To our dear friends of Florida Rep... Welcome back! As the lights come up on our 24th Season, we look forward to a bright future as we celebrate the magic of live theatre! We are extremely grateful to you, our loyal patrons and donors, who have stood by us during the turbulent times of the past year and a half. We thank our senior staff, board of directors, ensemble of artists and volunteers for their continuing hard work, never-ending optimism, and devotion. Because of our loyal supporters, we will emerge strong and ready to entertain, enrich, and delight Southwest Florida audiences. The absence of theatre has taught us how important and how vital the performing arts are to this community. Like many theatre companies across the country, we have produced virtual offerings: readings, filmed productions, discussions, our 2021 Gala, and even classes while our indoor stages were darkened. We uncovered new avenues of creativity and innovation by engaging audiences with exciting performances, under the stars, on the banks of the Caloosahatchee. But we realize that nothing can replace the electric experience of live theatre together in the Historic Arcade and ArtStage Studio Theatres. It’s been a long road since we closed our doors to the public in March 2020, but we are ready to lift the curtain and light the lights once again. Our 24th season is a new and vibrant celebration of theatre and of the people who give of themselves to make it happen. We are pleased to offer you stories about hope, human connection, and renewal. Our signature policy of presenting a variety of drama and fantasy remains, but this year we have carefully planned a season of plays and musicals that lift us up and offer an escape. We open with Let’s Fall in Love, a new cabaret-style show that transports us back in time with nostalgic music that defined a generation. We continue this fall with a spine-tingling ghost story—but The Woman in Black isn’t just a haunting tale, it’s a love-letter to actors and stagecraft that will keep you on the edge of your seat. West Side Story is a modern American musical masterpiece, combining the brightest stars of our Conservatory Program with professional artists and Ensemble Members to tell Tony and Maria’s story of star-crossed love in a fresh new staging. OUR 24th SEASON

We begin the new year with two uplifting stories about love, new beginnings, and friendship: a brand-new comedy Morning After Grace shows us it’s never too late to fall in love, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Driving Miss Daisy chronicles an unlikely decades-long friendship. Another new comedy, Into the Breeches, is a patriotic story of sisterhood and coming together in a crisis— when the men are away fighting World War II, the ladies of the local theatre troupe band together to prove “the show must go on!” The most exciting addition to the new season is a reimagined remounting of the theatre’s 2020 production of A Doll’s House, Part 2. We were a day away from opening when the pandemic closed our doors—and while many of you saw it virtually, this fresh new staging brings the razor-sharp sequel to Ibsen’s 1879 masterpiece to life in the ArtStage, where you’ll be in the middle of the action. We close our season with two pieces that offer a musical escape and a hopeful love story. Buddy is a rock ‘n’ roll sensation where audiences witness Buddy Holly’s meteoric rise to stardom and hear all his greatest hits along the way. Maytag Virgin is a brand-new romantic comedy and an old-fashioned romance that has the perfect message of hope, redemption, and renewal to close a season designed to celebrate human connection. Our over a year-long intermission has proved that theatre makers are industrious and that theatre lovers are devoted. It also taught us that true theatre isn’t on a small screen. When people come together to watch a live play, their heartbeats synchronize. A painting in a museum never changes, the actors in a film give the same performance at every viewing, and the words in a book always read in the same order, but a play is alive! No two performances are the same and our work is never finished until you experience it with us. We are so glad you’re back where we all belong. As always, we hope you enjoy the show as much as we enjoy performing it for you.

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Welcome Back! Welcome Back! Florida Rep’s Board of Directors welcomes you to our 24th season at Florida Repertory Theatre. To simply say that this past year was a tremendous challenge to the theatre would be a huge understatement. We survived this past year thanks to our loyal supporters, patrons, donors, and through the efforts of our excellent leadership team led by Greg Longenhagen and John Martin. The Pandemic forced us to shut down indoor productions, lay off staff and cut hours. However, with ingenuity, flexibility, and strong support we did manage to produce outdoor performances with our wonderful interns and our Education team. On stage, under the stars, next to the river…truly magical! Season 24 brings a reboot of last year’s cancelled productions with some small changes. The Pandemic is still with us, but we will adhere to strict safety protocols in order to keep our staff, actors, and patrons safe. It is great to be back in business. In addition to our work on stage as a regional theatre company, Florida Rep has an active and vital Education and Outreach arm that reaches more than 45,000 children and young adults annually - and that number continues to grow. It is comprised of the Theatre for Young Audiences and Lunchbox Theatre, Camp Florida Rep, and the popular, audition-only Conservatory Program, classes for youth and adults, and more. I encourage all of you to attend one of these wonderful productions where you will see the stars of tomorrow. Florida Rep’s Board of Directors is responsible for the financial health of the theatre, and we work hard all year to raise the funds to keep these vital community programs going. We also strive to keep your ticket prices as reasonable as possible, all the while bringing you the highest quality theatre in Southwest Florida. Each year we continue to validate the Wall Street Journal’s acclaimed drama critic and award-winning author, Terry Teachout, when he reported that Florida Repertory Theatre is “One of America’s Top Repertory Companies!” Your donations as Patrons support more than one third of our budget and are critical to our success. A LETTER FROM YOUR MAYOR Dear Florida Repertory Theatre Patrons, Good theater brings entertainment to its audience. Great community theater brings young and old together for a common goal: to put on an outstanding performance that promotes creativity and stirs our emotions, moving us to laughter and tears. For more than two decades, the City of Palms has been blessed with award-winning regional theater being acted out in the historic Arcade Theatre in beautiful downtown Fort Myers. Florida Rep is undoubtedly one of Southwest Florida’s most important cultural and educational institutions. Both Gulfshore Life Magazine and Florida Weekly have on numerous occasions named the Rep “Best Performing Arts Group,” and the theatre has been featured in the New York Times and covered in American Theatre Magazine. It was encouraging to watch Florida Rep pivot to a virtual and outdoor season in 2020-2021. I am thrilled that in-person professional theater will be returning to the River District. Thank you to Artistic Director Greg Longenhagen, Executive Director John Martin, and their dedicated staff and actors for keeping theater alive in Southwest Florida. CAREY CRIM is an East Coast-based playwright and resident artist at the Purple Rose Theatre Company. Her play Never Not Once was the winner of the 2017 Jane Chambers award and a finalist for the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference. It opened to critical acclaim at The Purple Rose Theater and went on to Theatre Aquarius in Ontario, The Rubicon Theatre in Los Angeles and then on to The Park Theatre in London. Conviction premiered at Bay Street Theatre starring Sarah Paulson, Garret Dillahunt and Elizabeth Reaser. It then opened at The Rubicon in a coproduction where it was nominated for an Ovation award for best new play. Her earlier works, Growing Pretty, Wake and Some Couples May…all received world premieres at The Purple Rose Theatre Company. Wake received a West Coast Premiere at the SeaGlass Theatre in Los Angeles where it was a critic’s pick. Carey adapted it for the screen and the feature film, starring Jo Koy, James Denton and Myndy Crist, has won numerous festival awards and was released October 8th. It is currently available on Amazon Prime. Her play Morning After Grace ran to sold out houses at The Purple Rose Theatre Company starring Randolph (Randy) Mantooth. It went on to Asolo Repertory Theatre, The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Shakespeare and Company, The Barter Theatre, Indiana Repertory Theatre and is slated for many more. Paint Night will open at The Purple Rose in April and The Last Broadcast was recently seen in Urbanite Theatre’s Modern Works Festival in Sarasota, Florida. She is a three-time finalist for Miami City Theater’s short play competition and won the competition in 2011. She has been a finalist for The Heideman award and a three- time finalist in the Samuel French OOB festival. Carey is a graduate of Northwestern University.

WHO’S WHO MARVIN BELL* (Ollie Ford) is excited to be making his Florida Rep. debut in Morning After Grace. Originally from St. Louis, Mo., Marvin Bell began his entertainment career in 1982 as a standup comedian. He performed his comedy for some thirty-five years in forty-eight states, Caribbean Islands, at colleges, on cruise ships, in comedy clubs, and at the resort hotels of the Catskills and Pocono mountains. After moving to New York City in 1994, Marvin Bell began to turn his focus toward acting, landing roles in short videos and a few student films. In 2012, after landing a role in a small production of Paul Rudnick’s Regrets Only, Marvin’s passion for the stage became overwhelming so he began to assert the bulk of his efforts in that direction. His next endeavor was a regional theater production of Alfred Uhry’s Driving Miss Daisy which earned him a Broadway World nomination for best featured actor in a play. He has since reprised the role three times. In addition, Marvin Bell has appeared in four August Wilson productions, most recently as Elder Joseph Barlow in Radio Golf at Gulfshore Playhouse. He was Holloway in Two Trains Running at Triad Stage just before COVID shut down the world. In addition to his stage work, Marvin Bell has been seen on the small screen in episodes of Law and Order; SVU for NBC and Daredevil on Netflix. KATRINA FERGUSON* (Abigail) is pleased to return to Florida Rep. having appeared as Mrs. Banks in Barefoot in the Park. Originally from Australia, Katrina has performed OffBroadway; and at regional theatres across the U.S. and Europe. She recently played Anne Hathaway in the critically acclaimed solo show, Shakespeare’s Will, at Oldcastle Theatre. Other favorite roles/plays include Maria Callas/Master

WHO’S WHO CHRIS CLAVELLI**† (Director) is an ensemble member and the resident director of The Florida Repertory Theatre where he has directed and acted in over 40 productions. In addition, he is The Artistic Director of The Chrysalis Stage. At Florida Rep, he has directed House of Blue Leaves, The Glass Menagerie, Collected Stories, Time Stands Still, Tribes, Lend Me a Tenor, Dolls House Part 2 and The Cocktail Hour. Other directing credits: The Riverside Theatre, Two River Theatre Company, The Publick Theatre, The Virginia Stage Company, The Depot Theatre, The Chenango River Theatre, The University of South Carolina, Fairleigh Dickinson University and The Actors Studio. He served as Adjunct Professor of classical acting in the master’s program at Pace University/Actors Studio Drama School for five years, Adjunct Professor of British styles at CAP 21/Molloy College, Assistant Professor, acting, Florida Gulf Coast University and instructor of voice and speech and on camera technique at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Since then he has had a varied career in the arts working as an actor, juggler, stage manager and set/lighting/sound designer at almost all of the theatres in SW Florida. Some of his favorite shows include Pippin in Pippin, Wiley Post/Trick Roper in Will Rogers Follies and set designer for Noises Off at Big Arts on Sanibel Island. Most recently, as a director, he directed James Baldwin’s Blues for Mister Charlie (the first professional production in New York City of that play since its Broadway production in 1964), and August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom for the New Haarlem Arts Theatre (NHAT), where he is the Founding Artistic Director. For the Philadelphia Festival Theatre, he directed the world premiere of Art Becker’s Bare Knuckle. He is an advocate for new plays and has directed numerous readings of original scripts in New York City. Dr. Nesmith’s diverse career consist of being a Professor of Theatre at the City College of New York; Founding Artistic Director of the New Haarlem Arts Theatre (NHAT); freelance theatre director and actor. His areas of expertise are Acting, Directing, African American Dramatic

Literature, and Performance Studies. As a scholar Dr. Nesmith has published numerous essays in anthologies, and he has published articles in such publications as Yale Drama, and American Theatre Magazine. Dr. Nesmith has served as a judge for the Off-Broadway Obie Awards, and an NEA art granting judge as well. Dr. Nesmith holds a Ph.D. from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in Performance Studies and an MFA in Acting from the University of California at San Diego. PAULETTE OLIVA (u/s Abigail) recently transplanted from New York to Paradise (Naples!), and was last seen locally in Naples Players’ production of Calendar Girls.
