OFFICES AND APPARTMENTS / STIRBEI VODA STREET/ BUCHAREST / DIPLOMA PROJECT / ATELIER GEORGICA MITRACHE / 2012 CONTEXT L’immeuble est situé rue Berzei à Bucarest. CONTEXT The site is adjacent to Berzei Street in Bucharest. A recent enlargement of the street space led to cutting into the urban fabric and breaking the existing parcels. Building in such conditions implies reassembling the parts. FUNCTIONS The analysis of the larger area surrounding the site revealed as characteristic the residential and commercial functions. The proposed building is trying to bring together offices and apartments. The two functions are stacked independently on a double vertical path. This inner segregation is directly translated in the design of the the exterior facade. The base of the building containing commercial and public facilities acts as interaction and communication platform for the different users. ACCESS Cobalcescu street front has a certain urban logic: the inner court behind the continuous and compact facades opens to the street through a narrow, covered passageway. This passageway defines a semi-private space containing access to the upper levels. The commercial spaces of the proposed building are organized by two pedestrian paths as an extension of the public street space on Berzei and Stirbei Voda. These passages are opened to the exterior and half covered. The commercial spaces open towards these passageways on two different levels given by the natural slope of the terrain. The access to the office spaces is also from the passageways while the apartments have the entrance directly from Berzei street.

URABN APPROACH We decided to transform the collective dwellings complex into a major scale urban intervention. The existing approach of the urban development of this area of Bucharest doesn’t focus on the pedestrian perception of the city. Therefore we tried to recreate the spectacle of the traditional street using an elevated promenade that can give a powerful impulse for the further development of the area. FUNCTIONS Crossing the neighbourhood, “the bridge” groups different public functions. The entire development is conceived as a “micro-urbanism” with green space at street level, the intermediate bridge level and housing on upper levels. On the bridge level, the urban concentration is sustained by the presence of different public spaces (commerce, cafés, restaurants, bookshop) and pedestrian walkways that link the more private upper levels with the city level. PUBLIC - PRIVATE LINK The project aims to link vertically spaces that are accessible to both residents and visitors, without damaging the quality and the privacy of the housing space. The public areas are mainly accessible from the bridge level. On the upper floors semi-public functions are accessible for the residents: a small library, a nursery, an after school, a fitness room, small office spaces, maker spaces. While the more public functions open up to the inner core, the apartments are oriented to the park and to the city.

SINGLE HOUSE EXTENSION /AVENUE BLUCHER / BRUXELLES / 2014 /K2A

SITUATION EXISTANTE/ EXISTING SITUATI

The existing house with a partially underground level, a garden level and two floors under a sloped roof (one level with dormer windows) is located in a bourgeois neighbourhood of Brussels. The natural slope of the terrain generates a two-level garden. I. Building a garage in the existing slope. This underground garage allows the creation of an individual office or a game room at ground floor. Also the garage roof becomes terrace for the garden level. II. II. The extension of the ground floor. By extending the ground floor, we integrate a new exterior staircase that links the two levels of the garden. Integrated into the landscape proposal of the garden, a passageway is created along the south facade. The new volume gives the appearance of a socle on which the house is placed. Three niches are created: the garage entrance, the office entrance, the main entrance.

SITUATION PROJETEE / PROPOSAL

III. L’extension sur trois niveaux côté Nord - Est. III. A new volume with three levels is added on the north-east side of the house. IV. IV. The interior was completely reorganised. Taking advantage of the natural slope of the plot, the main entrance was moved at the court level. An opening was created in the slab between the garden level and the 1st floor to generate a double height space for the living room. V. Giving the impression of a monolith building, dark colour materials were used for both facade and roof.

SITUATION PROJETEE / PROPOSAL

Six themes are gathered in a central knot that works as a table of contents for a book. Since the themes have no hierarchy the sections can be accessed independently resulting in personalized tours of the museum. All six are placed at the underground level extending upwards in the garden by means of small pavilions that contain references to specific tales. The seventh section is organized around the birthplace of the author and is treated as an exception. The cultural centre is partly integrated in the museum, partly placed on the outer limits of the site creating enclosures for the garden. It is accessed both from the upper and lower levels.

tema1

The themes, with a literary origin, are a way of structuring the contents of the museum into seven separate coherent sections that, when put together, create a complete, multi-perspective image of the writer’s universe. Each section gathers fairytale-related content by exploring the motifs associated to the theme, objects belonging to the current museum and relevant information about Andersen’s life and legacy. Thus exhibits are valorized by the way they are cross-referenced.

tema1

The entire solution is subordinated to the curating concept of organizing the museum into theme sections, integrating it with the cultural centre, and to the idea of making the garden become the centre of the complex.

H O U S E O F FA I RY TA L E S Hans Christian Andersen in 7 stories / I N T E R N AT I O N A L C O M P E T I T I O N / 2 0 1 4 / TEAM:Maria Elena Oprescu, Maria Daria Oancea, Alina Panait, Diana Stanciulescu, Tu d o r E l i a n , M a t e i S t e a n

1. THE KNOT The “KNOT” is the point of access in the different sections of the museum, it is imagined as a circular lobby with multiple doors above which a quote is placed to give a hint about the theme it leads to. A “place between worlds”, neutral, tensed and intensely frequented, which works like a table of contents.

2. THE 6 THEMES STRUCTURING THE MUSEUM INSPIRED BY ANDERSEN’S WRITINGS

The Journey Corresponding Tale: “Thumbelina” Quote : “At length they reached the warm countries, where the sun shines brightly, and the sky seems so much higher above the earth.” The journeys have been a most important part in the Andersen’s universe as a way of escaping and building an Identity. Travelling not only enabled him to enrich his stories, to experience the condition of the foreigner and meeting famous people of the age but also to form coherent vision of Denmark while “belonging to the world”.

Tales and objects belonging to the museum to be put on display

Self-Sacrifice Corresponding Tale: “The Wild Swans” Quote: “Oh, what is the pain in my fingers to the torment which my heart endures?” Self-sacrifice is the way to accomplish transformation for the better and it is often done in the name of sibling love or unrequited love.

Redemption and Retribution Corresponding Tale: “The Little Mermaid” Quote : “You have suffered and endured and raised yourself to the spirit-world by your good deeds and now you may obtain an immortal soul.” The moments of illumination in Andersen’s tales come when tackling the theme of redemption and retribution. This section is a collection of such moments that the characters achieve by forgiveness, liberation, understanding and the author achieves by writing.

The knot leading to the 6 major themes

Truth and Appearance Corresponding Tale: “The Ugly Duckling” Quote : “It doesn’t matter being born in a duck-yard when you have been hatched out of a swan’s egg.” This section presents Andersen’s response to the fact that “people don’t see through the heart of things”. Either imposed by the structure of society and class or by the gap between reality and desires this defines the condition of the outcast and determines transformation.

Time Corresponding Tale: “The Snow Queen” Quote : “And they both sat there, grown up, yet children at heart; and it was summer, warm, beautiful summer.” The section of the museum dedicated to Time is separated Into four ages, each corresponding to a season as in the “Story of the Year”.

Death Corresponding Tale: “The Story of a Mother” Quote : “I am His gardener, I take all His flowers and trees and plant the out in the garden of Paradise, in the unknown land .” The theme of Death is explored in many ways by the writer, ranging from murder to death as a consolation. Motifs: Reunion with the Dead, the Bone Horse, Death as a Character, Final Judgment, Eternal Life, Funeral, Ghosts, Grave, The Graveyard

3. THE GARDEN

The garden is the starting and the ending point of every type of circuit that the House of Fairytales can offer. It too has different layers of perception: it can be experienced as both a pleasant resting place and as a series of discreet references to the fairytale world of H.C.Andersen. While visiting the museum new connections are established between its content and these exterior references and upon the exit the garden appears in a whole new light enriched with meaning. This is done by “framing instances of the garden that are intelligible by means of a code received inside.
