A Mexican-Aztec inspired brewpub – Tepeyolot Cerveceria – is planned for San Marco, adjacent to the San Marco Crossing apartment development. Owner Luis Melgarejo said he expects the brewpub to open by March at Kings Avenue and Bertha Street. He is leasing the space

from TC Jax Holdings LLC. Melgarejo will serve Mexican-style lagers, as well as IPAs, stouts, ales and possibly sours. He also will have ciders and wine available. He estimates 15 to 20 taps. The food menu includes Mexican street corn, chips and guacamole or salsa, quesadillas, tacos, SEE SAN MARCO, PAGE 2

TIAA Bank dismissed retiring CEO Blake Wilson over unspecified policy violations two months after the Jacksonville-based institution announced he would leave by year-end, according an email obtained and reported Monday by Jacksonville Daily Record news partner News4Jax. The email to TIAA Bank associates from CEO Steve Fischer said Wilson is no longer employed by the bank and “the decision to dismiss Blake” had the Wilson full support of TIAA, bank management and the board of directors. “Serious matters were brought to our attention following the announcement of his retirement, and after a full investigation, it was determined that he failed to adhere to company standards of conduct, and violated personnel and other policies,” said the email addressed to “All TIAA Bank Associates.” The email said Wilson will not receive severance pay or deferred compensation. “We are extremely disappointed to have to make this announcement. It is our expectation that all associates of TIAA Bank maintain the highest standards of conduct. We have zero tolerance for inapSEE WILSON, PAGE 2

propriate behavior at any level of our organization,” it said. Wilson could not be reached for comment Tuesday. News4Jax is the news operation of WJXT TV-4. WJXT investigative reporter Kelly Wiley, a member of the News4Jax I-Team, reported that employees learned of Wilson’s dismissal Monday through an email from Wilson’s successor, Fischer. News4Jax shared a copy of the email with the Daily Record. News4Jax said a TIAA Bank spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the internal memo but declined to issue a comment or discuss the nature of the allegations. The email shared with the Daily Record appeared to cut off before Fischer’s name. Wiley said News4Jax confirmed it was signed by Fischer. Chad Peterson, TIAA vice president of media relations, told the Daily Record on Monday that the bank is “not providing comment or a copy of the internal email.” TIAA announced Sept. 16 that Wilson, 53, was retiring as chairman and CEO of its Jacksonville-based subsidiary, TIAA Bank, and would be succeeded as chief executive officer by Fischer, 50, who was president and chief operating officer. It said Wilson would remain with the bank in an advisory capacity through the end of the year before retiring. Wilson had been CEO since New Yorkbased TIAA acquired Jacksonville-based EverBank in June 2017 and merged it with its bank subsidiary. EverBank CEO Rob Clements retired when the merger was completed and was succeeded by Wilson, who was then president. Wilson joined EverBank in 2002 as chief financial officer. Fischer joined

TIAA is a private financial-services firm. “Our culture comes down to every one of us and the values we bring to work every day. Our work requires our customers’ trust. Melgarejo said the total investment would be close to $800,000. He said he would like to have outdoor seating, but if that isn’t possible because of parking constraints, there would be ample seating inside. He’s working with an interior designer, who suggested dark wood with bright, bold accent colors. There would be a strong Aztec influence in the design as well. because of the walkability of the neighborhood, the developments happening near the site – San Marco Crossing, San Marco Promenade and East San Marco – and the visibility from Interstate 95. “I see the on-ramp and I think it’s pretty much free advertising,” he said. Melgarejo said the space leaves him room to grow and eventually start distributing. “Everybody said go bigger and everybody said plan for growth,” he said. “Assume you’re not going to have enough cooler space from the start, assume you’re going to need more tanks.” Before starting Tepeyolot Cerveceria, Melgarejo was a homebrewer, and then went to work for breweries in Gainesville and in Asheville, North Carolina. Through that, he learned enough to believe he could open his own business. “It’s been something we’ve been talking about doing for a while,” he said.

An Open Letter to the Members of the City Council From Former Mayor Jake Godbold

The only good thing that has happened over the last several months because of the JEA’s idiotic campaign to sell the public utility to a private company is, it has united Jacksonville in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever seen. The opposition to getting rid of Jacksonville’s most valuable asset to the highest bidder is deep and wide. As each day passes and there is another report on the arrogant, ignorant and corrupt goings on at the JEA, that anger intensifies. For those of you who are either supporting the sale or sitting on the proverbial fence, you need to really pay attention to what JEA’s customers--your constituents--are saying. If this charade continues much longer, I predict there will be a citizens revolt and you will most certainly meet their anger and wrath head on. To be blunt: Enough is enough! Everybody knows the plan to sell the JEA was started when the current mayor was elected. Shortly after, he replaced all of the JEA board members with his own hand-picked cronies, a move unprecedented in the history of Consolidation. We now know it was done with the intention of selling the city’s utility. His lock-step board then drove off a very competent and successful CEO, ignored hiring a qualified utility professional as a replacement, and instead, installed an incompetent charlatan to lead the charge on selling the utility.

In the weeks and months since, we have been bombarded daily by stories of deception and greed while the JEA’s flimflam boss tells us the sky is falling, but there is a way we can save ourselves and be flooded by a river of money. I learned as a child that as beautiful as a rainbow can be, there is no pot of gold sitting at the other end. The Jacksonville Civic Council made it very clear in its November 5 letter to the City Council. “...the disposition of our city’s largest taxpayer-owned asset is far too important to be considered in legally flawed, closed-door negotiations that contradict current nationwide trends and could potentially result in negative consequences for the community, including higher prices for rate payers with little opportunity for redress. All we are suggesting is an open, transparent, factual analysis of the process that is in alignment with our charter and Florida law.” It’s time for a City Council vote of no-confidence in the JEA board and its CEO, if not outright removal. End this now! Don’t be on the wrong side of history. And, for God’s sake, don’t fail Jacksonville. Jake M. Godbold, Former Mayor
