Facility managers have a lot of responsibilities, including creating a diverse and inclusive workforce. However, data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the facility management field has largely failed to achieve diversity, with only 21% of facility managers being female and 24.3% being non-white. To promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, facility management leaders can expand their recruiting efforts to diverse communities, adjust their hiring practices to eliminate unconscious biases, and engage their employees to address issues of equity and inclusion. Additional strategies for creating DE&I opportunities in the workplace include setting targets for diversity in the candidate mix, eliminating photos from resumes, and providing a safe space for employees to voice any concerns.
