The Sandhill Crane Golf Club, led by general manager Casey Mitchell, provides two golfing destinations in one: the Champion Course and the Nest Par 3 Course. Sandhill Crane’s course is an 18-hole, par-72 design that was renovated by Dusenberry Golf Course Design in 2013. The course expands through distinctively Floridian vegetation: southern pines, palm trees and wetlands. With Celebration Bermudagrass fairways and TifEagle greens, play feels luxurious throughout the course. Head Golf Professional Jordan Liddy joined Sandhill Crane in 2022 and was elected to PGA membership the following year. According to Liddy, the club is unique because it is able to combine an exceptional golfing experience with public accessibility. The course offers changes in elevation to challenge seasoned players and plays to 6,500 yards. An array of lessons and programs are available for all levels of players — beginners to experts — as well as an aqua driving range. Most training is done through the Nest, except for private lessons, camps and the Little Tykes classes, which are held at the Sandhill Crane’s training center. “We offer instruction for golfers of all ages and abilities, including private lessons, junior programs, group instruction and player-development programs,” Liddy said. “Our goal is to make learning the game enjoyable while helping everyone improve.” There are many events, clinics and tournaments held throughout the year, including the Charity Shootout and the Mayor’s Veterans Golf Classic in November, which is the largest. When players aren’t hitting the ball on the green, they can dine at the Dancing Crane restaurant in the clubhouse or stop in the pro shop for rentals, as well as traditional golf clothes and equipment. “Sandhill Crane stands out because it combines quality golf with a beautiful natural setting and a strong connection to the local community,” Liddy said. The Nest Par 3, while a part of Sand12 September/October 2026 | AVENIR THE MAGAZINE
hill Crane, maintains its own clubhouse and golf options. Created in 2023 by Nicklaus Design, the 19-hole course, 30,000-square-foot putting green and two-story driving range provide many ways to experience the game of golf. The course itself spans 3,100 yards from the back tees, culminating with an island green. The shorter format allows a quick game of golf to fit into everyday life — and also serves as an excellent introduction to golf for new players. Head Golf Professional Michael Armit has been with Sandhill Crane since 2018. He saw the Nest being constructed from the ground up before his appointment as head golf pro at its opening. Armit noted that the Nest focuses more on being a true community hub that brings non-golfers, new players and experienced golfers together. The course has four tees to choose from, depending on your level, and the driving range, equipped with the latest Trackman technology, has 18 covered bays and 20 uncovered bays for golfers to hone their skills. “We have various golf outlets here for every skill level, which can make the approach to the game less intimidating,” Armit said. “The design was carefully executed to be challenging from any tee box, while also having distinct differences from one hole to the next.” Trackman technology is especially
helpful for junior golfers and novice players to get an understanding of the game. The Junior Drop-In program on Saturdays, the After School Clinic on Wednesdays and Get Golf Ready for adults are all held in the Nest. The back of the driving range has three holes and a large area to accommodate practicing different kinds of shots to simulate oncourse golfing. “We’re trying to create an atmosphere at the Nest that is really inviting, not intimidating. We’re there and available to teach whenever possible,” Armit said. Outside golfing, the Nest also features Casey’s Café, which serves upscale bar food and also provides catering for events. The club has multipurpose rooms, a conference room and two bars. The pro shop offers rentals, as well as forward-thinking, modern apparel and accessories, both golf-related and not. “We really are trying to create an environment where you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the Nest and the amenities,” Armit explained. He suggested that Palm Beach Gardens residents look into the annual pass for $25, which allows for advanced booking seven days ahead of time and 15 percent discounts off prime, midday and 9-hole rates. ANNETTE WHITEHEAD BRINGS YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL TENNIS EXPERIENCE TO AVENIR STORY AND PHOTOS BY FIONA SLUSAREV
Annette Whitehead, a veteran professional tennis player once ranked 200 in the world and the No. 1 player in New Zealand in 1975, has now brought her years of experience winning and coaching to the courts at Avenir. Stepping onto the courts at the Pearl at Regency or the Blue Heron clubhouse, you might just get to see a glimpse of this powerhouse in action. Tennis is one of the most popular sports across the world, and South Florida offers one of the best climates for year-round play. It’s not hard to understand why tennis players flock to Avenir for the selection of recreational tennis
groups, state-of-the-art courts and the off-court amenities, too. Whitehead is one of these residents, calling the eastern neighborhoods home. Although no one else in her family played tennis, Whitehead found her calling in the sport at a young age. She started playing tennis at 11, and by the time she was 15, she was ranked No. 1 in New Zealand, where she had lived since age 10. “A girl down the road just gave me a tennis racket one day, and I started hitting [tennis balls] against the garage door. Then the rest is history,” Whitehead recalled.
At 15, she moved to Australia alone to pursue tennis while she lived with a family and worked the nightshift at a factory. At the peak of her competitive career, Whitehead was ranked 200 in the world for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and had wins over top 50 players. She played many tournaments when she was on tour, including the Virginia Slims Circuit (which later paved the way for the formation of the WTA) and Grand Slams (the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open). Whitehead noted her favorite memory of her competitive career was playing the Grand Slams. AVENIR THE MAGAZINE | September/October 2026 15
Whitehead retired at 28 from professional competition to raise a family with her husband, Mark Whitehead, who she had met through tennis at age 16 while they trained under the same coach. Mark was also a professional player, and their eldest daughter later followed in their footsteps to become a tennis pro at 16. Whitehead later became a WTA coach and traveled with tour players for five years. She is also a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) coach and has trained athletes around the world for more than 45 years. Whitehead owned and ran five tennis clubs, including Hope Island Tennis Club in Australia. She additionally hosted the Fed Cup (now the Billie Jean King Cup) and the Australian Women’s Hardcourt Championships, a WTA Tier IV event. Before moving to Avenir and teaching at the Pearl and the Blue Heron, she lived and coached at Miromar Lakes for almost three years. While she still plays tennis with Mark a couple of times a week to keep her skills up and try new techniques, coaching is now her passion. “This, to me, is not a job — for me, it’s a passion,” Whitehead said. “I never once wake up and say, ‘I don’t want to go to work.’ I think coaching is a gift. There are players out there who have been very good players, but they can’t teach, or they don’t have the patience for it. For me, it’s fun.” Her favorite part of coaching is being able to watch her students improve. Whitehead’s goal is to combine a patient approach with measurable results. She prioritizes building a solid foundation of the fundamentals of tennis and emphasizes the psychological components of the sport. Then she lets each student find their own style.

“Tennis is a game of mental skills,” Whitehead explained. “10 percent is basically your gift — how you play — and it’s 90 percent mental.” Additionally, Whitehead is directly on the court with her students. She doesn’t coach from the sidelines. She explains while she feeds balls to her students so that they are truly utilizing their lesson time to the fullest extent and improving. In between her critiques, she demonstrates so students can get a visual understanding of techniques. “If these girls aren’t improving, then I’m not doing my job. It’s a progression,” Whitehead said. Whitehead holds individual and group lessons, usually an hour in length. She has taught all ages from children to retirees. Her new students in Avenir have been thrilled with her instruction style. They agree that Whitehead always provides individualized attention and goes beyond simply teaching drills to instruct on strategy and truly wants each student to succeed.
Lori Scappini, a tennis player for the last eight years, is one of those students. “What makes Annie such a remarkable tennis professional is that she goes far beyond teaching technique,” Scappini said. “She teaches me how to play the game — understanding strategy, making smarter decisions on the court and learning how to use my skills effectively during a match.” Avenir resident Sherry Varone agreed. “Annette has a rare gift for coaching. Regardless of the clinic format, or the range of player abilities, she consistently identifies the specific adjustments that each player needs to make and reinforces those techniques throughout the entire session,” Varone said. “Her level of engagement is remarkable. I don’t know many coaches who devote that much individual attention to every player, every minute, of every clinic.” Tina Brack enjoys Whitehead’s supportive coaching style. “She’s very professional, and she’s paying attention to everybody on the court. She gives a lot of feedback. She also comes off as very approachable — very supportive — so she would be really good for beginners,” Brack said. On Saturday, Nov. 7, Palm Beach Gardens will do exactly that when the 20th annual Mayor’s Veterans Golf Classic returns to the Sandhill Crane Golf Club, bringing together golfers, community leaders, businesses and supporters for a day dedicated to honoring those who have served the nation. Presented by the City of Palm Beach Gardens and Lohman Law Group P.A., the milestone event represents two decades of gratitude in action — and offers an opportunity for philanthropic-minded community members to make an impact while enjoying one of the area’s most engaging traditions.
The Mayor’s Veterans Golf Classic combines the pleasures of a premier golf outing with a mission that reaches far beyond the fairways. According to Sandhill Crane General Manager Casey Mitchell, the tournament reflects the community’s unwavering gratitude and commitment to local veterans. “My father was a boom operator on a KC135 in the Air Force, my nana served in the Navy, my grandfather was a Marine, and my papa was in the Army,” Mitchell said. “Being able to give back to those who have selflessly served and sacrificed for our freedoms is an honor, especially in their time of need. The funds we raise each year go to homeless and at-risk veterans, offering access to emergency, transitional or permanent housing assistance; health-
care; education and career development; counseling; and many other support services.” All proceeds directly benefit the West Palm Beach VA Resource Center, an organization providing critical inpatient and outpatient care to homeless veterans and individuals at risk of homelessness. This makes the event’s impact both immediate and deeply personal. For Palm Beach Gardens residents accustomed to supporting meaningful civic and charitable initiatives, the appeal of the Mayor’s Veterans Golf Classic lies in its ability to make philanthropy feel both personal and enjoyable. Reaching two decades is no small achievement for a community fundraiser, and the tournament’s longevity speaks to the enduring commitment of the city, Sandhill Crane, and the many businesses and individuals who have supported it. The 2026 event invites that tradition to continue, with sponsorship opportunities designed to accommodate everyone from prominent corporate partners to smaller local businesses and individual supporters. With the Lohman Law Group as the Presenting Sponsor, there are still opportunities for companies seeking meaningful visibility. The $5,000 Colonel Sponsor provides additional exposure, including a sponsor banner, on-course hole sponsor signage, four tournament registrations, two foursome registrations for the sponsor event, recognition at key tournament functions and a TrackMan experience for up to 50 guests. Additional sponsorship levels make participation accessible while maintaining the event’s emphasis on community connection. Major Sponsors at $3,000 receive tournament and promotional benefits, while Captain Sponsors at $1,000 receive business-cardsized recognition in player pamphlets, putting green visibility and recognition during tournament activities. Lieutenant Sponsors at $500 receive business name and logo recognition in player pamphlets, as well as a driving-range sponsor sign. The experience extends beyond sponsorship banners and signage. Food and beverage sponsorships create another avenue for businesses and individuals to participate in the day. The Morning Ration Sponsorship provides breakfast for up to 150 players, while the Chow Sponsorship supports lunch for the same number of participants. A Canteen Sponsorship supports beverages for the field. The auction is one of the most impactful components of the event, with donated experiences helping maximize proceeds for the West Palm Beach VA Resource Center while reducing overall event costs. Opportunities can range from restaurant, retail and entertainment gift cards to golf experiences, hotel stays, weekend getaways, dining packages, event tickets, wellness services, merchandise and carefully curated experiences. With a full field of 144 players, donated items also offer businesses a distinctive way to place their brand directly into the hands of an engaged audience through player gift bags. This is perfect for luxury hospitality providers, restaurants, resorts, wellness businesses, retailers and service professionals. There are also opportunities for individuals who may not be in a position to sponsor the tournament but would still like to make a meaningful contribution. Community members and businesses can donate gift cards, golf-related items and experiences, hotel stays, dining packages, event or attraction tickets, wellness and personal services, merchandise or other unique experiences for the silent auction. The organizers can even coordinate pickup of donated items. For those who prefer to give their time, volunteering provides perhaps the most personal way to become part of the event. Volunteers are essential to the tournament’s success, assisting
with event operations, tournament activities and fundraising efforts. Because 100 percent of tournament proceeds benefit the West Palm Beach VA Resource Center, each volunteer hour helps maximize the resources ultimately directed toward veterans in need. “It is a lot of work to coordinate a tournament and events with a silent auction of this size, but our sponsors, staff, volunteers and the business community show up every year to help make this the best and most successful events we host,” Mitchell said. “I’d want a community to trust in and lean on if my back was against the wall. Alec studied dentistry at the University of Maryland, where Alyssa likewise earned her doctorate of dental surgery degree. She completed her residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C., while Alec finished his residency at Tufts University, like his father. The trio works as a team, pooling their experiences and sharing their perspectives to bring patients the best care and aesthetic results. and sometimes, it’s such an easy fix to achieve the right smile,” Alyssa explained. The most revolutionary feature available at deFabrique Aesthetic Dentistry is their ability to provide Same Day Smiles and Same Day Crowns. With these services, patients are able to get veneers and/or crowns in a single day — a process that usually requires temporary replacements and weeks of fabrication at an external lab. The deFabrique team is able to prep teeth, shape the veneers or crowns that will sit on top of the teeth, color match, and install the veneers or crowns in record time because they have all the necessary equipment in-house. For patients who come in with a broken crown or veneer, time is of the essence. Speaking and smiling with a cracked or missing tooth can quickly become a source of embarrassment, and simply eating can become extremely painful. Waiting a few weeks for a dental lab to make a new one can be detrimental to patients. “A lot of people are emergencies — they’re getting married the next day or going to a wedding, and one of their veneers popped off. during that same day, they’ll come in and walk out. Within an hour and a half, they’re done,” Nicolas explained. For patients requiring extensive restorative work with issues on a large number of teeth, two appointments may be necessary. The first is dedicated to assessing the patient and determining the final goal. The second appointment will consist of the prep, creation and installation of the veneers or crowns — all within a single day. If necessary, the doctors can close the office to other patients while they devote their time to hand-crafting and fitting the veneers or crowns in a single session. “Today, we had someone who came in who had been wanting to fix their teeth for years and years, and after a few hours, they walked out with a completely new smile,” Nicolas said. The doctors at deFabrique Aesthetic Dentistry are able to achieve these feats with the technology offered at the offices. The gritty, cement feel of impressions is a relic of the past with the CEREC Primescan machine, which takes digital impressions. Uncomfortable X-rays are no more with their outside-the-mouth X-rays that have even lower radiation rates than traditional
methods. The CEREC Primemill is what allows the doctors to hand-sculpt each veneer or crown, without having to use an external lab. The dentists at deFabrique want every patient to leave the office with healthy, stunning smiles. Nicolas said he feels the most gratified when he is able to show a patient with dental anxiety that a visit to the office can be a good experience. For Alec and Alyssa, the most rewarding aspect of dentistry is seeing the physical and emotional impact of their work. “It’s just giving patients that selfconfidence that they always wanted, whether that is a full smile makeover or something as simple as bonding that just gives them that smile they’ve been looking for,” Alyssa said. “We have patients who come in who are in a lot of pain, who have been insecure about a tooth for a long time. The holiday season will arrive in elegant fashion at the Regency at Avenir Clubhouse on Thursday, Nov. 12, when residents and guests gather for a festive Holiday Boutique from 4 to 8 p.m. Designed as an inviting evening of shopping, discovery and seasonal celebration, the event will transform the clubhouse into a destination for finding distinctive gifts and holiday treasures. Avenir residents Debbi Lee, Carol Solik, Arnee Buchwald and Dina Klein formed a committee to bring this special Holiday Boutique to the community. The boutique offers local vendors an opportunity to highlight their collections and connect with shoppers in an intimate, upscale setting. From jewelry and accessories to home décor, specialty gifts and other carefully selected finds, the event promises plenty of inspiration for everyone beginning — or perhaps finishing — their holiday shopping. For vendors, the event provides an opportunity to secure a table and introduce their products directly to the Regency at Avenir community. Table rentals are $75, making participation an appealing way for small businesses, artisans, designers and specialty retailers to reach an engaged audience while embracing the spirit of the season. For shoppers, the evening is about more than checking names off a holiday list. Boutique-style events offer the chance to discover something unexpected, support local businesses and enjoy a relaxed shopping experience close to home. Whether searching for a special hostess gift, a memorable present or something beautiful for the home, guests can browse a variety of offerings while enjoying the festive atmosphere. Set at the Regency at Avenir Clubhouse, located at 9890 Regency Way in Palm Beach Gardens, the Holiday Boutique is poised to become a stylish addition to the community’s seasonal calendar. With limited space, and the holiday shopping season just around the corner, early registration is recommended.
