PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Connecting with YOU! Recently I attended the Victoria Branch’s Winning Celebration of the 2012 Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award (which you can read more about in this edition of Flash). Having the opportunity to be part of an event like this where I get to talk to our field guys and their wives about what winning this award means, really shows me how much we’ve changed over the years and truly embraced our Safety Culture. Everyone’s hard work, active involvement in our Safety initiatives, and teamwork, have really raised the bar and made this award more difficult to win. That means we’re getting better and better every day, and that’s great to see. Safety is, and will always be our #1 Cultural Priority. That being said, I want to talk to you all about a topic that you might not think much about – but is a topic that the actions of our field forces have direct impact on. That topic is INSURANCE. Without getting too far into detail, I’d like to give you all a basic understanding of how your actions can affect the company’s cost of insurance. First of all, just like all construction companies we compete with, we cannot do business without insurance. Nobody can. It works like this: Insurance companies look at different industries – in our case the Roofing, Cladding, Glazing, Industries – and they share or pool the cost of all insurance claims in that industry in exchange for premiums. Their objective is to take in more money in premiums than they have in claims cost. Obviously their objective is to make a profit. Now, it’s important to understand that all companies in any given industry are not treated equally. Those with higher claims experiences pay higher premiums for their insurance. In some cases, if a company’s claims experiences are really bad, their cost of insurance can be so expensive that it becomes difficult to compete. One of the reasons that I wanted to share this with you, is that every once in a while our industry experiences some catastrophic claims that serve as a walk-up call. This year there have been two major fires on roofs in Canada, which were NOT Flynn projects. One was at a food processing Plant in Winnipeg, and the other was at a Manufacturing Facility in Toronto.

Both of these claims are still under investigation, but are believed to be claims that will both exceed $10 million dollars in claims cost. This is a significant event for our industry. We have many types of risk in our business, but I have always thought that the biggest one from a catastrophic point of view is the risk of Fire. Every day, we have hundreds of workers lace up their boots, spark up their torches and start working. We have done all the training and all the due diligence that can possibly be done to ensure our workers are capable of doing their jobs in a safe manner, but “complacency” might just be our biggest enemy with these efforts. So what can we do? We must raise awareness about the risks of “complacency” when dealing with open flame work, through training, retraining, tool box talks, etc., to ensure that Fire prevention and safe work practices aren’t taken for granted. The best tool for this is LEADERSHIP! For you veteran construction workers across the company, this is the time to lead. Until next time – stay safe.

George Murray and Rob Franklin had just arrived at the Manheim Water Treatment Plant near Kitchener, ON at around 1:00 pm to install cap flashing for a re-roof completed three weeks prior. When they made it up to the roof they noticed the generator stack was very hot, and the roof surrounding it was very spongy. That’s when the day took a turn.

TOP SECRET The Canadian Forces Ammunition Depot in Bedford, informally referred to as the "Bedford Magazine", is a major Canadian Forces property occupying the entire northern shore of the Bedford Basin. The aging BM-40 Explosive Storage Facility is getting a facelift, covering the one foot thick concrete walls in corrugated cladding. Pictured below, Foreman Paul Barton of the Halifax Branch and his crew leave a lengthy military site orientation covering everything from explosions to deer ticks. With strict security measures in place on this project (we are unable to provide a picture of the building itself), this should prove to be an exciting challenge to complete.

PLEASANTVILLE CONSOLIDATION PROJECT IN ST. JOHN’S The Pleasantville Consolidation Project involves the construction of a new multi-purpose facility which will replace 16 existing Department of National Defense buildings located across the Pleasantville area of St. John’s. The facility will be comprised of operational training space, offices, classrooms, special medical and dental facilities, and warehouse space. The St. John’s Branch scope of work for this project consists of 35,000 sq ft of roofing spread out over five different roof levels. This will also be Flynn’s first time working with general contractor Bird Construction in Newfoundland.

DEDICATED FREDERICTON CREW The Moncton Branch has a permanent work force based in Fredericton NB. UNBELIEVABLE INSTALLATION FEAT ON TRINAV BUILDING IN ST. JOHN'S In only two days, a Toronto Branch crew working on the supply and install of Flynn Curtain Wall installed 100 modules on a commercial office building in St. John's, NF (Developer - Trinav). On day one they installed 52 unitized curtain wall modules, followed by 48 the following day. This is an incredible achievement, and we would like to thank the crews for all of the hard work and dedication it took to make this happen. What a feat! The scope of work for this project consists of the supply and install of Flynn Curtain Wall (approximately 21,677 sq ft), Composite Panels, and Roofing to be carried out by the St. John's Branch.

GREAT WEATHER HELPS GET THE JOB DONE EARLY Very nice and cooperative summer weather in Charlottetown, PEI helped make this new construction project a success! This Moncton Branch crew took advantage of the great weather when laying the new roof on the Spring Park Elementary School and managed to get the job done ahead of schedule. Great work guys!

UPGRADING THE SAINT JOHN, NB HARBOUR FRONT
WWI CHURCH RECEIVES MUCH NEEDED UPGRADES
The Moncton Branch has been working on the expansion and upgrade of the Saint John, NB harbour front area. One of the many projects underway is the New Cruise Ship Terminal Building. With the first cruise ship scheduled to dock in the mid-September, Foreman Roger Leblanc and his crew did a great job completing the new roof installation on a tight schedule. Excellent work guys!
The First Metropolitan Church in downtown Victoria is undergoing a sizeable upgrade. This church first opened its doors the very same year World War One began. Fortunately, the war has long passed and this building is entering its second century of service to the community. Mark O’Hanley of the Victoria Branch is leading the way on this project. The steep slopes, summer weather conditions, presence of employees, building tenants and clients has added to the complexity of the work. Loading and unloading of the roof has also posed big challenges due to busy streets, adjacent power lines and minimal space around the building to locate the crane. In spite of the obstacles, the crew is doing a fantastic job. Keep up the good work men!

MULTIPLE PHASE EXPANSION ON 40 YEAR OLD MALL VICTORIA
The 40 year old Hillside Mall in Victoria, BC is currently undergoing a multiple phase expansion which is expected to take about two years to complete. Foreman, Wahib Othman of the Victoria Branch is leading the charge on the first phase of the expansion. The beginning scope of work consists of applying a hot rubber membrane to an existing reinforced concrete suspended parking slab. The crew is off to a great start. Keep up the good work, men! MASSIVE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT ON VANCOUVER ISLAND Victoria Branch has started a project at the Capital City Centre site in Colwood, a municipality in the Greater Victoria Area. The project is a new roof on a Sales Presentation Centre. This development has been in the planning stages for six years and will have a build out of twenty years over several phases. The total project has an estimated cost of $1 billion; with Phase 1 currently underway. The Presentation Centre is located on the lower left corner of this concept scene. The Esquilmalt Naval Base, home of the Maritime Pacific Forces lies across the harbour, and downtown Victoria is in the background to the right of the centre. Fort Rodd Hill, a National Historic Site is located out of view behind the tower on the right. Situated on 14 acres of land, this project will be the largest development on Vancouver Island consisting of 2200 residential units, commercial, retail, office towers and a public plaza. The residential units will range from two storey townhomes all the way to 12 towers between 16 and 29 storeys. The plaza will host public events and will have fountains, restaurants and public seating. Green roofs and energy efficiency will be a cornerstone of this project. With hard work, dedication and experience, Flynn Canada is well positioned to play a significant role in this development. BUILDING OF THE YEAR CONTENDER The UBC Earth Systems Sciences Building located on the University of British Columbia Campus is being considered for Glass Canada Magazines Building of the Year for Engineering & Design Ingenuity. The Vancouver Branch’s Jeff Ferrey and Brian Romanchuk utilized the vast knowledge and expertise from the Toronto Branch by Brainstorming with John Spadaro to design a system that would support glass and aluminum sunshades with heavy loads directly off our Curtainwall Mullion. Stone Panels were also installed and will be used as a teaching tool for future Students of UBC. The glazing crew shown in the photo (along with Flynn Vancouver's Drafting & Fabrication Team) successfully built and installed the glazing system within the construction schedule, completing a milestone project for the Vancouver Glazing Division. Well done Team!

GREAT FEEDBACK ON HONDA POWERHOUSE Earlier this summer, the Kelowna Branch spent some time working on the new Honda Powerhouse project. Led by Ted Ponting (Foreman), the crew had to install aluminum composite panel above the main entrance and the back side of the building, as well as install custom made corrugated siding band with a red aluminum composite stripe around the building. Flynn received several compliments about the crew’s excellent workmanship from the General Contractor and by the Owner himself. Ted Ponting also did a great job teaching and sharing his expertise with the younger workers on site. Keep it up, men!

FOREVER CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE OF SURREY, BC The Vancouver Branch has been hard at work on the Surrey Memorial Hospital expansion (a $10.8 Million Multi-Scope Project). The project incorporates a unique mix of Architectural Products, Custom Glazing, and Metals products. This Project has proven to be an excellent example of the value we offer our customers as a full building envelope contractor. We have successfully shown our customer how Flynn is able to utilize its highly recognized teams from coast to coast in order to meet all of their needs. The Surrey Memorial Hospital expansion promises to be an innovative architectural landmark that will forever change and beautify Surrey, B.C. Although the Project is just ramping up, Flynn teams are already able to see the impact of their quality work on the landscape. WORKING WELL UNDER PRESSURE The Kelowna Branch has been working on the BC Hydro – Peace Canyon Dam, a multiscope project located in Northern British Columbia. This massive project includes Glazing, Metals, and a Re-roof of the Visitor’s Center and Power-House Dam. The roofing team led by Justyn Barber (Foreman) has worked well under the extreme pressures of tight schedules, harsh weather conditions, environmental concerns, and power KELOWNA outages. Alongside the glazing contractor our metals team consisting of Lamont Martel, Nik Salas, and Dave Richardson have put their best foot forward in the coordination and installation of this challenging project. All three disciplines have worked extremely well with the Health and Safety Team crafting ideas for systems and processes, procedures, safety plans and managing a minimal amount of minor incidents throughout the project. GOOD THINGS HAPPEN WITH GREAT TEAMWORK The Vancouver Branch is hard at work on the Oakridge Crate & Barrel multiscope project with PCL. The project consists of SBS membrane roofing, Accumet 2000 architectural panels, Swisspearl fiber cement wall cladding, thin brick wall veneer cladding and curtain wall glazing.

The first scope is well underway, with crews having already installed the Flynnwall system. The material was custom painted in Toronto and shipped to Vancouver for fabrication and installation. The field crew is making excellent progress already and is on track to finish the first phase of the project on schedule. They would like to tip their hard hats to the Vancouver Fabrication shop and the office team including Andy Yim (Drafting), Fernando Radueor (Drafting), Jason Cook (Glazing Superintendent), CJ Howie (Metals Superintendent), Del Hernandez (Project Coordinator) and Jose “Speedy” Goncalves (Project Manager) for all of their support. ALL IN A DAY’S WORK The Victoria Branch overcame some unique challenges while doing an 1100 square re-roof of an old military warehouse that had been turned into University Trades Training Centre. After being awarded the job, the Branch was informed that asbestos was detected in a sample of the original roof. An elaborate Exposure Control Plan had to be developed by the Health and Safety Team, along with Senior Management, Superintendents, the Foreman and the crew in a very small time frame. Chris Sitter (Foreman) and the crew reviewed and implemented the procedures while the Branch took a proactive approach by inviting a Work Safe BC Industrial Hygienist to visit the site during the start-up phase. Further tests were submitted for laboratory analysis throughout the projects development, which is an approach rarely seen in the roofing industry. In spite of the obstacles, this diligent crew pulled through on a very tough project and did an excellent job. Way to go!
$48-MILLION CENTRE RISES OVER BEDFORD-HAMMONDS PLAINS The Halifax Branch metals division started work on this large project with PCL back in July. Foreman Robert MacKinnon and his crew have been busy preparing the walls to install metal siding, Solarwall and composite panels, all of which will be in a dazzling array of colors. The threestorey academic centre will feature a mix of classrooms, an art room, two multi-purpose recreation rooms and an exterior recreation area. The school is located just up the street from another high-profile project completed by Flynn Canada Ltd; the Research in Motion building completed by the glazing division. BIG ENDEAVOUR ON THE NEW WATER TREATMENT PLANT
HAPPY CUSTOMERS BACK AGAIN
This Edmonton Branch glazing crew began construction on the new Water Treatment Plant in Fort McMurray early in the summer, with plans to be completed by fall. The crews are working on three buildings during this time with the biggest endeavor being the Operations Building consisting of bronze anodized triple-glazed high performance Curtainwall, punched windows, doors and interior glazing. Roofing crews have mobilized and green roofing crews will begin on the job in early spring. Excellent job to the crews so far, and keep up the great work!
The Calgary Branch was once again chosen by Maple Leaf Property Management to carry out the installation of a 26,700 sq ft cold applied inverted Tremco roof system. This will be the third phase of this project that Randy Gidilewich and his crew have been involved in, which when completed will total 114,400 sq ft of roof replacement on the Harry Hays Building. Thanks to this crew’s high quality workmanship and excellent customer service Flynn was selected for all three phases of this project. Excellent work men!

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES TO MAKE THE CUSTOMER HAPPY The Calgary Branch was contracted by Great West Life Realty Advisors to replace 2700 sq ft of the roof on their 23rd floor and 1000 sq ft of roof on their 3rd floor with a Tremco cold applied inverted roof system. This project is located in the core of downtown Calgary and logistics were a major issue as all materials and debris had to be transported to the roof areas through the building and offices. James Pyykonen and his crew accepted the many challenges that this project entailed and fought through these issues without incident by working some very unusual hours and doing whatever it took to keep our customer happy. COMMENDED FOR A JOB WELL DONE! The Husky-Paradise Hills project was awarded to Flynn Industrial for installation of cladding systems on three buildings: a Disposal Pump building, a Water Treatment building and a Steam Generation building. A month prior to the beginning of the project, the client called us in a panic as they realized they didn’t have a steel erector on board to install their Behlen preengineered steel package. Thankfully – we were able to help! The steel went up under the supervision of Brad Chapman (Flynn Industrial, Superintendent) without any incident in a safe and productive manner. Husky was very happy with the speed, and professionalism exhibited by Flynn with the mobilization of men and equipment to get the job rolling. They were so happy that after production began on the main structure, they increased the scope of work to include all pipe supports, platforms, miscellaneous steel, man doors, overhead doors, louvers as well as many windows supplied and installed by Flynn Midwest Glazing.

We received the following email from Husky, thanking Flynn for their efforts. I wanted say thanks for the fine demonstration of professionalism & leadership that you and your crew’s members have displayed during the Husky Energy, Paradise Hill SAGD Construction project. It was quite obvious to me right from the start of the project that Flynn had the best contractor representation of all the contractors working on the site. The professionalism shone through in all things they did and especially with regards to the diligence the crews and superintendent showed with their documentation and safety related activities. It was excellent to see safety so deeply rooted within the corporate values. Great job, men – keep up the good work!
RE-ROOFING IN LITTLE CHICAGO The Regina branch secured multiple roofing projects for SaskTel this year. SaskTel-Moose Jaw is the first of several re-roofing projects for the province's Crown owned Telephone Company. This particular project was a rip to deck SBS re-roof. The job was complicated by weather, especially high winds and lots of garbage due to the thickness of the insulation as shown in the photo above. It tends to be fairly windy in the city of Moose Jaw, which has come to be known as “Little Chicago” due to its underworld ties to Al Capone who once ran Canadian whiskey from the city back in the days of prohibition. Despite the challenges on this site the crew did a great job, and even received accolades from the Project Manager from SaskTel, commending them on their efforts and a job well done. GIVING THE SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDER'S STADIUM A FACELIFT The Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field in Regina is currently undergoing a massive expansion. The stadium where the mighty Saskatchewan Roughriders play their heart out is in need of this much needed facelift as the 2013 Grey Cup will be played here. The crews on this job faced a tight completion timeline as the football season was already underway here. With the new seating, Regina Branch crews are adding 155 squares of 1/2 inch corrugated cladding, and 80 squares of floor decking. We are also adding 235 squares of 2 inch Flynn Accusteel metal roof on steel purlins for the new corporate box seats. The Edmonton branch sent a crew to help out with the time constraints. Excellent teamwork on this job got the project done ahead of schedule and without any deficiencies. Fantastic work, men!

FEELING HOT, HOT, HOT! Working on a grocery store is never easy, but this crew made it seem easy. Calgary Branch’s, Brian McCaghren and his crew battled the heat during this Tremco Restoration project on the Shawnessy Coop store – and boy was it hot! The neighbouring hotel didn’t allow for the usual early morning start, but that didn’t bother this crew. They got the job done, and the store and its managers couldn't be happier. Excellent work, men!

RE-ROOFING "THE BESS" – ONCE THE TALLEST BUILDING IN SASKATOON The Delta Bessborough hotel (known to locals as "The Bess") is a ten-storey hotel located
SASKATOON
in the heart of downtown Saskatoon. It is a historical landmark known for its castle like appearance and from 1932 - 1979 it was the tallest building in Saskatoon. Recently one of our Saskatoon Branch roofing crews began a re-roof of 20 separate roof levels (no bigger than 40 squares a piece) of the 232 squares that were originally installed in 1929. Due to the age of the building, the specifications had to be changed from torch applied cap sheet to peel and stick as absolutely no torches were allowed on site to mitigate fire hazards. The roofing crew has handled the numerous logistical challenges of this job exceptionally well. They have been dealing with road closures, utilizing a 90 ton crane in the congested downtown core area, having to work around city events like the Taste of Saskatchewan, the Jazz Festival, Cruise Weekend, Shakespeare in Saskatchewan, River Lights Festival, Pets in the Park, Potash Corps Fireworks Festival, the CCMA's... and if you can believe it - the list goes on! PREMIERE LIVING IS WORK, WORK, WORK! CALGARY
The Calgary Branch had their work cut out for them on this Capitol Hill neighborhood premiere rental apartment building, the Kaleidoscope. The scope of work included Prodema, Fibre C, and Accumet 2000 panels. The evening began with a reception where each member of the Victoria Branch received an all season’s commemorative jacket in honour of their win. Shortly after, they were called aboard the Orca Spirit II vessel to set sail for a cruise adventure. The boat party was filled with music, dancing, gourmet food, and even a photo booth to capture all the action. Victoria had every reason to celebrate! Excellent leadership, teamwork, inspiring attitudes and a commitment to safety excellence have made them our 2012 Winner of the Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award, and they proudly hoist their trophy. RIVER LANDING DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN SASKATOON The city of Saskatoon is in the process of beautifying it’s shoreline along the river downtown by adding more buildings, a walkway, art installations and attractions. The River Centre is located at the gateway of the emerging South Saskatchewan riverfront which is home to the Persephone Theatre, the Prairie Wind Landmark, the riverfront promenade and the future home of the Art Gallery of Saskatchewan. The River Centre is the focal point for access from all three south bridges in and out of the downtown area. Both the Saskatoon and Edmonton Branches are currently set up on site at the River Centre to complete the following scope of work; 814 sq ft of AD300R panel, 2488 sq ft of cladding, 3900 sq ft of Kal-zip and 3200 sq ft of Prodema soffit panel.

Many of our Saskatoon Branch roofers spent time this summer working on the residence of the famous Saskatchewan Artist, Eli Bornstein. They did an excellent job removing the existing roof system to the level of the roof deck surface and installing new wood blocking at the perimeters to suit the height of the new roof assembly. WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBER STADIUM The Winnipeg Branch has been hard at work on the Investors Group Field, aka, the Blue Bomber Stadium! This is a huge project, and Flynn is working on many systems including: Accument 2000 composite systems through the exterior for a total of 53,600 sq ft; the installation of CL 7040 pre-finished metal cladding on the exterior and interior of the building totalling 138,500 sq ft; as well as 20,000 sq ft of Kalzip perforated aluminum screen. Some notable facts about this project are: • The stadiums trusses supporting the 8 acres of roof are the largest and highest in Canada spanning 190 meters and are approximately 200 feet in the air • A 33,422 capacity with the ability to expand to 40,000 for major events including the Grey Cup • Has a sunken bowl design where the playing field dips into the ground 25 feet below the main concourse • The two video boards are high definition screens measuring 120 ft X 30 ft, one behind each zone • Finally the "trough" is gone and there will be 28 washrooms, which is 50% more than the current stadium

The Winnipeg Branch has been hard at work on a heritage restoration project that is the first of its kind outside of Germany. Crews are installing custom Reinzink formed systems over a complete SBS Modified Bitumen insulated system on the historic Laura Secord School in Winnipeg’s Wolseley district. The building was originally constructed in 1913 and is still used as an elementary school today. This is an ongoing project that is expected to be completed later this fall. 100 YEAR HERITAGE RESTORATION WINNIPEG CATHEDRAL The Winnipeg Branch was trusted with the re-roofing of the St. Boniface WINNIPEG Cathedral as part of its 100 year heritage restoration project. Robert Hogue and his crew were selected to undertake this project because of their excellent reputation for safety and quality workmanship. They have been tasked with removing 206 sqs of Corten from the roof and 48 sqs of Corten cladding. This will be replaced by 206 sqs of 20 oz Copper Roof and 48 sqs of 20 OZ Copper Cladding. The original cathedral which was built in 1908 was destroyed by fire in 1968. The remaining walls were incorporated into the design of the new church, creating a dramatic facade facing west across the Red River towards downtown Winnipeg. BATTLING HIGH WINDS ON BOUNDARY DAM IN SASKATCHEWAN
TEMPERATURES RISE IN ONTARIO
The Winnipeg Branch’s Jarek Rzedzian and his crew are installing 510 sqs of EPDM on the Boundary Dam BD3 Project located near Estevan, Saskatchewan. These men have gone above and beyond with regards to their safety performance. Every day the guys are battling high winds on an 80 foot tall building and are extra careful to ensure all materials are secure at all times. Jarek and his crew have been doing an excellent job, and will return to this project late in the fall to install the roof on another new building currently under construction. Excellent work, men!
Ontario experienced one of the hottest summers in a long time this year. The London Branch’s Rui Medeiros (Foreman) and his crew battled that intense summer heat and a tight deadline to complete this 24,200 sq ft PCV Carlisle Membrane Roofing system on the new state of the art training facility for the Carpenters Union. PROGRESS ON REGIONAL MENTAL HEALTH CENTRE IN ST. THOMAS The London Branch has been hard at work on the Regional Mental Health Centre in St. Thomas, ON. The project consists of six different roof systems including Conventional & Inverted Soprema Systems with reflective cap sheet. Working closely with EllisDon, crews were required to have the project watertight in a short time frame and did so safely and on time! CHALLENGE COMPLETE, ONTO THE NEXT! The London Branch’s Jimmy Furtado (Foreman) and his crew have recently completed a 30,900 sq ft re-roof on a former Brick store. The crew had a few unique challenges on this job including the discovery of Phenolic Insulation which had to be bagged before disposal after the roof tear. They were also working up against a hard-fast deadline, as they had to have the job completed by September 10th, as the crew was scheduled to work at the Bruce Power Plant. They managed to pull it off safely and on time. Thanks for all of your hard work, boys!

OPG WORK FOR HAMILTON BRANCH In early July, the Hamilton Branch began work on the OPG Sir Adam Beck project in Niagara Falls. This is a two phase project which consists of the removal of all existing PVC and interlocking pavers, and the installation of 1,000 squares of modified bitumen membrane. The project is ongoing and is expected to extend into 2013. The crews have been doing such a great job that the Hamilton Branch picked up at second OPG project this year. Great job guys, keep up the good work!
TOO MUCH NOISE FOR THE NEIGHBOURS This Sudbury Branch crew was recently tasked with a cladding project at the Vale Garson Mine. The project required the installation of an acoustic enclosure around the number five fresh air raise an and ducting. The enclosure was meant to reduce the noise pollution affecting a nearby subdivision, and the project was a success! Great work, boys!

HAMILTON RISES TO THE CHALLENGE The Hamilton Branch has been contracted to remove the existing roofing system and install the 142 squares of new roof on the Fresco Foods store in Welland, ON. The crew has been faced with many difficulties on site including tight spaces on the various roof levels combined with numerous gas lines, duct work and mechanical units. In spite of the challenges, the crew is doing an excellent job completing the project with quality workmanship, and on schedule. Keep up the good work!
SCHOOL IS OUT, FLYNN IS IN The Sudbury Branch crews were working hard this summer to complete a project at the Algonquin Public School before classes were set to resume. This multi-scope project included metal siding, composite panels, and skylights. In the end, the boys finished in the nick of time, and the project was a success. As always, excellent work men!

THE PERIMETER INSTITUTE Perimeter Institute serves to promote the advance of theoretical physics. It is home to academics from around the world and hosts countless lectures and conferences throughout the year. The Perimeter Expansion was a highly detailed multi-scope job that utilized resources from the Kitchener and Toronto Branches. Together, the branches were able to provide roofing, architectural metal and glazing services along with a few twists to normally installed products. The project was awarded to Flynn in October of 2009, work began on site in March 2010 and continued until October 2011. Flynn’s expertise was utilized to ensure the building envelope was KITCHENER & TORONTO proficiently designed and constructed to achieve the architect’s intent. Along the road, there were many design considerations and construction obstacles that needed to be worked through but in the end, the project integrated the different facets of work to ultimately deliver the client a truly incredible building. Although the architect integrated many unique products to produce a one of a kind building, the complex design of the zinc cladding stands to promote the excellence of Flynn’s installers and their capabilities.
OC TRANSPO BUILDING EXPANSION Andrew Paul (Foreman) of the Ottawa Branch and his crew have been working on the re-roofing and new construction of 36,000 sq ft of 2 ply Mod-Bit on the OC Transpo Building Expansion. The crew has been working closely with General Contractor, Ruiter Construction Ltd. to ensure this job is completed under a very tight schedule. Excellent teamwork boys!

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES ON GOVERNMENT COMPLEX IN KITCHENER The Kitchener Branch was contracted to refinish the entire exterior of a large government complex which included making alterations to parapets and all of drip flashings at windows, siding and louvers. The crew faced many difficulties in accessing a number of the details so lifts, ladders, scaffolds and even a swing stage were all utilized on this project. In the face of many challenges, the crew managed to complete the project ahead of schedule and without any incidents. Excellent work, boys!

PAT ON THE BACK ABOVE AND BEYOND Early this summer the Regina Branch went to work on the Multi-tenant Crossroads Building. The facility was in the process of being re-engineered and had two additional stories added to building. Flynn’s job was to put a temporary seal on the existing roof, adding decking to the new areas with SBS roofing.

APPRECIATION FOR SAFETY LEADERSHIP Both the St. John’s and Toronto Branches have had a hand in the large scope of work currently underway on the MUN New Residence Project in St. John’s, NF. The glazing and metals portion of the job will be taken care of through the Toronto Branch, with the roofing side to be carried out by St. John’s. The scope of work includes Kawneer Curtainwall, composite panels, metal cladding, and metal roofing. So far crews have been doing an excellent job and have demonstrated a committed effort to safety on site. They have even received accolades from the Project Superintendent at EllisDon. Project Coordinator, Aimee Eden (Toronto) received the following email from him; I wanted to take a moment to send a note of appreciation for the effort your supervisors and Flynn have made in keeping the site clean and safe. Flynn has definitely been a leader in this area on the project and has been a pleasure to deal with. JUST BEFORE THE BELL RINGS The Hamilton Branch was challenged to take on a 25,200 sq ft roof replacement and install of a new system under a strict timeline. The project was the A N Meyer High School, and it needed to be done before the school year began. The crew stared on site on August 13th, and completed the removal and installation by August 30th. Great work, guys!

DETOUR GOLD In October 2011, Flynn began its mobilization to the Detour Lake Mine project. The Detour Lake Mine is a 540 square kilometer site located 900 kilometers north of Toronto, and 150 kilometres north of the nearest town of Cochrane, Ontario. The Detour Lake Mine, once it begins production in 2013, will be Canada’s largest gold mine. It is designed as a year-round open pit operation with a modern mining camp facility to host its future 500 employees. This mine has been projected to produce an average of 650,000 ounces of gold annually over a period of at least 20 years. Flynn’s team, consisting of Foreman Sandro Nunes and his crew Julio Maio, George Figuredo, Liberio Arruda, Mario Ferreira, Marcus Videla, Mauro Videla, Luis Devedas, Foreman Frank da Rocha and his crew of Kevin da Rocha, Bernard Williams, Raul Meireis, Romeu Meireis, Jamie Francisco and Project Managers Scott Gilmour and Paul Walker installed approximately 230,000 sq ft of SBS roofing system over

the course of the project. The roof areas are split into three buildings: the Mine Service Facility, Truck Wash Facility and the Processing Plant Facility. The largest of the three buildings measured 180,000 sq. ft. and 120 feet high. The roof system installed was a Soprema Soprafix 2-ply modified bituminous membrane system with a 20‑year labour and material warranty. Installation ended in June of this year. Due to the size, scope and remote location of the project, there were numerous obstacles for the Flynn team to overcome. These obstacles included living in isolated camp-style trailers; heavy winter snow removal due to proximity of the project to James Bay; material availability/logistics; temperatures that dipped below -40; bears/wildlife; regular highway closures due to dangerous conditions; equipment failure; craning issues and coordination issues with other contractors on-site. Despite these obstacles, the project was a big success and we would like to thank everyone involved in this project for their hard work!
VERY UNIQUE UNDERTAKING FOR FLYNN KITCHENER At the end of the summer, the Kitchener Branch was contacted to do repairs on some very unique buildings. Service Technicians Paul Kelly and Brad Hyman were called out to complete the roof maintenance on a number of businesses in the Children’s Safety Village including Schneider’s Meats, Shoppers Drug Mart, CIBC and the Humane Society. But these were no ordinary buildings – they were the pint size versions of the real thing! This tiny village was created to teach children road safety. It includes scaled down roads, and scaled down versions of local businesses. This certainly made for an interesting project for these men and some very unique photos for the Flash!

1.4 MILLION SQ FT ROOF IN CORNWALL FINALLY COMPLETE

This is one of the largest roofs in Flynn’s history and was a major endeavor and incredible accomplishment for all involved. Great job to everyone who had a hand in this project!
The Kitchener Branch has taken on the installation of 500 squares of multi-level modified bitumen TPO roofing for the VBA Assisted Living Centre. This is Todd Drever’s first major project undertaking as a Foreman, and he is doing a great job. Excellent work boys – keep up the good work!

SAFETY EYE OPENER Safety comes first for a reason. Taking all necessary precautions may take a few extra minutes, but it can save your life. This is something we all know to be true, but not all of us have actually lived it. Well, on October 19, at 10:45 am, Jermaine Miller and Gordon Walker of the Toronto Branch learned just how important their safety equipment really is. That Friday morning it was sunny and cool, and there was not a cloud in sight. Jermaine and Gordon were utilizing a swing stage to conduct glazing operations at the 36th floor level on the Skybridge project in downtown Toronto. Jermaine was lowering the swing stage about five inches when the motor failed to shut off and continued to lower on the right side of the stage. He immediately operated the emergency shut-off, but it failed to stop the motor and the stage continued its descent. After repeated attempts to stop the motor Jermaine and Gordon’s personal fall protection equipment engaged and they became suspended from their lifelines 36 stories above the ground. Thankfully, nearby were Jorge Da Silva (Metals Foreman), Tony Bond (Metals), Joaquim Moreira (Metals), Daniel Griffiths (Metals), Paul Pena (Service Foreman), and Richard Doucette (Glazing Foreman) who immediately initiated a rescue. These men worked quickly, and successfully brought Jermaine and Gordon back to safety. Each contributor to the rescue effort has been presented with a Flynn Lifesaver Award for their professionalism, and dedication to safety displayed during this incident. We would like to thank them for all of their efforts, and remind you to Stay Safe!
