October 2019 at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd

Page 1

The months are flying by! We are heading into the season of crisp weather, colorful leaves and more football (Go Chiefs!). As it gets cooler outside, we hope to see more of you inside the Clubhouse. Our new Executive Chef, Jeffrey Lathrop, has made a point of visiting tables and saying hello to members as they dine with us. If you haven’t yet met Chef Jeff … you have a real treat CHRIS BREMS in store. He brings a lightheartedness to PRESIDENT our team and a tremendous passion for all things culinary. He is extremely talented and we are quite fortunate to have him at The Country Club at Loch Lloyd. We hope you’ll join us for dinner, lunch or weekend brunch soon and experience Chef Jeff’s wit and talent for yourself!

As the calendar turns to October, it’s time to start winding down on golf events and time to start thinking about the upcoming holidays. With the exception of a few season-long matches still yet to be played, it’s hard to believe that the golf season is already over … it seems like it just started not so long ago.

SEAN HANNA DIRECTOR OF GOLF seanh@lochlloyd.com

The Brigadoon Classic was a huge success! We want to say THANK YOU to all who participated in this year’s event! A few photos of the event are included below with more captured memories on pages six and seven of this newsletter. October also marks the end of the outside event schedule for 2019. There are three events scheduled on Mondays in October (on the 7th, 14th and 21st) and the Club will host the Deron Cherry Invitational on Tuesday, October 8th (for the 27th year!). The Clubhouse will be open for members on the 8th and the golf course will reopen for member play after the tournament ends. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 26th when the golf course will be playing a little more difficult than normal as we host our 6th Annual Ghostly Greens event. Jeff and his Golf Course Maintenance team will set pins in some very tricky or “ghostly” positions. There is a $20 optional game for all to participate in if you wish.

This fun event is a great way for our Director of Golf Course Maintenance, Jeff Steen, to get “revenge” on all of us by setting the golf course up with “extreme” pin locations. Jeff and his team get to set pins wherever they like on this one Saturday in October. Players beware … pace of play may be a little slower on this day! There is a $20 optional game for those who wish to get in on the “spooky action.” Bring a guest for only $60 that day (plus the additional $20 if they want to get into the game).

Friday, September 6th The Country Club at Loch Lloyd recently took part in Patriot Golf Day, a nationwide fundraiser that supports the Folds of Honor Scholarship Fund. Volunteers were set up on the first tee, accepting donations during First Fridays in September. The Club also had a 5K Run/Walk which took place on Saturday, September 7th. Through the generosity of our members and residents, we surpassed our goal of $20,000! See photos from the Folds of Honor 5K Run/Walk on page 10 of this newsletter!

The 2019 Brigadoon Classic

What a fantastic three days! The Loch Lloyd team did a marvelous job hosting this year’s 2019 Member/Guest Brigadoon Classic, showcasing our beautiful country club and all it has to offer! Every detail (including the weather) was nothing short of perfect! Congratulations to this year’s flight winners (see the winners and celebratory photos on the next few pages).

Mark Your Calendar for October 9th Closing Day! “Rainy days and Mondays (and Wednesdays and Thursdays) always get me down!” You will NOT want to miss LLLGA Closing Day festivities on October 9th. We will be depleting our 2019 budget and spending every last dime (including ALL the rainout money) on cash giveaways. You must be present at the dinner to win the cash! We’re looking forward to this one last opportunity for our association to play golf, dine and present year-end awards. We hope you can join us for LLLGA Closing Day (and please start doing the “no rain” chant now!).

Dear Members,

JEFF STEEN, CGCS DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE jeffs@lochlloyd.com

What a year so far and we still have a few months to go. A year of records. A year of change. A year of challenges. A year to look back on and be thankful for. Adapting to the record weather patterns created real challenges and great opportunities. Some of these challenges have existed for years whereas others have just come to the surface. We have also had the opportunity to build our maintenance team, with half the team being new to CCLL in 2019.

At the time of writing this for the newsletter, The Brigadoon was underway and, once again, another major event for the Club faced the threat of weather. Every major golf event this year has dealt with some form of weather that impacted play, conditions and the experience. In the coming weeks, I will be sending out a member communication piece entitled “Then & Now,” which will highlight some areas of the golf course a year ago vs. today. You might be quite surprised when you see the pictures. Stay tuned!

As we move toward fall, the maintenance team will be extremely busy with continued cultural practices including aeration of fairways, roughs and green surrounds. We will also be overseeding the majority of the roughs to help with our continuous improvement of density to these playing areas. As you will see from the pictures on the next page, the importance of members to help maintain the course is imperative, especially with ball marks and cart traffic. Some of you may recognize the “Cart Rules” we established earlier in the year. Unfortunately, unless this is adhered to regularly, the damage to the turf grass (as seen in the photo of hole #8) will continue. Ball marks are a daily chore for the team. See the photo displaying our tools of the trade below as well as guidelines from the USGA. If members and guests do not contribute to fixing ball marks, it will always be a challenge to keep up. We have included some drone photos taken over the past several months to show you some significant changes to #16 fairway. Everything takes time. You will also see a photo showing recent seed germination as we continue work on Sechrest to produce consistent playing conditions and provide an enjoyable nine holes. Finally, please join me in a round of golf starting in October! I will work with Sean and his team to set up a tee time once a week to play with anyone who would like to spend some time together out on the course. I’m looking forward to it. I will also work with Chris to set up a “Town Hall” meeting later in the month. I would love to visit with members who would like to join me in this Q&A session. However, if you have questions or concerns now, please do not wait until then to contact me. We can’t respond to things we aren’t aware of. The team appreciates your positive feedback, too! As the year winds down, I’d like to wish everyone all the best as we move into another season. Some of you leave the area and, on behalf of the entire maintenance team, we wish you well. We hope to see you on the first tee or around the property soon. Please look for the next communication piece coming your way this month. Jeff Steen, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Thank you to all who participated in our annual Folds of Honor 5K Walk/Run held on September 7th. The weather this year was slightly warmer than in previous years, but those who ran or walked had a wonderful time (as you can see from the photos below). We had an excellent turnout with 51 runners/walkers and six dogs … all helping to raise $2,165 for this great cause!

With the changing of the seasons comes another change for our Club. Executive Director of Food & Beverage, John Geiger, is leaving the FiveStar family. Over the past several years, John has made significant improvements to our Club’s service, procedures, training and menus. We would like to thank John for his leadership and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. We have some exciting events coming up this month including our Silver Oak Wine Dinner on October 16th. This promises to be an evening of incredible wines, paired with an exquisite menu designed by Executive Chef Jeffrey Lathrop. Please read all about the newest addition to our Food & Beverage family below as we highlight this talented man.

October brings crisper weather, colorful trees and spooky adventures to the Club! Ladies … don’t miss our annual Witches Who Wine (and Brew) on October 23r d. We’re adding a costume contest to the event this year and can’t wait to see what creations our ladies concoct. While the witches enjoy their party and the golfers enjoy our Ghostly Greens, we certainly can’t leave out the kids so please bring your young goblins to the Clubhouse for Trunk or Treat on Halloween evening. This is a safe and fun alternative to walking around the neighborhood plus you can stick around for our “Boo-tiful” Pot o’ Gold Buffet. Look for details on all of these events (and more) within this newsletter. If you have any questions or concerns or if I may be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month so we are “keeping it pink” with this month’s featured wine!

Jeffrey Lathrop Executive Chef “I hail from the great state of Texas in the hill country outside of San Antonio where I got my start in the culinary arts at Fair Oaks Country Club. After six years of learning my way around the kitchen, I was accepted into an apprenticeship with Master Chef Neil Anderson. It took only a matter of two or three days before I came to the understanding of how little I really knew about food and the passion of food within. “After two long years of learning alongside Chef Neil, I started to fly with my newfound knowledge. I was blessed to travel around the world five times, working with extraordinary ingredients from amazing places as my culinary adventures continued on board cruise ships, in hotels, in country clubs, in high-volume restaurants and even in hospitals. I have come “full circle” as I now return to where it all began for me … the country club venue. And not just ANY country club but The Country Club at Loch Lloyd! What an honor! I look forward to serving you and yours.” Chef Jeff Page 12

For each glass purchased, we’ll donate $1 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation; for each bottle purchased, we’ll donate $3.

TOAD HOLLOW DRY ROSÉ OF PINOT NOIR This wine offers an alluring rose quartz color with aromas of melon sorbet, peach and baking spice. You’ll experience bright and lively flavors of watermelon, Bosque pear and wild strawberry with a note of a ginger finish. Crisp. Flavorful. Satisfying!

The September Home & Garden Club Meeting was by far one of the largest gatherings we’ve ever had! We would like to thank everyone who attended and send a BIG THANK YOU to our special guest, Pam Burton, owner of Clothology:135 in South Kansas City. Attendees learned a lot about their own personal style and were excited to see their style come down the runway during the Clothology:135 Fashion Show. A little retail therapy (aka “shopping”) added yet another element of fun to the perfect day.
