Before getting into the details, we would like to thank you for a successful 2025: we won an award at the Deutscher Verlagspreis in Frankfurt, and Stiftung Buchkunst included four of our titles in its honor roll of Die Schönsten Deutschen Bücher 2025 . Ernst Wilhelm Nay (b. Berlin, 1902; d. Cologne, 1968) was one of the most interesting painters of European modernism. Spanning the decades from the 1930s to his death in 1968, his output encompasses paintings as well as an abundance of works on paper. The new monograph surveys all periods in Nay’s oeuvre, from the “Fishermen paintings” to the striking late pictures, which leave no doubt about the artist’s outstanding gift for color. Der die Ausstellung YES TO ALL begleitende Katalog gewährt einen tiefen Einblick in eine mehr als 900 Arbeiten auf Papier – von Postkarten und Zeichnungen bis hin zu Fotografien und Plakaten –umfassende Schenkung, die 2022 ans Kupferstichkabinett gelangte und bis 2025 weitere Ergänzungen erfuhr. Stifter sind Paul Maenz und Gerd de Vries, die bis 1990 in Köln eine Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst führten und die Entwicklung der Avantgarde-Kunst von der Conceptual Art der späten 1960er Jahre bis hin zur neoexpressiven Malerei der 1980er Jahre begleiteten. Die jüngsten Werke der Schenkung stammen aus dem Jahr 2024. In mehreren Essays und einem Gespräch mit den Stiftern wird die Vielstimmigkeit der westlichen Kunst im späten 20. und frühen 21. Jahrhundert neu erfahrbar.

The catalog accompanying the exhibition YES TO ALL offers profound insight into a collection of over nine hundred works on paper—from postcards and drawings to photographs and posters—that was gifted to the Kupferstichkabinett in 2022, with subsequent additions over the years until 2025. The donors are Paul Maenz and Gerd de Vries, who ran a gallery for contemporary art in Cologne until 1990 and chaperoned the evolution of avant-garde art from the conceptualism of the late 1960s to the neo-expressive painting of the 1980s. The most recent works in the collection date from 2024. Several essays and a conversation with the donors invite the reader to experience the stylistic and thematic polyphony of Western art in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in new ways.

Die biomorphen und monumentalen Skulpturen des britischen Bildhauers Tony Cragg (geb. 1949, lebt in Wuppertal) bestechen mit Virtuosität und Dynamik. Zuweilen wirken sie wie noch im Werden begriffen oder in scheinbarer Bewegung. Oft im Freien, in sakralem oder musealem Kontext zu sehen, fügen sie sich wie organische Wesen in ihre Umgebung ein. Schichtung und Stapelung von Materialien, Neuordnung und Assemblage standen seit den 1960er Jahren im Vordergrund von Craggs Formensuche. Inzwischen bedient er sich sowohl traditioneller als auch neuer Technologien, wobei seine Skulpturen stets in klarem Kontrast zu normativer, repetitiver industrieller Herstellung zu verstehen sind. Dieses Buch dokumentiert Craggs Ausstellung aus dem Jahr 2025 in der Anhaltischen Gemäldegalerie Dessau.

The biomorphic and monumental sculptures of British sculptor Tony Cragg (born 1949, lives in Wuppertal) impress with their virtuosity and their dynamic appearance. They might even evoke movement, as if they are still becoming. Often exhibited outdoors, and in church or museum contexts, they blend into their surroundings like organic entities. Since the 1960s, Cragg’s search for sculptural form manifested through methods like layering and stacking existing materials, rearrangement, and assemblage. He now employs both traditional and new technologies and materials, yet his sculptures have to be seen in clear contrast to normative, repetitive industrial production. This book documents Cragg’s 2025 exhibition in the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie Dessau.

Dieser Band ist das Ergebnis der jahrzehntelangen Auseinandersetzung des Künstlers Werner Schmidt mit dem literarischen Monument des 20. Jahrhunderts schlechthin: James Joyce’ Ulysses Was als persönliche Lesereise begann, mündet in eine farbgewaltige, interdisziplinäre Hommage –ein Werk zwischen Literaturstudie, Farbtheorie, bildender Kunst und sprachlicher Reflexion. This two-volume publication commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Baden-Württemberg Artists’ Association, which presented its first exhibition in 1955 at the Staatliche Kunsthalle BadenBaden. At that time, the state-wide artists’ association included Otto Dix, Ida Kerkovius, and Willi Baumeister, among others. Today, the Baden-Württemberg Artists’ Association has 450 members. Archival material provides insight into its multifaceted history, and insightful essays illuminate the significance of artists’ associations and the discourses they initiated in post-war Germany, after the country’s division and eventual reunification. The second volume documents the current exhibition SELBER ORT, ANDERE ZEIT (Same Place, Different Time), featuring 21 artists who stand for the broad spectrum of creative approaches and generations represented in the association.

Von 2019 bis 2025 fanden im nova space, der Universitätsgalerie der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, 21 Projekte statt, die in diesem Band in Bild und Text dokumentiert sind. Als Experimentierfeld und Begegnungsraum verband nova internationale Künstler:innen, Studierende, Lehrende und Öffentlichkeit unter der enthusiastischen Regie der Kuratorin Katharina Wendler. From 2019 to 2025, nova space, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s university gallery put up 21 projects, which this volume documents in image and text. As both an experimentation field and meeting place, nova connected international artists, students, faculty, and the public under the enthusiastic direction of curator Katharina Wendler. Her essay provides insight into the unique history of this mobile and interdisciplinary gallery, its program as well as the continuous development of new curatorial formats. The final act of nova is an exhibition in book form, for which artists, architects, designers, typographers, and filmmakers were invited to create work that freely associates around the theme of BOOM! —inspired by the image of the supernova.

What is recognized, discovered, rejected? Where is the viewer’s location? For her portrait series Feed , she has painted 40 female artists to date, based on staged photographs from their Instagram feeds. “Is social media an instrument of emancipation, or does it even lead to new forms of objectification?” (Kohout) In Wait for It , Springer copied pop stars from the internet, but used a silver paint that oxidizes the canvases, thus aging the eternally youthful icons before our eyes—precisely what digital image control seeks to prevent. Do we think in images or in language? Can writing visualize time? Heinz Gappmayr (1925–2010) was interested in text as a spatial event and in letters as architecture. Although his works were often presented in the context of Visual Poetry, Gappmayr himself preferred the more neutral term text to lyricism. His understanding of written language as a conceptual medium and typography as an indicator of physicality was closer to Lawrence Weiner’s approach than to that of the Concrete Poets. Zwischen 2001 und 2002 war in verschiedenen deutschen Städten ein VW-Bus mit der Aufschrift „Lufthansa Deportation Class“ zu sehen. Es handelte sich um die provokante Aktion bürgersteig von Silke Wagner (geb. 1968, lebt in Frankfurt) über die Bereitstellung von Lufthansa-Flugzeugen für Deportationszwecke. Der Bus löste heftige Diskussionen aus und wurde zum Vehikel von Aktivist:innenvernetzung und Kommunikation zwischen Bürger:innen. Das partizipative Kunstprojekt war seinerzeit wegweisend in seiner Zusammenarbeit mit zivilgesellschaftlichen Initiativen. Between 2001 and 2002, a VW bus bearing the inscription “Lufthansa Deportation Class” was on display in various German cities. The bus sparked heated debates and became a vehicle for activist networking and communication among citizens. The participatory art project was groundbreaking at the time in its collaboration with civil justice initiatives. The drawings and sculptures of Larissa Fassler (born 1975 in Canada, lives in Berlin) both document and question the modern metropolis, its public squares, train stations, and functional buildings. Fassler researches her chosen locations extensively in city archives and online. She tracks trends such as economic disparity, gentrification, homelessness, or drug consumption. She supplements these statistical facts with her own subjective survey methods, such as repeatedly visiting and observing the sites. All of the information gathered finds its way into Fassler’s complex cartographic drawings and sculptures, which reflect the socioeconomic and geopolitical challenges of our time. This book accompanies Fassler’s exhibition at the Kunstverein Lingen.

The Danish sculptor Louise Hindsgavl (born 1973, lives in Copenhagen) is known for hybrid figurines made of porcelain and glazed stoneware: half animal, half human. Only their material evokes the idealized and kitschy scenes traditionally rendered in porcelain; however, Hindsgavl’s “sculptural collisions” tell of disturbing encounters between tormented beast-like people. For that she draws from brutal folktales of the past as much as from the ubiquitous “fairytales” of today’s social media that normalize violence, sexual abuse, and self-harm. Using one of the most fragile materials, she brings these trends into focus for discussion, calling her sculptures Conversation Pieces —which is also the title of this multilayered and provocative book.

In large-format paintings, the painter Malte Hagen (born 1967, lives in Berlin) combines everyday objects, figures, and spaces into ambivalent scenarios that are both strangely alluring and repulsive. With painted light effects, whitish surfaces, and contrasts of glare and muted tones he propels the depicted subjects into a mythical distance. Yet despite allusions to mythology and art history, Hagen’s paintings are clearly relevant today. Bulky waste and plastic junk are on equal footing with golden helmets and classical poses. The artist “oscillates between sweetness and kitsch” (Christoph Tannert). What might appear ironic at first glance remains suggestive and paradoxical. This richly illustrated book provides an overview of Hagen’s subtly provocative paintings of the past ten years.

Dripping Folds and Melting States is published in conjunction with Valentina Jaffé’s most extensive institutional solo exhibition to date. Blending artist’s book and catalogue, the volume gathers works from the past five years by the young artist, who lives and works in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. In interdisciplinary and inter-media works, Jaffé explores the principle of collage—as an aesthetic as well as conceptual method. Her paper installations awash in color and ceramic objects examine transitions, imbrications, and the mutability of material conditions. Accompanying essays by Carolin Heel and Fedra Benoli add depth to her engagement with space, body, and material.

The painter Elke Wree’s career (1940–2025) was defined by the debates of the post-war era. Art was considered a search for truth and intended to reveal the existentially essential. Fundamental questions were: Realism or abstraction? Genuine or fake? This book provides insight into the search for an authentic, contemporary visual language. Wree’s formative teachers in Karlsruhe and Berlin are discussed, as are her changing social environments and the rapid societal changes. Wree’s paintings were always nature-inspired abstraction with overlapping color spaces and painting gestures. Wree groups her pictures with terms such as condensations and clearings, in-between lands, or traces of light and time . This volume is simultaneously a biography, panorama, analysis, and homage.

Die Bildhauerin Bettina Buck (1974–2018) erregte Aufsehen mir ihren performativen Skulpturen, die oft im Gegenüber mit musealen Objekten präsentiert wurden. Bucks bevorzugte Materialien stammten aus dem Baumarkt: nicht zur Dauerhaftigkeit bestimmte Stoffe wie Wellpappe, Kachelfliesen, Schaumstoff, oder Plastikfolie. Mit diesen kreierte sie eine Art wandelbare und vergängliche „Protagonisten“, die keine endgültige Form besaßen, sondern eher auf den Prozess der Formfindung selbst (wie auch den Verlust von Form) hinwiesen. Buck selbst sagte, dass ihre Werke den Betrachter sowohl anziehen als auch verstören“ müssten. Im Ausstellungsraum sollten die Objekte „ein Beben und eine Vibration auslösen, sowie ein Zwiegespräch mit ihrer Umgebung.“ Finding Form präsentiert Bucks komplettes bildhauerisches Werk.

The sculptor Bettina Buck (1974–2018) called attention to herself with her performative sculptures, which she often presented vis-à-vis museal objects. Buck’s preferred materials came from the hardware store: corrugated cardboard, ceramic tiles, pressed foam, or plastic foil, which are all not meant to last. Out of these materials she created a kind of changeable and transient “protagonists,” who didn’t have a final form but rather emphasized the actual process of finding form (as well as losing form). Buck herself said that her works were meant to “simultaneously attract and alienate the viewer.” In the exhibition space the objects should “create a tremor, a vibration and a conversation with its surroundings.” Finding Form presents Bucks complete sculptural works.

In Pieter Slagbooms Zeichnungen geht es um Leben und Tod. Darum, dass diese angeblichen Antagonisten untrennbar sind, in seiner Vorstellung sogar verschmelzen. Das Wesen unserer Existenz umschlingt uns auf seinen riesigen Leinwänden mit eherner Kraft: Wir kommen aus der Leere und kehren letztlich wieder dahin zurück. Abertausende Schwünge wie Möbiusbänder machen diese Wahrheit nahezu physisch erfahrbar. Aus Slagbooms Ursuppe aus Strichen schälen sich Tote und Neugeborene neben Geschlechtsteilen heraus, zu sehen sind überlebensgroße Fantasien von verstörenden sexuellen Handlungen. Pieter Slagboom’s drawings are about life and death. About how these ostensible antagonists are inseparable; how, in his imagination, they are even fused. In his enormous canvases, we are held by the essence of our existence as though by a steel vise: we come from the void and in the end shall return to it. Thousands upon thousands of sweeping lines, twisting like Moebius strips, make for an almost physical experience of this truth. The dead and the newborn emerge from the primeval soup of Slagboom’s lines, as do genitals; we spot larger-than-life fantasies of disturbing sexual acts. The circle of life as a short circuit. The energy of some of the pictures in Slagboom’s oeuvre is almost too much to bear—we shudder before our latent knowledge: that death is suspended in life.

Licht ist das Thema der neuen Gemälde von René Holm (geb. 1967 in Esbjerg). Gesichtslose Protagonist:innen, die symbolische Wälder mit blattlosen Bäumen durchqueren, erschienen bereits in früheren Bildern, nehmen diesen jegliche individuelle oder lokale Bezüge und bringen sie somit in einen spirituellen und universellen Bereich. Totenköpfe mit brennenden Kerzen symbolisieren im Stillleben die Zerbrechlichkeit des Lebens und die Unausweichlichkeit des Todes. Holm geht einen Schritt weiter und lässt seine Figuren die Symbole in den Händen tragen oder sogar selbst zu lebendigen „Stillleben“ werden. Lodernde Kerzen bedeuten auch, dass wir sowohl mit unserem Leid als auch unserem Licht durchs Leben gehen. Wir müssen brennen, um zu leuchten. Light is the theme of the new paintings by René Holm (b. Esbjerg, 1967). Faceless protagonists traversing symbolic forests with leafless trees occurred already in previous works, stripping them of individual or local signifiers and moving them into a spiritual and universal realm. Skulls with burning candles in Still lifes symbolize the fragility of life and unavoidability of death. Holm goes a step further and makes his figures carry the symbols in their hands or even has them become themselves live “still lifes”. The burning candles also mean that we’re here with our sorrow as well as our light. We must burn to shine. Diese drei Haupt-Bodhisattvas symbolisieren Weisheit, Mitgefühl und Macht. In Tibet sind sie als Jambelyang, Chenresig und Chakna Dorje bekannt. Sie formen eine mächtige Triade, die Geist, Rede und Körper schützt und Beistand leistet. Sie sind an ihren Attributen Flammenschwert, Lotosblüte und Donnerkeil zu erkennen.

UFGRUND der sich stets veränderten Schneeverhältnisse und des wechselha en Lichteinfalls werden die vielen Gesichter des Berges, seine Stimmungen und sein Mienenspiel, immer wieder neu und anders wahrgenommen. Gegenüber von Diraphuk, jenseits des Tales, über den symmetrisch arrangierten, niedrigeren Hügeln, erhebt sich die nördliche Wand des Kailas „wie eine gewaltige, vertikale Eis äche auf einem Podest mit zwei Schildwachen auf jeder Seite“– die stärkste und mächtigste Erscheinung des Berges und die eindrucksvollste für den Betrachter. Diese sich ständig ändernde schieferschwarze Felswand steht so trügerisch dicht am Kora-Pfad, dass der Pilger meint, er könne mit Leichtigkeit hinübergehen und sie berühren. Sie ragt 1.000 Meter als ein eisglasierter Monolith in die Höhe, wie ein riesenha monströses Antlitz mit geisterha en Falten, eingraviert in eine Haut aus Eis und Schnee – „die wildesten Halluzinationen der Natur, zu Stein erstarrt“.123
Eine von Angesicht-zu-Angesicht-Begegnung mit der Nordwand des Kailas ist eine insgesamt vollkommen andere Art, einen Berg zu sehen. Jenseits der Ober äche aus Eis und Fels und völlig anders als gewöhnliches Sehen, ist das räumliche optische Wahrnehmen verstärkt, weit über den Bereich des Sicht- und Verstehbaren hinaus. „Es handelt sich nicht darum, dass etwas anderes gesehen wird, sondern dass man anders sieht. Es ist, wie wenn der räumliche Sehakt durch eine weitere Dimension geschär worden wäre.“124 Der geschaute Berg steht da wie ein Vermittler „visionärer Erfahrung“, ein Fenster zu Transzendenz, so überwältigend, dass der Betrachter in Schauder und Demut davorsteht, gebannt von einem klarsichtigen Staunen, jenseits der Sinne und des Denkens. Ein „zeitloser Blick“, ein kurzes Teilhaben an Unendlichkeit und unbegrei ich,
