Although summer is brimming with activity at the Club, I welcome the coming of fall and the changes it brings. I’m looking forward to crisp (hopefully cooler) weather and the leaves changing colors. And, of course, there’s nothing better than fall golf in the Midwest!

There are plenty of golf opportunities coming up in September including our One-Day Member/ Guest Event, Couples Golf, Men’s Gross Match Play, The Watson Cup and our ladies’ premier event of the year, The Brigadoon Classic. That’s a LOT of golf! Best of luck to all the players and, can I just say … let’s keep that Watson Cup at Loch Lloyd again this year!

The golf course is very busy in September with Club events, daily play and yes, outside events. As our golf calendar winds down, the biggest women’s event of the year takes place this month. The Brigadoon Classic tees off with practice rounds on September 19th. This annual member/guest is a fun-filled event that takes place through September 21st. If you would like to play, please call the Golf Shop for details. The end of the month also locks the men up in the annual Match Play (Scratch Division). This event always proves to be a grind for the best men players in the Club. One match on Friday, two matches on Saturday and one match on Sunday is “all” one must endure to win the championship. The dates for competition are Friday, September 27th through Sunday, September 29th. Don’t forget to join us on the first tee for our annual Patriot Golf Day benefiting the Folds of Honor on Friday, September 6th. Congratulations to all of our Club Champions! Michael Hillyard, Jim Secrest and Peggy Frazier each won their scratch championships while Sean McGrevey, Dan Elder and Trudy Knotek each won the net divisions of their respective events. Our own Head Professional, Jeremy Dear, recently competed in the Midwest Section PGA Professional Championship at Firekeeper Golf Club in Mayetta, Kansas. This is truly a big event in the world of Club Professionals because each of the 41 PGA Sections throughout the country host a Professional Championship where the top players in their section compete to go to the National Professional Championship. Jeremy finished second in the event and is now officially qualified for the National Professional Championship to be held next April at Barton Creek in Austin, Texas. The top 20 finishers in that event qualify for the PGA Championship. When you see Jeremy, please be sure to congratulate him!

Friday, September 6th 8a to 4p Patriot Golf Day is a nationwide fundraiser that supports the Folds of Honor Scholarship Fund. On September 6th between 8a and 4p, volunteers will be set up on the first tee, accepting donations to benefit the Folds of Honor Scholarship Fund.
WHAT IS FOLDS OF HONOR? Of the one million+ dependents adversely affected by deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan, nearly nine out of 10 do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance. Folds of Honor seeks to meet this need by providing educational scholarships to military families of those who have been killed or disabled while on active duty. More than 85% of all donated funds go directly to the recipients, an efficiency that is rarely achieved in the world of charity. Folds of Honor has provided almost 21,000 scholarships since its inception in 2007 and will award more than 4,000 scholarships in 2019. Relentless rain has been the summer theme for the Golf Course Maintenance team. The continued record-setting amount of rainfall and the domino effect of the conditions have directly and indirectly been impactful to maintaining the property. I’ve been asked a lot of questions as to why something is the way it is or why it isn’t. The simple answer … weather. Not only has it challenged the team to produce a consistent product, but it has also challenged you, our members, to get out and enjoy the course. We have had nearly 20 events either delayed or cancelled due to inclement weather in 2019. As the fall season approaches, the team will continue to work diligently to tackle the daily routine, but also take on some larger maintenance practices such as aeration and overseeding the rough. As you will read below, we’ve also been conducting a few in-house weed control trials on Sechrest.
Behind the scenes, one of the largest projects being undertaken is the maintenance of equipment that we use to look after the property. Our technicians work tireless hours to keep the mowers and other equipment in the best possible condition. Our industry has come a long way in the past several years and I am in the process of working with several companies such as John Deere, Jacobsen/EZGO and Toro to maximize the efficiency of our fleet moving forward. This will be an exciting time for The Country Club at Loch Lloyd to partner with one of the manufacturers where we can leverage and fiscally manage the fleet to serve our needs for years to come. As the season winds down over the next couple of months, it will be a great time to be out on the course and we look forward to seeing you there. On behalf of the entire maintenance team, we want to thank you for your understanding and support for what has been a record-setting year. We tend to live in the moment and focus on the here and now; so as you get out and enjoy the property, please keep in mind that conditions of today may have been directly impacted by yesterday. Sechrest Update by Grant Suderman
The summer heat brings summer weeds. One of the most prevalent weed species in the Midwest region is goosegrass. This annual grassy weed that resembles crabgrass has welcomed itself on the Sechrest course, especially thriving in thin areas within the bentgrass fairways. Recently, we’ve conducted some application trials to eradicate the weed. The challenge is to find the desired effect without damaging the desirable turf. A product called “Pylex” is the best control of this invasive weed species. Without damaging the bentgrass, Pylex selectively kills the weed. During this process, the goosegrass turns bleach white (see picture of the right side of #4 Fairway at Sechrest). This can be unsightly and alarming when first seeing the results. Within a couple of weeks, however, the bleached weeds will fade away and die, allowing the bentgrass to fill in the thin areas. We are very satisfied with the results of the first application and will continue to make applications throughout Sechrest.

Vern Blazek Director of Food & Beverage Vern Blazek brings to The Country Club at Loch Lloyd an impressive background in the food and beverage industry, most recently as Manager of Kansas City’s Capital Grille for the past five years. Vern’s experience also includes management positions with Mia Cucina in Columbus, Ohio as well as Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Houston’s in Kansas City. Vern is committed to providing a high standard of service and is excited about the opportunity to work at the Club and to get to know our members and staff. As a father of five (four sons and one daughter), Vern is also committed to family and takes his responsibility as a parent and father very seriously. During time off work, he enjoys golf, camping and cooking out. Vern and his wife, Mareth (who is General Manager at Gram and Dun), live in Kansas City.
Michael Parker Sous Chef Michael Parker grew up in Texas and attended Letourneau University in Longview, Texas where he studied History, Political Science and Psychology. After college, Michael secured a position at Houston’s Restaurant in Memphis where he fell in love with the kitchen and his culinary career began. From Houston’s, Michael became Executive Chef at Carrabba’s Italian Grill before moving on to Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, both located in Memphis. Most recently, Michael was a culinary partner at the Red Door Grill in Leawood. Michael is engaged to his beautiful fiancé, Sara, and they are planning a winter wedding. Although he has only been at the Club for a short while, Michael is enjoying his time at our beautiful facility and looks forward to what the future holds for him at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd. Meet Kyle Hopkins Brand Ambassador Boulevard Brewing Company Kyle’s persistent passion for all things food and beer related has led him to become the food guru of Boulevard. He has a firm belief that great beer can make great food even greater and vice versa. Throughout the five years Kyle has worked with the brewery, he has hosted countless beer dinners and taken a few turns behind the scenes cooking them as well. Clothology:135 is South Kansas City’s newest boutique, located at 4800 W. 135th Street in Leawood and owned and operated by Pam Burton. Pam is excited to present a fashion show for the Home & Garden Club this month. She’ll bring many styles and provide a small “quiz” for you to take to see where you fall within these styles. It’s a fun way to see what style your personality leans to, then see some fashions that match your style come down the runway! Pam will talk about trends and how to incorporate them into your personal style. She’ll even bring a small portion of the store for a pop-up boutique. Always fun to have some retail therapy!
