Initially planning to open in August, Downtown vegan cafe and bakery Grenville Kitchen is slated to open by the first week of November. A week before the restaurant’s final inspection in August, owner Jenielle Frith suffered serious injuries in a car accident and was hospitalized for more than a month, she said. Her phone was lost in the accident, and so were her vendor contacts, further complicating the anticipated Aug. 5 opening. After a city inspection, Frith said the cafe and bakery at 311 W. Ashley St. will be ready to open. “Of course you can’t foresee an accident, an accident can happen at anytime,” she said. Frith said she was disappointed she was SEE GRENVILLE, PAGE 2

Jenielle Frith plans to open Grenville Kitchen Downtown at 311 W. Ashley St. in November. The restaurant will feature vegan cuisine.
Wednesday was an unusual day at the Maxwell House coffee plant in Jacksonville. The facility along East Bay Street Downtown roasts, grinds and packages all of the brand’s coffee products that are sold worldwide and customarily operates three shifts around the clock every day. On Wednesday, the production line was shut down for about three hours so that about 100 employees could gather in the cafeteria to assemble packaged meals for Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief organization that supports the United Nations sustainable development goals. The Maxwell House employees were joined for the project by members of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp minor league baseball team front-office staff. Each package will be given to children and families in need and provides six meals comprising rice, soy powder, dried vegetables and micronutrient powder developed by Kraft Heinz, Maxwell House’s parent company. Employees at the Jacksonville plant assembled about 15,000 meals annually for the past five years, but this year, the Jacksonville team decided to recognize World Food Day by packaging 50,000 meals. Their effort was part of a global initiative that packaged 1 million meals on World Food Day at 15 Kraft Heinz facilities in 10 countries.

The Back 40 Urban Cafe to expand The Back 40 Urban Cafe, a St. Augustine Tex-Mex, vegetarian and Caribbean restaurant will open another location, Back 40 Urban Fresh, at 105 Nature Walk Parkway along County Road 210 in St. Johns County. The county issued the interior build-out permit Wednesday. Back 40 announced plans in July on its Facebook page to expand to northern St. Johns County. Owner Paul Moody said by email the restaurant would open early next year. Buildout is expected to cost $200,000 for the 2,332-square-foot space. The restaurant will replace the former Bellini Cucina Italiana restaurant.

Kraft Heinz Maxwell House employees in Jacksonville packed 50,000 meals Wednesday for the international nonprofit Rise Against Hunger.

“As one of the largest food and beverage companies in the world, Kraft Heinz is committed to doing our part to end global hunger. This employee-led initiative to pack 1 million meals in 24 hours speaks to our commitment as a company and individually as members of our communities to help eliminate food insecurity,” said Kraft Heinz CEO Miguel Patricio in a news release. “We’ve been planning this event since February,” said Rex Mullis, Maxwell House facility maintenance planner and organizer of the Jacksonville effort. He’s one of 15 Kraft Heinz mill ambas-
sadors who work with Rise Against Hunger to visit areas where the food packages are distributed and coordinate campaigns in their communities. “We went to Haiti last year and saw what it really does for people,” Mullis said. “When we visited a school, they told us that before Kraft Heinz started providing the meals, it was hard for the kids to learn.” Since it was founded in 1998, Rise Against Hunger has distributed nearly 500 million meals to people in need in 77 countries. The organization’s goal is to eliminate hunger in the world by 2030. MMARBUT@ JAXDAILYRECORD.COM (904) 356-2466

unable to open on schedule. “But you adjust to it, you bounce back and you get up and make it happen regardless because it’s a dream of mine to have this open and my partners feel the same. So we’re pushing forward to make sure it is open,” she said. Frith said the cafe’s website will be up within a few weeks. The menu is set, and taste-testing for it went well, she said. For entrees, she plans to serve vegan mac n chz; chickn’ and waffles – the classic dish served with a chicken alternative; vegan collard wraps; fried jackfruit; and vegan lasagna. Specials will include pholourie and pelau, dishes from Trinidad and Tobago. Pholourie is a dish of fried, spiced dough balls and pelau is a rice dish. She also will serve roti, an Indian flatbread. order of Voxtail – vegan oxtail. For salads, soups and sides, the menu includes lentil salad, roasted veggie salad, caprese salad, crispy onion and carrot fritters, spring rolls and a soup of the day. The bakery will serve 6- and 8-inch cakes and by the slice. A slice costs $7.50 and an 8-inch cake is $35. The name for the restaurant came from Frith’s grandfather’s last name, Grenville. She called it a kitchen because she wanted to include both the baking and cooking aspects of the business into one name. Frith is partnering with St. Augustine vegan, gluten-free bakery IRie Couture Cakery. The bakery wanted to branch out into serving food, so she and a partner decided to open Grenville Kitchen to do that. She attended the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school and has been in the restaurant industry for 11 years.
