Flagler Museum Lecture Series ANNUAL PROGRAM CONCLUDES WITH INSPIRING CONVERSATIONS The Flagler Museum Lecture Series welcomes experts and authors presenting on various subjects that align with the Museum’s three pillars: Art & Design, Leadership & Philanthropy, and Technology & Innovation. By placing these pillars at the heart of our programming, we celebrate the role of beauty and creativity in shaping cultural history, underscore the importance of vision and service in advancing civic and cultural progress, and highlight the enduring power of human ingenuity and innovation. This year’s Lecture Series explored how the Gilded Age ushered in modern America through

advancements in restoration, costume design, media and cultural influence, “smart homes,” the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, philanthropic legacies of figures like Bunny Mellon, and decorative arts and craftsmanship from firms like E.F. Caldwell & Co. Overall, this year’s series showed how the Gilded Age was a turning point that shaped modern America, from infrastructure and technology to culture, media, and philanthropy. The enthusiasm and engagement of our supporters made this Season’s Lecture Series truly special. Strings Across Time and Tradition MUSICAL SPLENDOR AT THE HEART OF PALM BEACH

Flagler Museum Music Series

This year’s Music Series presented an elegant season of chamber music at Whitehall, pairing world-class performances with the refined ambiance of the Palm Court. Held over five Tuesday evenings from February through March, it featured acclaimed artists including the Isidore String Quartet, Jolente De Maeyer and Nicholaas Kende, the Poulenc Trio, Trio Gaia, and Paul Galbraith. Each concert offered distinctive interpretations of classical and contemporary works, culminating in opportunities for audience engagement. The series celebrated the enduring power of live music— bringing together artistry, history, and ambiance in a setting that reflects the cultural sophistication of Henry Flagler’s era. Bluegrass in the Pavilion

The Museum continued a beloved tradition of bringing authentic American roots music to the heart of Whitehall, offering an afternoon of high-energy performance in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Held on April 11, 2026, the concert featured two award-winning bluegrass acts—Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Carson Peters & Iron Mountain. Audiences experienced everything from classic “high lonesome” harmonies to dynamic instrumental showcases, reflecting bluegrass music’s deep roots and evolving sound. The program also highlighted the Museum’s ongoing commitment to cultural programming, with proceeds supporting its educational initiatives. More than a concert, Bluegrass in the Pavilion celebrates community, heritage, and the enduring appeal of live music—continuing a tradition inspired by the Flagler family’s legacy of gathering people together through shared cultural experiences.

Annual Oyster Roast

Inspired by Mary Lily Flagler’s legendary gatherings for guests such as the Duke and Duchess of Manchester, the Oyster Roast revived one of Palm Beach’s most cherished traditions. Museum Members at the Innovator level and above enjoyed oysters and champagne beneath the evening sky and celebrated the enduring coastal delicacy and convivial spirit that once defined hospitality at Whitehall. Guests were welcomed with specialty cocktails courtesy of Komos Tequila, while The Lazy Oyster served coastal delicacies and Tropical Smokehouse offered an array of savory barbecue favorites. Exceptional cuisine, lively music, and warm fellowship combined to create a truly memorable evening.

Easter Egg Hunt

The Flagler Museum welcomed Members to a festive Easter Hunt on April 4th, transforming its historic grounds into a vibrant springtime celebration. Families delighted in games & crafts, face painting, balloon art, a visit from Peter Rabbit, and petting zoo fun. A highlight of the morning was the unveiling of the “Red Bug” automobile, a rare and culturally significant vehicle generously donated by Palm Beach resident Diana S. Wister and her family. An iconic symbol of early 20th-century leisure and innovation in Palm Beach, the Red Bug added a distinctive and memorable touch to the festivities.

Director’s Spring Luncheon

A beloved Whitehall tradition, the Director’s Spring Luncheon gathered Museum Members at the Visionary level and above for an elegant afternoon in gratitude for their generous support of the season’s programs. Guests enjoyed remarks from Amanda Skier, the Museum’s Director & CEO, reflecting on the season past and the exciting vision ahead. The lunch also featured a moderated panel discussion on The Future of Department Stores and Retail Culture, which included Simon Doonan, former Creative Director of Barneys New York and guest artist for May I Help You, Madame: The Making of the Modern Department Store, Anne Fairfax, AIA, RIBA, Fairfax & Sammons Architects, and Kyle Bartholemew Fant, AIA, Bartholemew and Partners.

Dinner on the Waterfront AN INTIMATE EVENING CELEBRATING STEWARDSHIP AND SUPPORT The Flagler Museum welcomed one hundred of its most dedicated members for an elegant, invitation-only evening set along the storied waterfront of Whitehall. Framed by sweeping views of the Intracoastal Waterway and the West Palm Beach skyline, the al fresco gathering marked a meaningful close to the season and a celebration of the community whose support continues to shape the Museum’s future. Starting with cocktails on the estate’s south portico, guests gathered in a setting that reflects Whitehall’s enduring legacy—from its origins as a private home to its evolution into a cultural landmark deeply connected to the history and vision that shaped Palm Beach. The evening underscored the vital role of the community’s help in carrying this tradition forward and advancing the Museum’s mission. The evening featured a special presentation by Campbell Mobley, Chief Curator of the Flagler Museum, and an introduction to Carol Woolton, internationally renowned jewelry historian, author, and Guest Curator of the Museum’s forthcoming 2027 exhibition, Gilded Age Jewelry: The Making of Modern Luxury. The exhibition—poised to be the most ambitious in the Museum’s history—will bring together exceptional works, significant loans, and new scholarship, signaling a bold new chapter for the institution. “Because of this community, we have been able to strengthen our programs, deepen our scholarship, and refine the experience we offer to our audience—setting a higher standard for what the Flagler Museum can present going forward,” said Amanda Skier, Director and CEO of the Flagler Museum. Against the backdrop of Whitehall’s enduring elegance, the evening was both a moment of gratitude and a forward-looking celebration—highlighting the momentum of the Museum and the expanding scope of its cultural leadership. AMERICA TAKES THE STAGE:

In the summer of 1893, Chicago unveiled the World’s Columbian Exposition, a “White City” of grand neoclassical buildings, innovative technology, and manicured landscape that declared America’s arrival as a cultural equal to Europe. Designed by architect Daniel H. Burnham and landscape visionary Frederick Law Olmsted, the Fair attracted 27 million visitors seeking the wonder of a meticulously crafted American dream. Henry Flagler was watching. A decade later, he would transpose that vision southward, creating Palm Beach as an American resort destination for wealthy northern travelers seeking escape from the cold. Using his railroad empire and grand hotels as infrastructure, Flagler positioned himself at the center of his own creation, and in 1902, built Whitehall as his permanent residence, constructing it in the architectural language of the Fair itself. Both the White City and Whitehall were exercises in curated fantasy: temporary and permanent monuments to American ambition, wealth, and aspiration.

Both were designed to draw Americans inward, to prove that world-class culture and spectacle need not require a transatlantic voyage. Both harnessed architecture and landscape as tools of persuasion, transforming raw land into destinations that felt timeless and European, yet distinctly American. This exhibition explores how the ephemeral magic of Chicago’s Fair inspired Flagler’s enduring vision for Florida, and how Whitehall stands today as the only permanent monument to that transformative moment in American cultural history. This fall, the Flagler Museum invites you to experience that vision firsthand. America Takes the Stage: From the White City to Whitehall opens November 10, 2026, tracing the arc from Chicago’s dazzling 1893 Exposition to the sun-drenched grandeur of Palm Beach, and revealing how one man’s encounter with America’s greatest architectural dream became the world you are standing in today. FORGING NATURE’S FUTURE:

Environmentalism in Gilded Age America BY VIC TOR I A LE MELL, Research Librarian

During the Gilded Age, major advancements in transportation and industry led to dramatic changes in the lives of everyday Americans. Radical shifts in labor practices contributed to the advent of leisure time and increased access to trains allowed people to travel great distances at a lower cost. This newfound leisure, coupled with train travel, granted many Americans the opportunity to visit places previously unexplored by pioneers or the federal government. Artists such as Frederic Edwin Church and writers like Henry David Thoreau captured the American imagination with beautiful paintings and descriptions of the West and other scenic locations across the United States. Some would be inspired to advocate for protection of these vast landscapes, while others would advocate for their responsible use. 12

John Muir advocated the idea of environmental preservation, as he believed the natural world should be protected and maintained for future generations. Muir emphasized the intrinsic value of natural spaces and was instrumental in establishing multiple national parks, including Yosemite and Grand Canyon National Park. In 1892 he co-founded the Sierra Club to “do something for wilderness and make the mountains glad.” Muir’s passion for wilderness preservation earned him the title of “Father of the National Parks.” Unlike Muir, Gifford Pinchot advocated the idea of environmental conservation, which meant using the environment for its natural resources. Pinchot promoted the sustainable use of resources, including efforts like tree planting to help maintain the environment.

Pinchot believed that the federal government had a responsibility to regulate public lands and help manage the use of natural resources. Pinchot was instrumental in the creation of the United States Forest Service and served as its first leader, empowering local civil servants to make decisions about forestry and conservation. Theodore Roosevelt was friends with both Muir and Pinchot and worked with both men to further establish preservation and promote conservation efforts in America. During his time as president, Roosevelt helped establish more than 230 million acres of public lands, including over 150 million acres as national forests. Roosevelt also created 51 Federal Bird Reserves, which would later become national wildlife refuges. When the National Park Service was officially established in

1916, there were already 35 sites ready to be managed. Roosevelt had helped create 23 of those sites. The late 19th century was a time of rapid industrialization, expansion, and development, bringing vast changes to life in Gilded Age America. These changes inspired a new desire to preserve and maintain the natural beauty of America’s landscapes, and to establish practices for sustainable extraction of natural resources. And the Music Played... A SCRAPBOOK ENTRY, A SERENDIPITOUS DATE AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BUILD SOMETHING WORTH SHARING BY C A MPBELL MOBLEY, Chief Curator

In a nation celebrating its 250th year, there is a particular pleasure in looking backward. Not with nostalgia, exactly, but with the kind of wondering attention that history rewards when you give it time. This summer, as America marks the semiquincentennial of its founding, a word almost as grand as the occasion it describes, I find myself thinking not about 1776, but about a January afternoon in 1902, when music filled Whitehall for the first time. The occasion for this reflection was, fittingly, archival. Our Archivist has been engaged in a sustained research project tracing the social life of Whitehall in its early years, the parties, the balls, the informal gatherings that animated Henry and Mary Lily Flagler’s gift to Palm Beach. In the course of this work, she came across a scrapbook assembled by Russell T. Joy, Whitehall’s first in-house organist. Because if one builds a marble palace with a Music Room of this particular splendor, one must, of course, have an organist. Tucked into Joy’s scrapbook was a clipping from the Palm Beach Daily News, in those days still in its earliest, shiniest years. The paper had been founded in 1897 as The Daily Lake Worth News by brothers S. Bobo and Joel Dean, a seasonal publication serving a town that was itself just discovering what it might become. By 1899 it had been renamed the Palm Beach Daily News and was, remarkably, the only daily paper between St. Augustine and Key West. Its nickname, the Shiny Sheet, earned for its distinctive, heavy newsprint stock, was already in use, a small piece of local 14

mythology beginning to accrete around a very young institution. The entry Joy preserved was dated February 6, 1902. A couple weeks earlier Henry and Mary Lily had moved into Whitehall, the house Flagler had built alongside his new bride. The ink on their first season was barely dry. And yet the entry Joy preserved described something fully realized: the inauguration of the “superb organ in the palatial Music Room at Whitehall,” in the company of a “favored few.”

“His playing was like an Eddystone Light in brilliancy and beauty.” The man who played was Clarence Eddy, and if that name is unfamiliar today, it deserves recovery. Born in Greenfield, Massachusetts in 1851, Eddy was by the turn of the century among the most celebrated organists in the United States and Europe. He had studied in Berlin under the great August Haupt, made important connections with Alexandre Guilmant, Camille Saint-Saëns, and César Franck, and returned to Chicago to build a career that would span more than half a century. His legendary series of one hundred consecutive Sunday recitals at the Hershey Music Hall in Chicago, no program ever repeated, some 500 works in all, was considered a singular achievement

in American musical history. He was a founder of the American Guild of Organists and eventually its first dean, and he had performed at world’s expositions on both continents. When the Chicago Auditorium was built and dedicated in 1891, it was Eddy who designed the organ and played its inaugural program. This was the artist who came to Whitehall in January 1902. The program Joy recorded was European in its ambitions: the Schubert Serenade; the March and Chorus from Wagner’s Tannhäuser; and, the great anchor of any serious organ program, the Fugue in G Minor by Bach. The review Joy pasted into his scrapbook declared that “his playing was like an Eddystone Light in brilliancy and beauty.” The Eddystone Lighthouse, standing on a treacherous reef off Plymouth, England, was among the engineering marvels of its era, a beacon at the edge of the known. To compare Eddy’s playing to its light was not mere flattery. It was a statement about what music could do in the right room, on the right instrument, in the right hands.

The guests that afternoon were themselves a kind of index of American ambition. Admiral and Mrs. George Dewey were present, Dewey, the hero of Manila Bay, then the most celebrated naval officer in the country, whose victory in the Spanish-American War had helped make the United States a Pacific power and earned him a rank, Admiral of the Navy, that no one before or since has held. Mrs. Frederick W. Vanderbilt attended. So did Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Bingham, Mr. and Mrs. N. Stetson and Miss Stetson, and Dr. Andrew Anderson and Mr. Joseph James of St. Augustine, alongside Henry and Mary Lily Flagler themselves. The article described the gathering as “purely informal,” and yet the guest list tells a different story. This was American power at leisure, gathered in a new house at the edge of a new century, listening to Bach. The arrangements, Joy’s clipping notes, had been “fortunately placed in the hands of Russell T. Joy, who is in charge of musical matters at Whitehall.” One imagines him with some satisfaction at that sentence. FEATURES

He had been given something to steward, and he had stewarded it well. He cut out the notice and pasted it into a book, as if to say: this happened, and it mattered. Exactly 58 years later, on February 6, 1960, Palm Beachers were dressing for the Flagler Museum’s Restoration Ball, the founding event of what would become this institution. Whitehall had spent decades as a hotel, its Music Room into a cardroom, its grandeur obscured behind a ten-story addition. The Restoration Ball was the signal that something was being reclaimed. Our archivist noticed the date, February 6, again, and paused. So did I, when she told me. Serendipity in the archive is one of the quiet pleasures of this work. But it also felt like something more than coincidence: a reminder that institutions, like houses, have founding moments that echo. Which brings me to the semiquincentennial, and to a question that has been on my mind as we plan our exhibitions for the coming year. What does it mean to build something out of nothing? The Founders asked that question in the most urgent possible terms.

Culture, Flagler seemed to understand intuitively, does not live in objects alone. It lives in the moment when the organ sounds and the room fills and the people turn toward one another. On February 6, 1902, Russell Joy wrote that down. On February 6, 1960, the Museum declared it still true. The Gilded Age, the era that produced Whitehall, asked it again, with different materials. If the Revolutionary generation conceived the framework, it was the generation of Flagler and Rockefeller and Carnegie and the great industrialists of the late nineteenth century who built it out, at an almost incomprehensible scale. Flagler alone built a railroad the length of Florida, opened the Atlantic coast to travel, and constructed a series of hotels that invented American resort culture. Whitehall was the personal expression of all of that, a house meant not just for habitation, but for gathering, for music, for the active cultivation of a shared life.

left us. More details will follow in the coming months. For now, I will say only that Joy’s scrapbook felt, when our archivist spread it on the table, like a small and perfect opening argument: that the things which last are the things made to be shared. In this anniversary year for our country, it seems worth saying again:we build nothing alone, and nothing worth building was ever meant to be kept to ourselves. Opposite top: Russell T. The 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, that astonishing event that drew 27 million visitors to a gleaming “White City” risen from the marshes of Lake Michigan, was perhaps the era’s most concentrated expression of this ambition. The fair was nominally a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s voyage, but its deeper purpose was a declaration: that the United States had become a cultural and technological power to match any in the world. Its architecture launched the City Beautiful movement; its spectacle inspired the poem that would become “America the Beautiful.” Burnham’s White City was, in every sense, something built out of thin air, an idealized vision of what a country could be, manifested in marble and light and music for a season. Whitehall opened nine years later, carrying some of that same spirit southward. This fall, Whitehall will take up the story of that era in a new exhibition, one that looks closely at what the Gilded Age made, what it aspired to, and what it has

Following its conversion to a luxury hotel in 1926, the Whitehall Hotel offered guests branded stationery as both amenity and advertisement. Writing home on hotel letterhead was a social convention of the era, and for management it served a deliberate purpose: every letter dispatched from Palm Beach extended the hotel’s reach far beyond South Florida, cultivating the kind of aspirational word-of-mouth that no paid advertisement could replicate.
