UNTIL 16 November Janine Partington: Maker in Focus
8-23 November ‘war & peace’ at the wimbledon music festival Wimbledon International Music Festival 2014 has unveiled a highly thoughtful, creative and expansive programme for this year’s festival. Focusing on the theme of ‘War and Peace’, festival director Anthony Wilkinson has formed imaginative collaborations and partnerships once again, creating unique events and providing a platform for brilliant new generation artists. This year is Wimbledon’s most expansive year with a number of world class artists performing, including the much celebrated Borodin Quartet with Michael Collins, The Sixteen, The Philharmonia, Lawrence Power and The Katona Twins. Wimbledon’s concerts will also take place in venues such as St. John’s Church, Spencer Hill and Wimbledon Synagogue, venues with great acoustics that are definitely worth travelling to. A particular highlight is also the The Schubertiade - two concerts of Schubert with The Fibonacci Sequence with the option of a Viennese Dinner during the interval. A special Baroque menu will be served at the Light House Restaurant in Ridgway, a short walk from St John’s Church via Denmark Road. The War and Peace theme does not only serve to commemorate the centenary of WW1, as the brilliant guitar duo The Katona Twins will bring a programme of Spanish music interwoven with the poems and prose of famous international writers who responded to the Spanish Civil War. The Philharmonia Orchestra will also perform Richard Strauss’s masterpiece ‘Metamorphosen’, composed in the final days of WW2. www.wimbledonmusicfestival.co.uk

Janine combines the traditional craft of enameling with fresh, contemporary designs. Enameling is the art of fusing glass onto metal. It is a versatile, durable, strong and impervious material which is well-suited for every room in the home or workspace from kitchen to bathroom, from washroom to boardroom. Janine takes inspiration from the shape of things around her such as trees, flowers, leaves and seed heads. Exploiting the sensitive relationship between the copper and enamel is at the heart of her work. She is constantly playing with the materials, seeing where they can take her. The Cork Oak Quercus suber, which can be found in the Amphitheatre, is over 200 years old and the last remaining one planted by Hamilton

f you are looking for a beautiful autumnal walk then look no further than Painshill. This stunning 18th century landscape garden features magical follies and a wonderful collection of trees which put on a spectacular display of colour in the autumn. Painshill was created in the naturalistic style between 1738 and 1773, and was the artistic vision of one English gentleman, the Hon. Charles Hamilton, 9th son and 14th child of the 6th Earl of Abercorn. A painter, plantsman and brilliantly imaginative designer, he dedicated his creative genius to the layout and composition of a landscape which was renowned in Europe at the time and remains so today. In 1981 the Painshill Park Trust was formed to rescue Hamilton’s masterpiece from utter dereliction. Nearly all the follies have been restored or re-created and the landscape has been cleared and replanted with thousands of new trees and shrubs. Only plants which would have been available to Charles Hamilton during his time at Painshill have been used to bring the past alive for a new audience. During the restoration project the Trust discovered many notable historic trees which have been carefully preserved. The Cork Oak Quercus suber, which can be found in the Amphitheatre, is over 200 years old and the last remaining one planted by Hamilton. This particular tree was a favourite of the poet Matthew Arnold who lived in Cobham during his retirement, from 1873 to 1888. Native to the Mediterranean the Cork Oak is the primary source of wine bottle corks. The Giant Lebanon Cedar Cedrus libani is also very special - it is not only believed to be the largest of its kind in Europe, it was one of the exotic trees that Hamilton introduced to Painshill from abroad in the 18th century. Taller than nine double-decker buses piled one on top of the other, this majestic tree has occupied the site for more than 250 years. If you stand in the Gothic Temple you will get an outstanding view of this splendid specimen. One other tree not to miss is the Swamp cypress Taxodium distichum which gradually changes colour from green to a beautiful golden red-brown in the autumn. One of the few deciduous conifers, it is the famous tree of the Everglades in Florida and was introduced to Britain by John Tradescant in the mid-1600s. Painshill has been awarded full collection status for the John Batram Heritage Collection of North American trees and shrubs by Plant Heritage (NCCPC). This collection is stunningly beautiful in the autumn months and Berry Walk at the Chinese Bridge Peninsula, is an absolute must to visit. THE DETAILS Painshill is offering free entry to visitors every Wednesday in November (opening times 10.30am until 4pm). ••••• For more information visit www.painshill.co.uk

festive exhibition of beautiful handmade porcelain lights by artist Amy Cooper. Amy’s work addresses the fragility and transience of life and the natural world through the transformative properties of light on porcelain. She continues to explore a monochromatic spectrum that is created through the use of textures, variation in thickness and diffusion. The work is slip cast porcelain, each piece individually altered, either through manipulation when plastic or painstakingly masked and sandblasted at bisque. Amy’s porcelain range includes table lamps, lampshades and tea-light holders. Amy Cooper is a Cornwall based designer and maker of
work with glue. I have some loose elements which are also added, I sandblast the work until the areas that are covered by the stencil stand proud. The stencil is then removed, revealing the design. The pieces are fired to 1250 °C and diamond polished before being wired up. For more than 50 years, New Ashgate Gallery has been a window into arts and crafts and provides an unparalleled resource in Farnham, Surrey and beyond. We cultivate the pursuit of excellence in a marketplace environment, with ongoing support to emerging artists, by exhibiting their work and through professional development. We promote the creative process for all communities through workshops, talks and outreach work.
New Ashgate Gallery has been a window into arts and crafts and provides an unparalleled resource unique porcelain lighting. Amy says: All my pieces are slipcast and individually altered and decorated, no two are exactly the same. My most recent work is inspired by my more immediate surroundings, the magic of a garden or woodland at twilight and dawn, as well as softly remembered animations from my childhood. I am trying to recreate an atmosphere that delights as well as unsettles a little, which suggests tales and secrets as well as familiarity. Initially the pieces are slipcast, I have a selection of moulds to create different forms. To create my new designs the pieces are bisque fired and sanded to remove any imperfections. After the piece is sanded I apply a stencil I have made specifically for that form from an original drawing, attaching it to the

The Horse at War: 1914-1918 The Lightbox gallery and museum, 25 November 2014 – 1 March 2015
T
he Lightbox gallery and museum in Woking, Surrey, will commemorate the centenary of World War One with the exhibition ‘The Horse at War: 1914 – 1918’ (25 November 2014 – 1 March 2015). Exploring the role of the horse in World War One, the exhibition will compare the glorified image of Officers and their chargers at War with the piteous desolation of these animals as beasts of burden when faced with gunfire and trench warfare. The Lightbox is delighted to announce that ‘Joey’, the original West End horse puppet from the National Theatre’s acclaimed stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel ‘War Horse’, will feature in the exhibition. The puppet, designed by Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones of Handspring Puppet Company, has kindly been loaned to The Lightbox by the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Theatre and Performance Collections. This will

be the first time that ‘Joey’ will have been shown in an exhibition outside of London. Three mannequin puppeteers, in costumes designed by Illustrator and Theatre Designer Rae Smith, who won Tony and Olivier Awards for her scenic designs and drawings for the National Theatre’s production of ‘War Horse’, will be displayed with Joey. Drawings by Rae Smith, which were created for sensational projections and animations for the National Theatres Live performance of ‘War Horse’, will also feature in the exhibition. Rae Smith’s ‘The War Horse Panorama’, a 24 metre panoramic which tells the entire story of ‘War Horse’, will also be on show. Michael Morpurgo’s author’s note for ‘War Horse’ states that his inspiration for the character Captain Nicholls came from an old oil painting with an inscription of the name ‘Joey’. Rae Smith recreated the character’s sketchbook and these drawings became the 26 metre long scenic backdrop
for the performance of ‘War Horse’. Examples of works by World War One artists, similar to that of the painting that inspired Morpurgo’s novel, will also be included in the exhibition. Now celebrating its seventh year on the London stage, Nick Stafford’s adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s book continues to play to sell-out houses, and has been seen by over 5 million people worldwide. ‘War Horse’ tells the story of a young boy Albert, and his beloved horse Joey, who has been requisitioned by the army to fight in World War One. Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in No Man’s Land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home. Chris Harper, Producer of ‘War Horse’, said “We are delighted that Joey, the equine star of War Horse will have a new temporary home at The Lightbox in Woking as part of this important exhibition about horses in World War One. War Horse has had an incredible journey from its beginnings at the National Theatre in 2007 and with its continued run in the West End, and in this poignant year that marks the World War One centenary, we hope that Joey’s appearance at the exhibition, will help to inform this generation about the important contribution horses made 100 years ago.” Curator of the exhibition, Michael Regan, has developed a unique layout which will depict the story of the horse at war through many different facets, combining contemporary elements with original works from artists present in the battlefield. The exhibition will also investigate the effects that losing thousands of horses to the war effort had on the local Surrey farming communities and other businesses that relied on horses for transport.
THE HIGHLIGHTS Joey, the original West End puppet from the National Theatre’s award-winning stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel ‘War Horse’. The Handspring Puppet Company donated Joey to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2013, and will be on display at The Lightbox from 25 November 2014 until 1 March 2015. The West End Production of ‘War Horse’ continues at the New London Theatre, currently booking until 14 February 2015. It is also currently on a tour of the UK and Ireland. Forward the Guns! 1917, Lucy Kemp-Welch, Tate. This picture portrays a charge of horses pulling artillery. According to the artists’ obituary in ‘The Times’, Kemp-Welch had sat with her easel on Salisbury Plain while eight batteries of horse artillery were driven towards her so that she could sketch the general outline of their movement. The artist’s original sketches will also be displayed alongside the painting.

Best Dressed Fireplaces Since man first started to use iron, accessorising the fireplace has been a major focus. Tools that not only do the job but are also richly decorated with flora, fauna, pattern and texture have accompanied fire for thousands of years.
O
ne of the earliest British examples is the Capel Garmon firedog, found by a farm worker in North Wales in 1852, and believed to date from around 50BC-AD50. Firedogs were usually made in pairs, and are still used to raise firebaskets off the hearth of a fireplace to allow air to circulate. Historically, as well as lifting logs and baskets from the hearth, they also functioned as spit rests, as mulling aids (ale and wine were warmed in jugs supported on special holders incorporated into the firedogs) and as status symbols reflecting the wealth and importance of the owner. The Capel Garmon firedog features striking animal heads, and would have been an exceptional feat of craftsmanship in its day. Modern blacksmiths, two millennia later, still favour animal heads to embellish firedogs, pokers, chestnut roasters and toasting forks. Leaves are also popular, as well as the beautiful knots, twists, cages and plaits practised by accomplished smiths for centuries. Contemporary design also plays its part alongside the traditional choices – wonderful, squashed forms exploit the plasticity of hot iron, and the waxy sheen of careful hand-finishing highlights the subtle colour and texture of the worked metal. Firebaskets, in which logs or coal are burned, have an equally rich history, as do firebacks – heavy iron plates, almost always ornate, that lean against the back of a
2 2 NOVEM b e r 2 0 1 4
fireplace to reflect heat into the room. Log storage has become a specialist area in recent times – log hoops of many shapes and sizes are used inside and outside to keep logs tidy and off the floor or ground. Every well-dressed fireplace needs a firescreen, to prevent the occasional spark doing any harm. These are usually made of flat mesh in an interesting frame, or mesh woven into a curtain suspended from a rail. Fire and Iron Gallery at Rowhurst Forge in Surrey has been making fire accessories since 1932. An impressive collection of firebaskets, firebacks, tools, log hoops and firescreens is on display and available to buy at the gallery throughout the year. here’s something at Chamberlain’s to please everyone. One of the City’s foremost fish restaurants, this thriving business in historic Leadenhall Market - owned by one of Billingsgate’s leading wholesalers, that supplies the top London hotels - has long had a flourishing lunchtime trade. And now it is becoming very popular in the evenings too; Chamberlain’s has recently introduced a five-course tasting menu, which is available at lunchtime and in the evenings and offers excellent value at just £49.50. Chamberlain’s award-winning executive chef, Andrew Jones, who has worked in some of London leading five-star hotel restaurants, has created the menu and is it already proving a great success with City-based foodies. Andrew Jones says: “The nature of the City is changing; we are finding that our traditional business is being augmented by a growing tourist and leisure trade. Chamberlain’s is now regarded as a destination restaurant. Clients have told us that they want us to extend their dining experience with a tasting menu. This is something we have always offered as a bespoke service to regular customers, but feel the time is right to include it on our main menu. “The tasting menu offers a great opportunity to try several dishes from our menu in one visit – it comprises smaller portions of dishes on the a la carte menu, and changes on a regular basis. We’ve kept it to five courses so that clients with limited time can enjoy it in around 90 minutes, fitting in with business lunches. And of course, it can be enjoyed over a longer period in the evening!” The menu changes seasonally, but currently starts with Cèpes Galette, a few ‘delicious, intense mushroomy

Next, with a nod to the superb fish available from parent company, fish wholesaler Chamberlain and Thelwell, comes Baked Paupiette of Lemon Sole & Crab Mousse. This magnificent creation is artfully presented and served with butternut squash, forest mushrooms, spring onions and crab cream. Roasted Rose County Fillet Steak follows, then Crème Caramel, with baked figs macerated in Marsala. Wine pairing is available for an additional £35. And, as with all their menus, a full vegetarian alternative menu is offered and any special dietary requirements can be catered for on request. The business also has a very successful events catering enterprise, which caters for all manner of functions, from an intimate gathering in someone’s home to a sumptuous feast for 2000 people in one of the City livery halls. www.chamberlainsoflondon.com

Selfridges at Christmas atop the historic neo-classical Oxford Street canopy. Expressing storytelling in a 3D exhibit, it is made of a mix of polystyrene and aluminium and decorated with 1,000 metres of neon lights and over 10,000 LED lights. Called Destination Christmas, the canopy features universal fairy tale symbolisms with a little Selfridges twist, such as the Golden Goose wearing a monocle and a top hat. The installation is the biggest neon sign to be seen in London this Christmas.
Storytelling will continue within the store at every turn….
Selfridges has nominated what it considers to be the 25 most enchanted stories ever told
The Selfridges Christmas story – entirely composed in rhyme - is a clever mash-up of a number of well-known stories which transform into a brand new tale, and is available to read in full and to listen to at Selfridges. com where pop-up online radio station extraordinaire, The Butcher’s Apron, has been invited to host regular storytelling slots, bringing some amazing tales to life. www.selfridges.com
T
he compelling storytelling qualities of arguably the greatest story ever told – Christmas – and the desire to escape into fantasy and enchantment at Christmas time, brings you Selfridges’ new festive season theme: Storytelling. To celebrate, Selfridges has nominated what it considers to be the 25 most enchanted stories ever told, stretching across different eras as well as themes – they are not all about Christmas, but they all have enchantment in their tale and have been selected to be at least one generation old – so no Harry Potter in sight. The oldest story featuring within the top 25 is over 300 years old (Sleeping Beauty by the pioneer of the modern fairy tale genre, Charles Perrault) and the most recent to make the cut is Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman first published in 1978. Outside the top 25 most enchanted stories but within the wider context of the celebration of storytelling, Selfridges is also embracing a broader mix powerful, legendary, famous and compelling stories – including the great stories told through film. During the festive season, the Everyman cinema at Selfridges, the world’s first department store cinema, will show a series of enchanted tale-based films including Pinocchio and It’s A Wonderful Life. Selfridges’ Christmas windows and facade have been designed to be the storytelling celebration’s most visible and most spectacular showcase. Several of the world’s bestloved tales including Cinderella, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel are told – all with a cheeky and contemporary twist. This won’t be the London store’s only masterful display visible from the street… A dazzling centrepiece installation will vie for attention

The first of the 5km Santa Fun Runs will be at Bushy Park on Sunday 30 November at 10.30am. A further two runs will be taking place at Richmond Park on Sunday 14th November at 10.30am and 12.30pm. Last year Niall Stokoe was the first to cross the finish line in Richmond he said: “It’s been great fun and I thought it was a fantastic route. What better way to start the Christmas season than a 5 kilometre run dressed as Santa?” Women’s winner Harriet Naismith said: “It has been a really fun experience, although I have to say it was very surreal seeing hundreds of Santas running through the park.” Keen runner Bradley Patt said: “I try to do at least one Santa Fun Run a year. It’s great to be able to give something back to Princess Alice Hospice who do such brilliant work throughout the year.” Amy Kellaway from the Hospice’s Fundraising Team said: “We have had runners ranging from as young as 10 weeks old in a baby carrier to those in their eighties. It really is an incredible event with Santas running, jogging or

The cost to enter for over 12’s is £12 and for this you’ll receive a Santa Suit. For the under 12’s it’s just £4 and they will receive Reindeer Antlers. “Of course we’re also hoping that everyone will also be filling their sponsorship forms too so we can raise as much money as possible.”

The benefits of taking
financial advice I have often been asked by people, what the benefits of taking financial advice are, and is it really beneficial to spend the time and effort to undertake this, instead of doing it all yourself?
O
ften I find that people only understand the benefits after they have gone through the process but below is a useful summary of just a few of the potential benefits: • It will give you clarity of your financial affairs, and more importantly whether you are on track to reach your financial goals and live the lifestyle that you aspire to live. Often, people do not know when they can retire, or how much they will need to retire. • You have the reassurance that your existing assets are performing as they should be, invested in an environment appropriate to your risk tolerance and not being excessively charged in the process. This needs constant monitoring and worth checking when did you last review your investments or pensions? • It provides you peace of mind in areas often overlooked – for example avoiding huge problems if you were to lose the income of the main wage earner. How would you or your family cope? • You could be paying unnecessary tax (income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax) as many of the taxes we pay can be mitigated or certainly reduced by effective ownership of assets or utilisation of tax efficient allowances. • Help get your affairs in order – I have lost count of the times that I have been told by clients “I will make my Will next month”. • If you are a business owner looking to sell your business,
• If you are a business owner looking to sell your business, do you know how much you need to sell for? do you know how much you need to sell for, in order to provide sufficient funds to allow you to live your desired lifestyle? Utilising the unique proposition of True Potential Wealth Management, I provide a personalised service ensuring transparency & clarity in all advice provided:• Ability to view all your investments and track how they are performing against your goals 24/7, on your own personal website (available on the web and mobile phone) - this can save you a huge amount of time to spend on other important matters. • Detailed planning tools, which enable you to quantify, and track performance against a pre agreed set goal – providing you clarity on your financial future. Although I have helped many people, I cannot guarantee that my services will be of interest or benefit to you. However, I would be happy to talk through your personal 4 6 NOVEM b e r 2 0 1 4

Luxury Yachting Experience
on the French Riviera
I
f Monaco and St Tropez are indeed among the world’s capitals of luxury, then this was to be the ultimate press trip exposé into lavish living and indulgence. Arriving from Gatwick with Monarch airlines (www.monarch.co.uk), we swooped down onto the sun-baked tarmac of Nice airport to be welcomed by Rumble Romagnoli, our host and director of luxury web marketing firm Relevance (www.relevanceweb.com).
4 8 NOVEM b e r 2 0 1 4
We were instantly escorted to Monaco for the final day of the 24th edition of the Monaco Yacht Show (www.monacoyachtshow.com). Bottles of champagne and expensive entrées were liberally supplied and everywhere visitors were cordially met with open arms. In particular Lisa Peck, the global marketing manager of Fraser Yachts (www.fraseryachts.com), who welcomed us aboard four of their superyachts. We firstly visited the frankly outrageous 54m M/Y Sea Force One. Its sleek silver and black exterior did little to betray what lay on the inside: beyond a decadent lounge area with sumptuous décor, a neon lit living area designed for lavish parties that no pen can describe in writing. Head humming from the giddy combination of Mediterranean heat and sparkling wine, we were fortunately offered a seat in the shaded terraces of the highly exclusive Yacht Club de Monaco for an exquisite buffet of gourmet food served in regal quantities (www.yacht-club-monaco. mc). Not a moment was spared as we were soon once again upon the bustling ports of the Mediterranean principality and aboard the supreme 46.7m M/Y Lady Petra with its modern living areas shared between a Jacuzzi and expansive lounge and dining decks. We were also introduced to the high-performance chase boat M/Y
YXT One and finally M/Y Ulysses, an altogether more traditional vessel with a neo-classical interior design across all the floors of its 56m body. Departing to the deafening roar of 150 superyacht horns ceremoniously signalling the exhibition’s end, we returned to Nice to dine on chef Jean Michel’s regional delicacies at the classy HANgoût restaurant, including an expertly rendered tender cut of beef. Seven contented journalists, stomachs full, stumbled back to the comforts of luxury four star Hotel Aston La Scala, to enjoy drinks and spectacular views over the Place Masséna from the rooftop terrace and bar (www.hotel-aston.com). The following morning, a chauffeured drive along the Cote d’Azur lay ahead, finally ending at the enchanting gulf of St Tropez’s natural terminus: the illustrious port of St Tropez. 28th September marked the second day of the famous ‘Les Voiles de St Tropez’ regatta
The host port is alive with the hum of celebrities mingling with billionaires in luxury beachside restaurants (www.lesvoilesdesaint-tropez.fr/en). The host port is alive with the hum of celebrities mingling with billionaires in luxury beachside restaurants and the sound of popping champagne corks and clacking camera shutters. Indeed everything is excess in the small port town, never more so than on the day of the regatta itself. Steeped in history, we crossed the port’s ancient ramparts to soak in the view of the rows of moored racing yachts, before heading to Relais Chateaux’s ‘Pan Deï Palais’ (www.pandei.com). The luxury hotel, a historic building itself, was originally constructed by a French general in homage to the beautiful Princess Bannu Pan Deï, and provided a fittingly romantic and extravagant setting for the final meal of our press trip. There was little antiquity to be admired in the fine four course meal we enjoyed there however. All of the dishes were irresistibly light and demonstrated the cunning of modern cuisine, with interesting and original flavour combinations in the Sea Bream wrapped in banana leaf, the Tiger tear steak with sweet potato and ‘jus’, and the sublime blackberry soufflé accompanied by pear sorbet for dessert. There was scarcely time to savour the Provençal cuisine however as we were quickly whisked aboard a Grand Banks boat with the nautical equivalent of front row seats for the thrilling regatta race. Chasing behind some of the
performance sailing yachts in action, the unadulterated excitement of Les Voiles de Saint Tropez was almost tangible. The heady heights of spectating the race from the top deck’s sun drenched seats were soon to become heightened further still, as we shortly found ourselves looking down upon the famed ports of the French Riviera through the window of our return flight home. Thus concluding a wonderful weekend of luxury on the magical Cote d’Azur.

It slides open automatically to reveal a fluid space inside, where grand, graphic statements are offset by delicate details and luminous surfaces. The eye is drawn to an imposing flight of 4-metre-wide polished concrete stairs leading to a giant projection on the first floor’s end wall and the spectacular cast-concrete

latticed ceiling above. By boldly cutting away diagonal portions of the floor plates on the upper and ground levels, Farshid Moussavi Architecture (FMA) has united all three floors of the 560-square-metre space, bringing luminosity and striking sightlines through the interior. Elegance and ingenuity underpin a flexible interior scheme devised to complement rather than overpower the clothing on display. Wafer-thin shelves retract into walls and moveable blonde gold hanging chains are set in recess tracks to make way for installations, events and developments in the five different Victoria Beckham collections of Victoria Beckham ready-to-wear and Victoria, Victoria Beckham, Accessories, Eyewear and Denim. Smooth American walnut and bottle green glass surfaces accentuate generous changing rooms and cash/wrap areas, designed for a discreet and
personal shopping experience. The warmth of these materials is reflected throughout the store in pristine mirror stainless steel that lines walls as well as the ceilings of the ground and lower-ground floors, and creates immaculate counters for folded apparel and accessories. The four facets of the ground floor’s load-bearing columns are clad with vitrines to create prominent sunglasses pillars. Freestanding furniture is bespoke; modular, triangular seating is hewn from a single piece of walnut. Brights, neons and pastels might take a back seat for autumn, but there’s certainly no skimping on dramatics this season By Lisa Haynes, Press Association

ake-up looks backstage at the international catwalks saw loaded-up lashes, otherworldly supernatural skin, and eyes resembling artists’ palettes. There’s a pared-down shift for ‘real life’, but these hyper-trends set the focus for autumnal beauty. The season summed up? “A/W14 is all about skin,” says Val Garland, make-up artist for L’Oreal Paris. “There’s a lot of graphics on the eyes but barely a lip in sight.” Update your look for autumn by acing these top trends.
This painterly trend is more wearable than it sounds. Stick to matte eye shadows and use soft washes of two or three autumnal hues, applied with your fingers. This season’s new-trend palettes will do all the colour combining for you. PRO TIP: “Be free and fabulous with this sort of eye look,” Garland advises. “ It’s colourful and artistic, so you should be relaxed and fluid in the application. And it doesn’t have to be too ‘pretty’ - remember, colour can still look tough.”
RAINBOW WAVE
MINIMAL SKIN
One colour is not enough when it comes to this season’s eyelids. A myriad of shades beamed from sockets in rich, decadent hues.
Juxtaposing this season’s bold eyes, minimal skin is in. Luxuriously naked complexions should look effortless, but technique is everything to achieve that ‘real’ but beautiful finish. Think gentle highlights to bring the features forward, and multiple concealer tones to adapt to your skin. Forgo your fingertips for the precision of make-up brushes. PRO TIP: “It’s about really priming the skin with moisturising treatments and oils first,” says Aaron de May, make-up artist for M.A.C. “Use concealers to cover only redness and spots, but nothing else. Foundation covers and masks, concealers allow you to detail more.”

To play on dramatics, look to your eyes rather than your lips this season. The catwalks even used gel textured eye make-up that imitated plastic. While black is the go-to definition shade, the same look can be achieved with dark coffee or deep purple liners and mascaras for a softer spin. PRO TIP: “You don’t have to be extreme,” reassures Pat McGrath, Max Factor global creative design director. “Sometimes, it’s the combination of eyeliner, brows and lashes that can turn a look up a notch or two. “Keep brows groomed, intensify your mascara, and don’t be afraid to play up your eyeliner to create a bolder shape.”

Untouched eyebrows are the order of the day for AW14 - except you’ll need to do exactly the opposite to achieve the look. Think romantically soft, brushed-up arches. The finished result should look as though your brows have barely even met a pair of tweezers. PRO TIP: “Begin by taking a stiff angled brow brush and eye shadow in the same tone as your hair colour,” recommends Marc Reagan, manager of artistry for Bobbi Brown. “Lightly apply from the inner corner of brows and brush straight up. For the rest of the brow, brush up and over.”

Lisa Haynes waves away the remnants of summer with an exfoliating skin treatment

ou know you’ve put your exfoliating regime on vacation when you take off a pair of black trousers and there’s a mini snow storm. With summer drawing to a close, my body was shedding a mix of real and fake tan. Not a good look. For a top-to-toe overhaul for autumn, I book myself into the new Aqua Sana Spa at Center Parcs Woburn Forest. The World of Spa is vast, with two floors and six multi-sensory spas to explore before your treatment. I find the Reflexology Foot Baths, Herbal Sauna and Blossom Heat Room are particular favourites. Feeling blissed out, I pad to the treatment waiting room in my robe and slippers for the Decleor Red Island Exfoliating Ritual.
Inspired by Madagascar, with fragrant oils and exfoliating fruit seeds, it’s the perfect post-summer treatment to restore my sapped skin. The first half is all about exfoliation, so isn’t the most relaxing 25 minutes, but the skin-sloughing is most definitely called for, as the therapist describes my body as ‘dry’. She mixes together powdered fruit seeds of orange and apricot with Decleor’s Relax Intense massage balm, which has a beautiful fragrance of Madagascan vanilla and ylang-ylang essential oil. The seeds feel slightly rough on my skin but Kate, my therapist, smooths them all over my back and limbs and then wipes off the excess with a mitt. After a warm shower, I’m back on a bed of warm towels with noticeably smoother skin. Kate uses the Relax
Intense balm (minus the seeds this time) for a relaxing massage, and expertly shifts between her hands and an acacia wooden relaxer. The circular tool kneads into tired muscles as my skin soaks up the balm. Afterwards, my flesh feels nourished and soft. That’s both me and my skin re-energised for autumn; now my wardrobe just needs to catch up. Decleor Red Island Exfoliating Ritual, from £65 for one hour at Aqua Sana Spa. Locations at Whinfell Forest, Sherwood Forest, Elveden Forest, Woburn Forest and Longleat Forest. Spa Days from £69 pp (nationwide). ith the end of the year fast approaching, why not make it a brand new you – look your very best with The Cosmetic Doctors Company. We offer an unrivalled selection of treatments to get you feeling and looking gorgeous. With over 20 years experience in cosmetic medicine, Dr Peter Forrester has an integrated approach to facial rejuvenation using a combination of therapies. These include anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, precision peels, UV light treatments, INTRAcel, ThermaVein® and state of the art skincare. After your consultation an individual treatment programme will be developed specifically for your needs. Treatments are selected to produce the very best results with rapid recovery and minimal down time. All treatments are medically endorsed and based on proven scientific principles. The very latest new and exciting treatment from The Cosmetic Doctor’s Company is Aqualyx, which is a solution for problem areas of localised fat! So if you are worried about excess fat on your hips, thighs, stomach, knees or even your neck read on…
What is Aqualyx?
Aqualyx is an injectable treatment for the dispersal of areas of fat. It is best used on troublesome areas that do not respond to diet and exercise alone. It is not a method of weight loss but is used to improve the contour of treated areas. Aqualyx can treat localised fat deposits such as those on hips, knees, thighs, tummy and love handles as well as double chin and jowls. As well as fat reduction it may cause some tightening of the overlying skin. It is recommended that a course of 2-4 treatments may be needed to achieve the best result.
How does Aqualyx reduce areas of fat?
The active ingredient in Aqualyx is a well-documented substance naturally occurring within the body. The solution consists of desoxycholan acid, related to the body’s bile salts that are part of the natural process for breakdown and metabolism of fat. When Aqualyx is injected it causes fat cells to breakdown. The dissolved fat is then gradually and safely eliminated from the body.
major complications or problems. After treatment the fat melts away very slowly and is eliminated from the body; the treatment does not result in any increase in levels of blood lipids and cholesterol.
What happens during an Aqualyx treatment?
The Aqualyx solution is injected into the areas of fat to be treated using a special fine cannula. There will usually be two injection spots per treatment area. There may be some shortlived, mild discomfort during injection and often a warm sensation in the treated area.
How quick is the recovery?
There is likely to be some immediate redness and swelling. In the following days there will be some swelling, bruising and local tenderness. This will depend on the area treated and will vary from person to person. This will usually take 2-7 days to settle and occasionally longer.
How quickly will I see the results?
When the initial swelling has subsided the treatment area may initially look unchanged but over the next weeks the fat will progressively disperse. This will take 4-6 weeks. The number of treatments is dependent on the personal response of every individual, but in general a course of 2-4 treatments will be needed to achieve the optimum result.
How long will the results of Aqualyx last?
Within the body, fat cells naturally have the ability to expand and contract as we gain or lose weight. Aqualyx will permanently destroy fat cells in the treated area and these will not come back. However unless you maintain a healthy weight your remaining fat cells will expand.
Is Aqualyx a good treatment for men?
Aqualyx works equally well in both women and men.
Is Aqualyx right for me?
To get the best response from Aqualyx you should already have a healthy, active lifestyle and diet. If you are within ½ stone of your ideal body weight and have localised fat deposits that require re-contouring then Aqualyx could be for you.
Is Aqualyx safe?
Unlike other injectable fat treatments, Aqualyx has full CE approval for use within the UK. Since its launch in 2009 over 2 million vials have been sold to practitioners treating patients across Europe. There have been no reports of 5 8 NOVEM b e r 2 0 1 4

Hair Removal such as legs, back and chests can be treated effectively as well as smaller areas such as bikini line, beard, sideburns, upper lip and full facial hair removal. Even though laser hair removal is a longer process than the two minute shave, this is something that really lasts. Trueskin advises having approximately six treatments every four to eight weeks to ensure optimum results although more or less may be required. The Trueskin Aesthetician will be able to guide you more accurately after your free consultation and test patch. One question that is constantly asked is “does it hurt?”, so we put the question to the experts. Whether it’s your legs, underarms, chest or face, it might seem that you are fighting a losing battle against unwanted hair…the stuff just keeps growing! Traditional methods such as shaving, waxing and hair removal creams may give quick results but within days those pesky follicles spring back to life and we end up right back where we started. Laser Hair removal is becoming increasingly popular and accessible, offering lasting hair free results in a short period of time. Victoria Beckham once said it was the best beauty tip that Eva Longoria ever gave her! 88% of women already spend four months of their life removing unwanted body hair and over two months of this is spent shaving their legs, so here’s a breakdown to explain why laser hair removal has become so popular.

Great news - your favourite scarlet varnish is very much in vogue this season, as red ruled the runways at the AW14 fashion weeks. But why not expand your colour palette and take inspiration from some of the stand-out shows? Dolce & Gabbana’s luxe fairy-tale fantasy collection was a major hit with the fashion pack. Give your hands a hint of that gilt-edged glamour with a brushed gold polish. Ever on-trend, Burberry has handily launched a set of six nail colours to coincide with its autumn/winter collection, which saw trench coats and floaty dresses daubed with abstract floral motifs. Get Ski Fit How to get fit for your skiing trip
I
f you want to seriously get into the sport, you need to make sure your skiing fitness is up to scratch. So, to make sure that you’re not left nursing aching muscles – or worse – after your first day careering down the slopes, check out our guide to getting ski-fit. Flying down the slopes all day on two narrow strips of fibreglass with only a pair of thin poles for support will place unique demands on your body. To cope with these demands, you’ll need to focus on the following three key areas for your training to boost your skiing fitness:
Flexibility training
Skiing strength
The last thing that you want to do on your skiing holiday is get an injury – so the best thing to do is prepare your body correctly by building up your skiing fitness. For injury prevention, your main focus should be on flexibility training, particularly in the legs. As we have mentioned, the calves and Achilles tendons are important to your flexibility – but you should also ensure that you are loose and supple in the following two areas: • Quadriceps (front of the thigh). • Hamstrings (back of the thigh).
Skiing demands specific training for improving your strength. The primary areas to focus on for skiing fitness strength are: Legs. Focusing on the quadriceps muscles at the fronts of the thighs is particularly important, because maintaining the correct skiing position means that the quadriceps will be loaded the whole time. Triceps. To maintain your balance when skiing, you will
If you’re flexible, you will have a good range of movement, which is extremely important when it comes to skiing fitness. Additionally, being flexible in the calves and Achilles tendons (at the backs of the lower legs) is vital, because your ski boots will force you to ‘hinge’ at the heel, thereby stretching both the calf and the Achilles in each leg. If you’re tight in either of these areas, your risk of injury will be much higher.
How to avoid skiing injuries
To maintain your balance when skiing, you will have to continually drive your ski poles back into the snow have to continually drive your ski poles back into the snow – and the specific muscles that facilitate this are the triceps at the back of the upper arms. Core muscles. Your core muscles will keep you upright and help you to balance. Without good core strength, you will have no control on the slopes.
Cardiovascular ski fitness
You won’t be running or moving forward under your own steam for most of the time when you’re skiing, but that doesn’t mean you won’t need good cardiovascular (CV) fitness. Skiing requires total body control in order to stay upright – and this will place a continual demand on your CV system as you employ every muscle group in order to remain balanced. 6 6 NOVEM b e r 2 0 1 4
However good your preparation is, though, one thing is certain when you go skiing: at some point or other, you’re going to fall over. So, to avoid common injuries such as broken collarbones, work on your all-round mobility as much as possible. This way you will be in control of your body, and so when you do fall over you will be able to position yourself quickly and easily – rather than be awkward and stiff in your movements – which will make you less liable to suffer an injury. Additionally, try to have a couple of sports massages as part of your après-ski routine, as these will flush out the waste products in your muscles from your day’s skiing and help to keep your muscles in tip-top condition throughout your holiday. Skiing is all about fun, and you certainly don’t have to be an elite athlete to enjoy the sport!

How to avoid being forced to replace replacement windows Sadly, many UK property owners are not conversant with the Building Regulations, which come into force the moment any homeowner decides to replace any door or window, or indeed if creating a new builders opening or adding an extension.
T
o avoid any nasty surprises in the future, it is therefore important before ordering replacement windows or doors that property owners get clued up on what they can and cannot do if and when replacing doors or windows. Nowadays, trying to sell a property without proof that new products added to a dwelling fully comply with the Building Regulations, can not only slow down the sale, but potentially jeopardize it and certainly will reduce what a purchaser is willing to pay. Proof that a new window or door complies with the
So, to avoid the unnecessary expense of being forced to replace new replacement windows and doors by your local authority’s Building Control Officer, it makes sense to ensure that both the products you have fitted, and your installer comply with the FENSA regulations. To avoid having the wool pulled over your eyes by a replacement double glazing installer looking to cut corners, here are some of the key facts you need to know before ordering new doors or windows. 1 You/your installer are not permitted to lesson ventilation. For example, if your existing windows and doors have trickle vents, your replacement products must also have these fitted. 2 You/your installer are not permitted to reduce the overall amount of opening vents in any window. For example, you are not allowed to replace an opening window with a fixed one, nor replace a full height side opening casement window with for example an opening fanlight over a fixed pane. 3 You/your installer MUST ensure that all replacement windows in all habitable rooms are fitted with emergency egress with “an unobstructed openable area that is at least 0.33 square metres and at least 450mm high and 450mm wide.” 4 Emergency egress “windows should be designed such that they will remain in the open position without needing to be held in position by the person during their escape.” 5 You/your installer MUST be able to prove that the replacement windows you fit can achieve a minimum of
You/your installer MUST fit toughened safety glass in all replacement doors and in all bathroom windows current Building Regulations is provided either by your local council’s Building Control Department (i.e. when having an extension or creating a new builders opening after having obtained Building Regulatory Approval from your local authority) or by obtaining a FENSA certificate if replacing windows or doors using a FENSA registered installer. FENSA is the Government authorised Competent Persons Scheme for the replacement of windows, doors and roof lights in England and Wales. 7 8 NOVEM b e r 2 0 1 4
an energy rating of “C” or have a maximum combined U-Value of 1/6 W/m2K. 6 You/your installer MUST fit toughened safety glass in all windows that are within 800mm of the internal floor level or within 300mm of any external door. 7 You/your installer MUST fit toughened safety glass in all replacement doors and in all bathroom windows that are adjacent to a bath or shower. 8 You/your installer MUST fit a door to the principle
entrance to a dwelling with a clear opening width of 775mm to any extension or new build home. “The clear opening width is taken from the edge of the frame on the latch side to the face of the door leaf when open at 90 degrees.” 9 You/your installer MUST fit a low threshold to the principle entrance door of an new home or extension. And if replacing a door “when the outgoing door is compliant with new build requirements the replacement shall also be complaint.” 10 Except for kitchens all habitable rooms in the ground storey should either: a) open directly onto a hall leading to the entrance or other suitable exit, or b) be provided with a window (or door) which complies with the Fire Safety requirements.set out in the Building Regulations. It is therefore wise to select an experienced FENSA registered installer to assist you in designing your replacements doors and windows to ensure that they fully comply with the current Building Regulations. The cost of having to replace brand new replacement windows and doors that do not comply will be far higher and disruptive than paying a bit more to install compliant products well fitted by tried and trusted FENSA registered double glazing suppliers. Traditional meets contemporary at the Chamber Furniture Company Dark Oak with double island display
T
his luxurious display in Chamber Furnitures large Kent showroom combines two extremes of styles-on one side is the contemporary flush handle-less flat wall, while the other side is more traditional – both in the same dark oak finish. The designs have been refined in order to include LED lights and the worktop is 80 mm thick quartz. The islands have the look of old rectory tables with a contemporary flush gas hobs. The porcelain floor has eight different 600cm square tiles fitted randomly for an eclectic look. The wall tiles are oversized gold ceramic (300x100). Both create a stunning and complementary backdrop to the dark oak furniture. An intriguing mix of traditional and contemporary styles!
