Welcome to our October issue... Brocket Hall, one of Britain’s top stately homes, is rolling out the red carpet this Christmas. The 18th-century country estate, which is set in more than 500 acres of gracious parkland in Hertfordshire, is ready to party with some special celebrations that are guaranteed to make Christmas go with a swing. After all, Brocket Hall is no stranger to social occasions. The glorious neo-classical redbrick house, with its graceful Palladian bridge, has welcomed visitors down the centuries, including George IV and Queen Victoria. Today, it’s a preferred choice for corporate and private functions - from team-building events to weddings - offering top-quality accommodation and service. Thousands of people braved torrential rain on Sunday to take part in the 7th annual HERTS 10K to raise money for Grove House, part of Rennie Grove Hospice Care. Even though it rained from start to finish, the weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the runners and walkers or the spectators who came out to cheer and encourage participants both along the route and at the finish line. London Fashion Week (LFW) is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. LFW puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. The Hertfordshire Wine School is an independent wine education company offering wine tasting for everyone. They are not tied to any wine merchant or retailer and offer impartial advice, tasting only wines that they believe are good examples of their type. We learn about wine by concentrating on the flavours and aromas of the wines. We look at the wine’s taste profile and understand the characteristics of the grape variety, the climate and the winemaking style. As we do not sell wine we can advise where to buy the best wines locally and at the best prices. We work closely with local independent wine merchants to bring you the best tasting and most interesting wines currently available. Our evening tastings and courses are held in Harpenden, St Albans and Hertford and include a minimum of six wines. Every few weeks on Saturdays we run a daytime tasting at Darcy’s Restaurant in St Albans, which includes Champagne, a three-course lunch and a GET THIS taste of ten different wines.

Inheritance Tax could still threaten your family’s prosperity You may remember the Conservatives were planning to increase the Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold to £1m if they won the General Election.
S
ubsequently, the new Coalition Government shelved it. But if you are thinking that you are unlikely to be affected by IHT, think again.
More and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the last ten years have put paid to that. For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth over £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil band rate. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed onto any of your benefactors during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider, particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee. And with the threshold remaining unchanged by the coalition government until at least 2015 and subject to further legislation the freeze will be extended up to and including the 2017/2018 tax year, more people could get sucked in as the minimum IHT threshold usually increases at a rate equivalent to at least inflation.
David Gibson, Director of David Gibson Wealth Management an Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is concerned that most people do not understand the implications of IHT. “It’s clear that people are confused by IHT policy and many mistakenly believe they are unlikely to be affected by it,” he said. And he is also concerned about a potentially more serious knock-on effect. “A Will* is vital in helping mitigate IHT,” said David. “Without a proper Will, people run the risk of their estate being severely reduced through IHT and also leaving themselves exposed to the ravages of long term care costs later in life. It’s now more important than ever to seek professional advice and establish how you can protect your hard earned assets.” David will be holding no obligation Wealth Preservation Surgeries on 6th November and 6th December at the Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa. If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, or your Local Authority through Long Term Care fees, book your consultation today.
David Gibson Wealth Management is based locally and is inviting Harpenden Life readers to discover the simple yet highly effective steps you can take to protect your wealth and stay in control - helping the right amount of it pass to the right people at the right time. Wealth Preservation Surgeries are being held, strictly by appointment only, on 6th November and 6th December at the Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa. All surgeries last approximately 40 minutes and are held in the strictest confidence without obligation. Call 07769 225982 for more information or your complimentary guide to wealth management.

RAIN DOESN’T DAMPEN SPIRITS OF
HERTS 10K runners
Thousands of people braved torrential rain on Sunday to take part in the 7th annual HERTS 10K to raise money for Grove House, part of Rennie Grove Hospice Care. Even though it rained from start to finish, the weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the runners and walkers or the spectators who came out to cheer and encourage participants both along the route and at the finish line.
T
he race was started by Harpenden’s Paralympian and National Football Museum Hall of Fame inductee David Clarke. David was greeted on stage with huge cheers from the runners. The winner of the race was Michal Glowacki who completed the 10km mixed terrain course in 33 min 54 seconds. Michal also crossed the finish line in first place last year. The winner of the women’s race was Becca Hayden from Welwyn Garden City who finished in 40 mins and 56 seconds. The Mayor of St Albans, Annie Brewster presented the trophies to the first three men and women before returning to the finish line to cheer on participants who were still completing their 10k run. Among the thousands of runners, there were many individual stories of personal successes and achievements. Tabitha Weddell aged 15 from St Albans had never run a 10k race before and was delighted to come 2nd in the women’s race with an impressive time of 41 minutes and 21 seconds. The organisers have tipped her to be a future winner of the event. Many other participants were also running their first 10k race and whilst their finishing times might not have been quite as impressive as Tabitha’s, their delight as they crossed a very muddy finish line was clear to see. One such novice runner, Ian McCreery, was deservedly proud of the money he had raised for Grove House. To date Ian has raised over £1000 in sponsorship and, after telling friends and family about his run in the rain, he expects this total to increase. Debbie Huntley and Jude Robinson, who have been training for the event after winning the Herts Advertiser competition, joined other runners in the pre-race warm up led by Rory, their Fitness First trainer. Debbie said, “It was great fun despite the weather and we are both chuffed to bits that after all the training with Rory and despite our injuries we got round without stopping.” Andy Mallabone, Hannah Wilson-Craigen, Suzy Hope and Una Lodge ran as a team from the new school in town, the Alban City School, which now has 120 children. Una said, “A few of the parents got together to run as a school team for Grove House. Each of us have seen Grove House help people close to us and the community around us. As Alban City School is such a new part of the local community we wanted to do something big as a team, represent the school that we love, and help Grove House. Our fund raising effort is now at £1,030 (still rising). We’d love to do it again next year,
1 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
we’ll have even more parents (and maybe less mud!). And no fun event of this kind would be complete without some whacky costumes which came courtesy of three young lads, Harry Purvis, Hugh Myer and Jacob Savill. The three dressed for the occasion in bright yellow and ran as bananas as part of their celebrations for Jacob’s 18th birthday. Ruth Barber, Events Manager at Rennie Grover said, “The wet conditions today have made the HERTS 10K more challenging than usual. I’m even more humbled than usual to see the number of runners, supporters and volunteers who have turned out to ensure that the event was once again a huge success.” She went on to add, “We are hoping that one positive side of running in the pouring rain is that the friends and family of those taking part will dig a little deeper when it comes to donating money in recognition of their heroic effort on the day.” One runner said afterwards, “This was my favourite year despite the weather! What a beautiful course and a fantastically organised event, I couldn’t fault it!” Ivan Mostyn-Scott summed up the day with his post on Facebook that said “A fantastic run for such a wonderful cause - loved every minute from start to finish - mud, puddles an’ all. Great atmosphere, well organised and the marshals were brilliant. See you next year (rain or shine).” Organisers hope that the event will raise in the region of £150,000, enough to fund five nurses for a year. Gillian Barnett, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at Rennie Grove, said, “We would like to thank everybody who took part in the race either by running or by being one of the army of volunteer helpers. Events like this are a vital part of our fundraising and everyone who braved the rain on Sunday or who has sponsored any of the runners or walkers can be proud of the fact that they have helped provide vital services for patients diagnosed with life-limiting illness and their families in the heart of our local community.”

Success continues as Riverbanks Clinic celebrates its 5th Birthday
K
The multi-award winning ‘out of town’ cosmetic clinic Riverbanks is celebrating its 5th year in business this week.
nown internationally for its outstanding levels of expertise, treatment selection and customer care, the Hertfordshire-based Riverbanks Clinic has continued to attract clients from across the UK and abroad, despite being ‘out in the sticks’ compared to many of the London-based clinics. However, it seems the tranquil settings of East Hyde have done nothing but strengthen their offering. Riverbanks Clinic offers a range of treatments including the highly respected VASER, CoolTech and MedContour but also houses state of the art facilities for treating more common cosmetic ailments such as facial veins, rosacea and acne.
About Dr Ravi Jain Dr Jain’s expertise and ethical approach to all of the treatments he provides, has resulted in being highly sought after not only by patients but also by several of the aesthetic pharmacological & device companies.
The team of experts at Riverbanks Clinic only offer treatments that they know provide the best results for their clients, resulting in a high level of trust for the treatments on offer. It is this transparent service, open and honest feedback and that fact that the clinic has yet to receive a negative review, that speak volumes and have helped bring in a steady flow of business, most of which has been the result of referrals and recommendations.
Dr Jain has also been recognised as a consultant to QMED-Galderma UK (who produce Azzalure, Botulinum toxin & Emervel & Restylane.) Due to his excellent results and extensive experience, Sound Surgical Technologies (Vaser) called upon Dr Jain to develop a European wide VASER training programme for all doctors wishing to introduce VASER into their practice. As a result, Dr Jain now trains new Vaser doctors in UK and Europe.
Known to have the odd celebrity or two pass through its doors, Riverbanks Clinic has been featured in the prestigious Tatler Beauty & Cosmetic Surgery Guide to 2012 and its founder, Dr Ravi Jain, is a respected beauty industry consultant, speaker and international trainer.
Riverbanks Clinic is often used by Sound Surgical Technologies as a show centre for doctors, as they feel that Dr Jain’s facilities set high standards for a VASER environment and doctors often travel from around the world.
Reflecting on the success of the clinic to date, Dr Jain comments, “Opening the clinic in East Hyde was the start of what has been an amazing journey for Riverbanks Clinic and one that shows no sign of slowing down. We’ve continued to grow year on year and have introduced some amazing treatments, as well as opened a consultancy clinic in Harley Street. I am really proud of what the team have achieved and their dedication is reflected in the strength of our business as we reach our fifth birthday.” About Riverbanks Clinic The flagship Riverbanks Clinic is set in a leafy and tranquil riverside spot in East Hyde, just outside Harpenden. This pretty Georgian building has been extensively renovated to create light, fresh surroundings, with wooden flooring and a homely, organic feel. You’ll be looked after in treatment areas boasting state-of-the-art technology, using proven cutting-edge procedures. Their values are traditional and informal, affording you as much privacy as you need in an environment that is relaxed, friendly and – above all – professional. They also offer consulting locations in Harley Street and Braintree. 1 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
In 2007 he was invited to join the medical advisory board for Sculptra (Sanofi-Aventis) and has been an active trainer and board member since then. He was responsible for developing the current training guidelines for new practitioners wishing to introduce Sculptra into their practice.
In 2011, Dr Alfredo Hoyos, the innovator of Vaser High Definition Liposculpture, invited Dr Jain to the faculty of The Interntional Centre of Artistic Body Sculpting (IC:ABS), and appointed Riverbanks as the only centre in the world to school the Dynamx Basic & Advanced Vaser training courses for doctors. Dr Jain’s passion for excellence extends developing the speciality of aesthetic medicine and as such he is a faculty member for the Masters degree in Cosmetic Medicine at Greenwich University. In 2011, he was invited to become the President for The Society of Cosmetic Physicians and Surgeons. Dr Jain continues to work extensively with the media, being featured in Elle, The Daily Mail, The Mirror, The Daily Express, Company Magazine, Top Sante, Red, Glamour, BBC Radio, Living TV, Channel 4’s “Embarrassing Bodies”, Best Magazine, Woman’s Own, Slim at Home, Saga and MSN Style. And the team promise to make guests feel special from the moment they step over the historic threshold, with a package that includes a glass of Prosecco or mulled wine on arrival by one of the cosy, open fires, a three-course dinner, and dancing to the tracks of a DJ. The Oak Room at the Golf Club -whose glass walls provide stunning panoramic views of the grounds - will also be dressed to party. Other innovative events this season include a virtual chef’s table at Auberge du Lac, created in collaboration with Cloudy Bay Vineyards. Meanwhile, golfers can book special Winter Warmer deals on the hall’s Melbourne and Palmerston championship golf courses. The special days, for groups of 12 to 120 guests, feature a round of golf, use of the golf academy, prize competitions, plus bacon rolls and a two-course buffet. Every few weeks on Saturdays we run a daytime tasting at Darcy’s Restaurant in St Albans, which includes Champagne, a three-course lunch and a taste of ten different wines. The tastings and courses are, above all, fun and entertaining and set in a relaxed atmosphere. They are seated, and tutored, and usually include visual aids and notes. Professional ISO tasting glasses are provided and no previous wine tasting experience is required. Our guests come by themselves, in couples or in larger groups and it is also a great way to meet others with the same interest in tasting and learning about wine. We also run corporate and professional tastings and have recently done so for Marks & Spencer, North Hertfordshire College and Gonzalez-Byass UK. Hertfordshire Wine School is an Approved Programme Provider of Wine & Spirit Education Trust Courses. WSET Level 1 and 2 Wine & Spirit Courses are Government-accredited qualifications aimed, in equal measure, at wine enthusiasts and those working in the drinks, retail or hospitality sectors. Metamorphic
Jewellery
Inspecting a piece of jewellery for the first time can be very rewarding. There is the fine workmanship to admire, the fire of high quality gemstones and maybe a famous signature or maker’s mark.
S
ometimes there is more. A welldisguised clip, catch or slide reveals that this piece can be disassembled to allow it to be worn in a number of ways. This is known as ‘Metamorphic Jewellery’ – literally, jewellery that changes form and it a fascinating area that showcases the engineering ingenuity of the jewellery as much as the stones and metal that the piece contains. Often the fitted box is a give-away. Nestled in the velvet next to the main jewel sits and oddly shaped pin or a bracket and some screws, all in their own compartment. So the hunt then begins for the cleverly hidden ways in which the main piece might come apart. The concept of multi-functional jewellery
2 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
has been around a long time, and can be as simple as threading a chain through the back of a brooch to wear it as a necklace. The more complex, elaborate pieces became popular in the Victorian era. The newly wealthy mercantile classes did not have the range of family jewels available to the nobility and so metamorphic jewellery allowed them to get more out of the pieces that they had turning a tiara into a necklace and earrings or a necklace into a bracelet and brooch. The Art Deco period saw this trend increased. Stiff formality was on the wane and jewellery became more adaptable and ultimately more wearable. The famous Parisian jewellery houses of Cartier, Chaumet and Van Cleef
& Arpels all created metamorphic suites allowing imposing tiaras or necklaces to break down into smaller components. In 1939 Van Cleef & Arpels patented one of the most flexible and versatile pieces ever – their ‘Passe-Partout’ or ‘go anywhere’, This was a length of gold tubogas with two flower clips and a clever rail system that allowed the jewel to be worn as a bracelet, choker, necklace, sautoir, or belt and the clips as brooches or earrings. In Fellows’ Antique and Modern Jewellery auction on 7th November we have two impressive examples of metamorphic jewellery. Pictured opposite is a diamond necklace with a centrepiece that can be detached and worn as a brooch. We are also offering a pair of earrings that can be worn as either studs, larger florets or as showstopping chandeliers.

IT’S LITERARY FESTIVAL TIME AN EXPLORER, A TRAVEL WRITER AND A FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT- WHAT DO THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON? WELL, APART FROM THE FACT THEY HAVE SPENT A LARGE PART OF THEIR LIVES ABROAD - THEY ARE ALL APPEARING AT THE CHORLEYWOOD LITERARY FESTIVAL!
S
ir Ranulph Fiennes, Bill Bryson and Kate Adie are among the headliners at Chorleywood Bookshop's better-than-ever- 8th annual LitFest. And if this wasn't enough, there are more than 20 authors appearing over the course of the festival, beginning on November 6th with Fiennes and ending on the 21st with Bryson. In between there are actors, politicians, food writers, journalists, tycoons and campaigners lined up to both surprise and fascinate. So if you were under the impression that literary festivals were rather snooty affairs aimed exclusively at the very well read and erudite it’s time to come along and find out for yourself just how lively, fun and interesting they can be. The organisers have been keeping some of the big names under wraps but it’s now time to reveal the full programme. The opening event is with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, probably the greatest explorer ever. He has visited the coldest places on earth – the poles and the highest mountains – and his new book Cold covers those places. Following on Sir Ranulph Fiennes heels comes yet another Sir- Sir Terry Wogan will be talking about his new book Something for the Weekend, a collection of his best columns from The Daily Telegraph from the past 10 years. No doubt Sir Terry, one of Britain’s most popular entertainers both on TV and radio, will enthral us with his distinctively dry and amusing views on life. Sir Terry also happens to be an enormous fan of the next LitFest headliner David Suchet. Sir Terry has written in his column about how much he and his wife love Poirot, the TV series that made David Suchet’s name. Agatha Christie’s Poirot is shown in 76 countries and dubbed into over 30 languages. The show has been running since 1989 and in his book, Poirot and Me, Suchet who has become inextricably linked with ‘the little Belgian’, shares his many 2 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
memories of creating this iconic TV series. If you’re not interested in fictional figures then perhaps the next author will inspire you. Former politician Douglas Hurd has co-written a book about the most gifted parliamentarian of the nineteenth century, Benjamin Disraeli. Douglas Hurd served Margaret Thatcher as Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary and not only is he already a highly acclaimed biographer he has also written a number of thrillers. Author Anne De Courcy is also a biographer but at the Lit Fest she will be talking about her brilliant new book The Fishing Fleet, Husband Hunting in the Raj. From the late 19th century, when the Raj was at its height, many of Britain’s young men went to India to work . Suffering at the lack of eligible men in Britain, countless young women followed in their wake with the goal of hooking a husband and they became known as The Fishing Fleet. De Courcy has drawn on unpublished memoirs, letters and
diaries to bring this forgotten era vividly to life. There are more history lessons to be had from Kate Adie who will be talking about Fighting on the Home Front and Elizabeth Mayhew who pays homage to the courage of the men and women who cared for the hundreds of thousands of British soldiers who were wounded at the Western Front . The weekend of the 16 and 17th November feature the festival highlights . There’s a huge variety to choose from- from breakfast storytime, talks about self -publishing, revelations from behind the scenes at Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife (chk), and recipes from chef and best- selling food writer Allegra McEvedy and Bake-Off ’s Mary-Anne Boermans. There are a number of events that will have particular appeal to girls-in fact they’re a must for all women! Hadley Freeman has written Be Awesome- Modern Life for Modern Ladies and, rather more controversially, Melissa Ben, a writer, campaigner and mother of two has written an extraordinary book called What Should We Tell Our Daughters? The Pleasures and Pressures of Growing Up Female. This is essential reading for every parent who has ever had to comfort a daughter who doesn’t feel ‘pretty’ and for every woman who out performs her male peers and wonders why she is still not taken seriously. Dame Stephanie Shirley knows exactly how this feels. In her moving and inspiring memoir she tells the amazing story of how she made a fortune in a man’s world and then gave it all away! The festival ends with something of a travelling theme. Ben Hatch, author of Are We Nearly There Yet? 8,000 Miles Round Britain in a Vauxhall Astra, talks about his latest book, Road to Rouen: A 10,000Mile Journey in a cheese-filled Passat. And in a little less light hearted fashion best selling travel writer Bill Bryson takes us back to One Summer - America 1927. Investing in your home
It’s often said that the biggest capital outlay you’ll ever make is in buying your home, so it makes complete sense to want to make the most out of this important asset.
I
magine, you wouldn’t get ready for a special night out and then wear jeans and a T-shirt – the same can be said for how you dress your home. Compromising by buying posters from Ikea may fill a space, but will ultimately leave you wishing you’d taken the time to identify some quality works for your home.
So you’ve never heard of the artist before, who cares? As the old saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the same applies with art. There’s often a tendency to be guided by what

others might think of your selection, and thus how you might be judged. Follow your heart, and you’ll never go wrong. As German gallerist Matthias Arndt expresses “only buy art that touches you emotionally, but also consider pieces against which you reacted badly at first. Afterwards, those are the pieces that will become relevant and have the highest value in the end”. How do I know if it’s a good buy? Investing in known names is invariably a safer bet, but having

OK I really want to find some art now - Where should I seek out works? The last ten years have seen the emergence of a number of high profile art events, such as The Affordable Arts Fair, Frieze and Art Basel to name a few. It has proven a practical way of seeing lots of artists’ work in a short space of time. Identifying artwork that you will want to live with for many years will take multiple viewings though, which is why working with a physical gallery works best. Besides, many of the services they offer (e.g. bringing artwork to your home so you can view in situ) would not be possible at an art fair.
the courage to look further afield at newer artists should pay dividends. All successful artists had to begin somewhere, and acquiring works earlier in an artist’s career will ensure you acquire strong pieces at a fair price. As David Stevenson from The Financial Times commented “Buying emerging art is the equivalent of investing in frontier market equities. Rather than buying the global names that appear in the big auctions of the best galleries, you invest in the artistic equivalent of Mongolia or Cambodia : the young artists coming out of MA programmes” Working with a trusted and respected gallery also ensures that they’ve done a large part of the due diligence for you – they’ve already taken the time to vet the artist, and to assess their credibility alongside many other artists.

Hampstead Arts Festival is proud to announce its 2013 music programme 29th SEPTEMBER - 3rd DECEMBER 2013
L
The Hampstead Arts Festival will host some of the finest musicians in the world performing in two wonderful Hampstead venues.
aunched in 2012 to replace the former Hampstead & Highgate Festival, the Hampstead Arts Festival (HAF) has already forged a reputation for presenting outstanding musicians and programmes. Whilst retaining the local knowledge and connections of the festival it replaced, HAF has new trustees, new artistic direction, a fresh focus and an exciting and ambitious programme for autumn 2013. One of the highlights of this year’s programme is a performance of Zemlinsky’s String Quartet cycle by the internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet. The work, rarely heard in its entirety, will be performed in a series of concerts pairing Zemlinsky with quartets by old masters: Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Mozart. Another highlight will be a performance of Bach’s complete Sonatas & Partitas for unaccompanied violin by the young American rising star, Tai Murray. HAF is also delighted to welcome a string ensemble from the outstanding North York Moors Festival (NYMF), including Brit award winning violinist Jack Liebeck, NYMF founder and director Jamie Walton and celebrated cellist Guy Johnston. The chamber group will perform Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence and Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht. The festival will be capped by two wonderful recitals by young British superstars. The soprano Sophie Bevan, one of the most sought-after names in classical music at the moment, will take a break from the great opera stages to make a rare appearance singing lieder. Sophie will be accompanied by pianist Sebastian Wybrew. Jazz pianist extraordinaire Gwilym Simcock, in a joint production with the London Jazz Festival, will be making his only solo recital appearance of the London season. The Festival trustees aim to draw on a strong tradition of the Arts in North London, competing with some of the most renowned music festivals and
3 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
venues in the UK, yet giving a fresh and unique perspective to their events. Venues for this year’s concerts are the lovely 18th century Hampstead Parish Church, the scene of historic recordings by the Amadeus Quartet, and the spectacular Grade 1 listed St Stephen’s on Haverstock Hill, recently unveiled after a multi-million pound restoration. The Music Director of Hampstead Arts Festival, Eric Usadi, began his adult life as a violinist after studying at The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, before spending 25 years as a research physicist. Now a trustee of the festival, Eric says of the programming: ‘Some of the finest musicians in the world will be performing a unique blend of repertoire to be heard nowhere else in London this season, presented in two of Hampstead’s crown jewel venues. We look forward to welcoming avid music lovers from both Hampstead and elsewhere in the city.’ He is joined by Jesper Groenvold, a retired business executive who focuses on the Arts through his activities in the charitable sector and collection of art. Jesper discusses the Festival as ‘a relative newcomer, excited to present this program, which brings the quality of the major London music spaces to NW London, while allowing the musicians the freedom to be more adventurous in their programming. We hope to build on the success of last year and increase our core audience.’ Hampstead Arts Festival will also host a series of discussions with leading figures in the arts and politics. Stay tuned for the public announcement of this series shortly. With a diverse, unique and attractive programme, internationally admired musicians and a continually strengthening local profile, this year’s Hampstead Arts Festival promises to be very eagerly anticipated. www.hampsteadartsfestival.com

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREPARE MY CHILD FOR SCHOOL? WORDS BY HELEN DALKIN MRS DALKIN IS ASSISTANT HEAD, BEECHWOOD PARK SCHOOL AND HEAD OF ITS JUNIOR DEPARTMENT
“How can I prepare my child for school?” A question I am regularly asked by parents. As the Head of a Pre-prep, parents are expecting my response to be firmly centred on academic preparation and are surprised when I advise them ‘play with your child’. ‘Playing with our children’ has almost become outmoded in our busy 21st century lives, and it is frequently outsourced to either schools or to clubs. Yet it is from our parents that we learn about our family’s core values and upon parents that a child bases its behaviours. Playing with our children models such behaviours as turn-taking, social interaction, it develops language skills (listening and speaking), it helps to develop a child’s self-esteem and also its emotional and social responses. Children learn how their behaviour impacts upon others. Playing with our children ultimately shapes the adult which they become. Children are growing up in an age where electronic media is displacing parenting; it is easy to find an ‘app’ which teaches a child number sequencing in a lively, fast moving,’ light and sound show’, rather than to have to battle with inanimate pieces of jigsaw; the boredom of a tediously long car journey is much easier with the in-car DVD rather than monotonous games of ‘I spy’. Children sleep in technology-rich bedrooms and our homes, cars and pockets are filled with smartphones, computers, TVs etc. As adults we have to embrace the technology around us and allow our children to do likewise, as this is part of the growing child’s world, but we must not negate the unique position which every parent has in shaping their child’s development. Parents in the UK work longer hours than they have ever done. The age of parenting now commences far later than it did 20 years ago, and mothers are having their ‘first born’ at an older age too. As parents our lives have moved on from those of our parents, but the needs of a child have remained the same; they have not changed. Children still require authoritative parents, who apply discipline with consistency, alongside being warm, loving, receptive care-givers. Thus resulting in children having greater self-esteem and self-discipline, something which 3 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
‘the media’ constantly reminds us is lacking in the youth of today. It is all too easy to compensate the ‘guilt’ which we feel for spending insufficient time with our children, by allowing them to continue watching the TV or enjoy a computer game rather than entering into the exhausting battle of sticking to rules and boundaries; yet these provide children with security. As parents we have the responsibility of allowing our children access to electronic media whilst preventing its misuse. We need to: Reduce exposure time Set limits Review access and availability. E nsure that our interaction with electronic media provides a good role model to our children. If we restrict the time children have access to electronic media, then time will be created to play with our children. Time in which parents and children can share simple games (promoting number skills, turn taking, developing the emotions of winning and losing), learning to ride a bike or kick a ball, (co-ordination) participating in role play scenarios – such as shops or hospitals (developing conversation and listening skills, problem-solving and emotional interaction/reaction). The list goes on. This is the preparation which children need before they enter the primary classroom. Increasingly children are finding playtimes more difficult because they have not learnt how to create ‘make believe play’, or how to interact with others. They have grown used to flicking from one ‘app’ to another; at school we need them to maintain their level of application. And sadly, because children are spending more time with electronic media and less time playing with adults, they are less used to reading the emotional signals of others, thus resulting in children having a greater tendency to offer an inappropriate response. It is through play that children learn. Give your child the best start to their formal education by ensuring that your child has had the opportunity to play with you.

ondon Fashion Week (LFW) is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. LFW puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m;
the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven’t got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. 62 catwalk shows and 20 presentations took place across the 5 days. The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists’ cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe, with international press attending from 42 countries. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our Winter wardrobes, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/Summer Collections during last month’s London Fashion Week. London Fashion Week was a roaring success. This season saw big-name guests like Anna Wintour, Kate Moss and Harry Styles dominate the front rows. Top designers – including Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood and Manolo Blahnik – showcased their designs and newer names, including Fashion East’s rising stars Ashley Williams, Claire Barrow and Ryan Lo made their mark with punchy, memorable shows. London Fashion Week is a dazzling showcase of great British talent,” said Mayor of London Boris Johnson. “Its significance has been growing over the last few years, with strong attendance by press and buyers from around the world. With Natalie Massenet now at the helm, her eye for fashion and innovative ideas about selling will ensure it goes from strength to strength and inspire future 12 8 O C TOBE R R 2 20 01 13 3 4
generations to seek out jobs in this vibrant and creative sector. As well as investing in London Fashion Week, I will continue to do all I can to support the industry, which is so important to our city’s prosperity.’’ You’d have been forgiven for thinking you’d stepped into the Autumn/Winter shows as London Fashion Week took over the capital once more; dark palettes, heavy-duty fabrics, longer cuts and geometric prints for spring and summer replaced the usual suspects of saccharine brights, ethereal materials, barelythere lengths and all-out florals. Though some requisite summer touches - think lace, think florals, think sunny hues - did break through, the spring/summer catwalks held onto a decidedly, well, wintery feel. A subversive undercurrent ran through collections at Tom Ford, Simone Rocha and Giles with rips, zips and moody concoctions of black, grey and browns. Even the king of summer, Christopher Kane, turned the dial on his collection, offering florals with a sociopolitical undertone (diagrams on flowers were used to highlight the inadequacies of sex education). And the anarchical theme continued as traditionally autumnal boxy tops, sheeny metallics, brocade and leather made unapologetic appearances . Though prints were out in force, 2013’s flowers and heady neon splices made way for geometric touches, spots, lines and checks. But it wasn’t all dark and stormy; a hint
S HUI O FFA E AT RN E
of summer came in the form of gorgeous cheeriness at Roksanda Ilincic and Tata Naka: a palette of sunny brights alongside playful patterns provided a welcome respite from the autumnal feel of the shows. Yellow, a key colour for the season, also warmed up the L’Wren Scott and Thomas Tait collections. BORA AKSU London Fashion Week opened with brilliant brights from Bora Aksu to bring some colour to a dreary London day. There were dolllike dresses, made from a patchwork of fabrics and patterns in yellow and blue. The high collars and cinched-in waists adding to the dainty vibe of the collection.Blue paisley patterns were dotted throughout, on playsuits, edging white blazers and decorating the hem-lines of circle skirts, and lace and sheer materials were the fabric of choice. A colourful start to LFW!

runway. Rosella Jardini, the creative director for Moschino, brought new meaning to the word punk. Her use of texture and graphics created a neo-punk trend that’s here to stay. She a fi wlessly combined glamour and risk with wearability, without ever losing the edge that makes Moschino such a fashion forward brand. The models were laden with either black lipstick or just enough black eye shadow to make you believe that they actually listen to the Sex Pistols and secretly identify with an alternative punk subculture. Alas, Jardini’s touch of refinement and femininity managed to maintain an ambience of high fashion and elegance that is ever present throughout London Fashion Week. JASPER CONRAN For their Spring/Summer 2014 Collection, Jasper Conran bring a starched collar which embodies the clean-lined approach. Pure white and navy injected with solid statements of lemon, streamlined – in form, colour and pattern. Trompe l’oeil beadwork over sheer layers, mixed with fine guage striped silk knits, hand-blocked prints and full skirts. A softening of attitude. Dahlia lace, applique blooms and wirework leaves in textural white, dressed-up for day in cotton pique and pristine linen Fondant coloured prints on the lightest organza –simply pretty! Holiday tones of pink grapefruit, sunny yellow, grass green and sea blue. Cotton dressing – the bandeau, a tailored short, a simple sundress. Bold graphic prints always set against cooling white. Abstract architectural details decorate flowing georgette, in full length layered columns. TEMPERLEY LONDON Perhaps the polar opposite to Moschino’s show, Temperley London was all about the romance. With beautiful fabrics, o fi ral embellishment and decorative pieces, Alice Temperley served up a dish of British elegance at its n fi est, with a fi ttering silhouettes and a delicateness that’s not often seen at runway shows anymore. Although Temperley’s collection brought London back to the classic elegance associated with the city. Playing with texture and print, the collection took o fi ral that may have otherwise been mistaken as your grandmother’s curtains and transformed it into a collection perfectly tfi for an English tea party.

PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND Pringle of Scotland is the iconic brand founded in 1815 at the birthplace of the Scottish knitwear industry. Their spring/ summer 2014 womenswear collection embraces contrasting influences to create unexpected juxtapositions; graphic panels are offset with elliptical seams, structural couture fabrics are paired with relaxed knitted elements, and sharp silhouettes are gathered to create volume. The brand’s iconic argyle diamonds are used as a thematic thread that evolves throughout the collection, rooting the designs in the brand’s heritage but offering fresh treatments and techniques to transformative effect. Intarsia twinsets feature diamonds entwined together to resemble the mesh of fencing, whilst woven jacquards in porcelain blue and white present diamonds with varying placements and scales and knitted jacquards showcase fragmented argyles that are overlaid with hand beading for textural detail. this tactile interpretation is further developed through a raised argyle knitted sleeveless sweater with hand knit trim. the geometric grid patterns intrinsic to argyle are then realised through a fine lace stitch knit, which is then replicated through macramé that ranges in scale from delicate panels on skirts and bomber jackets, to a more structured oversized macramé
t-shirt and skirt. the open weave of macramé provides inspiration for an open slash stitch knit dress in electric blue worn as a twinset with matching cardigan, and a knitted silk dress combines macramé and pointelle across exaggerated fully fashioned seams. a game of opposites is explored through the combination of textures used on one garment; couture silk sits with knitted jersey and macramé on a bomber jacket and skirt. this opposition can also be seen in the use of exaggerated contrast colours and trims; an off white leather vest with knitted back is enlivened with bright geranium leather sides, and an electric blue/ navy bomber features contrasting white leather piping. the use of these contradictory colours and materials makes for a collection that is both tough and feminine, pairing the ease and flow of knitwear with the structure and formality of couture fabrics. BURBERRY PRORSUM Burberry Prorsum showed its womenswear Spring/Summer 2014 collection, ‘English Rose’, in London’s Hyde Park. Guests included Sienna Miller, Harry Styles, Paloma Faith, Alexa Chung, Poppy Delevingne and Donna Air. The show was also a celebration of Burberry Beauty, as the first womenswear show since the brand brought the category in house. The Spring/Summer 2014 makeup look and next season’s Burberry Nails collection were unveiled: six nail colours, launching in January 2014.

PAUL SMITH The Paul Smith collection was mainly based on roomy, semi-seventies shapes with the brand’s signature men’s tailoring. Easygoing colours like cornflower blue, black, white and buttercup sent a message of ‘chillout -and-have fun’. A particular favourite was an easy-to-style button-down peach dress in lightweight fabric with sensual drapes – it was a dress that stood out all on its own, no accessories needed. MULBERRY Emma Hill certainly pulled out all the stops for her final show as creative director of Mulberry in the Spring 2014 collection shown at London
Fashion Week. The collection varied in prints, textures, shapes and colour, and was beautiful through and through. From sixties inspired prints to sporty silhouettes and all-white ensembles there was nothing that wasn’t executed perfectly. We also saw bold prints on minimalist shapes, a hint of sheer coming through on a broad stripe and leather worn on leather. The show was also the debut of the new Mulberry handbag, the Kensal. With all this in mind, the Mulberry show was everything a girl could wish for in a final farewell. ASHISH Sequins galore! What else would you expect from an Ashish show? They were everywhere,
from jeans to bags. As well as sequins, we saw the Coca Cola logo cropping up over and over again, on tees trown over ripped sequin trousers, for a totally glam-grunge look that seemed thrown together in the coolest of ways. We loved the rainbow sequined trousers and the zebra and leopard print dress, and the best thing about the show was the DIY feel to all of it. Pass the sequins please! MATTHEW WILLIAMSON Matthew Williamson’s show teetered between business and boho, there was sharp tailoring which contrasted with billowing floral maxi dresses. The style was distinctly grown up, and the prints were hand-painted rather than computer generated, and we love the orange and pink floral jumpsuit! The day-wear was sharp and chic, with tailored trousers and midi-length floral dresses going strong, and the evening dresses took us back to classic Matthew Williamson style, chiffon gowns in floral and dragonfly prints. HOUSE OF HOLLAND House of Holland is a show everyone looks forward to – and it didn’t disappoint! Girly dresses were toughened up with caps and huge sunnies for a dash of London edge. Print-wise, gingham prevailed, in contrasting blues and reds, they stole the show and made a bold, bright statement – what more would you expect from Henry? The feminine dresses were mixed up with amazing printed trousers and graphic tees for a more casual look – they’re already on our wishlist for next season! CHRISTOPHER KANE Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking’… Despite Miranda Priestly’s quip in The Devil Wear’s Prada, to the gifted mind of Christopher Kane there are in fact ways to make spring florals groundbreaking. Kane took various

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD RED LABEL Vivienne Westwood always puts on a show at London Fashion Week. Her S/S14 collection opened with Lily Cole, dressed in a floorlength gown and wildhaired, performing a dance based on the fairy tale “The Red Shoes”. After the performance, came the clothes, and Westwood showed us her trademark draped tailoring, on structured coats and jackets – Spring still calls for outwear with London weather! The artistic, floral print, smudged on dresses and jumpsuits that
were tied at the knees with scarves, and the paint-like elements seeped into the beauty look - each model walked out with white make up painted over their faces and legs – described by Vivienne as “like an animal trapped in the headlights”. JOHN ROCHA For Spring Summer 2014 John Rocha weaves a narrative of grace and femininity, a tale of contemporary elegance and hard-edged romance. The palette, grounded in broken whites and ivories and all the textures of black, brings surprises with shots of scarlet and fuchsia and blossoms of lemon, violet, emerald and indigo. The silhouette moves through beautifully structured volumes that are at once pure and sharply sweet, to slim extended lines that skim the form and a linear silhouette that drapes to suggest a darker sophistication. Throughout the collection John’s abiding love of texture and
embellishment is focused in densely worked surfaces, each piece creating an individual expression. Silk organza is scattered with couched georgette and yarn blossoms, or hand sculpted petals and blooms. Sheer georgette is satin stitched in trellises that trace the form, or flounced in raw edged layers and countered with glazed and lacquered laces. Extraordinary forms are intricately crafted from twists and loops of organza piping. Yet, there is a seeming weightlessness throughout, a lightness that informs the collection. As always with John’s work there is a duality, a counterbalance between the tender and the strong the tough and the romantic. We can now look forward to the trends that will be hitting the high streets for Spring/ Summer 2014, and re-create the look on the catwalk! London Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including Canon Europe current headline sponsor for seven consecutive seasons). London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. www.londonfashionweek.co.uk

parts of the female flower’s anatomy and translated them into innovative details on contemporary shapes. A modernised and streamlined petal-shaped motif was repeatedly used on everything from sweatshirts to cocktail dresses. Trendwise the collection featured pastels and pleating, sheer and holographic elements. The application of details set it apart from other offerings at London Fashion Week, for instance the three holographic looks were made up of multi-coloured fabrics which frayed slightly at the edges reinforcing their natural fibre and injecting a bit of science into the collection. There was some schoolboy angst too, with floral textbook diagrams used as a print in various sizes and on various items.

e all know that we should make exercise a priority every day but often it gets pushed to the bottom of our ‘to do’ lists despite what we know about its positive contribution to our complete wellbeing. In fact, recent research by Champneys, which was conducted for its Wellbeing Report as part of National Spa Awareness Week in November (visit www.champneys.com for a copy of the full report), shows that more than one in ten of us see the main benefit of exercise as helping to relieve stress and over a third of us acknowledge the benefit of exercise to manage our weight. So just what can we do to help make exercise a more regular part of our weekly routines? Louise Day, Wellbeing Director at Champneys, says “It’s important to choose exercise that you actually enjoy as it helps boost motivation which is essential for getting any exercise routine going. If you find it difficult fitting exercise into your

lifestyle, try starting your day with a 30-minute workout to get maximum results in minimum time. “Start your day by getting off the bus or train a stop early and walk the rest of the way. Once you’re in the office clock up a little more exercise and instead of emailing colleagues, get up and walk over to see them - this will also help improve mental alertness and your memory, too!” CHAMPNEYS HEALTH CLUB

The Ultimate Facial We visit Riverbanks Clinic to try Hydrafacial, a red carpet treatment that your skin won’t soon forget.
W
here would you first look if you’re after some TLC for your skin, and a little relaxation along the way? A spa perhaps? A salon? We’re always looking for ways to keep our skin youthful, clear and protected against the effects of urban life. But as pampering and unwinding as these skin and beauty treatments can be, the visual results that they reveal can be just a little underwhelming. Fortunately, a new contender has entered the ring in the fight against a dull, lackluster complexion. It’s called Hydrafacial, a remarkable treatment that’s as relaxing as any in-spa facial. But, instead, this one takes place at Riverbanks award winning cosmetic clinic in Harpenden. Dr. Ravi Jain, & his team of skin experts have brought vibrancy and confidence to their customers through a range of non-surgical aesthetic treatments since 2008. Hydrafacial is a lunchtime pick-me-up treatment that has already turned a flurry of A-list celebrities into devoted fans, including Paris Hilton, Beyonce and Marie Osmond. Riverbanks’ many clients often travel across the country to be treated by their team. They love that their facial lines, wrinkles and brown spots have diminished, whilst pores and skin tone have become clearer, even and more defined. That’s got to make any woman curious at the very least, so I was excited when I made a lunchtime appointment to visit Natalie - an aesthetician at Riverbanks who is known by their staff and many clients as “The Hydrafacial Queen”. Don’t be fooled by any preconceptions you might have about clinics when you first visit Riverbanks. The atmosphere was warmer and more welcoming than most would expect. I was greeted by soothing music, and Natalie, as I lay down on their treatment bed ready for my first Hydrafacial. But here’s where the similarities between a spa and clinic end. At Riverbanks, you are in the hands of experts, who know exactly what it takes to recover the skin from the damage caused by stress, environment and, of course, wearing makeup. They can use Hydrafacial to improve wrinkles, sun damage, acne and your overall skin condition, often from the very first session. Most beauty salons and spas know how to relax you, but rarely do they offer skin health expertise at such a high, medically-proven calibre.
4 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
As I was guided through the treatment by Natalie, I was already in anticipation of how my skin would look or feel after the first session. Each treatment is tailored to your individual skin condition, and so Riverbanks include a free skin review, to find out which parts of the Hydrafacial package will really have your skin gleaming. So how does Hydrafacial work? The machine’s handpiece effectively turns several individual treatments into one convenient course. After removing excess fluids from the skin through lymphatic drainage, the therapist then exfoliates and vacuums away old cells and impurities, to reveal a fresh, new layer of skin, and rid you of any annoying and persistent blackheads. Following a mild peel, which helps to stimulate new skin growth, the skin is bathed in antioxidants which protect the skin from the effects of ageing and hyaluronic serum which leaves you with plump, fully hydrated skin. The final step is red light LED (light emitting diode) therapy to stimulate new collagen production and further improve the health of the skin. After just one session, my face and neck both looked and felt thoroughly rejuvenated and refreshed. But Hydrafacial isn’t just intended as a one-off experience. Keeping your skin in good health is as important as keeping your body in good shape, so regular visits are highly recommended. Riverbanks offer a “Skin Health for Life” series of treatment sessions, based on your budget, to ensure that you always have vibrant, healthy looking skin. Fortunately, it’s affordable too, and the results are testament to what great value a few sessions can be, compared to ordinary facials. It can even be combined with Riverbanks other skin treatments to improve deeper wrinkles, alongside other signs of ageing. If you’re a fan of facials, and if you’ve got a dull and tired looking complexion or problem skin, I’d highly recommend having at least one Hydrafacial to see the difference for yourself. Call Riverbanks on 01582762877 now to book in with your skin care coach.

Husband and wife team targets commuters with new dental practice in Bushey A husband and wife team have launched a new dental practice in Bushey, offering flexible opening hours to target the commuter market.
S
ituated in Brunel Court in Bushey, Caspian Dental Clinic is less than two minutes’ walk from Bushey Station and will be open until 7pm every evening, with later appointments available on request. Owner Sepehr Djadidian and his wife and principal dental surgeon Kimia Mirzakhani hope to tap into a significant niche in the market place, offering the complete range of general and cosmetic dentistry to busy commuters needing the convenience of an appointment on their way home. And with well over a decade of private and NHS dentistry experience, allied to her husband’s knowledge as an IT consultant, Kimia is confident of providing an exceptional quality, professional and friendly service. Kimia’s own field of interest is in restorative dentistry – managing diseases in teeth and gums and looking after their repair and rehabilitation. But she is qualified in the full range of techniques, enhancing her qualifications with regular courses at the Eastman Dental Hospital in North London. The new business has been many years in the making and is something Kimia, aged 39, wanted to do ever since she started practicing dentistry in the UK in 1999. And when she began working at the Longlands NHS practice in Hemel Hempstead in 2003, feedback from patients suggested there was an opportunity to set up a practice which opened at different times of the day. When Brunel Court was built and the premises became available, 42-year-old Sepehr and Kimia decided the time was right to launch the

business. Mum-of-two Kimia said: “This practice is like our third baby. We tried to buy a surgery in Watford in 2003 but it didn’t happen, then we had our second child and the idea was put to one side. “But now that our youngest child has started school, and with the new business opportunity arising in such an ideal location, it seemed like the right time to go ahead. It’s a real sense of pride and joy to have my own practice. We know that the road ahead is going to be hard to get the practice to take off but the business is looking really exciting.” The couple are also employing a young dental nurse, 21-year-old Amelia Davidge from Hemel Hempstead, who Kimia hopes will be integral to the future of the business. She said: “Amelia is taking her dental hygiene course next summer and we have plans to eventually offer an even broader range of services.” “My vision and mission for my practice is a utopian model practice, where the patients enjoy taking part in the making decisions and achieving their goals for their oral health in a friendly, open, transparent and stress-free environment. Our ambition is to set up a second surgery here but for now, everything is in place and we are looking forward to the future.” For more information on Caspian Dental Clinic, or to book an appointment, visit www.caspiandentalclinic.com or call the practice on 01923 254979.

The Fit Lab, St Albans claims to be ‘the gym that works for you’, here Stuart Best, the founder and principle trainer at The Fit Lab tells us why it is focused on natural and functional movement techniques and the reasons why it is becoming the destination of choice for fitness fans across Hertfordshire. Q
We understand The Fit Lab isn’t like other gyms, tell us what sets you apart?
A
The Lab itself is a purpose built environment, there are no traditional sit down exercise machines as found in mainstream health clubs. This ensures our focus is on functional movements that occur in three planes of motion which force the body to use its own internal stabilisation systems. Our team’s collective knowledge gives us a deep understanding of our client’s bodies and its needs, meaning we can deliver highly effective programmes and classes that really work whilst still looking after the longterm care of our client’s musculoskeletal health. As an independent fitness facility we have the luxury of remaining client focused, we don’t have any financial constrains or distractions that too commonly force fitness teams to drive revenue above delivering great customer service.
Q
We’re used to seeing classes like Body Pump and Zumba; your classes have some peculiar names, so how would I know which one is right for me?
A
Our classes are all named after the physiological outcome that the classes deliver. Metcon is an abbreviation of metabolic conditioning which describes improving fitness at a cellular level. MovNat is an abbreviation of move naturally, which is the focus of the class being more movement focused to develop and reinforce proper movement patterns at a neurological level. Fight Strong uses boxing and kick boxing techniques and movements to develop fitness and functional exercises to develop muscular strength and endurance.
Q
I haven’t heard of MovNat, can you briefly describe the benefits?
A
MovNat is based on natural human movement patterns that relate back to infant development. An infant learns to breath correctly in the first few seconds it enters our world, it then learns to roll, to crawl, to stand, to balance, to squat, to hinge at the hip, to walk and then run. This is intuitive with no need for coaching. MovNat is about re-establishing these motor patterns which are often compromised due to the unnatural environment in which we all live; we call it the ‘human zoo’. Once we have re-established these movement patterns we move on to more complex movements, such as throwing, catching, climbing and lunging to develop strength and fitness, to further reinforce proper movement. With MovNat the body adapts by toning and strengthen as a response to proper movement and thus delivers the aesthetic and health benefits that many people exercise to obtain.
Q
How is Personal Training different at The Fit Lab?
A
Our approach to improving human performance is one that is rarely
5 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
found outside of elite level sport, in fact only a few elite level sports teams or athletes actually follow what I would say is best practice. However we believe that every person should have the opportunity to be trained in what can scientifically be proven to be optimal. First we focus on improving movement skill; we then develop strength and endurance in movement before we finally lay fitness on skill and strength.
Q
How do you keep your clients motivated to come back every week
A
They make progress every session, they move better, they feel better and they look better. They also learn about their body, they learn to appreciate why we take the approach we do and why taking a different approach to exercise many not be the best thing for their long term health. Although we care about short term health and fitness at the Lab, we care more about our client’s long term health, I think that is actually quite a unique approach in an industry that is dominated by short term revenue generation. Our clients really get the fact that we genuinely care about them as individuals, unfortunately this is not the norm, I do however hope this can change as more centres like ours open and start to challenge the larger fitness providers’ business model. All that said we also do the simple things, we strive to make exercise engaging, no two classes are ever the same, and above all we try to make it Fun!
Q
You mentioned your team & trainers can you elaborate on that?
A
We have team of health care professionals, in-house personal trainers which we are looking to grow as we find the right calibre of trainer that we can mentor and develop, we also have a physiotherapist who works closely with the trainers. Chris Lewis our physiotherapist specialises in foot biomechanics and Neuro kinetic Therapy, of which only a hand full of people in the UK are qualified in. Chris works with us at the Lab because his skills and knowledge allow us to make progress with clients’ when often other trainers and therapists have failed. He helps us discover any functional issues that many be causing a client pain or limiting their performance, this may not be the ability to run a race but in performing day to day activities, never the less physical limitations should be removed where possible for long term health. We also have an external team of soft tissue therapists and osteopaths that support Chris to ensure we can progress clients as quickly and efficiently as possible. Linear fashion Bad news for those without a steady hand, eyeliner is more elaborate than ever this season. A nondescript subtle line will no longer do - the classic cat eye has evolved into a dramatic statement flick. Go as bold as you dare. “Take inspiration from Anna Sui with a monochrome Sixtiesinspired eye that creates drama with a strong black graphic flick up into the socket line,” Piggott says. Practise makes perfect when it comes to mastering a new shape. Whether you prefer a fine or bold line, a liner with a precise tip will give you an effective thick or thin application.

Sepia shadow Retro tones come to life on eyelids this season, as if lifted straight from a sepia photograph. tried & tested Jeremy Gates hops aboard the trend train for a razor-sharp wet shave: Shaving at home can seem a dull, daily chore, but there’s something decadently indulgent about treating yourself to a professional wet shave. I book myself in for one with demon barber Omar Houdaifa. As my chair eased back, soft chords of mildly mystic music playing in the background, Omar explained the process. He took his time to work pre-shave oil (rich in borage and sesame oils) into the skin - lots in my case, as electric shaving has apparently left my skin as dry as a desert! Next, my face was wrapped in a hot towel oozing fragrant aromas for five soothing minutes to open the pores. Shaving cream (babassu oil and manuka honey) was then applied to soften my beard and protect the skin. The first sweep of the blade, following the direction of the growth of the stubble, felt like a bit of a raw sandpapering at times, but Omar took such great care that I never actually expected to lose blood. After another sloshing of shaving cream, the second sweep - this time sideways in direction - was super-smooth. Omar daintily completed the job with dabs of his blade here and there, to mop up any remaining stubborn bristles. When I felt the amazing smoothness of the finished job, I almost danced out of the door afterwards. To get your money’s worth with a wet shave, it’s recommended that have at least two to three days worth of stubble, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the difference that half an hour’s close attention will make. :: Gentlemen’s Tonic Wet Shave, Renaissance Hotel, St Pancras International Station, London, £28 (020 841 3540/www.gentlemenstonic.com). :: For similar treatments nationwide visit www.wahanda.com/places/treatmentmens-shaving/offer-type-local/in-uk/ include-non-transactional/
apply using a brush for a soft finish. Bountiful brows Tweezers have been vetoed this season in favour of natural, brushed-up brows that frame the face. If you don’t have enough to play with, cheat and gently fill in for fuller and thicker eyebrows that bestow a more youthful look. At Proenza Schouler, definition was achieved using two shades darker than the natural brow tone. “It’s naturally enhanced beauty with a strong brow focus,” says M.A.C make-up artist Diane Kendal. “Powder will create a thicker, bushy effect.”An eyebrow comb will be your best friend this season. Comb upwards through the brows and use a clear brow gel to set in place.

Long lasting results - no pain, no downtime. Facial rejuvenation is one of the Aesthetic Skin Centre’s signature offerings and they’vebeen incredibly impressed with the results gained with the Fusion SLR system, recently launched at the clinic. With long lasting results, it is one of the latest and most advanced non-surgical treatments that combines diamond exfoliation, acoustic wave sonic technology and low level laser cell stimulation for a tighter, healthier and younger looking face. The results with this 3-step treatment have been sensational, with patients feeling smoother and more radiant after just one treatment. “I could not believe how my skin looked and felt after just a single treatment with the Fusion SLR, and after 4 sessions I could really see a difference in the quality and texture of my skin. I have recommended this treatment to all my friends!” Hillary J. A complete treatment takes about 45 minutes and, with the recommended course of 6 treatments, the outcome is firmer, tighter skin for that smooth and ‘lifted’ look. This non-invasive treatment really delivers a true ‘wow’ factor. Trudy Friedman, owner and Director of the Aesthetic Skin Centre, one of London’s leading and wellrespected aesthetic practices, has a true passion for sourcing groundbreaking aesthetic technologies and procedures. JOHN BLY ANTIQUES
Mr Baxter & pot lids... A recent article by Andrew Roberts in a Sunday supplement cautioned the dangers of abandoning teaching proper history in the proper manner, for it is by such means that we may learn from a past situation, compare it with the status quo and have an inkling of what may occur next. I agree.
F
or many years I have advocated that an all-round look at social history through the ages is the easiest and most enjoyable way to learn about antiques of any category, and studying their recent history in supply and demand has added another dimension to the subject; that of financial gains and losses. Take for example the work of George Baxter, 1804 –1867, the printer, whose pre-eminence faded during his lifetime but whose work saw a frenzied revival during the 1920’s only to fade again during the late 20th century. George Baxter was the son of a publisher and bookseller and having served his apprenticeship to a wood engraver set himself the task of revolutionising printing techniques in colour. The process incorporated the use of coloured oil inks, an initial metal keyplate and up to twenty further metal or wood blocks to apply each individual colour. Thus Baxter is acknowledged as the ‘inventor’ of this colour printing method for which he received deserved acclaim, but only for a while. He was granted a patent in 1835 and by 1845 had exhibited at The Royal Academy. He had been commissioned to make coloured prints of the Queen’s Coronation and the Opening of Parliament and in 1851 took a stand at The Great Exhibition where he received an award. He made a set of prints showing Paxton’s masterful Crystal Palace and continued to diversify his work into prints that could be applied to virtually any surface and depict any subject. In the 1920’s several large books on the man, his life and works were produced at great cost for a large and enthusiastic band of devotees. A shame that these came sixty or so years after Baxter’s wretched demise for in 1860 he was declared bankrupt and in 1866 was hit by a carriage and died in penury and no doubt in pain a year later. One major problem was that his processes were so laborious that by the time his wonderful pictures of great occasions were ready for marketing they were long since over and yesterday’s news. But for us his legacy is extraordinary; beautifully crafted scenes of Victorian life, great masterpieces of art, national heroes, theatrical heroines, historic moments and events from popular fiction, all to be found on a vast range of items from paper pictures, wooden caskets and boxes, porcelain panels and, my own favourite, ceramic pot lids. But it was not long before a small number of other companies found less costly ways around Baxter’s printing patent. Here the name
6 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
of Felix Edward Pratt enters the story. He was the man who recognized that the new, cheaper transfer printing enabled reproductions of Baxters’s work to be applied to the covers of these round shallow jars which were made to contain everything from fish paste to tooth paste, ointments for every conceivable skin complaint and bear’s grease hair conditioners for Victorian gentlemen. One such balm, Macassar Oil, was so popular that the name became synonymous with any scalp application that marked the backs of upholstered chairs and so caused the creation of crocheted slip covers known as Antimacassars. This was also the time when gentlemen wore smoking caps to prevent the smell of tobacco smoke impregnating their perfumed hair oil. See what I mean about social history. Anyway, with the development of mass production of the jars in the Stoke-on-Trent potteries, pot lids became as available and collectable in their time as the prizes in a Corn Flake Packet are today, with the difference that they were durable. They could be framed and hung on the wall or displayed in cabinets. While many were made to carry the brand name of the contents or the retailer, the most desirable continued to be those bearing the ‘Baxter’ type prints. In the mid1950’s large collections of pot lids were formed but in books on antiques produced during the late 20th and early 21st century they get, along with George Baxter, barely a mention. However, when there is a finite supply there will always be a steady and often increasing demand for the genuine article. There are over 4000 lid patterns recorded and over 300 Baxter prints registered, and there is a Pot Lid Circle which you can join. There is no doubt that to judge from economic patterns of the past we can look at these two categories now and be sure that they will return once more to wider acclaim... by the time this is published they may be doing so already. But don’t all rush at once, give me a chance. After all it was my idea. However, as a word of warning, during their heyday of great demand and high prices, fakes were made. Some are easy to spot from their poor quality but others have all the appearances of genuine age, including the crackled glaze produced during the firing process, which can so easily deceive.
So do as much research as you can before you venture forth. I am indebted to Anna Maggs of Yewtree Antiques for the illustrations.

ritish home-owners up and down the country love home improvement projects especially as the nights draw in and the weekends are increasingly spent indoors. Growing your living space and upping your standard of living is one of the nation’s favourite pastimes. We have all dabbled in loft conversions or kitchen extensions - even if it has never got beyond the architect’s drawing. But now we have a new fascination. This summer, the sunniest since 2006, we all fell in love with our gardens. It was the seventh sunniest summer since measuring began in 1929. And we enjoyed 588 hours of recorded sunshine, sitting around in deckchairs, tending the herbaceous border and lighting up the barbecue. The British have always loved their gardens, but this summer re-kindled the flame and the sparks are still flying. Not content to turn our backs on the green, green grass we are dreaming of garden rooms, gazebos and pavilions. We are dreaming of outside indoor spaces and this is just what the designers at Crown Pavilions (www.crownpavilions.com) are doing. Taking the garden gazebo to new levels, Crown Pavilions create stunning Canadian, cedar wood, garden rooms complete with spa pools, comfy sofas, underfloor heating and mood lighting. Bespoke to the last blind toggle, garden pavilions are set to change the way you live. Gardens are growing up, becoming more sophisticated and better-used. What better way to make use of your garden than as extra living space – and not just for the summer months.
Look for extra Living space.
‘We eat out at least twice a week’, says Mrs Gordens. ‘I use disposable plates so that there is no washing up; it brings the family together without the chore factor.’ Being in the garden is not only a good excuse for cutting down on the washing up, it is good for the soul, it is good for one’s well-being and it is totally liberating. ‘We have enjoyed some of our best evenings this summer’, says Katy from Chichester, ‘it has just been amazing to invite friends around to eat out in our pavilion. Being outside somehow relaxes people - we have much more interesting conversations than if we were indoors!’ Summer is over but if you get your garden room right, it can be used whatever the weather. Launched at Grand Designs Live, the latest innovation from Crown Pavilions is an outdoor cinema room. We are not talking outdoor screens and rugs on the lawn: this is a super plush mini cinema with bi-fold doors, an engineered oak floor and a stylish sit-up bar. A button key-pad dims the lights just where you want them while the HD projector and speakers are discretely built into the walls. Sprawl on a sofa, sit in tiered rows or go for a love seat – it is your very own cinema just the way you want it. One of the nicest things about a Crown Pavilions bespoke garden room is that it can be used just how you like whether it’s for a party night, a kid’s den, a Pilates room or a home office. It gets you out of the house, into the garden and into a whole new lifestyle, a place for you-time, kids’-time, work-time or get-together time – Christmas in the garden anyone? Handle it your way!

ocks & Handles is a shop specializing in British door and window handles in a bewildering array of sizes and finishes. Comprehensive stocks of furniture, cabinet and cupboard hardware are held. Architectural Ironmongery including all types of locks & latches, brass electrical switch plates and ventilation grilles are available. They also sell bathroom accessories like taps and an amazing selection of shower baskets. The business, founded in 1965, used to be located in Exhibition Road in South Kensington but has now relocated to larger premises on Effie Road, just off Fulham Broadway. It is now easier for parking and is a minute walk from the Underground station. While traditional period design brass fittings are the main stock line, Locks & Handles now sell an increasing quantity of contemporary designed chrome plated products. Currently polished nickel plate is the fashionable finish and is being specified by many customers. Bronze is of course the perfect finish for front door furniture and, although this is more expensive, is highly recommended. Although Locks & Handles is based in London a good selection of ‘rustic’ black iron door furniture, usually associated with country cottages, is held in stock. It is lovely to see quality British manufactured brassware so well represented in this shop along with European manufactured products. Unlike the high street DIY stores, Locks & Handles specialize in the higher quality English manufactured hardware. This is one of the industries that Britain leads the

world in. The quality & finish of English manufactured door furniture & bathroom accessories is far superior to the imported items. The Locks & Handles sales assistants are willing to help with any enquiry no matter how unusual and are extremely knowledgeable. Even if you are not quite sure about what exactly you might require or need, they can offer advice or find you a solution to your enquiry. Most fittings are actually on display in the showroom so you can really get a feel of them in a tactile way and have a better sense of the different finishes available, which is something that you cannot always get from looking at a picture on the internet or from a catalogue. The shop tries to keep most items in stock but if something is unavailable they have regular deliveries from all British manufacturers. The company offers to supply bespoke items and other finishes to ‘special order’ and regular customers include many of the worlds leading interior designers, hotels, palaces and luxury liners. A visit to this specialist shop is highly recommended to everyone who has an interest in interior design, building or renovating their home. FIRST DRIVE
ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH BY IAIN DOOLEY
Whatever you do, don’t call Rolls-Royce’s new Wraith a two-door Ghost. The Goodwood-based maker of super luxury cars is understandably keen to stress that the differences between the two cars are more than skin deep.
I
n a bid to attract the attention of younger, but equally well-heeled buyers as for its flagship Phantom and Ghost ranges, a two-door coupe was envisioned as the best approach. And, according to company bosses, while the Wraith’s focus remains firmly on the side of comfort and refinement, it’s also been tasked to inject a little extra excitement into the driving experience. For all this talk of separating Ghost from Wraith, at an engineering level the latter does share much with the former. The basic platform and powertrain can indeed be traced back to the Ghost, although that’s where the similarities end. Visually, the Wraith possesses a number of clever details to ensure it
7 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3
stands out in an otherwise conservative market, from the car’s subtly recessed trademark grille to the eye-catching elongated door handles. The rounded rump also does much to flatter its not inconsiderable footprint. Although, being a RollsRoyce, it’s always going to be wider and taller than your average luxury car, the upside is most obvious when sat in the back. The Wraith might be a two-door coupe but it’s also a genuine four-seater. The car’s oversize doors help with access and there’s no problem getting comfortable once inside. From the two-tone exterior - fancy a sparkling blue base and silver roof? - to the near endless possibilities inside, there’s scope for buyers young and old. And then there’s the generous application of wood covering the inside of the car’s doors. If
M OTO R S
you needed any further proof that you’re comfortably in ‘no expense sparred’ territory, this is it. There’s also a certain ‘don’t spare the horses’ approach with the Wraith’s performance. Although powered by Rolls-Royce’s familiar 6.6-litre V12 turbo petrol motor, this is the Goodwood firm’s most potent model to date, thanks in the main to the considerable 624bhp on tap. The zero to 62mph sprint is despatched in a mere 4.4 seconds, not bad for a 2.4 tonne car. Power isn’t everything in the Wraith universe but it sure does help. When you want to waft you can do it with ease; the eight-speed auto gearbox always manages to be in the right gear at the right time. Factor in Rolls-Royce’s trademark fingertiplight steering and even the tightest of turns in a crowded city environment are a doddle. That all this can be done without any hint of engine or tyre noise shattering the serenity of the cabin ambience is another reason why the Wraith is a cut above the mainstream - and cheaper - opposition. But it’s that promise of brisk performance that’s likely to appeal to buyers wanting to take the helm on a regular basis. There’s no question the Wraith can shift when you’re in the mood. Thanks to light but communicative controls, its size is no barrier to enjoyment
on sinuous country roads - it all boils down to driver confidence. Ride comfort at speed keeps Rolls-Royce’s reputation intact, while its agility belies its size. Overall, the Wraith delivers on its maker’s claims that it’s a convincing continent-crosser, leaving you just as refreshed at the end of journey as when you started. However, lean on the Wraith’s ample power reserves and you uncover a more boisterous side to this luxo-coupe. Replete with bellowing exhaust and hunkered down stance, comparisons of iron fists inside velvet gloves are appropriate. Glamorous in a way the Ghost is conservative, and driver-focused in a way unmatched elsewhere in the premium luxury market, it’s Rolls-Royce’s successful attempt at connecting with the creators of the Facebook generation.

Priory House is built of brick with Wisteria clad elevations and sits well within its oasis of a garden, being protected on all quarters by established trees and hedges.
