Rising Stars 2014: The touring showcase of the new craft and design talent in the UK

Gracious living in beautiful green surroundings
N
oted for its ultra-prime property, ranging from period country houses to bespoke modern mansions, the area also boasts a fine choice of townhouses, cottages and apartments, accommodating a wide range of buyers.The Wentworth Estate is the most exclusive enclave, a prime mixture of glamorous modern homes and original, 1920s ‘Tarrant’ houses that attracts the international wealthy. The Estate’s ‘Main Island’ is the place to live. In addition to the world-class golf courses at Sunningdale and Wentworth, Windsor Great Park and Virginia Water are on the doorstep. The superb sporting facilities also include Ascot racecourse, home of the UK’s most elegant race meetings. Essentially meaning ‘Sunna’s Valley,’ the place name actually derives from Sunninghill Dale. It was one of the outposts of the followers of the Saxon chief, Sunna, whose settlements were centred on Sonning who controlled the entire Windsor Forest district in the fifth century. They carved themselves a little village out of the wilds of Windsor Forest, always a risky area in which to live and even more so to travel through. Chobham Common and Bagshot Heath once stretched over much of Sunningdale. They were well known for bandits and were frequented by highwaymen as late as the early 19th century. The notorious Captain Snow is still commemorated in the name of Snows Ride. The village has always relied on the local transportation routes for its prosperity. From the London to Silchester road of Roman times, later known as the ‘Devil’s Highway,’ to the modern A30. On the southern edge of Sunningdale, there was once a medieval

nunnery known as Bromhall Priory. A daughter house of Chertsey Abbey, it was a rather a poor monastic house founded in the 12th century and dissolved in 1535. The modern church at Sunningdale is somewhat more recent, as the old parish church was always at Old Windsor. It is best known for its monument to Prince Victor of Hohenlohe, a well-known sculptor who, under the name of Count Gleichen, modelled such pieces as Wantage’s statue of King Alfred. He was a German prince who ran away from school in his native land and was sponsored to enter the Royal Navy by Queen Victoria. He eventually became an admiral, before turning to more artistic means of earning a living whilst in retirement. He lived at ‘St. Bruno House’ in Charters Road. A small portion of Northern Sunningdale, on the shores of the Virginia Water, is within the bounds of Windsor Great Park. However, Fort Belvedere and the ruins of Leptis Magna which were erected at follies in the surrounding landscape are actually over the border in Surrey. Sunningdale Park is a Civil Service College. The Georgian-style mansion there is now known as ‘Northcote House’. It is a classical style building of nine bays with attached portico, but was only built in 1930. Agatha Christie lived at ‘Scotswood’ in Sunningdale in the 1920s and then moved to ‘Styles,’ named after her first mystery novels, and it was from here that she herself mysteriously disappeared for eleven days before being discovered at the Harrogate Hydro. Sunningdale Golf Course features in one of her short stories, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford’s ‘The Sunningdale Mystery,’ originally published as part of ‘Partners in Crime’ in 1929. Sunningdale Ladies Golf Club is the oldest Ladies Golf Club in the country. More recently, the actress, Diana Dors, made Sunningdale her home.

CLASSICAL GAS The evocative world of classic car ownership is fizzing
A
ccording to the Society of Manufacturers and Traders, sales of new cars in the UK show a distinctly rosier picture than has been the case in the recent past, with more than 2.2 million sold during 2013 - a rise of 10% on sales the year before. But more interestingly, amongst those whose passion is more focused on cars of the past, the classic car sector too is booming. There is an adage that says that the interest and value in old houses will always be strong as they are not made any more, and of course the same can be said of historic motor cars. But delve deeper and you discover there’s much that drives the classic car market than pure rarity value… A good barometer, and commentators on the market are classic car auction specialists, who are very much in the front line when it comes to the state of the market and movements within it. It is clear from talking with the wellestablished auction house, Historics at Brooklands, whose Brooklands Museum base in Surrey is surely the most evocative of homes (as the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation) that the world of classic cars is actually driven by a cornucopia of passion, enthusiasm and sheer joy of ownership, beyond just rarity value.
Historics’ Auction Director, Edward BridgerStille, says: “The ownership experience of a classic motorcar has very little in common with that of a new vehicle. “In some respects”, he continued, “the momentum in our market comes from the somewhat antiseptic nature of generic modern-day car design and manufacture. “Functionality, sustainability and efficiency have quashed individuality, pride of ownership and the sheer fun that’s on tap from a classic car. And of course, there is a strong following for retro,” he added.

Historics’ very significant quarterly auctions, where they offer for sale some 125 high quality classic cars consignments, seems to have become almost a spiritual destination for classic car enthusiasts, sellers, owners and collectors. What stands out most is that fact that the cars themselves, and those who are attracted to them, are impossible to label… “People buy classic cars for all sorts of reasons and with different motives”, says Edward. “Our clients include wealthy collectors to whom the car is principally an investment, passionate enthusiasts to whom classic car driving is simply a joy, tinkerers who love the ability to endulge in classic DIY, restoration experts and dealers to whom

what they want, the cars they are interested in and most importantly, how much they are prepared to pay. “Encouragingly”, he adds, “we also have lots of interest from relatively inexperienced and wannabe classic car buyers. They are the future and will help the classic car movement prosper. “Consequently, we welcome giving impartial advice to anyone who is thinking of classic car ownership, so they are able make a measured, sensible decision”. Sensible?....Buying a classic car is not just a rational decision. If it were purely down to common sense, you would buy a new car. But the emotional triggers to ownership of a classic, with exquisitely expressive coachwork, an interior that reeks of old world charm, or an engine that will lift the hearts of even the most jaundiced, adds a refreshing dynamic which, for many, is hard to resist.

The Auction Hall buzzes with anticipation from the many hundreds of people huddled round the cars due for sale, all clutching their auction catalogue and awaiting the call to arms as the auctioneer gets the serious business underway. But what’s fascinating is that it doesn’t have a sombre, straight-laced business feel at all, in fact quite the opposite. The sheer pallyness of people who are bonded by their joy and interest in classic cars gives the auction almost a carnival atmosphere, but where cars and money change hands with a spirit of
trust and bonhomie. Even the business of bidding on a car, when you simply raise your arm aloft to show the auctioneer your pre-assigned ‘paddle number’, seems a relatively relaxing affair. Bearing in mind that Historics market classic cars with values ranging from the equivalent of a weekend in Brighton to many hundreds of thousands of pounds – it’s a fascinating dynamic to be part of. But is it a safe bet to buy a classic car, we asked Edward? “Firstly, people are unlikely to buy a classic car as their only mode of transport,” he says. “And more often than not, they will have done thorough research into

e British have experienced a real food revival during the past 20 years, with numerous Michelin-starred restaurants, incredible meats and fish, and even vineyards producing wines to rival old Europe. One of the greatest food successes is British cheese. Our country now boasts more than 700 types of cheese – greater than France! Unfortunately, most people are only familiar with the cheese found in the supermarket aisle. The real pride of British cheeses is found amongst the smaller, artisan producers. Enter a champion of British cheese: Louisa Mason, founder of Flavour Tastings and Events. Mason’s organisation runs cheese tastings for groups and corporate events, and she is passionate about British cheese. “I love seeing people discover new British cheese,” she says. “The UK produces some exquisite cheeses now, and giving people the opportunity to compare them with other worldly varieties at our tastings is always rewarding.” A perfect example of a lesser-known, yet wonderfully delicious cheese is the Isle of White Blue. Made by a small artisan producer on the Isle of White, this naturally rinded soft blue has won multiple awards internationally since 2007. “Buying the cheese in good condition and storing it correctly is equally important. The best way to store cheese is to wrap it in greaseproof paper, making sure there are no exposed edges,” Mason explains. “Cling film often suffocates the cheese and kills the natural maturation process. Allow your cheese to breath when you keep it, and always take it out at least 30 minutes before you are due to eat,” she adds. Supermarkets are known to keep cheeses in very cold conditions, and they even freeze some of them. This doesn’t allow to cheese to naturally ripen – always buy from a specialist deli or cheese shop if you can. Cheese tasting is a real art in itself. f you could find a school where your son was eternally happy, where the teachers really cared about getting the very best from every single boy, where the facilities were fantastic and the ‘results’ even better, you might think... ‘yes’, right? If you learned that the ethos of this school was not ‘academic success to the exclusion of all else’ but one of ‘inclusive, all-round education, where the learning does not always come from a book, but which still achieved endgame success’, then you’d think ‘definitely yes’. career success
I
n 2013, Ofsted reported on the effectiveness of careers services in schools and concluded that three quarters were not delivering adequate advice, nor were they engaging with external experts. Add to this a swathe of warnings that the quality of careers guidance in schools is “nothing less than appalling”, and “heading towards a cliff edge”, and warning sirens are likely to start sounding. Indeed, the issues around delivering careers guidance are compounded by external factors. Simply, the world we live in is increasingly competitive and many young people and their parents are realising that top academic qualifications aren’t always enough to succeed. Evidence suggests that academic qualifications count for just 50% of a young person’s ability to do a job well. The remaining 50% is made up of that person’s character, focus, persistence, ability to cope with failure, to make connections and to think critically. But in a world where 40% of jobs weren’t even thought of 10 years ago, it can often be difficult to determine which skills are the key to success – especially if specialist support isn’t available. Psychometric profiling is an excellent way to help young people identify and understand their strengths and weaknesses. It can help them better understand their passions and therefore choose further studies and career paths best suited to them as an individual. Top 10 tips to help your kids eat more healthily
I
n modern times we are becoming increasingly aware of the shortcomings of the foods we are feeding our children. Surveys show that children and teenagers are eating higher levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat than government guidelines recommend, and are failing to reach the five-a-day target for fruit and vegetable portions. This means that they are potentially missing out on vital nutrients that contribute to optimum development. So, in practical terms, what can parents do to ensure their children develop healthy eating habits? Here are some tips to follow when considering your children and their nutrition: 1. Eat with your children. Children learn by example — make mealtimes enjoyable: set the table, discuss the day’s events, turn off the TV and put on some music or enjoy the silence. ‘Family’ eating not only promotes home-cooked meals, it also fosters a sense of routine and encourages social interaction — all of which lead to better eating habits later in life. 2. Make food fun! Experiment with new foods and make meals as colourful and as rich in variety as possible. We are naturally ‘turned on’ by diversity — so the more visually stimulating a meal appears, and the more textures it incorporates, the more likely your children will be to tuck in! 3. Include two portions of vegetables in their evening meal, and provide fruit or a fruit-based pudding for dessert. This will help ensure that your children get three out of five servings of their recommended five-a-day at dinnertime 4. Encourage your children to drink water or sugar-free diluting juice between meals. This will help prevent dehydration, which can lead to constipation and poor concentration. 5. If you have a fussy eater in the household, don’t give up hope.

Try serving the same foods in different forms — for example, people who dislike the texture of broccoli often find it more palatable in a sauce or soup. 6. Include lean meat or another protein in every meal. This will help keep your children fuller for longer and will discourage snacking later in the day/evening. Red meat will also provide iron — which is particularly important for girls, who tend to eat less red meat of their own accord, yet whose iron needs increase as they begin menstruation. 7. Serve oily fish twice a week (but no more). These are a rich source of omega oils, which can help keep heart and mind healthy; try salmon, fresh tuna and grilled sardines. If your children find the taste too overwhelming, add seeds to their breakfast cereals for plant versions of these oils. 8. Pack a healthy lunchbox. ‘Disguise’ vegetables in sandwich fillings, vary the fillings, provide plain yogurt and a piece of fruit that’s easy to eat. Children can be very particular about fruit. Aim to give them small apples, bananas and grapes, which are easy to hold, peel and eat. 9. Make sure your children eat breakfast. This will ensure a steady supply of energy to get them through the morning, help maintain attention span and discourage snacking. Fortified breakfast cereals can also be a good source of iron and B vitamins. 10. Minerals to consider .. Two particularly important minerals for school-aged children and teenagers are calcium and iron, which help strengthen teeth and bones and prevent anaemia, poor concentration and lethargy respectively. To ensure that children’s needs are met, include milk and other dairy products, pulses, lean red meat and green leafy vegetables frequently in meals. Foods containing Vitamin C — such as orange juice — can also increase iron intake if drunk alongside iron-rich foods.

Pleasingly, these were the same aspects which the recent ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) Inspection of the RGS in November 2013 highlighted in their report. Teachers were regarded as having an excellent understanding of pupils’ needs; pupils were regarded as flourishing across the curriculum and extra-curricular activities. Comments from the report included: “The quality of teaching is excellent, showing passion and commitment, extensive subject knowledge and a keen desire to meet the needs of all pupils”; “Pupils overwhelmingly enjoy being at the school. They feel well supported by their teachers and tutors and express

In a single-sex environment boys can develop and mature at their own pace and can also reverse national trends: art, drama, music, sport are all equally accessible – and perhaps more importantly – are all equally valued and respected. We feel that the boys are able to express and challenge themselves irrespective of their chosen field. aking a property thermally efficient is very much worthwhile. With today’s ever increasing energy bills, it is now more important than ever that UK homeowners replace inefficient windows and doors with more thermally efficient ones. Having said that, to ensure a property gets the full benefit from an investment in double or triple glazing property owners also need to properly insulate the loft and install cavity wall insulation or solid wall insulation, dependent on the type of house and manner of construction. The seemingly never ending increases in the cost of energy, when combined with environmental and sustainability reasons, makes the need to insulate dwellings essential, although there is no getting away from the fact that there is According to the Energy Saving Trust’s website “If you have an EPC which shows that your property is a Band E, F or G you will need to carry out energy efficiency improvements before you apply for the FITs or receive the FIT at the lower rate of for the lifetime of the tariff, currently 20 years.”

These energy efficient improvements may require replacement “A” rated windows and doors, loft insulation, cladding, new boilers, floor insulation, energy saving light bulbs, lagging pipes and cavity wall insulation. Properties of Band E or less (or those not submitting an EPC) will receive the FIT at the lowest rate. Please note that property owners who improve their property’s EPC Band to a D or higher at a later date will still get the lowest rate for the entire 20 years duration of the Feed in Tariff scheme, which is designed to encourage property owners to make their premises more thermally efficient from the outset. For home owners planning on moving rather than improving, there is still the basic requirement of actually being able to sell their particular premises, as houses that still have single glazed windows are not only expensive to heat, but also unattractive to modern day buyers. Shrewd prospective purchasers will demand to reduce the asking price by at least the cost of carrying out replacement double glazing and fitting insulation throughout, along with no doubt a heavy extra discount off the asking price for being the ones “being

made” to carry out this essential work. When it comes to selling up, poorly insulated homes are inevitably shown up by the Energy Performance Certificate that all UK house owners are legally obligated to provide to prospective purchasers. The energy savings over time from fitting replacement double or triple glazing are significant and will eventually pay for the cost of installation. High quality energy rated replacement windows and doors help a property benefit from solar gain, retaining heat whilst massively reducing the amount of energy lost. They do this by not only have thermally broken frames (be they aluminium, composite or UPVC), but also by being properly fitted in the first place and by having a high double glazing specification involving Low emissivity Argon or Krypton filled sealed units with warm edge spacers (which help prevent transference of temperature) and specially coated glass that maximizes solar gain whilst stops the heat escaping. Modern thermally broken “A” rated UPVC triple glazed replacement windows are naturally incredibly thermally efficient, highly secure
and available in some cases in the same slimmer profiles as double glazed UPVC windows, so aesthetically very attractive as well. Alternatively “A” rated aluminium double glazed windows and doors have a slimmer profile, therefore do offer more glass and light, as well as better views and of course more attractive sight lines. Whichever energy rated fenestration product a property owner chooses, fitting replacement “A” rated double glazed windows or triple glazed windows and doors is a real must for any property owner determined to reduce heating bills, improve home security, add value to their home and improve their day to day living environment. Tree Ferns:
T
he Dicksonia Tree fern is often called “Manfern” or “Soft Tree Fern”, because of its strong fibrous trunk made up of thousands of fine roots that are soft to the touch. It is the most readily available tree fern and the easiest to grow. They provide strong, yet soft structure to a garden which few other plants can emulate. Often planted on their own, they can be spectacular planted in groups of varying sized plants, under planted with other ferns to add depth to a planting and additional textures and shapes. When planted this way they are strangely naturalistic in appearance. Dicksonia Antarctica is native to Australia and is found extensively in Victoria and Tasmania. Possibly the hardiest of all tree ferns, it is a survivor, with a determination to flourish even in unfavourable conditions. It is a majestic plant with large fronds which can grow up to 10 feet in length. Although very slow growing, it can reach a height of 20 feet with a substantial girth.

Tree ferns grow under the forest canopy in partially shaded areas and are best suited to a sheltered, moist environment. They like protection from drying winds and midday sun (although if well watered most can tolerate sunny situations). In the wild they are often found thriving in areas where few other plants survive. Ferns are considered to be ‘top feeders’ as the plant growth area occupies approximately 30-60cm below the crown or top of the plant. The remainder of the trunk is made up of the root system and old frond bases. In its natural environment the crown is often found to be full of decaying leaf matter that has fallen from the canopy above. This helps retain moisture, protects the crown in winter from the cold and provides nutrient as the leaf matter decomposes. A large amount of moisture and nutrient exchange is through the crown, so it would be serious neglect not to water and feed ferns from the top. On arrival, your tree fern should be anchored vertically and

thoroughly soaked, remember to water the crown of the plant. At first, water every day until the fronds start to emerge. At this point the use of TREE FERN FEED will give your tree fern the food it needs to produce vigorous growth and will over time ensure the production of large fronds. During the growing season as the fronds start to move, feed weekly into the crown of your tree fern. Also be sure to water regularly during the Spring and Summer to ensure the crown of your tree fern is always kept moist. The tree fern is an evergreen plant, although in the UK, it is likely that in winter frost will ‘burn off’ the existing fronds and potentially damage the following season’s growth. Hence, unless your ferns are in a frost-free environment, protection from frost is advised, in particular avoiding water freezing in the crown. Do not cut off the fronds as unless it is a harsh winter as the fronds will stay green. We would also recommend not cutting the fronds off even if they die and
turn brown as these help to keep the crown of the fern pulled open. We have found that ferns which constantly have their fronds cut off every year tend to get smaller crowns which taper in and produce smaller fronds. It is also important that the tree fern does not dry out especially if the fern is in a pot. If you do need to water in winter make sure it is when the temperature is not likely to go below 1°C. If you have young or very small tree ferns they should be kept in a frost free environment just to be safe. When the last frost is gone and before the fronds start to unfurl remove your winter protection to avoid hindering the growth of new fronds. oing on holiday is very exciting but we all know that getting to the airport is often fraught with problems. Finding a car park, waiting and transferring to a bus to take you into the terminal all take time and only add to the anxiety and overall travelling time.
