WESTLAKE GROUP PLANS 25TH ANNIVERSARY REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY ON FRIDAY, SEPT. 11 BY FIONA SLUSAREV
The 9/11 Remembrance First Responder Group, a Westlake-based club organization, will hold a special memorial on Friday, Sept. 11 to recognize the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The group, founded and run by Westlake resident Bobby Farber, is working to honor the victims and first responders of the attacks as a proud supporter of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Farber has pledged that 100 percent of the donations made to his fundraising page will go directly to Tunnel to Towers. Farber’s connection to 9/11 is firsthand. He was an electrician working on the corner of West Street and Liberty Street, across from the Twin Towers, when the first plane collided. He heard the crash first, and then saw the flames engulfing the building, not yet realizing what had caused it. “We heard a sonic boom, and we were underneath it. I looked up, and all I
saw was a big, giant orange ball and everything blowing out,” Farber recalled. “That vision of seeing that ball, that ball of flame, and feeling the heat — it almost looked like when everything was coming down [that] it was slow motion. Very surreal, but it wasn’t. It was in real time.” Farber managed to get to the other side of the bridge that ran across West Street, before he saw the second plane crash and was trapped witnessing the destruction. When first responders from the NYPD and FDNY rushed in, Farber was able to make it back to his shop. He returned as a part of rebuilding and recovery efforts to get power back in the area three days after the attack. “I got hugged from everyone who knew where I was, and they looked at me, and they said, ‘You would never have survived it… I always look at it that I survived to tell the story — the classic story of ‘never forget,’” Farber said.

Farber created the 9/11 Remembrance First Responder Group about a year-and-a-half ago. Directly experiencing the events of Sept. 11, 2001, as well as having colleagues and friends who were affected by the attacks, has made Farber a passionate champion for 9/11 remembrance and honoring first responders. The memorial ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11 will start at 6:30 p.m. and be held at the Lodge at the Westlake Adventure Park. The event will be outside on the turf with representatives from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue expected to be in attendance. Other community organizations are anticipated to support the event, including Girl Scout Troop 24570 and the Western Pines Middle School Chorus. The scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, while Western Pines students will sing the national anthem. First responders and community officials will also have an opportunity to speak. Attendees will also have the opportunity to support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, through Farber’s fundraising page and linked QR code.

Tunnel to Towers is a nonprofit organization, founded in memory of a volunteer firefighter who lost his life saving others during 9/11. The group honors and supports first responders and wounded service personnel. They have a number of programs that aid in 9/11 education, scholarships and housing accessibility. “I have chosen to give 100 percent of all donations that come through that QR code,” Farber said. This year, the remembrance ceremony will only be open to Westlake residents. However, Farber anticipates holding the 9/11 Remembrance First Responder Group’s event annually and expanding it to welcome the surrounding communities in the coming years.

Vibrant colors and striking expressions. Larger-than-life animal portraits seem to leap off the page. You might recognize the work of this talented Westlake artist with autism from his social media pages with more than one million followers. At just 17 years old, Viktor Bevanda is already a world-renowned artist with his work displayed at the United Nations headquarters in New York City and an Emmy Award win under his belt. Viktor, who is largely nonspeaking, began drawing at the same time he was diagnosed with autism at age five. His biggest supporters are his parents, Andrea and Boris Bevanda, who recognized Viktor’s talent early on when he started drawing cartoons with crayons. Originally from Serbia, the family moved to Florida eight years ago and decided to start sharing Viktor’s story and art on social media in 2020. “He started to draw at a very young age when he could hold a pen. In Serbia, all our walls were covered in his drawings,” Andrea explained. The walls of their Westlake home are no different. Each one is adorned with Viktor’s creations, from expressive animal portraits to radiant floral pieces. Each drawing seems to blend a sense of whimsy and colorful creativity that is uniquely Viktor’s own. With his signature technique of layering oil pastels to achieve an almost three-dimensional feel, Viktor creates pieces that seem to be illuminated with life. Before his artwork caught the atten-
tion of people around the world on Instagram and Facebook, Andrea and Boris realized Viktor’s ability had surpassed cartoons after he made a perfect copy of Picasso’s “Man with a Violin” for a school assignment. Since then, he has kept his ability to create photo-realistic images and infused it with his own style and approach to color. “He has his unique style now: the animals with big eyes. When he starts to draw, first, he always does the eyes,” Andrea said of her son’s “bold and vivid” creations. Viktor is entirely self-taught and draws continuously without erasing. He multitasks while he draws by watching videos and creates artwork almost every day. He gravitates toward the bright colors offered with oil pastels, but he has recently started experimenting with watercolors. Inspired by animals, his current muse is the zebra. Viktor’s expressive style has become instantly recognizable, garnering attention across platforms. His evocative drawings resonate with many. His original pieces, prints, cloth-
ing and mugs are reaching fans around the globe. The response on social media has been completely positive and supportive. His parents say they have never gotten a single hate comment. They receive messages daily, with commenters consistently reaching out not only in appreciation for Viktor’s art but also in gratitude for his story. “It’s positive emotions,” Boris reflected. “When they see Viktor’s pictures they start to smile.” Parents and family members of individuals with autism, as well as individuals with autism, have found com-

fort and inspiration in Viktor’s journey. Like many parents, Andrea and Boris were worried about what Viktor’s life would look like when they originally received his diagnosis. They didn’t know what type of future he would have, but they realized he could accomplish great things with the right support. “When you realize that you have a kid with autism, you panic. In reality, it’s not like that,” Boris said. For families of individuals who recently received an autism diagnosis, the Bevandas can be a trusted resource. Andrea and Boris said that Viktor led the way, and all they had to do was support him. They are happy that sharing Viktor’s art and journey can help dispel the fears surrounding life with autism. “We have lots of people contact us. It’s a big support for them because we know [how they feel]. People can see these kids having a great future. They can have a life with great opportunities,” Boris explained. “Parents don’t need to be afraid,” Andrea added. The exhibit will run from Sept. 4 to Oct. 5, with a reception on Friday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. He plans on holding two or three exhibitions in the upcoming year. When Viktor isn’t creating vibrant works of art in his home studio, he enjoys spending quiet time by the sea or frequenting the waterslide near the pool in Westlake. He loves to play basketball, ride his bicycle and travel on planes. The City of Westlake will hold its third annual 5K walk/run on Saturday, Sept. 12, starting at 7:30 a.m. at the green space located just north of the corner of Persimmon Blvd. and Ilex Way. New this year, the race has been moved from the winter months to the weekend of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Families from across the area, runners, walkers, supporters and local businesses alike will be turning out for a day of fitness and reflection. The run promises to unite participants and those who cheer them on in support of the non-
profit Tunnel to Towers Foundation. This year’s race will remember the 9/11 attacks, with a portion of the proceeds assisting Tunnel to Towers in its mission to honor the memories of those lost on 9/11 and support first responders and wounded veterans. As in previous years, a portion of the funds will also benefit Westlake-area schools. “Twenty-five years is an important milestone because there is now an entire generation that has no personal memory of Sept. 11,” Westlake Mayor JohnPaul O’Connor explained. “We want to honor the nearly 3,000 people
who were lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, the families whose lives changed forever, and the men and women who served our country in the years that followed. For me, the goal is to make sure that ‘never forget’ remains more than a slogan.” In addition to supporting Tunnel to Towers, there will be a special remembrance ceremony honoring victims, family members and first responders of 9/11. Attendees will have the opportunity to reflect on those lost in the attacks and appreciate the bravery of those who were the first to offer aid.

A PBSO motorcycle detail will be leading the runners through the community. Participants will each receive a personalized race bib with an RFID timing chip for precise results, an official shirt and a finisher’s medal to commemorate the event. Additional awards will be given to the top three overall finishers and across various age groups. “Participants can expect the same energy that makes the Westlake 5K fun — families, neighbors, some friendly competition and a great community atmosphere — but this year the event will carry a deeper meaning,” O’Connor said. Local businesses will be showing their support for the cause with sponsorships and booths. Trader Joe’s will be there with water and bananas, while Carmela Coffee will be selling caffeinated beverages for those who need a pick-me-up at the early hour, and 3Natives will offer juice options to refuel. Sponsors Lytal, Reiter, Smith, Ivey & Fronrath; Junior’s Barbershop and Co.; Superior Surfaces; Orangetheory Fitness; Xfinity; and Coastal Mobile Restrooms are coming together to make the day possible. This year’s 5K is also during Westlake’s 10th year as a municipality. Over the past 10 years, the community has grown exponentially in infrastructure,

population and community feel. “The morning really becomes a combination of remembrance and community pride — honoring where our country has been while celebrating what we are building together here at home,” O’Connor said. Approximately 300 to 400 people are expected to show their support for the race and honor the memory of 9/11. Registration for the race is open, costing $45 through Sept. 11 and $55 on the day of the event. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 7 a.m. to enjoy the pre-race activities.
“Sept. 11 reminds us of tremendous loss, but it also reminds us of courage, service and unity. Twenty-five years after Sept. 11, 2001, and 10 years into Westlake’s story, I hope people leave with one simple message: We remember where we came from, we’re proud of what we’re building and we continue to show up for one another,” O’Connor said. The completely redone salon is luxurious, yet approachable, creating a comfortable backdrop for all your hair service needs. Owner Rachel Johnson, a native of
the western communities, was a hair stylist in Wellington for more than 20 years before she purchased what would become Totally You Studio in October 2020. Her roots run deep in the area, with her children and grandchildren, as well as her mother before them, all calling the western communities home. “I wanted to be part of my community,” Johnson said of her decision to work at and later take over the salon. Even if they lose money on a potential service, Johnson would rather prioritize the integrity of her client’s hair. She won’t do it unless it will come out right. If a client arrives with damaged hair, Johnson can help bring their hair back to good condition in order to do the desired service later. “It’s not worth being rich if I can’t sleep at night or look at myself in the mirror,” Johnson explained. “Sometimes clients don’t like to hear ‘no,’ but it’s bet18 September/October 2026 | WESTLAKE THE MAGAZINE
ter than what would happen if we attempted it.” This philosophy stems from the same reason Johnson originally decided to work with hair at the young age of 15 after bad experiences with stylists who were not trying to help her hair. She wants people to enjoy their hair and understand how to maintain it. “You have to design the hair for the person — for how they’re going to live with it,” Johnson said. She explained that if someone doesn’t want to put a great deal of effort into maintaining a hairstyle, then a stylist shouldn’t give them a cut that requires that effort to get the desired look. She helps clients find cuts and styles that not only complement their lifestyles but also make them feel confident. Johnson and her team’s passion for hair extends beyond the salon. They are happy to educate patrons on how to best care for their hair. A perennial problem in some parts of the western communities is damage caused by well water hardness. To combat this, the salon frequently recommends installing shower filters. “You want to use the right products, the right tools, for your hair,” Johnson said. “We teach you how to take care of your hair.” The master stylists at Totally You
Studio keep up with the latest techniques and trends. The ladies go to hair shows and brush up with classes. Even with decades of experience across the team, the stylists still stay committed to bringing clients the best and latest looks. “I think no matter how long you’ve been in the industry, and how educated you think you are, there’s always something you can get from everything — and from each other,” Johnson noted. For her, the best part of running a salon is the clients. She loves to work with different people and the varied personalities and stories they bring. When Westlake first welcomed residents, it promised more than new homes. It promised a lifestyle. The developer has announced plans for the Westlake Fieldhouse, a new sixacre recreational hub that will introduce another amenity for residents to gather, relax and connect. Slated to break ground next year with an anticipated completion in 2028, the Westlake Fieldhouse has been designed with a different purpose in mind: everyday living. Space for Everyday Moments — At the heart of the Westlake Fieldhouse will be a 3,900-square-foot multipurpose building designed as a versatile retreat from the Florida sun.

Even Westlake’s four-legged residents are getting an upgrade. The community’s dog park will relocate from the Adventure Park to the Fieldhouse, featuring expanded shade structures, seating and closer proximity to parking. Thoughtfully redesigned, this area is aimed at making the daily walk a more comfortable social hour for both pets and their owners. A Lifestyle-First Philosophy — The Westlake Fieldhouse is the latest investment in a community already known for offering one of South Florida’s most comprehensive amenity packages.
