While most people are wrapped up warm in front of the fire, the intrepid members of Weybridge Rowing Club are training hard in preparation for the Weybridge Winter Head on Saturday 18th January. At Brooklands Museum, home to Concorde G-BBDG, they are committed to keeping the Concorde dream alive with an exclusive programme of Concorde Champagne Days. Set family hearts a-flutter this winter with this great event that is perfect for people of all ages. Hundreds of exotic butterflies will be released into the tropical zones of the Glasshouse at RHS Garden, Wisley, to create a tropical paradise. Established British artist Chris Gollon is delighted to have been invited to exhibit in the cathedral of his home county of Surrey. Have you considered the ‘outside gym’ that brings a whole new perspective to exercise? Fresh air, more light, more space, a feeling of tranquillity as you engage with nature and the countryside around you, whilst getting fit and making new friends at the same time. Nordic Walking is the fastest growing fitness activity in the world and is not to be shrugged off lightly. It could be time to try something different, new and achievable. Faye Manning

Saturday 18th January

Row amid the winter’s snow…. …or sleet, hail or rain.

W

hile most people are wrapped up warm in front of the fire, the intrepid members of Weybridge Rowing Club are training hard in preparation for the Weybridge Winter Head on Saturday 18th January. This popular rowing race – a 3-kilometre time trial - last year attracted 307 entries, a total of 936 competitors, from clubs all-round the country. Unfortunately the event was cancelled due to the sudden snow storm on the eve of the race and it seems likely that the floods this year may consign it to the same fate this year. Undeterred, the rowers are working as hard as ever, in the gym, on the indoor rowing machines, or pounding round the streets of Weybridge. All this training has certainly paid off for Weybridge, whose crews last year won races in every category from under13 to Masters H (average age 75). The junior section of the club was particularly successful; with the girls winning at under-16 at Henley Women’s Regatta, at the junior England/France match and a silver medal at the National Schools Regatta. The boys also scored some impressive results, being the first Weybridge junior crew to qualify for the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta despite 3 of the crew being aged barely 16, and one of their members, George Stewart, being selected for the GB junior team and winning a bronze medal at the international Coupe de la Jeunesse. Hard work alone is not enough to guarantee success, however.

Weybridge boasts a large and dedicated team of coaches, guided by Head Coach, Mark Calvin. Mark is the only professional – all the others are volunteers, giving up their free time to help develop the club, having obtained British Rowing coaching qualifications. This means that Weybridge is able to “grow its own” oarsmen and women, teaching from absolute beginners and developing them to the point where they can win national competitions. Weybridge also caters for people who want to row at a more leisurely pace. It shares a site with its recreational sister club, Weyfarers, formed just 13 years ago and already at 90 members. Weyfarers runs adult beginners courses and organises day trips and tours to rivers and canals in different parts of the country and abroad, as well as regular day-time and weekend rowing sessions. Weybridge RC’s next event, scheduled for Friday April 25th, is a Weybridge business community regatta, organised in conjunction with NatWest Bank. The event is for 40 local companies to enter teams of 4, who will learn how to row and then race each other, with the winners receiving a day out at Henley Regatta. More details will be available shortly on their website (www.weybridgerowing.org.uk). Almost all the club’s members are local residents and 86% of the junior squad attend local state secondary schools. The club hopes to raise enough money to buy a new boat, helping it to offer rowing to more local residents and to help the junior members compete on an even footing against the best rowing schools in the country.

Farewell to All That

1901 to 1914

Fashions from the Edwardian and pre First World War era exhibited at Chertsey Museum in Surrey.

he exhibition Farewell to All That uses exquisite garments and accessories from the Olive Matthews Collection of dress at Chertsey Museum to explore a fascinating era of fashion history.

The romance of the Edwardian era has not been lost on us. For the wealthy at least, it was a time of great luxury and privilege. But the horrors of the Great War were soon to bring this period to an abrupt end, and such carefree lives of decadence, which after all only truly existed for very few, would soon disappear forever. Despite the air of nostalgia it has garnered over the years, the period immediately preceding the First World War was not the simple, unchanging time we might imagine. This was in fact a highly complex period of history, with many different undercurrents bubbling to the surface. The edifice of an enduring and strictly stratified society was actually starting to crumble long before the guns sounded on the Western Front, and the elaborate and complex fashions of the era reflected the many social and cultural changes which were taking place. Women’s fashions remained essentially ‘Victorian’ in silhouette during the first seven or eight years of the twentieth century. Skirts were long, waists were pulled in tight using corsets and women’s bodies were covered up at all times during the day. cumbersome and overtly feminine. Amongst other treats, Chertsey Museum’s display features a tortuous ‘S-bend’ corset (on loan from Leicester Museums), a stunning cream satin evening gown and softly feminine daywear from this early period. On show too is a pair of diaphanous tea-gowns – remnants from a time when wealthy women were expected to change clothing simply in order to take tea. By 1907 a radical shift was in progress. Designers began to give themselves a much broader palette, drawing inspiration from a cornucopia of exotic sources. A high-waisted, narrow silhouette with a shorter skirt was adopted. Decoration too became bolder and more striking with large embroidered motifs, buttons and tassels. Garments exhibited from this era include a bold and highly decorative theatre coat attributed to seminal designer Paul Poiret, a lavish pink satin evening gown and corsetry that allowed women to achieve the new silhouette which was to dominate fashion right up to the end of the First World War. Underwear, sportswear, daywear, eveningwear and outrageous accessories from a distinguished and cherished era of fashion are all available to explore in this beautifully presented exhibition. The garments are complemented by archive film footage from the period, plus hand made replica costumes which allow visitors to experience first-hand what it feels like to dress as the Edwardians did. The exhibition ‘Farewell to All That’ runs until the 30th August 2014. Entry is FREE and a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated catalogue is available, priced at only £2.00.

Desire offers visitors a choice of around 80 individual jewellers and silversmiths who have been selected for their superb and innovative craftsmanship and have a genuine passion for the work they create. Sara Maitland’s book Stations of the Cross (Bloomsbury, London & New York 2009) was inspired by and features Gollon’s Stations of the Cross. The latest book on the artist’s life and work Chris Gollon: Humanity in Art by art historian Tamsin Pickeral, and endorsed by Bill Bryson OBE, was published in 2010. Chris Gollon was both First Artist in Residence and Fellow of The Institute of Advanced Study (2009), Durham University, and accepted an invitation to return as Artist in Residence at St Mary’s College in 2011. In 2012, The Art of Chris Gollon application for iPads was launched in association with Liquitex, in which the artist reveals his creative and technical secrets. Chris Gollon is currently working on a 60ft (18m) long painting, which is a collaborative work with Grammy nominated Chinese classical musician Yi Yao.

The Butterflies are back

at RHS Garden Wisley, Surrey 18 January – 9 March 2014

et family hearts a-flutter this winter with this great event that is perfect for people of all ages. Hundreds of exotic butterflies will be released into the tropical zones of the Glasshouse to create a tropical paradise this winter. Butterflies such as striking Blue Morphos, Giant Owls and red & black Big Billys will settle among the tropical planting of the spectacular Glasshouse to give visitors a rare opportunity to see butterflies from the tropics in their natural habitat. Visitors will also be able to watch butterflies feeding at special feeding stations, and learn about the life cycle of butterflies in the puparium. Butterflies that haven’t before been seen in the glasshouse will include the The Brown or Scarlet Peacock Butterfly, The Mexican Blue Wing and Yellow Helen – so make sure you get a spotter guide and make a note of the ones you find. If you stay still for long enough one may even land on you! For those coming on the opening weekend children can help create a giant butterfly

A new addition for 2014 will be giant chrysalis sculptures by Oxford artist Jane Wafer, known as the ‘Not-Doings’, which have been inspired by the lives of insects and will be on display in the Glasshouse at Wisley. The fun continues into February Half Term where children can discover the world of the Butterfly; learning about its ‘super skills’ and special senses. Too much time on your hands?

O

nce upon a time a man would own one watch. It would be cared for, maintained and possibly only worn on special occasions rather than every day – especially if the owner worked in manual labour. I say ‘own’ rather than buy because this watch may have been passed down from father to son or bought as a gift for a significant birthday. Ladies often went without a watch altogether and if they wore one, the same rules applied as for men. A COUNTRY EXPERIENCE SO CLOSE TO LONDON

P

etersham Meadows is a bucolic area of southwest London, part of a timeless view protected by Act of Parliament. Richmond Park is also famous for its wildlife; both border one of Richmond’s hitherto best-kept secrets The Dysart Petersham. This haven of great food and drink is located in a beautiful Arts and Crafts building sympathetically restored by its owners, the Taylor family, whose son Barny is the Manager. As well as being a popular venue, cosy in winter, airy and refreshing in warmer months, The Dysart Petersham is rapidly gaining acclaim for the fabulous food being served by its award-winning head chef, Kenneth Culhane. He serves contemporary British food, enhanced by a wealth of diverse influences gained while honing his skills in some of the world’s most famous kitchens. One of fewer than 30 chefs worldwide eligible to use the designation ‘Roux Scholar’, Culhane has been steadily gaining a band of loyal ‘foodie’ fans since his arrival in Petersham a year or so ago. What drew the owners to appoint him was his like-minded interest in, and understanding of, the value of sourcing top quality ingredients from known suppliers. These suppliers include a local forager who produces a steady supply of wild leaves, herbs, seeds and flowers that inspire the chef to draw upon the best from the richness and rhythm of the seasons. Balance and restraint are key – whether in the actual cooking or the support for traditional husbandry and ethical sourcing from animals and plants alike. With an excellent value set menu (£18.50 for two courses, £22.50 for three, lunch Monday-Saturday and dinner Monday-Thursday) The Dysart Petersham is popular with local residents and business people wanting to escape the bustle of Richmond or nearby Kingston. Many guests are choosing the Seasonal Tasting menu (six courses) that, at under £50, represents superb value. For £29.50 diners can augment this with matching wines by the glass (or beer match for £27.50), but there is also an excellent and very interesting wine list starting from £18.50 a bottle or by the 500ml carafe from £12.50. On Thursday to Saturday evenings live ‘understated’ background music is played in the restaurant (on the grand piano, classical guitar or lute) further adding to the atmosphere. There is a secluded alcove in the ground floor restaurant that seats up to 14 – this is also perfect for family or business celebrations over the festive period. There is also a lovely first floor room with its own bar, open fire and panoramic views across Richmond Park – ideal for a drinks party for up to 80 or a sit down meal for up to about 44 guests. Not surprisingly, word is getting around about this very special restaurant and booking is advisable, especially at the weekend.

These walks range from 3 – 15 miles, and walkers can choose from an easy, intermediate or advanced walk depending on their fitness and Nordic Walking technique. Julia will teach you how to Nordic walk over a series of sessions on her beginner courses. She also offers taster sessions to allow you try before you commit. Specialist poles are supplied. These sessions are often held at the magnificent National Trust property Polesden Lacey, Great Bookham on various dates from January through to April this year and hopefully there will be autumn dates too. Gardening on wet soils The last few weeks have brought home to many of us how wet our gardens can get, dramatic pictures on the television have shown not just gardens but whole streets and villages under water. For those of us who were lucky not to be affected in this way, it has highlighted a longer term issue with many of our gardens.

M

ost plants can survive the experience of standing in water, or even submerged for a day or two, but much more than this will severely affect them. Strangely enough, water logging initially results in the same symptoms as drought. The plants pores, which it uses for breathing, shut and as a result, bit by bit the plant shuts down and can start to suffer internal dehydration. In this situation it is common for leaves to brown and drop, but don’t forget that with conifers and many other evergreen plants that these effects although present often only exhibit themselves weeks if not months later, once conditions improve, triggering growth in healthy plants. Longer term, waterlogged plants suffer rotting as fungal diseases take hold. Severely stressed plants are more susceptible to disease, combined with the damp conditions, allowing naturally occurring fungi in the soil and air to flourish, many

otherwise non problematic fungi becoming aggressive in their fight for survival, root rots being the most common. The question in many people’s minds is what they can do to help plants that have been flooded. In most cases the answer is very little as with many things prevention is better than cure and for most flooding situations the prevention lies in the hands of others or nature! When conditions are suitable to allow active growth of plants, the use of Rootgrow to aid recovery is advisable and feeding affected plants, although feeding should not be done at this time of year. For most of us flooding is a rarity and trying to plan for this eventuality would be a costly insurance, although there are things most of us can do to improve the situation, however small.

For those of you carrying out landscaping works or extensions to your property, installing a soakaway is the ideal way to control drainage and this can be connected to French drains covering any affected areas. For the rest of us ensuring the soil surface is not compacted is the easiest and cheapest option. Trying to ensure that surface water is able to soak in quickly is the primary aim, by doing so this reduces the risk of water run off that can lead to flooding. In flower and shrub beds ensuring there is a good proportion of organic material in the soil is important, this helps keep drainage pores in the soil open. The use of mulch across the surface of the soil will also help to stop your hard work being wasted as without it the surface will soon compact with rain. On heavy clay soils, a hidden problem is often what is known as panning. Clay is a bit like a sponge when it gets wet it swells up and when it dries it shrinks, this means that ensuring good drainage is difficult as any pores created by cultivation can disappear once the clay swells, the use of organic matter and sand can help keep these at least partially open. The other thing to be careful of is digging planting holes in clay as you can end up creating a reservoir which holds water unless you ensure at least one side has drainage. On lawns aeration of the soil annually will improve the surface drainage, but with more severe problems the use of French drains below the surface is really the only cure provided the excess water can be easily removed to a soakaway. Areas of grass that are less important to you may be allowed to become waterlogged, this area could be improved longer term by over seeding with grass varieties tolerant to waterlogging. If you have areas of the garden that regularly get waterlogged the other option is to plant varieties that are more tolerant. These

include: Japanese acers, Amelanchier, Betula, crataegus, sorbus and pyrus as trees, as well as Buddleia, Cotoneaster, Escallonia, Forsythia, Hydrangea, Mahonia, pyracantha, Spiraea, Weigela and Viburnum as shrubs. When planning the planting of areas that are prone to waterlogging a point to bear in mind is that ideally you need to establish your new plants when the soil is not waterlogged, as even these will suffer before their root systems have managed to grow.

SUNNINGDALE

Gracious living in beautiful green surroundings

N

oted for its ultra-prime property, ranging from period country houses to bespoke modern mansions, the area also boasts a fine choice of townhouses, cottages and apartments, accommodating a wide range of buyers.The Wentworth Estate is the most exclusive enclave, a prime mixture of glamorous modern homes and original, 1920s ‘Tarrant’ houses that attracts the international wealthy. The Estate’s ‘Main Island’ is the place to live. In addition to the world-class golf courses at Sunningdale and Wentworth, Windsor Great Park and Virginia Water are on the doorstep. The superb sporting facilities also include Ascot racecourse, home of the UK’s most elegant race meetings. Essentially meaning ‘Sunna’s Valley,’ the place name actually derives from Sunninghill Dale. It was one of the outposts of the followers of the Saxon chief, Sunna, whose settlements were centred on Sonning who controlled the entire Windsor Forest district in the fifth century. They carved themselves a little village out of the wilds of Windsor Forest, always a risky area in which to live and even more so to travel through. Chobham Common and Bagshot Heath once stretched over much of Sunningdale. They were well known for bandits and were frequented by highwaymen as late as the early 19th century. The notorious Captain Snow is still commemorated in the name of Snows Ride. The village has always relied on the local transportation routes for its prosperity. From the London to Silchester road of Roman times, later known as the ‘Devil’s Highway,’ to the modern A30. On the southern edge of Sunningdale, there was once a medieval

nunnery known as Bromhall Priory. A daughter house of Chertsey Abbey, it was a rather a poor monastic house founded in the 12th century and dissolved in 1535. The modern church at Sunningdale is somewhat more recent, as the old parish church was always at Old Windsor. It is best known for its monument to Prince Victor of Hohenlohe, a well-known sculptor who, under the name of Count Gleichen, modelled such pieces as Wantage’s statue of King Alfred. He was a German prince who ran away from school in his native land and was sponsored to enter the Royal Navy by Queen Victoria. He eventually became an admiral, before turning to more artistic means of earning a living whilst in retirement. He lived at ‘St. Bruno House’ in Charters Road. A small portion of Northern Sunningdale, on the shores of the Virginia Water, is within the bounds of Windsor Great Park. However, Fort Belvedere and the ruins of Leptis Magna which were erected at follies in the surrounding landscape are actually over the border in Surrey. Sunningdale Park is a Civil Service College. The Georgian-style mansion there is now known as ‘Northcote House’. It is a classical style building of nine bays with attached portico, but was only built in 1930. Agatha Christie lived at ‘Scotswood’ in Sunningdale in the 1920s and then moved to ‘Styles,’ named after her first mystery novels, and it was from here that she herself mysteriously disappeared for eleven days before being discovered at the Harrogate Hydro. Sunningdale Golf Course features in one of her short stories, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford’s ‘The Sunningdale Mystery,’ originally published as part of ‘Partners in Crime’ in 1929. Sunningdale Ladies Golf Club is the oldest Ladies Golf Club in the country. More recently, the actress, Diana Dors, made Sunningdale her home.
