I first heard about the “Faces of” concept in 2016 from a publisher out of Omaha, NE. They had created a magazine that promotes local business by featuring a “Face” of a specific business type (e.g., “Face of Architecture”). The publication connected Omaha community members with local businesses, and after talking with other publishers, I learned the concept had been met with equally great feedback in their markets, too.
As someone who’s passionate about celebrating and connecting communities, I loved the idea immediately. In 2021, we decided to bring the “Faces of” concept to the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo and BismarckMandan communities. In 2022, we expanded the publication to Sioux Falls, and since then, we’ve continued to bring “Faces of” magazines to these areas every year.
That enthusiasm has inspired us to continue sharing more stories—now with Faces of Greater Grand Forks.
We hope you enjoy this publication and take the opportunity to get to know some of the people behind Greater Grand Forks’ thriving business community.
In the past 16 years, we’ve created over 600 magazines—all focused on telling positive, communitydriven stories. “Faces of Greater Grand Forks” is another
piece of that mission, and we believe you’ll enjoy reading about the people and businesses that make this region special.
This publication is considered a “native advertising piece” in the publishing industry. That means each “Face of” feature is a sponsored page, paid for by that advertiser. However, this isn’t a “Best Of” issue—it’s a showcase of the individuals and businesses that help our communities grow. By sharing their stories, we’re connecting readers with local businesses they might not have known about before.
Because it’s a sponsored publication, we’re able to produce it at a high quality and distribute 23,200 copies free to the public. Our sales and editorial teams worked hard to connect with credible, communityminded businesses in each category. Our goal is to help you learn more about the people behind the businesses that make Greater Grand Forks thrive—and to encourage everyone to keep supporting local.

Nicholas Schroeder, Michael Burton, & Michael Hammer

Michael Burton knows service. His background in restaurant and retail management taught him what customers expect—and how to exceed it. Armed with that knowledge, he purchased the North Dakota and Eastern Minnesota Oxi Fresh franchises seven years ago. He started with one van and has grown that into a fleet of 18, serving homes and businesses across North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota.
At Oxi Fresh, carpet cleaning is just the beginning. Michael, alongside leaders Michael Hammer and Nicholas Schroeder, has built a team that prioritizes people. Their philosophy is
to give generously and grow consistently. That approach has powered their steady rise and helped create an operation known for both quality and care.
Unlike traditional steam cleaners, Oxi Fresh uses a lowmoisture system that dries in about an hour. It needs just 5% of the water typical steam cleaners use, making it quicker, cleaner, and better for your carpet. No wickback, no soggy floors, no waiting a day to walk on your own carpet again.
The key is their proprietary cleaning solution, which breaks down grime with an oxygenated booster, then locks it in

with a special encapsulator. Their OF1000 machine lifts the dirt out—no residue, no crushed pile.
Oxi Fresh handles carpet, upholstery, tile and grout, and hardwood floors. It’s been named Franchise of the Year (2020–2023), received the EPA’s “Safer Choice” award, and has helped over 40,000 people gain access to clean water through its Water.org partnership. To date, the company has saved more than 117 million gallons of water.
Backed by a mission to serve and a team that lives it, Oxi Fresh is more than a cleaning service. It’s a people-first business that just happens to leave carpets spotless.

When it comes to lighting, nobody in Grand Forks knows it better than The Lighting Gallery.
Sonia Roberton began her career at The Lighthouse in 1992 and never imagined she’d one day own a premier lighting and furniture showroom. Strong vendor relationships, dedicated reps, and the support of the community helped grow the business into a Grand Forks destination.

a new showroom on the city’s south end. Leaving the original location after 20 years was bittersweet, but the vision paid off. The new space allows The Lighting Gallery to showcase not only lighting but also furniture and décor—from sofas and accent chairs to artwork and unique accessories—set within full room displays to inspire customers.

Managing the full scope of human resources has become increasingly complex. Large companies reduce risk and control costs by relying on full-scale HR departments. But for small and mid-sized businesses, building that same internal infrastructure simply isn’t cost-effective.
Instead, some small businesses roll the dice with a DIY approach or rely on a single, often overwhelmed, HR generalist. In this model, the real cost of HR, including risk exposure, time, and turnover, is rarely measured, but it adds up fast. All considered, engaging an external HR partner provides cost savings. Just as businesses have long outsourced IT, legal, financial, and marketing services, many are now applying the same logic to HR.
Traditional HR outsourcing options often stop at the basics: payroll, forms, and compliance checklists. As a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), PRO offers a full corporate HR department: safety, wellness, EAP, insurance administration, payroll, workers’ compensation claims and coverage, HR technology, and on-site support.
“We offer what feels like an entire HR army, without the overhead,” said PRO Partner Jason Boutwell. “We’ve built the model so that pricing scales with headcount. That makes it accessible to companies of every size.”
Because PRO aggregates purchasing power across its client base, it provides access to Fortune 500-level employee packages, often at a lower cost than small businesses can
