President’s Message
“Risk Management”
By now many of you in the field have noticed that our corporate commitment to “Risk Management” is no passing fancy. The resources we have committed to this initiative are significant and we think well directed. As I have stated many times, this is not optional — especially for a company like ours.

I have recently attended a couple of working industry conferences, and the notion of “Risk Management” is starting to gain momentum with our industry peers, and competitors as well. Many of our competitors are struggling with this, but I am pretty sure they will figure it out over time.

The message I have for you in this edition of the Flynn Flash is really a special request. I would say we are managing the risk we face each day very well, certainly we are the industry leaders when it comes to being proactive with “Risk Management.” But, to be able to say we truly have an efficiently functioning program, we need full commitment from each and every employee. My request is that all of you take an active role in all facets of “Risk Management.”

One facet of this that often goes unnoticed is jobsite theft of either materials or equipment. Unfortunately we have experienced our fair share of this type of thing over the past year or so. Fortunately, unknown to the criminals involved, our “proactive” measures with things like “recovery software” installed on all aerial and rather expensive motorized units (Bobcats/Zoom Booms, etc.) we have recovered the stolen equipment more often than not. In fact, this “Risk Management” effort lead to the conviction of the criminals involved!

Theft prevention and the proper management of our assets is part of “Risk Management.” My special request is simple: Any time you witness questionable actions on the job relating to our materials, equipment or vehicles, please report it to your supervisor. We can then vigorously take appropriate actions. Only when we can achieve this type of across-the-board commitment in loss prevention will we be able to say we have done all we can do.

They Don’t Get Any Better Than This! Ontario region annual safety award winners
In February, Ontario Region Risk Manager Tony Letterio announced the annual and semi-annual winners of the Flynn National Safety Program. The program, initiated in Ontario at the beginning of 2004, is now implemented nationwide. We present awards to “the Foreman and crew that has worked as a team to consistently demonstrate Safe Work Practices.” Winners are based on their highest scores relative to number of site evaluations conducted. We are also pleased to announce the creation of the “100% Club” that recognizes Foremen and crew members who achieve a perfect score on any one, individual, site evaluation.

Pictured centre is Hamilton Branch Manager Blair Holmes, whose branch received the same award for 2003, plus the Milestone award for 500,000 hours without a lost time injury during 1998–2003. And last but not least, on the right, is Ontario Risk Manager Tony Letterio, who directs the Ontario Region Safety Program. These awards are issued jointly from the CSAO (Construction Safety Association of Ontario) and OIRCA (Ontario Industrial Roofing Contractors Association). That’s what we’re talking about! Let’s get next years’ as well! And in keeping with this management commitment to safety, Alberta Risk Manager Mike Dauncey put some 40 men through an eight and a half-hour, “fall-pro” training blitz recently in his region (below).

(Teamwork Attitude Sharing Knowledge) Congratulations to Steve Pass (Halifax), winner of the $200 TASK Award. Steve had a challenge ahead of him on a large winter project. The wall system he had to install was a 5” thick foam panel, each one more than 3½’ wide and 45’ long. This is an unusual project for the Halifax Branch. How do you stand these monster
Stan Maciboric, Regina Branch Manager, found a sweet piece of cutting equipment. It’s a Milwaukee 8” Electric Metal Cutting Saw. No fuel/oil mixing, no gas fumes, cuts 16 Ga. deck, Z-Bars, and cuts up to ¼” thick steel. It is virtually spark free and therefore a VERY LOW RISK OF FIRE! panels without incurring the cost of a boom truck for 10 hours a day? Flynn had 350 of these panels to install in 40 working days. Steve contacted a local scaffold supplier and Sani Engineering to develop a travelling hoist system built from “scaffold” components. Together they designed the system, acquired all the necessary engineering drawings, stamps, and permits in order to obtain approval to use this slick system on the project. The total cost for the engineering, scaffold set-up, etc. was less than $600. Rental cost for the system is

This is Flynn’s initial entry project into the massive U.S. construction market. It is an Orpheum-style theatre
Victoria Condo A re-roof challenge
Flynn is in the process of completing the re-roofing on the fourteen-storey Sandpiper condominium in Victoria. Our contract also includes the replacement of all the screen walls and patios over the living space. The main roof is 4,500 sq ft and the seven deck areas total another 8,750 sq ft. Foreman Jack Marsh and his crew are performing very well at this challenging job. Jack had completed a couple of repairs on this condominium during his career, and always thought that he would feel sorry for the person who had to re-roof the building. Little did Jack know that he would the person to re-roof the building!
with a 2600-seat concert hall, a 450-seat chamber music hall and an outdoor event and performance garden. The solid and punctuated exterior of the building is comprised of approximately 15,000 sq ft of special hand-made 8 mm zinc and pre-weathered galvalume panels. Custom-designed panels hand-made of zinc and pre-patina copper will also adorn the interior of the complex. The site houses a fullycomputerized metals shop where Flynn Specialty Metals is able to manufacture a new flush mount panel system design. This “international” Flynn project will be completed by September ’05. The Project is being controlled in the Vancouver Office but managed on site by Pete Taylor (Van.), above.

Claremont Secondary School
is undergoing extensive renovations as Knappett Projects Inc. takes on another building rehabilitation project. Many construction projects of this nature are being undertaken in British Columbia, especially in
the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. Flynn Victoria began installation in February 2005 and will continue work for about six months. Our scope includes 3,000 sq ft of new roofing plus roof perimeter, the supply and installation of 7,000 sq ft of exterior wall cladding and flashings. More than 70% of the roof has building envelope tie-ins, totaling more than 13,000 sq ft. A special mention to Ken Littleproud (metals), Chris Sitter (roofing) and John Kulczycki (roofing) who are acting as Foremen for this job. We would also like to thank the crew members who worked so hard to complete this very detailed project.

Victoria Branch shop foreman Rich Stanton has recently stepped into our vacancy in estimating. Rich brings extensive sheet metal experience to the position and we are very pleased to welcome him to our administrative team. Congratulations to Bill Connell, who was recently promoted to Foreman of our shingling crew, as well as Jack Marsh—who stepped up to Foreman of our main flat roofing crew. Shawn Mason and Tim Pollard recently earned their Sheet Metal Journeyman credentials. And now Shawn has become a Foreman in our Sheet Metal Department. Congratulations! Flynn Victoria welcomes the following new staff members: Martin Janota, Justin Boydell, Ray Hammon, John Kulczycki, Adam Marshall. Roofing apprentice Andrew Ellington and his wife Angie are expecting their first child in August.

Maybe so, but not high heating or air conditioning costs in this new facility in Calgary, Alberta. With energy costs going through the roof, our Speedwall foam panel was a no-brainer for the owners of Canadian Western Furnace.
Hey! And How About Our Service Guys?
Reliability is the name of the game for our Service Departments. These dedicated guys, in all of our branches, respond to calls day and night, 365 days of the year. Well, last December, less than 3 days before Christmas, a crew from our Edmonton Branch responded to a call from a residence with a leak. Not our normal market, but the caller was desperate, as no other roofer would take the call — but Wayne Hoberg’s guys did. Two days before Christmas they solved the problem and received high praise from the homeowner, who wrote a note on the invoice, “Thank you for responding to our emergency so promptly. We appreciated it!” Wayne said, “I am thinking of having this service order framed for Adam Hernberg (pictured above). I don’t know ANY company that would have done this for these people.” We agree, and thank all of our service guys for their dedication and efforts as well!
And we all know that in every aspect of Flynn personnel activity, safety is first—but heavy industrial projects require even more awareness and scrutiny. “Safety issues are paramount and a part of our daily routine,” says Flynn Industrial Manager Fred Thom. General Superintendent Dave Cuthill, along with all our site Foremen and field crews, are working hard to get the job done with safety as our highest commitment. Keep up the good work, guys!
Flying Dust Elementary School

The high “R” values (thermal resistance factor) of foam panel allows an owner to spend a little more initially and save “big time” in the long run. The modern Calgary facility incorporated a nice mix of foam panel and corrugated metal “accent” cladding in a silver metallic finish.

Flynn Industrial started work on a major project at the Alberta Heart Institute — University of Alberta, Edmonton. Flynn’s contract is to supply and install more than 600,000 sq ft of metal floor and interstitial deck on this 9-storey project. Our work is expected to be complete by December 2005. And Flynn Industrial is still on-site and going strong at Syncrude near Fort McMurray, Alberta. New contracts announced include Plant 6-4, Plant 25 and the Aurora Slurry Preparation Building.

We even do commercial storefronts Richard White installs our Accumet composite panel on one of many vertical “wing walls” that are featured on this commercial project at Builder’s Park in Calgary. “These are not big jobs but certainly are different,” says Steve Teal from our Calgary Branch. This particular project involved the design & manufacture of about 100 sign band panels to be installed at various positions around the structure. They were constructed of lightweight square aluminum tubing, wrapped in the same aluminum composite material. The project was specified in a number of custom colours including purple, green, and rust. Nice!

Flynn fabricated, supplied and installed several thousand sq ft of Accumet 2000 modular composite wall panel system
with a silver metallic finish. Blue accent banding gave the project a “splash” of colour. Complete with R20 insulation, Z-Bar spacers and air barrier, our systems are second to none in the industry. Flynn also supplied and installed almost 50,000 sq ft of steel floor and roof deck. In addition, we completed 23,500 sq ft of SBS Modified Bitumen insulated roof system. Our roofing crew consisted of Nicholas Bland, John Sanderson, Thomas Watcher, Mario Steinig and Paul Gravito. Beautiful job, guys!
Expanding Supply Chain Management The Flynn Metals Crew, under the direction of Foreman Tom Hill, are shown installing insulated metal cladding on the latest expansion to Calgary’s Supply Chain Management (the distribution centre for WalMart). The project included more than 47,000 sq ft of metal liner (vapour barrier), Z-Bars insulation, and exterior metal profile. Keith Foster’s metal deck crew also welded some 205,000 sq ft of metal deck before K.C. Neilson’s roofing crew laid down the same square footage of EPDM.

Mike Herman (Branch Manager, Saskatoon) is a proud and busy father these days, as he recently announced that his youngest daughter Kimberlee-Anne will wed Jonathan Clay Denoon on June 18. The Saskatoon Branch staff and all at Flynn congratulate Craig Kucher, who was recently promoted to Metal Superintendent. The branch also welcomes Ryley Koch, who was transferred from the Winnipeg Branch earlier this year. Flynn Winnipeg would like to welcome Jeff Stewart as a Project Coordinator, and Joel Scott, Estimator. Colin Lazarak, Estimator, has accepted a transfer to our Calgary Branch in the same capacity. David Philippe has moved into the office from the field to be an Assistant Roofing Superintendent.

GTAA Terminal
Canada’s largest construction project has Flynn written all over it! Some of you may recall that in the Spring 2002 Flynn Flash we wrote about our first contract involvement in the new Terminal Development project at Pearson Airport in Toronto. We were proud to have become a participant in this massive expansion program, successfully securing three initial contracts. Work on the new terminal building included the supply, fabrication and installation of 13,500 sq ft of AxiomPlus platewall for the Store Front panels on the east and west endwalls, and 38,500 sq ft of Axiom panels on the Groundside “eyebrow” and soffits. We were also successful in acquiring the “additions and alterations” contract to supply

Well, we’ve come a long way, baby!
But our opportunities didn’t end there. We were then awarded the “Ductwork” Package and “Metal Deck on the Hammerhead,” as well as “Package 2—Interior finishes for tenant spaces” and the “Automated People Mover,” which incorporates more than 60,000 sq ft AxiomPlus platewall panels.
We are very proud to say that since then Flynn Canada has become the dominant roof and wall panel contractor of choice on this project. In addition to these three early contracts, we have also secured the massive Interior Wall Package of the main terminal. That contract includes some 80,000 sq ft of 3 mm Modified Accumet 2000 composite panel, 45,000 sq ft of 3 mm Modified AxiomPlus platewall, and 10,000 sq ft, 3 mm Modified AxiomPlus panels fabricated in stainless steel. We also designed, fabricated and installed nearly 5 kilometres of 10” high stainless steel wall base and cart rails. This single contract is the largest single panel contract awarded to Flynn to date, and led to many extras and additional work by the time we had successfully completed the project in April, 2004. In addition, we were also successful in negotiating “Phase 2—Interior Finishes on Pier F and the “Hammerhead”, “Phase 2—Pier F & Hammerhead and PODs” that included 40,000 sq ft of 3” foam panel
In addition to all the work on the new terminal, we have landed a substantial amount of work on the East Expansion at Terminal 3. More than 300,000 sq ft of floor and roof deck, 10,000 sq ft of siding, and 40,000 sq ft of Axiom panels are required. Concurrent with the above work, spin-off contracts have been substantial. In all, the Flynn metals group total contract values to date have added up to almost one quarter of a million man hours—120 man years of work. Metals Project Manager Doug Young has led the charge, but many other Metals personnel have dedicated themselves almost exclusively to this project for more than five years. But stay tuned—there’s even more…
Let’s not forget the Roofing Division The Toronto roofing crews have played no small part in this project either. Flynn (Toronto) secured the contract for “Phase One—Piers D and E,” incorporating more than 160,000 sq ft of mechanicallyfastened PVC roof during the winter of 2002. In January 2005, we were successful in landing “Phase 2—Pier F, the

Hammerhead and PODs” where 370,000 sq ft of PVC roofing is to be installed. More than 50,000 sq ft of new, fully-adhered, fully-tapered PVC roof will also be applied on the “Automated People Mover” facilities which shuffles people from the Terminal to the parking garage area.

PCL/Aecon Project Manager Frank Sutton praised Luis for his professionalism after being impressed with the productivity that Luis’ men had achieved while working in some pretty adverse winter conditions. Paul Manchisi, Toronto Roofing Superintendent, says that, “Luis and his crew will have completed more than $8.5 million dollars worth of work for the GTAA since 2000.” Their efforts, and the efforts

Toronto Metals Crew Wins Safety Award on Major PCL Development Project
Flynn Canada Safety Programs are paying off in spades as PCL, Canada’s largest contractor, honoured the company with a highly prestigious “Safety Award” on the Harbourview Estates Condo project in downtown Toronto (pictured above). The project is part of a massive waterfront development by Concord Adex, a division of Concord Pacific Group. The company was created by Li Ka Shing, Asia’s richest person, and is currently also involved in major waterfront development in the False Creek area of Vancouver’s downtown. At Harbourview, Flynn is fabricating, supplying and installing architectural panels on the project under the direction of Dan Sims, Toronto Project Manager. Great job, guys!
What a Guy! Service at its best
Flynn Canada prides itself on the quality of its service and people, and Richard Hunt (Toronto) is no exception. Perhaps it’s because of his industry experience and training, or maybe just because he’s such a nice guy, but Richard did us all proud at the Toronto airport recently. A weary, little old traveler emailed us, and we quote: “Subject: You have good people working for you I am using my grandson’s computer to email you about a fine man that came to my assistance. I was at the Lester B. Airport and could not get into my car because my hands were full of suitcases and gifts I brought back from New Zealand. One of your fine employees, Mr Richard Hunt, came up and helped me. Several people had passed by without even thinking of helping, but Mr Hunt, took the time to help me. I wanted to let you know that not only was he helpful but very polite...and a nice little bum too!” What more can be said? You ‘da man!

We welcome Luc Guilbeault to Flynn Ottawa as Roofing Superintendent. We also welcome Joselyn Jones, who joined our London office as an Administrative Assistant. In Toronto, Alex Boterman and Ross Haines both joined the Service Department, and Alex Aldaya and Carlos Velasco became members of our I.T. group. The Toronto Estimating Team also welcomes Stefano Panarisi, who has roofing experience with CentiMark Ltd. and Posi-Slope. Jeff Small joined our Purchasing Dept. Welcome all! Also, Ken Mahoney has moved over from Sales to help out a beleaguered Toronto Estimating Team. National Accounts (based in Toronto) recently announced that Jess Da Costa has joined their team from Tremco as well as Marino Romero, who has moved over from Toronto Service Department. In other news, Mark Agius (Toronto Estimating) and his wife Katie had a baby boy—Matthew,7 lbs, in early January. Jeff Aviss literally did him one better when wife Camilla gave birth to twins days later (a boy Quinn, 5.2 lbs, and girl Paige, 4.11 lbs).

Last fall, Flynn Canada was awarded a contract for the addition to Sobey’s existing warehouse in Moncton, N.B. The focus for a successful completion to this project would have to be on TEAMWORK. The project was a joint effort, bringing together Flynn

crews from Halifax, Saskatoon and Moncton. Strict code and compliance regulations were enforced, as Flynn supplied and installed the roof and wall cladding for the warehouse, cooler and freezer areas. Our contract included approximately 70,000 sq ft of Ballasted EPDM roofing and was installed by our Moncton crews with help from our Saskatoon Branch.

More than 20,000 sq ft of 4” Speedwall was also installed at the loading dock and interior partition walls. Furthermore, another 28,000 sq ft of 5” Speedwall was required for the interior and exterior walls of the freezer and cooler. This was the area described in the TASK section on page 4 of this Flash. The sandwich panel system was installed by our Moncton Sheet Metal Crew, made up of Foreman Randy Boland, Eugene Leger and Alain Richard, while the Speedwall Foam Panels were installed by our Halifax Sheet Metal Crew of Foreman John Fleming, Jeff Doane and Brian Cormier (Moncton). Our installation crews worked through some pretty severe Maritime winter weather conditions—snowstorm after snowstorm and wind chill temperatures as low as –40˚C. But even in those harsh conditions the guys were able to complete the work in the time allotted — especially with that new piece of hoisting equipment…right Steve (see TASK)? Great work!
