HISTORY OF THE TORCH In 1972, Florida International University dedicated the Torch of Knowledge, Service and Understanding in memory of the late Ernest R. Graham, the forward-thinking senator who championed the university’s creation. On FIU’s 25th anniversary, the FIU Office of Alumni Relations established the Torch Awards to honor successful individuals who have had a positive impact on their professions, the community and the university. The alumni who are selected represent FIU’s finest – they are our Torchbearers.
ABOUT THE TORCH AWARDS On May 15, 2027, FIU Alumni will host the 20th Torch Awards at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. Established in 2000, the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award is the highest honor FIU bestows upon its alumni, recognizing Panthers whose accomplishments set them apart in their professions, their communities and beyond. The 20th edition marks a milestone in this storied tradition, celebrating the legacy of past honorees while recognizing a new class of alumni whose leadership, achievements and impact represent the very best of FIU. The celebration will bring together accomplished alumni, university leaders and members of the FIU community for an elevated evening honoring this exceptional class of recipients. Guests will enjoy an upscale cocktail reception featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and live entertainment, creating a memorable setting to celebrate achievement, strengthen connections and experience one of FIU’s most prestigious alumni traditions. By participating, you are helping to advance our mission of fostering lifelong connections between alumni and FIU. Net proceeds from the Torch Awards will be used to elevate programming efforts for our community of over 350,000 alumni, ensuring we can continue offering impactful resources and opportunities that sustain FIU’s excellence in academics, research, and community service.

Note that your contribution may be considered tax deductible, where allowed, to the fullest extent under the law as allowed by IRS regulations. Any and all net proceeds from this event, after payment of associated expenses, may be used to support the ongoing work of FIU Alumni. The amount of your contribution that is deductible is limited to the excess of your contribution over the value of the goods and services provided to you.
