President’s Message
“Efficiencies, Efficiencies, Efficiencies” There are certain times when we all find that we repeat ourselves, especially if the message is important enough. Well, I have found myself doing this lately as I travel from office to office, and the word that keeps getting repeated is “efficiencies”. When I think back ten years ago to 1996, we had 200 employees, 5 offices, a lot of picks, shovels and wheel barrows—no cranes, no aerial equipment, no formal safety program, limited marketing tools, no email or website (though even back then we were well ahead of our competitors)… I could go on and on. Times are different now, of course. Today we have over 2000 employees, 15 offices, motorized equipment, roof vacuums, cranes, aerial equipment, Risk Management, National Accounts, a Human Resources Department, Service Departments and full Architectural Panel Manufacturing. When you look back, you could wonder why all the harping about “efficiencies”. We’ve come a long way, haven’t we? Well, we have gotten to where we are for a number of reasons; not the least of which is hard work by all who have been here over the past ten years, but also by having “foresight” for all of the aforementioned inefficiencies that we have improved upon. I wonder what this company will look like ten years from now? Well, it’s time to use that “foresight” again! You have all heard of our TASK program (Teamwork Attitude Sharing Knowledge). Each month we receive a number of TASK submissions from all corners of this company. Each and every TASK submission is a reminder to me that ten years from now, we will look back and say “I cant believe we did things that way”, just like we are saying now about 1996. If you are unfamiliar about the program (and yes there are financial rewards for the best TASK idea), ask your supervisor. He or she will be glad to get you a TASK form and assist you in filling it out. Please keep the TASK submissions rolling in—especially you guys in the field. You are on the front lines, and are subjected to our inefficiencies more than anyone. I challenge you all—if you think there is a better way, please speak up! It’s your ideas that will help us to continue to improve everything we do. There is ALWAYS a better way. As soon as we think there isn’t, that just means we have stopped looking for, or thinking about, better ways in which we can perform. Work safe this summer! Doug Flynn — President

Methods to identify TPO/PVC and Hypalon membranes Steve Teal, Calgary, wins the $200 TASK submission prize. Steve submitted that while most roofing personnel know that we can’t weld PVC to TPO, and visa versa, this has led to problems for service personnel as there doesn’t appear to be a sure-fire way to differentiate between TPO and PVC for field crews. The following are some quick field tests from Carlisle and Steve’s own experience for identifying TPO/PVC and Hypalon membranes:

Derin has spent time in our Edmonton, Vancouver, and Regina offices prior to moving to Calgary, where he currently resides. Derin has overall responsibility for all activity in Alberta. Manny joined our company when Flynn acquired the Peerless Group of Companies in 1997. Manny has served many functions; including finance, overseeing Tectum Metal Products Ltd., overall Fleet Management, and building our Risk Management initiatives from the ground up, to name a few. He is based out of our Corporate office in Toronto and is an extremely versatile individual who’ll no doubt be taking on many varied tasks in the years
regional perspective while acting as a national company. Marcel joined Flynn in 1997 when Flynn acquired Peerless Enterprises of Toronto. Leo joined Flynn in 2000 when Flynn acquired Martel Bros. Sheet Metal of Vancouver. Special thanks go out to Brian Semenchuk and Blair Holmes for their contributions over the past year as Guest Board Members—a job well done!
• Hypalon tends to chalk significantly compared to TPO or PVC. If there’s a powdery surface, it’s likely Hypalon. • PVC will tend to pick up more dirt than Hypalon or TPO. • If a sample is cut, PVC will not burn once the ignition source is removed while TPO will typically continue to burn. • Depending on the age of the material, if a sample is cut, the PVC plasticizer smell may still be present on the backside of the membrane. • Depending on the age of the material, if a sample is cut, PVC will be more flexible than a “boardy” TPO (of course, if the PVC is old and has lost significant plasticizer it may be brittle). • If there is a black bleed line on the field welds, it’s probably PVC. • PVC will typically create smoke when welded.
Some more things to try: • Hypalon and PVC have much higher specific gravities than most TPO’s. Cut a 1” x 1” square, wash and wet the surface and place it in a cup of tap water. If it floats or sinks slowly, it’s likely to be TPO—Hypalon and PVC will sink faster. You can use SureWeld as a control. • Hypalon and PVC contain a lot of chlorine; which creates a green flame on heated copper. Take 10 or 12 gauge solid copper electric wire (remove insulation) and heat in a propane torch flame then scrape across the membrane surface and then place the wire back into flame. If bright green is seen, then it’s probably Hypalon or PVC. Most TPO’s do not generate a green flame. They just burn yellow. • And finally, if you have time, immerse a piece of membrane in Varsol. After a few days PVC will become more rigid while TPO will not change or may soften very slightly. Our New AccuPly Panel System— Specified by Toyota Canada for National Dealership Re-Branding After more than sixteen months of design research, testing, and promotion, we were successfully chosen by Toyota to supply and install our Accumet 2000 metal panel system and our new AccuPly composite cladding system for their nationwide dealership re-branding program (for both new and existing dealerships). The designs of the various new dealerships for Toyota’s re-branding program were developed by Omni Plan, an interior/exterior automotive design specialist in Courtice, just east of Toronto. Toyota divided the numerous participating dealerships into two groupings based on sales volumes, etc. Both Toyota and Omni were looking for a high-end composite system for one group and an economical alternative for the other. While they had many wall system options to choose from, Flynn Canada’s metal systems offered the clean, modern lines they wanted for their distinctive Toyota look. So they turned to us to provide both.

Ken Mahoney, Toronto National Accounts, took the lead role in successfully introducing both Accumet 2000 for one class of dealer and our economical AccuPly system for the other. Both Toyota and Omni have and specified these Flynn products for their national rebranding program. Tara Aldaya (Gauthier) who transferred from Ottawa to Toronto will project manage the Toyota program. The first two of these numerous new and retrofit projects were Dixie Toyota in Mississauga (bottom), and Northside Toyota in Sault Ste. Marie (above). In addition to Toyota, Ken successfully negotiated with OmniPlan to supply Accumet
2000 panels and Corrugated Silver Metallic cladding as part of a re-branding program for the storefronts on Honda Motorcycle dealerships, (as shown above).
Group Effort Lands Scotiabank’s Re-Branding A team of Flynn personnel successfully negotiated contracts to supply and install a “lighter” version of our Accumet 2000 system for Scotiabank’s re-branding program. The team consisted of National Accounts personnel; Jean LeBeau, Manager, and Ken Mahoney, Business Development, along with Art Bundschuh, Toronto Metals Manager, and the strong support of our suppliers. The system utilizes 3mm aluminum composite material and perimeter extrusions in a 2’ x 2’ modular panel size. Distinctive red panels are mounted on the towers (pictured above) at their newly built and renovated branches across Canada. The bank is also considering the use of these panels for their international facilities in the Caribbean.

Introducing the National Accounts “team”

National Accounts: Who are they, and what do they do? We’ve mentioned the National Accounts Department a number of times in past issues of the Flash, but some of you may be wondering, “Who or what is National Accounts and what do they do?” The National Accounts Department was created in 1997. They concentrate on direct sales to geographically diverse building owners/managers, who typically would have multiple facilities that could be serviced by multiple Flynn branches—the closest branch to each facility. A National Emergency Call Centre was set up to manage emergency service calls and route them to the nearest Flynn branch. Email confirmation of these calls and responses flow back to National Accounts on a daily basis. The National Accounts Department then follows-up on these calls with the branch to ensure the client has received the requested service. The National Sales Development personnel promote this distinct advantage to an owner; who’s guaranteed a “one-call fixes-all” response, anywhere in Canada. So in a nutshell, centralizing services for large, national customers is what the department is responsible for. These services typically include: • Administration of the National Emergency Call Centre • Managing of consolidated invoicing • Administration of multi-facility maintenance programs • Following-up on roof & repair requests
• Facilitating roof replacements • Preparing and providing customer “Facility Data Management” reporting Specialized roofing programs are offered to customers which consist of annual maintenance and/or replacements. Included in these programs, Flynn provides a national standardized reporting system, detailed roof reports (complete with drawing and photos), as well as documented maintenance records. The department prepares proposals that outline, for example, a 5-year budget for both maintenance and replacement. They maintain all of these accounts and records in an extensive database, which can then be easily sorted by individual building, region, or portfolio name. Annual maintenance programs are tailored to suit individual customer needs. They can be as simple as yearly inspections to a complete phased roof replacement program. Various marketing functions are also an essential part of National Accounts. They prepare direct mail programs, assist with national advertising recommendations, participate in trade shows (on a national basis), and prepare various tender prequalifications for all branches. It became apparent that similar opportunities exist with national customers with our metal building products—especially for national branding programs. The articles on the preceding page regarding Toyota, Honda, and Scotiabank are testament to the fact that their efforts have been rewarded. Ladies and gentlemen, keep up the good work!

British Columbia Everything Old is New Again! Flynn Canada Ltd. acted as general contractor on this multi-scoped, Seaforth Armoury Project, managed by Pete Taylor and on-site Superintendent Kelly Brown. The project contract was directly with Defense Construction and the building owner, The Department of National Defense. The Seaforth Armoury was built in 1939 by Smith Bros. Wilson Construction of Vancouver. This beautiful old building is located at the southern foot of Burrard Street Bridge, in Vancouver. It’s a landmark structure to the city of Vancouver and its surroundings. The roofs vary in slopes from 6:12 up to 18:12, which made for a very difficult removal and installation. The original roofs were a mopped-on asphalt material that was still attached when we stripped the roof down to its base.
Vancouver’s Seaforth Armoury
Our scope included more than 26,000 square feet of Snap-Lock metal roof panels with two layers of insulation and a Peel ‘n’ Stick vapour retarder. In addition, we installed almost 7000 square feet of membrane roofing, and some 8,000 square feet of shingle roofing.
Richmond Child Care Facility
The project began in November ‘05 and was completed at the end of March ‘06—even though it was hampered by more than 50 days of rain… some of the worst weather the region had seen in fifty years! Vancouver fell one day short of the all-time record of thirty-nine straight days of rain, set in 1954. Both DND and DCC were very happy with the outcome and offered many compliments on the workmanship of all of the trades.
The architect and client on this project were looking for a low-maintenance exterior and chose Flynn Canada to supply and install the metal finishes. Working with the design authority, we innovatively utilized several cladding profiles and custom flashings to create the finished product.
Staff members who worked on the project included, Metal Roofers: Derrick Bargen, Diego Gouzalez, Al Adams, Thomas Kelleher, Martin Tousignant, Alex Kovacs-Kout, Eric Hryciuk, Kevin Whittall, Thomas Bolduc, Joe Bourque, Andrew Scott Rob Heatherington, and Tony Qui. Flat Roofers included Louis Pauta, Doug Jannack, Toan Le, Rob Cramer, Scott Campbell, and Mathew George. Shinglers were Martin Davies, Shawn Morgan, Burton Morgan, and Ron Baldwin. Kelly Brown and the crew received three perfect 100% safety audits, as well as passing DND’s safety audit with flying colours. Great job Kelly!

Two More Hospital Projects Awarded to Flynn: Abbotsford & Vancouver hospital expansions Flynn Canada can add two more to its growing list of nationwide hospital projects. The first is a massive, 200,000 square foot Abbottsford Hospital, project managed by PCL. The project is so large that it’s subdivided into four areas of phased work. Three hammerhead cranes provide the required support to move materials around the project site. In fact, the roof is so large— measuring more than a kilometer around its perimeter—that it’s keeping our guys lean and mean as they put on the miles. To date, Mike Connelly and his crew have progressed through Area A; Phase 1, keeping in mind that it’s, after all, a hospital—and hospitals are notorious for the quantity of penetration. There’s penetration through the roof for housekeeping unit pads, pipe tracking curb supports, vents, stacks, etc. Production rates can be greatly affected by the number of these penetrations so work can be somewhat tedious. So far our guys have encountered more than 1000, at last count (mid-April). Due to the size and magnitude of this project, the Abbotsford branch was asked to assist, and gladly responded with manpower on a permanent basis as well as a promise to make additional men available if required. Multi-branch manpower resources is a definite Flynn strength. Great teamwork guys, keep it up!
PCL has additionally called upon Flynn to perform all SBS Roofing, Metal Siding and Architectural Panel work on the Academic Ambulatory Care Expansion for the Vancouver General Hospital. This project, while smaller in total contract value, had many challenges to overcome. But that’s exactly why we were chosen to do the work! The project is located in the heart of Vancouver, which complicates things even more—i.e. employee parking, receiving shipments on-time, coordinating crane time, getting equipment in and out, thirteen levels, being worked on simultaneously, etc. Theft of products and equipment from job sites has also become an issue and overnight security is required. Noise and hours of work by-laws are strictly enforced to minimize complaints from local residents. To date, Brent Wentland, Roofing Foreman, and his crew have progressed well with the patios and balconies as the main roof area was being properly prepared. The project, with all remaining sections of scope of work, will proceed through the spring and summer. Our crew on the project, pictured below includes, (L–R):

Work is continuing on the multi-disciplined building envelope work for this new school in Surrey, BC. Pictured below, an 82-footlong section of Snap-Loc metal roofing is hoisted into place. Metal deck, membrane roofing, metal cladding & roofing were all part of the scope of work completed for Steve Henningson Construction. Roy Hoyano was Foreman, with Colin Holzle as Lead Hand. Jeff Menchner, Ryan Jang, Guy Fleming, Darryl D’ornellas and Rob Hetherington made up the main crew that totaled twelve men at times.
Vancouver Retrofit Project Completed
Crews stopped to pose for a photo recently at the 2120 Cambie St. retrofit project in Vancouver (below). Omicron Engineering & Consulting, in conjunction with Flynn Canada, created a plan to retrofit the building envelope and create a secure work environment for the current tenants. Each member of the crew worked up to five months on this project. Everyone from Management to the Field Crews contributed towards the success on this contract. Congratulations to Rick Conniff (Foreman), Barry Hoyano, Thomas Kelleher, Shane John, Justin Jang, Steve Kim, Jamie Boyd and Dave Hughes. Of course, the project was well-planned by Field Superintendent Ray Bruce & Project Manager Troy Johnston. Another job well done.

BC Staff News In the winter edition of the Flash, Kim Foster, Human Resources Manager, emphasized that many employment opportunities exist within our company.
Victoria & Vancouver Branch Team Up on Joint Projects Vancouver Coastal Health Energy Center The Victoria branch was involved in an interesting and unusual joint project with the Vancouver branch in downtown Vancouver recently. The project saw us supply and install some 24,000 square of Colphene 3000 single-ply waterproofing at the Vancouver General Hospital’s new 4-storey Energy Center. What made the project unusual was that the work for an elevator access shaft was completely underground. In addition, our crews installed a 13,000 square foot plus 2-ply Siplast green roof at the ground level. Upon completion, the space above the energy center will be used as park area. A number of safety-related challenges were associated with this project and had to be overcome; including working in a confined space. Pictured above is Chris Sitter, Foreman (top), and Ron Hill (bottom), working with John Kulczycki and Jessi James (not pictured) within an 18” to 30” wide space between the foundation and a “shotcrete” covered excavation wall. Our regional Risk Manager, Darryl MacDonald worked closely with the general contractor, Vanbots Construction, as well as Action Safety to ensure that all risks to our staff were minimized. We appreciate the coordination and efforts of all parties involved.
The Wave Condominium Development This downtown Victoria project (below) is another joint effort; Vancouver branch for the panels and Victoria branch for the roofing. The two branches also partnered in a similar manner recently on a project at the University of Victoria. On that project, under the leadership of Leo Labrassiere (Vancouver), two of our Victoria employees were trained on the installation of the composite panels. As a result of this training, Jason O’Hanley from Victoria was able to take charge of the panel portion along with Darryl Wallace, who have been working with a crew from Vancouver to complete the project. Congratulations to Jason as he takes on his first major project as Foreman!
Ray Vincenzi, Vancouver branch (below), is a perfect example of someone who seized such an opportunity, and has been promoted from Roofing Field Crew to Roofing Coordinator within the branch. In addition, Peter Nagy has accepted a new role in the Service Department as Service Superintendent, Allan Andrews has moved to Management from Field as Service Metals Superintendent, Gord Edmondson has moved to Project Coordinator, Neil Papais has taken on a new challenge by moving into the Estimating Department, and in the Victoria branch, Ken Littleproud has made the move from the field to management as Production Superintendent. Let someone know what your aspirations are! Congratulations to all. In addition to these inter-company moves, Flynn welcomes the following new employees to BC:

Flynn Exceeds “Full Speed Ahead” High-Tech Wall Customer’s Safety for Flynn Industrial System for South Expectations Campus Structure A while back, Mike Dauncey, Risk Manager— Alberta Region, received a phone call and email from Rob Davis, Lead Safety Officer for Ledcor Construction in Edmonton. Rob expressed his thanks to Flynn for running such a safe site at the River Cree Casino project (featured in the winter edition of the Flash). Ledcor’s comments, as well as crew photos, will be posted on the Alberta Construction Association website. Here is an excerpt: “On January 26, 2006, Ledcor Construction Ltd. presented a number of employees with a token of appreciation for Superior Safety Performance at the River Cree Resort and Casino job site on the Enoch Reserve, west of Edmonton. The workers pictured make up Contractors, Subcontractors and Employees of Ledcor. These persons have lead by example, and are continually training and mentoring employees under their direct supervision. As a token of appreciation, they received a fleece vest embroidered with the Ledcor Group Logo and the Work Safe Alberta Logo. An outstanding job by these individuals, Way to GO!” What a great compliment to our organization, as well as a fabulous endorsement of our commitment to safety. Roger Farkes, our Foreman, did a fantastic job of managing safety issues while keeping up production rates. And, as always, his crew’s workmanship was second to none. As you can see, these actions do not go unnoticed—not by our customers, nor Flynn Management. Congratulations, Roger!
Alberta has seen phenomenal growth as a result of major capital expenditure projects coming on-line in the oil patch. As a result of the recent increased demand for oil and gas, Flynn Industrial has enjoyed steady work in Canada’s fastest growing province.
The Foster Creek Module Project, owned by Encana, is a prime example. Our client, KBR, located in Edmonton, chose Flynn Industrial to supply and install nineteen self-framed modular metal buildings. Flynn’s Site Foreman on the project was Joe Schock. And Fluor Canada recently awarded Flynn Industrial with the supply and installation of a pre-engineered building for owner OPTI’s Long Lake Project near Fort McMurray, Alberta. The Hydrocracker Building contract included all of the structural steel, metal roof and wall cladding, HVAC system, as well as the electrical work. Our site Foremen were Ryan Godard and Cyril Murphy.
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Featuring large Accumet 2000 panels installed behind heavy steel sun shades, this project (above) created major challenges for our crews. Curved fascia panels at the main entrance was also a complex challenge. However, Foreman Ardie Van Buuren, along with Camille Hunt, Jason Kehoe, Roddy Okimow, Mathew Dollar, and Richard Busch took on the challenge and put their skills to work—erecting yet another high profile Flynn architectural metals project. Way to go, guys!

Prairies The Saskatchewan Branches: Quietly go about their business… and make us proud! “It’s different out here”, they say. Not like the big cities of Toronto or Vancouver. Well, they may not have as many opportunities to land million square foot projects, but the Saskatchewan branches have mastered the art of market share. For example, Mike Herman’s office in Saskatoon recently landed and successfully completed an 80,000 square foot metal deck and EPDM roofing project at the Leon’s Furniture Superstore. The guys who helped make the project a success are (below, L–R): Delbert Lathlin, Cory Tootoosis, Vince Obermeyer, Andrew LaRiviere, Adam Cisse, Terry Ozmun, Scott Smith, and Blair Sparvier. Nice work, fellas! And the Warman High School in Warman, Saskatchewan was another successful Saskatoon project. Flynn supplied and installed more than 27,000 square feet of pre-painted metal wall cladding, in addition to another 18,000 square feet of Accusteel architectural standing seam roof. Both aspects of the contract included a complete package of air barrier and insulation as well. The crew that made it all happen included, (top, L–R): Burton Kucher, Jeff Harder, Harley Olson, and Matthew Hourie. And these are only the projects you read about in the Flynn Flash. The Regina Branch hasn’t been exactly dormant either. In fact, they’ve been successful in pulling together with various local businesses in an effort to expand Regina’s Soul’s Harbour Mission House. Flynn jumped at the chance to help
out with the local project; the branch donated the installation of approximately 1,800 square feet of SBS Roof to the new addition on the project. So what’s the big deal? Well, this facility will now allow the sixteen-yearold non-profit organization to combine their soup kitchen, clothing depot, and furnishing warehouse all under one roof. Soul’s Harbour began in 1990 with its creator, Gerri Carroll, who after a near death experience decided to commit her life to serving those less fortunate than herself. When the Mission began, it was simply a coffee house. It was run with the help of a small group of volunteers. A few wooden milk crates made due as chairs. With doors wide open to anyone who needed a place to get warm, share a hot cup of coffee, or take a brief reprieve from their harsh life on the streets, they were welcomed. Over the years, the Mission House has grown tremendously. Today it provides from between 250 and 350 supper meals per day. Soul’s Harbour clothing depot
provides clothing and basic necessities, such as bedding and housewares free of charge. Soul’s Harbour warehouse stores and distributes donated furniture and large appliances free to those in need. In addition to providing food and material goods to those in need, they provide a variety of programs and services; such as addictions support groups, games night, the inner city elementary school program, which feeds 125 children, as well as the inner city high school nutrition program. The list goes on. Sadly, before Gerri Carroll could see the completion of the newly renovated Mission House, she passed away peacefully on March 31, 2006. Gerri was known and loved by so many people in the city of Regina because of all of her work and efforts for all the povertystricken people in the city. Her legacy will live on and Flynn Regina should be proud to have played a small part.

Expansion & Renovation at Winnipeg Branch: The Winnipeg branch and Corporate Payroll staff will soon be moving into a newly renovated space at 1390 Spruce Avenue. The existing building (18,500 sq ft) was
completely gutted and is currently under a total envelope/interior renovation. The addition (7300 sq ft) hasn’t yet been built and is primarily shop space. The Payroll Department is moving into the building upon completion— scheduled for late fall.

Major Re-Roof for Winnipeg Branch This large 101,000 plus sq ft reroof system at the S.I.R. Warehouse in Winnipeg was a combination of both membrane and total re-roof replacement. Our Roofing Crews Flynn Lands the Receive High Praise Prestigious Art Gallery of Ontario From Our Customers Expansion Contract A classic Frank Gehry design! One of the world’s most profound architects is putting his stamp on Toronto. Frank Gehry, who has designed such world-renown structures as the Gugenhein Museum in Bilboa, Spain and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California is the design architect for the new Art Gallery of Ontario expansion. Mr. Gehry was born in Toronto but made his mark after opening his practice in California in 1962. The AGO project has all the classic shapes of a Gehry-designed facility. The project will boast a new titanium and glassclad three-story south elevation overlooking Grange Park, and will house a new Centre for Contemporary Art and a hosting centre for special events. A glass-enclosed sculpture gallery runs 425 feet along the Dundas Street façade. Flynn Canada Ltd. will supply and install more than 160,000 square feet of roof and floor deck, 23,000 square feet of insulated hidden fastener cladding complete with vapour barrier, 8,700 square feet of insulated stainless steel, standing seam roof with stainless gutters, and 36,000 plus square feet of special “pickled” blue titanium wall panels and soffits. Another 7,500 square feet of custom “bayonet-style” interlocking stainless steel wall and soffit cladding round out Flynn’s scope. Ellis-Don Ltd. is the general contractor for the project, scheduled for completion in 2008.
All too often we hear only about the bad things that happen on a job site, and not enough of the good. Well, we thought it was high time that we report about some of the praise our crews get for their performance. Our London branch crew recently received a well-deserved compliment for their work on Crestview Public School in Kitchener, ON, from Greg Jespersen, the Vice-Principal: “A big ‘Thank You’ both to you and the crew for all your work. The guys were professional, cooperative and considerate of our circumstances at all times. Please pass on our appreciation to all involved.“ The Flynn crew who worked on this project included Rui Medeiros (Foreman), Ken Williams, Durval Cuhna, Sergio, Martinez, Eduardo Medeiros, and Gord Dennis. Our contract included 12,500 square feet of re-roof for the Waterloo Region District School Board facility under the direction of Dan Winarski, Roof Consultant from Roof Management Consultants. What made this project unique was the very strict time restraints and special conditions which prevented us from working during recess or lunch hours—since the school was operational at the time. Marcel Perri, Toronto Branch Manager also received an email full of praise for our crews. Gord Humphry, a teacher at Port Perry High School (the site of a recent Flynn job), wrote: “I am a teacher at Port Perry High School, in Port Perry Ontario. This past summer and
fall your company put a new roof on 80% of our school building. I just happen to have an office that overlooks a good part of that roof and I’m writing to you to congratulate your workmen on the job they did. Each day I had the privilege of watching a dedicated work crew. Whether they were laying the roofing, cleaning up, or putting up the flashing they were always good natured, talking with each other and always working. What impressed me most was the slow steady approach which they took. It reminded me of the old Aesops fable about the tortoise and the hare. At any rate, we have now gone through a winter and a spring melt and it is remarkable how quickly the roof drains of water, and how sharp it looks from below, and from above.” Well done, crews!
Awards for Flynn: The Canadian War Museum
This high-profile Ottawa project was among the winners of the Globe Awards for Environmental Excellence, announced in Vancouver on April 3rd. The structure won the award for Excellence in Urban Sustainability. The award recognized the museum’s commitment to green design in features such as the green roof, recycled materials, extensive use of daylight in corridors, energy efficiency, and building systems. In addition, Flynn Canada Ltd. will be presented with the 2006 Roofing Canada Award for the nation’s Best Green Roof. Congratulations again to all involved!

Toronto Branch Lands Contract for Distinctive Downtown Project The Metropolis Entertainment Centre After months of addenda, pricing, re-pricing, and lengthy negotiations, Flynn Canada received the contract from PCL for a new 10-storey Metropolis Entertainment Centre in downtown Toronto (below). Metropolis is a world-class project located on the dynamic northeast corner of Yonge and Dundas Street, the virtual heart of Toronto’s retail, financial, and entertainment district. Designed as a 360,000 square foot Urban Lifestyle Entertainment Centre, Metropolis provides an energetic one-ofa-kind environment to flagship attractions, retailers and restaurants alike. In addition, there will be 24 AMC movie theatres totaling 146,000 square feet. The facility is scheduled to open in the spring of 2007 and
will no doubt be another feather in Flynn’s cap in downtown Toronto. Our contract involves the supply and installation of more than 112,000 square feet of both vertically and horizontally applied insulated wall cladding in two different profiles. We’ll also supply and install some 2,600 square feet of insulated sloped metal roofing. In addition, we’ll fabricate and install more than 13,000 square feet of AxiomPlus aluminum platewall—approximately 700 panels—on various accent areas and column covers.

Safety to the public and patients was of the utmost importance, especially at this high-profile medical institution. The crew installed more than 85,000 square feet of re-roof using three different roof systems; including a 4-ply asphalt & gravel, a 2-ply modified bitumen, and ballasted EPDM.

Competition has simply taught them how to be better than anyone else. Case in point, they successfully obtained and completed a re-roof project at Dunnville Secondary School recently. The utmost of care, attention to detail, and safety were paramount; since this project was undertaken while students were attending classes. Hampton Inn & Suites recently chose Flynn to supply and install a 2-ply Soprema modified bitumen roof system on their facility in Guelph, ON. Our roof contract included concrete priming, a torch modified base sheet as the vapor retarder, mopped with hot asphalt, with 3” polyiso, and tapered polyiso insulation, covered with a 1/8” Sopraboard, and an elastophene base sheet. Flashings were installed on the parapets with sopraflash flamstick with a torched cap sheet and metal flashings.

Maritimes Four Disciplines, One Project: Halifax’s St. Mary’s University, Applied Sciences Building This multi-disciplined project will be a welcome addition to the St. Mary’s University complex. The contract for this new facility, which will see all new and existing staff and student facilities under one roof, includes four scope disciplines. Flynn’s work will include the supply and installation of more than 27,000 square feet of Accumet 2000 architectural composite panels in two colours. Approximately 1040 panels will be installed on horizontal placed structural hat channel supports, and over spray foam insulation and vapour retarder. In addition, over 10,000 square feet of insulated corrugated cladding in a custom colour in a similar built-up system design, as well as corrugated cladding fastened on top of a Speedwall substrate. The original tender called for a sandwich panel with spray foam insulation and a separate vapour retarder in the penthouse locations as well, but
the Halifax Branch suggested the use of Speedwall to improve the project schedule. Speedwall was a “no-brainer” because of the product’s prime advantages: speed and efficiency. The use of Speedwall meant that we were able to close in the structures faster with an insulated, water-proof system, therefore facilitating earlier placement of the mechanical equipment. Steve Pass, acted as Project Manager with Greg Nickerson providing Foreman duties for the Metals Department. In addition to the architectural metal panels, Flynn was also awarded the roofing contract for the project. 8,500 square feet of new Tremco roofing system was laid over the metal deck. This was an extremely difficult site to navigate since the facility was operational and the students were in close proximity to the work site. The Production Department had to be aware of the hazards that existed at all times. In addition, multiple patching of relocated fans, fume hoods and vents made this the perfect service solution for the Roofing Production Department. The relocation of these units was done one by one, and since little production work was required, the Halifax Service crew came to the aid of the Production Department. Thanks Guys! Darren Smith, Production Superintendent and Fabian Brady, Foreman Roofing Department, along with most of the Service Technicians worked on the project at one time or another. Paula Webber, Service Manager and Gerry MacCormack oversaw the work. Aecon Atlantic acted as Construction Manager for the project.
Yet Another Branch Expansion Will it never end? We hope not! Flynn’s Moncton branch was the latest branch to expand/renovate. They recently completed the renovation of their facility— including the addition of three new offices. The work was completed by the branch’s Service Department, and yet they were still able to maintain their high level of service for their customers. A great many nights and weekends were worked so that the existing branch operations could remain functional during the entire process. The Service Department’s efforts and commitment to completing this work is to be commended. Great job, guys.
Holland College Expansion
This past winter, Flynn Moncton successfully completed a 16,400 square foot roofing contract for Holland College. Our scope included a peel and stick vapour barrier over a steel deck, EPS insulation, and an express board—mechanically fastened with a fully welded cap sheet. Roger Leblanc (Saguin), Foreman for the project, maintained both project schedule and budget on the job. Thanks go out to our hardworking crew on this project.
