2025-2026 Season Program Guide

FLAGLER MUSEUM

Building Upon the Legacy: Our Season Ahead

In shaping the future of the Flagler Museum, we sought a framework for our programming that would enable us to become more relevant, reach wider audiences, and draw clearer connections between the past and the present. The Gilded Age, with its dazzling contrasts of wealth, ambition, and innovation, provides fertile ground for such connections. By examining what defined Henry Flagler’s world, we discovered three themes that remain as vital now as they were over a century ago: Art & Design, Philanthropy & Leadership, and Technology & Innovation. These guiding pillars, our “columns,” provide us with a foundation from which we can dig deeper into history while pursuing our mission to preserve, interpret, and share Whitehall and Henry Flagler’s legacy.

Our refreshed identity reflects this balance of tradition and transformation. At its center stands a new mark, both intimate and imperial: Henry Flagler’s monogram. Once inscribed into the wood of his private railcar, it now symbolizes “a return,” to authenticity, to excellence, and to the enduring vision of our founder. In reviving his monogram, we honor not only the man but the ambition that built modern Florida.

This season also brings new programming and expanded membership opportunities, including offerings designed for families and lifelong learners alike. Whether you join us for an exhibition, performance, or lecture, we hope you will feel welcomed, inspired, and connected to the Museum’s evolving story. We look forward to sharing this exciting new chapter with you.

MAY I HELP YOU, MADAME?

The Making of the Modern Department Store

2025 FALL EXHIBITION

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2025 – SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2026

The Flagler Museum will open its 2025 - 2026 Season with the exhibition, May I Help You, Madame? The Making of the Modern Department Store. This exhibition explores the rise of the department store as one of the most influential, and transformative, institutions of modern urban life. Emerging in 19th-century Paris with innovations like Le Bon Marché, the department store quickly became a global phenomenon, reshaping the landscape of commerce, architecture, gender roles, and public space. American interpretations, from Lord & Taylor and Bergdorf Goodman to regional powerhouses like Wanamaker’s, adapted the model to suit a rapidly modernizing society, blending luxury, mass consumption, and spectacle.

At the heart of this transformation was the female figure, both behind and in front of the counter. The “shopgirl” became a new symbol of working-class aspiration, navigating structured employment in elegant surroundings while carving out pathways toward economic independence. Simultaneously, department stores courted the female consumer with unprecedented sophistication, constructing new ideals of femininity through fashion, leisure, and consumption.

This exhibition is underwritten by Templeton Accountants and Advisors.

Charles Courtney Curran and the Romance of American Impressionism

2026 SPRING EXHIBITION

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 – SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2026

The Flagler Museum’s 2026 Spring Exhibition, Golden Hour - Charles Courtney Curran and the Romance of American Impressionism, traces the celebrated American painter’s journey from his Ohio roots to New York, Paris, and the mountaintop artists’ colony of Cragsmoor, New York, where he spent four decades capturing sunlit gardens, breezy mountaintops, and moments of quiet grace. Blending the elegance of the Gilded Age with the airy brushwork of American Impressionism, Curran’s paintings, filled with women in flowing white dresses, playful children, and lush floral landscapes, offer a luminous vision of summer at its most poetic. Drawn from public and private collections, the exhibition includes rarely seen works, early portraits, and period fashions that bring his idyllic worlds to life.

This exhibition is underwritten by Northern Trust and Jeanne H. Olofson.

PALETTES AND PLACES Landscapes in Miniature

2026 PERIOD ROOM INTERVENTION

TUESDAY, JANUARY 13 – SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2026

Palettes & Places: Landscapes in Miniature marks the Museum’s first-ever period room intervention, an exciting new initiative encouraging visitors to linger a little longer in the period rooms and discover something they’ve never noticed before. Featuring more than one hundred nineteenth-century miniature landscape paintings lent by Julie and Michael Meyer, owners of the Meyer Fine Art Gallery in Fredericksburg, Virginia, this exhibition transforms Whitehall’s historic second-floor guest rooms. Each space is thoughtfully composed by the Museum’s curators so that the miniatures harmonize with its distinctive color palette, guiding visitors on a visual journey from mountain to sea as they cross each threshold. Experience Whitehall’s second floor anew through this intimate interplay of color, light, and landscape.

The original version of this exhibition was presented at the Redwood Library & Athenaeum as This Drop of Earth: American Landscape Miniatures 1840-1890 and curated by Caroline Culp.

PERIOD ROOM INTERVENTION LECTURE

This talk, connected to the Museum’s first Period Room Intervention, will highlight Meyer’s enduring appreciation for the American landscape, seen in miniature, reflecting a collector’s lifelong dialogue with art, history, and nature.
