How long have you owned your business, and how are you enjoying your new location? New England Travel has been in operation since 1978. I came as an employee in 1993, became a part owner with Sue Mann in 2001 and my wife, Shona, and I took over the ownership in 2014, with Sue selling her share. In October last year we took over our new office.

How long have you been in the building industry? I have been in the building industry for 14 years. I have worked on everything from a small cottage through to large multi million dollar commercial projects, including the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre in Tamworth and the Armidale court house.

What do you love most about what you do? We get to meet the most amazing people in this business, and it is incredibly rewarding to not only create holidays, but to be there 24/7 when someone needs help.

What do you specialise in? I specialise in new homes, extensions and renovations. I also enjoy doing decks and pergolas.

What makes New England Travel Centre a leader in the travel industry for the New England? The business is built entirely on trust; we pride ourselves on making sure that we give people the right products and the best advice and unlike online providers, we offer 24/7 support by a real person.

What do you love about what you do? I love working outdoors, creating something that is tangible, so you can look back after you are finished and see what you have achieved. It is satisfying to know it will be there for years to come, with many people and families living in and enjoying something you have created.

Tell us about your team at New England Travel? We have the best staff anywhere! They know their stuff and always go that extra mile to make sure the customer is looked after. They are fantastic!

Plans for the future? I would like to move into more energy efficient, solar passive design, homes and renovations. I think it is definitely the way of the future. People need to start thinking more about solar passive homes and how they design their homes.

The business is built entirely on trust; we pride ourselves on making sure that we give people the right products and the best advice and unlike online providers, we offer 24/7 support by a real person.
