RPBHS STUDENTS BUILD DOZENS OF HURRICANE KITS FOR FOSTER FAMILIES
Student volunteers from Royal Palm Beach High School and Dr. Joaquín García High School gathered on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at RPBHS to assemble dozens of hurricane preparedness kits for local foster families in honor of the 9/11 National Day of Service. The “HurriCANe You Be Ready” initiative was led by Students Speak Up for Kids in partnership with Youth Service America. More than 100 young people contributed by collecting items through community drives and assembling bags packed with essentials like flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, toiletries and nonperishable snacks. Because foster parents often take in children on short notice with limited resources, these kits provide critical support ahead of peak hurricane season.

Splashing water and fun play are the basis of teaching children how to learn a lifesaving skill at Goldfish Swim School in Royal Palm Beach. Florida is surrounded by water, but with the school’s unique curriculum, children can learn how to swim and develop the experience needed to be safe in the water. Goldfish Swim School’s state-ofthe-art aquatic swimming facility is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for young children to jump into the pool and learn as much as they 8 September/October 2026 | ROYAL PALM THE MAGAZINE
can. With flexible lesson times, shiverfree pools, convenient access to swim gear and specially trained staff, the school has everything for a child to learn how to swim. The school’s play-based approach is its foundation for building confidence and knowledge in water. The curriculum is designed for children from four months through 12 years old with different skill sets. “Children learn through play, so having that play-based curriculum really helps them,” General Manager Ellie Werne said. “Incorporat-
ing that science of swim play into the lessons really encourages the kiddos to keep coming back and to progress throughout the curriculum by learning through our play-based methods.” With Florida home to oceans and lakes and many pools, knowing how to swim is critical for area children. Goldfish Swim School prioritizes practice and skill development in the water to give children the tools they need throughout the year, whenever they encounter water. For the staff, swimming is not just a

fun activity; it is a lifesaving skill. But learning such a critical skill does not have to be boring. They use games, songs and other activities to make children as comfortable and engaged as possible while teaching them how to swim. Through these teaching methods, they encourage children to improve and learn more. “Goldfish Swim School is so much more than learning how to swim,” Werne said. “We’re helping children build confidence, independence and an important life skill while creating an expe-
rience that they can really enjoy.” Staff measures students’ progress by looking at both swimming ability and safety skills. Parents of infants and toddlers can even get involved by joining their children in the water to help as they progress. Once a child gets to a certain point, they can move up a level and learn other techniques and skills to improve their ability to swim. Goldfish Swim School’s highest class level is its Swim Force, which is designed to prepare children to become future competitive swimmers by building endur-
ance and learning competitive strokes. Werne explained that being able to watch children progress and learn how to better move in the water is one of the best parts of her job. She added that not every job allows you to teach someone a lifesaving skill. “We want children to be able to develop confidence and independence in water,” she said. “Seeing a child go from being nervous or hesitant to becoming confident and excited to swim is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.” ROYAL PALM THE MAGAZINE | September/October 2026 9
Goldfish Swim School’s founders opened the company’s first location in Birmingham, Michigan, in 2006. They recognized the importance of teaching children critical water safety skills, but also saw a lack of high-quality, continuous swimming instruction tailored to young children. Within just two years, they were able to grow to teach more than 2,000 students per week. Goldfish Swim School’s play-based teaching approach has become so successful that it has expanded throughout the country, now with more than 200 locations across North America. Werne said that the Royal Palm Beach area has high demand for welltaught, year-round swim education for children. In 2024, Goldfish Swim School opened a franchise in the community. “I’m really incredibly proud of our team and the relationships we’ve built with families since opening in Royal Palm Beach,” Werne said. “We’re excited to continue growing alongside the community and being a place where families know their children are sup-

ported, encouraged and celebrated.” So far, more than over 2,000 children have gone through their educational programs. The company is also expected to open more locations in other parts of the state in the future. “The response from the Royal Palm Beach community has been incredibly positive,” Werne said. “We’ve had families that tell us how much their child looks forward to coming to lessons and how much they’ve seen a change in their child’s confidence in the water.” Other than swim lessons, Goldfish Swim School focuses on community involvement. Company representatives participate in local events and provide water-safety presentations. They also host events at the school to build relationships with families and children, like their upcoming trunk-ortreat event on Oct. 16. Werne emphasized that learning to swim can be a lifetime skill if properly and consistently trained. Starting early can make it easier, but they welcome any child who is interested in learning. Swimming is not just a summer activity
or sport, but an opportunity for fun and safety. “If anybody is interested in getting their swimmer signed up, they can always give us a call, they can go onto our web site and they can even send us an Instagram message,” Werne said. “I think it’s just super important, even if they want to come to one of our events and check us out or come in for a tour. Those are all open opportunities for parents to really get an idea of what we do.” Goldfish Swim School is open on Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Multiple programs and pricing options are available for families and children. Steel beams and fresh concrete are creating a new foundation for the future of healthcare at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital. Just months into his tenure as the new CEO, Cory Mead is overseeing multimillion-dollar projects to expand the hospital and its services. HCA Florida Palms West Hospital, located on Southern Blvd. just west of Royal Palm Beach, is expanding with $130 million in approved projects underway. Mead is leading the hospital through one of the largest investments in its 40-year history. These projects
will expand capacity and modernize facilities to meet the increasing demand for healthcare in the community. “People come to us on the worst days in their life, and people come to us on some of the happiest days in their life… We’ve established ourselves in the community for the last four decades, and we’re building and preparing for the next 40 years as well,” Mead said. “I want the community to know that they can trust us.” Mead has worked in operations for parent company HCA Healthcare for
13 years. His experience spans across multiple hospitals in different states. He began his career at HCA in Kansas City, Missouri, and he later took his first chief operating officer role in Nashville, Tennessee. While moving up the corporate ladder, he eventually moved to South Florida to be closer to his wife’s family and became the CEO of HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital in Tamarac in Broward County. While there, he oversaw more than $60 million in capital projects that expanded its services. ROYAL PALM THE MAGAZINE | September/October 2026 13

In March, Mead joined HCA Florida Palms West Hospital as the new CEO. He said the move was a natural fit because he already lives in Palm Beach County, and he wanted to transition to overseeing a larger hospital with considerable growth potential. Mead believes that his experience working at smaller hospitals and different medical settings has prepared him for success at one of the largest healthcare providers in the state. “I’ve always felt very fortunate to serve in these roles and be a part of a hospital’s legacy because all of these organizations will be here much longer than all of us probably will,” he said. As the CEO, Mead is pursuing a strategy to build a strong team of staff, physicians, and administrators who can help continue improving the quality of service to residents and enhance the hospital’s operations. “My priority is executing on that construction agenda, but then also… the culture and people agenda,” Mead explained. “If you can’t put high-performing teams and physicians in those care spaces to take care of patients, it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day.” The hospital serves much of the central and western parts of the county with its 94-acre campus and 207-bed acute care facility. Its 24/7 emergency room and specialized medical care units give patients comprehensive, personalized medical services that meet their needs. The new capital projects under construction will expand the hospital’s 14 September/October 2026 | ROYAL PALM THE MAGAZINE
ability to keep providing these essential services to the community. “We’ve got a lot of investment going back into the hospital and in the community,” Mead said. The projects include a new 42-bed inpatient building expansion, a 10-bed expansion of the adult emergency department, a new cardiac catheterization lab and biplane imaging equipment for stroke treatment, renovations to the women’s and children’s units, and a new freestanding emergency room on Okeechobee Blvd. Mead said his team expects many of these projects to be completed next year. HCA Florida Palms West Hospital’s push toward expanding capacity and modernizing its facilities represents a broader initiative to keep pace with growing demand. Since the hospital opened in 1986, Palm Beach County has experienced rapid population growth, especially here in the western communities. Mead said that for the hospital to maintain its position as one of the premier health care providers in the area, it has to adapt and expand to meet demand. “All of those things are being done in an effort to keep up… with the population growth that we’re seeing, the demographic change and shift that we’re seeing here in Palm Beach County,” he explained. “I think it’s really important for the hospital to stay in step with the population growth and the needs of the community.” During those 40 years, HCA Florida
Palms West Hospital has established itself as one of the most valued healthcare providers in the area. More than 900 employees and 790 physicians treat thousands of patients every year. “I’ve generally received good feedback in regard to our projects here, because it means we’re adding jobs, we’re adding physical investment into the community, and we’re adding services that our families and kids can access when they need us the most,” Mead said. The hospital is one of several facilities that make up HCA Florida Healthcare’s network. With more than 650 healthcare locations and 11,000 physicians, it is the largest collection of hospitals in the state. Mead believes that access is one of the most important services a hospital can provide. Through the new infrastructure projects, residents can receive emergency treatment and specialized medical care quickly. “Over time, you have to change and adapt. That means looking at your current services and your current bricks and mortar in order to see how we can enhance those care settings in those environments of care, but also add new ones,” Mead said. Mead added that he hopes residents will continue to view the hospital as a trusted partner when they need it the most. His team is looking to further invest in the hospital’s future to preserve its service to the community that has relied on it for the past four decades. “The investment now will have ripple effects for decades and really set us up for success in order to continue to take care of everybody who chooses to live in the western Palm Beach County area,” Mead said. AN EDUCATION AT THE NRI INSTITUTE CHANGES LIVES BY FIONA SLUSAREV
The NRI Institute of Health Sciences is dedicated to creating educated and prepared health professionals devoted to caring for their community. Since 2015, the school has been providing nursing and sonography students an exemplary education with top-notch academic and career support. The school has campuses in Royal Palm Beach and Wellington. Daniel Splain, NRI’s chief administration officer, has a lifetime of experience working in healthcare administration and insurance. His wife, Elizabeth Stolkowski, the president and director of the nursing education program, has
had an impressively varied and lengthy career in nursing, as well as healthcare administration. Through NRI, they aim to give back to the healthcare community they have long been a part of and to bring more young people into the profession. The United States is in the midst of a nurse shortage, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Nursing and sonography careers alike have become stable and high-paying choices. The degrees, clinical experience, support and guidance given at NRI set up healthcare students to succeed in their careers.
“Once they have that nursing license, with the constant shortage of nurses that we have in this country today, they are set for life. They will always have a job if they want it,” Splain explained. NRI offers an associate’s degree of applied science in diagnostic medical sonography and an associate’s degree of science in nursing, with a new cardiac sonography diploma now offered. The institute is licensed by the Commission for Independent Education, approved by the Florida Board of Nursing, and accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. Graduates of the sonography program are eligible for jobs in hospitals, doctor’s offices, radiology centers and independent diagnostic imaging centers. Nursing graduates are prepared for and qualified to apply for the NCLEX-RN Exam to become registered nurses. Both programs take between 18 to 24 months to complete. There are two nursing tracks: the concept-based program of study and the advanced placement licensed practical nurse track. The former teaches concepts on a critical thinking basis and focuses on students’ ability to diagnose, readying graduates for realworld situations. The advanced placement track is for students who have already passed the NCLEX-PN and are licensed practical nurses. Students get access to an academic library, designated study areas and laboratory facilities. The dedicated instructors take extra time to hold tutoring sessions, one-on-one career counseling and placement services. An extensive amount of time is devoted to preparing nursing students to sit for the NCLEX exam and is built into the curriculum. “One of our specialties is preparing students for the NCLEX exam,” Splain said. Students come to the NRI Institute for its flexible and unique approach to education. They are able to structure classes around their schedules either during the day or at night and on the weekends. Students who work or have family obligations can tailor their education to their lives. “Our student base is largely nontraditional,” Splain explained. “It’s not people, for the most part, coming immediately from high school to higher education. Many have been out in the workforce. Many have families. And 18 September/October 2026 | ROYAL PALM THE MAGAZINE
many of our students are first-time higher education graduates in their family.” Academics are further personalized because the program is intentionally kept small. Class sizes are small, with an average of 10 to 20 students per instructor. With class sizes like this, students can foster close relationships with instructors, and learning is individualized. Splain noted that for some students, English is a second language. Teachers understand this challenge and work with students to help them achieve their goals. According to Splain, what sets NRI apart from other institutions is “the level of personalized care that we give to each student. We assess what their needs are.” With this approach to education, it’s not hard to understand why among NRI students, there is a 100 percent employment rate for sonography graduates and an impressive 83 percent passing rate for the NCLEX exam — higher than the average passing rate for colleges in Florida. Additionally, education is made affordable through scholarships. Since
the school is an accredited institute, students can apply for Title IV Federal Financial Aid Funding. NRI also accepts Florida Bright Futures Grants, Florida Student Assistance Grants, veteran benefits and other independent scholarships. According to Splain, the biggest accomplishment that the NRI Institute has achieved is giving students a lifechanging education that they can then use to change the lives of so many others. The majority of graduates stay and work in Palm Beach County, providing a vital service for residents and helping people when they need it most. “We say the world is their oyster, and this education gives them a chance to crack open that shell,” Splain said. authentic, homemade Italian dishes. Annenberg’s family opened the first Domenic’s & Vinnie’s Pizza restaurant in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1949. For more than seven decades, they have been perfecting their recipes with fresh, scratch-made techniques for mouthwatering Italian comfort food. The family has opened three restaurants in the Northeast and has now taken that dedication for quality offerings to the western communities. “Growing up in the restaurant industry, I developed a passion for hospitality and creating memorable experiences for guests,” Annenberg said. “We
wanted to bring our family’s recipes, traditions and Connecticut-style pizza to South Florida while building a place where families and friends can gather.” The restaurant is best known for its Connecticut-style pizza, which is a thincrust oblong pie with a charred, chewy crust. The Hot Lips Pizza, topped with soppressata and hot honey, along with the sausage and classic cup-and-char pepperoni pizzas, have already become popular items to order. Outside of pizza, the chefs at Domenic’s & Vinnie’s serve a wide selection of gourmet dishes, including Italian classics like freshly made pasta and chicken parmesan. To get more familiar with the area and build relationships with the community, they have been getting involved in local events and partnerships. “We loved the area’s down-to-earth character and saw an opportunity to bring something unique that wasn’t already available while becoming part of the community ourselves,” he said. Residents have welcomed Domenic’s & Vinnie’s with open arms. Annenberg said that he is grateful for the positive feedback, and customers often compliment their entrées and generous portions. The owners are hoping to continue to build these relationships with every customer. For now, the owners will be focusing on establishing their brand here in the western communities. As they continue to grow, they are not ruling out opening more locations in Florida. Regardless, they are going to carry on the nearly century-long family legacy of preparing and serving fresh, scratch-made food.
