ainshill 18th century landscape garden in Cobham is not only an important heritage site it also has ecologically important habitats. It was first created by the Honourable Charles Hamilton (1704-86) and was one of the first gardens to reflect a trend away from geometric formality to a wilder, naturalistic style which featured woodland, meadows and a serpentine lake. Through careful conservation by the Painshill Park Trust, which was set up to restore the landscape garden in 1981, these areas still remain and are home to a variety of flora and fauna. For example, over 50 plant species can be found in the meadows and recent surveys show an increase in the number of insects and birds at Painshill. Painshill provides rich sustenance for wetlands birds. It is a sheltered spot and a relatively safe environment where many of these birds choose to nest and rear their young. The dense vegetation on the lake, including the banks and islands, provide aquatic food for birds such as the moorhen, coot, tufted duck and mallard. The mute swans and the different species of geese will feed on water plants too and also in the nearby fields in spring and summer. Because of the fish levels the great crested grebe, heron and kingfisher are also frequent sights at Painshill. This food source also attracts occasional visitors; the cormorant can be expected throughout the year and the goosander in early or late winter. In 2011, the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) recognised how important Painshill had become for wetland birds and started carrying out monthly surveys. The purpose of the visits is to gather valuable data on the trends of and fluctuations in numbers of wetlands birds.

Alan Castree who conducts these surveys on a voluntary basis on behalf of the BTO explains; “The BTO, with three other conservation partners, co-ordinates the Wetlands birds survey (WeBS), which is one of the longest running and most comprehensive national surveys. It embraces both coastal and inland waters like the lake at Painshill which is an important stretch of water adjacent to the River Mole.” Painshill is also home to many other birds including finches, woodpeckers, tits, warblers, chats and thrushes. At this time of the year the landscape is alive with bird song, for example you can hear the sweet song of the robin, the musical thrush and blackbird, and the babbling melody of the blackcap. You can learn all about how to identify birds by sight and song at Painshill on Sunday 27th April. An expert guide from the BTO will lead a walk through the landscape garden and teach you how to identify the different species. Don’t forget your binoculars.

The magnificent cavalry horses of the King’s Troop Royal Artillery will be galloping WWW1 gun carriages across the grand arena at Surrey County Show on Stoke Park, Guildford, on May 26.

nd the transformation from Surrey farmhands to Tommies marching off to the trenches will be played out in the display showing the development of farm machinery over the last century. Surrey Infantry Museum, based in Clandon Park, is bringing a special roadshow to Stoke Park with an interactive display and exhibits showing what happened to our local boys when they left their farms and went to war. The museum would like visitors to come along with their family WW1 memorabilia for identification and information.

Surrey County Show is the biggest one-day agricultural show in the country and it gathers an incredible number of beautifully presented farm animals – cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry to Stoke Park. The countryside with its milking parlours and shearing sheds, sheep pens and duck ponds literally comes to town. There is a strong focus on local food, and this year the chefs in the Food Theatre include Ben Piette, Masterchef: The Professionals semi-finalist, who runs the London House restaurant in Old Woking, the Four Gables Cookery School and Fernando Stovell from Stovells Restaurant in Chobham. Billingsgate fish experts will be there too and the Farmer’s Market is already fully booked with loads of food to taste and buy there and in the food halls. Main arena entertainment includes two major chow jumping classes attracting top riders and for adrenalin junkies, the nail-biting double harness pony scurry sponsored by Osborne Refrigerators, in which teams of ponies scorch round the ring at breakneck speed through 8 APRIL 2014

Horse lovers will have a bonanza because in addition to the jumping and racing there are showing classes for hunters, sport horses and mountain and moorland ponies and this year – a new class for retrained racehorses.

It is so important to encourage this branch of horsemanship because every year, hundreds of beautiful young thoroughbreds fail to make it on the track and face a bleak future. Retraining them offers these youngsters a bright new chance in life. The show is a brilliant day out for the whole family (and you can bring your dog for the outing, or for the companion and breed dog shows). Children love having a go milking the artificial cow on the NFU stand and watching the ewes dancing in the sheep show, coming nose to beak with bizarre birds, feeding llamas, climbing into tractor seats and walking through the livestock marquees. Explore quality UK Craft and Design Contemporary Craft & Design Fair, RHS Garden Wisley, Surrey 30 April - 5 May 2014

isit the home & garden event of the year; one of the largest contemporary craft and design fairs around held in the beautiful grounds of RHS Garden Wisley. Craft in Focus is bringing over 160 of Britain’s finest designers and craftspeople to Wisley over the early May bank holiday for its Spring Contemporary Craft and Design Fair. Mainly presented in marquees, the fair features the best of British contemporary crafts. SETTLING EMPLOYMENT DISPUTES E

mployment disputes are inevitable and will often result in the employer seeking to terminate the employment relationship. As an employment lawyer, I advise both employers and employees on their duties and rights in settling employment disputes. For most people, the best way of resolving such disputes is through the use of a Settlement Agreement; an alternative solution that avoids long drawn out litigation and an Employment Tribunal. What is a Settlement Agreement?

limitations, in that, they only apply to claims for unfair dismissal (so claims for discrimination are not covered) and employers need to consider what will happen if an offer is rejected. Other factors to consider with an employment dispute In 2013, further changes were introduced, which must be taken into consideration when negotiating the terms of a Settlement Agreement. There is now a cap on the amount of compensation that can be

A Settlement Agreement is a legally binding contract between an employee and an employer. It means that the employee’s employment comes to an end on an agreed date and, in return, the employee agrees to settle/compromise his/her claims (where compensation upto a maximum of £30,000 can be paid tax free). The Agreement gives the employer certainty that the employee will not bring any future claims against it. However, for the agreement to be binding the employer should have the agreement drafted by a Solicitor (to protect its interests) and the employee must take independent legal advice.

It is too early to tell whether all the above changes will mean a reduction in the number of Tribunal claims being issued. What is clear from the work we see is that there are now more ways than ever to satisfactorily resolve workplace disputes. How can a Settlement Agreement be achieved? Previously, seeking to settle an employment dispute was fraught with risk; however, in 2013 we saw the introduction of “Pre Termination Negotiations” (more information can be found on our website). In brief, Pre Termination Negotiations give employers and employees the ability to have confidential and “off the record” discussions.

Further changes to employment law are expected in April 2014. These include the possibility that an employer who loses at Tribunal, will have to pay a penalty of 50% of the award (subject to a minimum of £100 and a maximum of £5,000). Interestingly, this payment is to be paid to the Secretary of State, not the former employee.

AUTO ITALIA One of the biggest events of the year at Brooklands Museum takes place on Saturday 3rd May as they celebrate the UK’s obsession with all things Italian. This will be the 29th Auto-Italia spring gathering which is hosted at the historic site in Weybridge, Surrey. Every inch of the 32-acre site will be crammed with cars and motorcycles from all eras with one thing in common: Italy. Precious Metal Ferraris will line up on the Campbell Lawn in a stunning display of red and chrome glinting in the sun. Other displays will come from Car Clubs like Fiat, Maserati, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo all eager to show off their polished works of art on wheels. As well as being admired and adored, the cars will get the chance to show their prowess on the twisty circuit as they take on some laps over at neighbouring venue, MercedesBenz World. Meanwhile, back over on the Brooklands site, ascents up the famous test Hill – which was built in 1909 as an addition to the race track for testing acceleration and braking – will be wowing the crowds as these mean machines blast their way up to the top. The Paddock in front of the Edwardian Clubhouse is the central meeting point with the cream of the crop of cars on display. Adjacent to it in the Motoring Village, the grass verges will be home to Lancias and Lamborghinis providing a stark conotrast to the period setting of the tuning sheds and other pre-War buildings. Inside the ERA and Campbell Sheds, the Museum’s astounding collection of pre-War racing cars can be seen spanning decades of speed and glamour at this, the Birthplace of British Motorsport and Aviation. All Torque Among the line-up of special cars being demonstrated at Brooklands for the first time will be a fire breathing monster of a car nicknamed ‘il drago ruggente’ (roaring dragon). Built on a 1924 Delage chassis, ‘il drago’ is powered by a 27-litre Isotta 14 APRIL 2014

Collecting Treasure British artist Joanne Tinker uses as her materials the discarded wrappings of luxurious treats

A

s the rest of us head home after extravagant celebrations where the champagne has flowed and chocolates have been eagerly devoured, Joanne moves in like a magpie to collect the gleaming discarded packaging. Her artistic vision sees splendour and potential in the often beautifully designed and branded scraps we dismiss. Through series of playful experiments, she meticulously transforms colourful foils and cork wires into spectacular and complex artworks, destined for the homes and commercial properties of major contemporary art buyers around the world. Joanne has been a collector for as long as she can remember, filling shoeboxes with beads, buttons, stamps and butterflies. In her studio, she works surrounded by drink cans, sweet papers, foils, corks and bottle tops. She studied at the Jacob Kramer Art & Design College in Leeds, and then graduated in 1992 with a First Class Honours Degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design from the University of Central England. In 2007, Joanne exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition. 2008 saw Joanne’s work featured in a garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, and there she met RHS gold medallist Lucy Quinnell, who owns specialist metal art gallery Fire and Iron in Surrey. For the six years since then, Joanne’s work has been on display at the gallery, keenly collected by 16 APRIL 2014

lovers of quirky original art. These vibrant, inventive pieces have been seen on television, and examples are on permanent display at the Science Museum in London, and at the Museum of Art & Design in New York. In recent months, Joanne exhibited in Miami and Palm Beach, USA, and at two exhibitions in London. Talking to Joanne about her work, she describes a passion for detail and repetition. Most of us have made one lonely goblet out of a chocolate wrapper after a family meal, or a little chair out of champagne cork wire, but then lost interest. Joanne takes this to a whole new level, and clearly enjoys the long hours and painstaking processes involved in recycling such tiny components into brilliantly constructed - and often very large - new creations. “It may sound strange, but I quite like the ‘tediousness’ of what I do – even though I have been known to complain about it! LUXURY LIFE... A taste of the Riviera There is no doubt that the lifestyle of the French Riviera is one to be admired, conjuring up images of beautiful weather, beach life and glamorous locations.

llustrious towns such as Saint Tropez and Cannes regularly top lists of preferred destinations during the spring and summer months, and this is before we take Monaco, the so-called ‘playground of the rich,’ into account. There is an extensive range of reasons why the Cote d’Azur is so desirable for the discerning traveller and it is for this precise reason that we decided to take a couple of days to experience what the region has to offer. One of the first things to note is that a flight over to the French Riviera is speedy and efficient; taking approximately 2 hours from the UK to Nice. he historic Ham Polo Club is once again gearing up for the summer season.
2014 is looking to be a busy year with several new fixtures. This year will not only feature the games against Cowdray Park but also fixtures against the Guards Polo Club in Windsor. Also particularly worth looking out for is the Gaucho International Polo Festival in September and the Pro Alvear challenge with its famously wild after party on 7th June. f you could find a school where your son was eternally happy, where the teachers really cared about getting the very best from every single boy, where the facilities were fantastic and the ‘results’ even better, you might think... ‘yes’, right?

It was, however, some of the more personal elements which were particularly satisfying as the report encapsulated the strong sense of community and camaraderie at the RGS.

Top 10 tips to help your kids eat more healthily

I

n modern times we are becoming increasingly aware of the shortcomings of the foods we are feeding our children. Surveys show that children and teenagers are eating higher levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat than government guidelines recommend, and are failing to reach the five-a-day target for fruit and vegetable portions. This means that they are potentially missing out on vital nutrients that contribute to optimum development. So, in practical terms, what can parents do to ensure their children develop healthy eating habits? Here are some tips to follow when considering your children and their nutrition: 1. Eat with your children. Children learn by example — make mealtimes enjoyable: set the table, discuss the day’s events, turn off the TV and put on some music or enjoy the silence. ‘Family’ eating not only promotes home-cooked meals, it also fosters a sense of routine and encourages social interaction — all of which lead to better eating habits later in life. 2. Make food fun! Experiment with new foods and make meals as colourful and as rich in variety as possible. We are naturally ‘turned on’ by diversity — so the more visually stimulating a meal appears, and the more textures it incorporates, the more likely your children will be to tuck in! 3. Include two portions of vegetables in their evening meal, and provide fruit or a fruit-based pudding for dessert. This will help ensure that your children get three out of five servings of their recommended five-a-day at dinnertime 4. Encourage your children to drink water or sugar-free diluting juice between meals. This will help prevent dehydration, which can lead to constipation and poor concentration. 5. If you have a fussy eater in the household, don’t give up hope.

Try serving the same foods in different forms — for example, people who dislike the texture of broccoli often find it more palatable in a sauce or soup. 6. Include lean meat or another protein in every meal. This will help keep your children fuller for longer and will discourage snacking later in the day/evening. Red meat will also provide iron — which is particularly important for girls, who tend to eat less red meat of their own accord, yet whose iron needs increase as they begin menstruation. 7. Serve oily fish twice a week (but no more). These are a rich source of omega oils, which can help keep heart and mind healthy; try salmon, fresh tuna and grilled sardines. If your children find the taste too overwhelming, add seeds to their breakfast cereals for plant versions of these oils. 8. Pack a healthy lunchbox. ‘Disguise’ vegetables in sandwich fillings, vary the fillings, provide plain yogurt and a piece of fruit that’s easy to eat. Children can be very particular about fruit. Aim to give them small apples, bananas and grapes, which are easy to hold, peel and eat. 9. Make sure your children eat breakfast. This will ensure a steady supply of energy to get them through the morning, help maintain attention span and discourage snacking. Fortified breakfast cereals can also be a good source of iron and B vitamins. 10. Minerals to consider .. Two particularly important minerals for school-aged children and teenagers are calcium and iron, which help strengthen teeth and bones and prevent anaemia, poor concentration and lethargy respectively. To ensure that children’s needs are met, include milk and other dairy products, pulses, lean red meat and green leafy vegetables frequently in meals. Foods containing Vitamin C — such as orange juice — can also increase iron intake if drunk alongside iron-rich foods.

In the 5th century BC, the Greek physician, Hippocrates, devised peels composed of sulphur and other corrosives to make the skin peel to let the ‘vile fluid’ out, and his theories dominated acne therapy for centuries to follow. Today we understand that acne is primarily affected by hormones, particularly male hormones called androgens – they have the effect of stimulating the sebaceous glands which produce sebum. Androgens cause the sebaceous glands to get larger.

y favourite author, an authority on acne Dr James Fulton, explains: Starting earlier in our evolution we had coarse hair all over our bodies and the follicles with their sebaceous glands had plenty to do – oiling and waterproofing those hairs. Over the millions of years hair has disappeared from much of our bodies. The oil glands, however, have not yet caught up with our altered state they keep pumping out their stuff. This is how the human race acquired its unique acne problem. Animals do not develop acne. Dr Fulton goes on to explain: “Acne is a disease, just like any other genetic disease and perhaps there is no other disease so rich in folklore as acne – probably because it is so common and has been around for so long. Even ancient Egypt’s celebrated boy King, Tutankhamen, is said to have had been buried together with vials of his acne medication. Inscriptions on his tomb immortalized his physician’s prescription for treatment – a complicated concoction of herbs, ground up roots, aromatic oils and animal parts. Whilst other societies treated acne disorders with religious rituals, the

Combined with this is the problem known as ‘super retention hyperkeratosis’ which put simply, the cells lining the follicle or pore seem to go into overdrive and produce many cells which ultimately die and are dumped back into the pore and mix with the excess sebum to produce a ‘matter’ which the p.acnes bacteria attacks and then excretes very inflammatory by products resulting in acne lesions.

The War on ‘Blight’

B

uxus, commonly known as Box, hedging and topiary has become extremely popular. Box is one of the easiest plants to train as topiary and is very versatile and relatively inexpensive. Given regular clipping you can keep the plants tightly formed for many years, allowing you to produce perfect formal displays that can be made to look modern or classic. Over the last few years the fungus box blight, Cylindrocladium buxicola, seems to have spread aggressively, in part due to the wet weather experienced. Extremes of weather, in particular dampness, cause the plants stress, which make them more susceptible to fungal attack. Box blight is a disease of box leaves and stems caused by two fungi, Cylindrocladium buxicola and Volutella buxicola, these two fungi are often found together on diseased specimens. Box blight is a disease which largely affects Buxus species in the UK, but can also affect other plants in the Buxaceae family. Both fungi cause leaves to go brown and fall, leading to bare patches. Cylindrocladium buxicola, the more damaging of the two, also infects young stems causing black streaks and dieback. In wet conditions the spore masses of the fungi

may be seen on the undersurfaces of infected leaves, white for C. buxicola and pink for V. buxi If you suffer from box blight there are no fungicides available to amateurs with specific recommendations for use against box blight. However, the fungicides difenoconazole (Westland Plant Rescue Fungus Control), myclobutanil (Bayer Garden Systhane Fungus Fighter and other products), tebuconazole (Bayer Garden Multirose Concentrate 2) and triticonazole (Scotts Fungus Clear Ultra) are labelled for control of other diseases on ornamentals and could therefore be used legally on box (at owner’s risk) to try and control box blight. In general the best you can expect from use of these fungicides is control rather than eradication of the disease, so good husbandry is essential, such as removal of dead plant material and pruning. Good care of your plants will pay rewards in particular do not allow young plants to dry out, check them regularly and water to keep the soil moist, but not wet. Drought symptoms are commonly blamed incorrectly on box blight! Leaf discoloration is another worry for many, however bronzing is

usually caused by stress or lack of food and young shoots turning papery in spring due to frost. Remember to apply a general purpose liquid feed monthly during summer

luminium replacement casement windows can be powder coated in any RAL colour, so offer property owners the opportunity to have all sorts of dual colour effects, such as say a “Mock Tudor” exterior with black outer frames and white sashes (or vice-versa) and internal frames to match the decor of the room. UPVC windows can be sprayed in any RAL colour, but the long term quality of the finish can be questionable, as coloured UPVC is not as durable as powder coated aluminium, and has been known to fade after a period of time. Whilst aluminium is still available in a silver anodised finish, the vast majority of aluminium windows fabricated in the UK today have a high quality, highly durable powder coated finish instead. Also nowadays, aluminium frames usually have a polyamide “thermal break”, preventing the formation of condensation on the internal frames, which sometimes occurred on nonthermally aluminium fenestration products of old.

All side opening vents can have easy clean/fire escape hinges fitted, which is a requirement under England and Wales Building Regulations for all habitable rooms, especially bedrooms. All opening vents have a lockable night vent facility to allow for the flow of air on warm days whilst keeping the property under lock and key. The 24mm wide aluminium double glazed unit is 4mm/16mm/4mm, a combination of low iron outer float or toughened clear or obscure safety glass, a black Swiss V warm edge spacer bar, 90% Argon filled, and an inner soft coat float or toughened glass pane. This glazing specification achieves a centre-pane U Value of 1.2 W/m2K. The combined U-Value of Hazlemere’s “A” rated aluminium double glazed windows 1.64 W/m2K. The bottom line is that aluminium profiles offer slimmer sight lines than UPVC profiles, so consequently there is a greater glass area, which delivers more light, solar gain and affords better aesthetics and external views. Unlike UPVC aluminium does not need steel reinforcing so can deliver larger windows, greater openings and wider conservatory roof spans. Also lower quality UPVC products can be prone to fade, especially if in direct sunlight, whereas powder coated aluminium will not fade, plus expands and contracts far less than UPVC. UPVC windows, doors and conservatories simply cannot offer the range of colour choices as standard that aluminium can, although UPVC as a more mass market product is generally less expensive. Aluminium is a superior material, but does costs slightly more, so as with most consumer decisions - the choice is yours! The clients brief was to create a five bedroom contemporary house, with open plan living and areas of quiet and relaxation. The house was to be a dynamic home and also required level access for ailing family members. It was essential that the design embraced the most recent suitable Eco technologies.

Upon entering the property, there is a large double volume hallway with views through to a water feature and the rear garden beyond. The internal accommodation flows from the central spine of the house, doors are taken full length to the high ceilings, creating a sense of luxury. The house is flooded with natural light, feature windows and flows with luxurious open plan living. A variety of finishes enhance the curved structure of the building to the ground floor accommodation. A strong horizontal aluminium fascia at ground floor level defines the main form of the building.
