President’s Message
'A Worthy Cause'
As I travel across the country visiting our various offices, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there is not much the people within this company are not capable of. Collectively we really are a powerful force. While we have had our share of successes out there, we have certainly been far from perfect. Yet we always seem to find a way to deal with our challenges that ends with a positive result—eventually. For many years, the Board of Directors of the company have discussed the notion of how best to 'give back' something meaningful. As we mature as a company, I am thrilled to advise you all that the Board is now in the position to take some action. We have made a decision that I believe will be looked back upon as a hallmark decision in the company. We are going to do what we can (which I think is a lot!) to further the causes and efforts of the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA). Some of you may be aware that my father Don, the founder of the company, has suffered with diabetes for a number of years now. In fact, he has to undergo five hours of dialysis treatment every other day just to stay alive. My father is a very frank person and he refers to this as 'palliative care'. He is right! I am quite sure that many of you may have a similar story. As we have become acquainted with the CDA, it is amazing how many people are afflicted with this disease. In fact, as I talk to people at Flynn about it, it is affecting many of us right under our noses. A few interesting facts: • Of the current ownership group (all managers in the business, by the way) a whopping 25% either have diabetes or an immediate family member has the disease

The thing about this disease is that it is not outwardly visible, so we may not think about it often. Rest assured, however, those who have it are likely to be prematurely affected with heart disease, blindness, and other side effects that either shorten or threaten the quality of their lives.

So, here we are. We have this powerful force (the people of the company) and a terrible disease. Let’s connect these dots and do something about it while we are all on God’s green earth and can actually make a difference. To start the ball rolling, the Board of Directors have agreed that the company will commit $100,000.00 per year to the CDA. Here is where you all come in. The company will make further donations to an amount equal of whatever the employees of the company raise each year! You are likely to see regional committees popping up across the company with what I expect will be an array of creative fundraising activities. Please, I encourage you all to get involved. Every little bit will help. If we can attack this challenge with the determination and vigor that we attack our daily challenges, we will be part of making diabetes a thing of the past. And THAT is a worthy cause!

Corporate News Join the Cause! Further to Doug Flynn's 'President's Message', as we at Flynn Canada continue to enjoy the steady growth and success of the business we find ourselves in a tremendous position to be able to give back to the community that supports us so well. And what better way to give back than to help fight the disease that the founder of our company faces everyday; a disease that affects over two million Canadians, including many of our staff and their family members. So here is what we’ve pledged to do about it. Each year Flynn Canada will donate $100,000 to the Canadian Diabetes Association. YES—$100,000!!! This donation will serve to benefit the health of all Canadians through diabetes research, education, service, and advocacy. So, what can you do to help? In addition to Flynn’s donation of $100,000, Doug Flynn has made a commitment to match any funds raised by any one individual and/or team from any branch across the country. So get your thinking caps on and let’s make this a competition of region vs. region! We're looking to YOU to come up with creative fundraising strategies. First, we are looking for representation from each one of our geographic regions to join Flynn’s 'Diabetes Committee'. This committee will meet on a regular basis to share ideas and to support and coordinate fundraising initiatives that will take place across the country. A tribute to our management and employees The 50 Best Gala Evening was held at the Westin Harbour Castle this past February 12th in downtown Toronto. This formal event is held annually to recognize the 'who's who' in Canadian business—the 50 Best Companies. And once again, Flynn Canada Ltd. retained its prestigious Platinum status. We should all take pride in this outstanding accomplishment… SEVEN years in a row! It takes a team effort to achieve these milestones and management congratulates you all.
Growth in Maritime Region Necessitates Management Restructure John McManus, Vice President, Ontario/ Maritime region, announced in January that growth and expansion in the Maritime region has necessitated additional management to ensure our core objectives are reached. In order to achieve this, John announced the following changes:
David Boudreau David has taken on the role of General Manager, Maritime region. In this role, David now oversees our three branches in the region and is looking for growth opportunities and efficiencies within our existing divisions. David is staying in Moncton and is reporting progress to John McManus.
Jon White Jon is continuing his present role of Branch Manager/ Partner, Halifax, but is also helping in the development of our metal and glazing divisions throughout the Maritimes. In fact, it has already proven to be a good move. (See R.I.M. story, page 18.)
John Crawford John will return to the role of National Accounts Manager/ Partner. John left this role four years ago to head up the Service department in Toronto.
Jean Lebeau Jean will take on the role as Branch Manager, Moncton, previously held by David. Jean was really looking forward to the move and had a house purchased within two weeks of the announcement. How do you like the commute now, Jean?
Mark Agius Mark has accepted the position of Service Manager, Toronto branch. This transition will take place in conjunction with Jean's and John’s transitions into their new roles. We wish all of these individuals the very best in their important new roles.

Frank Gehry's world-class design for the new Art Gallery of Ontario
Flynn Goes to Asia No we haven’t opened an office in Hong Kong or Taiwan… or at least not yet. But we did recently have representatives visit Japan on a business trip. As we wrote about in the spring '06 edition of the Flash, world renown architect Frank Gehry had been commissioned to design a world-class facility for the new Art Gallery of Ontario. The project (shown at top-right of page in AutoCAD design format) features panels supplied and fabricated from custom bluecoloured Japanese titanium. Mr. Gehry’s firm, as well as our customer EllisDon Limited, chose Flynn for the contract to supply and install more than 16,000 square feet of the product. It is believed to be the first application of its kind in Canada for this particular product, to the best of our knowledge. To ensure that there are no hiccups along the way, Doug Flynn, President and General Manager (top of page, right), along with Magdi Gabriel (top of page, left), Operations Manager, Toronto branch, were off to Japan in late November as part of a quality control program for the project. Upon their arrival in Japan, the guests were greeted by Nippon Steel's representative, Mr. Nakajima (top of page, centre). The visit included inspection of the manufacturing process as well as the final manufacturing of the finished sheet product of polished titanium. The hosts were very welcoming and took great care of our Flynn representatives.
New Flynn Website Goes Live! After many months of painstaking information gathering, meetings, writing and rewriting, we are pleased to announce that Flynn Canada Ltd. has officially launched its new website. The website is in a much more user-friendly format and has a great new look with simple navigation tools and expanded content. The major changes to the site include the ‘regionalization’ of the company into specific geographic zones, specifically BC region, Midwest region (Alberta, Prairies), Ontario region, and Maritime region. Management directories and project lists are each linked to particular products and/or services for easier searches. Specific personnel or project/product information in any given search parameter can now be located. Product information is more comprehensive and provides accessibility to enhanced systems specifications and AutoCAD details. Additional ‘tabs’ have been added for informational pages about Contract Glazing, Risk Management, and how our customers benefit through our National Accounts department. Flynn Canada Ltd. Announces Scholarship Program for Post Secondary Education Flynn Canada is a strong believer in continuing one's education. So as a way to promote post-secondary education, Flynn has set up a scholarship program. This program is specifically designed for the children of Flynn Canada’s employees, in order to help them attain a university or college diploma. "How does the program work", you may ask? Each year Flynn will offer eight scholarships of up to $5,000 each. Four scholarships will be awarded to the children of office staff and four will be awarded to the children of field staff. Another National Accounts Success Home Hardware Almost four years ago we published a story in the Flash about one of our first and largest national accounts, Home Hardware. It was for a new roof system on their retail store in Shediac, NB. Hard work and fast reliable service has nurtured the account over the past few years, and recently Jamie Townsend and Jean LeBeau received a letter out of the blue from Brian Reed and Cheryl Kraemer of Home Hardware. The letter states, and we quote: "Home hardware Stores limited would like to congratulate the national accounts team for the level of professionalism they provide on an ongoing basis. We appreciate receiving the Flynn Flash newsletter profiling your national presence throughout Canada. One of the primary reasons we partner with Flynn is because Home Hardware Stores is national as well with over 1,000 stores. Within our relatively new Real Estate Division, we appreciate the consistency in the Roof Condition Report and Proposal. We like the format, the technical data and quote procedure as we review whether a full replacement is necessary or if major/ minor repairs are needed. Your entire team provides us with excellent service which we appreciate in managing our stores coast to coast. We congratulate the national accounts team on their growth since 1997. We look forward to further opportunities with Flynn and Home Hardware as we grow together.” Quite a tribute... thank you! This letter wouldn't be have been possible, of course, if it weren't for all of the branches who assist us by supplying the valuable and accurate assessments and information required to provide Home Hardware with the level of service and confidence they expect and deserve. All of our branches from coast to coast have participated in a repair or retrofit project or have even replaced an entire roof on a Home Hardware store at one time or another. So thanks again Brian and Cheryl, and thanks to the dozens of Flynn employees who support you and Home Hardware.
T.A.S.K. Submissions
(Teamwork Attitude Sharing Knowledge) Enos Thomas, St. John’s Branch Manager, submitted the winning TASK for this issue, a $200 prize. The Newfoundland branch uses bulk bags for garbage storage on the roof when either a chute can not be set up or where a location for a dumpster isn't available. These bags can hold up to 2200 lbs and can be filled with the torn off roof materials, contained, and then lifted off the roof with a boom truck at a later date. These multi-purpose bags are super-tough and are capable of storing and transporting the heaviest of bulk loads. Other great TASK suggestions included one submitted by Tyler Tomlinson from our Winnipeg branch. It's for a lightweight, reusable, durable, compact and easy to use sign for spray-painting the plywood that covers openings. The signs easily fit inside a knack box or safety tub when folded up and a can of orange surveyor spray paint is all that is used for paint. This is a clean and efficient way of labeling roof openings. The sign is created by Flynn Winnipeg utilizing the turret punch and costs approximately $50 per sign. If any branch would like to order these signs, please contact Mike Dauncey in order to maximize production efficiencies. Darrell McDougall and Ardie Van Buuren, Edmonton branch, had an excellent TASK idea for creating a multi-purpose signpost that would enable us to alert the public or others about our work. The signpost has designations on both sides and holders for flagging or rope. The posts could be used as delineation on the ground or on the roof as a weighted down bump line. The post can easily be made in the shop and can be taken apart for transport. Another great TASK idea was submitted by Shammi Munday of our IT department for how to set your email to automatically check for spelling errors before email is sent. This is done in Outlook by selecting ‘Options’, ‘Spelling’, and then clicking on ‘Always check’. All TASK submissions can be viewed on the Flynn portal at http://portal.flynn.ca. Keep 'em coming, they could be worth $$$!
Our Sincere Condolences It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform our readers of the passing of Bill McManus, Hamilton Service Manager and brother of John McManus, Vice President, Ontario. Bill joined Flynn Canada in 2003 as an Estimator in the Toronto office. He became Service Manager for Hamilton in 2005 and truly enjoyed working with Steven Patti and Lisa Weyers as well as all of his field personnel. Bill collapsed in his office on Tuesday, January 30th. He was only 52 years old. Because of the manner in which he died, and in his memory, the company has decided to install Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) in all company locations immediately. John and his family would like to thank all employees for their kind words and thoughts and would especially like to thank Mark Davis, Hamilton branch, for his efforts to revive Bill. A memorial celebration of Billy’s life was held in Winnipeg on February 10th.

B.C. Region 'Gold Award' Project Earns Flynn High Praise The Vancouver Region Construction Association recently presented the 'Gold Award' for top project over $40 million to Colter Developments. Colter’s project, the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, BC, triumphed over all of the larger contractors for the coveted award. Ken Smith, General Manager, Vancouver Metals, received a letter from Kelly LeRoux, Vice President of Colter, congratulating and thanking Flynn Canada Ltd. for its part. The letter states: “We are extremely proud of our accomplishment and would like to extend our thanks to yourself and Flynn Canada for your performance during the construction of the River Rock Casino Resort. Flynn Canada was second to no one on site supporting our team with hard work, professionalism and cooperative employees in the field. Colter Developments trusts that your team will take great satisfaction in this award as your group at Flynn were a large contributing factor with our success.” Special thanks go out to Project Manager Randy Martsch, a key person for Flynn, who played a large part in the project's success.
The Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Cancer Centre We first wrote about the ARHCC project in the Spring '06 edition of the Flynn Flash. Almost a year later, Flynn has installed more than 200,000 square feet of numerous SBS system types on this project, including full tapered EPS packages up to 24” thick, fully mopped to concrete on a 3 in 12 slope, mechanically fastened to steel deck, and Coltack adhered patios.
The roof was broken into four main areas as well as a multitude of small patios and decks spread over five floors. The entire mechanical system, including all ducts and pipes, were installed on the rooftop. With well over twothousand posts and a multitude of pads and curbs to work around, the work proved to be a real challenge. Flynn Site Foreman Mike Connelly expertly handled the complex project. His crew managed the work with the help of additional manpower from our Abbotsford branch, with Kurtis Bergen as Superintendent. Four additional crews had assisted at different stages of the project. Brent Wentland, Rob Wentland, Don Kristenson, and their respective crews all pitched in to help get through some of the tougher parts of the schedule and work. Sean McInnis and his
crew were added full-time in the fall to push through the final stages—or so they thought. Then came the start of the worst three-month stretch of rain, windstorms, and snow seen in BC in years. What do you do with all this white stuff? When 500-year-old trees are uprooted by mother nature, you know you’re in for a tough haul. In an effort to keep things rolling forward general contractor PCL designed and installed a full canopy over the course of four weeks on one of the 15,000 square foot roof areas to enable roofing through the horrific weather conditions. Walls could not be installed for engineering reasons due to excessive wind loads. Temporary tarps that could not be fastened at the bottom unfortunately acted like scoops in the driving rain and winds, further stalling the progress of the project. With this nearly year-long project coming to a close, and having persevered through true adversity, many thanks goes out to everyone who made that extra effort. Portal Cladding at Security Gates for YVR Expansion a 'Big Hit'!
Winter of '07 Takes its Toll on the Vancouver Wharves
In September of last year, representatives from PCL approached Flynn Canada to assist in the design and construction of new security gate portals for the Vancouver International Airport West Chevron Expansion. The design team of Ken Smith, Dennis Griffin, Troy Johnston as well as the Site Foremen came up with a proposal based on the architect’s and security consultant’s requirements.
Vancouver has experienced an extremely windy winter and the Vancouver Wharves zinc shed was one of many structures that felt the effects of the hurricane force winds. Three translucent panels were blown off, exposing the millions of dollars of interior products to the elements—which are not rain friendly!
The Flynn Canada design mainly utilized a No.4 brushed stainless steel composite plank formed into panels and applied to the security gate structure. All wired security components and scanners were concealed behind lockable door panels. The halfmillion dollar contract was completed two months ahead of schedule and was an early Christmas present for the client. Construction on site was lead by the team of Rick Conniff and Leo Labossiere. The installation crew consisted of a mix of several crews including the skills of metals employees such as Uwe Krieger, Thomas Kelleher, Kelly Brown, Roy Hoyano, Shawn Thompson, John Butters, Laurence Frazao and Monty Heinrichs. PCL project management and the Vancouver Airport Authority are both very pleased with the work performed. Rick Fernandes passed along to us that the Project Coordinator/QC Manager for PCL West Constructors gushed: "Everyone is thrilled with the work the guys have done on site. The portals look great and are definitely a major design feature of this new expansion. I hope someone takes pictures when everything is complete so Flynn can add it to their list of successfully completed projects at the airport performed under a tight schedule.” In fact, they are considering changing the existing security gate portals on the existing airport to match the new work completed by our Flynn crews. Great work, guys!
Right around Christmas Flynn Canada’s Sheet Metal department was called upon to make an emergency repair to ensure no product damage occurred. Our flashing Superintendent Rick Wentland took on the challenge of negotiating a repair plan with Vancouver Wharves. Not an easy task, as there were many challenges due to structure height and slope, winds, immediate repair urgency, and our pending schedule. Due to the immediate requirement of the repair, we didn't have time to order matching colours so they agreed to have a temporary repair done, knowing this shed would be a future re-roof project. Another emergency response quickly resolved.
If You Have the Right People… Gavin Burgess Len Edmondson, Vice President, BC region, announced in late January the promotion and relocation of Gavin Burgess (below) to the position of Service Manager in our Vancouver office. Gavin has been involved with and worked in the construction industry for the past thirty years. In 2002, Gavin was looking for a career change and fortunately ended up joining Flynn in a National Sales role. Gavin came to us with his twenty-six years of proven success in Senior Sales & Marketing and Management. With those qualities and strengths, Gavin helped build our National Sales department. Gavin’s success and skills in management and his desire to grow with the company, made him impossible to overlook. Len went on to say: “It is with our sincere appreciation of Gavin’s commitment to the company, his willingness without hesitation to relocate across the country that we respect and appreciate his ongoing commitment. Gavin’s years of experience and unquestioned commitment to the company will without doubt be a big part of our team and continued success.” Gavin commenced his new role immediately after the announcement. Congratulations Gavin! You’ll be missed in T.O.!

Christmas at Vancouver branch On the final day of work before Christmas the senior staff of the Vancouver branch donned aprons to cook and serve up a fantastic breakfast for all of the field staff. The social committee set up a running PowerPoint of slides showing photos of past special events photos otherwise unseen by the field staff. It was a morning of good food and good times. Following the field event, the office staff ended their day with a potluck lunch followed by a Secret Santa gift exchange. As was the case last year, there was a lot of great food and too little time together.
Frank Suchodolski And BC’s School District #34, has become a Service account for the Abbotsford branch since hiring the district’s long-time roofer Frank Suchodolski (below) as Foreman. The district has since appointed Flynn as its sole provider for all of their roofing needs. Frank comes to Flynn with a lot of experience and contacts in the Service and Maintenance field and the Abbotsford branch welcomes him to the Service team. We’re positive that Frank will help grow the Abbotsford office. The teamwork among our Foremen is proving to be a huge part Abbotsford success and growth to date.
system. The insulation was mechanically fastened to steel deck, then sheets of TPO were laid out to cover the insulation. The bottom side lap of the TPO was mechanically fastened through the insulation and steel deck and the side lap covering this fastened lap was sealed by hot air (welding). Welding of this membrane created a uniform sheet. The walls and membrane to cover them are glued and adhered with all side laps welded to complete the roofing process. Metal flashings were then installed to the top of the walls. In Phase 2 of this Austerville Properties project, our Flynn crews installed an impressive amount of new roofing—more than 85,000 square feet. Our Abbotsford branch crews were contracted by general contractor for the project, Double V Construction, to provide a steel deck substrate to which they installed a TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) single-ply roofing

than 24,000 square feet. Our experienced Flynn crews also mechanically fastened drywall to the deck, and then applied hot tar (mopping) to the drywall. They then bonded the vapour barrier, insulation, and first ply of roofing base that terminated at the walls. Sealing in the walls (stripping) with a layer of self-adhering membrane applied to our final layer of material or the cap sheet. After the base sheet has been applied, we installed the granular surface, UV protected membrane or cap sheet to complete the process. Metal flashings were then installed to the tops of the walls.
Fraser Valley University College A second project with Double V Construction, University College of the Fraser Valley, included the installation of a 2-ply SBS roof system on a steel deck substrate, supplied and installed by Flynn. This project called for the minimal use of exposed fasteners underneath the deck, so our crews used coatings of hot tar (bitumen) to adhere most of our layers of roofing on more

What a Winter for the Victoria Branch! Sunshine Coast Credit Union —Sechelt, British Columbia Sechelt is a town located on the 'Sunshine Coast' of British Columbia. 'Sunshine' except for the past November and December, that is, as Foreman Mark O’Hanley and his crew of Tim Pollard, Clifton Adams, Nick Wilson, Jim Muir, Tim Salach, and Ray Hammon found out. The crew battled severe weather conditions in one of BC’s worst storm periods in years to complete work at the Sunshine Coast Credit Union (right). Big thanks to the whole crew for their efforts in bringing this out of town job in on time. We always appreciate the dedication of our employees who work away from home. This was a complex curved metal roofing job and our client was more than pleased with the exceptional workmanship. Kudos!
Mayfair Mall Flynn Victoria was the successful bidder on a two-phase re-roofing project at Victoria’s busy Mayfair Mall. The system employed was a standard BUR system. However, this job was made difficult by multiple set-ups and difficult access, not to mention the terrible weather conditions that continually hindered progress.

B.C. Staff News Abbotsford welcomes Graham Branscombe to its Sales and Estimating department. Graham has come over from the Estimating department in the Vancouver branch. Flynn Vancouver recently welcomed Tysa Tenebro in Drafting, Derek Beingessner and Mike Wallis in Estimating, Pauline Mott in Document Control and Administration, and Stan Gardener as a Shingles Superintendent.
Against all odds these guys managed to complete Phase 1 of the project on time! Our client was extremely happy, especially that the construction didn't have any negative impact during the Christmas rush. Well done guys!
Three Point Motors Three Point Motors is a two-phase project for Flynn Victoria (pictured below). Our contract with them is becoming typical for many of our customers; one building envelope, roof and walls—one contractor. The scope included a combination of a silver metallic composite panel system and an SBS roofing membrane system. Thank you to both Jason O’Hanley (panels) and Geoff Myers (roofing) for their significant contributions to the success of this project. We are looking forward to starting Phase 2 in 2007!
The Vancouver Metals department would like to welcome the 'UK workers' who have traveled here to re-establish themselves within our office and field forces. 'It’s Our People Who Make Us Strong'

Calgary Westin Project Leads to Edmonton Westin One success leads to another. The Calgary Westin project was design-build, and as such the Calgary Metals division were only given an elevation drawing to work from. However, with knowledge and experience on our side, our Flynn personnel were able to come up with a price to meet the budget as well as a panel layout and details that satisfied the customer’s requirements. Because of the successful completion of this project, Flynn has been awarded a second Westin Hotel project, this one in Edmonton (as noted in the last Flash). A new canopy area and cladding of the Plus 15 (walkway bridge) had also been awarded to Flynn as extras to the original contract.
Our Calgary Service department first mobilized to the site to cut back the existing roof, as well as installing a new parapet and flashings. Then the high gloss architectural panels were installed by (pictured above, L–R): Alan Downey (Foreman), Doug Downey, and Garret Doornwaard. Nice work all around!
Many of us who hear that phrase might think, ‘Yeah that’s true', but then don’t give it a second thought. The trouble is, many of us don't always think about how all of our actions impact our daily challenges. We are all asked in one way or another, either directly or indirectly, for assistance to help a customer with a problem. We even market the fact that Flynn is willing and able to help architects, owners, and general contractors, solve ‘real life’ construction problems. Well one great example occurred in Calgary recently as work continued on one of that growing city’s most prestigious new office towers, the Calgary Courts project. As written about in a previous Flash, Flynn Canada was selected to supply and install the exterior composite panels and metal cladding on the project. Our panels were to be installed on a stud wall substrate. Steve Teal, Calgary Sales and Project Manager for Flynn, was asked if he could help resolve an issue that most people would simply scratch their heads and walk away from. The concern was how to install the studs due to structural cross bracing inside the plane of the studs, and secondly how to finish the inside face and yet support the entire wall system.
Painting them at the top of North America’s highest atrium, 400' in the air with limited access, was out of the question as costs and schedules would have been drastically affected. So, thinking outside the box, Steve came up with the idea of using a structural liner panel in lieu of studs and drywall. The idea called for an 18 gauge 1.5" deep metal deck profile, pre-painted each side with 8mils of a protective vinyl-plastisol paint. The intent was to have the sheets span vertically, roof to roof, and create a structural wall with a finished surface. The idea was embraced by the customer because it allowed faster install and finishing time, structural adequacy, pre-finished appearance, and was within budget. No muss, no fuss, and Steve got a nice extra for his efforts. Bottom line: He kept our customers happy! (And we get paid to do it! How cool is that?) We know that many of you also go the extra mile as well, and that yet your efforts go unnoticed. To you we say a big 'WAY TO GO'! Every time you help a customer with a problem, you help us to build a stronger company. "It’s our people who make us strong!"

Flynn Industrial Continues to be Backlogged with Work
From the Files of Generosity
Few signs exist that the oil sands projects are slowing down anytime soon. Two new projects exemplifying the oil sands continuing phenomenal growth are currently underway at Flynn Industrial.
It seems that every time we at the Flash hear about a story of generosity and compassion there is a Flynn employee at the forefront.
The first is Flynn Industrial’s largest contract to date, the Suncor MCU Project. Located at the Suncor Site in Fort McMurray, Alberta is the Cooling Tower 2 Pumphouse Building with engineering firm Bantrel. The scope of work for Flynn on the project includes a preengineered building, platforms, cladding, HVAC, electrical, process mechanical, and process piping. The team of Flynn Industrial management is comprised of Project Manager Doug Kyle, Superintendent Brad Chapman, and Project Administrator Lorraine Brewer, as well as new Safety Coordinator Steve Warren.
The second is the CNRL Compressor and Blower Modules project for Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. Our client Cord Projects contracted Flynn Industrial to supply and install metal wall & roof cladding and mandoors & equipment doors at their Edmonton Module yard. Project Manager for the contract is Kyle Stewart, while Superintendent Joe Thom handles the field work. Dustin Bennett did a fine job drafting these modules.
A classic example was when we heard that Mike Johnson’s (Edmonton branch, alias ‘the Flamingo') daughter Chaenna had announced that she was going to start a drive to raise money for the Stollery Children's Hospital. Chaenna was going to donate her own hair for what was billed as the St. Valentines Day Hair Massacre. Then Mike’s son Cody decided that he would shave off his hair for the cause as well. Chaenna, however, told her father that she didn’t think that he would also shave his head to show support. Well that’s all Mike needed to hear. He decided to go one step further by dying his hair (below-left) before having it shaved off.
With donations only being accepted until Feb 12th, and with only two weeks to go, they were determined to raise more than the $800 that Chaenna had raised to date. Of course, with Flynn's people now involved the story wouldn’t end there. When Monty Hill (above-right), Calgary Metals Manager, heard about what was happening he told the Edmonton branch, "You tell all those cheapskates up there that I will shave my head if they will throw in $1,000 from their branch!" Derin Franzen, V.P. Alberta region, started that ball rolling by throwing in the first $100. When it was all said and done the offices had raised more than $2,600! Needless to say, Mike and his wife Donna are very proud of their daughter's efforts. It’s all about people, people!

Flynn Edmonton's 4th Annual 'Kids Christmas Party' This year's Kids Christmas Party was held at Mayfield Inn in Edmonton on December 17th. The event has grown significantly and this year seventy-four children attended. Erika, Brenda, Val, and Samantha were great Santa elves while our driver Gerald Dalby had an uncanny ability to change the colour of his beard, all for the kids. Entertainment included puppet show, juggling act, magic act, balloon shaping, but they all paled to the arrival of Santa. Fun was had by all and we are hoping to have even more children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren next year.

The main entrance to this brand new firefighter facility in Stony Plain, Alberta sports the newest rage in architectural panels. The classy Prodema Baq+ wood panel system highlights this 21st century structure. Imported from Germany, these panels are typically 4 feet by 8 feet and 6mm thick. Flynn Canada has used the product many times and examples have been featured in previous issues of the Flash. However, this was the first installation of this product by our Edmonton branch and from where we sit, it looks great!

ScotiaBank Re-Branding Flying Along
The second of four ScotiaBank projects was completed recently by our Edmonton branch. The project consists of two tower sections clad with a 3mm Flynn Accumet 2000 composite panel system in Boa Red. The contract also included hidden fastener, flat profiled soffit sheets in various locations. The next two structures are scheduled for early spring.
Gary Playstead, Roofing Manager, Calgary branch, is following a rising star in the west. No, he’s not chasing the Christmas star. He's describing Tiffiny Connelly (below) who he sees as “a real keener and a great asset to our team”. Tiffiny is Calgary’s Production Coordinator and has set the bar high for her continuing education achievements and goals. She recently completed a Project Management course and a Business Writing course where she received an A and an A+, respectively. Tiffiny and all others who further their education while they're working are learning skills that will help them advance in their careers with Flynn Canada, as well as better themselves. From the Rooftop to the Boardroom Regina's crew of (below, L-R): David Denis, Rob Johnston (Foreman), Ian Beattie, Aaron Bjorklund and Edward Kelly recently tackled what could have been an intimidating re-roof project—but not for these guys. The project was to re-roof a 100-year-old section of the roof on the Saskatchewan Legislative Building’s main entrance balcony.
New Shop and Offices for Our Saskatoon Branch Almost Complete
So far so good, as the latest of Flynn’s expansion projects is progressing well. Once the pre-engineered structural steel was in place, one of the Service crews from the branch began close-in by installing roof deck areas and Accuspeed insulated foam wall panels. The branch is expected to fully move into the new facility by late spring. Congratulations to the employees in Saskatoon. We expect pictures of the grand opening for the next Flash!
The use of modern, sharp, clean lines for exterior finishing has become a 'statement' for many building owners. And so it was with the new Teacher’s Credit Union building in Regina. Work is progressing well through the early winter as Flynn Canada was chosen to supply, fabricate, and install Accumet 2000 composite panels on the fasçias and entranceways.
Flynn Regina Supports 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Screening Bike Run
In the first week of November, the big machines moved in to commence the site excavation for Flynn’s new branch facility at 134 Faithfull Crescent in Saskatoon. Acting as their own general contractor, and with winter upon them, Flynn crews began construction. The Saskatoon branch, as well as others, has seen tremendous growth over the past number of years—in all aspects. Not the least of which in simply in terms of physical space. With 3,400 square feet of new office area and more than 10,000 square feet of shop area, the new Saskatoon building is virtually double the size of the existing facility.
Regina's Teacher's Credit Union Gets Modern Look
The balcony roof area is accessible only through the boardroom of Saskatchewan’s Premier, the Honourable Lorne Calvert. The roof area that was re-roofed required removal of two existing roof systems plus the existing 100-year-old wood cradle in order to access the original concrete roof deck. The new roof system consists of a 2-ply SBS inverted roof membrane followed by one layer of 2” Roofmate and one layer of 2” C/T Roofmate. The square footage of this project wasn't all that large, but due to the difficult schedule, accessibility, and location, this project was HUGE! The work was carried out with very little conflict or disturbance under the watchful 'eagle eye' of Regina’s Roofing Superintendent Allan Samborski. Well done guys.
When Bob Stepp, PCL Senior Project Manager, approached Flynn Regina three years ago to support the Annual Breast Cancer Screening Bike Run, Stan Maciboric and other branch personnel jumped right on board. Regina branch has supported Bob for the past three years now. Bob and his wife Deb presented this year’s donation—over $7,000— from relatives, workplace associates, and contractors and suppliers associated with our great industry. The Stepps were very proud to be able to present this year’s donation on our behalf, and the recipients were truly humbled by the generosity shown. The survivors of the Breast Cancer Screening Program and all associated with the Ladies of Harley have expressed their genuine thanks. Bob and Debbie wrote to Stan: “You should all feel proud of your donations to this great program, it is making a difference.” Good goin’, Stanley and crew!

The Saskatoon branch had a lot to celebrate this Christmas There was a certain mood of celebration this past Christmas in Saskatoon. With construction of the branch's new building well underway, all the employees and their families from the branch were invited to enjoy a Christmas party at East View Bowl in Saskatoon. Bowling and pizza for everyone! (What no beer?) Everyone, well almost everyone, including Santa had a great time. And of course, what would a Christmas party be without a surprise visit from Santa with presents for the kids.
A Striking Mix of Glass and Metal Corydon Ave. Office Building More than 4000 square feet of architectural metal panel was supplied, fabricated, and installed on this striking new Winnipeg office facility. Flynn’s 4mm Accumet 2000 composite dry joint wall system was the chosen product to compliment the massive glass walls of the structure. Crews installed vapour barriers and insulation prior to installing the panels as well.
Opportunity Knocks! Midwest Staff News Our Flynn crews have completed yet another unique product application. This time PCL Construction was looking for a company to supply and install stainless steel metal mesh over the exterior of the new parkade structure at the Winnipeg International Airport.
Our personnel at the Winnipeg branch began to research the specified products and were able to source the more than 15,000 square feet of woven wire mesh to complete the work. Some sixty-two panels were unveiled down the walls of the structure. Since then, other opportunities to work with this product have arisen in various projects across the country. As a result, Flynn is now considering the opportunity to represent the supplier on a national basis. Stay tuned!
Kenora Elementary
The men who performed the work were (above, L–R): Peter Smith, Danny Carmichael, Doug McElroy, Jamie Smith, Barry Schofield, Pat Laurencelle, Stewart Nobiss, Robert Haywood, Brad Schilke and Justin Kilbourne. Flynn roofing crews also installed 8,600 square feet of insulated 4-ply BUR system. And Don Belton, V.P., Winnipeg, is in the ‘news’ again. Don, and his wife Pauline, had the greatest New Year’s gift any parent could wish for this year, with the arrival of their 6th grandchild! New Year’s baby and granddaughter, Reese Pauline Belton, was born 6 pounds 7 ounces, January 1st, to Tasha and Clayton Belton. And they only missed the tax benefit by how many hours, Don? For some reason, guys think of these things. Congratulations to both Belton families!

Flynn praised for work on Pearson Airport, Terminal 1 Expansion Project
Bunge Canada relied on Flynn's Hamilton branch recently when they contracted Flynn to do the roofing work on their new vegetable oil processing plant (pictured above). The main reason: the need for strict security and safety standards—Flynn tops the list in both areas.
The GTAA Pier F Opening Gala was recently held at the new facilities. Many honoured dignitaries were present, including Hazel McCallion, the Mayor of Mississauga, and Senior Architect Cal Smith of SOM Architects. SOM Architects are the Lead Project Design Architects for the ten-year, multi-billion dollar expansion. The following was a comment made to Magdi Gabriel, Toronto Operations Manager, by Cal Smith regarding Flynn’s involvement (from the start of the project—literally) on the Terminal 1 Expansion Project at Pearson International Airport:
Manuel Alexandre was chosen to head up our Hamilton-based crews. Manuel has made a successful transition over the past few months from the Hamilton Service department to the position of Production Foreman, the branch's sixth. Manny’s crew installed approximately 24,000 square feet of new BUR roof system on eight different roof levels ranging from 35 to 100 feet safely and without incident. Another happy customer! The complex project was estimated by Kevin Longpre, the newest addition within the Hamilton branch.
“I have heard a lot about different contractors on this project but the exceptional performance of Flynn Canada has outclassed all others. We really enjoyed working with you and look forward for more cooperation in the future”.
Special mention must be given to Doug Young, Flynn Toronto Project Manager, and Paula Cong, Manager, Toronto Drafting, for their excellent work.
The St. Catherine's Mazda project was a multi-level site, with Foreman Rick Fernandes and his crew completing roofing on five different roof areas totaling approximately 12,500 square feet. The roof system included a vapor retarder with mechanically fastened polyiso insulation, a mopped fibreboard covered with a 4-ply fibreglass felt and gravel roof including both a mopped base and cap sheet for the modified flashings. Once again exemplifying Flynn's versatility in roof expertise as well as solid public relations with the general contractor, the Manorcore Group Inc. Pictured below completing the work are Rick Fernandes' crew of (L–R): Pedro Costa, Armenio Raposo, Rick Fernandes, Ildeberto Anacleto, Dominic Girard, and Brian Fedak (back). Well done guys!

Could You Ask for a Better View While You're Working? Ontario's mighty Niagara Falls The Hamilton Service department recently completed yet another high-security, high-risk project for Flynn. This time the site was on the banks of the Niagara river, the Toronto Generating Station—a literal stone's throw from the Falls, as one can see in the photos (right and below). Safety was imperative and obvious, since a fall would have landed a worker in the water and at risk of being swept over the mighty Niagara Falls. Tony Letterio, Safety Coordinator, was called in to help put a safety plan together, thank you Tony.
And thank you to our Foreman Fernando Fernandes, whose crew of Gilbert Mederios, Mike Palma, Brian Fedak, Carlos Flores and Joe Perira performed the work safely and to a successful completion.
Emergency Service Call Becomes Major Re-Roof for Kitchener As has become the case recently, building owners are having a difficult time finding good, reliable contractors to service their facilities. Being aware of this problem, John Longpre, Operations Manager in our Kichener branch, set out last summer to make a cold call to a facility owner with a pre-qualification package from National Accounts in hand. After a brief meeting with the owner, John simply asked that Flynn be put on his list, just in case. Well, a call from this owner did indeed come—an emergency roof leak call. After further discussions and negotiations, a 33,000 square foot re-roof contract was landed. Perry Wheaton and his crew expertly performed the re-roof work, and we’re now— proudly—this owner’s contractor of choice! Good work John and Perry. Proactive sales calls do work!
Another Cadillac Fairview Success
Santo Garcia and his crew were recently caught on camera hard at work on yet another Cadillac Fairview jobsite.
This project is the Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener with EllisDon. The contract calls for the supply and installation of almost 50,000 square feet of replacement and new roof construction.

No, it's not an edition of 'Creepy Canada'… It’s just the 'unusual' fashion sense of office employees from the Corporate and Toronto branch. Only kidding, it was just a little office fun this past Halloween. Those who gave us smiles were (L–R): Anna Chernin, Jocelyn McCue, Suzanne Chatham, Janette Bertosa, Ken MacLean, Cathy Carpino, Jesse DaCosta, Norma Botelho, and Paula Pena (sitting down in front).
GTAA Fire and Emergency Training Centre The latest update
The sloped black cladding on this Training Centre is actually 'solar wall', as supplied by Conserval. The 8,200 square feet of panelling was installed on 2” acoustic 'Epic' deck product. In addition to the 'solar wall', Flynn installed corrugated cladding inside the building as well as on a roof in the courtyard. More than 5,300 square feet of prefinished blue and grey cladding (pictured below) was installed on the 'jump tower' building. The hidden fastener profile exterior sheet was rolled in heavy, 18-gauge galvanized steel, 300mm wide. In addition, nearly 1,000 square feet of exposed fastener roofing was installed on the roof of the tower. Flynn was also the chosen contractor to supply and install a green roof on part of the building in addition to conventional roofs. John Duff is our Flynn Project Manager on the metals side with Bill Latimar coordinating the roofing.
Potluck Lunch An annual success Virtually every year the women of the Corporate offices and the Toronto branch get together to hold a potluck lunch. Although it is supposed to be for the women, they are always kind enough to invite the hungry guys along to sample the vast array of culinary delights. From traditional to exquisite the ladies sure do know how to put on a spread! Shammi Munday was one of the people instrumental in getting the event off the ground. Shammi selected the date and time of the luncheon and also posted on the bulletin board the list of food choices that the women could bring (artwork included) choosing from “Appetizers, Main Dish, or Dessert”. The ladies then filled in their selection of choice. She also labeled (artwork included) each dish on the table. John McManus once again was kind enough to provide each of the women with a glass of wine to enjoy with their meal. Everyone pitched in to help set up the tables and clean up afterwards. Since our numbers are increasing, there was a wide selection of dishes this year from every background and culture, which added to the ‘flavor’ of the event. Judging by how little food was left over it was the opinion of all that this was the best potluck luncheon yet! And for next year there are plans to label the dishes with the name of the cook so that others can exchange recipes.

But Bruce Iles has even more to be happy about than his promotion to Project Coordinator; Bruce and his wife Kirsten celebrated the arrival of a healthy 7 pound, 13 ounce baby, Brady, on February 11th. And the last edition of the Flash just missed congratulating Manuel H. DeSousa, Estimator Toronto branch, and his wife Sheila who became proud parents to a baby girl, Raquel, on November 8th.

Maritimes Region Glass & Glazing Division Lands Large R.I.M. Contract Research in Motion recently announced their intention to move into the Maritime region with the construction of a large Customer Support Operations Service Centre facility in beautiful Bedford, NS. Flynn was invited by R.I.M. Construction Manager, EllisDon, to tender the curtain wall on the project, since ED has worked on many projects with Flynn over the years, as well as with AGS. The acquisition of AGS Contract Glazing (announced in the Fall edition of the Flash) was the obvious catalyst to put Flynn in the game. Under the guidance of John Silva and Russ Jackson, the estimate was completed, meetings were held, and the tender was submitted. Just before ‘press time’, Jon White received an email from Donald Quon, EllisDon's Atlantic Canada Operations Manager, announcing that the Flynn tender had been accepted. This marks the first Contract Glazing project for the Maritime crew. Fabrication of the Kawneer Unitized Curtain Wall and Glazing system will be done in Ontario. Because the project has an aggressive schedule, engineering and shop drawings were commenced immediately. Coming over from the AGS acquisition to work on the project at Flynn Halifax are Lori Dunn, Project Coordinator, Glass and Glazing, Darris Shaw, Project Manager, Glass and Glazing, and Brian Keough, Field Superintendent. Congratulations to all involved and good luck! We're sure that this project will be the first of many in the Maritime region.
Black Cultural Society of Nova Scotia Praises Our Halifax Service Flynn Halifax was recently successful in landing a roof replacement contract for the Black Cultural Centre in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The existing structure contained various roof treatments including sloped shingles as well as flat roof areas. Dr. Henry V. Bishop, Chief Curator/Director oversaw the work on behalf of the Society, while architect Harvey Freeman of Fowler Bauld & Mitchell Ltd., the Halifax firm commissioned to design and specify the retrofit needs of the facility, made sure that the scope of work was completed properly. Flynn Halifax was contracted, in part, to completely remove all existing wood shingles on the sloped roofs, right down to the existing roof insulation. In order to create a vented air space for the new roof, new wood framing and plywood roof sheathing had to be installed. Finally, new fifty-year asphalt singles with ice and water shield felt underlayment were installed with all associated metal flashings. At the top of the building a flat roof also needed to be replaced. Our contract included the sweeping
of the existing loose gravel, installing a ½” recovery board that was mechanically fastened to the wood deck, as well as the installation of the final 2-ply modified bitumen roof system. In addition, Flynn provided metal gravel stops, a new roof hatch complete with a fold down aluminum ladder, and even painted the wood shingles on the sidewalls of the building. We can do it all, can’t we? Crew Foreman was Gerald MacCormack along with crew members Murdock Woods, Joe Buckley, Austin Laney, Joey Nelson, Winston Colbourne, Lin Gaudet, Ken Goldsworthy, and Jeff Arklie. The two-man unit from the Flynn Sheet Metal group was made up of David Bowers and Jeff Holt. When we received our last progress cheque at the end of the project Dr. Bishop had placed his business card in the envelope. On the back of his business card he wrote, “Thank you for the great job!” Way to go! The good news just keeps on coming!

Distribution Centre Leeds Project Another Successful Leads the Way Foam Project in Moncton It's the way it should be… One contractor to complete and be responsible for the entire building envelope—roof and walls. The fact that Flynn Canada Ltd. is the only 'national' contractor who can offer this service went a long way when Alberta contractor Kor Alta and owner Staples made the decision to award both disciplines to Flynn.
The Latest in Maritimes Foam Panel Success Wal-Marts in New Glasgow, NS and Fredericton, NB The two largest Wal-Mart stores Flynn Halifax has ever worked on were completed recently in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and Fredericton, New Brunswick. The identical retail outlets each utilize some 36,000 square feet of 3“ thick foam panel. John Fleming was Foreman for the installation of the foam panels on Fredericton NB store. In fact, the majority of the foam projects have been installed mainly by one Foreman— John Fleming. So a little research was done, and to show just how successful the team of Jon White, Steve Pass, and John Fleming has been in the Maritimes, check out these stats: Since September 2001, the Flynn Halifax branch has successfully tendered or negotiated thirty-two foam panel projects and has installed more than 670,000 square feet of foam on contracts totaling more than $6 million. The branch has successfully completed eighteen Wal-Mart complexes, five Sobey’s stores, and nine various other projects. It just shows you that Flynn's experience and size counts for a lot, and that we're—yet again—the contractor of choice. What a team!
The Distribution Center is located in Amherst, Nova Scotia, and with the steel completed was scheduled for Flynn crews in February. Some 66,000 square feet of loose laid Ballasted EPDM roofing will be installed with 45,500 square feet of 3” foam panel. We’ll feature this one in the Flash once it’s complete!
Yet Another Large Foam Panel Project! Light Armoured Vehicle Shelter
CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick, is the site of yet another large foam panel installation in the Maritimes by Flynn. This time Randy Boland and his crew got to do their thing on the Light Armoured Vehicle Shelter for Defence Construction Canada. Under contract with general contractor Simpson Building Contractor, Randy’s crew installed more than 16,000 square feet of 4" thick Speedwall in four different colours on the new facility. Below are Alain Richard and Danny Breau installing a drip flash in preparation for the foam panels. Just another foam job, huh, Jon?
Our forces recently completed a Leeds project for Giffles in Moncton, NB. The system consisted of kraft vapour barrier, Poly ISO insulation and a TPO fleeceback membrane fully adhered with fast 100 adhesive.

Flynn Canada is pleased to announce the promotion of Rick Horvath from the field to Safety Officer, Maritime region. Rick was the ideal candidate for this new position. He has been a valuable team member of the Moncton branch for the past two years. In addition to contributing to the Production Roofing department as a roofer, Rick has also served as a Safety Committee member since 2004. This past year he served as co-chair on the Committee. Rick possesses a teaching degree from St. Thomas University and has a strong willingness to learn and help others. He will continue working from the Moncton branch under the supervision of Stu Green, Risk Manager, Maritimes region. In addition, the Maritimes region is also happy to welcome back Roofing Foreman Lewis Gale.
