Flo's Mag Issue Five

Page 1

www.aerialdanceacademy.com hello@aerialdanceacademy.com @aerialdanceacademyuk

Editor’s note

Welcome to our last issue of 2025! This issue marks a year since the first FLO’S MAG rolled off the printing press. This time last year I was tentatively introducing the concept, hoping people would read what I’d put together. And you did! And you’ve kept on reading; seeking out each issue, keeping/collecting them, picking them up for your friends. I couldn’t be more thrilled by the response and the way the mag has evolved. Our print run has doubled since the first issue, and we’ve expanded our distribution area beyond the boroughs of Fareham and Gosport. We’ve distributed in Wickham since issue one (even though it’s technically Winchester) and we’ve since ventured over the borders to Southsea and Hamble.

My aim with all my work; curating this magazine and coordinating my monthly market in Portchester, is to serve local communities. The mag and markets offer an insight into what’s available nearby. The magazine is free and it’s free to attend the market, what readers/visitors choose to do/buy is down to their individual taste and budget. I want to enhance lives, and bring back a sense of ‘the good old days’.

The market not only offers shopping opportunities, but the chance to meet friends, bump into people, listen to music, eat, drink, sit and chat.

The mag offers a break from the noise of online. Put your phone away, make a drink, sit in your favourite chair and get lost in the pages awhile. It’s micro moments like this that nourish us and keep us healthy in this busy modern age.

Some people think I’m brave printing a magazine. “Isn’t print dead?” they say. I believe, in the same way vinyl isn’t dead... print is ALIVE.

P.S. If you’re a fan of FLO’S MAG and would like to show your appreciation, why not use the QR code to buy me a (virtual) coffee, I would love that.

Finding Freedom Through Fasting

From emotional eating to empowerment, Beatrice Finch shares her journey of healing and self-discovery through soulfully fasting...

For years, my relationship with food was complicated. On the outside, I seemed to be eating reasonably well, but inside, I felt stuck in a cycle of uninspired habits and emotional eating. I was living through an abusive relationship, where coercive control seeped into every aspect of my life. Food became a coping mechanism; sugar was my quick fix when everything got too much.

Looking back, I see how disconnected I was from my own body. A packet of biscuits could numb me for a while, but it was a mask.

Two years ago, I began a journey of selfdevelopment that started with yoga and gently opened the door to something bigger: awareness. As I learned to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with myself, I discovered fasting and it changed everything.

At first, it was curiosity that led me to try. But soon, the benefits became clear. Fasting gave me more than improved energy and health; it gave me confidence, clarity, and freedom. For the first time in years, I felt in tune with my body rather than fighting against it.

Fasting isn’t about dieting or deprivation. Diets promise short-term results but rarely last. Fasting is different, it’s a lifestyle; a natural rhythm of feasting and resting that our bodies are built for.

By embracing this cycle, I discovered a way of living that felt sustainable, balanced, and like my true essence as a human.

Today, my mission is to share this knowledge. So if you are stuck in a rut with eating, want to eat in sync with your body, or just fall back in love with food, I am here to teach you how to fast soulfully.

If you want to hear me speak about it in person I will be at the Spirit Holistic and Wellbeing Fayre at The Brickworks Museum, Swanwick, on 12th October and the Mind, Body and Spirit Experience at Wickham Community Centre on 15th November.

I have created an online course which covers how to prepare to fast, what to eat when you’re not fasting, how to fast in sync with your hormones, what breaks a fast, and loads more. It costs £79, FLO’S MAG readers get 10% off with discount code ‘FLOFAST’.

Connection is King

My passion lies offline. In a world of AI and increasing mental health challenges I think we need to take a few steps back. Humans aren’t evolved for this modern life we find ourselves in. Flo’s Circle doesn’t have a website, it’s about a physical magazine and a market where you can meet the makers; touch and feel the products. We also run quarterly networking events which have become so important within our small business community.

Running a small independent business can be a lonely place. It can involve working at your kitchen table and not seeing a soul all day. It’s often one person having to wear many hats; marketing manager, bookkeeper, admin extraordinaire (not to mention the actual product or service you’re creating or sourcing). We need help and advice and often we can’t afford it, or we just feel overwhelmed. The networking events offer an affordable way to see what others are doing, get advice, give advice, make friends, potentially collaborate etc.

Often people are nervous to go networking. Perhaps it seems corporate? Like you’d be intimidated and out of your depth? But our events aren’t like that. They’re informal and the attendees are the people you see within the pages of this magazine; creatives within the lifestyle sector. Friendly, down-to-earth, passionate humans who are following their dreams and working for themselves. We champion that in all we do.

The events take place in January, April, July and October. Follow Flo’s Circle on socials for details of upcoming events.

Stillness in Sound; A Different Kind of Concert

Imagine lying on your back in a dimly lit hall, a soft mat beneath you, eyes closed. The air vibrates with the overtones of Tibetan singing bowls, their hum washing through your chest. Slowly, the harp begins; its rippling tones weaving through the space, joined by minimalist patterns - loops that evolve like breath, or silences that draw attention to presence itself. The sound asks only that you soften, that you entrain, that you return to rhythm.

Across the UK music is shifting from formal concert halls to intimate, mindful spaces. Lyingdown concerts, deep listening sessions and sound baths invite audiences to experience music not as entertainment, but as a restorative practice.

Scientific studies reveal that music releases dopamine (the brain’s reward chemical) especially during moments of tension and release. Lying down, slowing your breathing and listening to instruments tuned to entrain your nervous system deepens the

effect. Your heartbeat slows, breath steadies, and the body recalibrates. This is embodied listening, where sound becomes like medicine. Paired with Tibetan bowls, the combination of vibration, rhythm, and silence creates a space where the body and mind can restore balance.

Minimalist composers like Philip Glass and John Cage anticipated this decades ago; their looping structures, spacious repetitions and their pauses echo principles found in meditation.

On the South Coast, Soulful Soundbaths brings this vision to life. Founded by professional harpist, Kate, with over 20 years of professional performance experience across the UK and internationallyincluding touring with pop bands like McFly, performing on television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, playing for the Late HM Queen, and collaborating with top orchestras - the practice blends classical training with sound healing techniques.

UPCOMING EVENT: Soulful Soundbath at Damson Hill Cottage, Swanmore. Friday 14th November, 7pm. For full information and more upcoming events visit www.soulfulsoundbaths.com

Private bookings are also available, whether for corporate wellness, team away days, or small gatherings with friends looking to share a restorative and memorable experience together.

Straight Outta the Box... No Nonsense

Our cover art for this issue is by Titchfield-based artist Steve Armon. Steve describes his work as ‘upcycled, recycled, retro cardboard art’. He is inspired by old photographs and he adds his own quirky twists.

This particular piece is inspired by the album cover The Ragpicker’s Dream by Mark Knopfler. “They’ve done the washing up” says Steve. “And they’ve treated themselves to a stout and are having a little dance.”

THE JOY OF PAINTING:

Why Creativity Is Good for Your Soul and Your Social Life

When was the last time you sat down and let yourself play? Not scroll, not work, not tick something off your endless to-do list—but actually lose yourself in something creative, just for the fun of it?

For many of us, the answer is… We can’t even remember. And that’s exactly why picking up a paintbrush might just be the little act of joy you didn’t know you needed.

Painting has this magical way of slowing the world down. The brush gliding across the canvas, the colours blending together—suddenly your mind isn’t racing ahead to tomorrow’s deadlines or yesterday’s worries. You’re right here, in the moment. And research backs it up: engaging in creative activities like painting can lower stress, lift your mood, and even boost serotonin—the feelgood chemical in our brains.

But painting isn’t only about what happens inside. It’s about what happens around you, too.

Something beautiful unfolds when people paint together. Whether you’re at a table with friends, workmates, or even strangers, the laughter bubbles up as soon as the first “wonky line” hits the canvas. You realise quickly that nobody’s there to judge— everyone is wrapped up in their own masterpiece, and the joy is in the process, not the perfection.

This makes painting a surprisingly powerful way to connect. It strips away the pressure to be ‘good’ at something and gives us permission to just be. To relax, to chat, to share a giggle over a brushstroke gone rogue. And in a world that can feel increasingly disconnected, those moments of shared fun really matter.

As the festive season rolls in, painting together takes on an extra sparkle. Imagine swapping your usual Christmas night out for a table filled with canvases, mulled wine in hand, and friends beside you as you paint something bright and joyful. No awkward small talk, no pressure—just genuine fun, creativity, and a keepsake to take home.

And for families and close groups of friends, it can become an even more meaningful way to celebrate. Instead of the same routine dinner, why not create something lasting together? A painting party with loved ones—whether it’s in a public event setting or a private gathering—brings people together in a way that’s fresh, memorable, and nourishing for the soul.

At the heart of it, painting reminds us that we are all creative beings, no matter what stories we’ve told ourselves about ‘not being artistic.’ And sometimes, giving ourselves permission to play is the most radical act of self-care there is.

So if you’re looking for a way to add a little joy to your week—or to plan a Christmas get-together with friends, family, or colleagues that feels different and fun—why not try a paint event? You can join one of our public sessions or even book your own private party for groups of 10+. Either way, you’ll walk away with more than a painting… You’ll leave with memories, laughter, and that happy glow that only creativity can bring.

Painting isn’t only about what happens inside. It’s about what happens around you too

One for Sorrow

Right on the high street in Gosport, One for Sorrow Tattoo Studio isn’t just another tattoo shop, it’s a modern creative space where art, story and self expression converge. Stylish and welcoming, this studio is helping redefine what a tattoo experience can be.

The studio is home to a talented and diverse team of artists, each with their own distinct styles, united by a shared commitment to creating living art that means something; pieces that reflect memory, self expression or transformation.

Stepping into One for Sorrow feels more like entering a boutique art space than a traditional tattoo parlour. The lighting is warm and the energy is calm and collaborative. It’s a space where you’re not just ‘getting a tattoo’ – you’re creating something personal, powerful and enduring.

The studio is proudly inclusive with a thoughtful approach to consultations and custom work. Whether it’s your first tattoo or your fiftieth you’ll feel heard, respected and supported. In an era where tattoos have become mainstream, One for Sorrow doesn’t just follow the trend, it has its own identity.

@summerheathtattoos

Helena works alongside her daughter Summer who spends a lot of time in Berlin and loves anything Rococo. The other artists at One for Sorrow are Ciara and Rolly whose work is showcased above.

Tattooing isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about identity, and in historic Gosport, a town that balances naval grit with creative renewal, this studio feels right at home; grounded, authentic and quietly revolutionary.

The space is run by artist Helena Heath (@helena_heath) who also owns Two for Joy gallery on North Cross Street. In both spaces Helena offers opportunity for collaboration and expression; for both artists and customers. Her work is inspirational and aspirational and she’s a great person to know for local emerging artists.

The Vital Role of Strength Training in Enhancing Longevity

In the pursuit of a long and healthy life, strength training stands out as a cornerstone of wellness. Beyond its wellknown benefits of building muscle and strength, it plays a pivotal role in promoting longevity.

As we age, muscle mass naturally declines in a process known as sarcopenia. This can lead to decreased mobility, increased frailty, and a higher risk of chronic diseases. Strength training, however, counteracts this process by stimulating muscle growth, improving muscle density, and enhancing overall strength.

In addition to muscle health, strength training boosts bone density, which is crucial in preventing osteoporosis and fractures. It also supports metabolic health by improving insulin sensitivity, which can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Moreover, strength training is linked to improved cardiovascular health, as it helps

regulate blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The benefits extend beyond the physical, too; regular strength training can enhance mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression and improving cognitive function.

Incorporating strength training into your routine doesn’t require a gym; simple bodyweight exercises or resistance bands at home can make a significant difference. However at Knott Kinetics we recognise the importance of social connection and community; we have many classes throughout the week to allow you to work on all aspects of strength and conditioning including Pilates and Yoga as well as strength classes for all ages and abilitieswe also provide a roadmap for returning to optimal function following injury.

Embrace strength training as a lifelong commitment to a healthier, longer life.

Fairground Feels.

Nina Burras established her business Missing Chopper in 2015. She lives on Hayling Island with her musician husband Jonny and their young children.

But why MISSING CHOPPER? Nina’s story is too good not to share:

After finishing college Nina went to work a summer season in Ibiza. She inherited the frame of an original 1970s Chopper bike from her landlord who was something of a hoarder. She fixed it up and it was her pride and joy. After leaving the bike in Ibiza over the winter she returned the following spring and was devastated to find it gone. In her desperation, she decided to make missing posters, like if you lose a dear family pet. After a few weeks she got a call:

“Hello, did you make the missing chopper posters?”

“Yes, have you found my bike?”

“No. This is Nando’s. We are looking for a sign painter.”

“So…. you don’t have my bike??”

“No. Are you a sign painter?”

“Um…………. sure!”

So that was that. Nina painted the sign for Nando’s in San Antonio, and by word of mouth dozens of boards and signs for bars and restaurants on the island. She ended up working as a scenic painter for Manumission, a theatrical club night held in Privilege, the biggest super club in the world.

She never did find her beloved bike, but every cloud has a silver lining.

“I am obsessed with clowns and cats.”

“The Gregory Porter sign was a collaboration with Mark Sloper (@mark_illuminati). Gregory Porter is a significant musician to my husband and I, and we were lucky enough to meet him on our anniversary.”

“Our bedroom is a floral overload.”

“The eyes in the My Dog Sighs piece are mine, with my favourite beach in Ibiza reflected in them.”

“We let local graffiti artist Soak loose in our garden.”

“I studied art, design and fashion.”

“I buy furniture on Facebook Marketplace and customise it.”

“All the brass bits in the toilet were from my gran’s house.”

“Soak also painted the Cyril Sneer piece (from 1980s series The Raccoons) and the piece depicting Eugene from Bob’s Burgers. These pieces are a nod to our sons Cyril and Eugene!”

A Business Powered by Integrity & Purpose.

Melojane’s story begins an ocean away, on an island in the Philippines. A brilliant young woman with a degree in Medical Technology, she dreamt of becoming a doctor. But financial hardship made that dream seem impossible. Aged 18, armed with courage and naive optimism, MJ set off for the United Kingdom.

“I thought everyone in the UK was a prince or a princess,” she recalls wistfully. “I asked my mother to pack me a ball gown, just in case I was invited to a party.”

The party invitation never came. Instead, she arrived in Derbyshire to work in care homes. She had a three-year plan to save money for medical school while supporting her sister’s education back home.

But life had something different in store...

That three-year plan turned into a lifetime of dedication. Instead of returning home, MJ chose to qualify as a nurse, earning her degree from the University of Southampton. She immersed herself in every facet of healthcare—from the NHS to private practice, from general nursing to mental health.

Her work ethic, forged by watching her parents—a renowned gardener and a florist— became her superpower. “In nursing you help without question” she says. “It taught me that integrity isn’t just a word; it’s the bedrock of everything you do.”

Life, however, is not always kind. Two years ago, MJ found herself in a painful place, betrayed in business by people she trusted. It was a shattering time that would break many, but for MJ, it was a crucible. “I stood on my principles,” she explains. “I knew success wasn’t just about making money. It’s about building something with heart.”

From those ashes, powered by integrity and an unshakeable belief in her purpose, Vitaluxe Health and Aesthetics was born.

For MJ, success is measured in the community she has created. It’s seen in the 174 (and growing!) 5-star Google reviews where clients don’t just talk about results—they rave about being seen, heard, and cared for by a team led by a woman with a “heart of gold”.

It’s quantified in the annual donations to the UK’s Alzheimer’s Society and charities empowering underprivileged children in the Philippines. “This is true fulfilment,” says MJ. “This is the tsunami of love and joy you get back when you are authentic in helping others.”

This authenticity was on full display at Vitaluxe’s recent 2nd-anniversary celebration, an event packed with over 100 attendees including the Mayor of Fareham.

MJ is passionate about one treatment in particular; Lymphatic Drainage Massage. Having witnessed its profound effects firsthand, MJ became a dedicated expert. She discovered why this treatment is a cornerstone of wellness in Brazilian culture, and she is now collaborating with the renowned Renata Franca from Brazil to become an international mentor herself.

The gentle, rhythmic massage technique is not just a luxury, it’s a vital health treatment that aims to:

• Boost your immune system by flushing out toxins.

• Dramatically reduce swelling and fluid retention.

• Speed up recovery from surgery.

• Offer profound relief for fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and digestive issues.

• Improve overall skin health.

/Vitaluxe Health & Aesthetics

/vitaluxe_health

It’s a perfect example of MJ’s core belief: prevention is everything. Investing in your body’s innate systems is the most powerful medicine of all.

MJ is inspired by ‘The Dash Poem’ by Linda Ellis which refers to the dash between the dates we are born and the date we die.

“For it matters not, how much we own, the cars... the house...the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.”Linda Ellis

Your health is your story. How will you live it? Will you wait for illness, or will you choose prevention? Will you simply exist, or will you thrive?

MJ’s journey, her ‘dash’, is a powerful reminder that our greatest setbacks can lead to our most meaningful callings. She stands as a beacon of hope, a caring and loving human whose journey from the Philippines to Fareham has immeasurably enriched our community.

Explore Vitaluxe’s range of treatments designed for holistic wellness—from their signature Lymphatic Drainage Massage and professionally curated skincare, to innovative aesthetic therapies.

BRAND IS THE ROOTS, MARKETING IS THE LEAVES

Picture a tree in winter. The leaves have fallen, the branches look bare — but the roots are still there, holding strong, feeding life below the surface.

That’s how we see the relationship between brand and marketing.

Marketing is the foliage: the brochures, the campaigns, the ads, the social posts. It’s the visible stuff — pretty, eye-catching, and ever-changing with the seasons. But without a solid trunk and strong roots — without brand — those leaves won’t last long.

Your brand is the foundation. It’s the story, the values, the “why” at the heart of your business. It’s what gives the leaves their colour, their energy, their life. And just like with trees, no two sets of roots are the same. Yours might be bold and brave, or quiet and thoughtful, but whatever they are, they need to be strong.

Here’s where many businesses trip up: they pour energy into marketing (the ‘pretty’ leaves) without first tending to their brand (the roots). It looks good for a while — bright, leafy, flourishing — but when the winds change, the cracks show.

At Koala Marketing, we like to think of ourselves as business gardeners. We help small and medium-sized businesses nurture their roots so the leaves grow strong, season after season. That might be a rebrand that reflects who you’ve become or where you are going, a website that feels like home, or campaigns and content that spark genuine connection.

Because here’s the truth: strong brands weather every season. They adapt, they evolve, they keep growing. And when your roots are deep and healthy, your marketing doesn’t just look good — it thrives. That’s why we’re here for both — the roots and the leaves. Brand first, then marketing, so your whole business can flourish season after season.

Koala Marketing is a small-but-mighty creative studio based in Southampton. We help passionate brands stand out with branding, websites, content creation and photography that feels better than good. Curious? koalamarketing.co.uk

Slow Down This Autumn – Reclaim Your Calm

The days are getting shorter, life feels busier than ever, and maybe you’re feeling a bit stretched. Burnout doesn’t just appear overnight – it sneaks up on you with irritability, tiredness, restless nights, or that sinking thought: “I just can’t keep going like this.” Many of us carry that weight quietly, until suddenly it’s too much.

Pause Before Burnout Takes Hold

There’s a saying: “You should sit in nature for 20 minutes a day… Unless you’re busy, then you should sit for an hour.”

Even tiny pauses can make a big difference. I often tell my clients that we can’t stress and sense at the same time. So, step outside for a mindful walk and notice the autumn colours, the sounds, the smells. Take five slow deep breaths, or just enjoy that cup of tea while it’s still hot.

Feeling overwhelmed? Shrink your list to one or two essentials. Ask yourself, “What’s the smallest next step?” Sometimes it’s just sending one email, drinking a glass of water, or putting your shoes on

Lynsey Berwick Counselling

In-person,

for a quick walk. A short reset like this, stepping outside, switching off your phone, gives your mind a breather. Doing these small things consistently helps you feel calmer, clearer, and more able to keep going without burning out.

Expert Support When You Need It

Sometimes a quick pause isn’t enough, and that’s where a bit of personalised support makes a difference. My counselling practice on a farm near Wickham isn’t just a place to talk, it’s a space to step away from daily pressures. Nestled in Hampshire countryside, indoors or on a woodland walk surrounded by nature, the environment helps you reflect, reconnect, and restore.

Autumn reminds us that letting go is natural. You don’t have to do everything alone. Taking an hour for yourself, or reaching out for support, isn’t just about coping, it’s about feeling more in control, restoring your energy, and reconnecting with a calmer, more grounded version of you.

If the idea of mushrooms as the centrepiece of a roast dinner sounds odd, you’re not entirely wrong. But Shroom isn’t about tradition. It’s about reinvention. Lucy and Antonia handcraft the heroes on your plate, choosing fresh, whole food ingredients over anything ultra-processed. Their Shroom Wellingtons are prepped fresh the day before, combining nutrient-rich mushrooms with a hearty lentil filling, all wrapped in golden, flaky puff pastry.

For those with an ear to the ground, quite literally, you’ll have heard that mushrooms are the talk of the town. And with good reason. The adaptogenic benefits of these spore-some (sorry) fungi is still being realised but with mushroom powders aplenty we can enjoy the super powers they offer us. Which is exactly why the Shroom ‘Beef-style Meat’ alternative packs a fung-tastic punch - a meat-like fibrous structure, with a satisfying bite (for that all important ‘mouth-feel’), combined with the functional benefits of mushrooms.

Shroom on Sunday:

The Roast Reinvented

Back in the summer of 2024, local food entrepreneurs Lucy and Antonia launched Shroom, the UK’s first fungiforward, fast-food pop-up.

Fast forward twelve months, and the duo have spawned something new, Shroom on Sunday, Portsmouth’s only 100% vegan Sunday roast.

As more people choose to reduce or ditch meat altogether, Shroom on Sunday answers the growing SOS - where can you get a proper vegan roast that doesn’t feel like a sad side dish? Lucy and Antonia knew the struggle and they’ve created a plant-based Sunday experience worth leaving the house for.

Because great vegan cooking isn’t just about skipping the animal products. It’s about flavour. When meat comes off the plate, the other ingredients get a chance to shine and with the right approach, they do exactly that. Sadly, many places don’t give the vegan option much love. Cue the usual scenario - boiled veg, a frozen nut roast, or some beige tart no one really wanted. Shroom on Sunday changes the game. This isn’t an after-thought, it’s a new way to roast. Whether you’re fully plant-based or just looking for a kinder, lighter alternative, Shroom’s Sunday roast is here to make sure no one misses out on this beloved British ritual. And on rituals, you won’t want to miss the December pop-up which comes served with a large portion of Christmas extravagance. Wait, is that sleigh bells in the distance…..

Recipe

Nadia’s Indian and Pakistani cookery book was originally created in the 1980s by her mother and father (Riaz and Khalida Arab) when they travelled to the UK. They taught a successful Indian cookery school to locals in Portsmouth where they shared their passion for food and flavours. After the cookery school closed the precious book was lost. 30 years later it was found by Nadia through a work colleague and recreated with videos. ‘The Road from Karachi’ is now run as a CIC and Nadia and her mother have brought these recipes back to life, and into the community, through cookery lessons.

The book is priced at £19.87 as this was the year Riaz and Khalida Arab published their first book.

A percentage of the proceeds go to supplying clean water to India, Africa, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

Authentic Chicken Curry

Recipe supplied by Nadia Arab, The Road from Karachi.

Ingredients:

Sunflower oil

1.5 chicken breasts, cubed

2 medium onions sliced

1 inch of fresh ginger, grated

6 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced

Half a tin of tomatoes

Small bunch of fresh coriander, chopped

1tsp of each: cumin powder, cumin seed, chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, turmeric powder, pink salt

Method:

In a shallow frying pan heat two tbsp sunflower oil and toast the cumin seeds.

Add the onions and fry gently. When the onions are a medium brown in colour add two tbsp of water.

Add the ginger, garlic and 1 tbsp oil to the onions and stir for five minutes.

Add two tbsp of water.

Add all the spices and salt (add the quantity of chilli powder and salt to your taste).

Add the chopped tomatoes.

Add the chicken cubes to the sauce.

Cook on a medium heat for 10 minutes then simmer for another 10-15mins until the chicken is tender.

Add half the fresh coriander.

To serve, garnish your curry with fresh coriander. Serve with chappatis or boiled rice.

THREADING PASSION:

HOW ONE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMME IS WEAVING CREATIVITY INTO THE FABRIC OF THE COMMUNITY.

In a world often driven by fast fashion and fleeting trends, one grassroots initiative is taking a stitch-by-stitch approach to reconnecting people—young and old—with the timeless art of textiles. More than just after-school enrichment, Sew Tribal’s vibrant and evolving program is a hub for creative expression, hands-on learning, and community building.

At the heart of the project lies a colourful blend of textile and fashion after-school clubs, stylish Stitch & Sip gatherings, creative parties, and personalised 1:1 sewing lessons. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an aspiring textile designer, these offerings provide the perfect setting to learn the fundamentals or refine advanced techniques in a supportive environment.

The after-school clubs have quickly become a favourite among students, merging fun with skill-building. Children learn not only how to sew, but how to conceptualise and create—from sketching ideas to stitching their own pieces. This isn’t just about making something to take home; it’s about crafting confidence and independence, one stitch at a time.

Meanwhile, adults are finding their own space to unwind and reconnect through Stitch & Sip events—a social fusion of creativity and relaxation. With a glass in one hand and a needle in the other, participants stitch through laughter, inspiration, and the joy of making something tangible in an increasingly digital world.

Private lessons, both for hand sewing and machine work, are tailored to the learner’s pace, needs, and ambitions. Whether you’re looking to sew on badges, master a sewing machine or learn how to screen print, there’s expert guidance at every turn.

Newly-launched themed sewing parties are perfect for birthdays, team-building, or just celebrating creativity. These immersive experiences turn fabric and thread into unforgettable memories.

In a time when sustainability, creativity, and mindfulness are more important than ever, this initiative is more than a series of classes— it’s a movement. One that’s reviving lost skills, celebrating personal style, and nurturing a new generation of makers.

Hi Sahar! Can you tell us about what you do?

I’m a traditional and western degree-trained Acupuncture Practitioner with a BSc (Hons) in Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture. I also have qualifications in Aromatherapy and Beauty Therapy Sciences. I founded AcuCare Clinic in Southsea, where I specialise in women’s hormonal health, emotional balance, and skin. My approach is bespoke - creating healing prescriptions that merge acupuncture, aromatherapy, and natural skincare to help women feel balanced, confident, and well.

What’s your background and what led you into this career?

I began my professional life as a paramedic before retraining in beauty therapy and later completing my acupuncture degree. With over 20 years of experience - from Harley Street to local community clinics - I’ve combined clinical science with holistic medicine. My Persian heritage, together with my passion for Traditional Chinese Medicine, inspired me to create signature methods such as AromaAcu Therapy™ and Emotional Skin Therapy™, blending ancient wisdom with modern science.

What are the symptoms your treatments help with?

I support women with hormonal symptoms such as hot flushes, mood swings, brain fog, fatigue, insomnia, and skin changes. Cosmetic acupuncture also helps stimulate circulation and collagen for natural radiance. My treatments are always tailored, whether the focus is hormone balance, skin health, or emotional resilience.

Congratulations on the launch of your new book

The Pocket Guide to PeriMenopause! Why did you choose to write a book on this subject?

Perimenopause affects around 13 million women in the UK - and I’m one of them. Too many feel confused, unheard, or dismissed. I want women to know this is a natural transition and that help is available. I wrote the book I wish my loved ones had - a witty, practical self-care companion that women can truly trust.

What can people expect from the book?

The Pocket Guide to PeriMenopause is one of the first interactive books in women’s health. It blends science, acupressure, aromatherapy, healing rituals, affirmations, and Persian wisdom - all delivered in a warm, relatable voice. With QR-coded videos and simple “two minutes a day keeps the peri away” rituals, it’s like having meyour acupuncturist and self-care coach - right in your pocket. Look out for #PocketPeri on social media and join the movement.
