The excitement and anticipation doesn’t
stop at the main displays as the 32 acre public arena is bursting with a huge variety of interactive attractions containing all you need for a great family day out. Tour of Britain Cycle Race
Surrey will host the penultimate stage of this year’s Tour of Britain when the race sweeps the UK this September
S
urrey County Council can reveal the 96 mile stage will take place on Saturday, September 21, starting in Epsom and finishing in a final climb up Guildford High Street. The rider line up has not yet been announced but previous competitors include former world champion and Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish and Olympic gold medallist and Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins. This year’s Surrey stage is even tougher than 2012 with daunting climbs over the first half of the race before some flat-out sprints in the run up to Guildford. The King of the Mountain climbs and sprint locations will be announced in May. John Furey, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member of Transport and Environment, said: “This will be the second year running Surrey has welcomed the Tour of Britain and once again the bone juddering Guildford High Street will prove a scintillating finish for both riders and spectators. “We proved last year with the Olympic cycle races and the Tour of Britain that Surrey is adept at hosting high profile sporting events. There is a huge appetite for cycling in Surrey and I have no doubt our county will be the highlight of the Tour. Record numbers in the event’s history turned out in Surrey last year, some 225,000.” The Surrey stage of The Tour of Britain 2013 is sponsored by Welmede, Tarmac UK and Foxhills.
10 AUGUST 2013
Hugh Roberts, Chief Executive of The Tour of Britain, added: “As a Surrey based company we are delighted to once again have a home stage, particularly one with such an iconic finish as Guildford. Surrey will once again provide a perfect backdrop for the Tour as it draws towards the conclusion of the 2013 race.” Last year’s Tour of Britain generated almost £7.2 million for Surrey’s economy and was watched by almost one million television viewers on each of the event’s eight days. This year’s race will again be televised. The Tour of Britain 2013 will begin in Scotland on 15 September and end in London seven days later on Sunday, September 22. Further UK-wide details can be found here. The Surrey stage will pass through the towns and villages including Epsom, Leatherhead, East Horsley, Dorking, Holmbury St Mary, Cranleigh, Shere, Send, Woking, Ottershaw, Chobham, Knaphill, Normandy, Elstead, Churt, Farnham and Guildford. The race will be pass through the boroughs and districts of Epsom and Ewell, Mole Valley, Waverley, Guildford, Woking, Runnymede, Surrey Heath. www.gosurrey.info/tour-of-britain

Changing the face of cleaning We chat to Sophie Evans about her latest range of gift cleaning packages and why her bespoke cleaning company ‘Dirty Cows’ is so successful What inspired you to start your own cleaning company and why did you name it Dirty Cows? The poor management, service delivery and public image of the UK cleaning industry have been a huge disappointment to me for over 15 years. From the years I spent nursing and overseeing poorly cleaned hospitals to using domestic cleaning services, from a long line of apathetic cleaning agencies, whose cleaning services ‘when they showed up’ were at worst ‘awful’ or at best ‘very average’. The first two years before I launched Dirty Cows were spent researching the management and delivery of domestic and commercial cleaning services in the UK, Germany and the US and designing a training programme for my cleaning staff. Whilst I knew that my new cleaning company would require a name that stood out from all of the other very obvious, generic ones, I had no plans to brand it with such an informal one, in fact Dirty Cows was just the nick name I used whilst I was waiting for an extremely formal and professional name to make itself known. But after much wrangling and extensive marketing ‘Dirty Cows’ stuck fast and with its trademark black and white and cow-print it has very quickly become a brand synonymous with professional, quality cleaning. How is Dirty Cows different? Firstly, Dirty Cows is not an agency that finds self-employed cleaners work and we do not franchise out our cleaning services. I know the only way to ensure the quality of each and every clean we provide is to employ precisely the right people, who are then comprehensively referenced, police checked, extensively trained and contractually obliged to clean to our trademark high standards. This is hugely important to our high-profile clients where confidentiality is of the upmost importance. In Germany cleaning is a recognised and qualified profession and does not attract the low status stigma that cleaning for a living in the UK does. I want to
change this outlook, along with the common misconception that ‘cleaning is easy’ and ‘anyone can do it’ this is certainly not the case. Cleaning properly is hard physical work and requires very specific characteristics, which all of our employees have in common. In fact fewer than 10% of all applicants are offered employment at Dirty Cows and we would sooner generate a waiting list of clients before we would dilute our employment standards to fulfil demand. We attract and retain an excellent calibre of staff by paying a premium hourly rate of pay, monthly performance related bonuses, quarterly staff rewards and every year we host our Staff Awards Ceremony, where our best cleaner wins £3,000 and the much coveted title of ‘Cleaner of the Year.’ We have Quality Managers that carry out regular and random spot checks and continuous assessments on the quality of our cleaning services. Tell us about your Gift Cleaning Packages? Dirty Cows is the pioneer of the ‘gift cleaning package’, we now have over 20 different cleaning packages for a range of occasions, from treating a pregnant friend to our ‘Nesting Clean’ or new parents to our very popular ‘New Baby Clean’, which provides a cleaner for 3 hrs a week for 6 weeks following the birth of a baby, or treating a cleaning compulsive friend to our ‘Fussy Cow Clean’ There are many to choose from and all can be viewed on our website. All our gift cleaning packages have their own specific gift certificates and are delivered in
our trademark black and white cow-print gift box, with gift card for your personal message and lined with scented tissue paper and hand tied with ribbon. Each one of our packages include: A personal cleaning consultation where your bespoke cleaning schedule will be designed, specified number of hours of careful and attentive cleaning carried out by our professional package cleaning teams, all cleaning products and equipment, (including options for an eco-friendly clean) and we finish off every clean with our seasonal Jo Malone or The White Company Living Colognes and a beautiful hand tied bouquet of flowers. Our clients love them. What’s next for Dirty Cows? 2013 is our busiest year yet and by popular demand we have expanded and our housekeeping services for our clients seeking daily assistance and have welcomed a recruitment specialist team into our fold to hone in and seek out the finest calibre employees. www.dirtycows.uk.com info@dirtycows.uk.com 08432902190 AUGUST 2013 13

chosen for their scent, strong colours and repeat flowering. As the deep aroma of the roses naturally rises, visitors can enjoy the perfume at its best, together with wonderful garden views, from a rising walk way. Visitors to the Rose Garden can also see the standing stone made by distinguished sculptor Martin Cook, one of the country’s leading stone carvers and letter designers, which was erected in September 2012. The sculpture, made from Welsh slate, carries the verse ‘How hot the scent is of the summer rose’ from the Robert Graves poem ‘The Cool Web’. The Herbaceous Borders will be looking

spectacular in August and September. Measuring over 100 m long and 11 m deep, the Borders form the heart of the Summer Gardens. Innovative new planting over recent years based on the idea of creating flowing ribbons of intense primary colours from yellow through orange to red and purple, has given the traditional concept of border design a modern twist. New for The Savill Garden in 2013, visitors can enjoy over two hundred recently replanted hydrangea cultivars as they peak in Summer Wood during August, representing one of the most diverse collections in the country. The plantings of Hydrangea paniculata are especially striking and include the stunning new cultivar ‘Savill Lace’. Throughout September and October, visitors will be able to explore and enjoy a display of imaginative and innovative sculpture, forming an exciting trail which leads around The Savill Garden. The sculptures are inspired by the natural world. All pieces are available to purchase and standard Savill Garden entry fees apply. After exploring the Garden, drop into the stunning multi award winning Savill Building, and enjoy a selection of delicious meals including freshly made sandwiches, deli-style salads and homemade soups. With an extensive gift shop, a comprehensive plant centre including plants grown in the Royal Gardens at Windsor Castle, an Art Gallery and Coffee Bar there really is something for everybody.

he Surrey Classic Vehicle Club was formed in November 1996 by a group of old vehicle enthusiasts. The main aim of the club is to bring together the owners, families and enthusiasts of all classic vehicles irrespective of type or age. This is done by arranging car shows as well as social events. In addition to production cars, the club caters for the owners and enthusiasts of kit cars, replicas and specials, and motorcycles. The management of the club is performed by an unpaid committee of enthusiastic members

who stand for election at the clubs’ Annual General Meeting. As well as car shows, the club organises various events and social gatherings throughout the year suitable for all the family - some of these being days out (London Christmas lights by Routemaster bus), treasure hunts, and ten-pin bowling with fish supper. And whilst the club encourages members to participate in most of the clubs’ activities, it also recognises that members will attend their own one make car shows throughout the season.
The Surrey Classic Vehicle Club gives older car owners another outlet for the use of their vehicles by organising events in and around the Surrey area with like minded enthusiasts. As the club caters for all marques, there is a diverse collection of vehicles on offer and with this diversity brings high camerarderie. At present the oldest vehicle is a 1929 Austin Swallow.

A Year in Teazle Wood
In February this year we told the story of how a Surrey community saved its local woodland for the sake of ecology and future generations. As the project celebrates its first birthday, we revisited Teazle Wood for an update.
A
way from the roar of the M25 and the bustle of modern life, the flora and fauna of an Ancient Woodland quietly continue the fascinating cycle of life. Teazle Wood in Leatherhead, Surrey, was purchased in summer 2012 by a group of people championing its survival as a vital green space. As soon as the wood was in safe hands, the important work of planning and protecting its future began.
As well as nurturing Teazle Wood for its ecological importance, its potential as an educational and therapeutic resource is a key aspect of the project. Community experts have given guidance, and a start has been made on looking at the archaeology of the wood. Intriguing finds in this first year include the handle of a spoon marked with initials, three Roman ‘curses’ – little lead tablets inscribed with messages – and plenty of Elizabethan horseshoes.
The first year has been largely a year of recording and surveying. To create an effective management plan, it is essential first to fully understand a wood, and to know how it is has been used and what species it is already supporting.
The year has also seen litter picks, photographic workshops, guided walks and lectures, and the unexpected linking of this small English deciduous woodland to the vast and famous Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Lucy spoke at the Natural Connections conference at Brunel University in London, where Jon Day of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority made the incredible offer to link local Surrey children directly to Reef scientists via video conference. Unilever, whose headquarters in Leatherhead backs
Teazle Wood has numerous leading experts aboard, offering their time and advice free of charge. “The various surveys have been eye-opening and inspiring,” explains campaign leader Lucy Quinnell. “From bats and birds to butterflies and lichen, we are starting to grasp the incredible biodiversity of the Teazle Wood site. We have some of the best-known international experts in their fields helping us – we are very lucky.” 20 AUGUST 2013
directly onto Teazle Wood, is helping to set up the technical facility that will enable this wonderful offer to be accepted. “It may seem bizarre, linking our little site with one of the giants of the natural world”, says Lucy, “but all sites relate to each other, and looking after and monitoring every piece of the picture is vital if globally we are to make any impact. 20% of North Leatherhead’s children live below the poverty line – imagine the excitement we all feel about this chance to enrich local lives with such interest and colour.” Fund-raising activity has also brought people together. Some of the money needed to buy the woodland was borrowed, and funds are still being raised to pay back those who lent money over and above their donations. Tea parties, open gardens, sponsored runs and swims, choral performances, plant sales, fees from lectures and workshops, art exhibitions – all have helped to raise awareness and income.
The ‘Save Teazle Wood’ campaign is still fundraising to finish paying for the acquisition of the wood. To get involved, contact Lucy: Telephone 01372 386453 E-mail lucyquinnell@aol.com Facebook: Friends of Teazle Wood www.teazlewood.org.uk

Bringing Back Brooches
W
hen you think of brooches, what immediately springs to mind? Maybe it is something pinned to a lapel, both jacket and jewel a little old fashioned, or the realisation that you never see the Queen without one. For some reason brooches occupy a very traditional place within the jewellery family, rather like a rather severe aunt. It doesn’t have to be this way. A quick trip over to Paris will reveal a whole new range of possibilities for that beautiful but boring brooch. Maybe it is their joie de vivre or the inspiration of the jewellery ‘Grande Maisons’ at the city’s heart but an observant eye will quickly see that Parisians really do enjoy their jewellery and whether worth the earth, or fabulous paste, it is worn with flair and creativity. The trick is not to see these jewels as over-sized lapel pins, but as self-adhesive go-anywhere pieces of glamour. Only the form of the brooch itself should dictate its most advantageous position. Symmetrical pieces tend to work best on the centre line, but this could be at the top of a blouse or shirt, on the waistband of trousers or skirts as an elaborate buckle or an accent at the point of a V on a dress – either at the front or back. Of course the moment a rule is suggested, the thing to do is to break it. Symmetrical brooches can
be used as a variation on a bow and so could be used in similar positions such as a on a hat band, or in the hair. I have even seen them worn on the hip of a pair of jeans. Asymmetrical brooches can be worn almost anywhere. If pinning the brooch to a piece of clothing seems tame, run a chain through the pin and you have a necklace. Attach it to a length of ribbon and you have a fabulous choker, or a shorter ribbon could be a bracelet. The only limit is your imagination. Worn on a scarf, a brooch can be a decoration for the neck but a particularly French habit seems to be to tie the scarf to a suitably gorgeous handbag, or even pin directly to the bag if you dare. If your brooch has sufficiently curved pins you could even thread them through a thin finger ring to create a show stopping party piece. A note of caution: the value of a brooch may advise a limit to its position and the situation it is worn in. A strong gust of wind might lead to a family heirloom, attached to a hat, sailing off down the river so temper your creativity with common sense. Check the pins carefully and make sure that any safety clasps are working correctly. If you are wearing a brooch with precious gems, inspect the settings to ensure that there are no loose stones. To avoid pain and injury, test where the brooch will sit so that a movement or gesture later does not lead to a serious stab wound. With a little resourcefulness, a brooch can be the most versatile piece of jewellery so dig out yours and start wearing them, and if you don’t have one, visit the Fellows website for an ever-changing selection. Since then these skin treatments have been used worldwide and have been regarded as the gold standard for the truly effective treatment of ageing and photodamaged skin. Building on more than 30 years of experience, in 2007 Dr. Obagi launched ZO Skin Health Inc. and went on to develop a range of exciting new skin treatments and protocols.
C
ut out the buzzwords, bogus claims and miracle ingredients . The Cosmetic Doctors Company is passionate about skin and has a very different approach to skincare. Using ZO Skin Health -scientific products offering rapid results Doctor Peter Forrester will formulate a unique skincare regime for you, tailor made to your skin type and lifestyle. • Following a face to face skin-care consultation, a bespoke ZO Medical skincare program will be dispensed containing prescription-only products. • Throughout the program there will be progressive improvement but the final results will take 18-24 weeks. • The program will demonstrate results that are impossible to achieve with over-thecounter products. • At the end of the course, skin health and appearance will have improved to such a degree that many women will be able to stop wearing makeup or heavy foundation.
Dr. Zein Obagi’s philosophy of truly healthy skin is that there is a difference between mere skin care and true skin health. According to Dr. Obagi, healthy skin is smooth, strong, firm, even-toned, hydrated and problem free. He goes on to say “my mission is to keep your skin healthy, youthful and vibrant, fulfilling my definition of skin health”. ZO Skin Health Inc. has released two complimentary ranges of products, ZO Medical and ZO Skin Health. ZO Medical is a range of doctor-dispensed and prescription skin products designed to address sun-damage, ageing, abnormal pigmentation and acne. A typical program of ZO Medical skincare can last 18-20 weeks but the final results can be dramatic and long lasting. Over-the-counter skincare products cannot achieve these results.
ZO Skin Health products are: 1. Bridal Wreaths of Summer With the heat of summer already starting to wane it is not uncommon for people to start thinking about how they can improve their gardens.
A
t this time of year it is difficult to find interesting flowering shrubs. Look around the gardens in your neighbourhood and you will soon come to the conclusion that the colour being provided comes primarily from bedding plants, which will soon be on the decline, and herbaceous plants. There is nothing wrong with the colour from herbaceous plants, far from it, however they have their limitations. There are few herbaceous plants which provide height unless they are in protected positions. If you are looking for serious gap fillers that provide height and flower during the summer 70 AUGUST 2013
and autumn, you need not despair. One such family of summer flowering shrubs, which can be every much as colourful as the smaller plants, are the hydrangeas. All the common ones are deciduous but hardy. These plants are highly prized in many gardens for their prolonged display of flowers. Most people who think of hydrangeas think of the macrophyllas, more commonly known as the mophead (hortensias) and the lacecap hydrangeas, in shades of pink, blue or an uneasy mix of the two and white. Mophead hydrangeas are the most common, with
their large and rounded heads, lacecaps being slightly less common, with their flat or slightly domed flowers. Lacecaps are generally more delicate looking with their flower heads being composed of a mix of small flowers made up of sterile large petals and more central fertile flowers with small or non- existent petals. Hydrangeas are easy to grow and look after, provided there is ample moisture at the roots and the gardener of the house does not get carried away with the pruning! Hydrangeas grow well in a sunny position or light shade. Soils rich in organic matter will help retain moisture for the plant. Pruning is better if done sparingly, with selective hard pruning of old stems in spring.
H OUSE & GA R DEN
Flower colour in the macrophyllas has evolved into a bit of mystery for many people. The same plants are able to produce either pink or blue shades, responding to the soil type. In neutral or alkaline soils flowers are pink or red, whereas in acid soils, up to a pH of approximately 5.5, the same plants have flowers that are blue or purple. In some soils where the pH is mixed possibly due to fertiliser application or the presence of lime the flowers can produce a strange mix of blue and pink in the same flowers, but this is rarely pleasing. So it is that plant buyers can buy a hydrangea of one colour that after one or two seasons flowers a different colour. White varieties do not change colour like this. However you need to bear in mind that under stress some white flowers can blush pink and when they are dying the
flowers often develop deeper shades of pink, in their last throws of life. This blushing, is attractive, in its own right and is common not just to hydrangeas but many other white flowers; the white we see hides pink pigments within the petals. My own favourites are the white ‘bridal wreath’ specie hydrangeas, of which
many gardeners do not even know exist! These include: the rounded flowering Hydrangea arborescens, which includes grandiflora and ‘Annabelle’, the cone shaped flowering Hydrangea paniculata and the slightly less showy Hydrangea quercifolia, which makes up for it’s more restrained flowering by adding secondary interest with it’s large oak shaped leaves. Why not seek out your favourite hydrangea today! A selection of these products are available from: www.plantsforall.co.uk AUGUST 2013 71

‘Reface Not Replace’ Experts Move Out Of The Kitchen
Granite Transformations announces a new website, corporate brochure and additional services which broadens its refurbishment options to include bathrooms, utility areas and outdoor living areas.
K
itchen cabinet refacing, where the original units are upgraded with brand new worktop overlays, replacement doors and drawer fronts, is booming in the United States and this money-saving interior design trend has caught on strongly here too. So much so that kitchen makeover experts Granite Transformations, who pioneered the ‘reface not replace’ trend in this country, are broadening out their refurbishment options to include bathroom remodelling, utility rooms, garden buildings, outside living areas and patio barbecues. This expanded makeover portfolio, as well as exciting new products like mosaic splashbacks and hard flooring, are covered in their new range brochure, available by ringing 0800 044 5393 or downloading from their brand new, informative website at www. granitetransformations.co.uk Despite the name, Granite Transformations are not just about transforming kitchens with their luxurious granite-based work surfaces. Their top-selling worktop is actually recycled glass, made from the used beer, wine and mineral water bottles that we discard, and they recycle. There are woodgrain and acrylic-faced replacement doors too, in a host of fashionable styles and colours. Whilst in the pipeline are earth-toned decorative surfaces produced from porcelain, one of the hardest substances on Earth, again made from recycled content, this time factory-fresh rejects rather than used sinks and bathtubs. Part of the Trend Group, the Italian-based international tilemaker

known for its designer mosaics and handsome hard agglomerate flooring, Granite Transformations continually tap into their parent company’s product catalogue for further design inspiration. This includes their inimitable ‘mosaics on a mattress’ collection, for fitting over kitchen and bathroom tiles as splashbacks or shower liners, and elegant click-together flooring planks in quartz, granite and recycled glass finishes, for laying in kitchens and bathrooms. Nor is a wide choice of refacing materials, now extending to over 80 work surfaces, door and mosaic colours, the whole story. Through their growing network of showrooms and associated workshops, Granite Transformations’ tailormake all their makeover materials off-site, then have them professionally installed by their factory-trained fitters, avoiding the mess, hassle and builder’s waste associated with new fitted units, and completing most projects in a day or so. With a slick makeover, homeowners can also look to save up to 50 per cent over new fitted kitchen and bathroom installations, justifying the growing trend to ‘reface not replace’. Road Test: Range Rover Sport The latest set of wheels are taken for a spin. This month: Range Rover Sport. By Iain Dooley
F
or a company famous for producing utility 4x4s with a hint of ‘old money’ luxury, Land Rover’s move into the lifestyle end of the market - with the Evoque - has been nothing short of a lifealtering experience for the British brand. You name it, it’s skyrocketed: production numbers, brand awareness, sales, profits. Granted, the Evoque wasn’t the company’s first foray into the ‘lifestyle’ market, that honour fell to the first generation Range Rover Sport. That said, it shared more than few design cues with the equally chunky-looking Range Rover and Land Rover Discovery. That’s all gone the way of the dinosaur with the arrival of the latest generation Range Rover Sport. Visual similarities to the Evoque, the rock star of the range, are no coincidence, while Land Rover’s continued focus on reducing weight and boosting the level of
80 AUGUST 2013
technology in its cars continues with this more streamlined Sport. Lighter, more economical and offering a more engaging on-road driving experience than the car it replaces, alongside Land Rover’s long established off-road credentials, this new generation Sport also boasts more cabin space plus the option of a familyfriendly third row of seats. One other option worthy of note is the car’s high-low transfer gearbox. Reflecting its onroad and lifestyle bias, it’s not now a feature you can expect to see as standard on the Sport. Land Rover executives are, however, keen to stress that even without it, the Sport’s off-roading potential still easily exceeds the abilities of most drivers and the competition. Still, you can always tick the appropriate box for the full-fat experience if you need it.
And, just like with the latest Range Rover, the Sport adopts its maker’s next-gen Terrain Response system, which includes an auto mode clever enough to sense changes in terrain and change the engine, gearbox and suspension settings accordingly. Manual control remains and, despite the Sport’s streamlined looks and glossy celebrity endorsements, you’re only a few button presses away from being able to confidently scale mountains, wade through rivers or charge through power-sapping sand. The final piece in the Range Rover Sport’s performance jigsaw is the car’s engine line-up. For maximum wow factor there’s a 5.0-litre supercharged petrol motor that’s predictably destined to be most popular in places where petrol is cheap and owners are super-rich. For the rest of us, diesel will be the fuel of choice, with a high power 3.0-litre SDV6 variant
M OTO R I NG
boasting 292 horsepower and a lower power version for entry-level models producing a still useful 258 horsepower. V8 diesel power is also in the pipeline. On the road the high power six-cylinder diesel Sport is only trumped by the supercharged model in the way it sounds; the former is quiet and refined while the petrol experience is dominated by a Nascar exhaust note if that appeals. With an embarrassment of riches in both power and torque departments, the SDV6 Range Rover Sport is the consummate all-rounder. Ample low down torque is complimented by superb throttle sensitivity, making it ideal not just for inching over treacherous obstacles but also inching into supermarket car par spaces. The Sport excels at motorway journeys and spirited A-road sprints. Bodyroll is expertly kept in check and, despite the presence of aesthetically pleasing but large diameter wheels, ride comfort is also top notch. For a car destined to spend much of its time on the road, this should be music to any prospective owner’s ears. And as an owner you’ll also spend most of your time inside the Sport’s plush cabin. Land Rover’s minimalist approach with the latest Range Rover has extended to the Sport, and the lack of fuss and modest button count allows you to better appreciate the swathes of wood, leather and more contemporary trim that tastefully decorate the Sport’s interior. Factor in ample room fore and aft plus sound ergonomics for the driver, and it’s hard to fault an environment with a cabin ambience easily rivalling that of the best conventional luxury saloons. With all the usual safety and comfort equipment you’d expect to see at this price point, plus the Sport’s impressive driving dynamics and the cabin ambience, it’s clear that this second generation car has raised the bar in an already competitive market.
Facts at a glance Model: Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic, from £74,995 on the road. Range Rover Sport range from £51,550 to £81,550. Engine: 3.0-litre diesel unit developing 292bhp. Transmission: 8-speed automatic transmission as standard, driving all four wheels through 4x4 system. Performance: Maximum speed 138mph, 0-62mph 7.2 seconds. Economy: 37.7mpg. CO2 Rating: 199g/km.
