PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “The Flynn Way” Critical to our Success Hello everyone, We have been growing at a terrific pace over the past couple of years, especially with our expansion into the U.S., but also with solid organic growth in Canada as well. It is because of this growth that I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about the importance of a healthy “culture” in our company. We refer to our culture as “The Flynn Way”, which can be summed up as: The behaviours behind the way we do things at Flynn. First of all, it has been my experience that when observing companies, if a great culture exists among the people, the company almost can’t fail. Conversely, with a lousy culture, it becomes awfully difficult for the company to be successful. This same principle can also apply to things like governments, sports teams, volunteer organizations or even families! Whenever a group of human beings get together to try to accomplish something, “culture” is an ingredient that will be directly related to their level of success. Now it is crystal clear to me as I travel across our company that we do indeed have a great culture. We could not have had the level of success we have enjoyed over the years without one. This might however, prompt you to think, if our culture is in such great shape then why would I bring it up for discussion? The answer is simple; since we are entering a period of such growth, or even as we add new people to our mature offices, if we don’t pay attention to maintaining, and even building on our great culture, it could be negatively affected and could become diluted. We MUST avoid that. As we grow and adapt to the ever evolving markets and business conditions, our competitive strategies have to change. “The Flynn Way” however is constant and will act as our guide post to do the right thing. It is time to bring “The Flynn Way” from the back of our minds, to the forefront of our thinking as we perform our duties every day. At the time of writing this, I am part way through visiting all of our offices for this year’s round of safety meetings. The subjects of “Safety” and “Culture” are really joined at the hip – I don’t think we can be great at one of these without being great at the other. They are kind of a package deal. In fact, our most important value is displayed in the reasons behind all of things we do when it comes to workplace health and safety. Safety is now, and will always be our # 1 priority. Nothing else matters all that much when you compare it to everyone going home safe each night to their families and loved ones. “The Flynn Way” is what sets us apart and has made us successful over the years. Over time, the way we value our customers and our people has proven to be a competitive advantage. Simply put, it is the secret weapon to earning loyalty and trust with each other. Things like honesty, integrity, trust, doing what we say, and caring for each other – and I mean REALLY CARING – are things that cannot be underestimated. If we get all of these things right, believe me, everything else will fall into place. “The Flynn Way” helps ensure we expect and reward great teamwork between each other. It is something that is front and centre at Flynn University and other learning and development programs – it just has to be! So, as we continue to grow, let’s not forget our roots or the values we share. With ”The Flynn Way” guiding our actions, the sky is the limit! DENVER Gillette Community College Submitted by: Megan McReynolds

The groundbreaking ceremony for Gillette College Education and Activity Center was held in June, however, the Architectural Team has been working hard in the months prior to bring this beautiful 52,000 sq. ft. facility to life on the Gillette College Campus in Wyoming. From left to right: Luis Cruz, Arcadio Diaz, Victor Moncada, Sergio Zamorano, This is not only an athletic and Joe Zamora, Isaiah Gabriel, Aaron Leal Madero, Adalberto Santos A. and Alejandro Aleman fitness venue, but will also feature a nursing simulation lab, flexible classrooms, and a center for student veterans. It’s expected to be completed in the fall. Flynn’s scope of work is the metal roofing and metal wall panels. Our team is proudly installing 16,435 sq. ft. of Firestone UC-14 metal wall panels, 7,284 sq. ft. of Firestone UC-6 metal roof panels, and a full dry in package.

University Sie International Relations Complex Submitted by: Ty Mattern

AMD Architects designed this International Relation Complex with a wide variety of architectural metal and roofing products. It’s quite the unique copper metal roofing project, tying the geometry of a cone into the straight lines of a gabel roof, then adding a 150 ft. spire above with bright blue ceramic tile. Flynn used MCA Oriental Tile, Alpolic 4mm PE composite, Copper Diamond wall shingles, copper louvers, and Carlisle White 90 mil EPDM. The craftsmanship is outstanding and the University loves it!

DENVER University Engineering Building Submitted by: Megan McReynolds

This large copper project for Denver University was comprised of 20,000 sq. ft. of metal. Flynn custom fabricated and installed over 4,000 Freedom Grey copper shingles for the dome, each of which were made in the shop. These form a spiral effect on the dome and include synthetic underlayment, high temperature ice and water shield, skylight flashings, and dome cap. The job also consisted of 2,000 sq. ft. of custom copper diamond wall shingles, flat seam panels and 12,200 sq. ft. of copper standing seam roof and dry in package. Details also include 20 ounce copper gutters, custom fascia, scuppers, waterheads, downspout, and cornice flashings.

PHOENIX Portland on the Park

Portland on the Park is a mixed-use 15-story high-rise in downtown Phoenix. Lorenzo Falco and architectural sheet metal crew installed 35,000 sq. ft. of a RMP MS200 single-skin mechanically seamed standing seam wall panel system, as well as all of the general sheet metal. Roofing Foreman Josh Rygg and his crew put on a Carlisle 60m full-spray TPO fleeceback over a full taper system over a structural concrete deck. The project consisted of multiple decks on multiple levels. There were many logistical challenges, including equipment access, material loading/unloading, and roof access. An installation of 4,000 sq. ft. of Carlisle CCW hot rubber waterproofing system over structural concrete deck was also installed.

This project was funded by the City of Phoenix. The building is occupied by Sky Harbor Airport’s escalator and conveyor belt maintenance company. The existing BUR roof was removed by an asbestos abatement company. Once the tearoff was complete, the crew removed and replaced over 800 sheets of wood decking, and then installed a mechanically fastened Fibertite KEE single-ply roof system over a half-inch recovery board.

LUBBOCK Big Business in Texas Lubbock, Texas is the newest home for Flynn. Unlike other US branches, Flynn Lubbock is not an acquisition or merger, but was built from the ground up. Branch Manager, Greg Vaughan says they’re enjoying a lot of success in a short amount of time, acquiring work and excellent employees. “The market is extraordinarily good to us. We recently hosted a great open house/ job fair, with Rob Dowrick (Field Recruitment Manager) and his team from Toronto to help us. Usually, that’s the kind of event only General Contractors host, so this was something new and special,” said Greg Vaughan. The branch has just added a new Estimator/PM, Chris Waites, and is currently seeking a new admin to assist Lara Vaughan, who has been taking care of all of the administration aspects of the local business. “Truth of the matter is that when you have a core team like I’ve got, that are as good as they are, it just makes my life so much easier.” said Greg.

Flynn Lubbock also has a solid service team established, managed by Matt Hill. Operations Manager, Seth Vaughan, oversees all crews and projects. “They’re doing an exceptional job and I couldn’t say enough good things about them,” said Greg. Greg has been asked to negotiate quite a few large projects, and received some assistance from Mike Pierce out of Kansas City for one in Amarillo. “Mike has been a really great mentor to me. We worked on a Berkshire Hathaway job which is about a $4 Million project. What he was able to do was fly in and spend the day with me and the owner developing a good game plan. He’s a super guy and it’s just one of the benefits of being with a company like Flynn,” said Greg. With service staying swamped, 50% of their projects are re-roofs while the other half are new construction. They’ve just been awarded the new Honors Dormitory for Texas Tech University. Flynn Southwest Lubbock, Texas could not be more proud to represent the Flynn Group of Companies.

Springfield Roofing Crew began work on a pitch tear-off at the start of July during the region’s seasonally grueling summer temperatures with heat indexes well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. With temperatures and material being so hot, the guys started just after midnight. This roof is one of many the branch is working on at Ozark Technical College, although fortunately the rest are TPO re-roofs. Many in the crew were new to the roofing industry, but they proved themselves more than capable of joining our Flynn Crew.

Mike Pierce Joins NRCA Board Flynn Kansas City Manager of Roofing Operations, Mike Pierce, has been a member of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) for 40 years. On June 1st, he officially became a board member, joining 37 other individuals nationwide. Pierce joins their committees for Workforce Solution and Health & Safety, holding their first meetings in July at the NRCA Headquarters in Chicago, IL.

According to Pierce, being on the board allows Flynn access to programs and resources that we haven’t yet tapped into, information available that the company just hasn’t been aware of.

“There are contract reviews and of course, wording is a big deal. They have five volumes of published research of wording changes for AIA that have been through legal. Also, there are studies of roof systems and how they’re performing and learning what’s right, what’s wrong, good, bad.” He says that the most beneficial aspect though, is the interaction with other members, “It’s a great opportunity for Flynn to be involved with leaders in the industry. We’re dealing with really knowledgeable people, but not direct competitors and so, people are willing to share information. The openness of the dialogue is really good.” Congratulations Mike, we’re proud to have you representing Flynn!

Microsoft Safety Champions “Today, July 11th 2016, Turner and Microsoft walked around the site for inspection. One point of inspection was to check on the roofers’ safety as well as quality. Upon approaching Flynn employees, David Gee and Charles Holloway, stopped Microsoft employees from walking into a hazardous work area. David explained the hazards associated with the work Flynn was doing at the time, and recommended that Microsoft employees walk the safest route around Flynn without being in hazardous perimeters, including the downwind factor. In the 0900 Safety meeting with all trades, Microsoft recognized Flynn for their ability to communicate hazard awareness with anyone who is walking or working near them, as well as their good delineation. Turner decided to give Flynn employees “Microsoft Safety Champion” stickers as well as recognition lunch tickets, to show their appreciation. As you are aware, back in mid-March, I had the opportunity to spend a few days with your crews on the ATN3 Facebook project. It is with great professional pleasure that I file this report. As you know, I have had the opportunity to observe roofing operations from JFK Airport in New York to California to Texas and all points in between... It was such a joy and a pleasure for me personally, to observe [Flynn] professionals performing their job. Regardless where I went on site those four days, whether it was a four man flashing crew or a twelve man lay down crew, everyone knew what/where/

how to do their task. There was no shouting/screaming/ cursing, just professionals doing what they do best! The quality/quantity of production was amazing. Any issues noted were taken care of immediately, or at least before the end of the day. It was obvious that the Foremen/ Lead Men had the respect of the men working with them and followed their lead. This re-roofing project utilized the Garland modified bituminous membrane system that was torch applied. Colored gravel and pavers were installed in a unique pattern to offer an aesthetically pleasing view from the attached high-rise building.

The Nova Centre is a one million sq. ft., mixed-use, LEED Gold commercial development under construction in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is comprised of a nineteen story hotel tower, two sixteen story office towers and the new Halifax Convention Centre. The Nova Center will also include three city blocks of retail space and a public pedestrian arcade. Flynn is proud to be working with construction manager EllisDon on this $500 million project. Flynn’s scope includes 87,000 sq. ft. of roofing spread out over twenty eight different areas. This includes: 24,500 sq. ft. of mechanically fastened PVC over the ballroom, 57,000 sq. ft. of torched on VB, adhered tapered ISO, adhered Soprasmart board and torched Cap sheet. There will also be 5,500 sq. ft. of green roofing. The project includes the largest ever produced curtain wall by Flynn Facades manufacturing plant in Toronto, Ontario. It is 182,839 sq. ft. (2,662 units) of Flynnwall 6450 Structurally Glazed Unitized Curtain wall featuring Viracon’s VRE26 and VRE59 Insulated Glass. This includes seventy-four windows that are thirty-four feet in height. The site crews were mindful of this project’s complexity and an enormous amount of pre-planning was conducted. As a result, this venture is on pace to be completed earlier than scheduled with near zero deficiencies reported by the clients inspectors. Site installation began on Nova Center in November of 2015 and is on pace to conclude by September of 2016. “The Nova Centre is a large project that demands a lot of coordination and commitment to the quality work Flynn is known for, and our team was ready for that,” said Eric Veniot, Manager Atlantic Region, Halifax. “In fact, during North American Occupational Safety and Health Week, EllisDon held a breakfast for all workers on site and chose to award Flynn’s glazing crew member Tim Bazinet for his proven commitment to health, safety, coaching workers and reporting hazards.”

Tommy Grace’s Story – The Importance of Safety On September 11, 2015 Tommy Grace, 38, went to work at his jobsite in St. John’s, Newfoundland just like he had done every other day that week. After news of an upcoming storm, he picked up a pallet to secure the site materials. When he picked up the pallet, he fell through a roof opening approximately a 30 foot drop below. Over the past 10 months, Tommy has been on a journey toward his recovery. While he still has a long road ahead, he decided he wanted to take the opportunity to share his story with his colleagues and friends at the St. John’s annual safety meeting on June 14 in hopes of preventing anything like this from happening again. “It took a lot of courage for him to get up and speak in front of his peers,” said Mark Campbell, Health and Safety Manager for the Atlantic Region. “Tommy discussed the importance of field level risk assessment, and the necessity of good communication as a crew. You could hear a pin drop in the room the entire time he was speaking. His message was a very strong one and was very well received.” Cory Nickels, Director of Health and Safety has been keeping in touch with Tommy regularly. “Tommy’s speech was emotional and impactful as he discussed all of the human emotions he struggled with throughout his recovery,” said Cory. “His journey to recovery took him from stages of anger and blame. Now he focuses on how we can prevent incidents like this from ever happening again. He spoke of the impact this incident has on his life – not only his work life and his inability to return to the job, but also the huge impact it has on his family life. The St. John’s Branch employees in that room absorbed every word. It was a great message from a very strong and courageous man.” 13

The first of several projects in the Gander area this summer/fall. The team in St. John are currently working on a roofing upgrade for the Gander Smart Centre so as to extend the life of the roofing system.

The Schlumberger Building is a 5,300 sq. ft. project being worked on by Foreman Ken Peterson and crew members (from left to right) Kevin Greeley, Pascal Desjardins, Charles Wells, Gord Fitzpatrick, Ken Petersen, John Collier and Eric Weldon pictured above. This roof was originally installed in 2014 by another roofing contractor. During a severe windstorm in April, 2016 the roofing system was damaged and resulted in a partial blow off of the existing roof/parapets and roof hatch. Flynn was awarded the contract to supply and install a new roof/parapets/roof hatch and make repairs to the existing metal cladding. Work was just completed this June. Job well done guys.

SPORTS SPONSORSHIPS Dynasty Team Corey Fontaine (Glazing Project Manager) and Ellie received a sports sponsorship for the team Dynasty. At 11 years old they won the 2015 National Championship in volleyball in New Orleans. This year (age 12) they are ranked among the top teams in the nation. They have earned a bid to compete again this year at the Nationals in Indianapolis. They have a record of 157-18 with six losses. With all their time spent on the court they still find time to help their community by collecting clothes for Goodwill and they also plan to participate at the Down Syndrome Walk in October.

They are a 13AA baseball team from Independence, Missouri that plays league ball in Lee’s Summit and Independence. The team also competes in local tournaments every other weekend. MONCTON Tactical Patrol Vehicle Building Submitted by Kyle Kennedy

To the left are photos of the Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle building or TAPV for short, being built for the Canadian Armed Forces at CFB Gagetown, NB, one of Canada’s largest bases. The building is being constructed to house CFB Gagetown’s armoured vehicles. The team started this project back on April 27th, and it is their first large project with PCL (GC) in NB in recent years. The job is 70,400 sq. ft. and is one the largest of Moncton branches three currently on-going Defense Construction Canada projects. Roger Savoie (Superintendent) and his crew will be seeing the project through to completion this summer.

They have installed this huge skylight on a tubular steel structure, glass partitions and inclined conventional stick curtain wall. One of these projects consists of the installation of coloured glass triangles hanging from the ceiling.

The Montreal crew have been working on the 7th and 8th floors of the 40 floor Icone Condos in downtown Montreal. They are using Curtain Wall Stick from Vitreco and Unitized from NFL. Glazing at the Museum of Nature Submitted by: John Paiva

The Museum of Nature was the first major Service Glazing project for the newly formed Glazing department in Ottawa. They replaced two sections of glass in the Lantern area, which was a project initially completed by Flynn 10 years ago. The process was very delicate and precise as you can see by the pictures. The Glass Lantern of the museum needed two sections of glass removed from the southwest corner. You can see the crew go through their process of removing the glass and safely disposing it. The team then tied additional ropes to stabilize the new glass as it gets hoisted by the crane. The final shot is of the entire team posing in front of the Museum. Great work!

IN THE COMMUNITY Flynn Flash Team Raises Over $80,000 for MS Doug Scutchings originally got interested in the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) charity due to a family member with MS. Over the years, that connection has grown due to the amount of contacts made with people at the MS bike events. Their stories and friendships have grown so much over the years that he has continued his efforts in fundraising.

“In 2007, the Flynn Flash Fundraising team started to ride in the MS Bike Tour, a 150 km ride to raise money for those affected by MS (Multiple Sclerosis). Over the years many Flynn employees have taken on the challenge of the 150 km peddle and raising money for those in need. Each year the bike team raises the bar for the following year, adding to it, we also volunteer for the MS Walk each year. As Team Captain, I am proud of the dedication shown by my team members and happy to announce that in the last nine years we have raised an amazing $85,838. Flynn’s Khalilah Campbell Co-Authors Book Flynn’s own Khalilah Campbell recently co-authored the book Foundation of The Guyana Defence Force: “A Soldier of Valour Story” with Lieutenant Colonel (Ret’d) Compton Hartley Liverpool. Due to his blindness the Lieutenant Colonel requested that Khalilah write his story. This book documents the military history of Guyana, the Guyana Defence Force and the Lieutenant Colonel’s involvement. “There is nothing currently like this when it comes to military history in Guyana. We need to preserve this information for future generations.” said Khalilah Campbell. Congratulations on your accomplishment Khalilah.

TORONTO

Toronto-Dominion Tower 2 Submitted by: Kyle Merstorf

The Toronto team is currently right in the heart of downtown Toronto working on the iconic TD buildings. Jose Neiva and his crew completed Tower 4 last year and did an exceptional job, pleasing both the owner (Cadillac Fairview) and the consultant teams. Currently they are working on Tower 2 and are using Soprema with a 3 PLY torch system. Due to the location of the building, all material and equipment access is limited to 7pm to 7am, which means the team has to remove the existing roofing system at night. On top of that, all roofing materials are moved through the underground PATH system, which can be restrictive. Despite these challenges things are progressing well and the team is looking forward to a job well done. 23

FLYNN MANUFACTURING

Tower E Performance Mock-Up Submitted by: Phillip Ciantar

The Flynn design team led by John Spadaro and Tyler Koshurba along with the R&D department (Phillip Ciantar, Walter Lucas & Steve Katsoras) have been working on a performance mock-up for the Tower E project currently under construction in Edmonton’s downtown Ice District. Tower E, a 67 story mixed use high rise building will not only be the tallest building in Canada outside of Toronto, but will be the largest tower that Flynn has worked on to date, with 30 floors of office/retail space and 36 floors of residential unitized 6450 UCW (unitized curtain wall). Two separate performance mock-ups need to be completed for this project alone. The first phase of the office has already begun manufacturing within the Toronto facility and will shortly be transported to undergo rigorous testing in early August in Miami, Florida. Testing will include air, water, seismic, inter-story differential deflection, thermal as well as specialized tests for the deep caps and window washing buttons on the job. The Flynn Team Behind The Scenes Submitted by: Jem Punzalan

In recognition of all of those behind the scenes in our great company, we thought we could share some stories about some of our people in Winnipeg that support us in the shops. The Winnipeg Branch houses not only the Trim shop (1/3 of the Mid West Trim Group supporting Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta) but also houses a fully functional Composite and “Stick Glazing� facility. The Winnipeg trim shop is capable of producing 1.3 million feet of trim per year in a single shift. Centrally located, the shop has been able to manufacture high volumes of product to major projects in the Midwest, both in Canada and the U.S. at reasonably low costs. With their multi-scope profile in roofing, cladding and glazing, the Winnipeg shops have grown in productivity and are prepared for whatever comes their way. Adam Hodgins (Shop Supervisor) has 14 years experience in all aspects of fabrication with Flynn and heads all three products with his great team of fabrication specialists.

Supporting the shops along with Adam is our glazing/ composite Fabrication Coordinator Arkadi Abramovski who manufactures the products that are used on many of our architectural projects. Arkadi started glazing for Flynn in 2014 and within a year became a Project Coordinator in the office. Recognizing his skills and knowledge as an Industrial Engineer in his hometown and now an EIT, he was quickly promoted to the Glazing Shop Coordinator with the role to oversee the manufacturing of these products. Winnipeg was the first shop to enter into composite paneling for Flynn and now can provide all parts associated with the building envelope systems we provide, with the exclusion of unitized. The unique characteristics this team brings together ranges from their ability to turret punch sub-girts and perforated soffits or even practicing their layups on their prized basketball net (during breaks). Regional Vice President, Dave Sterling recognizes that the team quietly and efficiently supports not only the region but the company in their efforts day in and day out. Being able to explore new fabrication opportunities as well as supporting our companions to the south would not be possible without all of their hard work.

The Winnipeg Branch Crane Operator Andy Schrot is quite commonly tasked with difficult jobs where his skills and expertise are tested day in and day out. Andy does not disappoint! Job after job, Andy gets the tasks done without incident and in the safest way possible. Currently Andy is working on three projects, one of which is the Bipole Riel - MB Hydro Project. The roofing division is currently installing 742 sqs of Modified Bitumen Roof System and requires a substantial amount of material to be delivered. Andy has to thoroughly pay attention to changing weather and wind directions, ground his crane truck to the grounding grid below the hydro sub-station and delineate his lift zone with appropriate tags and signage. Long story short, we want to thank Andy for his hard work here at Flynn! FLYNN

SASKATOON SureHire at WorkHole in Heart Found The Prairie region started SureHire one year ago and have put approximately 200 people through their Fitness-to-Work assessments based on Flynn’s own Physical Demands Analysis. Recently in the Prairies we had a candidate go through an assessment where it was discovered that the fellow had an irregular heartbeat. He decided to seek further medical advice. Upon further investigation his medical team discovered he had a hole in his heart and needed surgery. His family called us thanking us for the testing their son went through to work at Flynn.

There are three projects involving schools currently underway in the area. FLYNN’S TECHNICAL TRAINING SPECIALISTS

Frank Kraus joined Flynn as part of the Peerless acquisition in 1997. After spending 30+ years in the field Frank recently joined Flynn’s OPEX team in a new role as a Technical Training Specialist. His most recent trip was to Flagstaff, Arizona where he spent two weeks working with Foreman Jay Riot and crew helping them upgrade their TPO Roofing Skills, specifically RhinoBond application methods. Being a Technical Training Specialist means Frank travels to specific branches and works with crews through handson training to upgrade their roofing skills, specifically single-ply systems. “We want to see this opportunity exposed to other crews and other branch managers and management so roofs can be installed with no, or as few, deficiencies as possible further improving our reputation,” said Michael Petch, Roofing Operations Support Specialist who orchestrates the scheduling for this training.

MARG MALONE – THE FACE OF FLYNN IS RETIRING For 25 years Marg’s smile has been a constant at our front desk in Toronto, when you walked through our door she was the first person you saw. This gave her the special role of acting as our ambassador to anyone visiting Flynn. Her courteous and personable attitude made her ideal for her position. First impressions are always important, and Marg was our first impression to thousands of people throughout the years.

“Marg was a great receptionist, I would often hear our clients comment on her etiquette and on how professional she was,” said Manny De Sousa, Vice President of Risk Management. “She was an important part of the image we want for Flynn.” Marg was born in St. John’s Newfoundland and grew up in the small town of Old St. John’s. Schooled by nuns, Marg attributes the ever looming ruler for her keen attention to grammar. While in St. John’s Marg met David, her husband of 43 years, and together they moved to Ontario and married in 1964. After having three children, Tara, Ian and Kerry, Marg went back to work. Marg began working for Peerless in 1991, which was eventually acquired by Flynn Canada in 1997. “I always appreciated how Flynn treated us when they bought Peerless. It was a scary time, we were unsure about the future of our jobs,” said Marg. “But not only did Flynn keep us on, we also retained our seniority. I will always appreciate that. Flynn knows how to recognize great people and I believe it helped ensure we started off on the right foot in Toronto.” Now after 25 years Marg is ready to focus on other aspects of her life. In addition to painting and travelling, Marg hopes to spend more time with her five beautiful grandchildren. Her leaving will be felt throughout all of Flynn, and we wish her all the best in everything she does.

A Profile on Flynn Mentors Mentorship ensures our success as a company and that the Flynn Way continues to stay strong. The mentor nominated for special recognition this time comes from our Kansas City branch. Jerry Schaefer, Vice President, Midwest US Region, was nominated by Bob Livingston, Branch Manager, Mike Pierce, Roofing Operations Manager, Vern Keeth, Glazing Operations Manager, and Ben Pettus, Director of Finance, Flynn Midwest. We asked all four of them to tell us their reasons for choosing Jerry.

In my mind it’s how he respects others, how he gets to know others outside the workplace. One thing I really needed to work on was my tendency not to lighten up at work. I needed to get to know people, their family, and their interests outside of the workplace. What we do goes well beyond our office, it goes right to the client. You really want to know your client, their family, and their interests. He really taught me the importance of human connection.

Jerry backs your process, he doesn’t judge you by what you did, but he holds you accountable for the process and wants you to learn from it. While you talk to him he is listening, he also guides you to come up with your own conclusion, your own answer. He won’t just give you the answer. He really draws things out of you. We all make mistakes, but you have to learn from them. I think he holds you to a non-threatening accountability. You are totally held accountable, you want to be your best, and you don’t want to let him down. When you do succeed, he’s ecstatic, he enjoys making the people around him more successful.

Jerry just makes sure that everyone is on the same playing field and that everyone is accountable. He doesn’t put himself above others. He makes sure everyone has what they need to get the job done, while still having the expectation the job gets done. He is very attentive to others, and treats people with respect. When you are talking to him, he is really listening, he is not just sitting there developing his own answer.

On top of that, when things get tough, I think Jerry is able to identify what motivates every individual. Everyone is different. I know I am very competitive, so he turns a problem into a challenge. He will even say, “Do I need to take care of that?” Which I take as a challenge to get it done, and that works for me.

I think Jerry has a very good read of people, he’s a master of making you stand out and getting the right mix of people working together. This is because he is very good at bringing together conflicting personalities. I would say that before I met Jerry, before I worked with him, I was more volatile, more reactive. Jerry taught me how to calm down, walk away, and come back with a plan. It’s important to think on how to solve a problem, and not just react to it.

Vern Keeth Jerry enjoys sharing his knowledge, he likes to see growth and development. I would report to Jerry when there was an issue, and he would always offer suggestions and advice on what he thought was the best way to handle it. That said, he would also empower you to go take care of the problem. There is no back and forth like a sales person and their sales manager. He does not micromanage, but he still supervises the team. He’s given me the opportunity to lead in an unencumbered way, and he trusts you to get the job done. He has always been there as support. If you are uncertain and you want to go in a new direction, you can bounce ideas off him and he’s going to help you out. He is good at reading people and knowing what they need, for example, Jerry knows I require reinforcement and a show of confidence. He makes you want to pass it all on, his style is really inspirational. Jerry tells us all the time, I found my replacement, where is yours? It really pushes the importance of finding someone to carry on after us.

Ben Pettus Jerry has the ability to look at a situation and think through every possible scenario – like in chess when you are thinking three or four moves ahead and looking at all of the different possibilities. I’ve never known a person with Jerry’s ability to analyze a problem or a set of circumstances and look at it from every angle, then zero in on the solution or resolution like a laser beam. Jerry doesn’t micro-manage, so he has never been one to hover over employees, or think that “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself”, but at the same time he has a very detailed knowledge of what everyone in the company is doing. Jerry started in a truck, then the shop, then Shop Manager, then Estimator & Project Manager, then Vice President, then Owner. He has improved every process he has touched, or developed new processes all together. He is extremely observant and picks up on things very quickly. He knows virtually every aspect of our business and his leadership is based on a wealth of knowledge and experience. Jerry says “surround yourself with people smarter than you to be successful”. Of course, that makes the rest of us feel good, but in reality Jerry is one of the smartest people I know. I think for him it means surround yourself with smart people that have expertise in areas where you don’t. Some people shy away from leadership, but Jerry is most comfortable when he is in charge. When we go anywhere, Jerry drives. Jerry drives the car, Jerry drives the boat, Jerry drives the golf cart – if he had his pilot’s license he’d be up there in the cockpit when he travels. When Jerry is on a Board or in an association, he becomes the president. He is a natural leader. If he was in the army, he’d be a general.

In 2014, when I met the people that worked with Jerry, well that was all I needed to understand what a special leader Jerry is. I have heard Jerry say more than once ‘surround yourself with people smarter than you, and you will seem smarter’ which is something I really believe in as well. Emerald Hills Aquatic Centre Submitted by: Kerri Zacharias

For the past 10 months, the Edmonton Metals team has worked to complete the Emerald Hills Aquatic Centre. This project was the first of its kind for Edmonton. The exterior wall system consisted of hat bars and clips with a continuous seamed panel. Jimmy Wade participated in a Kalzip training session in England, UK to be able to install this product for the project. The exterior cladding was shipped in coils of aluminum and fabricated on site with a 25,000 lb. roll former. Kalzip provided an operator for three days to run the cut list of the entire project.

At the TeamKal meeting in Toronto on June 1st, Flynn Calgary won the Best FC Rainscreen Award for the University of Calgary Residence buildings. Darkness into Light is a suicide prevention foundation that started in Ireland and is now worldwide. In May, they had a fundraiser in Vancouver for which Flynn donated safety cones. Below is a letter from the foundation. “Dear Flynn Construction Canada, The entire Darkness into Light Vancouver 2016 Committee would like to send our sincere gratitude for all of your support with this years walk on May 7th 2016! JDRF Raffle (Kansas City) One of the charities that Flynn Kansas City annually contributes to is the JDRF Foundation Dream Gala, whose mission is to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. This year, the branch contributed coveted World Series Champions Kansas City Royals tickets to the event. Although a small contribution, the four tickets were used in the raffle, raising $10,200 for JDRF!

Alberta Fires (Calgary and Edmonton) Submitted by: Connie Applin and Sarah Woolverton

On May 1st one of Canada’s worst natural disasters hit. A wildfire began in Alberta and spread across 1.5 million acres, causing a state of emergency and the evacuation of 88,000 people. Flynn employees in Alberta did their part in raising donations to help their community. A total of $3,003 was raised in Edmonton and matched by Flynn for a total of $6,006. The Calgary branch has donated clothes and $1,000 worth of food, water, and toiletries for those who lost their homes. The fire was officially declared under control on July 5, and we keep all of those affected in our hearts and our thoughts. 39

I just wanted to say thank you for your quick response last night. Again Flynn has been amazing to work with throughout this job and you definitely saved me a lot of headaches last night at the grand opening. Thanks again.

The Banff Gondola in Brent van Kessel Banff, Alberta opened Superintendent Graham Construction in 1959 and has transported more than 21 million guests to the top of Sulphur Mountain in Banff National Park. After a two and a half year planning period, renovations are now well underway. In conjunction with General Contractor PCL, Flynn is doing metals work consisting of 7,000 sq. ft. of Accumet Composite panels, 4,000 sq. ft. of Kalzip FC Aluminum Panels, 4,000 sq. ft. of Taktl Fibre Cement Panels, 1,200 sq. ft. of JSM standing seam roofing and glazing work consisting of Kawneer Stick Built Curtain Wall entrances and glass railing on the roof/lookout area. The grand opening is scheduled for August 1st, 2016. 41

Flynn was awarded a re-roof for two sections of the Abbott Building at Kelowna General Hospital. The scope of the project quickly expanded and we took on extra work that essentially doubled the original contract value. We completed some work for General Contractor Black & McDonald in the past, but this became the most significant project for the Kelowna branch in the past few years. W.L. Seaton Secondary School Submitted by: Kim Gaskill

This project is a milestone for School District 22, as it is the first time they scheduled a construction project while school was in session. Safety is always our priority, but it becomes even more crucial to employ safe work practices with students, parents, and school staff in the building and on the grounds during work hours. Our crew, led by TJ Vandale, did an amazing job on this 660 square SBS project that started in the middle of winter. Not only was the project itself challenging - with a sloped insulation package, numerous crickets, extensive woodwork, and carpentry - but it also required considerable coordination with the school to maximize production on pro-d days as well as designate appropriate work areas. Always aware of school recess and lunch breaks, plus drop-off and pick-up times, our crew outdid themselves with a job well done. Yet, another occasion where our Flynn team has positively increased our visibility in the Okanagan region as we continue our growth in the area.

East Park

One of our Kelowna crews traveled to Victoria to provide some additional manpower for some of their local projects. One of the jobs they worked on was East Park with Victoria Foreman Geoff Myers. One Saturday, a client emailed Victoria Superintendent Ken Littleproud with some wonderful words of praise. He wrote: “The guys arrived on time, and in good spirits, and managed to accomplish an amazing amount of work today... They have all worked a good day, and I am both impressed and grateful.�

He went on to compliment Geoff, noting his skills in managing a large crew under some challenging conditions, as well as his ability to pay attention to the details. He mentioned that Kelowna Foreman Dwayne Stoski followed suit while he was on site. It is wonderful to see instances where crews from different branches can work together, ensuring that the client receives consistent service and a final product that they are completely satisfied with. Kudos to all the team members from both branches for their teamwork and professionalism!

VICTORIA BC Hydro George Tripp Substation Submitted by: Gary Stride

Geoff Myers and crew removed the existing roofing down to the steel deck and then carried out a full roof replacement, including DensDeck Prime, two layers of ISO, crickets, Sopraboard, and torch base and cap. Cold process was used beneath some of the units that supported rooftop diesel generators. The George Tripp Substation services 26,000 customers and is one of the four BC Hydro substations in the province that the Victoria branch has worked on this year.

A substation is the link between the utilities Transmission and Distribution systems. As significant electrical safety considerations are present on site, all personnel working on these sites needed to have BC Hydro Electrical Safety training prior to accessing the station. The scaffold supported roof access staircase had to be bonded (or grounded) to the structure. The crane and delivery trucks had to be bonded to the structure, as well. Portions of the work had to be carried out wearing flame-resistant clothing and under the direct supervision of a BC Hydro Safety representative. Even the Fire Department was not permitted on site without an escort, even in the event of an emergency.

Fleet Maintenance Facility Submitted by: Gary Stride

Flynn Project Superintendent Mark O’Hanley is on site full time supervising and coordinating our trades (roofing, metals, and glazing) on this multi-scope project. This phase is part of a multi-year modernization and consolidation of the Fleet Maintenance Facility at the Navy Base in Victoria, headquarters for the Maritime Forces Pacific. The last proposed phase will be in 2018. This consolidation will streamline the ship repair processes, resulting in cost savings, efficiencies, and improved scheduling. General Contractors EllisDon and Kinetic Construction merged together for this project to oversee the work. Multiple trades, construction teams, hazardous waste, demolition, and the unearthing of unknown surprises are some of the challenges that all of the teams on this site encounter almost daily. In addition, all of this work is being coordinated within an environment of well over 1,000 civilian and military staff working literally beneath and beside the ongoing demolition and construction. A National Defense Audit published in March 2011 reveals the total budgeted cost for the “Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton Shop Consolidation Project” will be a staggering $1.35 trillion. There are other projects underway or proposed on the base as well. FLYNN

VICTORIA Puntledge Substation Submitted by: Gary Stride

Wahib and Kyle carried out a roof restoration on a deteriorating standing seam roof at this BC Hydro substation located on the central east coast of Vancouver Island. Working in close proximity to high voltage necessitated special training by BC Hydro and at times, supervision by a BC Hydro Safety Representative. After all of the safety considerations were addressed the roof was cleaned in preparation for an RMI corrosion resistant coating.

After the successful completion of this project, Wahib and Kyle were dispatched to the central coast on the mainland to carry out a similar restoration on the Rupert Substation, south of Prince Rupert, BC.

Greenlades Community Centre Submitted by: Gary Stride

This community centre recently underwent a roof rehabiliation using Tremcos Alumination 301. First up, was the surface preparation, then the gutter removal, followed up with the spray application of the Alumination 301 and the gutter replacement. The Community Centre remained in operation during the work, which presented the usual and challenging conditions for the crew. Uptown Mall - Phase 3 Submitted by: Gary Stride

Construction of Phase 3 at the Uptown Shopping Centre in Victoria is well underway. Shawn Mason and crew have been assigned to install the architectural panels and cladding. This includes the roll-on air barrier, Roxul insulation, Nichiha fibre cement panels, Accumet 2000 panels, and Aluminum Longboard.

The Uptown Mall property is now the most valuable commercial property in Victoria. Shaw also supervised the exterior cladding and paneling of Phase 1, From left to right: Nigel Bazinet, Dave which started in 2008. Phase 2 followed shortly afterward. Phase 3 was put on Petrie, Mike Pilling, Foreman Shawn the shelf until the economy turned around. The original plans called for Phase 4, Mason, Liam Clinging and Jose Milan which included two 36-story residential towers. Phase 4 has been revamped and will proceed with a smaller residential development comprised of rental accommodations. Construction is slated to begin once the plans have been approved by the city.

The $1.3 billion development is divided into four phases spanning over the next 20 years. The up-and-coming urban hub will consist of 1.1 million sq. ft. of retail space, 11 towers with 4.5 million sq. ft., and a half-million sq. ft. dedicated to office use. Flynn Vancouver has been awarded a $10.8 million contract to complete work on three different commercial buildings. The project team includes Berzin Kerim (Estimator), Bob Lee (Sr. Estimator), Serge Crête (Project Manager), Rou Golsheh (Project Coordinator), John Ngo (Design Manager), Brett Templeman (Superintendent), Ramon Labayo (Drafter), and Candice Lau (Jr. Project Coordinator). Flynn’s scope of work will ultimately consist of curtain wall glazing over 70,000 sq. ft. (with potential of being awarded another 15,000 sq. ft.), a structural glass elevator shaft, skylight, five different custom fins along the curtain wall, glass guardrails, glass canopies, and interior glazing partitions. Flynn’s contract award can be attributed to the good relationship developed with the General Contractor EllisDon, through current projects such as the Emily Carr University and the Joseph & Rosalie Seagal Family Health Centre. The construction duration for Flynn’s scope of work is approximately one year. FLYNN

Edencrest Estates is a multi-tenant residential project that comprises 57,200 sq. ft. of shingle roofing, SBS membrane, PMMA, sheet metal flashings, gutters and pavers. Assuming the daunting role of self-managing the project, strata members Dave Tredgett and Barry Wilson were understandably nervous. They were asked to be in charge of a considerable expense towards an industry that, at times, has a poor reputation in British Columbia and is unfortunately associated with some less-than-reputable contractors. Over the course of the last few years, Flynn has developed a reputation among owners, consultants, and engineers of being a leader and difference maker in this industry sector. In fact, Flynn was not the low bidder on this project, but was awarded the contract based on that reputation. 47

After enduring a slow project start due to the rainy climate, the crew was able to establish a sound game plan and completed a project that left all associated parties very pleased. A great relationship was quickly established between the crew and the strata members. Nearing project completion, the strata were so pleased with our crew that they generously felt obligated to show their appreciation. During the last few weeks of work, the strata members sourced a local deli to provide a catered luncheon for the crew and our management staff. Prior to eating, Dave stood and gave a stirring speech to convey his gratitude for a job well done. The surprisingly emotional tone in his voice reminded one that this process must be very intimidating for property owners. As our market is predominately large stratas, it’s truly a credit to the crew to have a strata undergo an expenditure of a half-million dollars while maintaining this level of customer satisfaction. Well done, guys!

THANK YOU – EDENCREST ESTATES When the Strata Council of Edencrest Estates in South Surrey, BC started out on the daunting task of putting together a roof replacement program, it became obvious that the project was bigger than any of us had anticipated. We are a 24-unit townhouse complex c/w an amenity center with a lot of cedar roof in place. We studied and evaluated our options for approximately four months and then went to the market c/w with a consultant. We decided on Flynn Canada not realizing the relationship that was about to be established. Under the direction of Martin Oldford, we met his staff before the actual project starting date as our roof started to develop leaks from our winter rainy months. Girard Tablate, the Supervisor of the crew who became our main stay during the roof reconstruction, was there for us during these leaky spells. Once the project started we realized that even though it was a business relationship first of all, it slowly became a personal relationship between myself, Martin and Girard. We worked together for four months during the cold and wet of Jan. and 30 degree heat of early April and the crew became part of my family. Near the end of the project, Barry Wilson (Strat President) and I got together and wanted to reward the staff for their work ethic and respect for our neighborhood, cleaning up after themselves and dealing with residents like gentlemen. So we had a lunch put together for the 11 guys, along with Martin, prior to the “Final Inspection”. We felt this was the least we could do for a bunch of guys who did a great job in a very business-like manner. I never thought I could get excited about a roof replacement, but along with the comments and complements we are receiving, we are very pleased with our final results. We are super pleased with the quality of the work and overall look that Flynn has brought to the table. Thanks to all involved.

Crestwood Corporate Centre Submitted by: Dennis Griffin

Foreman Don Kristensen received his 25 Years of Service Award, however he was not able to attend the formal presentation ceremony. Therefore, he was presented the plaque at the jobsite for Crestwood Corporate Centre. This project is a 390 square SBS re-roof, removal of existing 4-ply BUR insulation and gypsum, and a new DensDeck VB insulation, overlay, and 2-ply SBS. With Donny’s tenure, he was an easy and ideal choice for this project over several corporate offices, including EllisDon. Thank you Donny for your years of loyalty and commitment to Flynn, and thanks to the crew for a job well done!
