The Dean originates as a small creek high in the Chilcotin Plateau in central British Columbia. It makes its way to the Pacific Ocean through the Nimpo and Anahim Lakes area, where many rapids and waterfalls prevent steelhead and salmon from moving higher. So the fish population is concentrated in the lower and middle parts of Dean River. The Steelhead Summer Run begins in June and ends at the end of September. A canyon near the mouth of the middle section prevents the weaker fish from ascending. Only the strong steelheads, king salmon and coho salmon make it through the canyon to the middle section of the Dean.
Getting a place to fish on the Dean River is a great privilege. We have my friend Peter Jones to thank for giving us the opportunity. Christoph and I had a great week with lots of fun, good food, perfect service and no fewer than 24 Steelheads.
