Maple Street General Counsel Alexandria Hill said at the luncheon event at the Davis College of Business at Jacksonville University. Moore assured that Cracker Barrel isn’t micromanaging the Maple Street business. “No one at Maple Street reports to anyone at Cracker Barrel except for me,” he said. Maple Street doesn’t spend money on marketing, and Moore said Cracker Barrel officials were surprised to look at his company’s financial statements. “We didn’t have a line for advertising”

Jacksonville’s unemployment rate edged lower in October as job growth surged, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity reported last week. The jobless rate in the Jacksonville metropolitan area (Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns counties) fell from 2.9% in September to 2.8% in October. Duval County’s unemployment rate was unchanged at 3% last month but the other four counties in the metro area were all below Loh 3%, with St. Johns County the lowest at 2.4%. The Department of Economic Opportunity does not adjust the data for seasonal factors, but according to the University of North Florida’s Local Economic Indicators Project, the unemployment rate for the area showed a similar decline on a seasonally adjusted basis. The seasonally adjusted unemployment for the five-county metro area fell from 2.98% in September to 2.89%, it said, and Duval County’s jobless rate fell from 3.17% to 3.05% last month. UNF economist Albert Loh said the unemployment rate remaining below 3% indicates a strong labor market for Northeast Florida. “As we begin the holiday shopping season with a strong consumer sentiment regarding their financial situation, the employ-

Scott Moore knows how difficult it is to start a new business, particularly a new restaurant. It should have been even harder for him and Gus Evans, because neither had any experience running restaurants before they opened the first Maple Street Biscuit Company store in 2012.

“This should have failed but it didn’t,” Maple Street CEO Moore said Tuesday during a talk to the Economic Roundtable of Jacksonville. However, Maple Street became a success story, growing from its first restaurant started by Moore and Evans in San Marco to 33 stores in seven states. And a month ago, Maple Street agreed to a $36 million buyout by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc. As part of the agreement, Maple Street will remain an independent subsidiary run by Moore, with no changes planned for the restaurant operations. “They see what we’re doing and they know we’re doing something right,”

Florida’s first ‘Chipotlane’ to debut Florida’s first “Chipotlane” will debut at the Chipotle Mexican Grill that opens today in Oakleaf Town Center. A Chipotlane is a drive-thru where customers can pick up orders made via the internet or smartphone without getting out of their vehicle. Unlike a traditional drive-thru, where you talk to an employee, all orders are made digitally. The restaurant, at 9671 Argyle Forest Blvd., will be open 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. It’s the ninth Chipotle in the Jacksonville area.

Community First Credit Union of Florida announced Thursday it bought the Diamond-S building Downtown and will expand its headquarters to the LaVilla structure at 701 W. Adams St. Community First paid $4.6 million for the two-story, 32,300-square-foot building and parking lot on 1.7 acres at Adams and Jefferson streets. It bought the property from a group led by Southbelt Park Ltd. of Texas and IGS Diamond S Inc. and Irving G. Snyder Jr. of Jacksonville. The deed was recorded Thursday with the Duval County Clerk of Courts. NAI Hallmark represented Community First in the deal. Southbelt paid $4.4 million for the building in 2017. Jacksonville-based Community First has been headquartered at 637 N. Lee St. in LaVilla since 2002. Property

expenses, he said. Hill said Cracker Barrel offered to pay for a marketing campaign, but Maple Street prefers to rely on customer posts on social media sites to spread the word about the restaurants. “Our guests are going to do all our marketing for us,” she said. “We want to keep that grassroots marketing.” Moore believes social media posts carry more weight than an advertising campaign featuring him or other employees. “Those are much more credible,” he said. With no experience running a restaurant, Moore said he learned about the business by sitting in other restaurants, observing customer traffic patterns to make estimates on how much revenue they produce.

ment conditions should remain strong,” he said. The Department of Economic Opportunity’s survey of payrolls found businesses in the Jacksonville area added 22,900 jobs from October 2018 through October 2019, a 3.2% growth rate. Job growth had been slipping the previous two months and was only 1.7% in September. The growth was widespread with the

records show the three-story building is 55,054 square feet. The Diamond-S building previously was the Elkins Building. It is about six blocks from the existing Community First headquarters at Beaver and Lee streets. Community First said it is Downtown’s longest continuously operating financial institution and the purchase allows it to continue to invest in the area. The news release said the acquisition provides an immediate solution to its at-capacity headquarters space and additional walkability for its employees. “Repurposing this existing, nearly vacant building makes economic sense for the credit union, which is member owned,” the release said. The credit union said it estimated the cost of property and a newly constructed building at more than double the cost of renovating and reusing the existing building.

“You need to understand what to anticipate in opening stores,” he said. He also spent five months experimenting with recipes and inviting friends and family over every Thursday night to try the food, telling him what they liked and didn’t like. That helped Maple Street come up with unique menu items. “Everyone knows biscuits. They’re comfort food,” Moore said. “They’ve never had it with goat cheese and pepper jelly.” You can get that on a fried chicken biscuit called the Squawking Goat. The goal was to find customers who would go out of their way to drive to Maple Street, as opposed to customers who might get a Subway sandwich because the Subway store is an “option” inside a Walmart supercenter, Moore said. “I always wanted to be a destination, not an option.” MBASCH@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM

biggest gain in the professional, scientific and technical services sector which added 5,300 jobs in the past year, or 11.7%. The construction sector was also strong, growing by 4,300 jobs, or 9.7%. One exception to the growth was the transportation, warehousing and utilities sector which lost 1,500 jobs in the 12-month period, or 4%. Jacksonville’s job growth beat Florida’s statewide growth rate of 2.6%. Florida’s unemployment rate was unchanged at a seasonally-adjusted 3.2% in October, the Department of Economic Opportunity said. MBASCH@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM
