The acronym LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) has a long history that started with the term "gay" being used to describe a liking for the same sex in the mid-1900s. By the 1960s, the term had become widely accepted and marked the beginning of the gay rights movement. The term GLB (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) emerged in the 1970s to better represent lesbian and bisexual identities. In the 1990s, the T was added to the acronym to include transgender individuals, and more recently, the letters I (intersex) and A (asexual) have been added to some versions of the acronym to show inclusivity and diversity. Today, the acronym is often seen as LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIA+ to reflect the range of identities and preferences within the community.
