PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Mentorship Matters! I know it’s not something we often think about, but we will all – sooner or later – exit the workforce and move onto another stage of our lives. We probably don’t think about this very much because we are just too busy with our daily lives and the responsibilities of today. Whether it is the responsibilities that come with raising children, or paying off a mortgage, or just getting the job done, this busyness seems to get in the way of us thinking that someday, we will move on. However, those of us with experience have the responsibility of mentoring the next generation in some fashion, whether we think of ourselves as mentors or not. As a mentor, have you ever thought about how you would like to be remembered? This thought brings me to what I would like to talk about today – “Mentorship”. We have all learned a lot of things in order for us to do our jobs effectively. In some cases, there has been formal training at a Trade School, College or University, but in the majority of cases, you have learned what you know on the job in an informal way because someone took the time to teach and train you. We have all had mentors along the way. There is an old saying; “People don’t know what they don’t know”. Good mentors “get this” and it results in a big dose of patience when they are teaching the young people around them some things that they have done more than a few times. There is another side to this thought that some of us who have been around a while might catch ourselves thinking when dealing with young people new to the trade, and it might go something like this; “Wow, I forgot how much I DO know!”” This, of course, usually comes to mind at a moment of truth when dealing with a young person, and is an opportunity to be a good mentor. We have many great mentors in our organization - we just couldn’t have achieved the level of success that we have so far without these types of people who are willing and are actually happy and motivated to pass on their knowledge to the next generation. In fact, mentorship and leadership go hand in hand. If you think for a minute about the best mentor you have ever had, I bet you would also say he/she was a terrific leader as well. Now, I will be the first to admit that in the past, we haven’t celebrated great mentorship enough. This is why we will be dedicating a section of every Flynn Flash from now on to profiling a great mentor in the organization. This section will be called Mentorship Matters, and the first installment of this section is on page 26. I am hoping that as we celebrate our great mentors, we will move towards having a “learning culture” even more than we do now!

The benefits to an organization with a great mentorship culture are obvious. But, it is equally obvious to me that individual job satisfaction can be measured in a number of different ways, and believe me when I say it feels good to pass on your knowledge to younger people, and then watch them learn and get ahead. This is a personal satisfaction that it difficult to describe, but is an undeniably good feeling. With that in mind, I am pleased to report that our Flynn University y program will be developing a “Mentorship” module, which will be a personal development opportunity for our Foremen and other senior staff to develop their mentorship skills. People will be invited to participate and you will all hear more about this as the program is developed. In the meantime, I have a request for the readers of this message. Please send me your nomination(s) of someone who you would like to see profiled in future issues of the Flash, in the Mentorship Matterss section of this magazine. What better way to say thank you to someone who you feel has been a great mentor to you! You can do this by emailing me your nomination, with a few words about why you would like to see them profiled. I look forward to hearing some great stories! Until next time, stay safe.

T.A.S.K SUBMISSIONS & WINNER TEAMWORK ATTITUDE SHARING KNOWLEDGE

The Flynn T.A.S.K. was created to promote the communication of good ideas within the company, from one office to another. Submissions are reviewed and selected by President and CEO Doug Flynn three times per year.

We are pleased to announce the first T.A.S.K winners of 2014 are Terry Rideout and Clayton Davidiuk from Flynn Edmonton. Rideout and Davidiuk said they ran into a challenge while trying to properly set-up guardrails on a job where Architectural panels were already in place. “We didn’t want to risk damaging the expensive panels, and knew it was more important to have the guardrails properly secured, so instead of using wooden blocking that could fall off, we fabricated a steel hat channel that is notched down the middle to allow the bottom adjustment on the guardrail to slide into the notch. This steel plate is screwed down to a 12" x 12" x 3/4" pc of plywood to prevent damage to the expensive panels and allows us to secure the guardrail in place properly. We also attached a scrap pc of EPDM to the plywood to take it one step further to prevent scratches from the plywood.” Way to go, guys!

PICTOU JUSTICE CENTRE A WIN FOR FLYNN

Normally, when you see three Cape Bretoners and three Irishmen standing in front of a courthouse on a beautiful morning – it’s not work-related. But in this case, it is. In conjunction with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, the Halifax Branch is replacing the metal roof on the courthouse in Pictou, NS. 17000 sq. ft. of Tradition 100 is being installed, along with replacement glazing for the large skylight over the main entrance. The crew has been dealing with severe weather for much of the project; snowstorm after snowstorm along with high winds and freezing temperatures as the building sits next to the ocean. Thanks for the hard work and dedication on this one!

The modernization of the Dalhousie University Campus continues! Project Manager Aecon Buildings is building the LeMarchant Street Multi-Use Facility, which will house 300 students and offer services such as health care, counselling and immigration needs. Foremen Robert MacKinnon and Fernando Richard and their crew are headed down the final stretch of their installation; almost 50000 sq. ft. of Fibre C panels and 5000 sq. ft. of insulated foam panels. Great job!

When the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre’s roof needed help, the Moncton crew quickly provided a solution to properly protect it by fastening the system. This was done by installing aluminum strapping sealed with cover strips on an EPDM roof.

Located in the heart of St. John’s, 80 Mews Place will be an 18,900 sq. ft. building upon completion. The roof is 120 squares with a 2-ply modified roof (torch applied) and related 26 GA metal flashings.

Some obstacles included addressing the different decking systems and coordinating with hospitals strict schedule policies. The finished product was completed ahead of schedule resulting in the client being extremely pleased with Flynn’s Service. Way to go, guys! The St. John’s branch had an extremely busy fall, especially in the Production Roofing division. There are many roofing jobs already up and running, including numerous re-roofs both in the area and out of town with more planned for year ahead. It is shaping out to be one of Flynn’s busiest years for roofing in St. John’s!

MAJOR UPGRADE FOR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL ■ Submitted by Steven Pass

The Charles P. Allen High School project, known as the Bedford High School at the time of our installations by the Halifax Metals crews, was a project consisting of 50000 sq. ft. of metal siding in three different colors and profiles, 6800 sq. ft. of Aluminum Composite panels in two different colors, including the eye catching prismatic red at the entrances. There was also 1000 sq. ft. of SolarWall. In addition, we took on the installation of the windows as an extra to our contract with PCL.

All of this work kept our crews busy during a slow time in the area. Special thanks to all who helped bring this project to a successful completion!

FLYNN MONCTON TACKLES ONE OF THEIR LARGEST PROJECTS TO DATE ■ Submitted by Serge LeBlanc

In conjunction with Maxim 2000 Inc., Flynn Moncton recently completed the Kent Building Supplies Distribution Centre located just off the TransCanada Highway. At 319,000 sq. ft. of insulated warehouse and office space with 60,000 sq. ft. of non-insulated canopy, this structure will be one of the largest buildings in the province of New Brunswick and one of the largest projects the Moncton Branch ever undertook. In the warehouse and office area, crews used loose laid Kraft VB, two layers of 2.5 In. Iso, Soprafix 635 base sheet, mechanically fastened to steel deck CSA A123.21 Standard, and Soprafix 650 cap sheet torched. For the canopy area, they used ½ Densdeck on steel deck, Soprafix 635 Base sheet, mechanically fastened to steel deck is CSA A123.21 Standard, and Soprafix 650 Cap sheet torched. The large scale of this project allowed us to use the Mini-Macaden to install the cap sheet. With the help of Toronto Foreman Sandro Nunes for the initial set-up and training, the crew utilized the Mini-Macaden to efficiently install the field cap on this project. The General Contractor and owner were very pleased with our attention to safety, good quality work and production rates.

St. Joseph’s Hospital’s future as a leading teaching hospital in acute and ambulatory care is taking shape! In conjunction with EllisDon Corporation, The Flynn London crew of Sergio Martinez, Eddy Medeiros, Jeff Mowry, Rob Monk, Nathan Medeiros, Gord Dennis, Ryne Wagner and Rui Medeiros are gearing up to complete the St. Joseph’s Health Care, Ambulatory Care M2P3 (Milestome 2, Phase 3).

Flynn’s green roof team has regular contact with current PhD researchers, Jenny Hill (Hydrology), pictured right, and Scott MacIvor (Ecology). Jenny regularly visits the Toronto office to keep up to date with industry news and requirements.

The project required the use of the Soprema Modified Bituminous Membrane, and Pre-Vegetated Modular Green Roof System. The crew added a vapour barrier, mechanically fastened two layer of insulation, mopped tapered insulation and sopraboard, mopped one layer of base sheet and torched a cap sheet. The MutiPhase project is expected to conclude in 2015.

Preferring to be outdoors, in the summer of 2013 Jenny began a survey of green roofs across Southern Ontario, many during Flynn’s visits with Becky Murphy, Eddy Jara or Terry McGlade. These survey activities will continue through summer 2014, as she’s also preparing a computer simulation model to calculate the relative benefit each roof offers in storm water management! Mother Nature’s Winter Blast was not enough to discourage Flynn from helping Target Store #3608 in Cambridge address serious roof issues. Sarnafil RhinoBond Roof System was used on the roof which is approximately 1,200 sqs. Roofing work continues to take place while store operations are being maintained. Mike Rodrigues and his crew drew the assignment and went straight to work to get it done!

PREVIEW OF THE 2015 PAN AM GAMES, ATHLETE’S VILLAGE ■ Submitted by Anthony Rotti

Flynn has had the opportunity to work with EllisDon and Ledcor in the construction of the Athlete’s Village for the 2015 Toronto Pan/ParaPan American Games, located near the Lakeshore, just West of the Don Valley Parkway. This project consists of metal siding, metal roofing, aluminum plate soffit, and most notably Fibre Cement panels on several elevations and for soffit and fascia throughout the building. Flynn has brought in a large crew of men to tackle this project, with around 18-20 workers on-site daily at the peak of construction. The team is led TORONTO by Foreman Tim McCallum with support from Superintendent Jean Bernard, Project Manager Tony Baita, and Project Coordinator Anthony Roti. Despite such a large group, Flynn, specifically the Foreman, has received praise from the EllisDon safety representatives for our conformance with their policies, as well as our diligence in enforcing them. We will strive to maintain this status throughout the duration of the project through effective communication channels on site, and will continue to deliver a finished product which meets or exceeds industry standard. Flynn Sudbury and NFL recently completed a joint project to install curtain-walls and entrances at the renovated North Bay Memorial Gardens arena.

SUDBURY SIDING CREWS HARD AT WORK The re-located Brampton Batallion Hockey Team needed their Fitness and Training room ready by end of August, which only allowed a few weeks to install two pre-glazed walls. NFL provided approximately 3,060 sq. ft. of Flynn’s Series 6350 SSG unitized, pre-glazed curtain-wall. CONDOS WITH CURVES?

Absolute World Towers in Mississauga, more commonly known as the ‘Marilyn Monroe’ towers, was a project completed by Flynn in the fall of 2013 Work included Full Engineering, Development, Fabrication and Installation of Galvanized Structural Steel Column Components on the front Podium Townhouse units of the award winning Absolute World Condo Towers: www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/09/18/absolute-worldtowers_n_3943895.html Work also included development, fabrication and installation of Prefinished Clear Anodized Aluminum Panels to clad the column structures, and cladding of the balcony slabs in a painted aluminum finish. In conjunction with General Contractor Dominus Construction, work was completed by Flynn Ironworkers (Foreman: Joshua Davies, Glazing Superintendent: Robert Hannaford) for erection of Structural Steel components and Flynn Sheet Metal workers (Foreman: Paul Furtado, Metals Superintendent: Rick Lacey) for the cladding of columns. Engineering was completed by Don Delaney and Kai Wang, with technical assistance generously provided by Ruben Khachian (RV Metalware). A few of the many challenges faced included the theft of aluminum panel materials from the jobsite and working on a building which was already occupied. Great job to all involved!

SAFETY PLAN FOR DECK REPLACEMENT

The Sudbury siding crew installing the roof deck and cladding on the new Backfill Plant at Glencore’s Strathcona Mine complex near Onaping, Ontario. This project has been more difficult due to extreme cold weather experienced to date, ranging down to in excess of -30 degrees.

SUDBURY

Steven Xavier, John Sheppard, Amadeo Lara, Mike Correia, Craig Vandermerwe, Mike Palma, Rick Fernandes and Jason Pavao had a very difficult deck replacement project of approximately 8,000 sq. ft. that required roof removal on an area of the ArcelorMittal Plant. A completely rotted deck was replaced, and a new built up Tremco roof system was put back. The project also required a specialized safety plan with input from our project, engineering and safety team. Our special thanks to the crew for an outstanding job following the plan and getting this project complete while keeping everyone safe!

NEW LOOK FOR FLYNN CREW

The GO Pickering Bridge is an ongoing Metals (Aluminum cladding) project. Flynn has completed Metal Deck, Roofing and Glazing. Work also included development, engineering, and fabrication of Kalzip sub-frame clips and development ‘skinning’ of Kalzip aluminum on the outside of the bridge.

This picture was drawn by a young student at an elementary school in Delisle, SK and placed on the company truck seat after school. The roof was being worked on by Saskatoon crew

TORONTO The General Contractor is A-Plus and challenges included completing TPO roofing, Glazing, and Kalzip installation over 16 lanes of highway, and the east railway corridor (utilized by freight trains, and commuter trains). The Edmonton Service Department has been working hard at Cresent Place to complete a much needed re-roof project. Recently shown on Global News Edmonton by Trouble Shooter Julie Matthews, Cresent Place has already been through one re-roof this year that did not work out and even displaced a family. MUNICIPAL HALL GREEN ROOF ■ Submitted by Gary Playsted

PCL and the City of Calgary felt there was only one team to help them with this difficult green roof installation at the Calgary Municipal Hall, Flynn Calgary Branch. What makes this such a unique project is that the system is full of thermal imaging sensors that will collect data on the temperature within the system for researching green roof performance. The original 6800 sq. ft. hot rubber was then exposed, cleaned and had an inverted Tremco TRA roof system installed before the Green Roof Assembly could go down. Unfortunately, mother-nature played with their schedule due to the June flooding, pushing the start back into October. Battling through the elements did not deter Randy Gidilewich and his group as they kept on schedule and have two happy customers.

CNRL (HORIZON) EXTRACTION BUILDING ■ Submitted by Connie Applin

This project was a typical example of a large industrial shed with the usual challenges inherent with this type of work such as handling 33´ long panels weighing approximately 800 lbs., working at heights up to 130 feet. The hidden fastener system adds to the awkwardness with the slightly more intricate lap detail than the standard visible system. The Edmonton Metals Crew of Chris Fleet, Scott Godard, Steve Griffore, Eamonn Phelan, Ryan Godard, Guy Drisdelle, Tim Ward and Steve Bryso got it done though! Great job!

COLLEGE PARK SCHOOL ■ Submitted by Kathy McNeill

In September 2013, Midwest Glazing began work on College Park School in Lloydminster, Alberta. The project consisted of Curtain Wall Framing, Storefront Framing, Doors, All Glass Storefront, Glass Railings and Insulated Translucent Panels. This is the second school Midwest Glazing has done in Lloydminster with the same General Contractor and Architect. TOLKO MILLS ROOF AND DECK REPLACEMENT ■ Submitted by Kelly Malchuk

The Tolko Mills Roof Area 15E Roof and Deck Replacement Project consisted of the removal and disposal of 8,000 sq. ft. of existing SBS roofing and deteriorated steel decking over the process facilities at this pulp and paper mill plant located in Northern Manitoba. Some of the issues were dealing with an unstable substrate and the safety issues related to the potential fall risks involved with the demolition. In order to safely proceed, we engaged a crane and other safety apparatus to allow the crew to be secured at all times from above as well as laterally while under production with this project.

SCOTIA BANK ARROWWOOD ROOF REPLACEMENT ■ Submitted by Mikayla Taverna

The Calgary Service Department was happy to jump in and replace the roof for Scotia Bank and BTC Consulting on short notice. This building in rural Alberta is over 120 years old and was in dire need of protection from the harsh Alberta winter. The uniqueness of this project is identified through the persistence and hard work of the entire crew and Service staff to complete the project during the month of December before the New Year.

FISH CREEK LIBRARY ■ Submitted by Steve Bergqvist

For the Fish Creek Library in Calgary, Alberta, the scope of work was the removal of the existing JSM roof, insulation, z-girts and flatstock to Q-Deck and the installation of DensDeck sheathing, RF200 Bakor Blueskin, hat bar and Kalzip clips, a double layer of Roxul insulation, Kalzip top sheets and all associated flashings, the longest sheet installed was 112'.

Difficulties encountered included a very restricted site in regards to space for materials, weather conditions (heavy rainfall), working from two ropes (fall arrest and restraint) and the fact that this pyramid has a 42 degree pitch. Also, the library remained open throughout the duration of the project, so the general public was in very close proximity to the jobsite throughout the working day, making safety our priority as always. The General Contractor for this project was PCL.

One call from “Love Plus,” an adult novelty store in downtown Regina, came in when a corner of the building’s roof flipped over causing the wood deck to be exposed to the elements as visible in the photos below. The client was understandably in a state of panic, but with the help from the Kelowna crew and a couple of local Regina technicians, the crew was able to successfully provide temporary water proofing repairs. As a result, a thank you card was sent by the client which included a Tim Horton’s gift card. Flynn Industrial has successfully completed 27 Modular Buildings at a facility in Edmonton. The Flynn Crew mobilized to site in February and increased the manpower enabling crews to enclose the modules ahead of schedule. Through great team work amongst the office staff, the shop team and the site crews, Flynn completed their scope of works over two months ahead of schedule. Murray Semeniuk and his crews installed over 172,000.00 sq. ft. of Roof, Wall and Soffit Panel as well as personal doors, roof curbs and ice retention systems, while working with our various sub-contractors who installed Roller Shutter Doors, Computer Access Flooring and Temporary Shipping Walls. Numerous members of the crew received safety awards from our General Contractor for excellence to safety. Great Job Guys!

At Flynn, safety on-site is just as important as safety off-site. On March 4, Evan Jackson (left) and Dominic Piwowarek, two of our Service Technicians at our Regina Branch, were on the way to a job when they witnessed a van sliding at high speed towards another vehicle. Both vehicles were badly damaged. They stopped to call 911 and checked to ensure both drivers involved were okay. Both drivers were shaken but not injured. A thank you email from one of the drivers soon followed!

SASKATOON POWER ISLAND FALLS HYDRO DAM ■ Submitted by Joel Scott

The Winnipeg Roofing department was up to the challenge of replacing over 400sqs of SBS Roofing on an active Hydro Electric Dam in the remote town of Sandy Bay, SK. This project included removing the existing roof down to steel deck, installing new dens deck, self adhered vapour barrier, two layers of iso, soprasmart board and torch cap. Talk about right under the shadow of the tower! This project was so difficult that the BLJC was panicking before we even started on this 17,000 sq. ft. 18-storey tower site. It was no easy task to install a Tremco TRA inverted roof system complete with Solar Reflective Panels, all the while John Greenwood (Foreman) and his group (Mariusz Ruszowcki, Matt Smetaniuk k and Chris Way) were working around concrete demolition crews, with a 1800 lb. vertical lift set up. Despite the variety of pit falls, the project was completed on time and on budget without a hiccup. The onsite Superintendent from Delnor Construction couldn’t have been happier, and forwarded a very nice thank you email as a result.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA CAMPUS OVERHAUL ■ Submitted by Shanna Whately

Midwest Glazing was recently awarded a project at the University of Alberta Campus (Innovation Centre for Engineering) that was originally started by another glazing outfit. Edmonton and NFL branches are working frantically to bring this delayed project back in-line for the clients as well as General Contractor, EllisDon. Working with another company’s shop drawings, filling in the missing details and design elements, working with a system never used before, fixing fabrication errors, removing panels already installed, and fixing outstanding deficiencies are amongst the short list of items Flynn is solving with great success.

Removal of the previously installed panels started in midOctober and the floor slabs are now a sea of frames waiting for remediation. Once remediation is complete the unitized panels will go back on the wall just as shipments from NFL start to arrive to maintain a flow of materials and installation. The project consists of over 3000 unitized panels spread over 43 different elevations. The unique challenges of “fly-by” designs and ductal panels are amongst the new endeavors Flynn will face during this project.

In early September, Sharon Sovak k (VP Finance) visited the oil field sites in Ft. McMurray. Her group, pictured below, was escorted around the Suncor PLT300 Pumphouse by Flynn Industrial Supervisor, Guy Saindon. Guy and his crew were undertaking the installation of approx. 25,700 sq. ft. of foam wall panels and 16,500 sq. ft. of TSR standing seam roof sheets. The next stop was the CNRL extraction building where Supervisor Ryan Godard and his crew had the task of installing 63,000 sq. ft. of fire rated wall panels and 34,000 sq. ft. of standing seam roof. The crews on this project were faced with installing 800 lb. panels using cranes and the Clad Boy Vacuum equipment. The final stop was at the Syncrude, Mildred Lake site where Dave Luscombe and his crew were undertaking the installation of conventional cladding on a time and material basis. It is anticipated that this project will be ongoing until spring 2014. Terry Rideout and his crew are replacing the roof on this building in the old historic section of Edmonton called Strathcona. This is a small but very difficult project. BC HYDRO, PRINCE GEORGE ■ Submitted by Greg Miron

Another BC Hydro building with Omicron! This was a 1.6 million dollar multi-scope job using our metals and glazing crew to complete the skin of a post disaster building. This is one of only a few new generation buildings for BC Hydro in northern BC. The building included the use of a triple glazed high performance curtain wall system, fiberglass thermal clips, and a weather barrier line in behind the cladding assembly. Our team did a fantastic job, with the architect generally reporting no deficiencies and the general contractor, Omicron Construction Management, commending us on our safety, work ethic, and communication on site.

The Province of BC is currently funding Seismic upgrades to vulnerable schools under the Seismic Mitigation Program. Sangster Elementary School is one of the 302 schools that will undergo this upgrading. Several Flynn Canada roofing crews have worked on this project. Extensive coordination by all parties concerned was required to successfully carry out the work at hand due to the nature of the structural upgrades to the roof structure. SEAFORTH CONDOMINIUMS ■■Submitted by Gary Stride

After years of enduring a constantly wet underground parking structure, the tenants of this condominium had enough. A General Contractor was hired to rehabilitate the reinforced concrete structure. The GC removed all of the overlying landscaping and soils from the parkade grade level suspended slab and excavated the soils adjacent to the exterior foundation walls. Our Service crew led by Jeff Thul stepped in after all of the preparation was complete and then installed a torch applied waterproofing membrane to the exposed concrete.

Foreman Geoff Myers and his crew began this re-roof at the beginning of a record breaking foggy weather system which rapidly turned to rain. Hats off to Geoff and the crew for securing exterior quartz lighting to set up on site for early morning starts in order to beat the rain. The project included the removal of the original EPDM system and the application of new insulation and a Soprema SBS system. Way to go, guys!

THE HEIGHTS AT MT. VIEW RESIDENTIAL CARE ■■Submitted by Gary Stride

Upon completion, this new construction seven storey 260 bed Residential Care Facility will help ease a shortfall in the growing need for seniors assisted care in the Victoria region. Flynn Canada’s role in this project is to provide waterproofing to the exterior foundation walls and the new roof. Future tradesmen working on the roof or the exterior of the building will have easy access to over three dozen engineered roof anchors installed on the roof level. Brent Kauffman was hoping that the Hollywood talent scouts would have signed him for a leading role in an upcoming major motion picture after his performances at Victoria’s celebration of 2012 Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award. Rumour has it that Brent even released a copy of the Victoria Blooper Reel video to the producers of Dancing with the Stars in hopes of securing an audition. Unfortunately, as of press time, Hollywood has not come knocking. It looks like you will have to keep your day job!

Congratulations to Flynn Regina — the winners of the 2013 Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award! What exactly does it take to be the safest branch in the country? “The success belongs to everyone here at the branch – it’s not just me. Together we all worked very hard for this. We have buy-in from everyone, especially our core senior guys. Our Safety Specialist, Mark Novecosky, has been a great addition to our organization and with Mark’s expertise, leadership and dedication towards safety we were able ensure a work safe environment and buy in by all employees. Together as a team, we shine brightly and everyone has performed very well and we should all be very proud of our achievement,” said Regina Branch Manager, Stan Maciboric. There are many reasons that motivate crews to achieve success of this magnitude. One reason is getting work! “Being in the heart of the oil patch of Saskatchewan, and the Potash belt, you have to have a strong safety record in order to qualify to even tender some of these projects. For us, to even work on these sites with Sask Power, Mosaic Potash Corp, etc. you have to have a strong safety record – and we do,” said Maciboric. Another main reason, of course, is the safety of eacch and every employee. “We need to stay safe out there so evveryone can head home at the end of every working day,” sa aid Maciboric. “Going back to late ’80s – I remember whe en we enforced that all employees had to wear hard hatts. Some employees decided to leave Flynn and go work w somewhere else where they didn’t have to wear a hard d hat on the roof. Looking back I guess we were just slightly y ahead of time back then. Today – we put on our PPE like putting on our socks in the morning. Safety has come a long way!”

One more reason for motivation to take home the coveted Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award d is planning the celebration and Regina certainly partied in style! They held an award presentation ceremony and dinner at Casino Regina attended by Mr. Don Flynn himself who presented the award. For those who may not be aware, Don Flynn started Flynn and Associates back in 1978 and has many ties to the city of Regina. “The guys really appreciated having Don Flynn present. Some of the guys are newcomers – some have been here for years – a lot of them have never met Don Flynn, so that was a really nice gesture on Don’s part to attend,” said Maciboric. “They were also excited to meet Don’s wife, Iris, and Doug Flynn and his wife, Ally. It was a very special event.” The next morning everyone went to a Tailgate party in Flynn Regina’s back yard for delicious food and drinks. They picked up their customized Flynn Football Jerseys, did a choreographed “Safety Dance” with Doug Flynn (yes…there is a video!), and then boarded a bus headed to Mosaic Stadium where they watched the Saskatchewan Roughriders take on the BC Lions. While the Roughrriders lost by just two points that day (24-22), it’s clear everryone wins when staying safe! For those e planning to win the 2014 Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award, A Maciboric has these words of advice. “Good lu uck! You have to beat us first. We’re not just going for two years in a row – we’re going for a hat trick. In all serioussness, hard work, dedication and buy-in will get it don ne. You cannot put a dollar value on safety.”

The Vancouver crews were faced with the usual challenges and a few more while installing 110,000 sq. ft. of new roof system at Atlas Logistics, a massive food distribution centre in B.C. This project included removing the existing roof down to steel deck, installing new vapour barrier, and a detailed spray foam/Z-bar to incorporate separation for the different temperatures in the rooms below. Crews could then continue reinstalling the new roof system with fully adhered TPO. Underneath the deck, a two-man crew worked out of a boom lift in cold temperatures to ensure that each separate cooler below had the walls spray foamed to maintain continuity with the separation on the roof above.

The Victoria crew did not have far to travel to start work on 6828 Kirkpatrick Crescent as the property lies within metres of the Flynn Victoria office/shop. This re-roofing project on an existing warehouse (soon to be bakery) included roofing around new curbs and some perimeter wall cladding. The Flynn Victoria Administrative team took advantage of the close proximity of this site and carried out an internal site investigation of this project. This multi-scope project consisted of 18,875 sq. ft. of composite panels (1631 pieces), insulation, and 52,900 sq. ft. of profiled metal cladding and 168,400 sq. ft. of SBS roofing. It is currently the largest building under construction on Vancouver Island. Scheduled for completion in 2014, this will be the home base for the Maritime Forces Pacific 443 Helicopter Squadron and will house the proposed new fleet of Sikorsky Cyclone Helicopters. Construction safety is taken to a new level when working alongside side an International Airport adjacent to an active runway. All trades on this high profile site are under the constant watch of the General Contractors Safety program (Knappett Projects Inc.), WorkSafeBC and the Engineering staff of Defence Construction Canada. Shawn Mason and his crew have had several external safety inspections by the Authorities and have performed flawlessly in each and every one of them!

HELP IS CLOSE TO HOME ■ Submitted by Mike Connelly

Kelowna’s Roofing Production Department recently completed a Home Hardware Reroof Project in Penticton, B.C. The 31,400 sq. ft. project required removing the ballast from the existing EPDM membrance that was loose laud on Phenolic insulation on a steel deck. It was replaced it with one layer of 3.25 Poly ISO and Firestone 60 mil TPO InvisaWeld System. We had to repaint areas of the steel deck that had rusted due to Phenolic Corrosion. Great job, guys!

HIGH STREET MALL – REDEFINING CUSTOMER SERVICE ■ Submitted by Kate Larson

Flynn’s Vancouver Business Development team worked with Graham Construction’s project team in defining and pricing seven scopes of work for the building envelope package on Shape Property Management’s High Street Mall in Abbotsford, BC. These efforts resulted in a twelve million dollar multi-scope project for the Vancouver branch. As preparation for the project developed, the end customer stated that mall designs are time-limited and that they wanted to ensure that their design met the latest design trends in North America. With the High Street project, the overall design process was over four years in development with the local municipality and the latest design trends not being met. With that in mind, they started making extensive changes to the exterior finishes of twelve scopes of work with Flynn.

Over the course of the project, the estimating handled was triple the overall contract value in priced changes and variations to these changes. The preparation time for the Project Management team was weeks instead of months vs. what is the normal time frame. In some cases, the field staff even worked with partial information and sketches in order to facilitate the latest client changes on site. Everyone within the Flynn system handled the changes in record timelines and redefined the standards of customer service for sub-trade contracting on this project.

In total, the site manpower base varied as required from a minimum of twenty personnel to a maximum of sixty personnel working on this project at any given time.

The management team, the suppliers and the construction team set a new bar for their customer service on this project. In many cases Flynn directed and pushed the general contractor for areas to be prepared as our construction team received materials for the mall.

VICTORIA CREWS HONOUR DANIEL SADECKI ■ Submitted by Marnie Pullman

Daniel Sadecki, a Metals Journeyman originally from Germany, was sponsored to work here in Canada and was a beloved member of Victoria’s Crew. Sadly, Daniel passed away from Cancer on February 2, 2014. Pictured below is a memorial his crew put together. They all signed his hard hat and put this memorial on the wall at the job site in memory of him. They have also displayed the poem below.

REMEMBERING JOEY READER Joey Reader, our 28 year old Apprentice in the Architectural Metals Department, was employed with Flynn Kelowna since the early stages of the Branch. Joey was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. In February of 2013, the disease progressed into the acute stages and Joey was sent to the Cancer Lodge in Vancouver to await a Stem Cell Transplant. He was fortunate enough to receive this transplant in early April, followed by chemotherapy and few months of close monitoring. Late last summer, Joey was able to return home to reunite with his long time fiancé, Chantal and 2-1/2 year old son, Cruz. They were finally able to tie the knot, and were married in September. Unfortunately, Joey’s health continued to decline. He fought hard against his terminal diagnosis, but passed away on January 4, 2014.

During the course of his battle, Joey and Chantal were in close contact with the Branch, and were and continue to be an inspiration to everyone there. His friendly disposition and positive attitude will be greatly missed both amongst the crews and within the office.

VANCOUVER WHARVES SHED ■ Submitted by Vince Nobert

VANCOUVER

The Vancouver Wharves is a bulk Marine terminal located on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet in Greater Vancouver’s Port Metro Vancouver. The 125 acre terminal handles three million tons of inbound and outbound cargo products annually, both liquid storage and dry bulk. Kinder Morgan, one of the largest energy and resource companies in North America operates and maintains the facility, and in that capacity, has been repairing and upgrading the bulk sheds. On previous projects, Flynn has performed well and cultivated a close relationship with Kinder Morgan. Joe Jackson and Roy Hoyano played significant roles on the previous re-roof, so they were the natural choice to lead the crew on the new project. In June 2013 the Team mobilized.

On Shed #1 (the Copper Shed) Flynn is removing and recladding 123,000 square feet of panel, most of it on the roof. Corrosion is an issue on the North shore, so the 24 Gage panels are Barrier coated to resist the combination of the elements and the chemicals in the shed. In order to safely complete the re-roof Flynn is employing a sloped double swing stage system custom built for this site. Flynn is acting as the general contractor on this project so in addition to overseeing the modification and repair of the steel structure itself, Flynn had to have a horizontal life line system designed and installed on the ridge to safely support the roofing operation. The 4.5 million dollar project is being completed while allowing the facility to remain fully operational; this has created many challenges for the team. Successfully and professionally navigating those challenges in the past and the present has made Flynn the go to company for Kinder Morgan at the Vancouver Wharves.

25 TH VANCOUVER REGIONAL CONSTRUCTION ASSOCIATION The 25th Vancouver Regional Construction Association Awards of Excellence were held on October 17th at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Congratulations to Flynn Canada who won the Gold Award of Excellence in the Chairman’s Trade Category y for the $237 million Fort St. John Hospital and Residential Care Facility project, and the Silver Award d in the Manufacturer and Supplier Category for Broadway Tech 4. More information about each of these projects is below.

VRCA AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE: CHAIRMAN’S TRADE Project Name: Fort St. John Hospital and Residential Care Facility Project Scope: Exterior Glazing / Interior Glazing / TPO Roof / SBS Roof Project Summary: Fort St. John Hospital & Residential Care Facility is a four-story- 49,200 square foot fully functional hospital with a 24,600 square foot adjacent residential care facility located in the North Peace River Region of British Columbia. The site which opened in June of 2012 was built to LEED Gold certification. It is seen as a signature building for all the partners involved and is quickly becoming a central landmark for the City of Fort St. John. The exterior glazing system was designed to withstand the significant temperature variations of the Northern B.C. Climate while maintaining a design standard which would complement the color scheme of the building and surrounding landscape. Keeping the patients of the hospital, its staff, and the medical equipment at optimum & consistent temperatures was the goal of Flynn, Stuart Olson, and the Design Team. This was achieved by means of a successful collaborative effort. The interior glazing components were designed with function and practicality in mind while constructing an esthetically pleasing bright interior to a LEED Gold Standard. The roofing systems were challenging to coordinate given the seasonal conditions of the North Peace Region. The hospital construction schedule required dry conditions to be maintained inside the building while the harsh conditions outside the building made it extremely challenging to construct. Flynn has the highest safety standards in the country. Stuart Olson Construction encouraged safe work practices to be maintained while assisting the site crews in removing obstacles in order that efficiency was considered. As a result, Flynn delivered the project on time and on budget. Flynn had zero time-loss injuries over our 19 month duration. This project was extremely challenging in general due to the extreme temperature variations and landscape challenges of the Region. Having said that; the project construction team at Stuart Olson Construction fostered a tremendously positive team environment for all trade contractors, consultants, and stakeholders. We have not seen this effort in many years and are appreciative of this relationship building effort. At any given time Flynn had anywhere from 10 to 40 tradespeople on site. We would gladly work with this project team at any time.

AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE VRCA AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE – MANUFACTURER & SUPPLIER Project Name: Broadway Tech Centre Building 4 Project Scope: EPDM & SBS Roofing, Metal Cladding, Composite Panels Project Summary: Broadway Tech Centre Building 4 is a four story commercial office building located in Vancouver. It is one of eight buildings planned for the complex. Broadway Tech 4 is currently occupied by HSBC’s Western Canadian management team. Broadway Tech is a high profile campus with other well-known tenants such as: Nintendo Canada, BCLC, Bell Canada. We are excited to have another opportunity to work with SODCL on the next building to be added to the Broadway Tech campus. The project is a LEED GOLD certified building, as are all buildings built and planned in the development. Flynn Canada provided the same scopes of work for all buildings, as testament to the quality and consistent performance provided by Flynn’s team. Broadway Tech is unique in that many of the buildings have slightly different appearances; however most of the buildings have nearly identical base design. This has been done in principal to allow SODCL to drive costs and schedule down for each building. As each building has had a reduced budget and schedule, Flynn’s project management team has had to find unique ways to lower costs through all facets of the project to meet budget. In addition our field forces have been given the challenge of installing the same amount of product with less time each time. This has been achieved using different install sequences, detailing, and equipment. The condensing of the schedule has negatively impacted several of the trades that Flynn interfaces with, which at times has negatively impacted our efficiency Flynn has taken an active role in all of these projects by working closely with the other trades to ensure that they are able to keep ahead of us and at times for Flynn to agree to completing small portions of their scope or changing our details on the fly to accommodate the site conditions. The peak manpower allotment for this project was 14 tradesmen for metal work and roofing combined. Although initially Flynn was asked to add more manpower to help facilitate the delays caused by other trades and the condensed schedule in general, this relatively small crew was able to complete the project on schedule and on budget. We attribute this small miracle to this same crew having worked on Building 5 & 7 previously, and providing products and equipment that made the installation more conducive for speed and quality. y

SURREY CIVIC CENTRE

Located in the heart of the Lower Mainland, the Surrey Civic Centre stands as a monument to the ongoing urban redevelopment of one Canada’s fastest growing municipalities. Flynn Vancouver’s Glazing and Panels divisions joined this effort in November 2012 in great anticipation of overcoming the many challenges inherent to the complex design of this project. And while there were no shortages of these challenges, thanks to the dedicated and collaborative efforts of field staff and the project management team, Flynn is nearing completion of another project in which we can all take pride.

The result of these efforts was the installation of a beautiful exterior curtain wall. Using unitized Curtain Wall, which enables the coupling of frames through methods of installation ranging from spider cranes to hoists, the Flynn team completed the building envelope in a time efficient manner, while upholding the highest safety standards. The Exterior Glazing team Flynn Glazing led by Jeff Anderson. Jeff lent his 15 years of experience to this project and, in doing so, helped overcome many of the obstacles encountered. Jeff was also a terrific mentor to his team; helping mold them into a mature and efficient workforce. Great job Jeff!

While it would be easy to become marred in the many problems that Flynn encountered on this project, the focus of this article is rather drawing attention to our team’s many accomplishments, and the innovative ways they have overcome adversity.

Moving to the interior of the building; Flynn glazing worked to some intense schedules to complete areas utilizing storefront, curtain wall and guardrail systems.

Among the most complex challenges faced by the Flynn team on this project were found in the inner atrium. Due to structural steel and surveying issues at the atrium wall and steel stair case, our team was tasked with going over and above to complete the job. Here, collaborative efforts by both glazing and panel crews rendered a stunning finished product. The Interior Glazing Team

Primarily, we encountered problems while conducting our initial survey. Here, we discovered that the concrete curbs which we fastened curtain wall to were extremely off elevation. The time was then taken to lay out the entire job, leading to the design of a new fastening detail for connecting curtain wall head conditions to out of plumb bulkheads.

Panel crews had equal success, utilizing Accument, channel, and liner wall systems to great effect. And though panel crews encountered their own share of challenges on this site, the end product of their labours speaks for itself.

Special thanks to J.P Schmidt, our Glazing Superintendent. JP has a vast array of knowledge in the glazing industry, and has brought this to the Surrey Civic Centre. He mentored the guys in correct practices, pre-planning and making sure the crews follow the highest standard of safety protocols. FLYNN BEST PRACTICES

ADHESIVE PRIMERS Adhesive primers are used on many different self-adhered roofing and wall vapor barrier systems. While in many cases these are installed using a hand roller and bucket, there are also more mechanized alternatives available.

HAND ROLLING

POWER ROLLER

The most common way of dispensing glue primer is with a hand roller dipped into the bucket and rolled out over the roof or wall. The primer is allowed to flash off and the self adhered membrane is installed.

An improvement on hand rolling, the power roller uses a compressed tank of air or a pump to push out glue into a perforated roller head. This machine more than doubles application rate of primer vs hand rolling.

BETTER SPREADER

SPRAY APPLIED A new system currently being developed by Bakor is a spray applied glue primer. This primer is sold in a pressurized cylinder and dispensed with a hose and gun, similar to instastick roofing foam adhesive. Primer is also available in small spray cans for service and detail work.

The better spreader is available in single and double pail configurations for flat roofing work. To operate, the pail is put in place and holes are drilled into the side of the can. When the cart is flipped over, the glue falls onto the carpet roller dispensing evenly over the roof surface. This is the most efficient way available to spread adhesive primer over a large open roof area.

YOUTH SOCCER TOURNAMENT On behalf of the Darlington Strikers U13 Girls’ Soccer Team, we would like to formally thank Flynn for helping to cover the girls’ soccer costs. The team was fortunate enough to play at the world’s largest Youth Soccer Tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden. Your contribution certainly helped! Pictured right is a team photo taken in Sweden just after the team won the Silver Medal for their age group! There were over 40 teams from around the world in this age bracket alone. It was an experience that the girls will remember for the rest of their lives!

On December 24th, the Saskatoon branch held a pancake breakfast and sold raffle tickets. Branch Manager Vernon Hunt handed out prizes, and the proceeds that totalled $1402.00, was split between the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Cruz Reader Trust Fund! Great job, Saskatoon!
