To our dear friends of Florida Rep... Welcome back! As the lights come up on our 24th Season, we look forward to a bright future as we celebrate the magic of live theatre! We are extremely grateful to you, our loyal patrons and donors, who have stood by us during the turbulent times of the past year and a half. We thank our senior staff, board of directors, ensemble of artists and volunteers for their continuing hard work, never-ending optimism, and devotion. Because of our loyal supporters, we will emerge strong and ready to entertain, enrich, and delight Southwest Florida audiences. The absence of theatre has taught us how important and how vital the performing arts are to this community. Like many theatre companies across the country, we have produced virtual offerings: readings, filmed productions, discussions, our 2021 Gala, and even classes while our indoor stages were darkened. We uncovered new avenues of creativity and innovation by engaging audiences with exciting performances, under the stars, on the banks of the Caloosahatchee. But we realize that nothing can replace the electric experience of live theatre together in the Historic Arcade and ArtStage Studio Theatres. It’s been a long road since we closed our doors to the public in March 2020, but we are ready to lift the curtain and light the lights once again. Our 24th season is a new and vibrant celebration of theatre and of the people who give of themselves to make it happen. We are pleased to offer you stories about hope, human connection, and renewal. Our signature policy of presenting a variety of drama and fantasy remains, but this year we have carefully planned a season of plays and musicals that lift us up and offer an escape. We open with Let’s Fall in Love, a new cabaret-style show that transports us back in time with nostalgic music that defined a generation. We continue this fall with a spine-tingling ghost story—but The Woman in Black isn’t just a haunting tale, it’s a love-letter to actors and stagecraft that will keep you on the edge of your seat. West Side Story is a modern American musical masterpiece, combining the brightest stars of our Conservatory Program with professional artists and Ensemble Members to tell Tony and Maria’s story of star-crossed love in a fresh new staging. OUR 24th SEASON

We begin the new year with two uplifting stories about love, new beginnings, and friendship: a brand-new comedy Morning After Grace shows us it’s never too late to fall in love, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Driving Miss Daisy chronicles an unlikely decades-long friendship. Another new comedy, Into the Breeches, is a patriotic story of sisterhood and coming together in a crisis— when the men are away fighting World War II, the ladies of the local theatre troupe band together to prove “the show must go on!” The most exciting addition to the new season is a reimagined remounting of the theatre’s 2020 production of A Doll’s House, Part 2. We were a day away from opening when the pandemic closed our doors—and while many of you saw it virtually, this fresh new staging brings the razor-sharp sequel to Ibsen’s 1879 masterpiece to life in the ArtStage, where you’ll be in the middle of the action. We close our season with two pieces that offer a musical escape and a hopeful love story. Buddy is a rock ‘n’ roll sensation where audiences witness Buddy Holly’s meteoric rise to stardom and hear all his greatest hits along the way. Maytag Virgin is a brand-new romantic comedy and an old-fashioned romance that has the perfect message of hope, redemption, and renewal to close a season designed to celebrate human connection. Our over a year-long intermission has proved that theatre makers are industrious and that theatre lovers are devoted. It also taught us that true theatre isn’t on a small screen. When people come together to watch a live play, their heartbeats synchronize. A painting in a museum never changes, the actors in a film give the same performance at every viewing, and the words in a book always read in the same order, but a play is alive! No two performances are the same and our work is never finished until you experience it with us. We are so glad you’re back where we all belong. As always, we hope you enjoy the show as much as we enjoy performing it for you.

A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

Welcome Back! On behalf of the Board of Directors, our dedicated staff, the volunteer corps, and Florida Rep’s Ensemble of Artists, I am honored to welcome you to our 24th Season. 2020 and 2021 were difficult years for everyone but we have persevered thanks to you, our valued patrons, supporters, and donors. Since taking over as the Chairperson this fall, Florida Rep’s first season after a year-long hiatus has taken us on a thrilling journey – and there is so much more to come as we celebrate the return of Live Professional Theatre to Southwest Florida. Making theatre is hard work that takes many hands in the best of times, but in the months after our industry-wide intermission, the job of making professional theatre of the quality our audiences are accustomed to requires even more planning, craftsmanship, and resources. That is why we are grateful to you for buying a ticket or donating this season. Without your generosity we would not be here today. While professional theatre was dark on our indoor stages, Florida Rep and its leadership pivoted to creating virtual content and performances, and even created an outdoor stage where audiences could gather under the stars. In addition, our Education Department, under the direction of Kody C Jones, continued to find ways to engage our area’s young people with online classes, a virtual camp, and even outdoor Conservatory productions – and an in-person Summer Arts Intensive in 2021. Even amid the pandemic, the Board and I are proud that Florida Rep’s education programs continued to reach tens of thousands of Lee County students. We were deeply moved to see our Conservatory students onstage with a cast of seasoned professionals in West Side Story this past fall, we wish our Junior Theatre Festival students luck in Atlanta this winter, and we’re so proud of all the young people who participate in all our programs each season. Exposing students to the arts will help our community for generations to come. Under the leadership of our Artistic Director, Greg Longenhagen, and Executive Director, John Martin, Florida Rep weathered “Hurricane COVID” with grace and determination to emerge as strong as ever. The 24th Season is full of plays and musicals that celebrate the artform and lift us all up in difficult times. Classics, romances, stories of sisterhood, and showstopping musicals – who could ask for a better line-up after the lights were dark for so long? Florida Rep has something for everyone in 2022. A LETTER FROM YOUR MAYOR Dear Florida Repertory Theatre Patrons, Good theater brings entertainment to its audience. Great community theater brings young and old together for a common goal: to put on an outstanding performance that promotes creativity and stirs our emotions, moving us to laughter and tears. For more than two decades, the City of Palms has been blessed with award-winning regional theater being acted out in the historic Arcade Theatre in beautiful downtown Fort Myers. Florida Rep is undoubtedly one of Southwest Florida’s most important cultural and educational institutions. Both Gulfshore Life Magazine and Florida Weekly have on numerous occasions named the Rep “Best Performing Arts Group,” and the theatre has been featured in the New York Times and covered in American Theatre Magazine. It was encouraging to watch Florida Rep pivot to a virtual and outdoor season in 2020-2021. I am thrilled that in-person professional theater will be returning to the River District. Thank you to Artistic Director Greg Longenhagen, Executive Director John Martin, and their dedicated staff and actors for keeping theater alive in Southwest Florida. ALFRED UHRY is the only playwright ever to win the Triple Crown: an Oscar, a Tony, and a Pulitzer Prize. He began his career as a lyric writer under contract to the late Frank Loesser. In that capacity he made his Broadway debut in 1968 with Here’s Where I Belong. He then wrote the book and lyrics for The Robber Bridegroom and was nominated for a Tony Award. He followed that with five re-created musicals at the Goodspeed Opera House. In 1987 his first play, Driving Miss Daisy, opened at Playwrights Horizons Theatre in New York. It was subsequently moved to the John Houseman Theatre, where it ran for over 1300 performances. The play earned many awards, including the Outer Critics Circle Award and the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. For the film version, he won an Academy Award and the film itself was voted Best Picture of the Year. Other films include Mystic Pizza and Rich in Love. Mr. Uhry’s second play, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, which was commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, opened on Broadway in February 1997. It has been chosen Best Play by the American Theatre Critics Association, The Outer Critics Circle, and the Drama League, and the 1997 Tony Award. He worked on Parade, a musical play about the Leo Frank case, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown and directed by Harold Prince. His film projects include a new adaptation of Dodsworth for Time Warner, Cut Flowers for Miramax, and Taft, commissioned by Morgan Freeman.

Other characters of August Wilson he has played: Becker in Jitney at The American Stage, FL; Hedley in Seven Guitars at The Artist Rep, in Portland, OR; Bynum in Joe Turner’s Come And Gone at The American Stage Co; Memphis Lee in Two Trains Running at Theater Works in Palo Alto, CA; Doaker in The Piano Lesson at The Portland Playhouse in Portland, OR, Caesar Wilkes in Gem Of The Ocean at The Cygnet Theater in San Diego, CA; Doub in Jitney at The Portland Playhouse in Portland, OR; and Canewell in Seven Guitars at The Lorraine Hansberry Theater in San Francisco, CA. JASON PARRISH*† (Boolie Werthan) is in his 16th season with Florida Rep as an Ensemble Member and the company’s Associate Artistic Director. As an actor, his over 30 appearances with Florida Rep include Cabaret, How the Other Half Loves, Over the River and Through the Woods, The Dingdong, Twelve Angry Men, Around the World in 80 Days, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Clybourne Park, Greetings!, Miracle on South Division Street, Noises Off, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, 2014’s nationally-acclaimed production of Arsenic and Old Lace, and six years in David Sedaris’ one-manshow, The Santaland Diaries. His directing credits with Florida Rep include Let’s Fall in Love, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Alabaster (NNPN Rolling World Premiere), Million Dollar Quartet, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, A Christmas Story, and The Fantasticks as well as a number of productions for Florida Rep’s Theatre for Young Audiences Series. Jason’s work with other theatres as an actor and director includes Actors’ Playhouse (Miami), Riverside Theatre (Vero Beach), Theatre by the Sea & Ocean State Theatre Company (Rhode Island), and guest appearances with the New York Philharmonic’s Young People’s Concert Series at Lincoln Center. MAUREEN HEFFERNAN**† (Director) is delighted to be returning to Florida Repertory Theatre where, as a member of the Ensemble of Artists, she has directed over 15 productions including Dancing at Lughnasa, Sylvia and The Little Foxes, all of which received praise from The Wall Street Journal among other critics. Over the past 30 years, Maureen has directed more than 90 professional theatrical productions nationally. Most recently she directed Tiny Beautiful Things at University of South Carolina where fellow Ensemble member Jim Hunter, Jr. is chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. Besides Florida

WHO’S WHO Rep, some of her favorite theaters include New York’s John Houseman Theater and Ensemble Studio Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, PlayMakers Repertory Company, and Pennsylvania Stage Company. Maureen also served as Artistic Director for George Street Playhouse in New Jersey, and as Acting Artistic Director at Delaware Theater Company. Maureen has been recognized as a leader in arts education throughout the country and as an innovator in arts programming for special populations. She was the founding Artistic Director of the Unlimited Potential Theater Company of Very Special Arts in New Jersey. She also inaugurated the Drama Therapy Program for the Center for Cognitive Rehabilitation at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Maureen is a member of the faculty of the School of Arts and Communication at The College of New Jersey where she teaches Integrated Visual and Performing Arts. Maureen is a proud member of both Actors Equity Association and Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. RACHEL BERKHOUSE (Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to continue her work on the 24th season here at Florida Rep with Driving Miss Daisy. Previous credits at Florida Rep include serving as PSM of Let’s Fall in Love earlier this fall and working as a Stage Management intern during the 2019-2020 season. As an intern, Rachel was an Assistant Stage Manager on Always...Patsy Cline, Barefoot in the Park, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, and A Doll’s House, Part 2. Outside of Florida, Rachel’s prior credits include serving as the Production Stage Manager at University of Dallas, where she earned her BA in Drama, and working at Fort Worth’s Trinity Shakespeare Festival as Assistant Stage Manager on Richard III, Measure for Measure and Twelfth Night. Rachel is looking forward to being a part of the rest of the season here at the Rep! RICHARD CROWELL† (Scenic Designer) has been designing scenery and lighting for the stage in various parts of the country for over 40 years. He is delighted to be a long-time member of Florida Rep’s “Ensemble of Theatre Artists,” having

designed in the Arcade since the inaugural season. Alabaster, Becky’s New Car, Split in Three, Arsenic and Old Lace, Tally’s Folly, Red, The Rainmaker, and The Last Romance are among many of his designs that have been produced at Florida Rep. Richard received his MFA from the stage design training program at the Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University, and his BFA in theater from Memphis State University. AMY L. MASSARI*† (Stage Manager), ensemble member and AEA Stage Manager, is pleased to be returning for her 12th season as resident stage manager at Florida Repertory Theatre. A proud member of Actor’s Equity Association for the past 32 years, Amy has had the privilege to work in some of the county’s finest regional theaters including the Alley Theatre (Houston, TX), the Dallas Theatre Center (Dallas, TX), Stage West (Springfield, MA), and the Pioneer Memorial Theatre (Salt Lake City, UT) to name a few. Amy feels wonderful to be back with her Florida Repertory Theatre family following the long Covid-19 intermission. She asks everyone to please be safe and keep up those defenses. Amy would like to thank her loving family for all their support. She is happily married to her husband Michael of 25 years, he is a theatre professional and professor at Marymount Manhattan University in NYC. Michael and Amy could not be prouder of their two children; Jesse Cheyenne, a sophomore at Marymount Manhattan studying acting and directing, and Caleb Dakota who attends Buena Vista University in Iowa on a full wrestling scholarship and is studying Sports Business. KRISTINA TOLLEFSON*** (Costume Designer) is a member of United Scenic Artists (the professional designer’s union), is a Professor and Resident Costume and Makeup Designer at the University of Central Florida in Orlando where she also serves as Undergraduate Coordinator for her department. She holds an MFA from Purdue University in Costume Design and Technology and a BA Degree from South Dakota State University in Theatre and English. In addition to her

WHO’S WHO work at UCF, Kristina’s costume designs have appeared in places such as The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (Washington DC), Prague Shakespeare (Czech Republic), Shakespeare and Company (MA), St. Lawrence University (NY), DeSales University (PA), Maples Repertory Theatre (MO), Orlando Shakes (FL), Orlando Rep (FL), Purdue University (IN), Phoenix Theatre Indianapolis (IN), as well as at theatres in Texas, South Dakota, Kansas, and Florida including her work on Florida Rep’s Always…Patsy Cline. ​ Kristina is the recipient of three Kennedy Center/ American College Theatre Festival Design awards and numerous teaching awards. Her book, Too Much Is Not Enough: The History in Harriett’s Closet, with co-author Jodi Ozimek, documents the expansive clothing collection of Harriett Lake. ADAM TRUMMEL (Sound Designer) is thrilled to join the team at Florida Rep! He began his career in the arts as a precocious five-year old, dancing with Tampa Ballet. Since then he has had a varied career in the arts working as an actor, juggler, stage

manager and set/lighting/sound designer at almost all of the theatres in SW Florida. Some of his favorite shows include Pippin in Pippin, Wiley Post/Trick Roper in Will Rogers Follies and set designer for Noises Off at Big Arts on Sanibel Island. When not doing theatre, Adam enjoys brewing his own beer and spending time with his wife, Keara, his pups Dancer and Meadowlark, and his cat Cocoa Puff. TODD O. This is his first acting credit with the theatre, although past credits include sound engineer for Let’s Fall in Love and Always... Patsy Cline, and A2 for West Side Story. He also works as the Assistant Master Electrician for the theatre. Jackson attended college at University of Dallas in Irving, Texas where he studied Drama. In Texas, he worked as a scenic intern with the Trinity Shakespeare Festival, and performed on stage with Uvalde Opera House and Luckenbooth Theatre. Jackson is so excited to be a part of the 24th season here at Florida Rep! TRICIA HENNESSY u/s Daisy) is thrilled to be working on her first production with Florida Repertory Theater. Most recently seen as Inga in Mel Brooke’s Young Frankenstein at New Phoenix Theatre, Tricia has been an avid performer for nearly 30 years. Some of her favorite roles include Velma VonTussel in Hairspray; Drowsy in The Drowsy Chaperone; Gladys Hotchkiss in The Pajama Game; and Angel in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Off stage, Tricia is the owner of Empower Dance & Athletic Wear, Cape Coral’s premier dance and athletic wear boutique and a dedicated dance mom. She is grateful to her wonderful husband and daughter for encouraging her to continue her passion for performance and promoting the arts.

EUGENE NESMITH* (u/s Hoke) has performed in various productions in New York and Regional Theatres across the country, such as The Chairs adapted from Eugéne Ionesco by Theodora Skipitares at LaMama, Oyamo’s Let Me Live at the Harold Clurman Theatre, Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus (NADA), Julius Caesar for Shakespeare and Company, and David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross for the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, just to name a few. Most recently, as a director, he directed James Baldwin’s Blues for Mister Charlie (the first professional production in New York City of that play since its Broadway production in 1964), and August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom for the New Haarlem Arts Theatre (NHAT), where he is the Founding Artistic Director. For the Philadelphia Festival Theatre, he directed the world premiere of Art Becker’s Bare Knuckle. He is an advocate for new plays and has directed numerous readings of original scripts in New York City. Dr. Nesmith’s diverse career consist of being a Professor of Theatre at the City College of New York; Founding Artistic Director of the New Haarlem Arts Theatre (NHAT); freelance theatre director and actor. His areas of expertise are Acting, Directing, African American Dramatic Literature, and Performance Studies. As a scholar Dr. Nesmith has published numerous essays in anthologies, and he has published articles in such publications as Yale Drama, and American Theatre Magazine. Dr. Nesmith has served as a judge for the OffBroadway Obie Awards, and an NEA art granting judge as well. Dr. Nesmith holds a Ph.D. from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in Performance Studies and an MFA in Acting from the University of California at San Diego.
