e “Hidden Jewel in the Crown” is no more as the Town Council openly celebrates the success and beauty of Bridge End Gardens, sharing with one and all the splendour and colour of these fabulous Gardens. Bridge End Gardens were created around 1840 by a local benefactor, Francis Gibson. With the benefit of Heritage Lottery and other funding, major restoration took place during the period from 2003 to 2008. e various themed areas of the Hedge Maze, Walled garden, Dutch garden, Rose garden and Wilderness Walk were all restored to the Garden’s 1870 plan – the earliest available. e first phase of the restoration work was documented in the BBC programme ‘More Hidden Gems’ broadcast in January 2004. e major restoration of the Walled garden was completed in 2008. e Gardens are now leased to Saﬀron Walden Town Council by the owners, the Fry family. e Gardens are much-used open space, enjoyed by the local community and by visitors to the Town. ey have a wide appeal and are visited on a daily basis by groups of children from local schools ranging from pre-school to secondary school. e Gardens are wheelchair accessible and are a favourite walk for parents and carers with young children, for residents from local

care-homes and from users of the Adult Resource Centre. e Gardens are also used for local events such as music and theatre performances, exhibitions and children’s competitions, as well as for private functions such as wedding receptions and functions. In September 2015, the new Visitors’ Centre was opened in the Kitchen Garden. e Centre contains information panels and interactive touch screens which provide a wealth of information and detail to the history of the Gardens. e Centre design, construction and detail was the innovation of a small volunteer group led by the Town Council and the Friends of Bridge End Garden and was fully funded through external grants successfully applied for by this group. e Town Council is keen to encourage more local use and visits in these splendid Gardens and the new Gardener in Charge, Mat Lester wants the local community more and more involved in this lovely open space. Mat started in post in February 2016 and brings with him a wealth of skills and experience and along with other members of the Operations Team is already making a significant diﬀerence to the Gardens, maintaining their natural beauty and charm. e Gardens are normally open daily and please check the Town Council’s website www.saﬀronwalden.gov.uk for specific opening hours - and don’t forget to lose yourself in the Hedge Maze which has just been re-opened for the new season.n

Spring Time inEpping Forest

pring is a time of birth and resurrection and there is no better place to see this in action than Epping Forest. e woods spring to life with new growth and new life. e seemingly lifeless over-wintering deciduous trees burst into leaf as the temperatures rise and the days lengthen. is is the time of year when nature activity is at its optimum and the Forest is alive with busyness. ere is no better time to appreciate this burst of energy than rising early, seriously early, to experience the dawn chorus. Even just for a one oﬀ experience, it is absolutely worth the eﬀort of getting up early at a time normally reserved for milkmen and bakers, to ensure being in place, in the woods before sunrise. So do check when sunrise is and ensure that you arrive in good time to settle and experience the dawning of a new spring day. Take time to be still in the presence of nature, it is an utterly wonderful experience to sit in the darkness listening to the fading sounds of the creatures of the night such as tawny owls and wood mice (and yes, wood mice can be disarmingly noisy in the dark), give way to the first joyous chords of song as each bird joins in with the explosion of sound as the first shards of sunlight creep over the Forest.

e best areas of Epping Forest to experience the dawn chorus are ideally away from roads and too much light pollution, where there is a range of habitats such as scrub, grassland and woodland. High wood and dense canopy areas will be less rewarding. Good sites to consider include e Lower Forest, Copped Hall Green, Epping Long Green, Chingford Plain, Yate’s Meadow, Wanstead Park and Wanstead Flats.

Take time to be still in the presence of nature As well as the heart lifting spring bird song, the Forest abounds with new life as young rabbits, fox cubs and squirrels emerge - equalling any spring lamb with their flibbertigibbet cavorting around. One must always take care and be mindful of wild animals on Forest roads but at this time of year, be particularly aware of the young animals wandering onto the roads. It is a sad sight to see so many young animals run over before they’ve had a chance to reach maturity. So why not set your alarm early, fill a flask of coﬀee and head for the woods this spring? You may pass a baker’s shop on the way, to grab a fresh croissant to go with your coﬀee – bliss! n

BRAESIDE SCHOOL Announces New Headmistress Q&A WITH CLAIRE OSBORN

n September 2015 it was announced that Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill had joined the Oak-Tree Group of Schools alongside Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton. In an exciting move as part of its ongoing development, Claire Osborn has been appointed as Headmistress of both Normanhurst and Braeside from September 2016. We talk to her about some of the forthcoming changes being made to the school.

Q: TELL US ABOUT BRAESIDE SCHOOL. A: Braeside is an ‘all through school’ for girls on two sites that are within half a mile or so of each other in Buckhurst Hill. Children from Kindergarten to Year 5 are in the Juniors on Palmerston Road and our older pupils from Years 6 to 11 are in the Seniors on the High Road. With its long-standing local history, excellent academic education and high level of resourcing, it’s a school that I am already proud to be a part of. Q: WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT JOINING BRAESIDE? A: Although I don’t start officially until September 2016, I’ve been getting to know the staff, parents and pupils over the last few months. is is the benefit of having a long handover period. I’m looking forward to building on the legacy of the outstanding relationships between pupils and staff. Braeside is successful school with a reputation for strong academic achievement, and I’m aiming to enhance the learning opportunities for the pupils. Q: WHAT WILL IT MEAN TO BE HEAD OF TWO SCHOOLS? A: I am very much looking forward to it. We are revising the timetable and school day at both Braeside and Normanhurst so that we can share curricular and extra-curricular activities. It will benefit both sets of pupils to be able to work together for creative and practical subjects, such as PE, Music or Drama, and to have shared learning experiences in subjects such as English or Maths. I’m looking forward to listening to the views of the two schools’ parents about priorities for development. 1 4 APRIL 2016

Q: YOU ARE ALSO A BOARD MEMBER FOR THE ISA AND A SCHOOL INSPECTOR. HOW WILL YOU FIT IT ALL IN? A: Combining many roles is a key part of the organisational skills needed by the modern Head. I have been Head at Normanhurst for six years already and I am fortunate to be supported by experienced senior leadership teams at both schools who will be able to help with the day-to-day routines. I will be a Head who is very much at the heart of both school communities. Being part of the Oak-Tree Group of Schools is also beneficial as there is a Head Oﬃce team on hand to provide administrative support. Q: HOW DO YOU SEE BRAESIDE MOVING FORWARD? A: Joining the Oak-Tree Group has unlocked the potential for considerable future growth and development. We’re looking to build new kitchens to enable Chartwells to provide the same freshly cooked lunches as the other Oak-Tree Schools enjoy, and over the summer break there will be several building projects to renew and enhance the facilities. Extra-curricular clubs continue to be developed and the curriculum is being extended. n

Abound on Epping Forest’s Buffer Lands

pping Forest is a Registered Charity owned and managed by the City of London. As well as providing thousands of acres of ancient woodland for wildlife and people, the City also owns Epping Forest’s Buffer Lands that are home to an additional set of animals to those found in the Forest itself. e Buffer Land includes a diverse mixture of land, some of which is farmed by tenant farmers as well as including small woods and copses. As well as being crossed by footpaths and bridleways, some of the Buffer Land includes free-range walking areas. ese pockets of controlled access allow for some of our shier creatures that are no longer seen on the Forest, such as hares, to thrive. Hares are perhaps one of our most alluring and secretive animals. Unlike rabbits, hares do not dig and burrow but live their whole lives above ground. When the hare rests, it will usually scrape away a shallow depression in the ground vegetation, known as a form. If disturbed from their form hares explode at a phenomenal speed of up to 35 miles per hour. Generally they lope along at a much more leisurely pace, their ears often giving their mood away – floppy relaxed ears equal a floppy and relaxed hare, upright for alert and pinned tightly back for a speedy get away.

In March and April, hares can often be seen leaping around, having crazy chases and boxing matches. e boxing is usually carried out between a male and female, involving a reluctant female, not ready to mate, fending off the advances of an amorous male. is peculiar behaviour is where the expression ‘mad as a March hare’ comes from. As well as disturbance from people and their dogs, intensification of farming methods over the last half a century have had an impact on hare populations leading to a national decline in hare numbers. Cutting grass several times a year to make silage, rather than leaving it to grow longer for a hay crop, will have had a detrimental effect. However, on the Forest’s Buffer Lands, the extensive grasslands that the City of London manage for wildlife are only cut after 1 July in most places or grazed by conservation cattle. e best place to see hares is with a good pair of binoculars from one the footpaths crossing the Buffer Lands but please do remember to keep your dog firmly on the lead. Aside from habitat loss, disturbance by dogs and walkers remains a threat to these beautiful creatures. n

hristine Baker reports on the views of the latest students to join the Loughton Art Class and how they feel about their decision to try something new. “I love it!” “I can’t wait for Wednesdays” “Adelaine and Jim are great” “I have fallen in love with Art” “I never thought I had it in me – it’s been a revelation” Everyone, without exception, feels really happy about taking the plunge and signing up for something they felt unsure about at the beginning. Although daunting at first they assured me that it wasn’t long before they moved from unsure to loving it. Ron from Woodford Green, is a semi-retired London taxi driver. “I was frightened out of my life especially when I saw all those women! But honestly it’s great and I look forward to Wednesdays.” Ron had messed around with oil paints when he was younger, trying to paint British birds, his hobby. “is is the first time I’ve had direction and they are bringing out the best in me.” Mary, from Loughton, tells me her Dad was artistic and it seems to have rubbed oﬀ on her children. “I thought his talent had bypassed me but now I am consumed with learning more. It’s the right time and I love learning new things - it’s like therapy.” Jackie, from Woodford, remembers that at school her teacher mocked her picture and made her feel useless. “Now I love the challenge; meeting new people and finally taking time out for myself.” Mandy, from eydon Bois, was given the course as a Christmas present. As a garden designer free time is a challenge and she had hoped to join the class last year.

Now though she is flourishing. “I always fancied giving it a try and I am thoroughly enjoying myself.” Sue, from Epping, heard about it from a friend. Newly retired Sue was looking for new outlets and wanted to give art a try. “I like it and find it so relaxing, it takes you away from everything else that’s going on in your mind.” Nirupa from Woodford Green is new to art while on a career break. “I felt drawn to art but it was nerve racking at the same time. Now I’m really enjoying it and finding it fun.” Sandra, from eydon Bois was not interested in art nor arty or creative. “e best I could do was draw stick men. I wanted to help my children though and since the first lesson I have fallen in love. e teachers are amazing and it’s really rewarding. It’s woken up something inside me and I am amazed at the work I have already created.” Seasons Art Class is now well established in LifeWorks, the building behind Loughton Methodist Church in the High Road. e part-time Classes run for 14 weeks. It’s a new concept in adult creative art. Courses run throughout the year with the next one starting Wednesday 25th May. Art teacher Adelaine Frank has a passion to bring art to everyone. e class has the added benefit of tutor Jim Jack, a local sculptor and artist. Both tutors provide one-to-one advice and all the help needed to develop those individual artistic skills. n

ost of us feel that we would like to write a book, whether a personal experience, social comment or full length work that records our lives and experiences. It is widely assumed that writing a book is glamorous; the inspired novelist typing like fury as the stream of consciousness flows, the words pouring seamlessly from imagination to the typewriter or computer… e truth is hundreds of hours agonising over a phrase, comment, description, or the pivotal points that determine the plots or a character’s development; then of course, the torturous editing process before letting it all go. e realities are that writing a novel is hard work, takes dedication and tenacity. But if determined, nothing will stop you! e first step is to be realistic about the process, what you would like to achieve and the necessary time. However before all of that, a few basic points to get you going: • What is your writing experience so far and would it be worth joining a book club or writers’ group? • Your target audience and book’s estimated word count? • Outline of the characters, theme and genre if appropriate. en walk around with the characters in your head for at least six months so you really know them. is is an

essential part of the creative process. If you want others to believe in your characters, then it’s essential that you do too. • How you will find the time to write? For most people, writing a novel would be alongside a day job or juggling family and professional responsibilities. It is important to be realistic as a creative process does require a steady and regular time frame in order to maintain a level of momentum. It is not easy to write a few pages, stop, and then get back into a certain place and time. • Take time to visit book stores and look at the relevant sections where your book would fit. • Only when the book is finished should you then consider the marketing or the publisher/literary agent route. Self-publishing or perhaps an eBook via Amazon as I have chosen is also an option. It is an exciting process but worth noting that despite all your best eﬀorts and plans, any level of success is also very closely linked to luck! n

n iconic image of the event are the thousands of runners pounding the streets with sheer determination, to raise money for charity, many in fancy dress, hoping to stand out from the crowds. More than three quarters of competitors now run for a good cause and a third of all entry places are offered by charitable organisations. When Virgin was announced as the title sponsor of the London Marathon in 2010, the ambition was to work together to reach a charity fundraising target of £1/4 billion in five years. This figure has been

broken, with the total raised for charity in the five years of Virgin Money sponsorship now standing at £261.4 million. In addition, over the last three decades the London Marathon Charitable Trust has awarded more than £35 million in grants to develop sport and recreation facilities in the capital and other areas in the country where the London marathon stages events. The elite races start at 9am for women and 9.45am for men, with the London Marathon wheelchair races beginning at 9.20am and the mass race at 9.45am. Celebrities lined up to take part this year include Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes, Hollywood A-lister Natalie Dormer, Radio 2 presenter and new Top Gear host Chris Evans, Iwan Thomas MBE, EastEnders’ Charlie Brooks and Robert ‘Judge’ Rinder. Some advice to those that wish to go along and support and cheer on the brave runners, many roads are closed on race day, so the best way to get around is using the London Underground, South Eastern and Docklands Light Railway (DLR), who lay on extra services especially. Remember, the trains will be busy all day – expect it to be like rush hour. You’ll probably have to queue at some stations and the tube lines may be forced to shut temporarily throughout the day to help ease the crowds. WORRIED ABOUT YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE? Why not have the doctor visit you at home?

igh blood pressure or hypertension is a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke. It is also responsible for heart failure, kidney disease, eye disease and dementia. Millions of people will have hypertension and do not even know. It rarely causes any symptoms until one suffers from one of its severe complications later on in the disease process. It is scarily known as the ‘Silent Killer’ due to the slow detrimental effects hypertension has on your body. As you are more likely to develop hypertension as you get older, the NHS offers all patients above 40 years of age a NHS Health Check in order to identify hypertension and risk factors (smoking, obesity) which lead to heart disease, stroke and many other conditions mentioned above. A simple blood pressure reading will give an idea if the blood pressure (BP) is within healthy limits. However, as BP varies throughout the day and can be influenced by stress, fever and exercise, national guidance (NICE) suggests diagnosis of hypertension should not be made by individual readings taken in clinic. If the clinic BP is more than 140/90, a diagnosis of hypertension should be confirmed by using a 24-hour Ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) device. ABPM allows doctors to accurately identify a diagnosis of hypertension and identify those who require treatment and risk factor modification. It furthermore eliminates inappropriate treatment for those patients who have abnormally high blood pressures when taken at the GP surgery, but drops when they are at home – this is known as ‘white coat hypertension’. ABPM can in addition be used to identify BP accurately for those patients already on treatment, to

ensure BP is well controlled throughout the day and night and ensure appropriate spacing of anti-hypertensive medication. Conventional ABPM has a cuﬀ fitted on the upper arm which inflates every 30 minutes for 24 hours which can be uncomfortable for the patient. A newer machine has recently been developed which uses a ‘watch’ device which measures the BP without inflating but by detecting and analysing the patients pulse. is has been thoroughly tested and endorsed by the British Society of Hypertension and patient groups have found this much more comfortable. Scars to Face and Body WITH FRANCES FURLONG

his month's focus is on treating scars to the face and body, not only do they cause great distress to those suffering with these conditions they can affect a person's self esteem greatly. ey can be caused by traumatic injury to the body, as a result of acne or other inflammatory skin disorders, due to stretch marks because of increased weight gain or pregnancy. As an experienced Aesthetic Nurse Specialist I get so much satisfaction combining my medical knowledge with my artistic flair for helping to transform a problem area on the body or face. e changes that can be achieved can be incredible for a person's confidence and I am privileged to be able to help. A scar can be defined as a mark on the skin after a wound or an injury to the surface of the skin. Scars can occur inside and outside the body, from surgical procedures to acne and chicken pox trauma. When our skin becomes wounded and a break occurs in the body's tissue, the body then produces a protein called collagen as part of the natural healing process. For up to three month's post trauma new collagen continues to form, blood supply increases to the area. erefore the scar may look raised, lumpy or red, following the three month recovery the collagen stops forming and the blood supply reduces and the scar will gradually smooth out and look paler. When we are younger we heal quicker and as part of the ageing process it takes us longer to heal, also some medical conditions such as diabetes and vitamin deficiency can affect our rate and efficiency to heal. TYPES OF SCARS e different types of scars include: Flat, pale scars - these are the most common type of scar and are due to the body's natural healing process. Initially, they may be red or dark and raised after the wound has healed, but will become paler and flatter naturally over time. is can take up to two years. Top tip - speed up the process by using Intense Pulsed Light therapy and use serums which contain stem cells and colostrum. Hypertrophic scars - red, raised scars that form along a wound and can remain this way for a number of years. Top tip - help soften and flatten scars using microdermabrasion or AHA based treatments or products. Also hydrocortisone injections. KELOID SCARS ese are caused by an excess of scar tissue produced at the site of the wound, where the scar grows beyond the boundaries of the original wound, even after it has healed.

Top tip - excellent results can be achieved with derma pen and laser treatments and hydrocortisone injections when they initially form can help soften them. Pitted (atrophic or "ice-pick") scars - these have a sunken appearance. Top tip - hyaluronic acid droplets placed into the dermis of the skin in conjunction with dermal roller or derma pen treatments can improve scarring greatly. Depending on the type and age of a scar, a variety of different treatments may help make them less visible and improve their appearance. Cosmetic camouflage makeup can be a useful tool and of course surgical procedures can help repair. EMOTIONAL EFFECTS OF SCARRING Scarring, particularly when it is on the face, can be very distressing, especially if you feel you are being stared at. If you avoid meeting people as a result of your appearance, you may become socially isolated. is can lead to feelings of depression. If you feel that your scars are making you depressed or affecting your daily activities, make sure you visit your GP as you should not suffer in silence. PREVENTING OR IMPROVING SCARS It isn't possible to prevent scars from forming, but there are things you can do to help your scar be less visible and heal better, such as immediately cleaning dirt, objects and dead tissue from wounds. Other ways to improve scarring include: not scratching or picking at scabs and spots. n
