IT DOESN’T GET ANY T
he Fish Media management were selected from a pool of premium media by Relevance, the PR agency in Monaco, and invited to the Monaco Grand Prix to get a taste of French Riviera lifestyle. On the Saturday of the Grand Prix qualifications, Rory and I got up and set off on a weekend to remember. We were fast tracked through Gatwick Airport by the excellent No. 1 Traveller to get to our Monarch flights. The flight to Nice was a breeze and 45 minutes after hitting the tarmac, we were in the prestigious Paddock Lounge overlooking the qualification. The Paddock Lounge is part of the 5-star luxury Hermitage Hotel, one of Monte-Carlo SBM’s delightful hotels in the Principality (www.montecarlosbm.com).SBM provides an exclusive F1 concept with a terrace which overlooks the superyachts of Monaco’s Port Hercule. Contact Fraser Yachts brokerage house for yacht services (www.fraseryachts.com).
“The Paddock Lounge is part of the 5-star luxury Hermitage Hotel, one of Monte-Carlo SBM’s delightful hotels in the Principality” For Q2 we headed over for lunch at the famous Café de Paris. Our concierge, Hélène, from Monte-Carlo SBM led us up a back stairway to avoid the crowds and we were soon seated in the shade of the Monte-Carlo Casino, overlooking the casino turn.
A “once in a lifetime” weekend in Monaco to watch the Monaco Grand Prix 2014 in luxurious style…….

Lunch was an excellent buffet accompanied by an exciting side-dish of the controversial Lewis Hamilton battle with Nico Rosberg to secure pole position. The service was simply excellent and the company great. The Café de Paris is a splendid place to catch up on what is happening around the entire track on a large screen. We moved on to the Hotel de Paris terrace for Q3, overlooking the Massanet corner.

BETTER THAN THIS Watching the drivers pull through the gears from the long straight and head into this corner was hair-raising and really every reason why you should come to the Grand Prix in Monaco.
up white chocolate bavarois and key limes in a strawberry cup with fresh raspberry. Each course was accompanied by an exquisite complementary wine, expertly selected by Grand Cros (www.grandcros.com).
Before we knew it, we were whisked away in the chauffeured black Mercedes to get a taste of the French Riviera. Our first stop was a penthouse on the 34th and 35th floors in the Château Perigord, offered for sale by La Costa Properties Monaco luxury real estate (www.lacosta-propertiesmonaco.com/en/), which is the leading agency in the Principality with a stunning portfolio of prime properties. This dream penthouse overlooks Monte-Carlo with panoramic sea views, from a commanding position.
French Riviera property expert, Philip Weiser gave us the benefit of his 30 years real estate experience on the Cote D’Azur with an overview of the region’s property market. Sleep was easy to come by under the sumptuous covers of the Sylviane beds and with race day upon us, we set off for Monte-Carlo.
Moving away from the bright lights, we headed through towards Valbonne, a quaint Provençal Roman village. Our party was welcomed at the Domaine de la Sylviane (www.domaine-la-sylviane.com), a delightful ancient monastery available to rent with Carlton International (www. carlton-international.com/en). We were accommodated in the former monks’ cells, now comfortably converted into cosy, Provençal style bedrooms. We toasted our beautiful surroundings with a delicious light and bright champagne selected by Ayala(www.champagne-ayala. fr/en). Chef Emmanuel Sofonea (www. unchefchezvous.com) provided scrumptious toasts with salmon before moving on to a gourmet four course meal with amazing produce and ingredients provided by Froggy Gourmet (www.froggygourmet.fr). Finding enough energy after this back-to-back day, we moved up to the bar where we lapped
where the pool party had already started and champagne was duly sprayed. A very memorable and almost regal 48 hours in Monte-Carlo. Monarch fly to Nice from London Gatwick. Flights London Gatwick start at £32.99 each way. Please note that taxes and fees apply and customers are reminded that checked baggage, extra leg room seats and on board meals should be booked in advance for the best price. (www.monarch.co.uk).
“It doesn’t get better than this” cried one of the journalists in our party. It was a truly apt comment as we were introduced to THE spot of the Grand Prix by Claudia Batthyany: The Fairmont Monte Carlo overlooking the most famous bend in the world. The Grand Prix track view room accommodates up to 12 people. Four night packages start at 6,700 Euros (www.fairmont.com/monte carlo). Philip, the executive chef at Nobu, Fairmont Monte-Carlo arrived and dosed us with champagne and delightful canapés. Once the race started with Nico Rosberg in pole, the engine noise echoed around the skyscrapers of Monte-Carlo making the experience almost deafening. One feels quite almighty watching the most skilled drivers on the planet racing the most advanced human driving machines up high with a glass of champagne in hand. After an ecstatic couple of hours of speed, crashes and intense competition, Nico Roseberg won with Lewis Hamilton right behind. We then ascended up to the roof

Flower Show contemporary alternatives to the garden lawn • A selection of awe-inspiring show gardens • Tradestands – find new sheds, pots irrigation systems and more. • RHS Celebrity Theatre supported by Anglian Home Improvements Show gardens From the seven deadly sins, to the wilds of Australia - there are diverse themes for the show gardens this year. Each of the Conceptual Gardens is themed around one of the seven deadly sins. Rachel Parker Soden is creating a garden with a theme of lust, re-contextualising the flower show garden as a brothel in its own red light district and the flower show visitor as a voyeur. Nilufer Danis’s design for wrath has been inspired by the instability of an eruptive volcano. Marcus Green’s beautiful meadow planting has at its centre an artificial representation of the perfect lawn, depicting the sin of envy, while Sarah Jane Rothwell and Joan Ma Roig’s greed design depicts a confessionary and invites the viewer to consider the analogy between judge and sinner. Katerina Rafaj’s gluttony garden focuses on the sin of food waste in a world where millions of people are starving, and Sheena Seeks is creating a sloth-inspired design. Finally, Amanda Miller is creating a design symbolising pride. The conceptual gardens at Hampton are often thought-provoking, inspiring and often controversial and this year looks no different. ·
“From the seven deadly sins, to the wilds of Australia - there are diverse themes for the show gardens this year”
Former RHS Chelsea Flower Show designer Jim Fogarty is designing a show garden called ‘Essence of Australia’ that recreates the feel of the Australian Garden at Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens. The garden celebrates Australian flora and contemporary design as seen at the multi-award-winning 15-hectare Australian Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne, a division of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. The show garden will evoke the relaxed feel of
Australia and Australians’ love of outdoor living as well as celebrating the states and gardening landscapes of Victoria and Northern Territory as two key travel destinations for British holidaymakers. · Still with an international flavour, World Vision is presenting the last of its trilogy of gardens inspired by the 30th anniversary of the Ethiopian famine – ‘The World Vision Garden’. · Viewing platforms either side of the Jordans Cereals wildlife-themed garden will give excellent vantage points of Selina Botham’s design, while Rebecca Govier’s abstract legacy-themed design for Macmillan Cancer Support is another highlight. · Coolings Garden Centre is celebrating its centenary with a woodland-style garden.
Other highlights include: • A central wildlife feature will include a native butterfly house • The RHS will be staging a new Talks Theatre with talks on a wide range of gardening topics • Writhlington School will be creating a stunning and educational orchid display themed around a project they are undertaking in Sikkim, India • Your Garden, Your Budget (in association with the APL) will showcase gardens that include practical solutions to the kind of design problems faced by home gardeners and at a range of budgets.

New foodie haven to open at Newlands Corner
there’s a fantastic foodie treat in store for visitors to one of the Surrey Hills’ most popular beauty spots this summer
N
ewlands Corner is a haven for lovers of the great outdoors , attracting vast numbers of walkers, cyclists, horse riders, bird watchers – to name a few – all year round. Since the closure of The Barn restaurant at Newlands Corner last year there has been quite intense speculation as to what would be taking its place. So we are delighted to confirm that the owners of Tillings Café in Gomshall are launching a new venture there this summer. Tillings Cornerhouse Café & Cave will provide a delightfully contrasting food and drink offering to their existing Gomshall venue. We met up with owner Jane Radford to get an update, and she couldn’t be more excited about it all. “We want the Cornerhouse to have the sort of vibe you would normally expect to find in a great urban deli-cafe – and our trademark home-made menu has been given a faster, “food to go” make-over to suit ” says Jane. “ We’ve had great fun re-working dishes into

“This location is just so stunning” she continues “ We know that in anything but the wettest, coldest weather customers will just want to get back outdoors as soon as possible to soak up that incredible view, be it sitting in our own lovely garden or back over at Newlands Corner itself.” We have to come clean and admit to Jane that we a bit intrigued by thename - not just a Café – but a Cave ? “This is probably the most exciting part of all” laughs Jane . “ We are fully licensed and we will be staying open late a couple of evenings a week ,serving simple food and great wines and beers. We have a Belgian manager who has introduced us all to the delights of not just cheese with wine but more importantly cheese with beer. As a lover of Belgian beer myself I can only say it’s a marriage made in heaven…”
Look out for details of the Tillings Cornerhouse &Cave on the Tillings website www.tillingscafe.co.uk. You can use the contact form to register to be kept up to date on opening times and events.
Finally – is the Gomshall Tillings staying put? “Of course!” says Jane. “I think a few of our customers have been anxious that the Cornerhouse is going to replace the Gomshall Café but this is the perfect opportunity to announce the Cornerhouse as a new addition to the family. Incredibly, we’ve been open 3 years now in Gomshall and have become quite the local institution. But we do have a few little plans up our sleeve for the mothership that we know our customers will love. We’ll get cracking on those in the Autumn... can’t wait !” And with that we had to leave Jane to get on with her busy schedule, but not before she gave us news of a great offer. Simply register on the website contact form as mentioned above, mention this article, and receive a 20% discount voucher.

The season ahead…. What will the Courtyard woman be wearing for Autumn/Winter 2014/15?
T
he Autumn collections at Courtyard have started to arrive and there are many new designers making their debut. The buyer and owner, Julia Jaconelli has travelled across Europe to find luxurious and must have pieces that cannot be found anywhere else in the U.K. These include cashmere from C’avagan, a luxurious collection from Venice, David Christ from Hamburg which is another gorgeous cashmere collection and a wonderful scarf collection called Mala Alisha from Salzburg. The scarves have a super soft handle with original prints that are fresh and yet have a slight vintage feel. The generous size of each scarf means it can be worn in many different ways. Julia loved this collection so much that she has become the distributor of the brand and will be showing the scarves at Scoop, a prestigious trade fashion exhibition,to premium buyers throughout the UK for summer 2015.

Diane Von Furstenberg, Luisa Cerano, Fabiana Filippi, Marc Cain and Hauber all have knitwear too as well as coordinating pants, skirts, dresses and coats. A stunning coat is a must whether it be a puffa with a fur collar by Mabrun, a tweed coat by Harris Wharf, a brightly coloured French 3/4 length coat by Femme, a jacket in the softest leather by Luisa Cerano or a casual but glamorous parka by Parka London. One-stop dementia healthcare with Red & Yellow Care
A
revolutionary new dementia care service is now available in London and the South East. Red & Yellow Care is the UK’s only private healthcare provider fully dedicated to dementia. They provide personalised care of outstanding quality, putting the person with dementia and their family at the heart of everything. Dementia is a common condition affecting more than 800,000 people of all ages in the UK. It is estimated that by 2021 this number will have increased to around 1 million. Symptoms include memory loss, increased difficulty with thinking and planning, language difficulty, failure to recognise people or objects, a change in personality and depression. As the condition progresses, people typically develop multiple and complex health issues beyond the dementia symptoms. Red & Yellow Care believes that the way in which people with dementia are cared for could be greatly improved. The right clinical care can make a big difference, but few people with dementia receive the care they need; it can be difficult to access or is completely fragmented. Red & Yellow Care was set up by leading dementia specialists to overcome this fragmentation and uniquely provide integrated care across physical, mental and social health.
3 8 J U LY 2 0 1 4
They provide both fast-track diagnostic assessments and a comprehensive postdiagnostic care service including: • Prompt consultations with world-class consultants, nurses and therapists who are all specialised in dementia • Bespoke healthcare packages led by a named dementia nurse who assesses, monitors and manages the individual’s health, supports the carer and family, and liaises with Red & Yellow Care’s multiprofessional team, the GP and other care providers • Treatment, care and support wherever needed - at home, care home, hospital or in their consulting rooms in London • Total peace of mind and continuity of care - Red & Yellow Care stay with the patient every step of the way
Red & Yellow Care developed this ground breaking approach to improve overall health and wellbeing, facilitate independent living, and enable people with dementia and their family to live life to the full. “There are many systemic barriers in the delivery of healthcare, notably between physical and mental health,” said Dr Bahbak Miremadi, Founding Director, Red & Yellow Care. “We have ignored the status quo and designed the ideal scenario; a care service that revolves around the individual. In other words, care without barriers.” To find out more about Red & Yellow Care or read their inspirational report ‘A Good Life with Dementia’, visit www.redandyellowcare.com or call 0203 7000 163.

Sunny Days are here. Keep Your Skin Looking Its Very Best Many day creams, moisturisers and makeup now contain a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) usually SPF 10-15. We believe that, although these are better than not using any sunscreen, you should not rely on them alone to stop the acceleration of skin ageing that UV light causes. The latest research shows that sun protection is not about just using conventional sunscreens, n MB BS Msc Dr. Peter although they still have a vital Dr. Mark Aitke Forreste r MBBS MRCGP FRCA role in maintaining skin health. Together with a sunscreen this will provide You need protection and repair. maximum protection to UV and other environmental stresses. t is now an established fact that most of the deterioration of facial skin that occurs with ageing is caused by the effect of years of exposure to damaging UV light. If you want proof of this, compare the skin on your face to that on your inner, upper arm to see the effect of UV light. Sun-protection is not something to be adopted for just a few weeks in the summer but should be considered all year round. Significant amounts of harmful UV rays pass through clouds; this means protecting your skin even on cloudy winter days in the UK. Sunlight exposes you to two kinds of UV light. These are known as UVA and UVB. The effect of UVB rays is quickly noticeable – they cause redness and sunburn. However the effect of UVA rays is much less apparent but these are the rays largely responsible for skin cancer and photo damage such as wrinkling and pigmentation. Hence just because you don’t sunbathe or get tanned doesn’t mean that you do not need to protect your skin.

Our top recommendation is Ossential Daily Power Defense from ZO Skin Health. ZO Skin Health is the brainchild of Dr Zein Obagi; one the world’s leading cosmetic dermatologists. ZO Ossential Daily Power Defense is a lightweight cream for application in the morning after cleansing but before sunscreen. It contains DNA repairing enzymes that repair oxidative stress caused by UV exposure, as well as antioxidants that prevent further damage and retinol that stimulates cellular activity, reduces collagen degradation and encourages greater fibroblast activity. If you only use one protective and anti-ageing product then this is the one. For year round protection we recommend sunscreen and ZO Ossential Daily Power Defense. One of the problems with wearing higher SPF creams is that many people find them unacceptably thick and white; hence we are always evaluating high SPF sunscreens that are cosmetically acceptable in use. With this in mind, our top three sunscreens for year round use are: • Heliocare Advanced SPF50 Gel • ZO Skin Health - Oclipse Sunscreen+ Primer SPF30 • Glo Therapeutics Oil Free SPF40+

UK women are wasting £148million on products they can’t use after reacting to them, according to new research by sensitive skin experts Pai Skincare, to mark Allergy Awareness Week (which runs until May 4). “The difficulty for many shoppers is that seemingly reassuring terms such as ‘hypoallergenic’ or ‘dermatologically tested’ actually mean very little,” says Pai Founder and skin allergy sufferer, Sarah Brown. :: Recessionista alert Wax lyrical about Australian Bodycare’s special offer. Vitamin B to help hydrate the skin from within, Vitamin C to fight free radicals responsible for extrinsic ageing and Vitamin E to help the skin heal naturally so reducing the effects of sun damage. Increase your water intake. • Apply sun block regularly, not forgetting neck, décolleté, hands, feet and backs of knees. Wear a hat and polarized sunglasses and stay in the shade when the sun is at its hottest between 11am 3pm. • Stock up on natural diuretics to beat the bloat - watercress, fennel, peppermint tea are excellent natural choices. • Try AnevaTM Derma the wonder drink containing hydrolyzed collagen and hyaluronic to protect and plump the skin and prevent dehydration. • Take advantage of the sun to top up your levels of Vitamin D and enjoy being outdoors (always use your sun block) - gentle exercise releases ‘feel good’ endorphins.

“I headed to The House of Rush in London’s Piccadilly, where I was eased into a reclining leather black throne” A tiny amount of Elemis Lime and Ginger Salt Scrub Glow was mixed in with Frangipani Monoi Body Oil, which made the scrub feel luxurious rather than scratchy. My feet were then soaked in a warm tub of creamy Skin Nourishing Milk Bath and patted dry. The therapist began cuticle work, making my toes look immediately more presentable - something I always neglect in DIY pedis. The Frangipani Monoi Body Oil was then used again for a luxurious foot massage, which felt like it unknotted all the tension from my soles. As a finishing touch, my toes were painted with an Essie One Of A Kind coral polish and massaged with Exotic Cream Moisturising Mask, right up to my shins. As a celebration, I went out and bought some new toe-baring sandals. Slipper boots, you’re officially in retirement - these feet look too good to hide.

Do you love proper furniture? (So do we, that’s why we’ve been importing it for over 50 years.)
Our Origins
people only dream of.
Wharfside Furniture was founded by Nathaniel Stewart in 1962. Originally a carpenter in the bustling furniture centre of Shoreditch, London, Nathaniel was one of the first to import dining furniture from Denmark.
We also have an M25 showroom, located in Leatherhead, Surrey. This shop, with its high street store-front and its friendly, experienced staff, is the ideal place to experience Wharfside Furniture. Our future
The Scandinavian aesthetic appealed to the UK market, as did the superb quality, and Wharfside became known as the direct source for Danish furniture. Today we have happy customers who first bought their dining suite as newly marrieds in the 1960’s. Who we are today Nathaniel’s son Jonathan took over the business in the 1980’s. Jonathan raised Wharfside to a new level of luxury. We now specialise in bespoke furniture; wall units, kitchens, dining, lounge and bedroom furniture designed and made to order. Since our factories are small and specialist, and our staff have years of experience, we are able to provide a level of service which is unparalleled. Jonathan introduced the award-winning Austrian company, Team7 to the UK. Team7 are known worldwide for their luxurious designs, the finest European hardwoods and an uncompromising commitment to the environment. Today, our warehouse is still located in Shoreditch, which is now the capital’s coolest district. With exposed brickwork, steel girders, and a glass roof, the large showroom is an icon in its own right. It also happens to be a treasure trove for lovers of luxury furniture. Take the time to explore and you will discover furniture most 5 2 J U LY 2 0 1 4
Team7 solid wood bespoke kitchens have never before been seen in the UK. The solid European hardwood, finished only with pure natural oils, creates a healthy environment ideally suited for the kitchen. The designs are contemporary, the finish is superior and the options are extensive. We now sell worldwide. Our online presence means that we take orders from all over the world every day. We also have many happy customers who will use us to furnish their properties abroad as well as at home. Our third generation, Alex Stewart (http://www.alexnstewart.com) is a sculptor who has created an artists’ studio within the Shoreditch warehouse. Feel free to request a tour when you come to visit the showroom. So, what is proper furniture? By ‘proper’ we mean well-made, well-designed, and well... beautiful. We are passionate about wonderful furniture, and we believe that you could be too. Inspired? Come visit us in Shoreditch or Leatherhead or online at www.wharfside.co.uk. You won’t regret it.

Seall Landscapes In The Surrey Hills
I
was born in the Surrey Hills – born into me was a love of the inspiration given by nature. The landscapes and environment throughout the surrey Hills are best viewed in terms of archaeology as well as nature, as throughout it’s history back even to pre-Roman times it has been valued for it’s riches, both aesthetic & resource. This included it’s strong links with the cultivation and harvesting of timber for the manufacture of gun powder, which has meant that the naturally beautifully sculpted land has all been worked by the hand of man and of course woman. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of the hedgerows and their banks in spring time and I cannot think of a way of improving how they look or their place in their landscape. – Sometimes I pass the same spot and don’t notice the same view. That is when I know that I need to call on the old and much forgotten Holmbury skill of leaning on a field gate and taking in the view for a good half an hour. As a landscape and garden designer I believe
6 0 J U LY 2 0 1 4
that part of my job is to connect my client with the beauty that is, or can be found in their greater landscape, For this, I use the garden as the medium. Throughout the Surrey Hills the Arts and Crafts movement of architecture and it’s input on the garden is beautifully present, Lutyns, Vasey and of course Gertrude Jekyl. The effects of these masters of their trade as well of the wealth of the old estates that funded them, the industry, the agriculture and the woodland management have left a legacy that needs to be appreciated, shared and managed. The landscape around us is a living breathing thing and as conservationist it is my privilege to work with wild flower meadows, ponds and lakes. I consider it a gift to have lived my life up to now inside these Hills and through my garden building and conservation works (www.surreyhillsconservation.co.uk) I have the opportunity to pass that onto others and
that, makes me feel truly grateful. Another new chapter is evolving as I write these words. Along with my family, Joanna and our two children Frankie and Max, we are setting up ‘Surrey Hills Yurts’. We are fortunate to have a small holding of just over 15 acres on the side of Leith Hill in the Heart of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Amongst our organic herd of pedigree Sussex Cattle, Gloucester Old Spot Pigs and varied wildlife, we are putting in six Ashe framed Yurts and a straw bale round house with a Hobbit front door. Here children and adults will be able to learn rural skills including willow sculpting and mammal surveying, whilst acting as a base to explore this world class area of natural and sculpted beauty. – By David Seall Seall Landscapes: 01483 271994 www.seall-landscapes.co.uk www.surreyhillconservation.co.uk

to weed or not to weed?
O
ne of the things about gardening, which I like the least, is controlling the growth of weeds. Left to their own devices they can develop from little seedlings into full grown weed colonies within weeks. Uncontrolled these weeds are quick to flower and seed, before you know it they start spreading more and more aggressively. Weeds are basically any plant that is growing in the wrong place, by their nature they are not planted, where they grow, they include wildflowers but also cultivated escapees. I have to admit I am not antiweeds even to the point that I allow some weeds to flourish but only in a controlled way, or at least that is what I aim to do. One of the reasons I am willing to allow nature some control over what grows in my garden, is that the vast majority of ‘weeds’ are good at flowering and producing seeds, in so doing they are magnets for wildlife. On a sunny day you will see huge quantities of bees and hoverflies frequenting this sumptuous banquet of pollen and nectar and later in the season other animals
6 2 J U LY 2 0 1 4
such as birds gorge themselves on the plentiful harvest of seed. To me this is an added dimension that cultivated plants alone cannot replicate, many of these produce flowers that are incapable of producing nectar and pollen or have flowers that are so unnatural that the insects are unable to easily feed from them. As I have already mentioned the plants which become weeds come from a variety of backgrounds, many are from cultivated or semi cultivated backgrounds. Some plants which appeared and I have nurtured to great effect in my garden include the herbaceous geraniums, Geranium Johnson’s Blue or it’s offspring. I now possess a large border which for most of the summer is a sea of geranium flowers and hoverflies. I suspect these are offspring of ones I planted in a different part of the garden, although I cannot be sure! They provide not just flowers but also excellent ground cover and the maintenance required is minimal
H OUS E & GA RDEN
which involves the removal of the odd more vigorous weed and once a year in the late summer running my mower over them on it’s highest setting. In this same area I have a multitude of alliums, that have self-seeded in this semi-wild environment to great effect. Elsewhere in the summer I can enjoy Verbena
“The plants which become weeds come from a variety of backgrounds, many are from cultivated or semi cultivated backgrounds” bonariensis, an ‘in’ plant which I planted years ago, for most of the year they are invisible, the parent plants either having died or removed by myself during weeding. They quickly germinate and produce a little rosette of leaves which skulk amongst other plants, until one day they decide to flower. These flowers however, do not skulk, within a week of the flower stem emerging it elongates and before long you can have flower stems two foot or more tall with dainty purple flowers borne on top in clusters, a vertical dimension which is very attractive in many settings. In others I remove them quickly so that nature is not given a free hand.
escaped and now grow happily in a sunny border, creeping into the edges of the lawn. They are adapted well to spreading by producing runners and copious flowers throughout the summer months. Once in flower Bumble, Mortar and Honey bees gorge to the extent they get drunk which is an interesting phenomenon, they are not the only ones to enjoy this herb with my own kitchen being enriched by the leaves, an invaluable herb! My final weed of choice is the teasel a giant of a plant that can grow in excess of six foot in a year a structural plant that also provides a one plant seed store for finches. The moral of this article must be ‘ do not be too quick to remove ‘weeds’ just because they are in the wrong place. www.plantsforall.co.uk

mong the first things a guest sees on a visit is the house name or number sign. A Lead sign from Redfields exudes true class, an understated style that would become both castle and cottage. Lead has a beautiful, blue-grey patina that mellows with the passing seasons, a natural hue that blends well with all colours of brick, stone and stucco. Lettering can be accentuated in complimentary colours and either burnished or antiqued at your request. Redfields signs are made to last, when wood rots, cast iron rusts and slate laminates, lead remains. Lead is renowned for its incredible durability, indeed some Roman lead plumbing is still in service to this very day. Lead’s malleability allows it to be easily bent to follow the curve of a wall or tree. Redfields signs are available in a variety of 6 4 J U LY 2 0 1 4
shapes and sizes and they will happily quote for bespoke designs. Signs can be made double sided for hanging and they can supply beautiful English wrought iron brackets and posts to suit. Redfields signs are individually hand crafted from the purest refined lead at their Hampshire foundry. The signs are made from old wooden patterns in the traditional way. Letters and numbers are laterally inverted

Be wary of “Quick-Fit Fitters”
Sometimes UK home owners expectations of delivery for bespoke replacement double glazed windows and/or double glazed doors are not very realistic, as they don’t appreciate what is involved
P
ut simply, tailor made windows and doors are just that, made to measure products in terms of design, colour and size. Fenestration products not designed, measured, fabricated or installed correctly can lead to unwanted aggravation for property owners. To highlight this, if a double glazing supplier has a surveyor, fabricator and/or fitters sitting round waiting on your order, it would be sensible to ask them why? There are lots of really decent double glazing installers in the UK, many of whom work primarily on recommendation. These sorts of firms are likely to be booked up many weeks in advance, because as a general rule customers would rather wait and have their replacement
6 8 J U LY 2 0 1 4
windows or doors measured right, manufactured right and installed properly, than have all the hassle caused when one or more of these operations is rushed to the detriment of a decent job. It is better to have really good quality, well-made windows and doors which are fitted a couple of weeks late, rather than to have them poorly designed, and/or made defectively and/or fitted in to much of a hurry. It is easy to understand why customers are tempted to rush things along wanting their project completed as fast as possible, or customers who get pressurized by their builder or developer to buy windows and doors from a firm that their builder “recommends” that will deliver the products
when the builder wants. Builders are notorious for wanting to fit new windows and doors as quickly as possible so they can move on to their next building project! Builders can therefore be keen to suggest buying windows and door products where they can get them fast, and not necessary the products that will be the best investment for the property owner, who is after all the customer, so should be the person specifying which windows and doors they require, and fitted by whom they trust to do a good job that will leave them with well installed products. To undertake a replacement window project properly, a professional surveyor should take careful accurate measurements (so they end up fitting properly), then raw materials have to be ordered (any coloured products

a waiting list? It is wise to be wary of any double glazing company “promising” a quick delivery in order to get you to sign up with them, as the last thing you want is to regret handing over a large deposit to the wrong company for the sake of a few weeks wait. So beware the quick fit window or door fitter! The danger of paying over a deposit is that once a customer has paid a supplier, they are then really stuck with that supplier (unless prepared to lose the deposit) however long that supplier then takes to supply and fit the products. Before ordering from any double glazing company, ensure you’ve a) done thorough research on who you plan to partner with - so you can be confident they will still be around in 10 years time!, b) read recent satisfactory customer reviews and c) seen the products first hand they will be supplying so you know for certain what to expect. If you’d like any free help or expert advice on a no obligation basis from independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd on any double glazing project you are considering, contact them on 01344 989938 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk.
are likely to be on a longer lead time) along with sealed units from the glass suppliers to ensure these will fit into the frames that are being specially made. Next, the products then need to be scheduled for production, as most double glazing manufacturers will not have skilled workers standing round. Once the products have been fabricated the installations department will need to confirm up the provisional date they will have hopefully pencilled in with you when you placed your order. Understanding the above process for bespoke fenestration products should set off alarm bells if a double glazing installer says they can supply and fit within a few weeks.
