Developing EPQ Best Practices JAWS
Rebecca Carville, Head of EPQ, Alice Smith School, Malaysia For two days in February 2019, Alice Smith hosted EPQ supervisors and coordinators from Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei and Singapore to share best practice. It was wonderful to meet and share ideas, especially as this is a qualification that receives very little overseas support and training. Sessions were held on the taught element, presentation format, artefacts, citation methods and the value of specialist staff. All of these were great for magpieing new ideas and especially useful for those attendees who were new to the course. A coaching workshop was held on the Saturday since the Extended Project is the perfect forum for this supervisory approach where it is against exam board regulations to direct students overtly in their decisions and content. Coaching techniques and questions are an excellent way of challenging and supporting students to make their own decisions, reflect on their progress and overcome obstacles - evidence of which forms a vital part of the assessment process. Feedback was extremely positive; one attendee said afterwards, “The session on coaching was marvellous - I have taken away so many practical strategies that I will be able to use for EPQ, as well as more widely across the curriculum.�

It was also lovely to hear the diversity of their projects; one of the joys of teaching the Extended Project Qualification is observing the creativity, intellectual curiosity and genuine passion of these students when asked to delve into their own interests in this academically rigorous way.
It was universally agreed that this qualification is academically demanding and tests many of the soft skills that are so highly sought after by universities and employers. The Y12 students unanimously found that, while they did not find the course easy, it had given them valuable insight into life at university and helped them develop study skills that would aid their transition. Overall, excellent connections were made for the future and it was a thoroughly enjoyable JAWS!

Mother Tongue Program in International Schools 3th – 4th May 2019 8.30 – 15:30 Hosted by Tanglin Trust School Singapore
During the Job Alike Workshop (JAWs) there will be an opportunity to network with teachers from other FOBISIA schools to share experiences and effective practice on running the Mother Tongue program in International Schools. We expect educators who attend this JAWs to leave with an understanding of ways for running the Mother Tongue program in KS3-4 and SSST in KS5, along with some ideas for language placement. The JAWs will offer detailed insight into:
Running the Mother Tongue program as an extra or core Diagnostics for language placement Differentiation in the Mother Tongue classroom IB Pathway and SSST MT programme continuity across the school Raise the profile of Mother Tongue

MATHS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL JAWS 2019 Jerudong International School, Brunei Friday 3rd-4th May 2019
This Job Alike Workshop will be an opportunity for Maths teachers across the region to get together to share great practice about teaching and learning in Maths. All participants will be engaged in creating the agenda to ensure that the two day workshop meets the needs of all attendees. A few suggested session ideas could be: 1.Current evidence based practice and what this looks like in the classroom 2.Developing high quality examples and questions that challenge all learners 3.How rich tasks can work alongside cognitive load theory 4.The new IB curriculum: a. New topics and how to teach them b. Structuring the course c. What does excellence look like? d. Paper 3 5.The new A level curriculum: a. The emphasis on applications and modelling b. The use of technology in class and in exams 6.Maths games and how to use them in class The sessions above are merely suggestions and we hope that the timetable will develop depending on the interests and experiences of those attending. CREATING AN AUTHENTIC SERVICE LEARNING CULTURE FOBISIA JAWs
3 to 4 May 2019 This JAWS is open to anyone interested in establishing an authentic culture of service learning in their school. There will be ample opportunity for participants to collaborate and share during the JAWS. Workshops will depend on what is being offered by attendees but there will also be a ‘show and tell’ session where all participating schools will be able to showcase their work. In addition, we plan to include a visit to Sekolah Bisa!; a life-enhancing, micro-school conceived and managed by IB CAS students from BSJ.
Potential topics for workshops are: • • • • • •

Embedding service learning in the MYP Curriculum. A vertical articulation of service learning. Introducing service learning in the primary school. Managing the balance - local needs and global priorities. Driving service learning through the House System. Embedding student led action research into service learning.

D’Arcy also works with The Jump Foundation as a Global Citizenship Director. For those of you who don’t know the Jump Foundation is a non-profit social enterprise that works to inspire, empower and engage individuals in leadership development, community building and global citizenship education. “Teaspoons of Change are small but significant ideas, attitudes and actions that have a positive impact on people and the planet” d’Arcy’s workshop will be a focused, active and experiential day of learning. Physical Computing (Arduino). Diagnostic questioning and formative assessment. How do we teach our students to be great problem solvers? Which programming language is right for our students? How can we get more girls to take Computer Science?
