PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Changing the Culture One Coach at a Time In my last President’s Message I outlined in detail, the six factors I believe have been critical to our success over the past 40 years as a company. (1) We are grounded on a people first foundation; (2) We are compelled to grow; (3) We promote from within; (4) We have always made reinvestment in the company a priority; (5) We deliver on our promises and; (6) We value our culture best described as Flynn Family Winning Together. I asked you to email me with your answers as to why you think we have stood the test of time as a company for 40 years and counting, and I have to say, I received great feedback from all across the company. Thanks to all of you who took the time to share your thoughts. In your messages, many of you said you are looking forward to the next 40 years, and so am I! When I think about the next 40 years, I have no doubt these six factors will be just as crucial to our future as they have been to our past. Another factor I know will be key to our future success is COACHING. There is a big difference between DOING and COACHING. Our leaders (at all levels) are very good at DOING things and performing tasks that need to get done safely and efficiently, so we can move on to the next job. In many cases, that’s how our leaders got to be leaders in the first place! COACHING is about taking the time to show someone else how to safely and efficiently perform their duties. It takes patience to show people how to do things the right way, and then it takes time for them to get good at it. It might be quicker in the short-term to just complete the tasks ourselves, but company growth is simply not possible if we don’t have coaching happening throughout the organization. As our skilled people move onto new challenges and opportunities, we need to grow and develop new talent to replace them. It’s critical to our future growth and one of the main reasons we began offering Flynn University for Frontline Coaches or FUFC. FUFC was designed specifically to equip our roofing team members with the tools and processes they need to become Flynn coaches, to assist rookies when they join the crew, and then go on to develop their careers at Flynn. We started with our roofing division and will expand into our other scopes in 2019. Since our first FUFC group in January 2017, we have held nine sessions resulting in over 140 trained coaches in the field who are now back on their crews providing training and support to rookies. You will recognize the trained coaches by their distinctive and unique hard hats. Our Flynn Coaching Program is about more than attending our FUFC training workshop. Our coaches simply cannot be successful without the support of the Foremen and the entire crew. With that said, I am pleased to share we have now arrived at the next phase of our coaching program which is to formally implement what we are calling “Soft Landing Crews.” Soft landing crews are crews that are “rookie-friendly.” They have Foremen and crew members that understand the importance of the coaching program, and actively support it. All crew members are willing and able to assist the coach and the rookie and share responsibility for the rookie’s success. So when you see those cool hardhats out there on the site, now you know what they are up to and that they could use your help! We all have a stake in the coaching program because the success of the program means we have the talent needed for a secure future for Flynn, and that’s good for all of us! Once our soft-landing crews are established, our final phase of the program will be rolling out our custom coaching app which I am happy to share is now complete! I look forward to the success of the soft-landing crews which will be more evidence of our great culture and our Flynn Family Winning Together. Until next time, stay safe. Doug Flynn 1

MINNEAPOLIS Fridley Civic Center Submitted by Tess Puta and Ryan Tollefson

The Fridley Civic Center project for customer McGough Construction began in January 2018 and wrapped up in August. Our work included 5,000 sq. ft. of Hunter Douglas siding, 3,200 sq. ft. of interior corrugated panels and 17,000 sq. ft. of Dri-Design panels.

Land O’ Lakes Submitted by Ryan Tollefson

Flynn Minneapolis recently finished the Land O’ Lakes Sapphire Sky Building with General Contractor McGough Construction in Arden Hills, Minnesota. Our scope of work included 38,310 sq. ft. of 20 ga Centria Econolap siding, 1,205 sq. ft. of Industrial Louvers Inc. mechanical screen wall, 2,000 sq. ft. of 16 ga. Mild Steel interior panels, 2,405 sq. ft. of 20 ga Flat lock soffit panels, and 13,503 ISO Clips.

KANSAS CITY North Kansas City High School Submitted by Archie MacDonald

The North Kansas City High School project consists of a new gymnasium, classroom spaces and an auditorium as well as renovations to the existing high school building. There was a total of more than 25,000 sq. ft. of Centria Versawall, Formawall and Style Rib panels utilized on the project, with the insulated panels acting directly as the main building envelope in those areas. Perforated Style Rib panels will be used in an ornamental ecoscreen function for the future Phase 2 portion of the project expected to start in March 2019. Working closely with General Contractor JE Dunn Construction during the pre-install phase, steel and framing elevations were identified and guaranteed, thus allowing the Centria insulated panels to be ordered cut to length to eliminate material and field labor waste. The extremely small foot print of the project site created challenges for access and material hoisting, but the crew of Janine Pearon, Tom Stephens and Darin Stoll pictured right were up to it!

Men of Steel Submitted by Archie MacDonald

When a previous sheet metal fabricator tried, but ultimately couldn’t perform, that’s when KM Construction reached out to the experts! The call for a custom fabricated 10 Ga stainless-steel fireplace mantel was answered by our special projects craftsmen, Jason Rodriguez and Tyler Foster. The top, bottom and two sides were laser cut and assembled using concealed hardware with hairline butt joints to avoid unsightly warpage that would’ve been caused by continuous welding and polishing. The box shape was then slid over the metal stud framing and secured with construction adhesives. The finished product was exactly what the owner was hoping for, and she couldn’t have been more excited to see the finished product.

KANSAS CITY The University of Kansas Health System: Cambridge North Tower Submitted by Archie MacDonald

This is a continuation of a previous Flynn Flash submission on this same project. Weâ€™re finally at the finish line of the project and the QC Facades/Hunter Douglas QC300 panel system from the Netherlands is being completed in quick order. The large panels on this last phase were nearly 22â€™ long and required the use of two-tier swing stages. This crew did an exceptional job of thinking about safety on the stages, with proper setup and frequent inspections being of utmost importance to each and every one of them. Installing panels on the 14-story North bookend forced us to drill down into our safety rescue plan for swing stage usage. As a result, we have implemented the Rollgliss R550 Rescue and Descent system into our rescue plan for this and future multi-story swing stage projects. After nearly two years on the project, the crew will be happy to move on to their next challenge.

KANSAS CITY

Johnson County Monticello Library Submitted by Kirby Struttmann

In conjunction with McCown Gordon Construction, our roofing and metals work on Johnson County Monticello Library in Lenexa, Kansas totaled 20,700 sq. ft. This is a unique project as the roof slope of the main deck is a 1.25”/ft. making the cricket system at the bottom of the slope 2.50”/ft. The membrane was Sarnafil reflective gray .080-mil FleeceBACK set in Sarnafil’s 2121 water-based adhesive. The sheet metal was made from Sarnaclad weldable metal and then stripped in with .060 membrane. A vector mapping grid was also installed under the membrane on 4,500 sq. ft. of roof at the pave stone patio areas and an EVT test was performed prior to the pavers being installed. The walkout patio has a finished look of multi-colored pave stones by Hanover. Our service department installed these large stones weighing in at 250 lb. per 2’x4’ x 2.5’’ paver. We used Flynn’s new paver vacuum mover, pictured above, to minimize the risk of injury to the employees, and it was a real “back saver” too. The projected completion date will be November 2018. DALLAS - FORTH WORTH New William Beaumont Hospital Underway Submitted by Jeff Cantrell

Crews from Flynn BEC LP are currently working on the replacement hospital for the William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. The General Contractor is a Clark McCarthy joint venture. Our scope of work is roughly 40,000 exterior/ interior metal panels. The biggest challenge we have encountered thus far is the GCâ€™s schedule.

SEATTLE UW Student Housing â€“ Willows Hall Submitted by Trever Gallagher

In conjunction with W.G. Clark Construction Co., our Flynn BEC LP Seattle branch recently completed Willows Hall - a dormitory at the University of Washington. Our scope of work included WRB Building Wrap, flashing and window trim, Batten Seam Metal Panels, ACM Panels, Custom Aluminum Fins, and Standing Seam canopy roofs. This project was very detailed and required a great deal of coordination with other trades. Our work was adjacent to or tied-in with work by the concrete, masonry, window and storefront, and wood panel subcontractors, in addition to coordinating numerous mechanical and electrical penetrations. Flynn took the lead in coordination efforts and helped re-design and mock-up many of the flashing and trim details where our work tied-in with other trades. The project was a lump-sum public bid project in a hot market, and we still managed to increase our projected profit. Flynn worked over 12,100 man-hours without any safety incidents! Congratulations to the team of Matt Rassmussen (Project Manager), John Dunlap (Foreman), John Moore (Foreman), and crew members Robert Kimbrough, Victor Mocan, Travis Cooper, Lonny Voller and Tom Coleman.

SPOKANE

Kirkland Urban Kirkland Urban is a new development including office, retail, and residential space in Kirkland, Washington. Building E is getting closer to completion and Building F is almost ready for exterior finishes. Our scope includes custom metal plate panels, soffits, and fiber cement panels. DENVER Gaylord Rockies Wrapping Up The finish line of this extremely challenging project is finally in sight for crews at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center in Denver. They plan to demobilize at the end of October before the snow comes in.

PHOENIX Chandler Viridian Submitted by Monty Hill

The Chandler Viridian Project is a seven-story midrise office structure in Chandler, Arizona. This is our third major project with Whiting-Turner Construction as we continue to build our relationship with them. International real estate investment firm Hines were also involved. We installed 51,400 sq. ft. of new .80mil TPO roof system. The system consisted of a fully adhered vapor barrier, fully adhered insulation package (r-30), fully adhered cover board and a fully adhered .80mil TPO. This was a high-profile project with multiple trades working on the roof and multiple roof penetrations. With 86â€™ all leading edge, the crew maintained a warning line system and 100% tie-off outside of the warning lines to successfully install this roof. There were plenty of challenges, but the Phoenix team persevered and completed this project. Good work! Northland Performing Arts Center Submitted by Josh Rygg

This was the first time our Phoenix branch installed a Derbigum! We removed an existing Durolast roof system and installed the new Derbigum roof system totaling 22,000 sq. ft. This was an occupied building on a college campus. Crews had to coordinate with the college and a church next door to work to successful completion and did a great job doing so. Andy Chavez is a new Foreman hired to manage this project. Andy adapted to the Flynn Way quickly and embraced our policies and procedures with CARE! Andy and the crew of Miguel Ochoa, Pablo Lopez, Ishmael Montoya and Juan Hernandez Perez are pictured below. FLYNN BEC IN OLD EL PASO Eastwood High School Submitted by Blake Merrick

Through a combination of new construction and renovations, Eastwood High School in El Paso is raising the bar for institutional construction in West Texas. After 57 years in operation, the school’s new look will emulate a Community College Campus and provide the district with cutting-edge technology and a fine arts facility for a capacity MNK Architects rendering of Academic and Administration Buildings from Eastern viewpoint of 2,300 students. featuring the secured courtyard / common space linking science, academic, technology, fine arts, administrative and cafeteria buildings.

New construction consists of a three-story academic building covering 155,819 sq. ft., a 2,000-seat gymnasium and the region’s first “competition theatre.” The construction plan for the school allows for the re-use of many of the existing structures, recycling materials whenever possible. 125,00 sq. ft. of existing structures will remain with an additional 43,072 sq. ft. of renovated structure. Once completed the facility will be an impressive 426,540 sq. ft. All construction and renovations will be happening while the school is operational. The construction completion date is set for the 2019/2020 school year. Teamwork This project is a combined effort between three Flynn BEC branches in the US Southwest: Dallas – Forth Worth (DFW), Phoenix and Lubbock. Bufford-Thompson Company of Dallas and El Paso won the tender for the construction management and chose Flynn BEC as their building envelope company based on a previous relationship for roofing in the Texas region built over the years by DFW Branch Manager Mike Beeter. It was this, combined with the extensive metals industry knowledge of Phoenix Branch Manager Monty Hill, the installation expertise and performance of our roofing and metals crews, and estimates from Brian Rhoades from DFW and Mark Bagus from Shared Services that sealed the deal.

Roofing Systems The roofing systems include an energy efficient insulated John Mansville White PVC roof to the new buildings, and either a Flex PVC system or JM SBS system depending on what is required to match existing systems. In total there are 1,320 squares of new roofing and 387 squares of re-roofing happening over seven buildings. Project Manager Jake Miller is managing the roofing scopes and working on behalf of Foreman Alejandro (Alex) Felipe and crews from Dallas – Fort Worth (DFW), Lubbock and Phoenix. During the installations, Frank Kraus from our OPEX team based in Toronto has been mentoring Alex and the crew on several aspects of the installation. Frank has been impressed with the quality of the installation detailing by the roofing team and enjoys his time with the crews on site. On-site Project Manager Blake Merrick from our Flynn Vancouver branch is also providing support. Alex and the team of roofing specialists including: Alejandro Felipe Jr., Brandon Perez, Jesus Pineda, Jordan Castaneda, Jorge Alvarez, Julio Contreras, Hunter Derrick, Manny Valle, Miguel Najera, Pablo Lopez, Pascal Ramirez and Victor Ramirez continue to persevere to get the job done with a continued high level of quality.

Architectural Metals Systems The exterior design is based on a clean, modern Southwest appearance with strong vertical and horizontal lines and colors in umber, ochre, copper, silver and gray. Monty Hill worked with the various suppliers on insulated metal panels, perforated aluminum security panels, stainless steel mesh interior accent panels and curved metal roofing. YanHua Sun from our Vancouver branch is providing additional drafting for these scopes. The plate aluminum panel specification was changed to a Flynn Axiom system from our Toronto Fabrication Division for the system’s flexibility and quality towards matching the architect’s design theme. Adam Bell supplied design and drafting for the Axiom panels under the supervision of Raimundo Mussa. The skilled shop fabrication team is orchestrated by Marco Santos. These Toronto teams are working in conjunction with Terry Skyba and the TSC scan-team on the supply of the Axiom panels. Terry and his specialists oversee the digital scanning and panel orders for the shop team ensuring unparalleled accuracy for site application. The metals installation team is from the Phoenix branch and is lead by the metals site boss/foreman, Lorenzo Falco. Lorenzo has a support team of Dennis Place II, Jose (Gabriel) Hernandez, Manny Garcia, Javier Figueroa, Solomon Eltsosie, Gorge Rivera and Fernando Martinez. Rick Lacey from our OPEX team is coaching Lorenzo and his team. Rick has spawned a series of reminders through drawings for the crew entitled “Rickie Says.” Although Rick’s time on site is minimal, the reminders are there each day emphasizing lessons learned for the results achieved.

Behind the Scenes Support We want to recognize the following people for their contributions to this project. Special thanks to Dallas – Fort Worth branch members Bentley Martin (safety) DeAn Durham (administration), Leslie Shurtleff (purchasing) Josh Douthitt (drafting) and Joe De LaVega (shop/metals manager) and Phoenix branch members Trisha Dykstra (executive assistant), Bobby Baker (safety) Josh Rygg (superintendent) and Mike Batton (shop manager). Without these people in these essential “behind the scene” roles, the project would not be running as well as it is. The site management team all acknowledge and thank you for your dedication, hard work, and support throughout the project. The Future is Bright El Paso is in the second of two time zones in Texas, approximately halfway between Dallas and Phoenix. Organization of crews and material shipments to and from the site have all the nuances of any remote project but with some of the benefits of having a larger city center nearby. The efforts of the teams from three Flynn branches and our Shared Services make the project viable for expanded business opportunity and a bright future for Flynn BEC in the US Southwest market. Old El Paso is changing its look, and Flynn BEC is there to bring our resources and the latest building envelope technology towards a new and updated vision for the West Texas region!

BALTIMORE Maryland Live! Casino Complete In June 2017, Flynn Baltimore began working on the new Maryland Live! Casino, a 17-story hotel which is now the tallest building in Anne Arundel Country. Our work included 670 squares of Carlisle Fleeceback TPO for the roof, and Dri-Design, corrugated and composite panels. With limited space for material handling, and many trades working on the same site maintaining a safe environment for the crew, and everyone around them, was both challenging and rewarding. The doors officially opened in June 2018.

Roof Replacement for Becton Dickinson Submitted by Manuel Alicea

Noe Medina, Jose A. Miranda, Manuel Alicea, Jeremia Escobar, Gregorio Guevara, Rogelio Echeverria, Isidro Perez and Jeffrey Maldonado (missing from photo) have been working on a roof replacement at Becton Dickinson & Company in Cockeysville, Maryland.

The crew removed the existing roof down to the metal deck and installed the new Carlisle EPDM system. The biggest challenge faced here was that the General Contractor CYMA changed the roofing system to 115 FleeceBACK EPDM halfway through the process. Whereas this project has three phases in total, the first phase will remain 060 Mil Carlisle, and the other two will be 115 FleeceBACK EPDM.

BOISE BSU Fine Arts Building Submitted by Scott Laufenberg

We have been working with Construction Manager ESI on the new Boise State University Fine Arts Building since June. Our work includes 350 squares of Johns Manville fleece backed TPO 80 mil adhered and mechanically attached over five roof levels. On the 5th floor mechanical roof with concrete deck, the crew installed SA vapor barrier with full tapered ½” slope Polyiso system with large crickets with a total thickness ( 5” to 24.5”) all set in two-part adhesive including 80mil FB TPO. The roof area was composed of 138 squares total. The curbs, ventilator housings, and equipment platforms occupied about 55 squares with 47 squares of flashing, all adhered with 80 mil TPO. There were another 40 squares of 8’ and 12’ high screen walls that had to be flashed with 80 mil TPO membrane, the duct ventilation structures (4ea) were 10’ tall and had to have TPO 80 mil fully adhered both sides and the top. There was over 1100 ft. of walkway to install on this deck. One of the more challenging issues was to move materials in and around the various curbs and get rid of the waste from multiple layers of tapered insulation. We had Safeway Scaffold construct a 4’X4’ wide 75’ high trash chute tower which allowed us to remove the trash of the roof to a dumpster below. Weather conditions were clear and hot with temperatures between 90 to 111 °F and because of the high walls and rooftop units, there was little to no air flow. The crew endured some of the most grueling conditions we have seen. Foreman Cory Holden and the crew worked relentlessly to get this roof close to completion. PORTLAND Linn County Submitted by Ryan Low

Our work at the Linn County Sherriff’s office includes 715 squares of Carlisle Fleeceback EPDM overlay over the existing EPDM roof system. The scope includes all new edge metals, coping metal and gutter systems. This is a project for A-Tech Northwest, a large local roofing consultant, with a contract directly to the owner.

Dartmouth General Hospital Submitted by Neil Culligan

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR) is currently helping improve health care services for patients and families, with the expansion and renovation of Dartmouth General Hospital. The first phase of construction, which includes the expansion and updating of the existing building envelope, is expected to take 12-14 months to complete after beginning in the fall of 2017. The Flynn metals team is glad to be a part of this project and is working with PCL to help make it a success.

On the main expansion, Flynn’s Scope includes 6500 sq. ft. of hidden fastener soffit, over 20,000 sq. ft. of corrugated metal siding and a brick like pattern of over 800 Aluminum Composite Panels with Phenolic Panels used as architectural highlights. All exterior envelope work is utilizing the Northern Facades ISO-Clip. Once the exterior is complete, we will be lining the mechanical floor with Channel Wall. On the existing building, Flynn will be working on a number of smaller Aluminum Composite Panel and Phenolic areas, as well as wrapping the AHU Towers with Perforated Aluminum Siding. Since starting the project, Flynn has picked up work to wrap a lateral bracing system for four stair towers with 460 Aluminum Composite Panels and will be working with TSC to produce this detailed and involved fabrication package.

HALIFAX Got Milk? Submitted by Evan Bartram

The Agropur dairy plant is located just outside the city of Halifax, and the scope on this project consisted of removing a ballasted system and installing a new Modified Bitumen system. After receiving positive feedback from IRC Group and Agropur for completing a 165-square re-roof in the summer of 2017, we were invited back this summer to execute this 45-square re-roof. While working at the dairy plant, dust and noise control are necessary. Being able to utilize our Roof Vac machine to remove the ballast within our two-day window helped. This is Clinton Primeâ€™s first project as foreman after a recent promotion. Both the client and consultant on this project are satisfied with the quality of work Clinton and crew have achieved, which will hopefully open the door for more work in the coming years!

Flynn Halifax was awarded the roofing portion at the Emera Terminal Road Revitalization which consists of both new construction as well as a re-roof and includes both Modified Bitumen and a rubberized asphalt waterproofing system. With the project being downtown it was tough logistically speaking, but Chris and the crew executed the removal and re-installation without a hitch! We are looking to wrap up by the end of summer and close another successful project with EllisDon.

FLYNN UNIVERSITY Project Site Tours

Project site tours, an initiative led by the FUNG Flynn Way Task Force, provide office staff with the opportunity to step away from their desks and safely onto active job sites where they can get a closer look and better understanding of the important work we do. Between April and July, tours took place at our Edmonton, Winnipeg, Dallasâ€“Fort Worth, and Moncton branches pictured below. To date, tours have taken place at these locations plus Ottawa, Victoria, Halifax, Calgary and Kansas City with more branches coming on board soon!

Dallasâ€“Fort Worth Leslie Shurtleff, Sharon Warbrouck, Josh Douthitt, Maria Berzoza, Patricia Gutierrez, Jake Miller, Xavier Monge and Bentley Martin got to see a 2 Ply Built-Up roof system. They were introduced to the members of all four crews on site, had a toolbox talk, conducted a standard safety inspection of work areas, and discussed safety topics.

Winnipeg The Winnipeg Transit Site Tour was a success. The shop guys got to see their products in use, the Purchasing Coordinator was finally able to see a crew in action, and the site Superintendent did an excellent job sharing information and answering great questions. Attendees included Jordy Johnson, Breanne van Linge, Jeff Clarkson, Jordan Wolfman, Rod Sass, Vicki Pourier, Bonny Pearson and Neil Chenier.

Edmonton The NWR Sturgeon Refinery tour started at the sire security gate for orientation before entering a live plant. It included reviewing the four steel framed buildings where Flynn was contracted to provide foam/mineral/acoustic wall and roof panels, interior walls and fire rated ceilings. The tour was attended by Jordy Ryhorchuk, Stacey Cockerill, Ryan Goddard, Brandy Gagnon and Rafal Bacinski.

Moncton The Moncton Downtown Centre project is a new arena/event centre in the downtown core. Flynn was awarded the roofing contract on this project which consisted of 1295 squares of both Mod-Bit/PVC roofing. Long-time Branch Administrator Gisele Hebert had visited a job site before but had never been able to see a project from roof level. Site Superintendent JC LeBlanc was able to give her a tour of this project and show her all of the items that she hears about and orders daily but never gets the chance to see. It was a great site tour experience! 19

Steps for Life At Flynn, safety is our top priority. Always. It’s at the forefront of everything we do for our people, customers, and the public. We are proud to share that this year marked our first year as a national sponsor for Threads of Life – an organization dedicated to supporting families after a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or occupational disease. Each year, Threads of Life holds their annual “Steps for Life” fundraising walk in communities all across Canada. Although some of our branches have participated in this event in the past, this is the first year we joined forces to form a national sponsorship which was an initiative led by the FUNG Environment and Social Responsibility Task Force. The summer of 2018 marks our fourth season doing work for Newfoundland Hydro at the Holyrood Generating Station. This project is a Soprema 2 Ply Colply Mod Bit roofing system and our crew, led by Foreman Jason Dawe, is getting lots of attention from the consultant and owners in regards to our workmanship with this particular roofing system coming in at 50,000 sq. ft.

This building has multiple roof levels and being located on the coastline, it is very windy which made this project somewhat challenging, but it’s one that separates us from our competitors!

The old East End Fire Station that sat vacant for years is currently undergoing the transformation to become St. John’s newest microbrewery. The new enterprise will serve as a coffee shop during the day and a brewpub at night offering over 15 types of draught beer ranging from light lagers to IPA’s and stouts.

The Champlain Mall in Moncton is undergoing some big changes with the exit of Sears and the announcement of a TD corporate office taking over the space. Flynn was awarded the 1,080 square Mod Bit re-roof on this project. EllisDon is the GC on this project and have a very tight schedule. At the time of publication Flynn is beating all of EllisDonâ€™s milestones on the project!

Capping off Another Great Project Submitted by Kyle Kennedy

The Precision Medical Centre at the George Dumont Hospital in Moncton is set to open shortly, and Flynn is currently in the process of wrapping up the last few roof modifications and metal flashing details on this project. The project was completed with Moncton based General Contractor Acadian Construction which Flynn has a great working relationship with, often having multiple projects on the books with them at any given time. Jean-Noel and his crew were able to provide the hospital a Mod Bit 8,900 sq. ft. roof and assisted Acadian throughout multiple mechanical curb revisions and additions on the project.

Montreal Airport Search Checkpoint Submitted by Francis Labonté

The Montreal Airport chose to change their x-ray scanner at the search checkpoint for international and in-country departures. Flynn Montreal installed their new interior curtain wall. Mathieu Larochelle and his team made it happen using a Jekko mini crane to lift the 21.5 mm (7/8”) laminated glass 1027mm X 4028mm (40-7/16” X 158-9/16”) that weighed 222 kg (490 lbs). The curtain wall was 95 m (310’) long. 25

MONTREAL The 7 Fingers Submitted by Francis Labonté

In 2002, seven circus artists came together and became “The 7 Fingers.” Over the course of 15 years, the collective has grown. Vitreco recently completed the retrofit of this old building where their offices are located. Work consisted of installing new curtain wall on the outside and glass partitions on the inside. Onsite coordination and shaped curtain walls have been the biggest challenges for Foreman Steve Sirois and his team. Pascal Norris is the Project Manager.

Making Dreams a Reality Jennith Pena, an estimator at our Montreal branch, arrived in Montreal from Colombia on October 5th, 2011. Her husband Omar Malaver and her 3-year-old son Joseph David accompanied her along with what she says was a suitcase full of dreams, challenges and hope. A few months after her arrival, she decided to set major goals including learning a new language, having her second child (a little girl named Valerie), going back to school, finding a new career and buying a house. After taking steps to achieve these goals, Jennith says chance smiled at her. She landed an interview with Vitreco/Flynn and was hired as an estimator. Jennith says that thanks to her stable career the long-awaited moment has finally arrived…she was able to buy her first house! “This was an unforgettable moment in my life, and I want to thank Vitreco/Flynn for giving me an opportunity to work for them, and for permitting me to fully flourish and to finally feel like this country is home,” she said.

COVER STORY Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Submitted by Bob Youngs and Ihab Altobagi

The City of Vaughan is rapidly developing a new downtown core that has been named the “Vaughan Metropolitan Centre” or the VMC. Flynn Facades is currently working on the nine-storey mixed-use building housing a YMCA, a Vaughan library branch, and PwC office space. Our glazing contract totals 90,000 sq. ft. of unitized curtain wall, anodized gold feature fin, entrances, and luminating glass handrails. From the outset, the project schedule was our major concern. The shareholders/partners, in this case, Smart Centre / YMCA (owners), Diamond Schmitt Architect Inc. and PCL, required milestone start and completions be met to suit the on-site construction schedule. To achieve these milestones, the project was phased into 12 different curtain wall types, each with its own start and watertight completion dates with each curtain wall type broken down into the following phases: Engineering and Design, Drafting and Architectural Approvals, Material Procurement, Fabrication and Assembly and Field Installation. Detail planning and tracking by Flynn’s project team was essential to ensure that we met our commitments. Weekly internal project meetings were held every Monday morning to review project status and to discuss any issues that may have a scheduling or cost impact due to project change or procurement issues.

Our second major challenge was to design a curtain wall system complete with a unique exterior gold vertical fin feature. This design involved meeting the required performance values either imposed by National/Provincial building codes, project specification or as required by various building envelope consultants and their teams. The fin feature design are at 500mm increments for all the 2nd floor curtain wall, tied back to the building structure with the vertical mullions. This requirement caused the anchoring to penetrate the curtain wall building envelope causing issues with both structural and thermal performance that our engineering/design team had to overcome. Another concern was that curtain wall modules for approximately 40 percent of the project exceed 35 ft. (11m), much larger in height than the standard modules. This required advance detail pre-planning for: • Assembling, handling and crating by the production team • Trucking and loading operations to ship modules to the site by the shipping team • Special offloading and installation procedures by the construction team • Advance in-depth risk analysis for the development detailed safety plan for the reduction of risks for safe operations of all departments, by Health and Safety. Project Manager Bob Youngs says that teamwork has been the number one key element to project success. “Everyone worked together to manage the project expectations. The design, manufacturing, construction, and safety issues were discussed, well thought-out in advance, and were solved together as a team. Carling Campus Project Phase 2 Submitted by Pablo Juarez

In the early 2000s, the Carling complex located in the west-end of Ottawa was a hub for the telecommunications industry in Canada – nearly 20 years later, the complex is set to re-open as the new headquarters for the Department of National Defence. The campus, which consists of 10 buildings, will be able to accommodate upwards of 8,500 federal employees upon completion. This project has been a joint effort of the glazing, roofing and metal divisions of Flynn Ottawa. Presently, there are nearly 50 Flynn workers on site. Our glazing work consists of the remediation and retrofit of 4,307 thermal panes and 2,218 spandrels. To meet specific requirements, curtain wall glazing was supplied by Carey Glass located in Tipperary, Ireland. The sloped glazing units were provided by Prelco based in Rivière-du-Loup, Québec. This project has also generated a significant amount of extra work which has benefited all divisions of the Flynn Ottawa branch. Our roofing scope consists of a combination of expansion joint repairs, foundation waterproofing, parapet repairs, metal flashings, and membrane replacement at rotunda with conventional 2 Ply Modified Bituminous membrane. The scope of work for our metals division involves a combination of soffit flashings and copings in various locations which include entry gates and guardhouses. One of the unique challenges of this project has been the interruption of wildlife. The 370-acre DND property is surrounded by greenbelt and is a nesting ground to hundreds of Canada geese, deer, fox, muskrats, rabbits, groundhogs, and diverse species of birds. Wildlife can pose unique issues for the health and safety of our workers; it is important to be cautious when approaching wildlife or interrupting their habitat during nesting season and to be alert and aware of wildlife surroundings when operating machinery. Flynn has entered the finishing stages of Phase 2 of the project, with Building 5 now closed. The third and final phase of this project began this summer. We are on schedule to meet the owner’s occupancy date of early Spring 2019.

UTM Phase B Submitted by Cassandra Toffolon

Flynn Toronto metals and glazing crews are currently working on the University of Toronto Mississauga Campus (UTM). Our metals scope includes approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of Custom terracotta tile (exterior and interior Atrium) custom colour and profile, 12,000 sq. ft. of penthouse siding profile HF12, and 2,400 sq. ft. of Hunter Douglas cladding soffit. Our glazing scope includes 4-sided structure glazed curtain walls, conventional curtain walls, external and internal doors, interior frameless screens, free-standing and point glazed glass balustrades, and smoke baffles. Foreman Luis Soares has done an excellent job keeping the project on track and on schedule. He has been an inspirational crew leader and built and maintained a great relationship with the General Contractor Stuart Olson and other trades on site helping guarantee coordination runs smoothly. The first obstacle Luis and the crew overcame was the installation of the heavy terracotta tiles which were, on average, 80 lb. per piece. They managed to install approximately 100+ tiles per day to ensure we met our project goals. Despite the logistic restrictions of material deliveries and fast-tracked scheduling, he ensured there were minimal issues along the way. Aside from this current project, Flynn has also done work on three other buildings on this campus. Due to the amazing work of our foremen, we continue to be at the top of UTMâ€™s list for sub trades on this campus.

TORONTO AIA Conference 2018 Submitted by Luana Buratynski

As you may already know, Northern Facades Ltd. (NFL) is a supply-only design and manufacturer of exterior wall cladding solutions. We supply our manufactured cladding systems and unitized curtain wall solutions to reputable cladding contractors across North America. NFL proudly supports the following organizations: Construction Specification Canada (CSC), Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) USA, and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). We have been attending their regional and national trade throughout 2018, which has proven to be a great year for NFL, promoting our Architectural Panel Systems across North America. Most recently in June, we attended the AIA 2018 Conference at the Javits Convention Center in New York City. NFL partnered with TSC Consulting to offer our American customers a complete system solution from custom design assist/ fabrication to precision shop drawings with the help from TSC laser scanning. For design and concept of the NFL AIA booth, it took under a year to fabricate a unique visual piece to attract our audienceâ€™s attention and highlight the capabilities and amazing work produced out of the Toronto Manufacturing Plant. The AIA Architecture Expo ran for two days and was a materials playground for attendees as they explored the latest products and technologies by more than 800 leading brands and building product manufacturers. Temporarily built environments were shown packed with solutions that will impact architectural practice into the future. During the conference, the team got a chance to visit 529 Broadway Avenue to see a project previously completed by the NFL team. It was a great way to show previously installed work to our clients from New York. Thank you to everyone who contributed in our plant and office, and a special thank you to Henry Ozog, Walter Lucas, and Steve Katsoras for providing the technical support and for building our mock-up. TORONTO Bay and Gerrard: Residential Condo Project Submitted by Becky Murphy

Amid the ever-changing Toronto landscape, condos appear seemingly overnight. Entire neighborhoods are being transformed in a race to create high-density living. This creates challenging logistical issues…how to build a 40+ story building on a postage stamp sized building footprint? Although the total roof area was only 33,000 sq. ft. there were multiple terraces and levels requiring coordination and communication. Flynn installed the hot rubber roof by Bakor, green roof by NLSM, sheet metal and metal panels.

Let’s Play Ball! Rob Monk from our Flynn London branch was selected by team Ontario to represent Canada in its inaugural USA - Canada Seniors Border Battle in the 50+ division held in Rockford, MI. Canada lost in the finals 27 to 24 to an explosive American team. “It was an incredible feeling and an honour to be selected for this team because it represents a pinnacle of success in the slo-pitch community,” said Rob. BRANDON Shoppers Mall Submitted by David McGregor

This is a hot asphalt 4 Ply, approximately 80 square new addition to the Brandon Shoppers Mall, that includes upgrades to the existing roof to accommodate new stores. The metals crew are doing all the roof flashings, new siding, and porcelain panel over the front entrance. The porcelain panel is relatively new to the region and we made use of our new laser scanning service, TSC. The glazing of two skylights and the front entrance is being done by a crew from our Winnipeg branch. Itâ€™s always great to see multiple divisions from two branches of the company working together. They are working to meet the mallâ€™s grand reopening scheduled for mid-August. The General Contractor on this project is PCL.

This job was a Tremco hot rubberized asphalt 2 Ply membrane replacement at approximately 60 squares. We had an initial hurdle and delayed start when the crane lifting our equipment to the roof broke down on route to the job. Once we got rolling, the crew came together to make up for the delayed start and finished the job well before the deadline. Good work team! Our Winnipeg roofing crew is currently completing the installation of pavers and green roofing at 390 on the River. Flynnâ€™s scope consisted of 160 squares of SBS roofing over six roof levels from level 6 to the penthouse on level 24. Also included in the scope of work were three patio areas with pavers and a garden area which includes pavers, plants, gravel, and walkways. Flynnâ€™s crew lead by Elkin Vergara have been working on this project scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2018.

WINNIPEG RRC Interior Glazing Submitted by Dave Robinson

Flynn Winnipeg has been busy working in all three scopes for the new Trades and Technology building at Red River College. While the roofing and metals crews were busy working to make the exterior of the building look pristine, the glazing crew was hard at work on all the interior glazing. The main attraction was the 108-piece guardrail glass that went around the entire second-floor hallway, which included two feature staircases meant to be the focus of the guardrail system, while also filling the entire building with mullionless glazing partitions and full height display case doors. The idea is to leave as much of it exposed as possible, giving future students a chance to peer into the classroom experience. The amount of glazing makes this feel like a truly transparent workspace. Pictured are a few examples of the amazing work this crew has produced on this project!

Hi Mark, At the PCL office a few weeks ago, I came across a Flynn service truck parked beside our office building with an extension ladder set up to access the roof and pylons delineating the area. I was pleased to see the care taken by Foremen Steven and Ryan in setting up the work area and in how they worked together; holding the ladder to secure it while the other one was climbing down after completing the work. I thought I would take the opportunity to ‘Catch Excellence in Action’ and show Steven and Ryan my sincere appreciation for the work they do, and more importantly, how they were doing it. I got the impression that they were caught off guard when I approached to say thank you and present them with a Tim Horton’s gift card I happened to have sitting in my office. I figured it was as a simple way of giving them recognition for making a positive difference. I know we are in an industry with high demands when it comes to the work we do. And our respective organizations have even higher expectations for meeting those demands with safety excellence. The focus is usually placed where something has failed in order to try and correct the situation. Whereas, we experience success far more frequently (it just might not be as obvious because it’s what’s expected) and should focus on emulating those successes for a compounded effect. This experience has been a great reminder of the lasting impact that timely, specific, honest, and sincere appreciation can have. I will be sure to continue to focus my efforts on ‘catching excellence in action’ and hopefully brighten someone else’s day. Thanks, Anders Wheeler

Flynn Regina is working with Bird Construction to build two portable classrooms for one of the P3 schools being built in Regina. Our contract consists of 54 squares of insulated metal panels strapped with hat channel, installing 54 squares of vertical corrugated cladding, and 22 squares of TPO roofing. The crew helping to offload the two cranes were Adam Kuntz, Ryan McAfee, Riley Williams and Tyler Robinson. 41

LLC Trades Centre Phase 2

Flynn Industrial is currently leading a multi-scope project following an extremely successful test scope of work in 2017. Work has just commenced on phase 2 of the metal roof and skylight replacement on the Lakeland College campus in Vermilion, Alberta and is projected to run into early 2019. The Vermilion project includes the removal of both an existing metal roof by FIL, skylight by MWG, and the installation of a new metal roof system and a new glazed skylight system with some roofing and membrane tie-ins being completed by service roofing Edmonton. The Flynn commitment to the safety of not only our crews but the students, faculty, and visitors of the college resulted in the College being more than comfortable having us back on site to continue with their re-roof work this year. CALGARY Mount Royal Hotel Submitted by Nicole McIntyre

Shortly after this team successfully completed the Banff Gondola in September 2016 with PCL, the Mount Royal Hotel burnt down in December evacuating 297 guests safely. Originally built in 1908 to host 60 guests, it was purchased by the Brewster Family for $75,000 in 1912. Over the next several decades, the hotel expanded multiple times, and in 1992 it was integrated to the attached Cascade Inn, which brought the hotel to its current size. In 2017, PCL requested that Flynn price and assist with the design including new canopies (zinc tiles), Flynn Hidden Fastener fireplace, and entranceway which included a unique laser cut brass screen the storefront. This was a high-profile job, and the crew got to site in spring 2018 at prime tourist season in Banff which meant they had to work night shifts as the sidewalks in front were always full with tourists and unable to be shut down during the day. We continue to build a great relationship with PCL and thank the crew for their hard work!

The New Central Library is one of Calgary’s most anticipated projects set to open its doors in November 2018 in East Village. This 553 square multi-scope project included: Sopravapr, sloped EPS, 2” ISO, ½” Densdeck, Sopraply Torch Base 520 and Sopraply Traffic Torch Cap 561. Roofing has recently been completed. Once its doors are open, it will be one of Calgary’s most important civic institutions and architectural icons bringing people together to, learn, read, relax!

EDMONTON St. Bernard School Submitted by Anthony Feltham

Our Edmonton production crew recently completed a 112 square re-roof at St. Bernard school in NW Edmonton. The project was awarded by the Edmonton Catholic School Board on June 28th and our crews quickly got to work to meet the tight deadline. The school had scheduled a kid’s summer camp beginning on July 23rd with several outdoor activities planned for the group (and the project was surrounded by playgrounds on all sides of the building.) EDMONTON Edmonton Light Rail Transit Expansion Submitted by Jordy Ryhorchuk

Flynn Edmonton is working on the Valley Line Light Rail Transit Expansion, a multi-scope project in Edmonton. We are constructing this building for TransEd, a consortium of the following partnership companies: The City of Edmonton, Bechtel, EllisDon, Bombardier, and Fengate. The Valley Line has 11 stops throughout the city and we have been contracted to work on the Gerry Wright OMF (Operations and Maintenance Facility) Building. The building is the operations and maintenance facility for all the Light Rail Transit trains that will be the facility of housing, cleaning and servicing the Valley Lines Light Rail Transit Vehicles. Flynn has been awarded two contracts with scopes of work including 840 squares of Kalzip Standing Seam roof sheets that are site-rolled 225 feet long sheets with a Soprema torch-on membrane, 170 squares of SBS Roofing and 660 squares of TPO roofing. Our glazing commenced in August and consists of 6,000 square feet of Kawneer 1,600 UT Curtain Wall framing, 400 square feet of Interior Storefront framing/miscellaneous glazing, acoustic windows, sunshades, motorized vents and aluminum doors with hardware. Glazing will also be working on the TransEd Light Rail Transit Davies Transit Centre starting in the fall of 2018. In the coming weeks the TPO roofing and glazing crews will be mobilizing for their work fronts and will have overlap of all three scopes with upwards of 40 Flynn workers on site.

We were contracted by DCC to perform a re-roof on the wing commanders building at B170 in Cold Lake, Alberta. It consists of five different roof elevations of inverted EPDM removal and installation of over 600 squares of new SBS roofing system. Our guys have been on this project for over two months and faced many challenges working on a secure site like this. DCC is impressed with Flynnâ€™s commitment to the job, workmanship, production and safety.

The Northern Lights Regional Health Centre in Fort McMurray, Alberta is going through a major building envelope upgrade. Our metals scope includes 2900 sq. ft. of ACM, 4,500 sq. ft. of Standing Seam Roof, 76,600 sq. ft. of multi-color and patterned phenolic panels and 34,200 sq. ft. of fibre cement panels. Construction started in May of 2017 and will be completed in 2019.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE TEAM OPEX Offering Roofing and Architectural Training Courses The OPEX team has started offering roofing and architectural training courses to better equip our crews with both knowledge and training. For the architectural training course, the OPEX team built an architectural training facility. The facility is a mock building that allows our teams to practice cladding. The course covers five various systems, which include: AD300 vertical metal cladding, 7/8 corrugated horizontal metal cladding, Prodema Rainscreen, Kalzip FC horizontal aluminum cladding and Accumet 2000 Composite Rainscreen. The course involves five days of hands on training and support. Our first class recently completed with nine graduates from throughout all of Flynn. The course included two separate classes, cold-applied Modified Bitumen, and TPO/PVC welding. Instructors spent five days offering hands on training and review. Penticton Regional Hospital Submitted by Kim Gaskill

This is a huge new construction project in Penticton under General Contractor EllisDon. This is also Flynn Kelownaâ€™s first project with EllisDon and their first in the interior of British Columbia. Not only is it huge with respect to size and scope, but it is also a huge win for the community of Penticton. Citizens have been rallying for an upgrade to their regional hospital for years and are now finally getting it! Members of the community have been stopping Flynn workers on the street to thank them for the great work they are doing. It is wonderful for us to be part of this prominent project that is so highly valued by the community. This project, the largest undertaken by our branch in recent years, is a fully adhered FleeceBACK TPO system. Our foreman TJ Vandale and his crew are doing everything possible to ensure that the GC is able to move forward with production. We would also like to acknowledge our Project Management team for their efforts. All parties involved have gone out of their way to accommodate the GC on this project. Many of the details are very demanding and require meticulous work. It is challenging and time-consuming but offers many opportunities for learning and skill development.

As always, we are grateful for the care and attention taken by our crews to ensure that a challenging project is handled professionally. Our involvement in this important community project will help to spread our name and reputation within the Okanagan region. Thank you to everyone involved for representing our brand so well.

She was learning standing seams and how to align sleeper flashing for cutting anchor bolt holes. Mitch said that this was a lengthy process, but the end result was great!

KELOWNA 2600 Dubbin Road Submitted by Sean MacInnis

With limited access around the site to safely set up ladders to access the roof, this project was challenging to complete. We initially started the project in November and early December 2017, but when the weather changed on us, we had to shut down until April of 2018. We managed to apply the base coat on the house in early December before the weather changed. When we picked back up in April, we had to prime the base coat for the new top coat to adhere properly and had to reclean everything again, basically starting the project from the beginning. We had several team members involved with a very happy customer in the end!

This is a brand new build for National Concrete Accessories in downtown Kelowna consisting of a Firestone InvisiWeld 60 mil TPO system for a new client, Plan B Contracting. VICTORIA District Energy Plant Submitted by Gary Stride

Boiler rooms and mechanical rooms across North America are out of bounds and have been hidden behind walls and locked doors for generations. At this new construction infrastructure upgrade, UVIC is now drawing attention to the boilers and piping systems. The north and east elevations are floor to ceiling windows, inviting the public to view the inner workings of a boiler room. This multi-scope project includes Kalzip roofing, cladding, and glazing. The walls and roof deck are constructed of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) panels. Environmentally friendly and utilizing a renewable natural resource, the CLT is lighter than concrete or steel with comparable strength. Less structural mass reduces the requirement for heavy foundations. High-efficiency natural gas-fired boilers will be the at the heart of The District Energy Plant. This LEED Gold project will operate much more effectively than the current arrangement and will reduce fuel consumption, save money and increase efficiency. Provisions to allow for future expansion have been built-in if required and will be able to adapt to future sources of alternative renewable fuel supplies.

This mild-mannered gentleman was born in the Saskatoon area and has been in the Glazing Industry for 35 plus years: Five years with Fairway Glass, twenty-two years with Prestige, and eight years with Flynn.

32 of those years were spent in the field and the last three with the Vancouver Glazing Shop. The shop gained an employee that was calm, consistent, and very reliable. At our “Annual Safety Day” last year, Lawrence was not able to attend and we missed presenting him with his gift to proudly recognize his 30 years of service with Flynn. In June, William (Lawrence) Christensen decided that his professional days are over and had decided to retire. He is a great example to the younger generation of field and shop employees and we will miss him exchanging stories of his adventures during his field exploits. No one believes him when he says he is 72 years old! Flynn Vancouver is very happy for him and wishes Lawrence the best of luck.

VICTORIA The Government House Submitted by Gary Stride

Government House in Victoria, BC is the official residence of the province of British Columbia’s Lieutenant Governor, the province’s representative to the Queen of England. It is situated on 36 acres of ocean view property in the prestigious Rockland neighbourhood near the heart of downtown Victoria. In fact, when the Royal Family, High Commissioners, Consul Generals, Ambassadors or Foreign Leaders visit Canada, Government House is often their home away from home.

JJ Boudreault and his Service team replaced the uppermost flat roofs and the roof of the porte-cochere on this high-profile and impressive Tudor styled mansion. The upper flat roofs were problematic at best. These roofs are narrow and flat with no parapets. Swing fall hazards abound! In advance of the work, we partnered with the City of Victoria Fire Department to create a formal rescue plan. The Victoria Service Management team has long recognized the difficulty in addressing the significant safety concerns present here and has lobbied the authorities for years to install a permanent fall protection system on the upper roofs. Victoria Service prevailed, the funds were secured in 2017 and work began early in 2018. Extensive reinforcement for the permanent engineered Horizontal Life Line (HLL) system was required within the attic, and this was the first order of business. Structural steel supports for the HLL were hoisted into the attic through the roof access hatch and welded into place (by others). Now complete, the installation of the HLL system is a significant victory for all future workers who must access the roof to carry out routine maintenance or repairs. A Hazardous Materials Survey commissioned by the Property Management team revealed asbestos in the existing roofing system. As such, a Hazardous Materials Abatement Team was retained by the Property Manager to remove the roof. JJ and his crew followed up with re-roofing after the debris was safety bagged by the HAZMAT team for disposal. Replacing a roof like this during two of the rainiest months of the year added to the complexity. The relentless threat of near record-breaking rain instilled an elevated degree of urgency. Add in the “black-out” days when we were informed that no work is to be carried out due to a regal function, our consecutive days on site were negatively affected. Our schedule was even altered to accommodate the filming of a movie! The weather was improving when it came time to re-roof the porte-cochere; however, another substantial challenge was unearthed. The roof deck was found to be in an advanced state of structural decay, well beyond any chance of rehabilitation. The Structural Engineer promptly condemned the entire roof structure. There is no Plan “B” in a scenario such as this. Removing the roof and leaving the porte-cochere open to the sky is not an option for this iconic landmark, a National Historic Site. All parties concerned were immediately informed of the seriousness of the lack of structural integrity of the roof. Our service crew promptly erected fencing, barricades, and signage and blocked the front entrance doors of Government House. All this during the Installation (the proper term for the “swearing in”) of a recently appointed Lieutenant Governor. The Provincial Government Ministry responsible for Official Protocols was not at all pleased with the state of affairs as there was a formal reception for up to 400 dignitaries scheduled midway through the repairs. All visitors and dignitaries had to access the property through the service entrance side doors during the reconstruction phase. It was a significant inconvenience for Government Officials, however; they understood that this was a mandatory requirement far beyond the control of our crew. The degradation of this roof has most certainly been underway for many years. The Flynn Victoria Service team pushed every button possible to accommodate the residents, guests, staff and the management team at Government House during all phases of our work here. This was a very challenging project for our Service team, with perseverance and hard work they pulled it off!

VICTORIA The Colonial Submitted by Gary Stride

The Colonial is a four-story residential condominium building in Victoria. The scope of work included removing and replacing the existing 220 square SBS roof. Foreman Geoff Myers and his crew have been appointed with roof replacements for the last year, exceptionally challenging during the tear-off phase during a season of record breaking rainfall. (They must be secretly awaiting the opportunity for some new construction assignments.)

This is Bravery’s last project with the Flynn Victoria team (pictured above). He has transferred over to our Regina branch. Our loss, their gain. We hope to see Bravery back in Victoria. This year marks Geoff’s 20th with our Flynn family. Whether apprentice, journeyman, lead hand or now senior foreman, Geoff has never backed down from a challenge. Always willing to take on the toughest jobs and priding himself and his crew on the ability to “get er done” Geoff and his crew continue to lead our re-roof program by always striving to do their best and being willing to learn. VANCOUVER Andrew Futerko: Life of the Party It is with tremendous sadness and heartache that we inform everyone that a member of our Flynn Family recently passed away in a motor vehicle accident. Andrew Futerko was just 19 years old. Andrew was a second-generation Flynn employee. His father, Shawn, has worked with us for years in our glazing shop as one of our glazing fabricators. Andrew began working for Flynn Vancouver in September of 2016 (at just 17 years old at the time), proudly working alongside his father in our glazing shop. In fact, Andrew had already applied to work with Flynn at the age of 16. Andrew was a very talented and inquisitive quick learner who desired to work in the field and begin his apprenticeship. Andrew began working for our service glazing team and was one week away from finishing his Level 1 Glazing Apprenticeship. Andrew had quickly established himself as his own man and was an extremely valued member of our team. On behalf of the entire Flynn Family, we offer our support, thoughts, and prayers for Andrew, Shawn, and the rest of his family. 57

VANCOUVER Great Northern Way

Great Northern Way is a multi-use commercial space in the heart of Vancouver’s east side. Tenants will include Finning Cat, Samsun and Blackbird Interactive. It sits directly south of the new Emily Carr Campus and down the street from the Mountain Equipment Co-op Headquarters, both Flynn projects. Many Flynn employees have affectionately given the moniker “Flynn Way” to Great Northern Way due to the amount of work completed by Flynn in the area recently. In conjunction with General Contractor Ledcor Construction Ltd. and architects Perking + Will, Flynn Vancouver’s scope of work here includes the following: Glazing (55,000 sq. ft. of SSG and captured glazing; 800 sq. ft. of interior back-painted glass feature; 3,000 sq. ft. of custom frit wind wall; custom architectural bent fins, 2,700 sq. ft. structural canopy; 3,500 sq. ft. guardrail; 3,000 sq. ft. glass sunshade); metals (1,000 sq. ft. Copper Accumet, 12,000 sq. ft. Aluminum Accumet, 7,500 78C metal cladding, installing 16 louvers) and roofing (800 sq. ft. 2 Ply SBS roofing). A few challenges faced during this project were dealing with the reactivity of the copper plank, hanging back-painted glass in the interior lobby, and the alignment of the twisty aluminum fins on the east and west elevations. The copper plank was a pre-finished product that had an accelerated patina on it to “kick-start” the aging process. This patina meant that very specific freight, storage, and handling guidelines had to be adhered to. Metals Foreman Roy Hoyano was more than up to the task and installed what will be a stand-out feature for years to come! The interior lobby glass was meant to mimic a panel system, but with glazing. The roadblock we ran into was how to fasten the clips to the back of tempered, painted glass. Flynn sourced the Monarch Z-clip which has a high adherence surface area using a 3M structural tape. Special thanks to Design Manager John Ngo for working closely with field staff on the layout for the entire lobby feature. Aligning the twisted fin extension from the snap-on cap on the east and west elevations was complicated. The tolerance of the angles was lower than originally anticipated and the accuracy of the bends being low compounded into a large issue that led to re-fabricating some fins. The field workers, under Foreman Jessi Castellarin, spent countless hours adjusting and aligning this signature design element. Given all the issues we faced, Flynn was able to work through them all in tandem with the GC and find constructive ways to problem solve that was beneficial both to Flynn and the client. The Flynn Vancouver team is proud to have contributed to this project in so many ways thanks to the expertise of our field staff and the support of our project management teams. VANCOUVER

UBC Undergrad Life Sciences Building Submitted by Romy Tarrayo

One of the most important and exciting parts of visiting job sites is to witness the expertise of our field forces and the support teams that the shop sends to sites. This UBC site which is a project managed by Hugo Huyn and coordinated by Meara Seder is a great example! On an overcast, wet and chilly day a few months ago, Plant Manager Romy Tarrayo and Quality Control Manager Igor Radvan went to the site to check out the work being completed and to observe the unloading and spotting of frame crates in one of the elevations. The crane truck (truck 42) was already parked, secured and ready to unload. Site Foreman Evan Morrison and Crane Operator Sid Boudreau were already in action. The challenge was to unload a 2500 lb. crate of curtain wall frames and then extend the boom with this load through an opening that only had about 12 inches of space left when the materials were put in. After a few measurements, some chains, and slings corrections, the first load was mobilized. Romy was videotaping the whole thing as the boom approached the opening. John Morrison and Tagan Mullen-Halcro were going to receive the load up top. As the process continued, you could hear the shouting of instructions and caution, hand signals, guide ropes getting pulled, and finally, a double thumbs-up from the crew up top. Two other crates of frames were lifted in the same fashion. This was a job well done.

There is no doubt that we have a great group of workers and when they work together â€” safety, quality, and productivity become second nature. Another example of Flynn Family Winning Together!

Camosun Centre for Health and Wellness Submitted by Hugo Huynh

The new Centre for Health and Wellness at Camosun College in Victoria, features innovative design and sleek lines in this modern take on an educational facility. Built to LEED Gold energy conservation standards, the center will provide fluid and flexible learning spaces to house multiple health and human services programs. This includes health sciences, nursing, health care assistant, and medical radiography. To take on a project of this scale, a collaboration between the Victoria and Vancouver branch was established to ensure that the project deliverables would be met. In conjunction with General Contractor Knappett Construction and Stantec Architecture, our glazing work included 30,000 sq. ft. of Kawneer System 2 Curtainwall, 1,800 sq. ft. of Kawneer Skylight 2000 and 10,000 lin. Ft. of Kawneer Versoleil Outrigger Sunshade. The anticipated completion is Winter 2018. The series acts as the main fundraiser for the Manitoba Triathlon Centre team, with whom Madison trains. The centre trains athletes to compete at the national and international level. Several of the younger athletes such as Madison are currently working towards training for the 2019 Western Canada Games. Great work! IN THE COMMUNITY Jerseys for Humboldt Broncos Earlier this spring, the Humboldt Junior A Broncos hockey team were heading to a playoff game when their bus collided with a semi-truck killing 16 passengers and injuring 13, a tragedy that resonated in local, national and international communities. When a group of moms in Langley, British Columbia decided to take a picture of their sons in jerseys to send to the moms in Saskatchewan to let them know they were thinking of them, they had no idea their efforts were about to blossom into what became known as Jersey Day. In a showcase of solidarity to the community, people from all over wore hockey jerseys to work, school, etc. and shared their photos online with the hashtag #jerseysforHumboldt. Jersey Day also raised awareness of the Funds for Humboldt Broncos online donation page on Go Fund Me that had been set up by a local resident. Pictured below are our Flynn family members from multiple branches participating in Jersey Day, a decision which was not mandated by anyone in authority. It was a grassroots decision that came from the hearts of many people across the organization and was a reminder of compassion, support and light during dark and challenging times. At the conclusion of Jersey Day, Flynn donated to the campaign on behalf of all employees. The goals of the campaign was to raise $4,000,000 to help the families cover expenses. In the 12 days it ran, the campaign raised a record $15,172,300.

IN THE COMMUNITY National Safety Stand-Down Each year, the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) hold their annual National Safety Stand-Down Week. During this week, crews are encouraged to take a break and discuss fall hazards and the importance of fall prevention to stop fall-related fatalities and injuries. We are proud to share we had 100 percent participation from our Flynn crews! Flynn talks focused on our “barriers first” mindset by providing refresher training on the installation of Flynn’s PN300, and the proper inspection of fall protection equipment and installation reinforcing our commitment to ensuring we *C.A.R.E* when it comes to fall protection. When it comes to fall protection, C.A.R.E is critical. It’s all about: COMPETENCY: Ensure you have the training/ knowledge on the fall protection system you are using. AWARENESS: Are you aware of the fall hazards and risks? RISK CONTROL: Have you got the correct tools (guardrail, restraint system, personal fall arrest, and rescue plan)? If so, did you review and sign the Fall Protection Plan prior to performing work? EMPOWERED: Are you comfortable with the system in place? Great job everyone!
