More Than A Theatre
Bruce Holliday - Board of Trustees One of the privileges of writing my newsletter, Flat Rock Together, is having a front-row seat to the life of this remarkable community. Each week, I write about the people, places, and organizations that help make Flat Rock special. And, again and again, I am reminded how deeply Flat Rock Playhouse is woven into the very fabric of this village. The Playhouse is a professional theatre producing exceptional performances. But it is also something more. For over seven decades, it has been a gathering place where neighbors reconnect, visitors discover our community, students explore creative opportunities, volunteers share their talents, and audiences experience the joy of live storytelling together. The impact of the Playhouse also extends well beyond the stage. Each season, thousands of theatre patrons dine in local restaurants, shop in local stores, stay in area lodging, and explore this beautiful corner of the world before and after performances. The Playhouse serves as both a cultural destination and a powerful economic engine, helping support businesses throughout Flat Rock and Henderson County. Perhaps most importantly, the Playhouse strengthens the sense of connection that defines healthy communities. The arts remind us that we are part of something larger than ourselves. They create shared experiences, spark conversations, and foster a sense of belonging through the simple act of gathering together. As a member of the Playhouse Board of Trustees, I have gained a deep appreciation for the dedication required to sustain a professional theatre. As a community storyteller, I see how Flat Rock Playhouse contributes not only to our economy but to our shared identity. It helps make Flat Rock the place we are proud to call home. Thirty years after its premiere, RENT remains far more than a time capsule of New York’s East Village. At its heart, it asks questions that artists—and human beings—have been asking for centuries: How do we create when the world feels uncertain? How do we love in the face of loss? And what makes a life meaningful? The details of these characters’ lives may not be our own. Their questions almost certainly are. Jonathan Larson drew inspiration from La Bohème, reimagining a nineteenth-century story for the struggles of his own generation. Yet those struggles—poverty, illness, ambition, friendship, and the search for belonging—didn’t begin with Larson, and they haven’t ended with him. Every generation tells this story. What has always drawn me back to RENT is its humanity. These characters are dreamers. They make art. They argue. They fail. They forgive. They build a community that helps them endure what none of them could face alone. Whether you’ve known these songs for decades or are experiencing them for the first time, these questions remain as urgent—and as human—as ever. Perhaps that’s why this story continues to endure: it reminds us that the people we love, the communities we build, and the things we create together are what give our lives meaning.

THE CAST NAT ZEGREE* (MARK) Premiering as the first regional Jerry Lee Lewis in MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, and playing over 600 performances as The Killer, he has played the role at such theatres as Ogunquit Playhouse (2015/2016), Papermill Playhouse (2017), Marriott Theatre (Chicago Jeff Award winner) and many more! (Including Flat Rock Playhouse!) A composer/recording artist, he has also written multiple original musicals, including FLY MORE THAN YOU FALL, which played off West End in London in 2024, with The Guardian hailing it as “one of the best original scores in years”. His other original musical “THE KINGS CRITIQUE” will be opening Off-Broadway at the Signature Theatre in New York City this November. A multitalented showman and classically trained pianist, Nat writes and performs his own original one man shows, by himself or with Orchestra, and performs them Globally, including “MOZART TO POPCHART”, “THE HISTORY OF ROCK N ROLL”, “100 YEARS OF DISNEY” and many more. His music can be heard on the CBS original series THE GOOD FIGHT, and he (literally) played Mozart in the first production of AMADEUS where the Mozart plays all the music live, right here at FRP. His voice could be heard as a virtual singer in the Broadway hit musical DEAR EVAN HANSEN. Want a private performance with Nat? THE CAST LINDSAY ANDREWS (ENSEMBLE) is so excited to be back at the rock for her second year as an apprentice! She is a NYC-based singer and actor, originally from Buffalo, NY. Last year, Lindsay was seen performing in LETTERLAND ALIVE! and GREETINGS FROM NORTH CAROLINA around elementary schools in the Carolinas, as well as performing in the world premiere workshop of RUMPELSTILTSKIN. Additionally, some of her favorite regional credits include TICK… TICK…BOOM! (Susan and Others), ALL SHOOK UP (Miss Sandra), and THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY (Marian) at the Hackmatack Playhouse. Besides theater, Lindsay is also an active jazz and cabaret singer around the boroughs of NYC and has done stand-up comedy at the historic Gotham Comedy Club through the Manhattan Comedy School. Originally from Boone NC, Sean studied at Eckerd College and Circle in the Square Theatre School to gain a BFA in musical theatre. He has been working in NYC ever since and joined the Alumni Theatre company of Circle in the Square: Dot in the Box. He’s since made his off Broadway Debut at the Players Theatre in the anthology play MR. TOFFEY TUCK. Some of Sean’s Favorite Roles he’s played include Melchior: SPRING AWAKENING, Nick Bottom: SOMETHING ROTTEN, and his unforgettable time as Red Robot: LETTERLAND ALIVE, Which he Performed with the Playhouse last summer. Sean has a special love for New work and Shakespeare and is of the mind set that he is always a student at heart and there’s always more to learn. MISCHEL JOHNSON (ENSEMBLE) is a multifaceted performer and graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design. She is absolutely thrilled to return to Flat Rock Playhouse as a second year Apprentice! RENT PRODUCTION FOLKS LISA K. BRYANT (DIRECTOR) This year marks Lisa’s 12th season as the Artistic Director for the State Theatre of North Carolina. Beginning her FRP career as an Apprentice, Lisa has been proud to serve the theatre through the years as a student, actor, teacher, and director. Lisa is proud to have introduced the critically successful Black Box Series where she directed the hilarious GOD OF CARNAGE, and a sold out run (and all-new interpretation) of Shakespeare’s MACBETH. VINCENT ORTEGA (CHOREOGRAPHER) is a director and choreographer whose work spans theater, live entertainment, and major events worldwide. Directing credits include IN THE HEIGHTS (Gateway, White Plains), ON YOUR FEET, EVITA, THE WEDDING SINGER, and THE ADDAMS FAMILY. His choreography has been seen in productions of ON YOUR FEET, ELF, HEAD OVER HEELS, SISTER ACT, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, and SPAMALOT, among many others. He discovered his passion for music direction while working on a student-led production of BIG FISH at UGA and has been hooked ever since. Nathan has served as music director for numerous productions at theaters, schools, and summer camps throughout the Southeast. Among his favorite projects are 1776, THE SECRET GARDEN, and Camp Merrie-Woode’s 2021 production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, for which he composed an original score. At the Playhouse, Nathan enjoys both music directing mainstage productions and working with Playhouse Jr., where he helps students of all ages discover a love of performing. FOOTLOOSE marks Nathan’s second mainstage production on “The Rock,” and he looks forward to many more. ETHAN ANDERSEN (MUSIC SUPERVISOR) Ethan is grateful to be a Vagabond and to help bring top quality theatre to this community. FOOTLOOSE is his FRP directorial debut. He’s also served as a writer, educator, actor, apprentice director, and apprentice in his time at the playhouse. He was the music director and conductor of the SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER national tour and Elon University’s Music Theatre program. On Broadway, he’s played piano for MEAN GIRLS and Company and conducted for BCEFA’s Easter Bonnet Competition. As a writer, Ethan is a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, ASCAP, and Dramatists Guild. He is proud to be building the Playhouse Jr. Licensing program, featuring his new musicals SLOWPOKE!, ROOTABAGA EXPRESS!, LETTERLAND ALIVE!, and GREETINGS FROM NORTH CAROLINA! Ethan received a BFA in Music Theatre from Elon University. AND Proud new father to a baby girl! DENNIS C. MAULDEN (SCENIC DESIGNER) Apprenticed with the Playhouse in 1967 and continued for 11 years as Equity Stage Manager and Scenic Artist. He became Resident Scenic Designer in 1985 and joined the full-time staff in 2000. With an MFA degree from UNC-Greensboro in 1977 and membership in United Scenic Artists,
New York Local #829, Maulden has designed standard and classical repertory works, experimental projects, new plays, operas, and musicals in regional, university, and New York theatres. Proud to have contributed to the theatre’s physical and aesthetic growth, artistic production quality, and strong educational development, Dennis feels particularly blessed to be a part of the Playhouse family. denniscmaulden.com TIM BARHAM (COSTUME DESIGNER) is eagerly anticipating his role at Flat Rock Playhouse this season. Prior to relocating to North Carolina and establishing a charming tiny house community with his husband, Tim dedicated 28 years to the esteemed position of Costume Designer at Knott’s Berry Farm in Southern California. He was the mastermind behind the stunning costumes for 25 MainStage productions every year! Upon his retirement, Tim found his way back to costume design and is fortunate to collaborate with a talented team of costume shop staff and volunteers. To share another season with such a creative production team is a profound blessing. MONTANA KERN (LIGHTING DESIGNER) Joined the Flat Rock Playhouse team in July of this year as the Head of Lighting and Projections. Montana is based in Greenville, SC Where he has worked as a Theater Mercenary for over 12 years. He designs regularly for theaters in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia & Kentucky. Why not Tennessee? He asks himself the same thing. Notable recent credits include KING JAMES at the Warehouse Theatre in Greenville, GYPSY at Tryon Fine Arts Center, and AANIKA’S ELEPHANTS at the New Victory Theater on Broadway, Which he hopes will impress you. KURT DAVIS (SOUND DESIGNER) is thrilled to return to Flat Rock Playhouse for his fifth season as Head of Sound. Kurt graduated from The University of Mississippi in 2015, receiving a B.F.A. in Theatrical Design & Production emphasizing in Sound Design. Since then, he has worked in multiple performing arts venues across the country, including Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC, New Stage Theatre in his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, and The Warehouse Theatre in Greenville, South Carolina. Favorite designs include BEAUTIFUL, THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG, and MACBETH at Flat Rock Playhouse, also THE LEHMAN TRILOGY, JANE ANGER, and HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING at The Warehouse Theatre. He sends all his love to Maggie and the pets. MATTHEW OLIVER (HAIR AND MAKEUP DESIGNER) is a graduate from Stephen F. Austin State University, with a BA in theatre with a second major in Art History. He also holds a cosmetology license from Paul Mitchell. He has designed and ran shows all over the country. RENT PRODUCTION FOLKS LAURA LEDIN (SCENIC CHARGE ARTIST / ASSISTANT DESIGNER) holds an MFA in Scenic Design from Illinois State University, where she designed and led numerous productions while managing the Paint Shop and teaching courses in scenic design and painting. Before joining FRP she worked as a Scenic Artist with Broadway Sacramento and the Illinois Shakespeare Festival. Past scenic design credits include Prom: The Musical, Medea, and FRP’s upcoming production of Rumpelstiltskin: A Folk Musical Spin. She is thrilled to be helping create theatre here on the Rock and wants to give a special shoutout to the production team for all their hard work. THOMAS WILLSON (TECHNICAL DIRECTOR) graduated from the State University of New York at Fredonia with a BFA Production and Design degree. Before joining Flat Rock Playhouse, Thomas served as the Head Carpenter for the National Tours of HAIRSPRAY, MEAN GIRLS and FUNNY GIRL. BILL MUÑOZ (PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGER) 37 years as a proud Union Member of Actor’s Equity Association. This season will be Bill’s 35th at Flat Rock Playhouse! Starting out as an apprentice in 1985, through subsequent years, he went from Scenic Carpenter to Actor to Stage Manager to Fight Choreographer to year-round staff as Production Manager. Although now he “stepped down” to only be hired seasonally, he always looks forward to return to this special community at the “Rock.” Special thanks to those who support live theatre and make the arts an important contribution to society. Much love to his wife and daughter, the two most important people of his life. AMELIA DRISCOLL* (STAGE MANAGER) is excited to be back at Flat Rock Playhouse for another wonderful season! Amelia started working at the former FRP downtown Hendersonville location in 2015. Since then, she’s worked as an Assistant Stage Manager and Production Stage Manager at the FRP downtown space, the FRP Mainstage, North Carolina Stage Company in Asheville, and at various theaters in North Carolina, South Carolina, and California. Favorite productions she’s worked on at FRP include WEST SIDE STORY, CINDERELLA, MACBETH, MAMMA MIA, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, and more. When she’s not at the theater, Amelia enjoys taking on adventures. She’s bikepacked across Florida, caved and whitewater rafted in Costa Rica, and ridden camels through the Sahara Desert. (If you’re looking for an adventure buddy, let her know after the show!) And, speaking of the show, she very much hopes you enjoy the production. RILEY HEWITT (ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER) has been with Flat Rock Playhouse for 15 years. He started off as a child actor, then moved on to the technical world. He has worked in almost every department: education, carpentry, electrician, stage management, and deck crew. He has worked on countless productions and hopes to continue working on them. The Rock is his home and he could not imagine being anywhere else.
ADAM GOODRUM (PRODUCTION MANAGER) Adam graduated from UNC School of the Arts in with a B.F.A. in Technical Direction. After graduating he went to Goodspeed Opera House where he spent 3 years climbing the ranks from a Carpenter, Lead Welder, Master Carpenter to their Assistant Technical Director 2007. He then moved to DC to become Signature Theatre’s Technical Director. After a year with Signature he returned to Goodspeed to take over as their Technical Director where he stayed from 2009-2013. In 2013 Adam moved closer to home and joined the Flat Rock Playhouse staff where he took on the position of Technical Director, and in 2014, he moved up to be the Production Manager. Adam is happy to have found his place back in his home state of NC where he is closer to family and friends and where he and his wife, Samantha welcomed their first child Ryden to the Vagabond Family in 2018. KENZIE CONNER (PROPS MANAGER) Kenzie is thrilled to be part of the Cats team. They hold a Master’s degree in Wig and Makeup Design from UNCSA and work as a Hair Local on national tours with IATSE Local 574. With a strong passion for character-driven design and storytelling through hair and makeup, Kenzie is grateful for the opportunity to collaborate on this iconic production. Special thanks to the cast, crew, and creative team for helping bring these Jellicle cats to life. MADDIE FRANKE (DANCE CAPTAIN) started as an apprentice at FRP in 2008, and they just can’t seem to get rid of her. She has appeared in 26 shows here at the playhouse , and her most recent credits include FOOTLOOSE, BEAUTIFUL, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, BOEING BOEING, CABARET, and JERSEY BOYS. In addition to performing she also a choreographer and is on the marketing team here at the Playhouse. Charlotte and Bob Otto For Charlotte and Bob Otto, Flat Rock Playhouse is much more than a theater. It is a gathering place where artists, audiences, students, volunteers, and families enrich the life of the community. When the Ottos moved to Upstate South Carolina in 2010, they worried they were leaving behind the world-class theater they had enjoyed for many years in Cincinnati. Then friends introduced them to Flat Rock Playhouse, and they quickly became two of its most enthusiastic supporters. Sixteen years later, Charlotte serves as President of the Flat Rock Playhouse Board of Trustees, and the Ottos are proud sponsors of the 2026 Mainstage Season. Over the years, Charlotte has watched the Playhouse weather challenges and grow stronger through the dedication of the people who make it all possible. “No matter what comes their way, they find a way to keep creating something extraordinary. The Playhouse truly reflects the strength and resilience of this community.” The Ottos are also passionate advocates for the role the theatre plays in shaping lives. “The arts help people express themselves, grow, and connect with one another,” Bob says. “That’s especially important for our young people.” For Charlotte, the Playhouse’s impact extends far beyond the stage. “It’s a gift to the community. It’s artists, patrons, students, parents, volunteers - all contributing to something larger than themselves. Keeping Creativity Comfortable Community Foundation of Henderson County helped Flat Rock Playhouse replace HVAC systems in its education building, creating a more comfortable space for arts education and community programs year-round. Gifts through Community Foundation provide grants to address community needs, support nonprofits’ charitable missions, and fulfill philanthropic passions.

Discover the power of local philanthropy. JONATHAN LARSON (AUTHOR) received the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for RENT. He also won the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 1994 Richard Rodgers Award for RENT and twice received The Gilman & Gonzales-Falla Theatre Foundation’s Comendation Award. In 1989 he was granted the Stephen Sondheim Award from American Music Theatre Festival, where he contributed to the musical “Sitting on the Edge of the Future”. In 1988 he won the Richard Rodgers Development Grant for his rock musical Superbia, which was staged at Playwrights Horizon. He composed the score for the musical J.P. Morgan Saves the Nation, which was presented by En Garde Arts in 1995. Mr. Larson performed his rock monologue tick, tick... BOOM! at Second Stage Theatre, The Village Gate and New York Theatre Workshop. In addition to scoring and song writing for “Sesame Street”, he created music for a number fo children’s book-cassettes, including Steven Spielberg’s “An American Tail” and “Land Before Time”. Other film scores include work for Rolling Stones magazine publisher Jann Wenner. He conceived, directed and wrote four original songs for “Away We Go!”, a musical video for children. RENT, his rock opera based on “La Boheme”, had its world premiere on February 13, 1996 at New York Theatre Workshop. Mr. Larson died unexpectedly of an aortic aneurysm on January 25, 1996, ten days before his 36th birthday. His music (including songs cut from his shows) is archived in the Library of Congress.

Since its inception, the Flat Rock Playhouse Apprentice Program has served as a launching pad for emerging theatre artists—onstage, backstage, and across the wider entertainment industry. Apprentices have gone on to careers on Broadway, national tours, and in major creative and production roles throughout the arts sector. This series celebrates those journeys and the impact of early professional training at the Playhouse. Renee McSorley began her theatrical path as an Apprentice at Flat Rock Playhouse in 2007 and 2008, an experience she credits as foundational to her career in the arts. Immersed in the Playhouse’s collaborative environment, she developed a deep understanding of leadership, community engagement, and creative discipline. Renee returned to the organization from 2012 to 2014, expanding her impact through several pivotal roles: Equity Stage Manager (2013–2014), Company Manager (2013), and Apprentice Director (2014). Each position strengthened her ability to lead teams, manage productions, and foster supportive, high‑functioning creative environments. These formative years shaped the professional rigor she carries into her work today. Now a Producer and Vice President of Creative Production with Free Association Live, Renee leads large‑scale, multi‑million‑dollar projects around the globe, bringing ambitious creative visions to life. She lives in Huntsville, Alabama, with her husband, their two children, and a sweet fur-baby.
