s a team we have been in the nursery industry for over 10 years, and one of our favourite thing is meeting all the families along the way. We meet a lot of mums! Excited new mumsto-be, ready-to-pop mums, frazzled experienced mums, young mums, mature mums, mums of one and mums on their way to a whole football team. We love to meet and chat with you all. One thing all our mums have in common is that they love to sit down, have a cuppa and share. Every mum, and every pregnancy, is unique, but one thing every woman seems to agree on is that pregnancy and motherhood aren’t always a bed of roses as the ads would have us believe. There’s a load of stuff your mum and your

grandma never talked about. But, girls, it’s the 21st century, you’re not having it with any of that ‘shut up and put up’ nonsense, and don’t you love to share... From ‘baby brain’ to upset tummies, from fat ankles to farts, and what pregnancy does to your sex life, we’ve heard it all. Your stories often have us in stitches (ouch). One day we thought, wouldn’t it be nice to give you something back – a little bit of a treat, as well as a natural boost for wherever you are in your baby adventure. Our range of herbal infusions has been carefully researched, our recipes tried, tested and tried again, to provide natural support for your body and reproductive system at every stage of your pregnancy. Whether you’re just thinking about it, bonking yourselves silly trying to get that little line to go blue, cradling your tiny bundle of joy and swearing never to have sex again, or anywhere in between, we’ve come up with a special blend just for you. We’ve used only the highest quality ingredients – you’ll find real bits of fruit, flowers and herbs in the bags – each blend has been carefully researched for its benefits (and safety) at every stage of pregnancy. We would love you to come and try one of our 6 blends! Love, Caroline, David and Hamadel xxx materni-te.co.uk

GET KIDS TO RAISE A CUPPA FOR NATIONAL TEA DAY
O
n the 21st April, our nation of tealovers will celebrate National Tea Day. And this year children are being encouraged to get involved by Small & Wild, the happy herbal tea company for kids. With Brits drinking approx. 100 million cups of tea a day*, the entrepreneurial mums behind the Small & Wild felt it was about time kids got their own version of this staple beverage. The company is on a mission to get youngsters enjoying naturally caffeine-free tea with its herbal and fruit infusions created especially for children. The blends in the range have been lovingly crafted to deliver flavours that kids adore, with enticing smells and colours to get their taste buds excited. The teas are made from 100% natural, ethically sourced ingredients and are caffeine free, with no added sugar or nasties, providing a healthy way to encourage kids to stay hydrated. The range was created by tea-loving mums, Kate & Becky. They were frustrated with the lack of healthy, yet tasty, drink options for children and decided to share their passion for a wholesome cuppa with their kids. Kate elaborates: “National Tea Day is a great opportunity to celebrate our nation’s favourite beverage – and children don’t need to be to left out. We hope they’ll join us by supping on our happy herbal blends made especially for them.” Dietitian Laura Clark says: “Small & Wild

xtended time at home these last two years means we’re all looking for something that makes home feel, well, more like home. Not the office or the classroom, but home. A place to relax and switch off. These days your heart skips an extra beat when you find something a little bit special. SarahMicheleDesigns is one of those discoveries. Bespoke hand-painted murals for nurseries and children’s rooms. Any theme can be transformed into a tailormade scheme. Hand painted onto the wall to create happy rooms that inspire wonder and curiosity among little people. The SarahMicheleDesigns vision is to create rooms for little people, which are beautiful, inspiring and calm yet playful too. A much needed alternative to wall stickers and decals. SarahMicheleDesigns are designed bespoke to all budgets. Sarah and her team will work with you to ensure the finished design is exactly what you have in mind. We spoke to founder, Sarah Michele, about what inspired her to set up the business. My business was born out of my own passion for creating beautiful and unique nurseries. Having not been able to find exactly what I wanted for the nurseries I was designing for my own children, I decided to do it myself as I’ve always had a passion for drawing and painting. Friends then referred me to friends and the business was born! Since Sarah launched her business in 2021 it has gone from strength to strength. You only need to read the testimonials she gets to understand that this is a talented lady who

leaves a trail of happy clients. When asked what drives her, Sarah explains, it’s the reactions I get from both the parents and their little ones. When they walk into the room when I’ve finished painting and the first word they utter is ‘wow’ or you see a tear in a mum’s eye. That’s a truly special moment. Whether you are interested in commissioning her yourself or you wish to gift someone special, take a moment lusting over her designs at sarahmicheledesigns.co.uk. The designs and murals are quite simply, stunning.

DISNEYLAND PARIS CELEBRATES 30 MAGICAL YEARS Damon Smith bathes in the resort’s anniversary glow
S
pring sunlight refracts off an iridescent waistcoat buttoned snugly around a six-foot tall bloodhound and pointer mixed breed. He is hunkered close to the ground, scarlet tongue in perpetually cheerful loll, as a pair of doll-like hands tremulously trace every contour of his honeyed snout and jowls. A six-year-old blind girl is connecting with Pluto by touch, her fingers skittering over black whiskers, a bulbous, glistening nose the size of a ripe plum and arched eyebrows. With impeccable timing, the playful pooch guides her gently into the folds of his fur for an extended hug that sends silent, soothing ripples through the hushed throng of parents and on-lookers, some visibly choking back tears. For the first time in two years, since Disneyland Paris closed in response to the Covid pandemic, physical distancing protocols have been relaxed and character meet and greets have resumed at the resort, just in time for the 30th anniversary celebrations. The magic of old has returned to Disneyland Park and adjacent Walt Disney Studios Park, the former boasting a newly renovated Sleeping Beauty Castle resplendent in 14 shades of freshly applied
1 6 A P R / M AY 2 0 2 2
pink paint, with fine gold leaf-encrusted snails slithering up the chateau’s two majestic spires. It is the first major refurbishment of the 141 feet tall centrepiece since the resort opened in 1992 and the candy-coloured cosmetic enhancements gel perfectly with the pearlescent blues, purples and silvers of the anniversary colour palette. Inside the Disney bubble, the fizzing energy and exuberance of cast and anthropomorphic denizens convince us we’re in a wonderland writ large that is 30 going on 13. Several times a day, dancers lead rainbowpanelled floats festooned with 30 characters down Main Street to the three stages in Central Plaza in front of the castle for the Dream… And Shine Brighter! daytime show. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and chums proudly model prismatic costumes that don’t restrict their high-spirited, synchronised movements to a fiendishly catchy anniversary earworm, “Un Monde Qui S’illumine”. Miguel from Coco makes his Disneyland Paris debut flanked by Joy from Inside Out, and Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from Zootropolis, performing two new toe-tapping bops and a feelgood mash-up of 20 Disney songs from animated classics.
“Several times a day, dancers lead rainbow-panelled floats festooned with 30 characters down Main Street to the three stages in Central Plaza in front of the castle for the Dream… And Shine Brighter! daytime show”
A couple of deafening explosions, triggered on the castle ramparts, punctuate the 16-minute jamboree, which conjures shimmering clouds of freshly blown bubbles as the floats depart. Encircling the plaza, 30 kinetic sculptures of Disney and Pixar characters fashioned by local craftspeople in burnished hues take root as a Gardens Of Wonder installation. Arranged as a promenade, some mobiles are instantly recognisable: a generously potbellied Baymax from Big Hero 6 is cocooned by exploding pieces of body armour, while a maniacally grinning Stitch clings onto his ukulele from a vantage point halfway up the trunk of a palm tree. Other fantastical creations seem to owe their swirling, surrealist skeletal structures to Salvador Dali. At night, a biodegradable and 100% natural nutrient serum permits surrounding plants to glow contentedly in the dark.
“Drone technology is incorporated into a daily outdoor show for the first time in any Disney resort” The Disney Illuminations night-time show, which melds video projections on the castle façade with fireworks, illuminated water jets, laser, mist and lighting effects, returns with a bang in Disneyland Park. For the 30th anniversary – weather permitting – the crowd-pleasing spectacle is prefaced by a seven minute-long Disney D-Light sequence, designed by Bordeaux-based company Dronisos. Drone technology is incorporated into a daily outdoor show for the first time in any Disney resort to a soaring soundtrack recorded with a 66-piece symphony orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London. Two teams of four pilots manoeuvre 200 airborne devices to form a sparkling number 30 in the sky, which disperses as a twinkling starry firmament then regroups as a spinning threedimensional globe with the anniversary year as golden scrawl visible at its core. Long days of exploration and wonder require occasional pit stops to refuel and table-service restaurants and other outlets collectively serve up over 60 tasty dishes, desserts and exclusive cocktails, including moreish, melt-in-the-mouth
macarons embossed with the number 30 and a Mickey-shaped dessert of white chocolate mousse entremet and cocoa genoise. More than 350 exclusive items of 30th anniversary merchandise will flood the resort over the course of the celebrations. Currently, products are limited to one location, New Century Notions boutique at the top of Main Street, necessitating a long queue curling through the nearby arcade. Cast members plead polite ignorance about the restricted availability but a soap dispenser that deposits grapefruit-scented foam in the shape of Mickey’s head (£12.50) and a Sorceror’s Apprentice hat in luminous fabric embedded with lights (£29) are both popular. The 30th anniversary celebrations light a fuse on a £1.7 billion expansion of Walt Disney Studios Park, which begins this summer with the opening of Avengers Campus – an immersive playground torn from the pages of Marvel Comics, including a Spider-Man sit-down attraction where visitors sling webs at malfunctioning Spider-Bots with furious flicks of the wrist, and the world’s first Iron Manthemed thrill ride on the site of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, which closed to the public in September 2019. Subsequent years herald a recreation of the kingdom of Arendelle replete with a Frozen Ever After musical boat-ride attraction and an interactive outpost from a galaxy far, far away akin to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The Force is already strong in Marne-la-Vallée.
HOW TO PLAN YOUR TRIP Walt Disney Travel Company International (disneyholidays. co.uk; 0800 169 0737) offers a two-night/three-day stay at Disney’s Sequoia Lodge, including return travel on Eurostar from London St Pancras to Disneyland Paris (Marne-la-Vallée/Chessy) via Lille, in standard class, from £1,376 for two adults and two children, including park tickets. Price based on May 3, 2022 departure date during the 30th anniversary celebrations. Costs for Covid testing apply.

WeTwo, unique three-step haircare range for pregnancy and beyond

eTwo is a brand new haircare range for pregnancy and beyond, formulated and designed by hairdresser Kelly Simpkin-Clarke, alongside the Portland Hospital’s leading gynaecologist Miss Claire Mellon. As a professional hairdresser with 15 years’ experience at the Nicky Clarke salon and a mother of two, Kelly identified the need for a haircare range for mums-to-be - a range that could support the hormonal imbalance and ongoing changes that women go through during and post pregnancy, but which is also kind to the body. Using her credentials and love of essential oils, Kelly spent three years working closely with industry experts to create a range which is completely safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. WeTwo products are free from parabens, silicone, phalates and SLS, with more than 90% natural ingredients, which are all vegan friendly. The result is a capsule haircare range which is a three-step programme and comprises shampoo and conditioner: NOURISH for use 2 2 A P R / M AY 2 0 2 2

Claire was originally Kelly’s gynaecologist and obstetrician, and their friendship and combined expertise led to the two women to partner on the launch of an Intimate Wash, a revolutionary product for feminine hygiene and care, which has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. LAMBORGHINI NEW AUTUMN/WINTER
2022
KIDS COLLECTION
A
utomobili Lamborghini launches its new Autumn/ Winter 2022 collection for kids aged four to sixteen, in collaboration with the Danish children’s wear specialist KABOOKI. The Junior collection encapsulates the essence of Automobili Lamborghini: dynamic and colourful. The range of casual clothes and accessories expresses creativity, dynamism and energy through the use of slogans, deconstructed logos, and an artistic reimagining of iconic elements from the Sant’Agata Bolognese super sports cars. The colours of the children’s lines are immediately redolent of the colours of Lamborghini super sports cars, including yellows, greens, blues and oranges, as well as an on-trend cerise. T-shirts include a reflective black detailed motif on a same-colour background, with a ‘race’ t-shirt in various colours depicting the Aventador SVJ racing across the front. The number 63 is a recurring theme, reminding young super sports car enthusiasts that 1963 was the year Ferruccio Lamborghini created his car company. Leisure wear with a ‘glitch’ effect from gaming screens includes t-shirts, a sweatshirt and even a baseball cap and backpack. Logos on various items are foil printed, reflective and even rubberised: the Automobili Lamborghini brand, like its clothing, is about being authentic, brave and living life to the full. The collection will be available from September in the Automobili Lamborghini sales channels and selected retail outlets. lamborghinistore.com/uk/kids

The Enduring Appeal of Winnie-The-Pooh’s Wisdom WORDS: ABI JACKSON
A
s anyone who’s spent time on the internet will know, there are lots of inspirational quotes and affirmations rattling around in cyber space. From carefully crafted memes with illustrated backdrops, to basic Tweets that rack up likes and shares; we can’t get enough of comforting, empowering and heart-warming sayings - but one of the most popular sources might at first seem an unlikely one. Sure, the words of Gandhi and Rumi pop up a lot, along with contemporary wisdom super stars like Brene Brown and Dolly Parton (seriously, a true voice of reason). A very significant proportion though can be credited to none other than a small yellow bear named Pooh.
3 4 A P R / M AY 2 0 2 2
L
ondon-born A.A. Milne had been a prolific writer long before Pooh Bear hit the scene, inspired by his own real-life son Christopher Robin and his stuffed toy bear (originally called Edward). But once the first Winnie-the-Pooh collection was published in 1926, its success defined Milne’s name as one of the most popular children’s authors of all time - and our love for Pooh, Piglet and co has well and truly endured. Nearly a century on, the original tales have been translated into more than 50 languages and never gone out of print: Pooh and Christopher Robin’s adventures in Hundred Acre Wood are still a solid bedtime story choice. But it’s not just kids keeping the honey-loving bear alive. It’s us grown-ups, who still find deep comfort in Pooh and his pals’ sweet philosophies. Harriet Collins, 35, a teacher from Dorset - and also my sister! - is one of the biggest Pooh Bear fans I know (unsurprisingly, we shared the same childhood bookshelves). Although her own words are endlessly buoying, in many low moments she’s propped me up with a perfectly-timed Winnie-thePooh quote. One of her favourites - ‘Always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think’ (Christopher Robin to Pooh) - hangs on a wall in a print, a gift from a friend during a challenging fertility journey. And while those words helped her weather the storms, she chose another snippet (this time a quote of Pooh’s) to mark the next chapter.
“’Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart,’ was the opening line to my Christening speech, celebrating my beautiful, tiny, miracle twin babies being born. I was just bursting with pride,” Collins explains. The ‘braver than you believe’ quote, she adds, “has become my mantra in all things, and again something I want for my girls. “I can remember my dad reading Winne-the-Pooh to me as a child, I remember the book itself, the voices he’d make to dramatise the characters, and how the stories have stayed with me into adulthood.” Shereen Low, 40, a journalist from London, incorporated a beloved Pooh extract into her wedding speech - ‘If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you’ - and a quick look at Etsy and Pinterest is all it takes to see Pooh quotes star for all occasions. Pooh calls himself a ‘bear of very little brain’, but as his fans know dearly, he is incredibly wise and has a lot to teach us. He knows friendship is more important than status and possessions (‘A friend is one of the nicest things you can have and one of the best things you can be’), and his stories embodied the value of simple joys, gratitude and mindfulness long before they became ‘trends’ (‘Don’t underestimate the value of doing nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering’). One of my favourite things about Pooh and co is that they have their priorities right (“It’s more fun to talk to someone who doesn’t use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like, ‘What about lunch?’”), and how they deal so simply and beautifully with each other’s off days and moments of doubt and worry. No judging, no over-thinking, no attempting to fix and solve everything. Well, apart from with a stroll, a nap and a bit of honey perhaps. ‘I don’t feel very much like Pooh today,’ said Pooh. ‘There, there,’ said Piglet. ‘I’ll bring you tea and honey until you do.’

Ferrari Testa Rossa Junior is a 75% scale recreation of a renowned classic, the 1957 250 Testa Rossa Pontoon Fender, one of the most iconic and successful cars in Ferrari and motorsport history. Ferrari has led every aspect of the project, in collaboration with The Little Car Company, a firm specialising in the production of junior cars. Developed and built from the original drawings kept in Ferrari Classiche, this is a beautifully scaled tribute with just 299 cars being built worldwide. Designed to share the joy of driving across generations and a true collector’s item to be cherished. As an official Ferrari product, only

components of the highest quality have been used, with each car being impeccably hand-built. The Ferrari Testa Rossa Junior is designed to be driven by anyone over 14 years of age.
DESIGN Attention to detail is exquisite: the bodywork is constructed from hand-beaten aluminium, the same process that was employed in historical models. The paint is the same as that applied to Ferrari’s present road car range, as is the insignia on the front. The junior car retains the same steering and suspension geometry, giving it authentic handling to match its original appearance. The steering wheel is made by Nardi, the same specialist company that supplied the 1957 model, and features Ferrari’s smallest-ever quickrelease system to facilitate driver entry. The same meticulous detail is found in the interior with Ferrari’s Styling Centre designing a single seat that accommodates an adult and a teen, faithfully incorporating the piping motif of the original and using the same high quality leather upholstery found in the Ferrari range today. The classic dials have been remastered and repurposed for their new role in an electric car but retain the original design and fonts. The oil and water gauges now monitor the battery and motor temperatures, while the fuel gauge is now the battery gauge and the tachometer has become a speedometer. There is even a power gauge which also shows the level of regenerative braking being deployed.
PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY
“The classic dials have been remastered and repurposed for their new role in an electric car but retain the original design and fonts”
The three batteries powering the electric engine are positioned at the front of the car, and p rovide approximately 90 km range, depending on driving style. The Comfort mode (4 kW / 45 km/h), Sport and Race modes become progressively sportier, with instantly responsive acceleration and increased maximum speeds. Safety has been a priority throughout the car’s development: the metal side panels were reinforced and an optional roll-bar can be anchored to the chassis. Brembo disc brakes replace the original drum system to maximize braking performance, and these are complemented by a hydraulic handbrake. €93,000 (excluding shipping and taxes) Build slots are secured by placing a fully refundable deposit of €18,600 The Ferrari Testa Rossa J offers a wide range of personalisation and colour combinations, all authentically in keeping with Ferrari style. FLOWER ESSENCES FOR YOUR CHILD
I
f your child is anxious, clingy, having trouble sleeping or going through a ‘difficult’ patch, it might well be that flower essences might be able to really help. Originally developed in the 1930’s and now going through a renaissance due to the massive increase and awareness of mental health issues, flower essences are incredibly effective for children and adults alike. Taken as drops under the tongue - think Rescue Remedy - these liquids contain the vibration of different plants to help shift negative thought and behaviour patterns bringing you back into balance. And because children’s patterns are much less stuck and they are less resistant to change essences are a great first stop when your child is having a hard time. But I have seen, time and time again, the incredible changes they bring in children and adults alike. I love that they are so easy to use and completely safe and, as they contain no material matter, you don’t have to worry when taking them alongside medication or other supplements” Flower Essences primarily work on emotional and behavioural issues and Saskia’s award winning range of combination essences addresses everything from worrying, lack of confidence, anxiety, low mood, feeling unable to cope, nervousness and everything in between. Her Emotional Relief combination recently won Best Flower Remedy Blend in The Beauty Shortlist Well-being Awards and her Calm and Confident blend is a firm favourite with children who are starting school, are nervous before exams or lacking in confidence. Just a few drops under the tongue (or added to a water bottle) can be taken as and when needed or, for longer standing issues, essences can be used twice daily for several weeks. Saskia is always happy to answer any questions and can make up bespoke blends for you or your child if you can’t find a combination essence that feels quite right. saskiasfloweressences.com

MY LITTLE GEM use cloth nappies part-time or full-time? The additional workload involved caring for your cloth nappies is what puts most parents off to even give them a go. We get it. You are a busy bee and don’t have time for extra laundry. But you’ll be surprised how little extra time it takes to care for your cloth nappies. When you download the Cloth Diaper Ninja app developed by the creators of mylittlegem.ie you will learn everything you need to know about cloth nappies and how you can minimise your additional workload to get valuable family time back. This app will become available for the Apple App Store & on Google Play in early May 2022. mylittlegem.ie

s a parent you naturally want the best for your child. But often convenience gets in the way. Disposable nappies won the hearts of the nations because they save time and you are no longer responsible for them when you throw them away. But the truth is that there is no such thing as “away”. Everything we get rid of will go somewhere else. And with disposables it means ending up in landfills along with 8 million other disposable nappies that are thrown away each day in the UK alone. So while disposables seem the perfect shortterm solution they will come right back at your child(ren) in the long run as it takes over 500 years for each nappy to decompose. At the rate our population is growing this is creating a serious threat to our planet – our one and only home. So how can we stop this from happening? If you switch to reusable cloth nappies you only need to buy between 18-27 nappies vs 6588 disposables per child over a 3 year period. Most modern cloth nappies fit most children from birth-to-potty making it a better investment for your wallet and the future of your child. And if you care well for your cloth nappies they can be passed onto the next child or resold as preloved nappies. But how much time does it actually take if you 5 8 A P R / M AY 2 0 2 2

INSPIRING OUR EARLY YEARS FOR AN UNKNOWN FUTURE
I
t is our belief that if we want the world to change we must begin with the teaching in the very young. This is the moment where our minds are the most open and the most receptive, where we see the world around us without judgement and where we are able to ask questions without fear or embarrassment. Neil Postman wrote ‘Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see’ and it is this exact sentiment that we need to keep in our minds when looking at how we approach every area of our children’s early education. If we give them the skills to question, to problem solve, to recognise and celebrate their differences, to listen to and to respect their different opinions, to understand and value their different emotions and realise that all emotions are equally valid – rather than pushing the emphasis on constant happiness – we will be giving them the skills that will help them to prepare for the future with resilience. teaching these invaluable lessons is not through ‘forced learning’ but through the art of play. This was recognised in ancient times; ‘Do not keep children to their studies by compulsion but by play’ Plato. Children’s play has an imaginative and creative flow which leads to discovery and problem solving. The forced learning of phonics and numbers can kill the joy of literature and numeracy. The use of stories, songs, rhymes, drama all the time, even for daily requests, will enthuse a child with a love of words – and the exciting environment around us with all its rich mathematical content, can stimulate a love of and show the child the necessity of number. It is the children who will mould the future of our world but it is for us to inspire them with the skills to create that future. tadpolesnursery.com

Finance for kids
There are various ways you could get your children off on a good financial footing this year. By Vicky Shaw.
W
ant to give your children’s finances, as well as your own, a bit of a fresh start this year? They may just have got everything they wanted for Christmas – but setting kids off to a good start financially could out-last any festive gifts. “Unlike other presents, these are gifts that are likely to be more enduring and could be worth much more in the future,” says Adrian Lowcock, head of personal investing at Willis Owen. If this is something you’re thinking about and are in a position financially to do, we asked the the investments provider to outline some popular financial gifts for children… 1. Gold and silver coins As an investment, gold is difficult to value as it does not produce anything, nor does it generate an income, but it continues to be in demand by investors in times of crisis. Gold and silver coins provide a combination of a valuable investment, while also giving you something to appreciate and admire. Coins range in age and value, with some more collectable than others. The Royal Mint has also produced coins celebrating well-loved children’s characters, such as Winnie the Pooh and the Snowman. As with any investment, it pays to do your homework about what might be valuable in the long term. 2. Junior Isas A parent or guardian can set up a Junior Isa, but anyone can contribute up to the annual allowance of £9,000 in the current tax year. Money can be 6 4 A P R / M AY 2 0 2 2
saved in cash or invested in stocks and shares. The child can take control of the account when they’re 16, but cannot withdraw the money until they turn 18. 3. Premium Bonds Parents can buy Bonds for their own children, or Bonds can also be bought for someone else’s child. Until the child’s 16th birthday, the parent or guardian named on the application looks after the Bonds, regardless of who bought them. With Premium Bonds, there is no interest earned. Instead, there is a monthly prize draw. Bear in mind that any prizes are down to luck and investors may not win anything. Premium bond provider NS&I is backed by the UK Government. 4. Cash savings accounts Dedicated children’s savings accounts often boast relatively generous interest rates on the high street and online. These accounts hold money in a child’s name and can be a good way to encourage children to save. 5. A Junior Sipp (self-invested personal pension) Parents thinking very long-term may want to consider a Junior Sipp – a type of pension for a child. Bear in mind that the value of investments can go down as well as up, so there are risks involved. From 2028, investments can be accessed when the child turns 57. Given the long-term nature of the Junior Sipp, it could be worth considering investing in funds which offer diversification and do not require constant monitoring.

‘WHY DO BABYGROWS HAVE ALL THESE POPPERS?’
T
his is a question most parents probably ask as they are dressing their newborn in the middle of the night. As a Mummy of two very wriggly little boys I have first hand experience of the struggle to dress them, it’s like wrestling a lion cub trying to get them dressed after bath time. ZIPPYUP’s will make nappy and outfit changes so much quicker and easier. With this in mind I got to work on making ZIPPYUP a brand that gives you not only useful but stylish babygrows. Before promoting myself to the position of Mummy I had a background in textile design and fashion, a passion I didn’t want to be lost in the midsts of motherhood. I have taken the many years of experience and put it to good use by
6 6 A P R / M AY 2 0 2 2
designing a babygrow that works well for both the wearer and the dresser. ZIPPYUP products aren’t just well designed, they are beautiful quality. The collection has now expanded with an organic cotton range in a variety of colours, Winter fleece onesies are great for after swimming or just to keep cosy on strolls in the buggy…and now sleeping bags with legs. I personally source and work with the factories making ZIPPYUPs to get the best possible materials. All ZIPPYUPs have concealed zips so they do not have contact with your baby’s skin and the tab at the neck ensures the zip puller doesn’t catch on any little chins. Sleeves have turn back cuffs so you don’t need separate (often lost or odd) mittens. There is a wide variety of prints and colour combinations including unisex colours such as aqua and pale grey along with traditional whites, pinks, blues and rainbows. I am very excited to have also launched the new ZIPPYUP sleeping bag with legs and detachable arms. Select from 1 Tog and 2.5 Tog thickness, designed to be worn as a baggy fit so it can also be layered with a ZIPPYUP babygrow underneath for extra warmth. The sleeves simply zip on or off depending on your babies needs. Sizes are from 6-12 months up to 24-36 months. New to the ZIPPYUP family this month is a subscription service, you can have a range of babygrows delivered straight to your door every month! Choose how many and what size you want in either girl, boy or neutral colours and we do the rest! At ZIPPYUP we are always developing new designs, prints and colour combinations, I look forward to sharing these with you. zippyup.com

FASTING FOR RAMADAN, AND FOR LIFE Dr Ravleen Sabharwal MBBS BSc MRCP MRCGP DRCOG The London General Practice
scientifically proven to be beneficial for our physical health.
What happens to our body during a fast?
R
amadan is a special time of spirituality, mindfulness and self-reflection. During Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink water from dawn until dusk. Fasting is both a physical and spiritual exercise: one learns to limits appetite for food, one is mindful of regular prayer, there is a sense of self-control over thoughts and actions, and one is reminded of humility and piety. There is also a celebration at the break of the fast which is seen as a blessing. Of late, the western medicine has embraced the concept of ‘intermittent fasting’ as evidence mounts that this age-old spiritual tradition is
7 4 A P R / M AY 2 0 2 2
When we eat, the body digests our meals into nutrients which are absorbed from the gut. The uptake of sugar is controlled by insulin, and so eating triggers a raised insulin level to return our blood sugar to normal levels. A rush of insulin often explains the slump one feels after a heavy meal. This absorbed sugar can be stored in our liver as glycogen. 8 hours into a fast, the body needs to retrieve energy in the form of sugar and the glycogen stores in the liver and broken down to maintain our blood sugar. Some hours after that, glycogen stores in the liver are depleted, and the body start to burn fat to provide a continuous source of energy. This stage is known as ketogenesis, or the metabolic switch. . Meanwhile, another process is occurring within our bodies during this time is called ‘Autophagy’. The word autophagy comes from Greek and translated means “to eat oneself: this is a process of self-cleansing. For Muslims in the UK, Ramadan may result in fasts of up to 19 hours, during which it is likely the stages of ketogenesis and autophagy would have started. However, the benefits of fasting are lost
“There is also a celebration at the break of the fast which is seen as a blessing”
with prolonged fasts so it’s important to be guided by your physician.
The benefits of fasting Scientifically proven better blood sugar, better blood pressure and improved ‘bad’ fats in the blood control Weight loss, and a detox at a cellular level. Boosted mood and mental clarity. Interestingly, fasting is a method of ‘supercharging’ the brain, making it resilient to stress, improving mood, memory and even learning capacity. Anti-ageing properties.
Special considerations during Ramadan How might I feel when I initially start fasting? The first week is tough, but it gets easier from there. There is always a risk that some people develop new symptoms during fasting, such as heartburn, constipation and headaches. Drinking water is not allowed during Ramadan, which means that our natural water reserves will be deplete during a fast and needs to be topped up sufficiently after fast has broken. This is imperative to ensure the fast remains healthy and successful Do I need to fast? Not every Muslim should fast, and there is a list of patients excluded from fasting on medical grounds, from children to those
taking certain medication (including insulin), and women who are pregnant or breast feeding. For patients who are concerned about their health at this time it is recommended that you speak to your Doctor before commencing the fast. In some instances, it may not be advisable to fast, or amendments to your medication schedule may be recommended.
How should one break a fast? To yield the maximum benefits of a fast, it is ideal to ensure that the most nutritious foods are eaten once the fast is broken. Breaking fast with water or milk to drink, and dates to eat, is traditional. A small savoury meal or snack next are preferable to a feast. The Sohour meal time is key, and a meal of complex carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats (avocado) would ensure one feels fuller for longer and more likely to have a successful fast. Ethical Leadership -
creating the leaders the world needs
F
aith Hagerty, Head of More House School in Knightsbridge, explores the importance of facilitating leadership opportunities for young people and preparing them to be the ethical leaders of tomorrow. With the news all around them and Twitter at their fingertips, our young people are regularly exposed to leadership in its many different guises. As they watch world leaders making decisions that affect their futures, they start to form their own opinions of what strong leadership looks like, so we must harness this interest if we are to cultivate the kind of leaders the world really needs. Opportunities in school for leadership experience are vital in offering students the chance to inspire others, make decisions at a strategic level and help to shape their school communities. A number of programmes such as the fantastic National Citizen Service (NCS), the Duke of Edinburgh Award or Mark Evison Award offer opportunities for pupils to develop new skills, set and meet exciting challenges and be of service to others. Lichfield Cathedral School have written their own accredited Ethical Leadership Programme*, now run by many schools across the country. This inclusive qualification suits all learners and is project based, encouraging students to devise and manage their own programme of fundraising or volunteering at Bronze, Silver or Gold Level, suitable for pupils from Key Stage 2

upwards. Aside from externally run programmes, there is much we can do within our schools to encourage leadership within the structures of our organisations, no matter how big or small. At More House, we offer a portfolio of leadership roles that reflect the different areas of school life, but also match our current strategic priorities. Each of our four House Captains oversee a strand of our school development plan: Digital Strategy, Inclusion and Diversity, Academic Life and Community Partnerships. These roles give students exposure to policy review and strategic planning, as well as the opportunity to contribute to decisions being made at a senior level. This gives them something to get their teeth into, as well as a feel for how structural or systemic change comes about within an organisation. Our pupils also lead our More Green sustainability committee, School Council and Faith in Action group, as well as speaking at events and conducting tours with prospective families. As we look to the future, we must ensure that this generation of young people are given as much opportunity as possible to engage in positive leadership, if we are to equip them with the tools they need to be the ethical, versatile and inspirational leaders we hope to see in charge in years to come. *https://www.lichfieldcathedralschool.com/ethical-leadership2/2214945. html#:~:text=Ethical%20Leadership%20Programme,sense%20of%20vision%20 and%20purpose

Herne Hill School shapes futures

esearch published by Durham University in December 2017 established that Reception is the school year with the greatest impact on a child’s education. The paper entitled “The Long-Term Impact of Effective Teaching” concluded that children who benefited from good quality educational provision in Reception went on to achieve better GCSE results in English and maths. The study also acknowledged that, based on other research, high-quality pre-school provision is arguably even more important for a child’s educational development. More broadly, it is widely recognised that the future success of every child is largely determined before he or she turns eight – the age coinciding with the end of the Early Child Education period, which requires a specialist pedagogical approach. Since its foundation in 1976, Herne Hill School has focused exclusively on educating children in precisely this crucial period, providing for them from Kindergarten (2+) to Year 2 (7+). Last year, it opened a new dedicated Kindergarten at the

the statutory requirements of the English EYFS and Key Stage 1 national curriculum”, says Ngaire Telford, who is only the third Headteacher in the school’s history. Herne Hill School benefits from being just the right size for its focused five-year provision. On the one hand, being the largest stand-alone independent school in the country specialising in this age range affords it the scale required to employ a critical mass of expert early years educators and state-of-the-art facilities and resources. On the other hand, it is sufficiently small to enjoy a warm and friendly family community atmosphere in which the children benefit from deep relationships with these loving, caring and expert staff.

educational life – from the conclusion of the EYFS to Key Stage 1, through which the children need to adapt to greater academic demands and increasingly more formal learning required by the National Curriculum. Maintaining their love of learning and engagement through age-appropriate play and by having fun is most crucial. In addition, Herne Hill School also makes a virtue of the children becoming the oldest pupils at the school to develop their sense of social responsibility and leadership skills. All this combines to prepare them to move on to their next schools in Year 3 with a special spark in their eyes and equipped with a comprehensive set of life skills and values. hernehillschool.co.uk

Strong ethos and high-quality staff Asked about what she believes to be the greatest success factors for cutting-edge ECE provision, Mrs Telford spontaneously replies “ethos and staff ”. She explains: “A strong and purposeful ethos can provide an all-encompassing cultural umbrella for everyone’s behaviours at the school. Our own ethos of ‘Love · Care · Excellence’ encapsulates our commitment to excellence and conviction that love and care are prerequisites for optimising a young child’s learning trajectory. But ultimately, having amazing staff is even more important as it is they who develop the supportive relationships required to guide young children, day-in day-out, on their crucial ‘whole child’ development journey.” Following their successful start in the Kindergarten, the Herne Hill School children are gradually introduced to the school’s main site. There, they progress smoothly through one of the most notoriously difficult transitions in a child’s A P R / M AY 2 0 2 2 7 9

QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE’S PRIMARY PROVISION RE-AWARDED PRIMARY QUALITY MARK AWARD
Chapter House, the Early Years, Infants and Junior School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate has been reawarded the prestigious Primary Quality Mark Award for English and Mathematics by the national programme The Quality Mark. This national accreditation is awarded to schools which meet the Quality Mark Standard and lasts for a period of three years, with Chapter House previously being awarded the Quality Mark in 2018.

T
he Quality Mark promotes, supports and celebrates progress and improvements made by a school in English and Mathematics. Without these ‘basic skills’ of good communication, English and mathematical skills, individuals are disadvantaged throughout their lives – as learners, in the workplace and as parents, consumers and citizens and so they form the ‘bedrock’ of good education. To achieve the Award, Chapter House went through a repeat of the assessment process carried out by an external assessor against the 10 ‘Elements’ of the Quality Mark framework. These cover key aspects of the school’s improvement approach, including the identification and analysis of the school’s needs; strategic planning; target setting for improvement; intervention and support for pupils under-achieving or underattaining; provision of quality in both teaching and in resources; staff development; and active engagement with families. Renewal of the Award shows that effective monitoring and evaluation have been in place since the previous Award in 2018. This new Award follows swiftly on from
Chapter House being awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PQSM) Gilt, earned in June 2021. This accolade is given to schools which can demonstrate how established effective science leadership is having a sustained impact on science teaching and learning within a school. Karen Kilkenny, Head of Chapter House, said ‘Thank you to Joanna Young, our Deputy Head, who has worked closely with staff to ensure that we have maintained our excellent standards since first being awarded the Primary Quality Mark in 2018. The award is a reflection of the high standards of teaching and the safe, happy, challenging environment we provide for the Chapter House children. Our children are eager to take risks and reflect on what they have learnt so they can be ready for any challenge they may face in the future.’ To find out more visit qe.org for more information

JOE WICKS’ GINGERBREAD CUPCAKES WITH DATE CARAMEL RECIPE METHOD:
INGREDIENTS: (Makes 6)
T
hese healthy sweet treats are iced with a sticky date topping. “Who doesn’t like gingerbread? I’ve made these a few times for the kids at parties and they always go down very well,” says fitness expert and author Joe Wicks. “The date topping is genius, too. When soaked in hot water, the dates soften and can be blended into a purée, which has a smooth, sticky texture and a caramel-like flavour.”

• 90g wholemeal plain flour • 30g soft dark brown sugar or coconut sugar • 25g ground almonds • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp ground ginger • 1/8 tsp ground clove • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg • Pinch of salt • 90g 0% fat Greek yoghurt • 45ml water • 1 egg • 1.5 tbsp melted coconut oil • 2 tbsp crystallised ginger chunks, to decorate For the date caramel: 100g pitted dates 60ml milk or non-dairy milk 1tsp vanilla extract Good pinch of salt
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan and line a standard muffin tin with six muffin cases. 2. Mix together the flour, sugar, ground almonds, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, spices and salt in a medium bowl. 3. In a separate bowl or jug, combine the yoghurt, water, egg and coconut oil. 4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and stir together until just combined. Divide the mixture between the prepared muffin cases. 5. Bake for 20–25 minutes until lightly browned on top and a toothpick inserted into the centre of a cupcake comes out clean. Set aside to cool. 6. Meanwhile, make the caramel. Place the dates into a small jug and cover with boiling water. Set aside for 15 minutes to soak. 7. Drain the dates and return to the jug, then add the milk, vanilla and salt. Blend until smooth with a hand blender, or in a food processor or free-standing blender. 8. Once you’re ready to serve the cupcakes, frost them with the date caramel and sprinkle on some of the crystallised ginger chunks for decoration.
