AN HISTORIC HOUSE WITH A DIFFERENCE: Rainham Hall

R

ainham Hall is a Grade II* listed 18th century Queen Anne-style house built in 1729 by sea merchant John Harle in Rainham Village, in the London Borough of Havering. Considered to be one of the country’s finest surviving examples of an early Georgian merchant’s house, the Hall has been owned by the National Trust since the 1940s and has undergone a £2.5million, two-year programme of conservation and redevelopment. With an innovative visitor experience developed by the National Trust with award-winning architecture practice Studio Weave following a collaboration with the people of Rainham Village, local groups and creative practitioners from across the borough, and students from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London who assisted with early concept development. Visitors can immerse themselves in the lives and times of some of its colourful previous inhabitants through exhibitions, sound and video installations, and events. Everything Harle Left Behind is the first exhibition at Rainham Hall, deconstructing the life of the first resident and founder, John Harle who came from a family of sea-faring merchants in North East England who shipped coal, food and other domestic goods around the Baltic and Mediterranean. Harle designed and built the Hall after buying land that extended to Rainham Creek where he created a Wharf for his shipping and trading business, striking deals in London’s Royal Exchange and coffee houses. Studio Weave has created an atmospheric narrative of Harle’s story that unfolds across three floors at Rainham

Hall. Sound installations recorded by a choir and local school children of the nursery rhymes, sea shanties and songs of the Durham coastline that he grew up with, lead into the perils of life at sea presented as an immersive video projection, and the recreated aromas and tastes of Lloyds Coffee House that Harle would have experienced in the eighteenth century. In the bathroom in an Edwardian bath, lies a diorama of Bay of Honduras complete with a miniature replica of a collier bulk cargo ship similar to one captained by Harle, made by John Miller from Romford Model Engineering Club. Across two rooms is Industry and Idleness, an original print series by Hogarth, which moralises on the contrasting lives of two protagonists who go to sea. Rainham Hall has been home to a richly diverse cast of characters and visitors including an 18th century Methodist preacher; a late nineteenth century cyclingenthusiast vicar-scientist; fine art specialist and art historian Colonel Herbert Hall Mulliner; architect and illustrator couple, Walter and Leonora Ison; and society photographer and former Decoration Editor for Vogue, Anthony Denney, amongst other architects, artists, designers and musicians. alentine’s Day is allegedly the most romantic day of the year. For some couples, every day is Valentine’s Day but for most of us, it’s an annual event. With eager anticipation, most women fantasize about splendid surprises. e preferred small box would imply a very appealing love token; ear-rings, pendant, perhaps even an engagement ring! By contrast and as women are becoming more confident, owners of businesses and also assertive, it is not unusual for a woman to now propose if the man in her life is reticent! Historically, women only had this privilege on leap years but for some, four years is probably three too many if wanting to reduce the timeline to a marital event. Another scenario is the person NOT in a relationship. Statistics confirm a growing trend for people living alone. Oscar Wilde famously stated: “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.” ere is an interpretation that in order to love somebody else – you have to love yourself first. But taken at relatively face value and bearing in mind Oscar’s personality, this is probably a narcissistic statement rather than a romantic journey. However if looking to celebrate Valentine’s Day but are one person short of a couple, why not treat yourself to whatever it is that you would like? Self-gifting is very popular with both men and women!

he Oak-Tree Schools comprise Braeside in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall School in Epping, Normanhurst School in North Chingford, and Oaklands School in Loughton. As well as enjoying an excellent record of academic success, the schools within e Oak-Tree Group are becoming known for providing numerous creative opportunities for their pupils to complement the education and to provide a more rounded education. Braeside is an all-through school for girls from 2½ to 16 where creative arts are taught all the way through school up to GCSE level. Headmistress Gillian Haddon explains, “Fostering an appreciation of creativity is a vital part of a child’s development. In December all of our junior pupils from Kindergarten to Year 6 performed to parents in our annual Winter Festival. e concert included a variety of songs accompanied by our talented instrumentalists. We’re very proud of our senior pupils too as there are many who have recently achieved Merits in Grade 2 and 3 piano and violin”. Kaye Lovejoy, Headmistress of Coopersale Hall School in Epping, says, “Much work has been put into developing our Performing Arts department this year and the children have been taking advantage of the newly refurbished studio. It’s a fantastic in which they can rehearse for the many shows and performances, and there is now a suite of computers to learn the more technical side of music. e junior choir is available for all pupils in Years 3 to 6, and weekly orchestra rehearsals include children who take instrumental tuition as well as those just keen to get involved”. 1 2 F E B RU A RY 2 0 1 6

Normanhurst’s Headmistress Claire Osborn comments, “We are incredibly proud of our Art and DT departments. Our pupils are given so many opportunities throughout the year to use their skills to compete locally and nationally in competitions. Recently some of our pupils’ artwork was showcased at a national ISA Schools competition alongside some of the best artwork submitted from across the country. It was judged by a team of professional artists and I was delighted that Normanhurst pupils won awards in three separate categories - 2D Art, Textiles and Fashion”. Cheryl Macnair, Headmistress of Oaklands School in Loughton, is aware of the importance of music throughout the school; “Music is a big part of school life at Oaklands. It helps the younger children with their counting, ability to listen and concentrate and social skills. e children have several opportunities throughout the year to perform within the local community. e school choir gathered recently at St Mary’s Church on Loughton High Road and I was very proud of the way that our pupils sang so confidently to the large audience, including the Mayor”. Matthew Hagger, Group Principal of the Oak-Tree Schools, explains, “Over the past few years there has been an emphasis on developing the creative side of the syllabus. Art, Music and Drama now play key parts in the pupils’ education both during the normal school day and within our extensive programme of after school and holidays clubs”. n

EDITOR, FAYE MANNING IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, FAYE ASKS MICHELLE ABOUT THE PROCESS AND PLOT…

Faye: ere are many threads to this book, where did you start and what inspired you? Michelle: I went to Prague a few years ago with my daughter and whilst standing in the lobby of an old hotel, I wondered about its history, who might have stayed there and why? A story or novel always starts with ‘What if?’ Faye: Why did you choose Venice as another setting? Michelle: I have visited Venice many times and it is unique; extremely pretty and romantic. Also I felt the contrast between crowded canals as compared to quiet back streets just around the corner, offered perfect opportunities for certain, personal developments. Faye: Tell me a bit more about the main character? Michelle: You have to ensure the reader cares about the characters, especially the protagonist (Portia). She is abandoned as a baby and wants to uncover the secrets of her past; she also wants to be loved. Her journey is interesting, exciting and very glitzy. Faye: e characters each had a distinctive personality and their own voice. I felt as if I knew them. How did you feel about your characters? Michelle: ere were some that I liked and others that I didn’t. In life there is always conflict – the good and the bad. We all develop as a result of where we have been, the people who have come into our lives and how they might impact upon our decisions and opportunities. Faye: e book is very visual. How did you achieve that? Michelle: e words should stimulate the senses so you can respond on a multi-sensory level. If you can feel the words and allow yourself to be immersed in them, the book will feel real and believable. at’s all part of the experience and pleasure. I try to make my writing feel as if you’re watching a film.

Faye: Your novel certainly doesn’t hold back on any level. Michelle: It is important to be honest. Every scene, conversation and setting is absolutely relevant. Nothing is gratuitous and most of us are led by our feelings. e decisions that we make and the paths which we take, are as a result of our experience at that particular time. Do we repeat mistakes or do we learn from them? e novel addresses this point. Faye: I read the book, thoroughly enjoyed and would absolutely recommend. Any advice for an aspiring author looking to write a book? Michelle: A novel should offer an experience which entices, excites and intrigues. n Diamonds and Secrets by Michelle B. alentines Mansion will be re-opening to the public on Valentine’s Day after its winter closure with a special craft fair celebrating all things lovingly created by hand. “Made with Love” will feature carefully selected craft stalls throughout the Grade II* listed country house offering gift and food items. Venture to the top floor for Artist’s Open Studios, where you can meet the Valentines Mansion Studio Artists, see how their work is made and purchase some of their unique creations. Situated in Ilford, Essex, Valentines Mansion is a grade II* listed country house surrounded by picturesque gardens and parkland – the perfect place to spend the most romantic day of the year with your loved ones. Browse the many stalls offering unique hand-made crafts, ranging from jewellery and stationery to edible gifts. A visit to the artists’ studios on the top floor of the Mansion, historically the servant’s quarters, is always a treat for visitors. Jason Rose specialises in contemporary acrylic paintings, with his inspiration lying in his life experiences, combining imagery from loved ones, meaningful places and dream imagery. e themes of spirituality, environmentalism and quantum mechanics along with his bold style make his work take on a striking identity. Sarah Partridge specialises in ceramics, sculpture and mosaics and takes inspiration from forms found in nature, featuring spirals and orbs with smooth and textured surfaces. on permanent display in e Chapel of Canon Palmer catholic School in Seven Kings. You will also find some of her work in our walled gardens. Sadia Ur-Rehman is a multi-media artist. London born of Pakistani parentage, Sadia Ur-Rehman’s multi-media practice is an on-going investigation into the notions of home, belonging and cultural identity in an increasingly ‘globalised’ world. Julian Walker Specialising in installation and performance, Julian has worked with several major museums, has exhibited internationally, has published a number of texts on cultural history, and works as an educator with the British Library, the British Museum, and other institutions. Carley Lencher: An Essex based artist with a passion for the old masters such as Monet, Degas and Paul Cézanne which has helped inspire some of her paintings to date. Carley is currently working on a personal portfolio as well as taking on regular commissions. She specialises in Portraiture, Seascapes and traditional Landscapes and her work has now started to sell internationally. n January 2016, I went on a ten-day trip to India with my father and a group of sixteen other people. is was a spiritual trip for meditation, chanting, yoga, connecting with like-minded people, and offering service to the poor. It was a fantastic trip where I immersed myself in the above, and forgot about life in the Western world for a while. We went to Mumbai, Delhi and Vrindavan (which is where the Food For Life Vrindavan charity is). Along the journey, I saw many poor children on the streets begging, with no warm clothes and often barefoot. is made me realize how special the schools in Vrindavan are, i.e. the charity that we support and are raising the money for. Giving a child education and food are two basic things we take for granted, but so essential for the development and security of children. One particular highlight for me on the last day before we were coming back was when I was with one of the group – a guy called Neil. He wanted to feed some cows and dogs as a service. It was nice to see him do this. Afterwards, about six poor small children roaming the streets suddenly surrounded us. Giving them some money would have been the obvious thing to do. However, we were next to a man making hot milk. Neil decided to order each child a lovely glass of hot milk served in a clay made glass. e gratitude and appreciation from the children was wonderful to see. It was obvious this much-needed drink would keep them going through the cold night. Upon returning to London, one of my other desires was to have a personal tour of Haven House Children’s Hospice, the other charity that we are raising money for. I realised that it was important for me to see the excellent work being done at this local charity myself. I arranged a two-hour meeting and tour with Charlotte and Erica from Haven House, who kindly showed my wife Jyoti, a couple (friends) and myself around. e hospice is amazingly set up with equipment and

technology to help in the difficult task of looking after children with life-limiting conditions. A few of the sections of the hospice that had a special impact on me were: e Holistic Care Centre - home to a range of services designed to ‘wrap-around’ the family. TAKING TIME-OFF IN THEYDON! W ith so many beautiful areas within this magazine’s remit, taking time-out, to venture somewhere a little different and the absolute epitome of the beautiful Essex countryside, is our very own, eydon Bois. As winter fades and spring emerges, whether for a walk, leisurely lunch or meandering stroll, eydon is an enticing alternative to its neighbours Epping or Loughton. A large residential village and civil parish in the Epping Forest district; a short drive from Epping (1.4 miles) and Loughton (less than 1 mile) access is a quick journey that gives enough distance from home but without being too far that it merits much thought or preparation. e drive is very pretty in the summer and a scenic ride in

the winter, especially if the forest and lanes are covered with snow. I know that I always feel tempted to play Mozart when driving through a wintery postcard scene! Apparently the origin of the name is from the family of Bois which owned the manor in the 12th and 13th centuries. As for the correct pronunciation… it’s ‘boys’ –

not the French bois meaning trees. Although ironically given the name because of the village’s close proximity to the forest. eydon Bois is a very practical village and its shops offer all services and facilities needed for local residents. eydon Bois is usually a finalist in the RCCE Best Kept Village awards and is proud to be the winner of Best Kept Essex Village in both 2004 and 2007. A few good local pubs and restaurants offering elegant cuisine are also featured in the village. So whether for a sumptuous meal or just a swift half down the local, everybody’s preference is accommodated. e high street has the familiar Tesco and there are other practicalities such as a bank, post office and pharmacy. For interesting events, the long-standing and highly respected, Loughton Astronomical Society has an interesting timetable and for enthusiasts, a Toy and Train Collectors Fair is scheduled for April.

tarting outside the Armoury (marker post 1) head down to the Bicknacre Road. Turn left onto a sign posted public footpath until reaching the road known as 'e Common'. Cross the road and bear right towards marker post 2. Now continue straight until reaching marker post 3. Marker post 3 marks the boundary between scrub habitats and the main dry acid grass heathland areas, and shows, to the south, the more typical landscape of a traditional open common. Almost immediately on the right is the site of a new pond, currently fenced-off to enable pond life and plants to multiply. Now head slightly to the right to marker post 4. is area was probably once dominated by heathland before being invaded by scrub and birch. Now head slightly right until reaching the bridle path 28, turn left and after a few metres turn right and head south towards marker post 5. Pre 1600 ancient woodland requires little management. e woodland structure is now managed by the National Trust. Now head on and shortly bear slightly to the left to marker post 6. Backwarden Nature Reserve is leased to and manged by Essex Wildlife Trust. Now turn left and head on to re-cross the bridle path 28 and head on up to marker post 7. e woodland in this area, mainly stocked with Hornbeam, is divided into 20 'coupes' (the traditional term for an area of coppice) and each is cut on a 20 year rotation. Now continue ahead following the path to the left after a short way, then turn right and head north to marker post 8. e change in vegetation across this area, from hornbeam, oak and holly on the eastern side to silver birch and heather on the west, indicates the change from clay to sand. Now head on straight and turn right to reach marker post 9. A spring line at approximately 70m above sea level runs right around Danbury Ridge. e largest of note is from Spring Buell some 50m NNE from this point. Now head forward for a few paces towards the boundary and turn left towards marker post 10. Spring Buell/Buell Well provided drinking water for the people of Danbury at one time. Now head on for a little way and cross the bridle path 30. Head on until reaching a footpath on the left. Make a left turn, then a right turn, then a half right turn, and then a left turn following on to cross 'e Common' road again. en turn left with the houses on your left until reaching marker post 11. Livestock would have been allowed to graze here in the early spring but removed at the end of April, for the grass to be grown for 10-12 weeks before being cut for hay. Now make your way back to the car park or across the road to the Cricketers Inn for some refreshment, before continuing to Lingwood Common. If continuing to Lingwood, from the car park head left, cross the Bicnacre Road and turning left down Sporeham's Lane take the first signed footpath on the right. Now continue on the Lingwood trail. Want to own a private island but not sure if you’re ready to commit to homesteading way out in the middle of nowhere? Well, a little island called East Sister Rock Island off the coast of Florida, is just right for you. It is sort of a tester private island. You don’t even have to buy it to try it out; you can rent it.

ou need £7.7 million to buy it. But if you just want to get your feet wet in private island ownership, you can rent the island for £702 a night. East Sister Rock Island is a true private island, so you, and only you, own it in its entirety. But it’s admittedly a very, very small island only a quarter-mile offshore, so you’re not completely isolated from the rest of humanity. The island is surrounded by a coral reef, and there are plenty more worth exploring around the island, the rental listing says. The property also includes a helicopter launch pad and above-ground pool. East Sister Rock Island is a ¼ mile off the Atlantic shore of the city of Marathon. On the private island sits a dream come true getaway home with 5000+ square feet of living area which includes a 2,700 square foot veranda, boat dock (fisherman’s dream), helicopter launch pad and many more surprises. The island is on the Atlantic Ocean breeze and is only a three minute boat ride from the mainland dock and parking. Marathon has numerous shopping centres, fine and casual dining with never a need to dress up. Approximately two hours from Miami and only 45 minutes from Key West, you are right in the heart of the Florida Keys. And if you want to explore the surrounding reefs, they are right off the island. The island itself is built on and surrounded by beautiful coral reefs. Centred on the island 15 Ft. above mean high tide lays the 2500 sq.ft. Bahamian style house with nineteen sliding

glass doors. Surrounding the house is a 2700 sq.ft covered veranda which gives a spectacular 360 degree view providing you with approximately 5000 sq ft of living area. The house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms which will accommodate nine comfortably. Open kitchen and dining area makes for easy living. The entertainment centre has an LCD TV with nearly 100 channels for your entertainment. There is also a regulation sized pool table on the veranda so you can play with the sights and sounds of the ocean all around you. Since the Island is surrounded by coral reef, it makes water sports hard to ignore. Take advantage of snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities from the island itself and/or the charted coral reef just minutes away by boat. For the fisherman, East Sister Rock Island is ideal. Between the island and the mainland; pods of permit and bonefish thrive in the flats. World renowned tarpon fishing at the Seven Mile bridge is only a five minute boat ride to the West. To the South lies the Gulf where the deep sea angler can battle sailfish, dolphin, marlin and wahoo, or simply relax and enjoy the secluded tropical charm of the island. Watch the sun climb out of the ocean in the morning and sink to the most spectacular sunset you have ever seen. The workout alternates between fast-paced and slow-paced dance moves which are practiced in time to Latin rhythms. Among the dance form’s influences are salsa, hip-hop and rumba. This South American workout tones the body through its use of resistance exercises which effectively amount to interval training due to the varying speeds at which they are carried out.

CIRCUIT TRAINING Circuit training involves a number of exercises – or ‘stations’ – which are performed one after the other, with a short rest in between. Exercises vary, but tend to include aerobic exercises such as shuttle runs, star jumps and burpees, along with strength moves such as push-ups, squats and lunges. The nature of a circuit training class means that, rather than raising your heart rate and keeping it high for the duration of the class, it gives you more of an ‘interval training’ effect, where you mix intense bursts of activity with recovery periods. It is a very effective way of improving aerobic fitness. BOXERCISE/KICKBOXERCISE Boxercise and kickboxercise are derivatives of boxing and kickboxing and use the drills and techniques of their respective sports in a noncontact setting, usually in the form of a circuit. For example, you might find yourself shadowboxing, skipping, using punch bags or teaming up with a partner to punch or kick focus pads. Both are considered one of the best all-round high intensity exercise classes to get you in great shape.One study found that people felt more calm, more focused and less anxious after a kickboxing class. Taking out all that aggression on a punch bag can be a great stress reliever!

PILATES Pilates is a form of exercise which works on restoring correct posture and alignment (which are under constant attack from our seated, sedentary lifestyles), strengthening the muscles that stabilise the joints, and working particularly strongly on the abdominals and back. The movement exercises are very precise, focused and controlled, and performed on an exercise mat in a class context.

YOGA Yoga strengthens muscles, improves joint flexibility, and enhances balance, coordination and posture through a series of diverse poses (or ‘asanas’).There are many types of yoga. For example, ashtanga yoga is more energetic than viniyoga. Yoga works on the whole body without favouring one side, and includes forward and backward bending, twists, balances and inversions.Movements are coordinated with the breath. Different types of yoga have very different focuses and approaches – so it’s best to watch a class or speak to the instructor before you take part. DANCE Dance classes are a lot of fun and very sociable – plus the high concentration factor means you’ll hardly be aware that you are doing a ‘workout’, on not if you are spending half the class trying to figure out which way to spin or how to shimmy. That said, there are so many different types of dance to try that you are sure to get the hang of one of them. Ballet sculpt class won’t teach you to be a ballerina, and salsa aerobics won’t give you the skills to take to the floor like a dance champion, but what they will do, is give you a taste of the benefits of dance and appeal of the ‘real thing’.

s hard as this may be to believe, your overall health - and your lifestyle habits - can have an impact on your dental health. Case in point: recent research has suggested a possible association between obesity and periodontal (gum) disease. It may seem obvious but sugar is a major threat to dental health. Sugar, from the foods we eat, causes plaque to develop on our teeth. The plaque is then combined with carbohydrates and causes acid buildup. Then the acid breaks down the tooth enamel, which can cause cavities to form. Without treatment, cavities can penetrate deep into the tooth and cause pain or, in severe cases, tooth loss. A good way to help prevent sugars from damaging your teeth is to eat fewer sugary foods. When you do choose to indulge, do so during meal times, rather than snacking throughout the day. It is also important to practice good oral hygiene. Regular brushing and flossing and bi-annual dental visits are good strategies to help keep your teeth healthy. Among different types of junk food, soft drinks have raised particular concerns and are the main source of free sugar for many individuals. There is now a convincing evidence base linking poor oral health, in particular periodontal disease, to amplified CVD risk. Periodontal disease occurs as the result of untreated dental caries, which is in turn driven by a number of factors including poor oral hygiene and excess sugar consumption. It has been noted that the free sugars in fizzy drinks and other junk foods are particularly potent drivers of this. And did you know that

smoking tobacco products can make gum disease get worse faster? Studies have shown that smokers were three to six times more likely to suffer from advanced gum disease than non-smokers. In addition, current or former heavy smokers were five times more likely to have severe bone loss than nonsmokers. Not only does smoking potentially increase the chance that you will develop gum disease, it can make treatment much more difficult. Further, the treatment may be less likely to succeed. That’s because smoking hinders healing in your mouth. Quitting smoking is a process, it’s not easy but it’s possible. Put yourself on a path to success and create a plan: Visit your dentist for a cleaning. A clean feeling mouth feels great and can help kick start your new healthier lifestyle. Incorporate healthy oral substitutes to help curb cravings. Chewing sugar free-gum, eating healthy snacks and drinking water can help you beat a craving. When you feel you need to smoke, brush your teeth instead. Sometimes things we think look “cool” can also be a health hazard, like oral piercings. Oral infections are common, but they can also contribute to cracked or chipped teeth. Oral piercings can also lead to gum recession, which can cause teeth to come loose and fallout. Quitting smoking and losing weight are essential steps for improving your oral health.

How to treat the décolletage WITH FRANCES FURLONG

W

e focus a lot on skin care for our faces and bodies but what about how to care for your décolletage? If you’re unfamiliar with the French term, décolletage actually means a low-cut neckline but it’s often used to refer to the neck, shoulders, back and upper chest area. It can be one of the first areas to show the signs of ageing due to thinner skin, sun exposure and lack of care on our part! Problems such as fine lines, pigmentation and heavy crease lines are all tell tale signs of a person's real age. Over the years I'm surprised on how many clients work so hard to treat, moisturise and care for their faces, but leave the décolletage area trailing behind. Since we want to enjoy youthful and beautiful skin all over, let’s take a look at some ways to care for and treat your décolletage!

CLEAVAGE WRINKLES ese unsightly vertical creases occur due to the area being more delicate like our eye area. It is prone to UV damage as for most ladies it is an area shown by clothing especially in the spring and summer months, therefore being more exposed to the sun. Congruent to this we have the added fact that the breasts tend to fall together when we sleep due to gravity causing a long period of sus-tained wrinkle production. Many people advocate wearing your bra to bed to prevent this from hap-pening. But beware of the famous push up bras and sports bras which again cause the breasts to be pushed together. 1. Treatments - I get amazing results with skin boosters, tiny droplets of hyaluronic acid are placed into the dermis of the skin, and since our bodies loose hyaluronic acid as we age, we are simply replacing what our bodies have lost through the ageing or premature ageing process. ese treat-ments can also be enhanced with derma roller sessions with added vitamins and anti ageing cock-tails. 2. Products - the simplest advice is whatever your existing skin care regime is treat your neck, chest, shoulders and backs of hands with the same products. Serums are great as a little goes a long way, look for stem cells, hyaluronic acids and DMAE for an added boost. SUN EXPOSURE Due to the skin on the décolletage being delicate and thinner, it is more susceptible to UV damage. e décolletage is not only thinner than other areas but it also has less sebaceous glands. at makes it prone to dryness so we have to keep the area well moisturised and protect it with a good sunscreen. 1. Treatments - depending on the overall combination of problems to the area, skin peeling can greatly help, CryoPen sessions will help to remove brown spots, red marks, fatty lumps or unsightly skin tags that can commonly occur on the back of the neck and under the arms. Lastly Intense Pulsed Light sessions help the brown and red discolouration in a v-shape that can occur in the central chest region. 2. Products - I'm a big fan of antioxidants, vitamin C is a great natural way of lightening pigmentation and giving you a radiant glow. Retinol which is a vitamin A derivative helps discolouration and improves the thickness and texture of the skin. Glycolic acid based creams help pigmentation and refines the texture helping fine lines and wrinkles. HORMONAL CHANGES Everything from acne symptoms to oestrogen deficiency in the menopause can make big changes to the décolletage area. Women in their 40's and 50's will find accelerated ageing to this area due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, skin thinning and dryness. On the other spectrum, chest ac-ne affects an estimated 54% of adults, it can be very embarrassing for the sufferer, using good an-tibacterial products, antibiotics if required, skin peeling, laser and scar revision treatments are all helpful at managing this anti inflammatory disorder. 1. Treatments - for the menopausal women I would advise meso glow vitamin injections with Der-ma Pen needling for the ultimate repairing and nourishing treatment. Acne sufferers will benefit from mild to moderate peeling agents to kill bacteria, unblock the pores and help with scarring caused by the pustules. 2. Products - any hydrating and nourishing creams that you are using on your face will also help the chest and neck areas, look for creams that contain protein, lipids and carbohydrates and colostrum to feed the skin during the Menopause. Acne sufferers will get a helping hand from salicylic acid, glycolic, lactic and physic acids, oral and topical antibiotics may be needed for a short period also for more severe cases. n

Conversion opportunities are as diverse as the number of buildings around, and redundant churches can make for the most surprisingly unusual and exciting conversions.

T

hanks to the Victorians, who built so many surplus churches that the pews weren’t even being filled in the 1800s, a large number of these striking buildings fell out of use long ago. In 1969 the law changed to allow the release of churches for alternative purposes and, since then, over 200 have been converted. Converting a church yields several distinct design issues. Planners are unlikely to allow any major external alterations as they will want to retain the original character of the building, and existing windows and doors should be retained and restored with sensitivity. If additional light is needed for a new first floor it may be possible to insert conservation rooflights. Luckily, churches aren’t that hard to find: a list of redundant churches is available from the Church Commissioners. They also publish a useful pamphlet, New Uses for Redundant Churches, which provides a starting point for converters

(020 7898 1000 or visit the website at churchcommissioners.org). You’ll need to run your ideas by the planners before making an offer, but when purchasing a church, the offer should be made to the local Diocesan Redundant Church Uses Committee. They put the offer to the Church Commissioners, who then make the final decision. As well as the planning department, you will also have to run any plans for architectural or structural changes to the Church Commissioners for approval. If the church has an attached graveyard, the law requires any human remains to be removed and interred somewhere else if the plans will affect them. Other than high ceilings and large windows, churches often have a convenient, central location. They’re ideal for open plan living and can provide the ultimate living space for homeowners that don’t necessarily require lots of bedrooms. A mezzanine level can work well, as it might be difficult to get permission for multiple rooms on ground level. Since there’s plenty of space to build vertically, there are excellent storage opportunities. The biggest advantage however is the architecture and unique features. Vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows and mullions are hard to beat. Not everyone will feel attracted to the idea of living in a church, but you have to agree that every time we see a beautiful conversion of a formal church into a beautiful residence… we want to see more. You wonder what makes a person buy a church or chapel and transform it into a home – if you are looking for vast open space, original features and a unique design, then it could be the answer to your prayers.
