President’s Message

‘A Tribute to Don Belton’

Many of you out there are well acquainted with our current Prairie Region Vice President, Mr. Don Belton. Don is essentially a ‘Day 1’ guy, and has left his mark on virtually every area of the company as we have grown over the years. In 1978, my father started Flynn and Associates Ltd. which had a humble office on the corner of Dublin Avenue and Border Street in Winnipeg with less than ten employees. Today, we have offices in sixteen cities across Canada, are performing work in the U.S. and have in excess of two-thousand employees. Don Belton has been there every step of the way, donating his blood, sweat, and tears to whatever required doing—no questions asked. You will read in this issue of Flynn Flash about some restructuring we are about to embark on in our newly formed 'Midwest Region which is comprised of all operations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. There are a number of reasons for this restructuring, not the least of which is Don’s wish to step back a bit from the front line action of the company. Although Don’s current title seems to suggest his duties are contained to the ‘Prairie Region’—many of us know better. For example, Don has committed to oversee the Vancouver Convention Center project, our single largest contract in the history of the company. He is also busy overseeing the construction of our new facilities in Saskatoon and Edmonton. These are all tall tasks and they require a ton of travel and Don is looking after them in addition to his regular duties. A couple of months back, Don informed me that he felt it was the right time for him to slow down a bit. He told me he would like to be in the position to “decline” some of these types of tasks in the future, and to step down as Regional Vice President, in order to spend more time with his family. Note: It must be pointed out that he quickly followed that up with, “not that I would say no, but I would like to be able to say no”—which just typifies Don Belton. It also needs to be pointed out that Don has never said no to the best of my knowledge. When asked to perform a special function which may have been over and above the call of duty, there was never any hesitation. And believe me, there have been many special functions! Don has always had a selfless, company-first attitude. He has certainly earned the right to say no. We have relied on Don and his abilities countless times, and he has gotten us out of more trouble than I care to think back about. Don has a very understanding and supportive wife Pauline, as well as three very fine and bright adult children, Cindy, Jason and Clayton. There are also five grandchildren who enjoy and love their “gramps”. To Pauline and the rest of the family, I hope you all understand that it is certain that our company would not be where it is today, had it not been for Don’s commitment and leadership over the years. We all thank you for your support of Don over the years as well. We are all indebted to Don; he has been a mentor for many and a sounding board, voice of reason, and a sort of second father for me personally. Many of us have learned numerous lessons from Don; some business lessons and even some life lessons along the way. For that we are all grateful. It is also important to understand two other things: 1) Don will hate reading this, just not his style… too ‘touchy feely’! (But too bad Don.) And 2) Don is NOT retiring; he is just planning to transition from quarterback to coach. Don will be around for a long time yet, he will continue to coach many of those around him. Don’s humility would no doubt get in the way of any big splash of recognition, but I would be remiss to not tribute Don Belton for all the things he has brought to the company over the years. Corporate News Flynn Canada Acquires AGS Contract Glazing Ltd. of Toronto Major strategic move In the last issue of the Flash, we announced Flynn Canada’s intention to enter the contract glazing and curtain wall business. We introduced John Silva, Business Development Manager, who with years of curtain wall experience was working with Art Bundschuh to plan and prepare for this major move. Well, the last piece of the puzzle is now complete. On September 12, 2006 Doug Flynn, President of Flynn Canada Ltd., issued this news release: “Flynn Canada Ltd. and AGS Contract Glazing Ltd. have reached an agreement that will see Flynn purchase the assets of AGS, assume certain outstanding contracts and enter into the Glazing Business. This opportunity will allow Flynn to enter the contract glazing business with the financial resources to make a strong statement to the construction industry. We are offering a single point of accountability for exterior building envelopes that does not exist in today’s market.” Flynn Canada Ltd. and AGS Contract Glazing Ltd. were first introduced to each other back in 2000, when Andy Jackson (right), past President of AGS, contacted an old associate of his at Flynn. He was curious to see if Flynn was interested in working together with AGS on the first exterior architectural tender at the new terminal development at Pearson Airport in Toronto (top). That joint tender

was successful and since that time Flynn and AGS have worked together on a number of proposals, tenders, and projects; including the cover shot of the Flash—the Metropolis Complex in downtown Toronto. Both companies had common interests in expanding and diversifying. Flynn is not only the largest architectural panel fabricator and installer in Canada but also the largest roofing and metal building product subcontractor. With years of experience in virtually every type of complex product application, the incorporation of other products within the scope of the “building envelope” was a natural progression for Flynn. It therefore made perfect sense for Flynn to add glass and glazing to complete the envelope. AGS, on the other hand, were also looking for ways to grow their business. With Flynn’s sixteen branches across Canada, 2000-plus employees, excellent bonding strength, and financial stability; Flynn Canada was their answer. We are pleased that Andy Jackson will remain with the company in a consulting position throughout this transition period and beyond.

We are also pleased to retain the services of Bud Todish (left) to help us facilitate a smooth changeover. Russ Jackson (right) will be assuming a senior management position within the Flynn organization to add leadership and strong customer relationships for the long-term. Flynn is pleased to welcome the current employees of AGS, as this agreement ensured continued employment for all employees as well as growth opportunities that are destined to present themselves on a national scale. The agreement truly brings with it a team that is already up and running. Although entry and growth will be methodically managed, watch for BIG things to happen down the road.

Recent Announcements Initiate Major Restructuring The Board of Directors of Flynn Canada Ltd. recently announced several strategic initiatives to address three situations which had become a priority. The Board sees these initiatives as positive changes within Flynn’s upper management core. They feel that these moves put Flynn in the very best position to experience continued growth, and more importantly, to achieve the company’s goal of reaching yet another level of efficiency, in all regions.

Contract Glazing The first situation to be addressed was the entry of Flynn Canada into the contract glazing business. The Board agreed that in each and every one of Flynn's geographic regions there are great opportunties in glazing. As Doug Flynn stated: “The acquisition of AGS Contract Glazing of Toronto is only the first step in the company’s ultimate long-term plan to become proficient with this trade in all regions. AGS is a springboard and the first piece of the puzzle to achieving that long-term goal of becoming a national glazing contracting company.”

Don Belton Secondly, Don Belton has announced his intention to step down as Regional Vice President, Prairie Region, effective February 28, 2007, the end of Flynn’s fiscal year. Don is not by any means retiring from the company, but simply wishes to takes on a role that has less day-to-day and travel demands so that he can have more quality time with his grandchildren and family. Don will continue to be an important part of the company for many years to come.

Flynn Industrial And thirdly, the company has had a great deal of success building an 'Industrial' division, Flynn Industrial Ltd. Led by Fred Thom, (below) the company became operational only four short years ago. As featured in previous Flash articles, Flynn Industrial focuses mainly on the mega oil sands projects and related support industries in Alberta. Flynn is convinced that factors such as the large market, and our prominent position within that market relative our major competitors, will guide us to be the leading trade contractor for our scope of work in the very near future. The key, of course, is to properly position the company to take full advantage of the huge opportunities that will exist over the next ten years and beyond. In consideration of these three situations, as well as the company’s longterm interests, the Board of Directors have announced the following changes that will uniquely position our company to take advantage of the many opportunities that exist.

Midwest Region Effective March 1, 2007, Flynn will create a new region within the company. This region will be referred to as the 'Midwest Region' and will be comprised of all five operations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Also effective on that day, Art Bundschuh (below) will assume the role of Regional Vice President, Midwest Region, with overall responsibility for operations in the three provinces, including Flynn Industrial, and will be joining the company’s Board of Directors on a permanent basis.

In order to facilitate a period of transition in Ontario, Art will stay in Ontario for now, relocating back to Edmonton in either March or July of 2007. The Board is confident that Art has the communication, HR, and leadership skills to be a 'communication conduit' between those five offices. In addition, Art is well equipped to guide the introduction of glazing into the Midwest Region, assist Fred Thom with the major growth available to us in the Industrial sector, and create a more coordinated effort in the region with our Metal divisions. Flynn Canada has very capable managers in our roofing and service divisions in the Midwest, so Art’s job will be mainly ‘communications’ related to those areas.

Alberta Roofing & Service Derin Franzen (below) remains as Vice President and will continue to sit on the Board—overseeing all roofing and service in Alberta. As Doug Flynn stated: “These areas remain a cornerstone within the company. Flynn has experienced a high level of success, but there is still a major task ahead with reaching our potential; both in terms of more offices and a higher level of efficiency within our current offices. Derin will now be well positioned to focus on these areas.” In Ontario, restructuring will be necessary to fill the void that will be left by Art’s departure. Some evolution in duties of certain current senior personnel will occur over the next year or so, as management merges with the former AGS staff. Announcements will be made on any subsequent management decisions or changes just as soon as they happen.

Corporate Appointments Add Strength ‘Down the Middle’ In other corporate news, the Board of Directors met in August and, among other issues, discussed the company’s need to expand and further develop the service side of our business right across the country. Even with the successes achieved by the various branch service departments, there is substantially more opportunity available. The obstacle to growth is almost always the communication of ideas and practices. In order to resolve this, the Board created a new position within the company to coordinate, communicate, share, and teach ‘best practices’ to and from each of our now sixteen branches. The Board was pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Nunes (above) to the newly created position of National Service Manager. Paul has been with our company for more than twenty years, most recently holding the position of Toronto Service Supervisor, and is well qualified for the position. Congratulations Paul!

Flynn Expands Onto ‘The Rock’!

Flynn Canada has added its 16th branch office. The St. John’s, Newfoundland branch will be managed by Enos Thomas, who joins Flynn with many years of roofing and construction experience. Enos will be working closely with the existing management in our other maritime branches of Moncton and Halifax to maintain effective coverage and the highest degree of safety and customer satisfaction. We all welcome Enos and wish him the best of luck!

Waiting Period for Benefits Reduced We are very pleased to announce that effective October 1st, 2006, the benefits waiting period for all field staff has been shortened from the current one year waiting period to six months. Therefore any field staff who joined Flynn as of April 1st, 2006, and have maintained continuous employment since their hire date, will receive benefits enrollment forms for completion. These employees will then be enrolled onto Flynn’s benefits plan effective October 1st, 2006. Any employee who started after April 1st, 2006, will then be eligible to receive benefits, effective their six month anniversary date. National Accounts & Branches Team Up for Re-Branding Business SNC-Lavalin ProFac is a major international design and construction group with a vast portfolio that continues to grow. Currently, SNC’s portfolio consists of Canada Post Corporation, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Public Works, Air Canada, Purolator and Nexcor, to name a few.

National Accounts Manager Jean LeBeau has been busy developing relationships with a number of key Ontario Vice Presidents at SNC-Lavalin ProFac over the past few years. Considering the opportunities that exist through SNC, Chris Doucette, National Accounts Business Development, has joined up with Jean to further develop relationships with most of their key decision-makers, right across the country. SNC-Lavalin ProFac has become a valued national account for service work and tendered projects. As an example, in April, 2006, Canada Post Corporation chose SNC-Lavalin ProFac to handle their portfolio in Ontario and Atlantic. Most recently, SNCLavalin has taken over CPC’s business in Western Canada and the Territories as well. The Vancouver branch played a vital part in securing the first project awarded in Western Canada and National Accounts would like to thank them for all of their efforts.

T.A.S.K. Submissions

(Teamwork Attitude Sharing Knowledge) Jeff Aviss, Ottawa Branch Manager, submitted the winning TASK submission for this issue of the Flash. Minimizing Risk While Torching was a submission intended to help with controlling the use of torches. This is a ‘hot’ topic these days, and in response the Ottawa branch has created one crew comprised of trained torch applicators, whose sole purpose will be torch applications of both field cap sheets and perimeter flashings. All other crews will be handing in their torches. The newly formed crew will have additional training from the Risk Management team, specifically about all hazards associated with torching. They will have full authority to dismantle and reconstruct any detail on site that they feel represents a torching risk to us and build it appropriately. By doing this, we know exactly when and where the torches are being used. We encourage all branches to implement a similar model. Jeff will be receiving $200 for his submission along with our thanks! We would also like to recognize and thank Douglas Wells of the Vancouver branch for his submission on Coltack Roof Applicators, Toby Unruh of Corporate regarding desktop backgrounds, and Mike Rodrigues of Hamilton Service for his suggestion on using an insulation ‘fork on wheels’. British Columbia Sunset on Saltspring Installing a standing seam metal roof on a residence on Saltspring Island is not an

unusual occurrence for our Gulf Islands crew. However, when the property owner mentioned that 212 Sunset was located in between 208 and 210 Sunset, the branch knew that this would be a special job! Upon completion of this project, owner Gloria Dorworth wrote a wonderful letter congratulating our crew on their success. Gloria writes to Project Manager Fred Cliff: “We found your team of Glenn Bissett and Sean Williams to be efficient and courteous. They both provided us with extra assistance with things such as skylight cleaning, which we appreciated. Their good humour made the noise on the roof more than bearable. Thank you all very much. We are very pleased with our new roof.” Thanks to our Gulf Island team for representing our company in such a professional manner! (I love printing this stuff!)

Work Continues on the University of BC’s Winter Sports Complex Flynn Canada has begun phases of construction on the new UBC Winter Sports Complex with Bird Construction. We successfully acquired contracts for various scopes of work, including metal decking, TPO roofing, SBS roofing, and metal roofing. This multi-phased construction project will facilitate multiple arenas for university, Olympic and local venues.

To date, decking on Phase 1 for Arena C has been completed as well as TPO roofing. When the second phase was ready, we immediately undertook the placement of the deck, soon followed by the SBS roofing. As always, the UBC site has many challenges, from worker parking limitations to site space availability. These issues continue to plague general contractors and sub-contractors alike as they try to maintain schedules. Our relationship with contractor Bird Construction has proven to be a beneficial one to both firms, as the site is currently 4 months ahead of schedule.

Logistical Nightmare at Aberdeen Residence Job Near Vancouver Airport In 2004, the Flash featured Flynn’s involvement in the construction of the Aberdeen Mall, a state-of-the-art architectural design, located in the heart of Richmond, BC. Flynn was also recently chosen to work on another project in Richmond—a 10-storey residence, chosen by architects to be a ‘sister’ design to the mall. As on the mall project, Dominion Fairmile Construction was the general contractor. Because the 10-storey residence is so close to the airport flight paths (Richmond is home to the Vancouver Airport), obstacles related to hoisting to and unloading from the main roof area had to be overcome. DFC had a ‘hammerhead’ crane in place but it fell some 3' short of being able to hoist to roof level. The YVR Airport Authorities restricted maximum crane lifting heights, so few options were available. With excellent assistance from DFC, load times via a mobile crane were arranged with the YVR Tower’s approval to everyone’s satisfaction.

This wasn’t the only big challenge that Rob Wentland and his crew had to face. Areas with difficult access, canopy roofs and extended overhangs, in-place glazing which eliminated our ability to utilize or even install guardrails, all had to be safely and effectively managed. Our crews, however, took the initiative to install and test a horizontal lifeline system purchased through Hazmasters Ltd. The device allows crews a much faster production rate, but more importantly it allows them to perform the complex work safely. To their credit, our dedicated crew maintained a positive attitude throughout their many ordeals and successfully completed the work. Well done, guys!

Flynn Completes Two More Auto Dealerships Mega auto dealer the Jim Pattison Auto Group, along with Titan Construction of Vancouver, recently contracted with Flynn Canada to supply and install composite architectural panel systems on two car dealership buildings in Surrey, BC. The Hyundai and Volvo dealerships respectively represent 8,276 square feet of Accumet 1000 and 2000 system panels. The new Hyundai facility (below) was completed by the Vancouver Metals team of Project Manager Troy Johnston, Field Superintendent Ray Bruce and the field crew of Foreman Atilla Boros, Barry Hoyano, Rodney Fudge, Uwe Krieger, Soerjong “Ryan” Jang and Sungok “Justin” Jang. Both builder and client have nothing but good things to say about the quality of the installation and the professionalism of the Flynn crews. A wet coast, way to go guys!

Flynn Stars at Starlight Flynn Canada Ltd. was recently awarded a multi-discipline contract with PCL at the Starlight Casino Project in Vancouver. The scope of work includes more than 180,000 square feet of metal deck, some 130,000 square feet of TPO and SBS roofing systems, 22,000 square feet of generic wall cladding and in excess of 10,000 square feet of Accumet 2000 architectural panels. Flynn’s work encompasses the majority of the building envelope package for the project. Based on our proven reputation for quality and performance in the construction industry, both PCL Project Management and the owners of the casino chose us as the one company who could take on and be responsible for the complete package. Furthermore, Flynn Canada’s position was further enhanced by the fact that Flynn is also the leader in promoting safety innovation within the construction industry. Pictured above, Flynn materials are hoisted with the use of PCL’s site crane and Flynn Canada’s LEDGE System (Leading Edge Deck Gangway Erection) for loading metal deck onto the work area. This system allows for a platform to be built for our workers, minimizing fall exposure over open structures. The metal decking crews using this innovative deck hoisting system make quick work of large metal deck installations. PCL recognized the benefits of this innovative safety device and assisted in promoting a ‘safety first’ approach. Foreman Nigel Cochrane, John Apolzer, Brian Zahorejko, Brandon Tessier, Matt Hillman, Glen Kruger and Karl Lambrecht led the Flynn decking crew who utilized the system. Congratulations guys for being on the leading edge of construction safety.

The one that DIDN’T get away Several field and office employees recently won a special day of sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River, guided by Ken Smith, General Manager of the Vancouver branch Metal Department. And Ken did not disappoint… check out the monster sturgeon caught by Monty Heinrichs! It was 94” long (that’s almost 8 feet!) which makes it roughly an 80-year-old fish. It weighed between 250 and 275 pounds! Those who witnessed this battle of wills, included (L–R): Branch Manager Leo Davidson, Dale Nehanee (Flashings) Jay Fioramante (Roofing Supervisor), Coral Bilkoski (Accounts Receivable), Kelly Brown (Metals Foreman), Monty Heinrichs (Metals Foreman), Catherine Dajani (Estimating), Ken Smith (fishing guide extraordinaire).

Cladding Complete Day of Fun for the on UNO Tower Vancouver Branch Intracorp Projects Ltd. contracted with us to install the exterior envelope rain screen cladding system for the UNO Residential Tower & Town Home Complex in Vancouver, BC. The contract was scheduled over a sixmonth period. The UNO Residential project is now open for tenants with the completion of the last phase of Town Homes (below). The corrugated cladding and through-wall flashing systems installed on the exterior will serve to protect the building and tenants from the wet BC environment for years to come.

The Vancouver branch social committee (they have a social committee?) organized a superior event this past summer—a baseball and family barbeque day. Several ball teams were put together from the office and field staff. Victoria Exemplifies Flynn’s Diversity The Dominion Hotel is a heritage building located in the heart of downtown Victoria. After recently changing hands, the re-roofing project was put out to tender. Normally a job of this size would be a production job. However, the hotel consists of a series of challenging small roofs that needed to be re-roofed in a staggered fashion so that disturbance to hotel guests would be minimized. Consequently, Service Foreman Herb Smith and his team of Nick Wilson, Jeff Thul, and Doug Jackson took on the challenge! With the assistance of various production staff, our team did a fabulous job on this project. The hotel’s new owner was very impressed and stated that Flynn Canada would be consulted for any future roofing work that arises on this or any other property under his care. Congratulations Victoria!

Employee News As a side story, someone (who remains nameless, and is pictured above with Regional VP Len Edmondson) lost a bet with a few of his (or her) fellow Flynn softball teammates. As a result, he or she (still a mystery) was committed to wearing a chicken suit in public. A great time was had by all. (So, who was it? Was that you, Pete?)

Alberta Calgary and Edmonton Westin Hotels New national account? A major re-branding program by the Westin Hotel chain has opened up an opportunity for Flynn Canada, as the Calgary branch successful negotiated two architectural panel retrofit contracts recently for the prestigious hotel chain. More on this story next Flash!

National Branding Program Reaches Edmonton

In the summer issue of the Flash, we wrote about the national branding program Flynn was working on with ScotiaBank. Well, we are pleased to report that the program is now definitely ‘national’ in scope. Edmonton Metals Manager Bill Rennich was assisted by Toronto Program Coordinator Tara Adalaya in obtaining and completing the first such ScotiaBank branding project in Alberta (right), in Ellerslie; the southern most suburb of Edmonton. With prime contractor Norson Construction Ltd. from Kelowna, BC, our scope included two towers consisting of membrane, subgirts, and exterior panels. The modified Accumet 2000 composite panel system in Boa Red with small panel modules is a cost effective and clean design. Nice job!

Calgary Decking Crews ‘Flying’ from Project to Project As another Superstore commercial complex was recently completed by our metal decking crews in Calgary, the city was literally expanding around them—keeping our Calgary crews running at full speed.

Our crew of (above, L–R): Ray Blahey, Darren Hughes, Gary Preston, Darryl Ridgeway and Foreman Cliff McIntyre, recently completed a supply and install contract for a Superstore commercial development for developer Tiki International Inc. Located in the everexpanding Northwest quadrant of the city is the main Superstore grocery store as well as liquor store and gas bar. The contract saw our men install almost 200,000 square feet of metal roof deck, as well as another 22,000 square feet of floor deck on these buildings. At the same time, another crew was finishing up Building A of the new Shephard Industrial Park complex in southeast Calgary for Cana

Management Ltd. The contract for Building A included not only the metal roof and floor deck, but our Metal Division crews, consisting of (above, L–R) Tyler Grabowski, Richard White (Foreman), Ted Ponting (Foreman), and Danny Tangent, were also contracted to supply, fabricate, and install Accumet 2000 architectural composite panels. And… we are also in the midst of another major project with Cana at the Calgary Courts high-rise tower project in downtown Calgary. (Story to follow in the next Flash.)

Calgary Branch Enjoys Some R&R Calgary branch held it’s 2nd Annual Foremen’s Golf Tournament in late September at the Lakeside Golf Club in Chestermere, just east of Calgary. Forty-four golfers teed it up, with a mix of Foremen and office staff in each group. Everyone enjoyed a fun day on the course, especially considering all of the recent work-related challenges that go along with the hustle and bustle of a booming Alberta economy. Calgary Branch Holds 1st Annual Bike Ride

Prairies Bridge Brand Foods Teachers Credit Union Place A Winnipeg branch crew is pictured below hoisting and placing steel roof deck on the new Bridge Brand Foods facility in Winnipeg.

—Saskatoon, Saskatchewan The Teachers Credit Union Place project in downtown Saskatoon is a striking example of an architectural panel application and design simplicity. The 5,100 square foot Accumet 1000 panel project consisted of the air barrier, 3” Z–bars and cavity-mate insulation. Contractor for the project was the Wolfe Group of Companies.

Crews recently completed the 93,000 sq ft building by supplying and installing the roof deck and EPDM Roofing along with more than 2,000 sq ft of metal roofing. Griffin Canada Ltd

Griffen was the site of yet another successful re-roof project by the Winnipeg branch.

The work included more than 60,000 sq ft of 2-ply modified bitumen membrane roofing. Major re-roof for government tower Downtown Regina was the scene of a major reroof project for Flynn crews recently. This large and somewhat complex undertaking required a difficult set-up, as access to the Government of Canada High Rise Tower was limited. More than 37,000 square feet of total roof replacement, consisting of both EPDM and SBS applications was required to complete the contract. Our Flynn roofing crew was made up of (left, L–R): Luke Campeau, Harley Tawpisin, Rainey Oakes, Albert Belhemeure, Brendan Lowndes (Foreman), Dustin Wandler, and James Donnelly.

Roofing Foreman Brendan Lowndes won the big jackpot for guessing the right number for 'Most Golf Balls Lost' (eighty-nine). Brendan should also have won for the oldest set of golf clubs used! His ancestors would have been proud (you had to see them). Other big winners were Dave Denis and Ryan Cameron, who each won a pair of tickets to the Rolling Stones concert on the Thanksgiving Day long weekend, and Stewart Gordon, who won a pair of tickets to a Saskatchewan Roughriders football game. Ontario Facelift for the House that MacDonald Built Rideau Hall (shown below) has served as the home and workplace of every Governor General since Confederation in 1867. An icon in Canadian politics, the building hosts the swearing in ceremonies of Prime Ministers, welcomes world leaders, and honours Canadians for their greatness. In order to maintain the long-term preservation of this unique and important historical site, Flynn Canada obtained the contract from general contractor PCL to completely rehabilitate the architectural featured front façade and copper roofing over the Ballroom, Mappin Wing, and Tentroom. This work required the removal and installation of all copper & lead coated copper on the roofing, facades, cornices, frieze section, windows and decorative downspouts. The Flynn team who made it happen were Archie Yokota, Project Manager, Stephane Lalonde (Superintendent), Daniel Gelineau (Site Foreman), Ken Schneider, Ferrell Schneider, Patrick Murtagh, Conor Donnelly and Denis Leblanc (Shop Foreman).

Oshawa's Legends Centre This new high-tech recreational facility was an award winner for structural design, combining complex product applications and shapes with traditionally installed metal products. This project was recently completed after Flynn took on the contract as a result of the closure of VicWest’s install business in Ontario (reported in the Fall 2004 edition of the Flash).

The building design incorporates a curved zinc standing seam roof as well as a unique install of the same roofing profile in a wall application on the end walls—horizontally, as shown above. Our Accumet 2000 architectural composite wall panel system was used extensively in the wall façade design as well as an extensive use of insulated metal cladding in various colours. John Duff was the Project Manager.

Ottawa’s Metal Dep't Growing The University of Ottawa has begun construction of a new multi-disciplinary building, designed to be home to the central administration of the Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Management, and most notably, the new School of Political Sciences. Flynn was chosen by Pomerleau Construction to install some 15,000 sq ft of AxiomPlus architectural plate wall and more than 16,000 sq ft of metal siding on the new twelve-storey, $76.2 million dollar facility. Our site team completing the work is Foreman Jacques Deslauriers, Gerry Mazzeroule, Eric LePlante, Hugh O’Donnell and Bryan Jones.

Toronto Island Ferry Terminal

Over the past few years, there has been a lot of controversy over Toronto Island. Develop it, don’t develop it. Expand the Island Airport, shut it down. But notwithstanding the controversy, the island airport remains operational. Many were eager to utilize a new commercial airline which commences service from downtown Toronto. However, in order to accommodate those passengers, a brand new ferry terminal was built to access the service from the mainland. Flynn Canada Ltd. was chosen as the preferred contractor to supply and install the insulated metal cladding. John Duff was again the Project Manager.

Eliminating Risk How one branch took action on the 'President’s Message' Doug Flynn recently implemented measures to reduce and eliminate the risks prevalent with torch applied products and applications. While everyone agrees with the importance of risk management and fire prevention, there are still skeptics who think that there are few replacement methods available. Well, one office in particular was keen to jump on the ‘torch-free’ bandwagon. Our Hamilton branch immediately switched over to cold applied products and was very successful. Niagara Service installed five large curbs for Holy Cross School in St. Catherine’s, ON, which was undergoing a steam conversion at the time. In light of the recent decision which has removed torches from our service trucks, the crew decided to utilize a peel and stick application while installing the large 18'-long by 9'-wide curbs, two sets of sleepers, and small exhaust curbs to accommodate the steam conversion. The existing roof was a modified bituminous roof on wooden deck.

Ottawa's Museum of Nature Goes ‘Green’ Our Ottawa branch has landed yet another museum project, and to top if off—another green roof. The project, Canada’s first national museum and the oldest museum in existence in Canada, includes more than 10,000 square feet of new green roof, 24,000 square feet of conventional roof replacement, and 20,000 square feet of podium waterproofing over a new addition on the existing 95-year-old museum. In addition, Flynn will supply and install more than 11,000 square feet of metal roof, 18,000 square feet of metal siding and 1,000 sq ft of architectural panel.

Our Niagara Service personnel met with Soprema’s technical representatives to review cold applied roofing and go over any questions or concerns. Soprema was very helpful in assisting our own Stephen Patti, Hamilton branch Service Superintendent, in successfully revising the specification to incorporate the The building is listed as one of the most important heritage buildings owned by the Canadian Government.

Soprema peel and stick “Colphene” modified membrane. The aesthetic quality and durability that it provides was all that our customer needed to hear to accept the product and its application. And the pictures speak for themselves when it comes to quality.

Univerity of Toronto Kitchener Branch Finishes Major Opens Hazel Re-Roof Projects McCallion Centre

Santo Garcia’s crew (below) recently completed a 160,000 square foot re-roof project for the school board. Perry Wheaton and his crew (middle) finished up a 25,000 square footer on a Region of Waterloo, senior-housing complex.

Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion made her mark, in body and name, at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Academic Learning Centre in November at the University of Toronto, Mississauga Campus. The Centre, named after one of UTM’s most enthusiastic supporters, will emphasize “people space” with a cafe, large and small study rooms, and an adaptive technology centre for the disabled. We are very proud to have been part of the project. Designed by Shore Tilbe Irwin & Partners, our contract with Vanbots Construction included the supply and installation of Prodema specialty wood panels (as shown above and right). Dan Sims was Toronto's Project Manager on this outstanding job.

Mark, who has been with Flynn for the past two years, under the apprenticeship of his father, participated in the Canadian Council of Sheet Metal Workers & Roofers competition in Saskatchewan this past summer. '…my hair is going grey already!' The Canadian economy continues to be relatively strong in most areas of the country, though much of the focus has been on Western Canada, and in particular, Alberta. Granted the oil boom and the Olympics have spurred on growth in the three western most provinces, but Flynn has been very, very busy in many other areas of the country as well. Steve Pass, Halifax Project Manager—Metals, was recently quoted from an email, “No wonder my hair is going grey!” This sums up the past six months for Steve and the many others who have worked long hard hours to complete some of the nicest examples of product applications anywhere. A testament to Flynn and the employees who made it happen. Here’s a brief update on five metals projects in which we can all take pride:

Because it is a new office, there was no backlog of work. So to get working, many of Enos’ men agreed to assist other branches in the meantime. One group was deployed to Calgary and included (below-right, L–R): Jim Kearsey, Ed Brinson, Dean Mike St. Croix (Foreman), Frank Poole, Philip Mootrey and John Tobin.

Halifax Airport: Sleek and Modern Crews have just put the finishing touches on supplying, fabricating, and installing the composite panels for the new TransBorder Facility at the Halifax International Airport project. The photo below speaks for itself—showing the quality of workmanship, despite some very complex panels shapes. Site Supervisor Robert MacKinnon and his crew of (above, L–R): Darrin Mercer, Peter Westhaver, Andrew Brown and Mike Kenny, have done an excellent job of installing more than 1500 panels on the North End Expansion. Nice work!

Flynn Canada was selected to supply and install a multitude of products on this beauty located at St. Thomas University, in Fredericton, N.B. Included in our scope were areas of hidden fastener metal cladding, shingles, and standing seam metal roofing—all manufactured from pre-weathered zinc. In addition, Flynn supplied and installed 10mm Prodema BAQ wood panels featuring two contrasting colors as well as a number of fiberglass reinforced plastic panels and some seventy soffit panels, fabricated in a 4mm Accumet 2000

Sydney Health Park: ‘State-of-the-art’ A strikingly simple yet functional and aesthetically pleasing design would be one way to describe Sydney’s latest ‘state-of-theart’ medical facility. Flynn Canada was chosen for our expertise in complete building envelope applications. General contractor Jonel Jim Concrete utilized both our metals and roofing divisions to bring this Trifos Design Ltd. gem to life.

Wal-Mart: Six more stores this year! Little did we know two years ago that Flynn would be working on all of the new Wal-Mart stores in Eastern Canada.

More than 1800 insulated Accumet 2000 panels, both curved and flat, in a combination of medium bronze and silver metallic finishes made up the majority of the building’s exterior. In addition, thousands of square feet of Flynn Speedwall foam panels were installed on the pedway and penthouse walls. Foreman Alfie Clarke and his crew of Billy Carey and Clifford White did a great job installing the composite panels on the project, with assistance from John Fleming and Darrin Mercer, who helped out in the early phases of the project. Special thanks to Robert MacKinnon for his efforts with the field dimensions and panel sketches required to make it all fit. Gerard MacNeil and Harris Stubbert installed the foam panels, while Foreman Dave Boyd, Dean King, James Bird, Leo Gracie, Ray Vickers and John Hatfield installed more than 20,000 square feet of EPDM and TPO roofing. A great job guys… well done!

Our branches down-east will complete six more this year as they continue to keep our foam panel crews busy in the Maritimes. Foreman John Fleming and his crew of Jeff Holt and Jeff Doane are doing great job at installing the panels on Sussex, Dartmouth, Bedford and Fredericton. Foreman Gerard MacNeil, Harris Stubbert, Keith Boutlier and Jackie Stubbert completed the installations in Sydney and New Glasgow. Good work guys!

Canadian Tire Roger Savoie and his men recently completed more than 60,000 square feet of Deckmate insulation, loose laid and ballasted with an EPDM membrane on the new Canadian Tire retail outlet in Oromocto, N.B. Roger’s Fredericton crew consisted of (above, L–R): Graham Cole, Randy Taylor, Calvin Heath, Roger Savoie (Foreman), Jim Gillies, Paul Gillies, and Pat Boon.

Atlantic Veterinary College And crews from Moncton recently started a work on a new section of the Atlantic Veterinary College (pictured below) in P.E.I. for general contractor PCL. A Tremco roof system consisting of a fully adhered vapour barrier, insulation, fiberboard, base sheet and cap sheet will be installed as a modified bituminous roof—with no torch on site!
