IS BITCOIN WORTH THE RISK? Y

ou shouldn’t be investing in Bitcoin if you don’t understand it’ says Grant Buchanan, Financial Planning Partner at Scrutton Bland.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT BITCOIN IS? Bitcoin is a digital currency that was set up in 2009. It exists as a string of computer code rather than a tangible coin or note. It is bought from a Bitcoin crypto-currency exchange (there are many), and is then held in a digital wallet. e bitcoins can then be stored, exchanged or spent in online transactions.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Bitcoin runs on open-source software technology known as blockchain, which enables digital property to be transferred between internet users. ere is no one organisation (such as a bank or hedge fund) behind the transactions, but they are recorded and linked through a kind of public ledger which is updated by any Bitcoin user. is transparency is supposed to ensure that the transfer is safe and secure, although the theft of $534 million of cryptocurrency in Japan earlier this year may suggest otherwise.

WHY HAVE BITCOIN INVESTMENTS DONE SO WELL? Firstly, there are a finite number of Bitcoins which can be supplied. And a limited supply of a product which is perceived as desirable will always generate demand. In 2010 one Bitcoin was worth $0.08, but since then the price has rocketed to a peak of

$19,800 per coin at the end of 2017. Despite comparisons with the Dutch tulip mania of the 1630s, and the dotcom boom and bust in the 1990s, such an upward spiral has created an investment bubble. Crowd mentality coupled with greed and the fear of missing out have generated unprecendented interest.

ANY OTHER FINAL WORDS OF WARNING? Firstly, and I cannot stress this enough, Bitcoin is unregulated. ere are no rules. You could lose everything tomorrow and your financial adviser, bank, Financial Conduct Authority and Her Majesty’s government will all be powerless to help you. Secondly, several countries where Bitcoin appeared to be gaining validity are now backtracking and influential figures such as Warren Buﬀett have urged caution. ”In terms of crypto-currencies generally, I can say with almost certainty that they will come to a bad ending,” he said in a recent television interview. For most people the proven technique of buying into a well-diversified portfolio is a better course of action. e old adage of not putting your eggs in one basket still rings true. Buying into real assets which can be traded on an open market and well traded exchanges will ensure that you own real assets with a true value. Whilst the range of investment options available is larger than ever, you should remember that there are always risks. at is why seeking advice from a chartered financial planner and getting a deeper understanding of what you are buying has never been so important. n

SPRING TIME NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS IN EPPING

ith nature’s glorious annual display of woodland bluebells now over for another year and as spring steadily marches on towards summer, there are many things to look out for when enjoying Epping Forest throughout the marvellous month of May. International Dawn Chorus Day always takes place on the first Sunday of May, so this year it will be celebrated on Sunday 6 May. If you can manage it, it’s an early start to get out into Epping Forest, just before the sunrise (which is at 05:23 on 6 May) to enjoy this wonderful event. It can only be worthwhile and an experience that will perhaps always stay with you. Common birds to look and listen out for in Epping Forest include great tits, blue tits, tree creepers and wrens. You can also see kingfishers and nuthatches, and if you are lucky, some of the birds of prey who call this unique, ancient woodland their home, such as buzzards, kestrels, owls and even red kites, who can be seen circling above the more northern parts of the Forest and the Buﬀer Lands. And of course, enjoying some of the Forest’s many ponds and lakes, you can look for swans, ducks, great crested grebes. Herons can commonly be found patiently fishing at the edge of the water. At this time of year, some of the rarer ground-nesting species such as skylarks can be heard. Wanstead Flats and some of the Buﬀer Lands are very important habitats for these scarce birds. We need to take care to protect the special habitat the skylarks nest in, so for this reason we ask dog walkers to ensure dogs are kept on leads

in these areas (there are signs up in the Wanstead Flats vicinity) and also politely request that people take care to stick to well-worn paths and not to venture oﬀ and disturb the nesting sites. holiday, overseas travel experience or an adventure of a lifetime, should feel as if you’re getting away from the daily grind… Of course, we all want to relax but just some basic planning can help to keep you and your possessions safe. 1. Try and ascertain safe areas around your hotel and other parts which should be avoided. 2. Check on the Foreign and Commonwealth website for travel advice. 3. Check the weather so you don’t waste valuable space in your luggage with inappropriate shoes or clothing. 4. When packing, try to avoid packing all your cash in one place. At your destination, split up your cash and cards and only take out what you would need on a daily basis. 5. Prepare an itinerary with flight/travel information, insurance, hotel details and also take a copy of your passport, notes of credit card numbers and keep in the hotel safe. 6. Always best to avoid taking expensive gadgets and jewellery. 7. If you will be driving, check whether your British licence will be acceptable.

8. Should you need to take medication, best to keep in your hand luggage. Also it may be worth considering if you need a doctor’s note. Keep medication in original containers/boxes which has a note of your name. Remember plenty of sun cream if going to a hot destination. 9. Data Roaming has become more reasonable but consider whether it would be worth having a cheap phone with local SIM card and number. 10. And upon arrival and throughout your holiday - keep in touch with family and friends so they know where you are… ...But don’t post your whereabouts on social media unless somebody is living at your home address. A lot of people post their holiday details on Facebook but could risk inviting an unwanted guest! Insurance companies are clamping down on paying claims if people have confirmed they are abroad and their properties are empty. Upon arrival at your destination, try and go straight to your hotel so you can safely pack your passport, important documentation and money/cards in the hotel safe. If it’s not too late at night, try and familiarise yourself with the local area, etiquette and customs. Most importantly, have a great time ... n

As with all Oak-Tree Schools, the wrap-around care is very popular with parents looking to balance work and children’s school lives. Breakfast Club runs from 7.30am each morning and the Teatime Club runs until 6pm. At Normanhurst the Kindergarten areas were recently redeveloped to create dedicated areas for the younger children. Feedback has been excellent about children continuing their educational journey from Kindergarten up through the school to age 16, as staﬀ and pupils at all levels have outstanding relationships that help with the children’s personal development. Current and prospective parents at Oaklands have been excited about the forthcoming Kindergarten developments. e new flexible sessions in Kindergarten have been appealing to parents of the youngest children and have allowed for more choice. If future problems are to be avoided, the ONP Group need residents to stand collectively to safeguard and facilitate legislation against imminent issues. Currently, Ongar (a medieval town) is a

LOVING MY SHOPPING TROLLEY A

fter a rather long and arduous

day walking around London, the parks and shops, I noticed that as the day drew towards its close, my bags were getting heavier and I felt as if I was carrying bricks! en onto a crowded Central line train, no seat, bags now feeling as if filled with concrete I made a pledge, there and then, that my new best friend was going to be a shopping trolley. So, I may have laughed at them in the past! I may have been known to have a smug grin at those ladies who prefer to push their load rather than carry it… but you should never sneer at anyone else because when you least expect it, you may potentially be joining their club. I wear high shoes, I like designer bags – is a shopping trolley a fashion oxymoron? ere was a great deal of personal conflict before the commitment. Carrying up underground stairs negates its purpose of being a functional aide but when you’ve got a shopping trolley (as I have since discovered) there’s always a willing hero, who will gladly pick up and escort to either top or bottom of the stairs dependent upon your starting point. If you don’t get a seat on the train… somebody will eventually be attacked with an overwhelming sense of guilt that a lady with a shopping trolley is standing and you will be oﬀered a seat. Trollies come in all shapes and sizes. e alleged funky version are 1960s style circles which aren’t really trendy or retro but more

of an attempt at design geared to the blue rinse brigade of yesteryear. Also the four wheelers give it an appearance of Zimmer frame and I’m not mocking it because as I now know and much to my chagrin, yesterday’s laugh could be tomorrow’s practical future, so my trolley has two wheels and a little stand to keep it straight. I opted for a black one and insulated to keep food purchased in the West End, cool and fresh. It zips up so doesn’t have a problem with rain and also seemingly keeps everything clean and untouched inside. No hint of underground grime within the contents of my snug purchases in aforementioned trolley! I therefore have to confess – it took a lot of confidence to admit a shopping trolley was fast becoming an essential, it does nothing to improve one’s sensual appeal and no matter how you try to disguise it – the fact is – it’s a shopping trolley. It denotes a lifetime that hasn’t seen a regular attendance at a gym, relatively weak arms and willingness to embrace a twilight age. BUT I love it. Katie Worth, Director of Atlantis Cruising recently had the exciting opportunity to sail on the launch of the BRAND NEW Symphony of the Seas from Barcelona and would like to share her highlights from a fantastic weekend sampling the food, entertainment & activities onboard. For me personally the things that i loved the most on royaL CaribbeaNS NeW Symphony, outside of the superb food (though you'll see a food theme below) were: 1. opportunity to see hairspray theatre Show - WoW 2. the Wonderland Speciality restaurant is slightly different to those on our other ships offering amazing food but also its very own Mad hatter who truly made the whole experience not just a culinary delight but a really entertaining evening 3. hooked & el Loco Fresh Speciality restaurants, new to the royal brand offering Seafood and Mexican dishes 4. Sugar beach, another new feature to the royal brand offering the most fantastic pick and mix sweets selection you've ever seen plus ice-cream - we certainly tried this out whilst onboard

5. Play Makers, a great sportsbar with 30 tV screens, beverages and great food - had a fab atmosphere each evening 6. Laser tag, lots of guests tried this out and had a blast as the battles commenced 7. the Ultimate Family suite where the kids can slide from bed to breakfast, whilst parents kick back in the privacy of their own mastersuite - we even had a go on the slide. as well as the much loved Ultimate abyss, Zip Wire, robotic bar - quite simply too much for me to mention it all. We would highly recommend this ship for families and couples who like to be busy – there’s something for everyone on board! n

OUR TRIP TO SRI LANKA – AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE Nicola Kerr shares her trip of a lifetime

fter many years taking holidays abroad my husband and I decided to venture further afield. We contacted our friends at Holiday Designers and sought their advice – we wanted a destination with great weather, plenty of history, interesting sights and a good beach and they came up with Sri Lanka, one of their many speciality destinations. Flying direct from Heathrow by Sri Lankan Airlines we arrived in the beautiful sunshine of Colombo. From there we headed to the area known as the Cultural Triangle. We had our own personal car and driver, which I would strongly recommend because he was able to take us to many places we would never have found on our own and gave us the flexibility to choose what we wanted to see. One of the highlights was our visit to the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnewela, home to about 90 elephants where it was amazing to see them close up bathing in the river. Our visit to Dambulla to see the famous painted caves (Dambulla Cave Temple), a UNESCO World Heritage site, housing colossal Buddhas carved in the rock, proved fascinating. We were incredibly lucky to visit the area during a festival and to witness oﬀerings to the Buddhist monks. e colours and ceremony were stunning and will always stick in our minds when we think of Sri Lanka. e next day we found ourselves climbing 660ft to the top of Sigiriya Rock Fortress which gives awe inspiring views across the countryside, a sight not to be missed. We experienced Sri Lankan village life after a journey by bullock & cart and a canoe across a lake. Here a meal was prepared for us and we helped with the rice and other ingredients – it was amazing! Kandy, the last capital of the Sri Lankan Kings, home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic & beautiful Botanical Gardens blew us away and also provided beauty and tranquillity. No visit to Sri Lanka would be complete without a trip to a spice garden. Famed for their Ayurvedic medicine, it was really interesting to learn about the health benefits of herbs and spices. Before heading home we spent 4 blissful days on

"Last month I hosted a free live demo in Wanstead Beauty Clinic, because I want people to see exactly what I do and why they should put themselves in my caring and very capable hands. It was a great success and I feel it really makes a diﬀerence when people can see for themselves, up close, what’s going on. Most people share a fear of needles, even if they give blood regularly, but needles in your face or other parts of your body. It isn’t something they need to worry about - they are simply tools of my trade. We wanted to demonstrate what non-surgical treatments are really like, for example, dermal filler for cheek or lip enhancement. Patients often say to me they have seen in the media, or heard of complications, after some treatments and I really wanted to show the positive results I achieve. Showing patients that these procedures are quick, painless and with instant results was my aim. Our audience was diverse and covered all ages.

Some were interested in lip augmentation, some in wrinkle smoothing treatments, and others just to experience what it would be like. e results with the models were fantastic. ey came with some concerns including nose to mouth lines (nasolabial lines). I was able to explain about their concerns and then treat them while clarifying what I was doing throughout. e event was also streamed on social media and there were many questions from viewers. e patients and audience could clearly see the diﬀerence and improvement straight away and they all commented on the natural appearance of the outcomes. is is something I consider to be one of the most important aspects of my treatments. is worked so well I plan to run another live demo June. I know I work in a highly competitive marketplace, but I don’t know anyone who is oﬀering this type of ‘hands on’ explanation and demonstration. Glue ear is very common in children until the age of 2 to 5. Eighty percent of the kids would have had at least one episode of glue ear by the age of 10. Frequent cold and flu, allergies, passive smoking and some genetic conditions can contribute to your child having glue ear. It can be associated with tonsillitis and blocked nose. If you notice behaviour changes, hearing loss and speech delay, balance problem and your child

Hydrotherapy water temperatures of 33°C to 34°C allows you to benefit from the heat of the water, from relaxing muscles and improving muscle length to reducing pain and muscle spasms. After consulting physiotherapists and her swimming instructor, it was decided that Anna should have a pool of her own in order to continue her therapy and Origin was a natural choice. hoosing the right style of kitchen for you is probably one of the biggest home design decisions you’ll have to make. Most people only change their kitchen every 10 to 15 years so it’s not something you’ll be repeating any time soon, therefore it’s important to get it right and ensure your vision fits with the space and style of your home. One of our latest projects really stands out as we were asked to update a very traditional kitchen to something more contemporary in style. After a friend recommended Urban Myth our client got in touch with us to update the kitchen that came with the house she moved into several years ago. She wanted something more to her taste than the previous owner’s, and more contemporary in style. Our client arranged for a home visit from a member of our design team. When our designer arrived, they were amused to note that the kitchen our client had reluctantly decided to change was one from Urban Myth, ordered over 15 years previously! It was in a traditional style with cabinet doors in Solid Maple and had really stood the test of time. Even though our client was reluctant to let it go, she was very keen to have one of our modern updated designs. And knowing her existing kitchen had lasted so long, she was now even more confident in the quality of our product.

We are extremely proud of the results of this modern transformation. e new kitchen features our Urban Style handleless tall and wall units in Matt Lava Grey matched with Brilliant White gloss base units from the same range. e breakfast bar, which has been integrated into the peninsular kitchen island provides the perfect view of the cooking action. Adding a down draft extractor oﬀers uninterrupted clean lines to enhance the modern aesthetic and create a fantastic entertaining space. Another feature included in this kitchen is the tambour/roller shutter unit. is hidden storage solution is perfect to conceal small appliances and maintain the sleek look of the modern kitchen. A socket can be placed inside the unit so that appliances don’t have to be moved far when in use.
