Ariana Espino
Pursuing a Master’s in Hospitality: Mega Events
Tell us a little about yourself and the program you are in.
My name is Ariana Espino and I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. I am currently enrolled in the Master of Science program in Hospitality Management with a specialization in Mega Event Management. The program offers expertise in planning and executing large-scale events (concerts, festivals, conventions, etc.) through industry members and hands-on experience.
Did you always plan on going to graduate school?
I planned to go to graduate school, but I had difficulty determining which program was right
for me. It felt like it was happening very fast but I wanted to be sure for financial reasons and avoid going in the wrong direction.
What made you pursue a graduate degree?
I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Psychology, fields that often require further study. I knew I wasn’t done with school and started my program about a year after undergrad. When I joined FIU as an Admissions Recruiter, I felt comfortable taking advantage of the educational benefits and achieving a healthy worklife balance.
Why did you choose your program and how did you make the decision?
Marketing was my initial interest, but I wanted a program that catered more closely to my interests. While working alongside our multiple schools and colleges, a presentation by the Chaplin School for recruiting efforts ended up resonating with me more than I expected. In my personal life, I’ve always enjoyed attending concerts and
festivals, so I became curious about the production and logistics that go into creating those experiences. The program also offers a course on Marketing and Sponsorship, and I’ve always appreciated learning from different fields. Altogether, I feel this program provides a strong managerial perspective that aligns with both my passions and career goals.
Any advice for future graduate students?
With one semester left in my program, I’d say that time management is essential when balancing full-time work and graduate studies. Be sure to dedicate the effort needed to complete assignments and try to maintain a consistent routine.
P.S. If you’re specifically interested in a Hospitality graduate program, they offer some great opportunities for experiential learning through student organizations and immersive courses.
Admission requirements vary by graduate program at FIU. Unlike undergraduate admissions, graduate decisions are made directly by each academic program. Therefore, it is essential for prospective students to contact the appropriate program representative for guidance. After doing so, prospective students should:
• Complete an online application by visiting admissions.fiu.edu and submit the $30 application fee.
• Submit official, original transcripts, certificates, and diplomas from all previous institutions. https://go.fiu.edu/transcripts.
• Submit any program specific requirements (personal statement, GMAT/GRE, resume, etc.).
