President’s Message
“A New Era”
At the time of writing this letter, we have almost completed the move into our new Corporate Office and Toronto Branch facility. Most of the people (including myself) are now settled at our desks. While this new facility is nothing short of amazing, and clearly represents a “new era” in our evolution, I just can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic. I can recall (as many of you out there can as well) a little building on the corner of Dublin St. and Border Ave. in Winnipeg. This is where my father leased the first building for “Flynn and Associates Ltd.” to operate from in 1978. There was no Corporate Office, no computers, and no fancy signs. Just a handful of determined and hard-working people trying to make a dream come true. When thinking of the humble beginnings of this company, it is remarkable how far we have come; thanks in no small part to the efforts of the founding members of the company. Now some twenty-seven years later we are, of course, a very different company. Accordingly, we made the decision about a year ago that in an effort to bring greater efficiencies to each and every office, it was appropriate to centralize various functions under one roof for the ultimate benefit and support of each Branch’s operations. Our new Corporate Office will have expanded functions. This office will house Management staff who will be responsible for much more than just accounting and finance. These other areas are Risk Management, Information Technology, Marketing, National Accounts, Credit Management and Human Resources, with other functions to follow in time. So, while we are excited about our new and much more efficiently laid out facility, and while we eagerly build the new team, let’s not forget to recognize and thank the many people who have played a role in helping get us to where we are. The transition has been disruptive and difficult, but as usual the PEOPLE of this company continue to rise to the challenges put in their way.

Corporate News Risk Management Conferences in Toronto & Winnipeg Pictured below are almost ninety service vehicles; exemplifying the strength of Flynn Canada in the Toronto region (photo by Blimp Pics—see TASK). More than one hundred service employees and technicians recently attended an “all Ontario” conference to review Risk Management and how it affects the company and their day-to-
day tasks —safety was the primary focus. Discussed at the conference were the effects of compensation and insurance claims on the company and employees, and how sound Risk Management can help avoid such dilemmas. Excellent safety records that result in fewer claims enhance our ability to negotiate additional contracts — this has a positive impact on everyone! Big thanks to the drivers for the great job arranging the vehicles, and traffic directors Frank Lorenco and Shammi Munday.

(Teamwork Attitude Sharing Knowledge) The price and availability of polyisocyanurate insulation has changed dramatically over the past year, submits Don Delaney, Toronto Branch. It is possible to use EPS as a cost saving alternative, even on FM Approved assemblies, but we need to keep the following in mind; the installation of a thermal barrier is contingent on local building codes and the sprinkler system being installed. Typically this is not a requirement, but the issue of insurance may arise. FM Global, a large industrial property insurer, requires the installation of a thermal barrier if EPS is used in lieu of ISO. If the end user of the facility
is FM insured, this could be an issue— regardless of compliance with local building codes. Please keep this in mind when installing or pricing EPS with no thermal barrier. Plastifab offers a summary sheet with further information on EPS in fire rated roof assemblies. Stephen Patti, winner of the $200 TASK Award, submits that certain companies are utilizing modern computer image remote technology for commercial photography, and Blimp Pics from Hamilton is one such company. They use a small, state-of-the-art “blimp cam” for taking aerial pictures. Our Branches could use this method to obtain photographs of prospective or finished roofs. It could also be a great way of showing customers a complete view of their roof— especially the “before and after” pictures. Coordinates can be stored so that the “after” shot can be taken from the exact same angle and altitude. Blimp Pics charges $495 for a dozen digital photos, for unlimited use on either our website or in print. Examples of their work can be viewed on their website at: www.blimppics.com (905-643-8830).

Toronto’s New Office
Open for business!
Construction of Flynn’s new Toronto Branch and Corporate offices at 6300 Northam Drive, Mississauga, is complete! The facility has undergone extensive renovations and expansion work in order to accommodate both the Toronto Branch operations and the relocation of Corporate Head Office from Winnipeg. The relocation of Head Office is designed to improve operational efficiencies by centralizing and amalgamating various corporate functions. The Corporate Offices will house Finance and Administration, Risk Management, Marketing, Human Resources and IT Service departments, as well as expanding the Toronto Branch operations. Relocation of both facilities began in July and was completed in August.
A very special thank you Don Belton, Vice President/Partner—Winnipeg, below, has spent the past year acting as Project Manager for the restoration and reconstruction of the new Toronto Branch and Corporate offices in Mississauga.

Corporate News
Roland Dandan is the new Controller for the Flynn Group of Companies. Roland had been working very closely in Winnipeg with John Vance and Toby Unruh for a number of
months , learning our business as well as our financial reporting. Roland comes from a manufacturing environment where he held a similar position for over ten years. He has been assembling his new team by hiring staff from the Toronto area, including Toby Unruh and Michael Hughes — who have both moved from Winnipeg. A special thanks goes out to our Winnipeg team for all of their traveling and help in making the transition a success: Coral Bilkoski, Vanessa Green, Dan Huzarski, Ramona Lacko, Kim Perry, Janet Purtill, and John Vance. Big thanks to Roland Dandan, and Deborah Ferriera, who were also away from home a lot during the transition, as well as all those who traveled from Toronto to Winnipeg to assist with the staff training. Last, but not least, we would like to welcome the following new employees to Flynn Corporate (who all started in July): Jessica Medeiros, Denise Dindyal, Susanne Gulyas, Michelle Mackenzie, Rita Manzari, Shelly Munday, Kelly Sandhu and Lydia Yegoroff. Gateway Casino & Convention Centre
Our Vancouver forces recently completed over $1.2 million in contracts on the new Langley Casino and Convention Centre (pictured at bottom) for Dominion Construction Ltd.

The scope of work included: metal decking, metal panels, metal cladding, and TPO membrane roofing. The diversity we demonstrated showcased the talents of all of our departments. Great job by all involved, let’s keep up the good work.
ICBC Number 2 Another start for Flynn
Flynn Victoria has put the finishing touches on a second Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) Claim Center on the Lower Mainland. The Vancouver Branch was responsible for the quotations and awarding of contracts for the projects. Both buildings were re-roofed with Tremco products, and our crew was lead by Rod Carey and included: Geoff Myers, Clayton Mineault, Darren Brown, Nathan Mader, Ron Hill, Stephen Brown, Sheldon May, Shawn MacDougall, Jeff Kwissa, and Dylan Tanner. This team really excelled at installing this product. We appreciate all of the great work they put in as well as the long stretches away from their homes and families.
Trumpeter’s Landing
Trumpeter’s Landing is an interesting project that is taking place in Courtenay (just over mid-way up Vancouver Island). This new construction project has a series of four buildings. Flynn’s contract includes: waterproofing, 2-ply roofing, and flashing. The Victoria Branch expects the duration of the project to be approximately twelve months, and that it will see the participation of many of our Island employees.
Flynn Canada and Beedie Construction— a Great B.C. Team
For over 20 years, Martell Bros. and Flynn Canada (Vancouver) have been combining forces. During that time, we’ve installed a total of over 30 million square feet of EPDM roof systems together. A vast majority of this volume has been in partnership with Beedie Construction. Beedie is well known for their concrete tilt-up buildings, which have become a major part of several business parks throughout the various municipalities of the Lower Mainland It is due to the outstanding efforts of all involved that our relationship with Beedie has flourished so well over the years. In particular, the men who have seen these projects to completion are to thank ; for having created long-lasting positive impressions on our customers. Without the efforts of these dedicated men, the

partnership wouldn’t be what it is today. The Flynn Management Team would like to send a special thanks to all of the Foremen who have worked on, and continue to work on, these Beedie Projects. Mike Connelly (Senior Foreman), Dave Willey (Senior Foremen), Don Kristensen (Foreman), Sean MacInnis (Foreman) and Saul Fuentes (Foreman) have all run various projects throughout their tenure. Of course, none of this success would be possible without the team effort of all of their crew members. Way to go, guys!
The Flynn Hornets Play for the Kids Who Can’t
The Flynn Hornets played in an annual Slo-Pitch tournament at the end of May in order to raise funds for the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation. This was our fourth year participating and a great time was had by all. The tournament was a single-loss knockout format. We won our first game, but lost our second. The loss was slightly easier to take, since we lost to a great customer — Dominion Construction. The Hornets are already planning for next year’s event, in the hopes that we can raise even more money… and play a little longer in the tournament. With sincere thanks to our employees, players, suppliers, and business partners, we are proud to say that we raised over $2,700.00 for the kids. Thanks, Flynn Hornets!
Changes in B.C. Management
“Promoting employees from within has always been a valued asset at Flynn Canada,” said Len Edmondson, Vice-President/Partner, British Columbia, as he recently announced personnel moves within the B.C. region: Brian Nemez moves to Manager, Flynn Roof Maintenance Ltd. (Vancouver Branch); Camille Cote moves to Senior Re-roof Sales Manager (Vancouver Branch); and Chris Filluel moves to Branch Manager (Abbotsford). “We pride ourselves on our ability in bringing forward opportunities for advancement to all employees,” continued Len. “Each individual brings a unique flavor to our business and their new positions. We are confident that these changes will strengthen our company as a whole.” And after five years of service with Flynn, Darryl MacDonald accepted a promotion to the position of Risk Manager (B.C.). Darryl is doing an excellent job assessing risks as well as the implementation of Flynn’s Corporate Safety Program for B.C.
B.C. News
Dave Eriksen has accepted a position with the Shingle Division as an Estimator. Dave has been employed with the Service Department for a number of years, and has been working to complete his TQ in roofing. Good luck, Dave! And Coral Bilkoski (Accounts Receivable), has relocated her family from Winnipeg to become part of the B.C. Flynn family. Just remember Coral— you don’t have to shovel rain!

Congratulations! In Abbotsford, Dean Duncan (Superintendent) had a little guy born on June 1st, weighing 5 lbs 15 oz. He has been named Cole Douglas Rolf Robert Duncan after his grandfathers. Bea Fisher, Vancouver Branch, welcomed her second grandson, Nathan, into her life in May. And who would have known that Flynn Canada, a building envelope contractor, would also play matchmaker? Flynn Victoria would like to extend congratulations to two employees, Mark O’Hanley (Metals Foreman) and Kathy Cliff (Estimator), who recently got engaged! Mark popped the big question after asking permission from Kathy’s dad — Fred Cliff, Metals Estimator (nice move, Mark!). We wish you both all the best in the future, and the staff say they want an invitation to the wedding (yeah, right)!

Alberta AB Management Restructures
Doug Flynn recently announced that in the continuing spirit of increasing efficiencies in the company through regionalization, a decision was made that our Alberta operations would be managed as its own region. “Our operations in Alberta were previously considered part of our ‘Prairie Region’, along with Manitoba and Saskatchewan. But the Alberta marketplace itself, as well as our place in it, requires a management mindset that is unique to Alberta.” Doug then announced, “Mr Derin Franzen (below) has accepted overall responsibility for ALL operations in Alberta to ensure that we are properly structured for future growth and continued profitability.” Derin was previously Calgary Branch Manager and Partner. He wasted no time in his new role by making some key moves. Gary Playsted (Victoria Branch) accepted the position of Roofing Manager of our Calgary Branch, effective August 2, 2005. Gary and his family will make the move from Victoria to Calgary over the coming months. Gerry Edwards (formerly Business Development) accepted the role of Service Manager, Calgary Branch. Derin is confident that these changes will strengthen our position in the Alberta marketplace. We congratulate these gentlemen and thank them for their continued efforts and commitment.

The New Canadian Natural Resources Limited Centre at the University of Alberta Nears Completion
From the outset of this job at the prestigious CNRL Building at the University of Alberta in Edmonton (pictured at top and below), Accumet was Flynn’s only choice for architectural metal panels. We were not happy with the products specified; they were supposed to match an existing panel on an adjacent building, but we felt they were inferior. So during negotiations we convinced PCL Constructors, as well as the architect and owner, to instead go with Flynn Accumet “rainscreen designed” composite panels. The results speak for themselves — a great looking project!
Edmonton’s Roofing Crews Shine… Again!
Most of us remember a pretty wet and cold spring this year. Well Edmonton’s was no exception. The Shaw Convention Centre had been suffering terrible roof leaks every time it rained. So Jim Lee of Marshall-Lee Construction could not have been happier when our Edmonton crews worked over the long weekend and sealed the entire building — including the existing Convention Hall… in two days! And guess what? It rained on the holiday Monday, and not a drop inside. Way to go guys!

Jason Saunders joined Flynn Edmonton in mid-May as an Estimator. A belated welcome, Jason. Is there another Grant Fuhr in the making… within the Flynn family? There have been a few “not too shabby” hockey players who have come up through the Alberta Minor Hockey Association. The Sutter boys come to mind, Lanny MacDonald, Mark Messier, and of course Hall of Fame goaltender Grant Fuhr. Well, here comes Colton Kucher, Fred Kucher’s son. Colton is goalie for Northern Alberta’s AAA novice hockey team, and has been named MVP in numerous games. With Colton in the pipes, his team has gone on to win every tournament this season. Paying attention to the NHL lockout Fred? A $39 million cap… still not too bad!

Hi-tech walls to match hi-tech building
The Galleria, an existing high rise building in downtown Regina that once housed retail stores, shops, and office space in the tower section, has been completely renovated and converted into a Federal Government Building.
Winnipeg’s National Regina’s Galleria Research Council Building Takes on Headquarters a New Tenant In the centre of downtown Winnipeg, the NRC Headquarters project had a special challenge; the Accumet composite panels had to be custom painted to match the
faded rose metallic finish of the adjacent existing building. In addition, both steel cladding and the modified bitumen roof system were included in our scope of work The building envelope was completed through the winter months, which made these system installations difficult — to say the least. Project Management and coordination was provided by David Sterling and Tyler Tomlinson in our Metal Division, and Clarence Poworoznik and Kyle Ouellette in our Roofing Division. Installation was provided by a variety of both sheet metal and roofing technicians. We spent almost a year and a half working on design and budgets before landing the project.
Flynn was successful in acquiring the contract to re-roof approximately 16,500 square feet with new EPDM ballasted system and 6,000 square feet of built-up roofing with metal floor & roof deck in fills. Flynn Participates in Hyundai ‘s Re-Branding Program
As part of Hyundai Canada’s North American re-branding initiative, Flynn recently completed work on one of their newest dealerships in Regina (pictured below). The scope of work contracted by Flynn included the supply and installation of 17,400 square feet of metal floor and roof deck, some 16,600 square feet of loose laid EPDM roofing as well as 3,000 square feet of Accumet 2000 composite panel in Hyundai’s three corporate colours. Excellent job guys!

Congratulations! Gian Harrison, wife of Derrick Harrison, Winnipeg Branch, recently gave birth to a 10 lb 6 oz girl named Cary. Ted Mikolajczyk, Winnipeg, and his wife Magda recently had a 6 lb 9 oz boy named Dylan. And Dustin Prairie, Winnipeg Branch, and wife Kat had a 7 lb 14 oz baby boy on July 26th.

It’s almost hard to believe that someone could have one career that spans six decades, but Wilhelm Fischer has just completed such a feat. Years with Julian, then the Peerless companies, and finally Flynn Canada, are coming to an end. Wilhelm has decided it’s time to retire after some fifty-plus years.
Our agreement with VicWest (see Fall Flash), has lead to another contract with PCL Constructors; the supply and installation of the insulated metal wall and roof cladding on the recent addition to the Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga (above). The contract required that the project be built while the existing facilities at the hospital remained operational. Reg McCarthy was Flynn’s Project Manager.

Flynn’s Wilhelm Fischer retires after six decades
Wilhelm completed his metal apprenticeship prior to immigrating to Canada from Germany in 1957. He was in the country for just 3 days when he started to work at Julian Roofing. His skills include, but are not limited to: sheet metal fabrication and installation, mechanical and electrical, vehicle and equipment maintenance and design, welding and structural work, roofing, and roofing service. He always generously took the time to educate the people around him. Through it all he never really considered his work a job. It was difficult for anyone to get into work before him in the mornings. Holidays were a rarity, sick days were unheard of, and he always, always took pride in his trade. Wilhelm’s abilities, his loyalty to the company, and his strength of character, earned him a kind of respect from his coworkers and our clients that is very rare. He leaves behind shoes nearly impossible to fill. All of us at Flynn wish you a long, healthy, and happy retirement. We’re going to miss you!

Architects The Ziedlar Partnership of Toronto are doing a great job of blending the natural materials used in turn of the century architecture with new natural Zinc panels on the new University College Residence Building at the U of T (below). Flynn’s

Hey! Was it you, Luis? Luis Martins, far right, is pictured here on the Barrel Roof of the new Hammerhead at the GTAA Terminal site in Toronto accepting a $5 bill from D’arcy Gorman (Pier F, Sr Area Superintendent — PCL/Aecon). The payoff was for a bet D’arcy made, that Luis and his crew couldn’t complete an area of approximately 30,000 sq ft of roofing on the barrel roof in three days. Well… they did, and Luis bought the guys a couple of boxes of TimBits with the winnings. Right, Luis?
Project Manager, Todd Deforest, is responsible for supplying and installing of some 60,000 sq ft of RheinZink preweathered panels complete with Z-Bars, polyiso “Energy Shield” insulation and Blueskin vapour retarder. Brian Decker, Foreman, is overseeing site production on this very limited access project.

Big Box Cladding: Still Big Business
Ontario’s economy, arguably the economic engine of the country, continues to grow. Flynn is playing a major role in this market as industrial growth in the Toronto area expands into Brampton, Milton, and other outlying communities. Reg McCarthy is Project Manager of one such project. Flynn Canada provided more than 260,000 square feet of 4-ply built-up roofing, as well as 91,000 square feet of insulated metal cladding on the recently completed new offices and warehouses of Ryerson Tull, built by Menkes Developments.
A fine mix of exposed and hidden fastener profiles were used on the project, which sits just off the new 407 commute route, east of Erin Mills Parkway, just west of Mississauga.

Todd Deforest has joined Toronto Roofing Production, from his position in Metals. We would also like to introduce the following new employees to the Flynn family: In the Toronto Branch, we welcome Michael Adcock (Service Department), Anna Chernin (Administrator, National Accounts), Gasper Da Costa (Roofing Department), Chris Hunter (Service Department), Ken Meyer (Construction Manager, Toronto Metals), Fiona Tufa (Engineering Department), and Ralph Wilkie (Service Department). Hamilton Branch welcomes Bill McManus as Service Manager, Stephen Patti as Superintendent, and Manny Alexandre — who becomes Hamilton Branch’s fifth Service Crew Foreman. And last but not least, Ken Mahoney (Toronto) is back in the Flash. We are pleased to announce that Ken has served his sentence as an Estimator, and has now moved on to National Accounts. Was this a result of his “pitch-forking” of John McManus (above) during a hockey game a couple of months ago? Well, OK… so it wasn’t Ken’s fault, just a stray puck. But now that’s the look of a hockey player!
Congratulations! Hamilton Roofing Superintendent Pat Banning and wife Lisa had their first child, Kayla, born April 14th, 7 lbs 11 oz. (Congratulations also to Uncle Stephen Patti.) Hamilton Roofing Foreman Carlos Costa and wife Elizabeth had a son, Carlos Antonio, on May 8th; 8 lbs 1 oz (a little brother for Sophia). Uncle Pedro Costa and fiancée Kelly married June 17th.
A special woman A number of months ago Rose Hay, Administrator, London Branch, was faced with a personal dilemma that none of us would want to deal with. Rose’s mother was advised that she would need to receive a kidney transplant. For those who know Rose, her selfless solution wasn’t a surprise: “I’ll just give her one of mine”. Rose and her mother underwent the serious procedure in mid-July. We are happy to report that both are doing well! We congratulate Rose on her courage and compassion, and wish both her and her mother the very best.
Hamilton Branch “tees-up” The Hamilton Branch got in a little R&R this past June, as they had their annual golf day at the Chippewa Creek Golf & Country Club. Most of the Branch staff (and spouses) were able to make it out for a great day of fun and camaraderie on the links.

Maritimes Feature project:
Halifax International Airport Expansion contract awarded to Flynn
Flynn Halifax recently won a contract worth more than $2 million; to supply and install metal panels and cladding on the challenging new Halifax International Airport Expansion (Commuter / Hold Bag Screening Facility & Transborder Facility), pictured at top and below. The project is well underway, as liner panel is installed and the first architectural Accumet 2000 composite wall panels were delivered on-site in July. There is also insulated metal cladding on the penthouses. We are expected to complete our contract by March, 2006. The Construction Manager is PCL, who represents the Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA). The Senior Construction Manager for PCL is Curtis Paddock, who Stan
Maciboric (Regina Branch Manager) worked with at the New Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. (Thanks for “softening him up” for us Stan.) Steven Pass is Project Manager for Flynn, while Robert Mackinnon is our Site Superintendent. More than 66,000 square feet of silver and dark bronze metallic composite panel (some 3,700 panels) will be designed, fabricated, and installed. In addition, another 10,000 square feet of hidden fastener sandwich wall cladding with semi-rigid insulation and liner is required. Architects for the south end (commuter) are CBCL and Scott Associates. Architects for the north end (Transborder) are William Nycum and Associates.

The Halifax Branch would like to express a big Maritime welcome to our latest additions to the Flynn family: Julie Lariviere joins us as Project Coordinator , Metal Products, and Stu Green has joined us as the Regional Risk Manager for the Maritimes. Stu has been with us since August of last year on a consultant/contract basis. Stu comes to us with extensive experience in construction
and industrial settings. He holds a CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation). Prior to being involved in safety, Stu had his own construction company and is a carpenter by trade.
