PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Connecting with YOU! In April, we announced the opening of our newest branch in
Brandon , Manitoba. I would like to welcome our new staff and newly appointed Branch Manager, Darren McCallum , to the organization (see full story in this issue of the Flash). With the addition of Brandon, we now have 18 branches across the country. Our geographic diversity has helped us survive – and even thrive – through the economic downturn of the last few years, and we are now ready to grow again! As valued employees and stakeholders in the company, you should be aware we are in the early stages of developing plans to enter the Commercial Roofing and Roofing Service Markets in the US. While there is still some room for growth in some parts of Canada, we are uniquely positioned to explore significant expansion opportunities that may exist for a company like ours in the US. We have reached the point of advertising and our ad (pictured left) will be appearing in upcoming editions of Professional Roofing Magazine which many of you may read, along with the thousands of Roofing Professionals across North America. We wanted you to see it first! Many of our customers, such as Target and Walmart among many others, have influence on what happens here in Canada. Having a solid relationship with companies such as these on both sides of the border can only benefit us, and continue to separate us even more from those with whom we compete against every day.

T.A.S.K SUBMISSIONS & WINNER TEAMWORK ATTITUDE SHARING KNOWLEDGE
Congratulations to Luc Guilbeault from our Ottawa Branch whose T.A.S.K. submission was a Flynn Safety Mat. Guilbeault says this is a great idea to prevent workers from being exposed to a slip hazard when getting on and off of a ladder in the winter. All that is required is a PVC Magnet Mat with either Sopraguard Tape or Safety Grip Tape as pictured below.
Guildbeault knew the mat was a good idea when people from the branch wanted to know where they could get one. He says it feels good to contribute to the safety of the workers and look after them to make sure there are no accidents. “When you are out in the field working hard, you’re working to earn money and make a better living – not to get injured and reduce your quality of life” he says. “Sometimes there are people who are still a bit resistant to our safety culture, but over time they’ve come up to a new level and it’s really nice to see them get there.” Guildbeault has been with Flynn since 2004 when we started as a Senior Superintendent. In 2006 he was hired to help with Health and Safety and is currently the Health and Safety Specialist for Ottawa/Sudbury. He says he has become more and more passionate about looking after people’s well-being and says it feels good to be able to send ideas to the owners of the company and know they actually see them and read them. “Doug picked my idea, and now everyone will benefit from it. It’s not just an Ottawa thing now. It makes me feel like part of the company.” When it comes to submitting T.A.S.K ideas in the future, Guildbeault says “If I have an idea that can help our company and our workers, I’ll get it in there!” Congratulations, Luc!
FORTIS PLACE A FIRST FOR FLYNN ST JOHN’S ■■Submitted by Sean McWilliam

Fortis Place is a multi-scope project located in the west end of downtown St. John’s, Newfoundland at 5 Springdale Street. Built on the former Horwood Lumber site, the building’s contemporary design pays tribute to the city’s historic downtown residential wood construction. Flynn’s scope of work on this 12‑storey office building covers glazing, metals, and roofing. Glazing will consist of 620 frames of our 6-3/4˝ 6450 Flynn Wall System. Strip windows will include approximately 145 frames of 5-1/4˝ 6350 Flynn Wall System with stick installation at approximately 90 frames of our 5-1/4˝ 6350 Flynn Wall System. There will be doors and hardware installation, a glass canopy, and interior and exterior Balustrade/Handrail Systems. The metals portion will feature approximately 40,000 square feet of Prodema wood paneling, and approximately 3,500 square feet of penthouse cladding, composite accent band and column covers. The roofing scope will consist of 265 squares of modified and green roof. Fortis Place is the first Flynn St. John’s project where Prodema, and the 6450 Flynn Wall Systems are being used.

WHAT’S NEW IN THE PIER, DEAR? ■■Submitted by Jeff Spurrell
Gerard MacNeil and Fernando Richard proudly stand in front of the newly renovated Whitney Pier Pharmasave in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Working with local general contractor JA Borden Enterprises and building designer Stortec, everyone did a great job modernizing the local drug store located in the heart of Whitey Pier. This is very close to the former site of the now defunct Sydney Steel Plant, once the largest steel plant in Canada. The project consisted of a mix of cladding and composite panels in various colors. Good dear, good!

This Irving Paper Mill in St John, New Brunswick was the first project Flynn did for J.D. Irving Ltd. since creating and building upon a new relationship with their group of companies. This project was especially high-profile, since a portion of the work needed to be completed in only five days during a paper machine shutdown!

LONG HAUL IN LONG HARBOUR ■■Submitted by Shawn McWilliam

Building 212 is located on the Port Site of the Long Harbour Processing Plant Project in Long Harbour, Newfoundland. Once in operation, building 212 will be used for concentrating, crushing and grinding limestone for use in producing a marketable nickel product for the mining company Vale. The roof size for this job is 34,000 square feet. The type of system being used for this scope of work is a 2-ply modified torch applied.
After working in harsh conditions for most of the winter, Flynn’s crew completed the roof work at the end of April.
MAJOR ROOF REPLACEMENT/ROOF RETROFITS ■■Submitted by Mark Aguis and Stefano Panarisi
As part of Loblaw’s ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility and in efforts to reduce the environmental impact on their operations, Loblaw engaged Flynn Canada to streamline and expedite the roof replacements and/or roof retrofits on various stores across Ontario. Flynn Canada was first approached in the fall of 2012 and based on strategic locations in Ontario and the ability to share our field work forces, crews have completed 15 stores totaling more than 1,019,262 square feet or 10,193 squares in seven months! Utilizing crews from Toronto, Hamilton, Cambridge, London and Ottawa the work was completed on a very aggressive construction schedule. This was no easy task as all of the stores remained open for business.

The replacement of a roof system is a major undertaking and crews no only had to deal with the usual factors inherent to roof replacements, but they also had to ensure that there was minimal disruption to the stores operation! Flynn would like to commend all of the crews that had worked on the stores!

Maple Leaf Foods is a new construction build on the Hamilton Mountain. The facility is in access of 440,000 square feet, and will hold several food processing lines for Maple Leaf Foods. Flynn has been contracted to supply and install the single-ply roofing system on the building consisting of:

The Toronto Service Crew completed work on a Target store in Ajax, one of seven Targets completed by the Toronto Branch. The pictures below were taken at various stages throughout the project.
• 10 mil poly vapour barrier • 1.5˝ and 2˝ polyiso insulation mechanically fastened • 45 mil TPO membrane mechanically fastened The installation of the single-ply roofing system is no small feat as there are over 2200 penetrations requiring boots, hundreds of mechanical curbs, dozens of units supported on structural steel, and thousands of feet of cable trays and pipe chases. This facility will replace several of the aging Maple Leaf Food Processing Plants, and is one of the largest private new construction projects in the country. This is the second Loblaw’s that had the Kitchener and Hamilton Branches working together. There was great teamwork tearing the old roof system down to the deck and installing a 2-ply mod-bid torch system back. The crew worked with MBC Tarping each day as the store has to be tarped underneath.

Flynn Sudbury is currently completing work at 33 Mackenzie St. (The Sudbury Star). This is a glazed curtain-wall project, where Flynn is supplying new curtain walls to replace existing windows. Hamilton is currently installing a new roof at Bishop Ryan Catholic High School. The job requires a new VVS lightweight concrete pour at 119,221 square feet. It also requires a new venting sheet with 150,000 fasteners along with 2-ply membrane. With the extra manpower from Halifax, they plan to meet their September deadline.

In conjunction with Tambro Construction and Snyder & Associates Architects, Flynn Sudbury recently started work on the Milton Catholic Secondary School set to be completed in time for the first day of school of September, 2013. The job consists of 7700 square feet of corrugated siding (red and silver), 4800 square feet of composite panels (silver, yellow, lime green and orange) and one louver screen (orange).

Along with PCL Constructors, Flynn recently completed a new roofing project of 2-ply Inverted Bituminous Membrane Roof System with SRI white pavers for the Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. With the project located at the base of the CN Tower, there were many challenges to overcome including limited access due to pedestrian, construction and vehicular traffic. Another challenge was the laying out and installation of the two sharks swimming on the roof using low contrast charcoal coloured pavers on the roof. Jose Neiva (Foreman) and his Toronto crew did an exceptional job laying out the pavers as the building footprint was an oddly designed geometrical shape. Great job!

Flynn Sudbury Siding Crews are busy supplying and installing 40,000 square feet of Barrier Series Siding and Roof Decking on the Vale Copper Cliff Smelter Convertor Aisle Extension with E. S. Fox Limited. The duration of the project is two months.

REMOVING AND REPLACING Don Dadson and his crew are currently completing a project at StorageMart in London. The job consists of removing an existing roof system and replacing with a Single-Ply Rhinobond TPO roof system of approximately 406 square feet. The crew is under a tight timeline as roofing must be completed on schedule so that the Solar Panels can be installed. Keep up the good work, guys!

TOUGH MUDDER CHALLENGE IS MUCKED UP Imagine crawling through a giant mud puddle of live wires, some carrying as much as 10,000 volts of electric shock? How about sprinting up a quarter-pipe coated in mud and grease or plunging into ice water? These obstacles also known as “ElectroShock Therapy”, “Everst” and the “Artic Enema” are just three of 25 obstacles along the 16 kilometer stretch also known as the Tough Mudder. The Tough Mudder was originally designed by British Special Forces to test strength, stamina, mental determination and camaraderie. It also raises money for the Wounded Warriors of Canada – a notfor-profit charity that supports Canadian Service Members and Veterans wounded overseas. In May, our two Flynn Teams pictured below made their way through the mud, blood and finally the beer and completed the Tough Mudder held in Mount St. Louis Moonston, just north of Barrie, Ontario. The project consists of both a new roof and a re-roof portion of approximately 84 squares each. The new addition over the Kindergarten room was completed the first week of July and the reroof project will be complete shorty after. The system is a 3-ply Mod Bit adhered with asphalt.

Rui Medeiros’ Crew is completing a $2 million dollar Mod Bit roofing system project on the new St. Joseph’s Regional Mental Health Care London facility. The system consists of 70 different roof levels, with 14 different roof types and is over 1300 square feet! This project is in conjunction with EllisDon.

The Navan Memorial Center in Ottawa has undergone a total renovation inside and out. The Winnipeg Branch teamed up with PCL and completed its first total multiscope project on the Prairie Arctic Regional Council of Carpenters Lathers, Millrights & Allied Workers (PARC) Office. The scope of work consisted of steel roof deck, metal cladding & soffit, Acumen 2000, modified bituminous roofing, aluminum curtain wall and glazing and glass handrails. This was the first large glazing project Winnipeg has secured since opening a glazing division late last year. Way to go, Winnipeg! The new 91,500 square foot catholic school/ public school combination is an LEED project with the new 2-ply SBS system covering multiple roof areas. With Swift Current being one of the windiest areas in the province, conditions posed certain challenges for the crew. They were also dealing with a shortage in manpower, but now Rob Johnston and his crew are moving along. Great job, guys! RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER Manny H. DeSousa has been with Flynn Canada’s Toronto Branch for a little more than eight years now. “We’ve gone from the not knowing if we were going to be able to fill the office at 6300 Northam Drive, to bursting at the seams. There are new people joining the company all of the time. Overall, it’s been a very good experience,” he said when reflecting on his time with the company thus far. Over the past few years, DeSousa has done a great deal of reflecting in his personal life as well. In July, 1998 he was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma or, cancer of the immune system. “It was a very big shock – I thought it was a death sentence,” he said about the day when he received the information 14 years ago. “I was feeling down and depressed wondering ‘why me?’ But I knew I couldn’t give up. There is a mental battle that needs to be won. Treatments give you a beating, but if you let it get to you – it’ll knock you down. I was ready for the fight.” After three months of radiation treatments, DeSousa was on the road to recovery. He went for follow up checkups over the next five years, after which time, the visits to the doctor became fewer and further between. 10 years later in 2008, DeSousa lost his father to cancer. That’s when the opportunity to participate in the inaugural Ride to Conquer Cancer presented itself. (In 2011 it became known as the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer when they signed on as a national sponsor). He dedicated the bike ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls to his father and carried his picture over the 225 kilometers on his back and across the finish line – his tribute, time and effort raising both awareness and funds to help find a cure for this devastating disease. The following two years, he entered the Ride once again before deciding to take one year off. During that year, DeSousa lost both his childhood friend and his cousin to cancer and it wasn’t long before he was back on his bike. He dedicated his fourth Ride in 2012 to his cousin, and unbeknownst to him at the time – he would be dedicating his fifth Ride in 2013 to his own battle.

In November, 2012 DeSousa was told his cancer of the immune system was back, now more aggressively diagnosed as Stage 2. A tumor was surgically removed, he underwent radiation treatments, and three months of chemo injections followed. He has started going for full body systemic radiation treatments, three times per week for the next six months. He is feeling positive and optimistic that things will go well. “There have been big advancements in treatments, patient care, methods, and wait times since the last time around” he said. “That first battle was a bit of a learning curve for me. This time, I’m ready for the fight and say bring it on!” This time, Manny has even more motivation than ever before. Their names are Sheila (his wife), his daughter Raquel, 6, and son Elijah, 4. “We recently attended a function and I was dancing with my daughter and she looked up at me and asked me ‘will we do this again?’ I told her yes we will,” said DeSousa. “I want to dance at my daughter’s wedding – I want to hold my grandchildren in my arms. I believe my kids need their dad around for a while longer and that keeps me fighting every day. I keep making plans for the future. I’m still not sure what I want to be when I grow up,” he said jokingly. When asked if his children understand what he is going through, DeSousa said Raquel has a little more understanding and wanted to find a way to help so she grew, cut and donated her hair to make a wig for a child battling cancer and raised $465.00 for the cause at her school during the process. He also said they know they lost their grandfather to cancer, they ask questions about life and death, and they know that Dad is sick and that sometimes Dad is too tired to play.
FLYNN IN TOP 40! While the disease and rigorous treatments cause DeSousa’s body to feel weak and tired at times, it’s obvious his strong spirit has no limitations. During his fifth Ride to Conquer Cancer this past June 8 and 9, he finished the entire 225 kilometer trek. “When I was training, I would hit the 70 kilometer mark and I would be struggling. I would tell myself just one more kilometer and I’ll be closer to home. On day one and two of the event, I didn’t have any pain and felt totally energized. Everyone had placed so much faith in me and gave such kind words, donations and support. There was just so much positive energy that the kilometers just clicked away,” he said. Not only did DeSousa complete the entire course, but he managed to raise over $14,600 exceeding his goal of $10,000 and his team of 14 who called themselves the “The Flynn Flyers” raised an impressive $56,000 nd shattering their goal of raising $44,000 placing as the 52 overall highest fundraising team in the event. To top it off, the 5020 cyclists who took part raised a Canadian record $19,100,000.

“It’s pretty cool to have been a part of this. I feel like I am giving a little something back and helping society as a whole. My hope and desire is that we find a cure so that our kids won’t ever have to go through the things I, and a lot of other people out there, go through. “ With training and fundraising off of his daily schedule, DeSousa is now going to focus on his health and spending time with his family. When it comes to advice to someone receiving a cancer diagnosis, DeSousa says “It’s normal to feel depressed but don’t get discouraged and stay positive. This is a mental battle as much as a medical one. Surround yourself with positive energy, do the things that make you happy and, hug and kiss the ones you love every day.”

Flynn Canada was entrusted with the re-roof of the oldest power plant still in operation on the Winnipeg River. Originally built in 1926, the plant is getting a complete re-roof so that it can continue to produce its annual generation of 599 million kilowatts.
Jarek Rzedzian and his crew are up to the task of safely re-roofing this plant so that Manitoba is able to keep their lights on and they’re working hard to keep all debris from entering the Winnipeg River. DAM ROOF UPGRADES ■■Submitted by Mark Novecosky
Boundary Dam Power Station Boiler House is a high-profile industrial site with over 2000 workers with a new $1.3 billion dollar carbon capture project being built here. It’s the largest coal-fired power generation plant in the province located near Estevan in Southeast Saskatchewan. There are no trees, but plenty of wind which can sometimes be challenging for the crews. This is a busy oil and gas part of the country with zero accommodations available, so the guys have been staying in an all-inclusive camp that houses a gym, recreation room, video games room and all you can eat.
Regina and Brandon each have a crew here along with a full time Project Manager working on 495 squares of torch applied SBS system, with all insulation layers asphalt applied (rooftop kettle is 190 feet in the air). The Brandon men had literally just come on board when we asked them to help supply manpower and a great bunch of guys came and worked together with Regina as if they've been working together for years. Great job, guys!

The Service Crew in Saskatoon is working on 1200 square foot re-roof on residential property. It involved the installation of 1˝ Iso, mechanically attached and installation of 60 millimeter EPDM membrane (fully adhered) This property is in Saskatoon along the South Saskatchewan River. The client/customer is the home owner and owns commercial property in the city which has been worked on by Flynn in the past. In a community small enough that word of mouth is still an effective form of advertising, the relationship Saskatoon has with their customers is very important. Kerry Beamish and his crew, having a strong sense of the importance of customer service/ relations, were able to complete this project leaving the home owner very satisfied with the results and appreciative of how the Flynn employees conducted themselves. Ashley Grant came to the office on Thursday, June 27, 2013 with a mission to collect as much money as she could. She heard about a fundraiser CISN Country 103.9 was putting on. They were looking for donations of bottled water to take down to Calgary to help with the thousands of people affected by severe flooding. In just five hours she raised $450 allowing her to buy 60 cases of water, for a total of 2100 bottles of water! Great Job, Ashley! Flynn Canada would like to extend their thoughts and sympathies to the family and friends of Alan Hawkins from Flynn Calgary’s Branch. Alan was a family man first and put his wife, Lisa and kids, Louis and Lauren above all. He had worked hard as a roofer his whole life and took over his family company in England. As the years passed Alan and Lisa saw an opportunity to change their lives and have a better future for their kids in Canada and made the brave decision to pack up their lives and move here. Within two years Alan had worked his way into a Superintendent position and took great pride in being part of Flynn. He was a hard, dedicated worker always striving to find ways to make things better. He loved to have fun and travel. Any opportunity he got to take his CALGARY family camping, on a cruise or just spend time with family and friends in the backyard was where he was happiest. During the course of his illness, Alan’s pride and dedication was something that all of us that knew him will never forget and always look up to. He continued to remain actively at work during his treatments and even once he was not physically able to be in the office he always kept his phone at hand to answer a question or forward a sarcastic remark! His work ethic, wit, sense of humour and dedication is greatly missed by all of us.

ROCANVILLE POTASH MINE
KEYS TO THE HOTEL

Flynn Edmonton was awarded a contract for installing 6000 square feet of cladding at the Rocanville Potash mine in Saskatchewan. The scope consisted supplying and installing barrier series liner cladding to the inside of an existing building to avoid debris build up on the girts. Crews were confronted with were numerous pipes and cable trays that restricted access and 135 foot high walls. Saskatchewan is renowned for its high winds; however, this is one job that was not affected. All of the work was internal and originally planned to commence in September 2012 but when it was delayed until March, 2013, workers were faced with external temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius instead which probably increased by a few degrees inside the building. It’s not often you hear workers wishing it was winter! Good job!
The Winnipeg Roofing Division was hired to install the new modified Bituminous Roof System on the Waterfront Hotel which overlooks the Red River. The 120 square foot roof system consisted of a Kraft VB on hollow core concrete, fully tapered EPS system, ½˝ fiberboard and base sheet all mopped down. The finishing touch was a grey cap sheet torched down with an additional lawyer of black cap sheet to give the appearance of piano keys! Flynn Edmonton’s Branch is not actually located in Edmonton but located 20 kilometers outside of the city in the small industrial community of Acheson, Alberta. With Acheson’s constant growth of businesses throughout its two commercial phases, the demand for a Fire Department spawned the construction of the first ever Acheson Firehall. Edmonton’s Roofing Division is currently installing the Firehall’s SBS roof system. Earning top credits earned him a $1,000 cheque, tools worth approximately $600, and a two-night stay at the Reindeer Rampage - The Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia’s Annual Awards Lunch and Member Christmas KELOWNA Party. “It’s rewarding to be recognized for what I do on a daily basis. It gives me more confidence in my skills and in the people who have been training me well. I know I am on the right path in the industry with Flynn, “said Vandale.
“The on-the-job safety and the quality of the job is not as strong at other companies as it is at Flynn. They helped me gain advantage over people from other companies taking the course. BC HYDRO DELAYED BUT FLYNN GETS THE JOB COMPLETED ON TIME

The new Surrey Civic Centre is an $11.4 million dollar, Multi-Scope Project for the Flynn Vancouver Branch. The Vancouver Glazing Crews were working hard installing the Flynn Unitized Curtain Wall System.
BC Hydro is a $1.6 Million multi-scope project, located in the northern part of Maple Ridge near the lower toe of Alouette Lake. The project consisted of both SBS and standing seam roofs.

The most challenging part of the project was the barrel roof, where the lower leading edge transitioned from an insulated SBS assembly to a standing seam un-insulated overhang. The 454 penetrations for the snow guard system was no small feat either. Besides having to line up the tubing of the guard, with an uneven roof substrate, each penetration had to receive a heat shrink seal.

With a later start by the GC than originally anticipated, the SBS portion of the roof slid into October and November and the team worked hard to use every hour of fair weather to complete the torching work. The metals team as well had their challenges, slippery sloped decks in the cool mornings, complex flashings at the leading edge of expansion joints, and as well a snow fence. The team did an awesome job, the client was pleased, and they hit the mark and turned over their portion of the project on schedule. Great job, guys! 
HUSKY GAS STATION RE-ROOF ■■Submitted by Bruce Iles
The Vancouver Service Department was called upon to replace the roof on a Husky Gas Station located in Surrey, British Columbia. The crew had to battle with rain during the process which delayed the job for weeks. At the end, the job was completed thus leaving another Flynn Customer Satisfied.

VANCOUVER SERVICE GLAZING: CLIMBING TO NEW HEIGHTS
HILLSIDE MALL REDEVELOPMENT

This multi-scope project in Victoria, British Columbia is entering its second year. Like many of Victoria’s other projects, there is a high level of public exposure on this site. The development includes renovations to the existing mall and new construction in the expansion phase. Multiple Flynn crews have worked on this site with current crews being led by Darren Nancarrow and Jason O’Hanley.
On March 6, 2013 BLJC contracted Flynn Vancouver Service to investigate an on-going leak issue at a 9th Floor office window that they believed was in-accessible. Vancouver Service Glazing Technician Robert Proulx (with the repelling expertise of AllWest) went where few men have gone before by repelling down four stories in between Sun Shades to both access and assess the ongoing leak issue. Using Full on Mountain Climbing Gear, our brave technician gave a new meaning to “success under pressure” by finding, making permanent repairs, and solving the Mt. Everest sized leak issue all while hanging from ropes. Great job Rob and keep up the good work!

BELLA BELLA COMMUNITY SCHOOL CREW CONQUERS TOUGH CHALLENGES ■■Submitted by Gary Stride

Wahib Othman and his crew at Flynn Victoria, have been working on the Bella Bella Community School on the North Central Coast of British Columbia for almost six months. Bella Bella is the sole community on a small KITCHENER island in the heart of the Spirit Bear country.
The Spirit Bear or Kermode is a black Bear that, due to a genetic twist in their DNA, produce white offspring. The island is accessible by once weekly BC Ferry service and almost daily air connections making the logistics quite difficult. The scope of work here involves the removal of the existing roof, often revealing extensive structural decay beneath and then reroofing in the snow, torrential rains and at times near hurricane force winds. Areas of work are frequently put on hold until approvals/instructions and Engineering is obtained from afar. All materials/ tools and supplies are barged to the site, an eight hour journey from Northern Vancouver Island. Crews are lodged on an adjacent island and at times are unable to go to work as the seas are too high for safe voyage. The crew comes here for weeks at a time leaving their families behind. FLYNN VANCOUVER RACES TO COMPLETE PORSCHE CENTRE ■■Submitted by Gary Stride
Dilawri Group, the largest automotive group in Canada, owns and operates over 46 dealerships representing 29 automotive brands in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. They recently appointed Ledcor Construction Ltd. as the General Contractor for their Porsche dealership in Vancouver. Flynn went through the bidding process and was successful in securing the metal wall cladding and the composite wall panel scope of work. This project had some interesting requirements which necessitated the introduction of a galvanized adjustable thermal clip girt system to minimize the heat transfer across the building wall. The design was initially submitted for structural engineering review. The next step was to preassemble the girts at the Vancouver shop in a controlled environment prior to shipping to site. The Flynn site crew then went to work, attached the pre-assembled girt system to the wall, adjusted it to the required wall depth, concreted the wall contour and proceeded with the cladding and panel install with minimal shimming. This resulted in a reduction of install time, increase in productivity and facilitating the attainment of required schedule. The Flynn crew mobilized to site in early March and as more areas become available, they ramped up the volume of work required to be performed within the time frame required for the client to take possession of the building. Through great team work amongst the office team, the shop team and the field crew, Flynn is on track to meet its contractual obligations!

SURREY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL TAKES TEAMWORK ■■Submitted by Rey Medina
The Surrey Memorial Hospital Project in British Columbia started in July 2012 and was completed on June 30, 2013. In conjunction with General Contractor, EllisDon – this multi-scope project required use of the Flynn Wall, Prodema Panel and Acumen, and Nupress Spider Fittings. This project was a great example of the benefits of Flynn’s geographic locations. Flynn Toronto did the Tower and Podium, shop drawings, fabrication, assembly, and glazing unitized frames, and shipped fabricated frames to the site by VIA Rail. The Flynn Vancouver Shop assembled and glazed some of the podium frames and Flynn Edmonton did the fabrication of Acumen Panels and shipped fabricated panels via truck. Great work, everyone!

At Flynn Victoria, Chris Sitter and his crew removed the existing roof and re-roofed Eastgate Square without the usual annoyance of the west coast winter and spring rains. Portions of the deck were found to be in distress at the time of tear off and these areas were addressed quickly. The location of the roof access hatch to the stairway created a fall hazard due to its proximity to the leading edge. Upon completion, permanent engineered guardrails were installed at the hatchway providing future safe access to all those required to carry out service work on the roof. LOOSE SCREWS AND PLATES
The OMG Accutrac, Accuseam and Rhinotrac screw guns are a standup screw gun using loose screws and a feeding system to load plates into position. As the operator walks, he drops a new screw into the top chute and the gun automatically feeds in a plate. This system requires a special accutrac or accuseam plate with standard roofing screws. Standard Rhinobond plates work in the Rhinotrac Gun.
Using loose screws and plates is a common way of securing insulation and single ply seams. Plates are laid out on the surface with a second installer following with screws and a drywall screw gun or drill. This method will work on any job but bending over all day is hard on the roofer’s back and is slower than the stand up systems.

Wall Insulation Securement SECURING INSULATION Securing insulation to the wall is a labor intensive process. With stick pins the pin either needs to be secured to the wall using a screw, laminated with sopraseal membrane or stuck using tactoo adhesive (48 hour cure time). These pins can fall off after the wall system is installed, leaving gaps in the insulation and a loss of heat in the building.
The screw setter is used to set the screw into the insulation. A second person comes with the tallboy screwgun to screw the plates down. This two man operation is very fast and can be completed without the installers needing to bend over.

TRUFAST PA TOOL SCREWGUN This screw gun is similar to the OMG Tallboy except that it is a single man operation. Notice the white cup on the end of it with three magnets which attach to a preassembled screw’s metal plate and holds the screw in place. Flynn has modified this gun, adding the black handle making it easier to operate.

As an alternative to stick pins, the Ramset Insulfast System can install insulation securement pins into solid concrete, solid masonry, cinderblock walls or metal studs. This system is compatible with EPS, XPS and rock wool insulation in thickness up to 6”, installing up to four times faster than traditional stick pins.
