JULY, 2023

Dear readers,

Our star this month hails from our own beautiful city of Seattle - none other than the extraordinary Heidi Fish, whose talent has graced the pages of Sports Illustrated. Heidi's unique swimsuit designs, imbued with elegance and finesse, have made waves in the fashion world. Her interview is nothing short of a masterclass in design excellence.

Another gem in the Emerald City, the indomitable entrepreneur and philanthropist Menka Soni, shares her journey with us. Her tenacity and passion for making a difference in the world are a testament to her character. Soni's story, we hope, will light a spark of inspiration for our readers.

We're also honored to feature the indomitable spirit of Queer Eye's Wesley Hamilton. Hamilton's story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of positive thinking. He's not just transforming lives on the screen, but also making a significant impact off-screen.

A little south of us, in the heart of Los Angeles, resides the brilliant Sebby Raw. This lauded fashion photographer is known for his unique ability to capture beauty in its rawest form. His arresting visuals add a whole new dimension to the fashion landscape.

From the magic behind the camera to the magic in the kitchen, our issue takes a delightful culinary turn with The Nomadic Cook, Chef Travis Petersen. Chef Petersen's innovative approach to cuisine will tempt your taste buds while offering a unique perspective on food and fashion's symbiotic relationship.

Of course, a July issue would be incomplete without an homage to summer fashion. This month, we're thrilled to spotlight swimsuits by black designers who bring fresh perspectives and vibrant styles that embody the joy of the season.

As for those who love to blend the ethereal with the trendy, we're exploring the fairy core fashion aesthetic - think delicate fabrics, pastel shades, and nature-inspired motifs. This aesthetic is more than a trend; it's a journey into a whimsical style wonderland.

In our ongoing mission to foster inclusivity and support in our industry, we delve into creating a culture of openness in the fashion world. It's a deep dive into the heart of our industry, the crucial need for change, and how we can all contribute.

As your Editor, I feel privileged to bring you these compelling stories and insights. Here's to a July filled with sunshine, inspiration, and, of course, fabulous fashion.

Warmly,

Rachele Flalco

Rachele Fialco is not your average makeup artist. With a client list that includes celebrities like Alex Rodriguez, Karen Elson, and Carmen Dell'Orefice, she has made a name for herself in the beauty industry. But her mission goes beyond enhancing physical appearances. She is on a quest to empower women to embrace their inner beauty and become the best versions of themselves.

Born on Independence Day in the US, Rachele has always been an independent spirit. Her love for makeup, hair, and beauty products started at a young age, watching her mother do her makeup and reading fashion magazines. In high school, she was the go-to makeup girl for all her friends. Her professional journey began in New York City, assisting other makeup artists in the fashion industry and attending the Make Up For Ever Academy in Soho.

Rachele's work with celebrities has given her unique insights into the world of fame. She notes that while there are no crazy stories to share, it's always interesting to see how famous people are treated by those around them and how they operate when they are "on" and performing their job.

But Rachele's passion extends beyond the surface. Her new podcast, Inner Beauty Code, emphasizes that beauty goes beyond the skin. Inspired by her own journey of selfreflection and overcoming struggles with low self-esteem, limiting beliefs, and negative self-talk, she hopes to inspire other women to pursue their dreams and live a life being authentically themselves from a place of internal freedom. Rachele's approach to beauty and confidence is influenced

by her time spent between Palm Beach, Florida, and London. She notes that while there are cultural differences, the desire for a sense of belonging and acceptance is universal. Her experiences in the UK have expanded her view of beauty and enabled her to see how people from other cultures express their creativity and individuality through their external appearance.

As an advocate for personal development and overall wellness, Rachele shares some game-changing routines that have helped her in terms of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. These include moving her body daily, practicing yoga, being mindful of her diet, spending time alone for self-reflection, and preparing for her day the night before to eliminate resistance and stress.

Rachele's experience in the fashion and music industries has given her a unique perspective on how these worlds intersect with beauty. She notes that makeup and hair trends are greatly influenced by what you see on the runways and what you see musicians and other famous people doing. She is excited by how social media has made it possible for ordinary people to become "famous" and

grow multimillion-dollar empires and brands by posting. In terms of relationships, Rachele emphasizes the importance of self-love, self-acceptance, and setting boundaries. She believes that we teach other people how to treat us through our boundaries or lack thereof. Currently single but dating, she is careful to maintain her own life and not lose herself in a relationship.

Rachele's journey as a makeup artist and influencer has been filled with rewarding moments. One that stands out is her experience with a mother of two who felt she had lost herself after having her children. Helping this woman start her beauty routine and feel attractive again sparked Rachele's desire to help women not feel that way anymore. Rachele is also a strong advocate for sustainability and ecofriendliness in the beauty industry. She supports limiting waste created in the beauty industry and appreciates the advances that have been made in eco-friendly and sustainable products since she started doing makeup. In today's digital age, Rachele stays current with countless beauty and makeup trends circulating on social media. She discerns whichtrends are worth trying and incorporating into her work by deciphering who is selling a product and who is sharing what they like and what works. She tries new trends on herself and her clients or models, depending on what it is.

When asked about the emerging trend of AI makeup artists, Rachele finds it interesting and cool. She believes that while AI can help with color matching and product recommendations, nothing can replace the experience of

actually applying a product to the skin.

Looking ahead, Rachele plans to continue her work as a makeup artist and is considering going to school for her masters in the UK. She remains active on her social media accounts, @rachelefialcobeauty and @innerbeautyqueen, where she shares more personal things about herself. If she had to choose a different career path, Rachele would have chosen Psychology and Astrology, as she is fascinated by what motivates and influences people to make the decisions they do in life. She also would have loved to have been a triple threat actress, singer, dancer!

Rachele's journey is a testament to her belief that beauty goes beyond the surface. Through her work and her new podcast, Inner Beauty Code, she is on a mission to inspire women to embrace their inner beauty and become the best versions of themselves.

For a peek into Rachele's daily life, check out her feature on Mogul Magazine's "What's In Your Bag" series. From her iPhone and LV wallet to her Laneige Lip Balm and makeup essentials, Rachele carries items that keep her organized and ready for anything. The most surprising thing she carries? A rose quartz and a smokey quartz, reflecting her spiritual side.

Try Faircore this Summer

Once upon a time, in a world where fashion and fantasy intertwine, an aesthetic emerged that encapsulates the whimsical charm of the ethereal realm. Welcome to the enchanting universe of Fairycore Aesthetic fashion, a style as magical as it sounds.

Fairycore, also known as Fairy Kei or Fairycore, is a fashion aesthetic drawing inspiration from the delicate and whimsical world of fairies, nature, and all things magical. It's a style that encourages you to embrace your inner child, to dream, and to believe in the magic of the universe.

The Fairycore aesthetic is characterized by its pastel color palette, often featuring hues of soft pink, lavender, mint green, and baby blue. These colors are reminiscent of the soft, dreamy tones found in fairy tales and children's storybooks, evoking a sense of nostalgia and whimsy.

Clothing items in the Fairycore aesthetic often include flowing skirts, oversized sweaters, and delicate blouses, all adorned with motifs such as flowers, stars, and of course, fairies. Lace, tulle, and chiffon are common materials, adding to the ethereal and delicate nature of the style.

Accessories play a significant role in this aesthetic as well. Think flower crowns, butterfly clips, and jewelry featuring natural elements like leaves and stones. Shoes are often comfortable and practical, with Mary Janes and ballet flats being popular choices.

But Fairycore isn't just about the clothes you wear; it's about the atmosphere you create. It's about surrounding yourself with items that spark joy and evoke a sense of wonder. This could be anything from a collection of crystals to a bouquet of wildflowers, or even a whimsically decorated room with fairy lights and soft, plush pillows.

The beauty of Fairycore lies in its ability to transport you to a different world, a world where magic is real, and fairies dance in the moonlight. It's a style that encourages you to dream, to believe in the impossible, and to embrace the magic that exists within you and around you. The origins of Fairycore can be traced back to the Harajuku fashion scene in Japan, where styles like Lolita, Decora, and Fairy Kei laid the groundwork for this whimsical aesthetic. Over time, Fairycore has evolved and been embraced by fashion enthusiasts worldwide, each

adding their unique twist to the style.

If you're looking to add a touch of magic to your wardrobe, why not give Fairycore a try? There are many online stores and independent designers who specialize in Fairycore fashion. Brands like Dolls Kill, Lazy Oaf, and Bonne Chance Collections offer a range of Fairycoreinspired pieces that can help you get started on your magical fashion journey.

For those who love DIY, Fairycore offers endless opportunities to get creative. From hand-painting fairy motifs on your clothes to crafting your own flower crowns, the possibilities are as limitless as your imagination.

So, put on your favorite pastel dress, adorn your hair with flowers, and step into the enchanting world of Fairycore. And remember, fashion is about expressing yourself and having fun. So, don't be afraid to let your imagination run wild and embrace the magic of Fairycore. As you embark on your Fairycore journey, we'd love to hear about your experiences. Share your Fairycore outfits, DIY projects, or favorite Fairycore brands with us on social media using the hashtag #FairyCoreFashion. After all, as Roald Dahl once said, "Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."

Creating a Culture of Openness and Support in the Fashion Industry

WELLNESS 24 Nfm

The fashion industry is known for its demanding and fast-paced environment, which can take a toll on the mental health of those who work in it. According to a study by the British Fashion Council, 75% of fashion industry professionals have experienced mental health issues at some point in their careers.

This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Mental health challenges can have a devastating impact on people's lives, both personally and professionally. They can lead to decreased productivity, absenteeism, and even job loss.

In order to create a more mentally healthy fashion industry, it is important to create a culture of openness and support. This means creating an environment where people feel comfortable talking about their mental health challenges. It also means providing mental health resources to employees and training managers on how to support employees with mental health issues.

Here are some specific steps that can be taken to create a culture of openness and support in the fashion industry:

• Provide mental health resources to employees: This could include providing access to counseling services, offering stress management workshops, or distributing educational materials about mental health.

• Train managers on how to support employees with mental health issues: Managers need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, and they need to know how to respond appropriately. They should also be trained on how to create a supportive work environment for employees with mental health issues.

• Create a culture of acceptance and understanding: This means creating an environment where people feel comfortable talking about their mental health challenges without fear of judgment. It also means creating an environment where people feel supported and valued, regardless of their mental health status.

• Creating a culture of openness and support in the fashion industry is not easy, but it is essential. By taking these steps, we can help to create a more mentally healthy industry for everyone.

Yet, while the call for change echoes across the industry as a whole, it's important to remember

the power that lies within each individual. Each one of us has the capacity to contribute to this shift in our own unique way. Navigating the demands of the fashion industry can be tough, but remember that it's okay to prioritize your well-being amidst it all. Here are some nurturing strategies that you can employ to safeguard your mental health while working in this high-paced industry:

• Seek help when needed: If you're feeling stressed or anxious, it's crucial to seek help from a mental health professional. Reach out to therapists or psychologists who can provide you with the necessary tools to manage your mental health effectively.

• Implement self-care routines: Taking care of your physical health can have a direct impact on your mental health. This can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, ensuring you get adequate sleep, and engaging in activities you enjoy.

• Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques: Techniques such as yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises can help manage stress and promote mental well-being.

• Create a work-life balance: Ensure you set boundaries between work and personal life. This can be achieved by setting specific work hours, taking regular breaks, and making time for hobbies and social activities.

• Join or create support networks: Connecting with peers who are going through similar experiences can provide a great source of comfort and advice. This can be through online forums, social media groups, or local meet-ups.

Embracing these steps can help usher in an era of mental well-being across the fashion industry. A vibrant culture of mental health doesn't just benefit individuals; it has the potential to enhance productivity and creativity on a grand scale. Moreover, an industry that values mental health is one that shines brightly, attracting and retaining the most dedicated and passionate talents.

If you're navigating the challenging waters of the fashion industry and find yourself grappling with your mental health, please remember you don't have to bear this burden alone. There is a network of resources available to provide the support you need. You can reach out to your doctor, engage in therapy, or consult a mental health professional.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-2738255) is available to you at any time. Your struggle is real, your feelings valid, and there is help available. You are seen, you are valued, and most importantly, you are not alone.

Unveiling the World Through Kate Whyte's Lens

Kate Whyte, the renowned photographer from Canada, has truly made her mark in the photography industry. Her journey from graphic design to photography sheds light on how diverse creative interests can shape a unique artistic perspective.

The Influence of Graphic Design on Photography

Kate's background in graphic design has significantly influenced her approach to photography. Drawing parallels between the two disciplines, she shares, "Photography and design follow a lot of the same principles, such as composition, balance, and hierarchy, and they are both about visual storytelling, so it’s a pretty natural transition." This seamless integration of skills from graphic design has enriched her photography, allowing her to craft visually captivating images with a strong sense of storytelling.

Moreover, the discipline and perfectionism cultivated during her graphic design training have carried over into her photography. Kate treats each photograph as an art piece, meticulously crafting and polishing it to perfection. A BEACON OF RESILIENCE Wesley HAMILTON

Meet Wesley Hamilton, a man whose story is a testament to the power of resilience, selflove, and the human spirit. In 2012, Hamilton's life took an unexpected turn when he sustained a spinal cord injury from multiple gunshot wounds, leaving him paralyzed. At the time, he was already grappling with low self-esteem and weight issues. The news of his paralysis was a hard pill to swallow, but it was also the catalyst for a transformative journey that would redefine his life.

The Journey of Transformation

Hamilton's early years post-injury were challenging, but he found strength in his weakness. He embarked on a journey of self-improvement, focusing on his physical health, which in turn boosted his mental and emotional well-being. The result? A dramatic weight loss that saw him drop to 135 pounds, a feat he had never achieved before his injury. This accomplishment sparked a profound shift in Hamilton's mindset, helping him realize that his physical disability did not define his capabilities. His mind, he discovered, was limitless.

The Birth of DBNR

This revelation led to the creation of Disabled But Not Really (DBNR), an organization driven by Hamilton's personal experiences. DBNR aims to help individuals with physical disabilities find their identity post-injury. The program has been a resounding success, with over 90% of participants becoming more engaged with society and contributing to their daily growth.

DBNR's mission is to forge a diverse journey of courage and confidence for individuals who live with a disability. They work with people living with disabilities, the companies they may work for, and the communities in which they live. They provide inclusive training and support blended environments that

work best for everybody.

Overcoming Fitness Challenges

Hamilton's journey into fitness wasn't without its challenges. He faced issues with accessibility and lack of knowledge on how to adapt workouts to his needs. However, he persevered, starting his fitness journey at a local rehabilitation center and gradually venturing into other accessible spaces. He believes the fitness industry could do more to accommodate all body types, advocating for better access, equipment, and staff training.

The Queer Eye Experience

Hamilton's inspiring journey caught the attention of the popular Netflix show, "Queer Eye." After a nomination and several interviews, Hamilton found himself on the show, an experience he describes as a breath of fresh air. His return to the show to help another individual, Speedy, highlighted the compassion and empathy of the "Queer Eye" team and their support for his mission.

Inspiring Others Through Motivational Speaking

As a motivational speaker, Hamilton uses his personal story to inspire others, emphasizing self-love and acceptance as the keys to creating the life one desires. His message has resonated with audiences worldwide, changing lives and inspiring

Nfm 53

transformation.

Expanding DBNR's Reach

Hamilton's work with DBNR has not gone unnoticed. A generous $1 million donation allowed the organization to open a wellness center. Future plans include creating a larger facility that serves everyone and launching a pilot program for disabled entrepreneurs.

The Impact of DBNR

Hamilton's greatest achievement, however, is the lives he has touched and changed since starting DBNR. His daughter, Nevaeh, has been a significant source of strength for him. She saw past his disability from a young age, inspiring him to do the same. Hamilton's focus on fitness is now geared towards maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle so he can continue his impactful work.

Advice for Others

Hamilton's advice to others navigating similar paths is to find community and understand that they are not alone. He emphasizes that recovery is a process, and awareness leads to acceptance and peace of mind. His positive mindset, he says, is a daily choice, and he views adversity as an opportunity to learn

and educate others.

The Power of the Mind

Hamilton's journey has taught him that the mind is the most powerful part of the body. With control over it, he believes anyone can create the life they want. He shared this message during his TedX talk, which he describes as a great platform to speak one's truth and reach communities everywhere.

Future Plans and Adventures

Hamilton's future plans include traveling the world to learn about accessibility in other places and spreading his message of self-love. He's no stranger to adventure, having done adaptive mountain biking in the rainforest. And when it's time for a cheat meal? Hamilton goes for a classic double cheeseburger with fries.

Wesley Hamilton's story is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the limitless potential of the mind. His work continues to inspire and empower individuals worldwide, proving that physical limitations do not define one's capabilities or worth. Heidi fish

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, it's a rare delight to encounter a designer who has carved out a niche as distinctive as Heidi Fish. As a journalist for Nfm Magazine, I had the privilege of delving into the creative world of this renowned swimwear designer. Heidi's story is a testament to passion, perseverance, and a unique vision that has seen her become a celebrated name in swimwear design.

Interview & Article by Wynn Wilder

Heidi Fish's foray into the realm of fashion began at the tender age of two, under the tutelage of her grandparents, both of whom were skilled sewers. Her grandmother Henrietta, a German designer whose creations found a home at Saks in the 30s and 40s, instilled in her the importance of mastering a trade. Heidi's formative years were spent sewing alongside her other grandmother on the farm, crafting outfits that would later inspire her swimwear designs.

Recalling her early days designing and selling her swimsuits, Heidi explained, "In my 20s, I used to design

outfits and would often see similar ensembles to my designs on various magazine covers a few months later. When it came to swimwear, after having five sons, I struggled to find a swimsuit that fit my body type while shopping. That's when I decided to make a swimsuit for myself. I did, and I loved it. I received many compliments and started making swimwear for my friends.

Within a few months, a whole new collection was brought to life. At that time, my life revolved around selling my designs on Alki Beach in West Seattle, but only on sunny days. The first year

was 1998, and my swimwear was displayed under one umbrella. By the second year, I recall using three umbrellas."

Heidi's first significant breakthrough came when she was chosen by Gen Art, a foundation for emerging artists, to showcase her retro 40's fashion with a 90s twist at the Shrine in Beverly Hills. This opportunity catapulted her into the limelight, and her designs have since graced several Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues, including the recent 2023 issue. This accomplishment is a testament to her relentless pursuit of her craft and her ability to create designs that

are both visually stunning and functional. Heidi's designs are not just about aesthetics; they are about celebrating the female form and creating swimwear that women feel confident and comfortable in.

Heidi also shared a memorable story about her first feature in Sports Illustrated. "I had been sending lookbooks and definitely not getting anywhere. So I started sending swimwear samples knowing I most likely will never see a return. At that time, Diane Smith was the Editor and Chief of SI. She finally acknowledged my designs when I sent in a high-end seashell bikini. I used FedEx to send it. She called me upon opening this up and she was so amazed. It was at that time that storylines would come in every year. With Diane, she would give new designers one storyline to work on. The first time was a cheerleading theme. To see my name in this issue was so amazing; it was also released on my birthday, so it was even more exciting."

Heidi's design process is as meticulous as it is creative. From sketching to pattern making, prototyping, and finally production, each step is carefully executed to ensure the final product is both fashionable and useful. Her designs are unique and different from the mainstream, a quality that allows her to stand out in the competitive fashion industry. Looking ahead, Heidi shared that some of the key swimwear trends to look out for this season include denim looks, Barbieinspired designs, and retro styles with a cheeky bottom. As Heidi mentions, "Turquoise with a hue of 58 Nfm

green [is also in]. Why? To remind us all that our waters are beautiful; let's keep it that way." Sustainability also plays a significant role in her designs, with materials like bamboo, hemp, and rubber being used in environmentally responsible ways.

When asked about the future of fashion in Seattle, Heidi expressed her vision of merging music and fashion, much like in Europe. She believes that Seattle, known for its great new music and music legends, has the potential to become a hub for fashion as well. Heidi Fish's journey is a testament to the power of passion and tenacity. Her designs have not only graced the pages of prestigious magazines but have also brought joy to many women around the world. As we wrapped up our interview, I was left with a sense of admiration for this remarkable woman who continues to redefine the world of swimwear design.

Sustainable Seafood

A Guide to Eating Fish with a Conscience

Seafood is a delicious and nutritious food choice, but it's important to be aware of the environmental impact of fishing. Overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution pose significant threats to our oceans, and our seafood choices can make a meaningful difference.

What is Sustainable Seafood?

Sustainable seafood refers to fish and shellfish caught or farmed in manners that ensure the long-term health and vitality of marine ecosystems. This means using fishing methods that minimize harm to marine life and avoiding fish species that are overfished.

Why is it important to choose sustainable seafood?

The demand for seafood is increasing, which is putting a strain on our oceans. If we don't choose sustainable seafood, we could risk depleting fish populations and damaging marine ecosystems.

The Environmental Impact of Unsustainable Fishing

Unsustainable fishing practices can have a devastating impact on marine ecosystems. Overfishing can lead to

the depletion of fish populations, which can disrupt food chains and have a ripple effect throughout the ecosystem. Habitat destruction, such as the destruction of coral reefs, can also have a negative impact on marine life. And pollution, such as oil spills and runoff from agricultural fertilizers, can contaminate marine habitats and kill marine life.

The Socioeconomic Impact of Unsustainable Fishing

Unsustainable fishing practices can also have a negative impact on the livelihoods of people who rely on fishing for their livelihood. When fish populations are depleted, fishermen may be forced to fish in more remote areas or use more destructive fishing methods in order to make a living. This can lead to increased conflict between fishermen, as well as environmental damage.

Sustainable Fishing Practices

There are a number of sustainable fishing practices that can help to reduce the environmental impact of fishing.

These include:

• Using selective fishing gear: This means using fishing gear that is designed to catch only the target species, while minimizing the catch of non-target species.

FOOD &
108 Nfm
DRINK

[Examples of selective fishing gear: gillnets, trawls, and longlines]

• Fishing in seasons: This means only fishing during the times of year when fish populations are at their highest, which helps to ensure that fish have a chance to reproduce. [Examples of fish species typically in season: salmon, cod, and halibut]

• Using fish aggregating devices (FADs): FADs are floating objects that attract fish, which can make it easier to catch them without using destructive fishing methods.

• Reducing bycatch: Bycatch is the unintended capture of non-target species during fishing. Reducing bycatch can help to protect marine life and maintain healthy fish populations.

Certifications and Labels

There are a number of certification labels that consumers can look for to help them identify sustainable seafood.

These include:

1. Marine Stewardship Council (MSC): The MSC is an independent organization that certifies seafood caught or farmed in a sustainable manner.

2. Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC): The ASC is an independent organization that certifies aquaculture products that are produced in a responsible manner.

3. Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP): The BAP is a certification program that is administered by the Global Aquaculture Alliance. It is designed to ensure that aquaculture products are produced in a responsible manner.

Seasonal Seafood Guides

Choosing seafood that is in season can significantly contribute to the sustainability of our marine ecosystems. Similar to land-based agriculture, the abundance and availability of certain fish species vary throughout the year due to their breeding cycles, migration patterns, and other environmental factors. Here's a deeper dive into why eating seasonal seafood is crucial and resources that can guide you:

Why Eating Seasonal Seafood is Important

Promotes biodiversity: When we consume a variety of seafood that's seasonally available, we support a broader range of species in our diet. This diversifies demand, so we don't over-rely on a few types of fish, which can lead to overfishing.

Supports reproductive cycles: Allowing fish to be harvested during certain times of the year, usually after their spawning seasons, ensures they have had a chance to reproduce. This ensures future generations of the species.

Encourages local economies: When in season, local

seafood is often available, thereby supporting local fishing communities.

Resources for Seasonal Seafood Guides

Several organizations have dedicated resources to inform consumers about which species are in season at any given time. Here are a few:

Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch: This renowned program provides consumers with easy-to-understand seafood recommendations, indicating which species are "Best Choices," "Good Alternatives," and which ones to "Avoid." Their recommendations are updated as new information becomes available, and they provide regional guides that include seasonality.

Marine Conservation Society's Good Fish Guide: This UK-based organization offers an online guide where you can check the sustainability, including the seasonality, of common seafood species.

FishChoice: A comprehensive sustainable seafood sourcing tool. FishChoice, in partnership with leading ocean conservation organizations, provides a seafood buying guide that includes seasonality as a factor.

Remember, availability of seasonal seafood can vary by region. Always consider where the seafood is coming from and if it's sourced sustainably. Informed choices about when and what kind of seafood to consume can help protect our oceans and the diversity of life they support.

Personal Testimony

Bill T., a fishmonger, used to sell a lot of fish that he knew wasn't sustainable. But then he learned more about the environmental impact of overfishing, and he decided that he couldn't sell it anymore. He now only sells sustainable seafood, and he's proud to do it. He says, "I know that I'm making a difference, and that feels good."

Conclusion

By making informed choices about the seafood we eat, we can help to protect our oceans and the marine life that depends on them. There are a number of things we can do to choose sustainable seafood, including looking for certified seafood, eating seafood in season, and supporting sustainable fishing practices. By taking these steps, we can all make a difference.

We encourage you to start incorporating sustainable seafood into your diet today and spread the word about the importance of these choices.

Chauncey 'Big Hit' Hollis Sr., once incarcerated, is now a free man. His journey to freedom, however, was far from straightforward. It was a path marked by a terrifying incident, a grueling legal process, and a fight against a system that seemed stacked against him. In a recent conversation with Big Hit and Chloe Cheyenne, founder of the digital activism platform COMMUNITYx, we delved into the details of his story. What Happened to Big Hit?

In July 2014, Big Hit was found guilty of a hit-and-run, but the situation happened months prior. I asked Big Hit to detail what led up to this charge. “I was getting robbed, without saying any names… but I know the individuals,” said Big Hit, recollecting the memory from years ago. “This ain’t the first time, people tried to rob me, they were shooting at me and they got what they wanted.”

The moment had to feel like a blur, as Big Hit fought for his life while being shot at as the perpetrator was trying to rob Big Hit. Months later Big Hit was in Chicago where he was pulled over and found out he had a warrant for his arrest. Big Hit was not aware he had a warrant for the hit and run that took place six months prior to the pullover. Big Hit was then brought into jail, where he bailed out.

Finding A Defense Lawyer

Then came the grueling process of working with a lawyer. “One of my homies had introduced me to a lawyer… it was a trip, and he had a good argument he was fighting for me, but he got nervous” During a

Hit-Boy's Dad Big Hit Is Free!

break in the court session, Big Hit’s lawyer went to Big Hit and told him, “I didn’t know it was this serious man, I don’t think I can do it, I think you should run,” Big Hit told me this laughing, I shared the laugh, as the whole scenario was ridiculous for the lawyer to say “You should run”. You can hear the shock in Big Hit's voice as he recollected this part of the story, ”I’m like what? I just paid you all this money. Gave you a clean-ass 1950 old school, and you’re telling me to run?” Ultimately, Big Hit told the lawyer he was not going to run, as he put too much into this case to run.

Despite the mental fortitude of Big Hit, his lawyer had a different plan, “We went back into the courtroom and told the judge the lawyer wanted to get off the case… the judge wouldn’t let him(the lawyer) get off the case.” After that situation, Big Hit fired his lawyer and got a new one. The new lawyer then wanted a hundred thousand, In which Big Hit “gave him like 12 thousand, gave him like 4 thousand every week, as payments.” Big Hit, told the lawyer he didn’t have anything, so he gave the lawyer the watch he had on, then followed the watch by giving the lawyer a 1965 Mustang, the issue of giving became never ending to Big Hit. “We were cool but at the same time, we were going to court everytime we go to court this dude wants something.” In total Big Hit stated he gave the lawyer $30,000 cash and the rest was paid through cars and exotic watches. Big Hit didn’t know the actual value of those exotic watches but gave them to the lawyer, as Big Hit just wanted to stay out of jail. Despite all this effort, the lawyer tried to get Big Hit to plead guilty. Big Hit was getting frustrated with his lawyer and the

HUMAN INTEREST 110 Nfm

lawyer constantly pressured Big Hit to plead guilty. “I'm paying you to go to trial, I am not pleading guilty” This then resulted in a clash between the two parties, and the disagreement was far from over. Big Hit turned down what he called a “sweet deal” which he regretted turning down at the time as he saw the cross, and felt it was a “kangaroo court”. They ended up going to trial and before the trial, the lawyer demanded another 75k from Big Hit. Big Hit tried to fire his lawyer, but the judge refused as it was too close to trial. Big Hit then claimed the lawyer pulled him aside and told him “If you don’t get me off the case we are just going to put you in a mental institution and shoot you up with some drugs, having you walk slow where you don’t even know your name” Something Big Hit claims he saw happen to people he knew while he was in federal prison. Ultimately, Big Hit got his lawyer off the case and he fought it himself.

Big Hit vs the Judge

Big Hit's knowledge of the law helped him fight the case, Big Hit felt the judge had a vendetta against him, he felt the judge was pushing for extra years. Big Hit said at most he should be doing 3 years and at the minimum 16 months, instead the court was pushing for Big Hit to plead guilty to a 5-year charge, something that frustrated Big Hit. Big Hit claims the judge didn’t go by the law and gave enhancements that the Judge knew weren’t legal.

Big Hit’s dispute was the 5-year GBI enhancement.

GBI is short for Great Bodily Injury a California Penal Code that adds extra time to one’s sentence. Big Hit explained the enhancement did not apply to him. The court claimed that Big Hit not helping the people he hit when fleeing from gunshots caused greater bodily to those that were hit. Cheyenne then said the reason this can not be applied to Big Hit’s case is that there was nothing that any bystanders or “someone on the offense or defense of the case” could have done to make the “condition” of the people in the other car better. Big Hit followed that up by noting there were a lot of people on the scene as they were already calling for an ambulance and the police immediately.

Where is Big Hit Now?

Big Hit is currently fighting the actual conviction, not just the enhancements that the judge wrongfully added. “They just took the GBI off and the 2-year enhancements for priors which the Judge knew he couldn’t give me because they were misdemeanors, So I got the 7 years off,” Big Hit told us that if it wasn’t for the GBI, Big Hit could’ve been released back in 2016 instead of 2023.

Big Hit's story is a testament to resilience in the face of adversity. Despite the challenges he faced, he refused to back down and continued to fight for his freedom. His release in 2023, seven years later than it could have been, is a stark reminder of the flaws in our justice system.
