McMullen pub in Heronsgate offers mouth-watering

Opportunity for Entrepreneurs

I

n an unprecedented move, McMullen, the family brewer based in Hertford, is looking for budding entrepreneurs to run one of its most profitable and attractive village pubs without investing any capital, or paying any rent, utilities or rates.

The Stag, a newly refurbished gastro pub in Heronsgate, near Chorleywood, has recently become available as a result of personal commitments, and is on the Pub Operators Agreement with no capital required. Since its £120,000 refurbishment, it has proved hugely profitable, trading at around £9,000 a week, with sales up by over 100 per cent in the first year, and 12 per cent so far this year. The popularity of home-cooked food at this welcoming, stylish, food-led pub makes it an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic entrepreneur or couple who would like to run their own business, but do not have the financial backing to prove their talents. It’s ideal for someone who knows the local area and has a keen sense of community. Furthermore, McMullen is also looking for someone with a strong food background to become the tenant of The Blue Anchor, in St Albans. This 8 MARCH2014

pub was previously run by celebrity chef Paul Bloxham, and McMullen is looking to substantially refurbish the kitchen facilities with the right partner. Again, interested parties do not necessarily have to provide considerable capital, but must possess the right skills and attitude for this demanding, yet rewarding opportunity. Gavin Mansfield, Tenant Operations Manager at McMullen, says: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a Hertfordshire resident who would like to run their own pub but simply has not been given the chance for whatever reasons. The Stag has proved incredibly profitable since its refurbishment, and is sure to continue this success with the right operator. At McMullen, we are looking to work with people who have the right aptitude and ability, not simply the right bank balance.” For more information contact Gavin Mansfield at McMullen & Sons, 26 Old Cross, Hertford, Hertfordshire SG14 1RD on 01992 584911 www.mcmullens.co.uk

THE RELAUNCH OF

Hertford House Hotel

S

et in a stunning 19th Century Grade 2 listed building, Hertford House has long been at the heart of the charming market town of Hertford. Owned by the Shipton family for nearly two decades, dynamic plans are in place to re-launch this iconic venue as a two floor consolidated restaurant, cocktail bar and late-night lounge incorporating the late-night bar Elberts into the new offer. The project will be overseen by top London chef, Carl Clarke, bringing it more in line with the capital’s hottest eateries and cocktail bars. Carl hails from the frontline of sell-out dining experiences in London that include a NYC/punk style lobster bar Rock Lobsta in Shoreditch, The English Launderette - an inspired nostalgic take on California’s infamous The French Laundry and God Save the Clam - a New England style clam bake with a British twist to celebrate the Jubilee weekend. His passion for unearthing traditional British ingredients and giving them a modern-day twist is his trademark, championing independent suppliers and small-batch artisanal producers. ‘I met Nick at one of my pop-ups I was running last summer and immediately loved the idea of a project outside of London, doing what we do but taking it to a new audience that perhaps hasn’t witnessed the latest dining and drinking trends in town, it’s all going off right now. Taking strong inspiration from New York and adding a very British stance is what I do, Hertford is a great place, with some outstanding local produce so i’m going to be involving that heavily in the new menus. I’m really looking forward to working alongside the Shipton brothers, maximizing their local knowledge and experience of operating for many successful years and bringing a fresh, contemporary new face to Hertford House.’ Carl Clarke. Focussing on great quality, British produce, highlights from the new Hertford House menu include wood-grilled, rare-breed Flat Iron and 35 day aged Rib Eye steaks, Cornish day-boat fish, BBQ hickory smoked chicken and Saddleback baby ribs.

10 MARCH2014

A selection of ‘top notch’ burgers, pulled pork buns, buttermilk fried chicken rolls and crackled fish and spicy crab tacos will satisfy all appetites whilst lighter dishes include fresh house smoked chicken, charred butternut squash and hot smoked salmon salads. The ‘bartender’s choice’ cocktail selection ranges from innovative Sours, Jammin’ Mojitos made with local ‘Pickle Tink’ jam to smoked Jalapeno Pickle Backs and Wild Hibiscus Champagne Fizzes. Whether customers fancy a lunchtime Prosecco, quiet afternoon pint catching the latest sporting event or after-work cocktail, the bar will be fully stocked and helpful staff at hand to recommend a good libation. Nick Shipton sums up the new project: ‘We’re really excited to be working with Carl and bringing a slice of the cutting edge East London bar and restaurant scene to Hertford, I think the time is right and will create a progressive new chapter for Hertford House. In the past we’ve always strived to associate ourselves with the pioneers of the latest drinks and music trends and having an edgy new chef on board will align us with some of London’s hottest bars and restaurants. Engaging Carl as a collaborator is bringing the heart of the action to us and not diluting it along the way, ensuring the most authentic experience possible. There’s a huge buzz around excellent street food and diner-inspired dining concepts right now, bringing this element to Hertford is an exciting step and will shake things up a bit around here, we can›t wait to re-open!›

Hertford House will re-launch to the public on Saturday the18th April. Hertford House, 1 Fore St, Hertford SG14 1DA www.hertfordhouse.co.uk

Our urban surroundings are not just alive with the hubbub of daily life, they also house many wonderful landmarks with iconic architecture. This month we explore the original paintings of those artists who eloquently capture the softer side of city environments. In their work they convey the emotional connection we have with these places, and the continuing fascination they embody.

NIGEL COOKE PARISIAN STROLL £825

EDWARD WAITE RUSH HOUR ST PAULS SUNSET £750

Nigel Cooke – working primarily with monochrome tones, Cookes loose style of drip painting is harnassed in bringing places like Paris, Amsterdam, London and New York to life. Accent colours add a touch of warmth, allowing the power and stature of the work to envelope you. Joe Bowen -Impressionism with a modern vent, a wet day in Trafalgar Square is turned into an enchanting encounter. Primarily painting views of UK cities, Bowen demonstratse a superb touch without overcomplicating his palette. Edward Waite – A young up-and-coming artist, Waite has been creating waves with his minimalist yet striking vistas. Also employing a drip painting

technique, lines are more pronounced and distinct. Often using dominant colours as his backdrop, he has garnered a loyal following for his crisp and contemporary approach. Rayford – with a whimsical and quirky perspective, Rayford injects the fun factor into his pieces. Inspiration is drawn from the eclectic mix of architecture around us, balancing the old with the new. Rachel Tighe – Vibrant works with an uber modern twist, Tighe brilliantly captures the essence of a location. Conventional detail gives way to fast paced mark making. What may at first appear random is pulled together in an explosion of energy.

North London Collegiate School

Excellence in Education

N

orth London Collegiate School, one of Britain’s leading schools, was founded by the great Victorian education pioneer, Frances Mary Buss. From its inception over 160 years ago, the School has provided an exceptional education for girls from a wide variety of backgrounds. Set in the grounds of the former home of the Duke of Chandos, NLCS provides a first-class academic education in a parkland setting within London. The School’s extensive coach service enables girls aged 4 to 18 from across London and the surrounding counties to attend. Whilst ensuring academic excellence and intellectual challenge, equal attention is given to supporting the development of the whole person, aiming to inspire confidence, individuality and self-esteem. Consequently, the school is a positive and energetic community where girls are encouraged to take advantage of the abundant opportunities open to them, with around 36 productions, 40 societies and 30 foreign trips offered each year. In this friendly, supportive environment, the girls are highly motivated and develop self-belief, independence of mind and an appetite for learning. NLCS offers students wide academic choice including six modern languages, Triple Award IGCSE Science at 16, drama, art and music. In the Sixth Form, pupils are offered a choice of A Levels, Pre-U or the

14 MARCH2014

IB Diploma. The Sutton Trust “Degrees of Success” report placed the School first nationally for proportion of students gaining places to highly selective universities, in keeping with the fact that around 40 girls go to Oxbridge and Ivy League schools each year. NLCS has a highly international perspective that is unique amongst London day schools. The opening of its sister school in South Korea benefits pupils through exchange opportunities and internships and creates an important connection with the ever-growing economies of the Far East. The School also offers student and staff exchanges with schools in the USA, Australia and Germany, as well as outreach opportunities with a school in Zambia. Central to the ethos of the School is offering bursarial help to as many girls as possible, making available the best education to bright and able pupils irrespective of their backgrounds. NLCS gives individual support to all girls so that they have the confidence to be future leaders. Courtesy, care and consideration for others underpin community life. NLCS is a diverse and tolerant school where cultural difference is acknowledged and celebrated. For further information, please visit www. nlcs.org.uk

A Fresh Approach It has been a busy and exciting 18 months at Edge Grove since the arrival of the new Headmaster, Ben Evans.

H

e is committed to the pursuit of excellence at Edge Grove and this is particularly evident by his implementation of the Independent Curriculum. It is a fresh approach designed specifically for Prep schools, with academic rigour at its heart, enhanced by creativity in every discipline. Through active learning it develops problem-solving skills and prepares pupils naturally for the 11+ and 13+ exams. Ben Evans strongly believes that a broad curriculum, inspirational teaching, the highest expectations and superb pastoral support combine to ensure outstanding academic achievement and develop a love of learning that equips pupils for life. To underpin this new curriculum, Edge Grove has introduced numerous innovative resources and facilities to further enhance its pupils’ educational experience. In addition to interactive whiteboards in all the classrooms and a dedicated cross-curricular computer suite, iPads have been introduced in the Pre-Prep and Lowers School this academic year. The Art centre now incorporates dedicated facilities for Textiles technology, and the Music school has been enlarged and fitted with iMac technology for musical composition

in the Upper School. Home Economics has been included in pupils’ weekly curriculum and is taught in a state of the art purpose-built facility, equipping them with essential life skills as well as developing their independent thinking and cross-curricular skills in subjects such as maths and science. Taking full advantage of Edge Grove’s setting amid 28 acres of beautiful parkland, creating an outdoor learning environment has been another focus under Ben Evans’ leadership. All pupils enjoy playing in a new adventure playground and Nursery pupils’ education has been enriched by the Forest School curriculum. A weeping willow arbour has been constructed along with other outdoor child-friendly areas. As the Good Schools Guide recently observed, “…it is a world apart from many of its concrete clad urban rivals.” To find out more about Edge Grove, meet Ben Evans and tour the school, visit www.edgegrove.com

broad range of skills. The quality of music and sport is particularly strong and boys gain Scholarships to their chosen senior Schools in these specialised subjects, alongside Academic scholarships. Beyond the classroom, boys improve their spoken French on a residential visit to Burgundy, enjoy outdoor adventure trips and sail on the Isle of Wight. The biennial Rugby Tour to South Africa is always a favourite. A community coming together One of the remarkable things about a good school is the way in which it can engender tremendous community spirit. Such spirit was really evident at Aldenham in their response to the tragic events of the Philippines Typhoon last November

T

he result was a 24 hour Music ‘Play In’ organised at short notice during which pupils, parents, staff, former pupils and friends of the school were able to offer a continual programme of performance all day and all night. Every pupil in the Senior School and in the Prep School, plus 40 pupils from their sister school, St Hilda’s Bushey were able to take part.

There were operatic performances, rock bands, nursery school choirs and many talented soloists. They also took the opportunity to mark the 100th birthday of Benjamin Britten with performances of three of his choral works at midnight. The culmination was an extremely powerful service in the School Chapel where the 560 students in the Senior School sang ‘Amazing Grace’ and prayed for the people from The Philippines. Audiences and all those connected with the event responded in a most generous way with over £13,500 being raised for the DEC Typhoon Hayan appeal. All those involved will remember this as a very special event indeed – a really appropriate response to tragic events.

THE QUEEN’S PROPERTY EMPIRE

Queen Elizabeth II is worth £320million according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2013 Where does all this money come from? Firstly, there’s property – the Queen has one of the largest property empires in the world. The Queen’s holdings include Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Kensington Palace. The Crown Estate, the company that owns and manages the sovereign’s land, also owns large swathes of London’s Regent Street, the Royal Parks, Ascot Racecourse and 106,000 hectares of farmland. Other royal assets include an extensive art and fine jewellery collection, and one of the world’s largest stamp collections. Although estimates of The Queen’s wealth include the royal assets, these are not her private property – she can’t sell them. Instead they are held by her as Sovereign on behalf of the nation and they will eventually be passed on to her successor. So where does HRH’s spending money come from? The Queen essentially receives an income in three main ways: The Sovereign Grant, the Privy Purse and The Queen’s personal wealth and income. The Sovereign Grant came into existence in April 2012. The Sovereign Grant is equal to 15% of the profits from the Crown Estate from two years previously. It was worth £31million in the year 2012-13 but the Royal Household’s net expenditure was £33.3million, hence the Queen needing to dip into her reserve fund. With the Crown Estate booming (it made a profit of £253million last year), the Sovereign Grant is £36.1 million for the tax year 2013-14 and set to rise to £37.9 million in 2014-15. Out of this cash, the Queen must carry out her official duties, and maintain the “occupied” Royal Palaces: Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace, Clarence House, Marlborough House Mews, Windsor Castle, the buildings in the Home and Great Parks at Windsor, and Hampton Court Mews and Paddocks. 26 MARCH2014

What’s in the Privy Purse? The next source of income for the Queen is the Privy Purse. This is a historical term used to describe income from the Duchy of Lancaster. It’s used to meet both official and private expenditure by The Queen. The Duchy of Lancaster is a portfolio of land, property and assets held in trust for the Sovereign. It’s administered separately from the Crown Estates and generally used to meet official expenses incurred by other members of the Royal Family. In the financial year ending 31st March 2013, it was valued at £429 million. However the Queen can’t get her hands on the capital of the portfolio, just revenue profits. This secured her an income of £12.5million in 2012-13. The Duchy of Cornwall is yet another property portfolio held in trust, this time to meet, in part, the expenses of the monarch’s eldest son and various members of his family. Prince Charles receives revenue from it to pay for his official activities, as does Camilla as Duchess of Cornwall, William and Kate, and Prince Harry. The estate was valued at £763million last year providing Charles with private income of about £19million. The Queen’s third source of funding is her personal income. This comes from her personal investment portfolio and private estates. The Queen personally owns the Balmoral and Sandringham Estates. The Queen’s private income is used to meet her “private expenses”. So, what does the Queen spend her money on? It’s mostly official duties such as travel for official engagements in the UK and abroad; the maintenance of Royal residencies; funding for the work of The Duke of Edinburgh which supports and complements that of The Queen; and salaries for employees of the Royal Household.

he magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists ’cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe, with international press attending from 42 countries. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made.

who graduated from the college several years ago. She has gone on to dress women from Michelle Obama to actress Emma Stone.

While we are all thinking about our Spring and Summer wardrobes, designers were showcasing this year’s Autumn and Winter Collections. And with a buzz of anticipation for a blockbuster season of shows – it was one of the event’s biggest line-ups yet.

Hunter, best known for those sturdy, no-nonsense wellies seen on trendy young attendees of music festivals like Glastonbury, debuted its clothing range in a basement space set up to look like a dark forest, complete with a watery runway and realistic looking birch trees. Models - both male and female - splashed down the catwalk in colorful raincoats and capes, shorts and miniskirts, belted trench coats and puffy winter jackets. Everyone, of course, sported Hunter boots that came in a range of colours and styles, including a heeled ankle-length version.

For the first time, celebrity designer Tom Ford staged a womenswear catwalk show in London, while singer Rihanna created a stir with her debut fashion collection. While major players like Burberry, Mulberry and Vivienne Westwood still lead the British fashion scene, the most closely-watched design heroes of the moment - are all under 40 years old: Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou, Erdem. And they are just some of the most recognisable names among more than a dozen ambitious, emerging talents that have put London on the international style map. “The buyers who come to London don’t go to just one or two shows - they go to nearly every show, every day. You miss the show, you miss the hot new trend,’’ said Caroline Rush, the British Fashion Council’s chief executive. Bora Aksu, the Turkish designer based in London, showed off a collection that contrasted tough leather with romance and ethereal silhouettes. Central St Martins, the storied art college from which superstars like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen graduated, put on a graduate show, that was bursting with youthful creativity. “It was really a breath of fresh air. At this stage you should experiment as much as you can,’’ said Roksanda Illincic, 36 MARCH2014

Other notable designers showing at this season’s five-day event included L’Wren Scott, the American partner of Mick Jagger; Julien Macdonald, a celebrity favourite, who returned after a two-season break; and Jonathan Saunders, who wowed with his classy prints and patterns. HUNTER MAKES A SPLASH WITH DEBUT SHOW

Hunter had drummed up considerable publicity for the event, and its front row VIPs included Vogue editor Anna Wintour, singer Jessie J, as well as designer Stella McCartney. Just to make sure it leaves an impression on guests, the brand closed with a little magic performance and a shower of playing cards. It was a cool touch, and entertaining to boot. BURBERRY PRORSUM Burberry revealed the Burberry Prorsum womenswear Autumn/Winter 2014 collection, The Bloomsbury Girls, The collection takes creative inspiration from the British decorative art of the Bloomsbury set and Charleston, the country home and meeting place for the writers, painters and intellectuals who formed the group. Collections included relaxed trench coats, Blanket ponchos , Equestrian topcoats and tea dresses. Fabrics included hand-

painted leather, suede and shearling. Double cashmere, Crepe silk, and embroidered tulle lace. Colours included elderberry, cameo pink, antique rose, deep bottle green, burnt sienna, lavender grey and camel. Guests included musicians Harry Styles, Tinie Tempah, Laura Mvula, Lianne La Havas, actors Bradley Cooper, Naomie Harris, Felicity Jones, Melanie Laurent, Daniel Brühl, Jamie Campbell Bower, film producers Harvey Weinstein, Mohammed Al Turki, photographer Mario Testino, media personalities Greg James, Cat Deeley, Olivia Palermo, Poppy Delevingne and Felicitas Rombold. Models walking the show included Suki Waterhouse, Cara Delevingne, Jean Campbell, Malaika Firth, Neelam Johal, Matilda Lowther, Jourdan Dunn, Charlotte Wiggins, Edie Campbell, Sung Hee Kim and Xiao Wen Ju. The custom-built show space opened up to reveal British musicians Paloma Faith, Ed Harcourt and Rhodes performing live to the 1500 guests at London’s Kensington Gardens. The specially arranged runway soundtracks are available for download on iTunes.com/Burberry. CENTRAL ST MARTINS The collections of eleven students were shown to an audience which included alumni, press and industry. MICHAEL POWER and Ondrej Adamek will be two very happy Central Saint Martins MA graduates, jointly scooping the evening’s L’Oreal Professionel Creative Award, judged by star alumni Christopher Kane. Power for his black and colourfully beaded tunics and dresses that hung purposefully heavy over shorts and wader-style boots beneath; and Adamek for his 3D dresses, Part of an 11-student line-up, it was a solid show with clearly defined ideas from each student. Teruhiro Hasegawa brought us Maleficent-style gowns in red and black, terrifying but very elegant; Drew Henry opted for boxy severe shapes in khaki, hides draped in there too or incorporated into boots and gloves; and Rory ParnellMooney gave us a sense of the calm and solemn for oversized and cloakorientated menswear in a sober palette of gentle blues, visor caps worn up top to ecclesiastical effect.

HOUSE OF HOLLAND

JOHN ROCHA Finding inspiration in the dusk dark light of Icelandic skies and revisiting his love of the work of Pierre Soulages, John Rocha Autumn/Winter 2014 is an exploration of romanticism. It is at once dark and light, sophisticated yet youthful, nonchalant and passionate. As in all John’s work there is a symmetry, a balance between the tender and the strong, the stark and the ornate. The palette, grounded in all the textures and shades of black, is under lit in dusk shades with midnight greens, shadowy garnet and forest smoke. Raw-edge tweed trapeze coats and cropped jackets fall from the shoulder. Skirts and tunics are layered in embroidered tulle, lace and silks.. Great coats wrap the body in velvets, and sweetly figured dresses and shells define the silhouette, creating a play on both volume and sculptural forms. Informed by his enduring love of texture and structure, AW14 is filled with John’s particular vision of subtle strength and intricate beauty. VIVIENNE WESTWOOD RED LABEL Red Label clothes give a picture, an impression of a woman who is born in the privileged world, she is warm and looked after. She feels important; she’s engaged with the world and cares about it (‘Don’t Frack my Mother’, Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon); she’s artistic and adventurous. The first look alone would say everything – the voluminous swagger of the coat: underneath – a silky frilled shirt and velvet skirt. She looks like someone who’s going somewhere. The post-war privileged dripping in pearls, fur and a powerful understanding of sexuality – a woman who wears fur trimmed hot pants and voluptuous scarlet taffeta gowns one moment, and no-nonsense pinstripe suits the next. Hourglass jackets flared at the hip adorned with giant black hearts, outsized tartan cropped suits, and a crinoline caged skirt with bronzed frill.Vivienne Westwood’s 16 year-old granddaughter, Cora Corre, stole the show in a cascade of dark brown curls, printed blouse, bell mini skirt and triangle print tights, and accompanied her grandmother hand in hand for the finale. JASPER CONRAN

TEMPERLEY LONDON The start of a new and exciting era for Temperley; the attitude for Winter 2014 is much savvier and sexier.Luxurious layering of separates, rich tailoring and sexier shortened lengths have given the collection increased depth for its Designer positioning covering day, cocktail and evening wear.Intricate pattern, texture and colour are key. Inspired by the ornate detail of Spanish cathedrals and Byzantine architecture; prints echo mosaics, laser cutting emulates stained glass and embroidery is inspired by Chasuble garments. Layered daywear pieces and wearable silhouettes instill a heady romance and celebrate the opulence of another era.Colours mix shades of cobalt, navy, grey, oyster, ochre and rose and are peppered through bold graphics and bright floral patterns. Temperley weaving a little bit of romantic folk-law into everyday life with an overall savvier, funkier and very wearable feel. JASPER CONRAN Day 2 of London Fashion Week and Jasper Conran offered a master class in how to dress like a real woman. The world famous designer showcased his Autumn /Winter 2014 collection that promises to flatter the female form. Conran has described women’s fashion as being ‘rather shapeless’ of late and was keen to present an alternative that celebrates womanly curves. The stunning collection featured silk-lined dresses with cutaway backs, and soft leather jackets designed for day to evening wear. Coats in black, grey, blonde and sugar spun pink with belted waists over cashmere, soft leathers and silk tulle dresses with a ‘quadruple stretch’ were a show-stopper. The neutral palette was brightened up with bursts of tangerine orange. And showing that he knows a woman’s mind, Conran kept accessories to a minimum with just one envelope bag and a mid-high heel. and fusion. The collection is a play on contrasts and extremes, combining sports with formal, summer with winter, embellished surfaces with strict lines. Architectural knit sweaters, skirts and scarves feature energetic intarsia patterns and ribbed textures. Executed in a palette of bitter lemon, tomato and pale blue. Wool jacquards are used for sleek coats inset with graphic patterns, sometimes adorned with embroidery. Colour is intense and dynamic, black juxtaposed with rich fuschia , cobalt and sulphur yellow, alongside soft pastels. PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND Their Autumn/Winter 2014 Womenswear Collection reflects a powerful experimentation with texture and structure. Ultra flat 2D knitwear is married with highly textural 3D elements to present a precise juxtaposition across designs. Unique ready-to-wear 3D printing techniques have been used across the brands heritage knitwear allowing organised and organic textures to seamlessly combine. Each look mixes an urban style with refined silhouettes, slouched trousers in a tuxedo Batavia fabric are paired with distinguished jackets and twin-set style sweaters. The collections colour palette is intentionally simple with sharp shades of off white, blacks and greys, punctuated by sunshine orange and crimson red. MATTHEW WILLIAMSON An attitude of optimism and high-glamour is reimagined for Autumn/ Winter 2014 Collection. Matthew Williamson’s woman is empowered and composed, exuding a playful and exuberant spirit. Elongated shapes with subtly-raised waistlines in outerwear and tailored A-line skirt suits create a defined and constructed silhouette. This is contrasted with feminine shapes in silk, slinky jersey and chiffon for day and eveningwear. The optimistic mood of the collection is captured in the star motif, reinterpreted through embroidery, fabric and print. Stars are playfully arranged into geometric polka dots, or contrasted with a bold graphic print, inspired by a Georgian rug; eluding to interiors of the 70s jet-set. A palette of Jonquil yellow and

deep red is contrasted with gem-like hues of amethyst and pacific opal blue, offset with graphic monochrome and metallic. ISSA LONDON Issa presented their Autumn/Winter Collection at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery. The collection marks a further evolution for the brand, showcasing signature Issa elements, including draping, print, and feminine silhouettes, whilst exploring new categories including tailoring and outerwear. Issa’s reputation for print is prevalent, and for Autumn/ Winter 2014 these prints have been developed further and replicated through varying techniques and fabrications including jacquard, flock, intarsia and hand knit, to make for a highly technical and tactile collection that embraces the playful and feminine side of the brand. Embroidery, flocking and contrast trims are also utilised to explore texture: velvet piping and rubberised zigzag trims add tactile interest to necklines and hems. DAVID KOMA For Autumn/ Winter 14, David Koma’s collection was inspired by the portrayal of women in the Renaissance paintings of German artist, Lucas Cranach the Elder. This collection of sleek and structured silhouettes is a strict evolution from previous seasons. Necklines are higher, hemlines lower, with re-interpretations of corsetry throughout. While Koma’s trademark thigh-grazing A-line skirts and tailored dresses spliced with leather still underpin the collection, there is a stronger, more masculine edge. Boxy outerwear and loose fitting trousers mark a change in direction, with the arm proving the new erroneous zone. The opposition between the vertical and the horizontal is central– bold leather strips are hand-woven into exquisite jackets and dresses. A striking combination of supple leather, glossy pony skin and flocked chiffon demands attention, but it’s the electric shocks of brightviolet, pure cream, cobalt blue and steely grey that make major impact. Koma and the women he

designs for are calm and in-control. WHISTLES For Autumn/Winter 2014, Whistles presented a collection focused on eveningwear. Whether the Whistles woman is staying in or going out, she dresses in soft textures, oversized shapes, fluid lines and blurred prints. Sweaters are worn cropped and loosely fitted, or tucked in casually. Some with an oversized roll neck or ribbed panelling. Combined with wide leg relaxed trousers or skirts that fall to the mid calf. Outerwear is deliberately oversized. Overcoats come in soft wools in shades of blue, green and grey. Patterned with large checks that give a feeling of a blanket enveloping the wearer with warmth. Lilac becomes a key colour for eveningwear. A thick pelted faux fur coat is the ultimate in luxurious comfort. Navy and black are also staple colours, in rich faux ponyskin or heavy satin fabrications, they are brought up to date in a bandeau top that finishes below the waist or a dress with it’s origins in sportswear detailing, a racer back flows in to a full skirt. Bags are boxy and compact or elongated and soft. Clutches feature soft faux fur bracelets. So now we can look forward to the trends that will be hitting the high streets for Autumn and Winter 2014, and re-create the look so stylishly presented on the catwalk. London Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors. London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy,Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. F E AT U R E

Which body contouring treatment is right for me? With so many treatment options available today, it can be very confusing for consumers to choose the right treatment for their body. Manufacturers can often over promise and the treatments under deliver - all at the expense of your hardearned cash. So how do you choose the best option? Dr Ravi Jain of Riverbanks Clinic explains

T

he demand for body contouring is increasing all the time and so much so that new systems are finding there way to UK shores on a daily basis. Many systems are cheap imitations of higher quality systems and clinics may invest in the less expensive systems so that they can increase their profit. However, often these systems leave the clinics and their clients out of pocket with poor results and support. Surgery vs Non-Invasive treatments Surgical solutions to body contouring such as liposuction and tummy tucks have long been the only solution to address many peoples concerns, but these obviously have their significant risks, prices and relatively long recovery periods. However, in the right hands they can produce life changing results and we see that frequently at Riverbanks clinic, particularly with our VASER Lipo body sculpting system. VASER Lipo is a form of liposuction which allows careful sculpting of body fat to help create athletic looking bodies. It is extremely versatile and can be used in delicate areas such as the chin, neck and inner thighs as well as the more popular tummies, waistlines, muffin tops and outer thighs and arms (bingo wings). It is best carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation to maximise your comfort and allow the surgeon to give you the best shape possible. There is usually time

40 MARCH2014

off work required and this can be between 1-7 days depending on the extent of your surgery. Compression garments need to be worn for several weeks to minimise swelling and help reshape your new body. And many patients benefit from some aftercare therapy in the first couple of weeks after their surgery. Despite these significant inconveniences to daily life, VASER Lipo is an extremely popular treatment of choice as it often produces life changing results - and at Riverbanks we are proud to have a 97% patient satisfaction rate over the last 4 years! The holy grail for many clinics is to find a non-surgical system that produces results as close as possible to surgical liposuction. This has not been possible up until very recently with the introduction of fat freezing systems such as the Cooltech which is produce in Barcelona and carries a CE-Medical mark, confirming its high quality. Cooltech is a unique system which comfortably treats stubborn pockets of fat in little over an hour which you simply lie there and read your magazine or iPad. The fat is frozen to -8C via a cooling cup placed on your skin for 70 minutes. Cooltech is best applied to tummies and love handles, outer thighs, inner thighs and back rolls. The best bit about Cooltech is that most of our patients have only needed an treated just once. It is only the fuller patients that have required 2-3 sessions.

F E AT U R E The way the cooling is applied is critical for good and effective results.I have seen plenty unsatisfactory patients who have had some very well marketed fat freezing systems which have either caused excessive deformities, or have done absolutely nothing over several treatments. This is why it is absolutely critical that you are given the right advice at the start. In my practice I have seen a huge demand for the treatment as it really can offer results similar to liposuction in many patients. I was extremely sceptical about the treatment which is why I took two years to research all the different systems before choosing Cooltech for my patients. I continue to be amazed by its results and we have not had a single unhappy patient! What is also interesting is that the only clinics which have chosen Cooltech are those of top plastic surgeons and aesthetic doctors and this is a testament to the high quality and efficacy of the treatment. MedContour is another non-invasive system for reducing the appearance of fat but it particularly excels at managing cellulite. And it is for this reason that our patients choose it about 2 months before any sunny holidays. 6 weekly sessions of ultrasonic fat dissolving and lymphatic massage produce long lasting results, reducing cellulite and also reducing waistlines. The treatments are very relaxing and many patients gradually drift off into a light nap during a treatment by one of my therapists.

BEFORE MEDCONTOUR TREATMENT

AFTER MEDCONTOUR TREATMENT

Medcontour is an Italian system, with a CE- Mark and we have found that when combined with Cooltech, you get the best possible nonsurgical fat reduction treatment available. The only draw back with Medcontour is that it requires 6 weekly treatments, whereas Cooltech is potentially just one treatment. So which treatment is best for me? Cellulite

Tips to help you choose the right treatment 1. Ask to see before and after photos - make sure the lighting is the same in the two sets of photos as flashguns can make cellulite and lines & Wrinkles look better even without a treatment. Make sure that the photos are results performed by the clinic and even better the practitioner who will be treating you. 2. Find out where the system is manufactured - many very well marketed systems are rebadged cheap imports from the far east and are low quality and could actually harm you. European and US made systems are generally of higher quality and will have met higher standards. 3. Check the system has a CE-Medical Mark - this is a higher standard set by the European regulatory authorities to show that the system is suitable for medical use. American systems will have FDA approval. 4. Ask How many treatments are needed - make sure that

this is understood right from the beginning so that you can budget and set your expectations accordingly 5. Ask about side effects - in the more effective treatments there maybe some side effects which should be explained to you before hand. If there are no side effects, usually the treatment is ineffective. 6. What is the recovery like - check to see if any aftercare is needed, any dietary requirements are necessary and if any compression garments need to be worn. 7. Meet the surgeon - Make sure you have a full consultation with the surgeon performing any surgery on you, before you decide to have treatment and not just on the day of surgery. Good clinical practice guidelines recommend a 14 day cooling off period. 8. Ask for a written quote before treatment and avoid any time-limited offers for surgery. Competitions for cosmetic surgery is frowned up by the regulators.

Stop the clock with good skincare habits. Lisa Haynes reveals some surprising ways to slow down the ageing process.

FACE THE FACTS

A

nti-ageing isn’t just down to gene pools and preventative potions. Everyday skincare sins could be interfering with your war against wrinkles without you even knowing. Just 16% of women embrace ageing, according to a recent UK Confidence Index by L’Oreal. After grey hair, wrinkles and dark under-eye circles came top in a list of the physical factors that make women feel less confident. “Doing the wrong things can speed up your skin’s ageing process, and you might be surprised at what some of those no-nos are,” says American dermatologist Dr Tess Mauricio. Sidestep skin pitfalls by avoiding these surprising ageing antagonists.

It’s best to use your phone in hands-free mode,” advises Mauricio. The same principles apply to glasses and sunglasses, which can harbour sweat and germs. “Bacteria can grow on the frame that will sit directly on your facial skin for an extended period of time. Aim to use anti-bacterial wipes before putting them on each day.” Too laTe? Beauty bulletin :: Just brows-ing Women in the UK spend a whopping £2.3 billion a year perfecting their eyebrows. Almost a fifth of British women (19%) are spending more than £10 a month on brow maintenance, according to a recent survey by QVC to mark the exclusive launch of Benefit Gimme Brow Gel. One in eight (13%) spend upwards of 30 minutes a week perfecting their arches, amounting to over one whole day (26 hours) per year. Repeatedly losing and gaining weight can take its toll on your face’s elasticity, leaving behind jowls and sagging. Mauricio says: “Packing on pounds can make your skin look plumper on the surface, but carrying excess weight can cause your body’s levels of insulin and cortisol to rise, which can break down collagen. “You’ll see increased sagging from putting on and keeping on as little as 10-15 extra pounds, and loss of facial fat can cause sagging and a gaunt, aged appearance.” Maintain a healthy weight with proper diet and exercise, aiming to keep your weight in the ‘normal’ range, with a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9. I’m a self-confessed hair dye addict. Blonde, red, even blue - you name it, I’ve tried it. So when I get the chance to use L’Oreal Paris Preference Wild Ombres, to give myself copper tips - minus the hefty salon price tag - I can’t resist. The range is designed to give your hair a two-tone effect, meaning you can dip-dye as much or as little of your locks as you want with a brush-on action. After mixing the colour and cream, I chose to apply the dye from below the earlobes. Then, I simply used the brush to swipe along to the ends of my hair. It’s easy to see where it’s been applied and, even with thick, long hair, there’s enough to ensure every strand’s covered. There’s no drip, no mess, and there’s even a nourishing conditioner to use afterwards. But once I wash off the dye, I have to admit, I’m pretty shocked - the copper’s extremely bright - not for wallflowers! But I love bright and bold, so I’m happy. Those expecting a more natural colour could be disappointed. You also won’t get the graduating ‘fade’ effect as shown on the box. To achieve that, you need to apply to ends for ten minutes first, and then progress upwards, so that the dye’s on some parts for longer. Overall though, it’s a great product which couldn’t be easier to use, and should appeal to anyone wanting to create a trendy, unique look for less than a tenner, without the worry of roots creeping through. KITCHENS ARE THE NEW LIVING ROOMS

On average, people spend from £8,000 to a massive £20,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space…so depending on the price range, what can that buy you? CHOOSING A THEME FOR YOUR KITCHEN Contemporary kitchens The sleek look that comes hand in hand with a contemporary kitchen will provide instant gratification. The practical use of space allows for more movement in the kitchen and provides easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment as you prepare those mouth-watering dishes. Also, contemporary colours provide a more open feeling which adds into the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.

French country kitchen This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifully-turned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate on the floor, black or cream enamel Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, so choose an antique-style armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood as a focal point. Hang copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware. Shaker Style kitchen The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, MARCH2014 3

K I TC H E N GU I D E

pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in.

Valli & Valli have handles to die for. Small handles generally don’t work, but chrome is effective and never dates.

Retro Kitchen A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points.

Worktops Avoid wood near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and be warned, glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Consider twin-edged worktops that look like glass, but are laminate. Corian is good for the seamless look. Designers say there’s nothing they can’t do with it – sinks of the same material, coved upstands and so on. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. For cheaper ways to get the wow factor, mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces.

LAYOUT

KITCHEN FLOORING

Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. There are people who want to frame pictures, wash dogs, even do keep fit in their kitchens. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multi-purpose – somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. “The vivacious party animal” needs a U-shaped kitchen with island in the middle and open ended for social gathering, for example. “The Good Life fans” prefers a big L-shaped layout with a range-style cooker, large fridge and freezer and large farmhouse table. “The London weekday bolthole” needs galley-style layout with plenty of wall storage cabinets because most of the below surface cupboards are filled with appliances and gadgets. Meanwhile the “pony club set” loves a free-standing pantry offset to a wrap-around kitchen with peninsula and, of course, an Aga.

To put on a fantastic floor show, do your homework first. Start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards.

Cabinets Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours which, incidentally, rarely work in small kitchens. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Hettich and Hefale have a good selection with timeless clean lines and if you’re feeling flush, 4 MARCH2014

Vinyl flooring Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most cost-effective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner. Stone or slate Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning

K I TC H E N GU I D E

products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you. Laminate This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer. Hardwood A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again. Ceramic tiles A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating.

KITCHEN LIGHTING These days, the kitchen is a hub of activity where we do more than just whip up the family’s meals, so your lighting has to be flexible: illuminating work stations for cooking and offering a warm, welcoming glow for dining and entertaining. However, don’t attempt the electrics yourself – this is one area of expertise that requires the services of an accredited professional. This is also the perfect time to have an electrician fit extra sockets and a plumber to do any necessary work. Task Lighting Safety must come first in any kitchen as you’re constantly using sharp knives,

scalding water and hot pans. For high activity areas where you’ll be preparing food you need plenty of illumination, so work out which areas you’ll be using for practical purposes and install task lighting – i.e., focused, directional, bright light. To avoid task lights throwing shadows over your work surfaces, make sure you position them directly above or slightly in front of where you stand to prepare food. The best place is on the wall or below cupboards. Install your task lighting on a different circuit than your mood lighting to give you more flexibility in your lighting scheme. Downlights Downlights provide a light that washes over your kitchen to provide a general ambient glow. Choose halogen lights if you like clean, sparkling white illumination and put them on a dimmer switch so you can adjust the clarity to change the mood in the room. If you install more than one dimmer, you can create a variety of lighting effects – almost like building layers of light to give depth and warmth to the kitchen. Light at different levels Think of lighting as a design tool to emphasise or detract from good or bad features in a room. For example, if you have a really high ceiling which looks gloomy, use it to its best advantage by installing uplights on the top of kitchen cabinets to throw a general ambient light over the whole room. This will reduce your need for downlights, too. And if your kitchen is galley-style or cramped, choose downlights such as John Cullen’s Polestar - it gives a warm glow to the room and bounces light around, giving the feeling of space. Think about using light down near the floor, too, to wash a glow over the floor. If you have a central island, install lights in the plinth so it appears to float Light for decoration If you have features in your kitchen that are particularly attractive, show them off using light. Draw attention to shelves by installing lights underneath; fit downlights into glass display cabinets to show off a collection of china; or use picture lights on the wall to draw the eye to a beautiful print or poster. If you’re getting a kitchen made specially for you, a truly bespoke kitchen, it will be tailor made for both the space and you. For pure luxury, this is the best that money can buy.

So you can create your own dream kitchen! MARCH2014 5

Having completed a vast number of extensions in London alone, we have the skills and experience required to ensure a smooth and professional service from conception through to completion and our longevity in the industry has afforded us the added luxury of being able to filter our suppliers and work force, an area where many other businesses fall short. The expertise required from the very first moment the pen touches the paper, to the moment where the very last screw has been turned should not be underestimated. We feel that this expertise is visible within our creations and plain for all to see. Using established manufactures in England and Europe, we are able to supply furniture for any room in the house. From kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms to snooker rooms, wet rooms, libraries and saunas – no project is too small or too large. Repeat customers are a fairly common sight within our showrooms, often entrusting us with their homes and leaving on long vacations, only to return

to a completed and pristine project. We find that this level of trust is not only acquired by our staff in the showroom but also by our workforce who are on-site, a testament to their professionalism and individual characters. With two beautiful showrooms in London and an ever growing network of architects, designers and property developers, we welcome individuals to our showrooms to experience firsthand our work and discuss future projects. We offer a no obligation consultation service which is thorough and precise, enabling our customers to have a clear understanding of our potential. The Importance of Good Design in the Home

G

ood design is important in all aspects of life and especially in our homes where we will often use a product on a daily basis; it should mean that the products we buy and use are both aesthetically pleasing but also fit for their intended purpose. But good design is sometimes hard to judge – we have probably all bought a beautiful item at some point, attracted by its looks, that turned out to be disappointing in the way it functioned or in how well it lasted. Most of us would happily buy a piece of artwork simply for its aesthetic value because it’s only purpose is to look good but when a product also has to fulfil a function then good design requires it to be more than just beautiful. So there is more to consider than simply aesthetics and good function; something must also work in a way that is pleasing to use. An item that serves its purpose but is awkward and difficult to use is certainly not a well-designed product. Good design should also be long-lasting both in terms of the quality of the product, the attention to the finer details and its enduring appeal. A highly fashionable item will rapidly lose its appeal but a well-designed one will never appear dated, as evidenced by the resurgence in popularity of furniture from the 50s and 60s. Of course, we expect good design when we buy a “designer” label product for our home – we expect something beautiful and useful and increasingly we have been buying into the European lifestyle of iconic designers such as Philippe Starck and the home ranges of prestigious designer clothing brands such as Versace. High-end designer home products are more than just accessories; they encompass furniture, lighting and practical items such as bathroom sanitary ware and tiles. The designer bathroom products and tiles being produced by internationally recognised brands such as Philippe Starck and Versace fulfil the criteria of good design because they are both gorgeous 12 MARCH2014

to look at but fulfil a very practical function using technical innovation to ensure they continue to fulfil their function for many years. Bathroom tiles are both practical and decorative objects that can create a stunning visual impact but, unlike a work of art, they also create a backdrop that allows other aspects of a luxury bathroom to shine through. They offer the opportunity to create a calming, relaxing space reminiscent of a boutique hotel in our own homes or they offer the opportunity to be bold and create something quite unique. Whether your preference is for interior design that veers towards understated minimalism or towards something more daring, there are designer products that will enable you to express your individuality. Colour, whether muted or bold, is more important than ever in our homes; no longer are we satisfied with a limited colour palette we now want a wide choice so we can select just the right shade for our personal living spaces. Vivid colours are being used to make a dramatic statement such as in the bathroom below where textured red porcelain tiles from Italian manufacturer Gardenia have helped to create a distinctive, individual space. Italian products are synonymous with exceptional design quality and, as such, many of the designer tiles available from leading retailers such as Décor Tiles and Floors are produced in Italy. But if Italian designer tiles do not fit your requirements or budget there is a huge range of tiles in an astonishing variety of colours, patterns and textures from reputable manufacturers across the globe. The classic Indoor Pool House collection, created from concept to completion by Origin Leisure Healthy relaxation for your family. Added fun and value to your home life.

O

rigin is Britain’s longest established indoor pool company. Since 1982 they have been in the forefront of this specialist design area, and have a unique understanding of the technology to go with it. They are proud of their long-serving team of expert designers and builders, who are committed to doing a first class job, with as little disruption to your life and your property as possible, in the quickest achievable time. Result? You and your family will be in the swim sooner, in your very own leisure complex that will bring you daily fun, fitness and a secure feeling that your investment has added considerably to the value of your home life. Origin has developed its product range from simple pine chalets in the seventies, to the sophisticated leisure buildings they build today. The recipe is still broadly the same - create a carefully considered, practical, solid and fantastic looking building … and add a beautifully proportioned, perfectly built heated swimming pool. Featured here is a selection of Origin’s recent projects, showing the advantages of some of the company’s most popular designs. In every case the styling has been adapted to suit its surroundings, and the client’s taste, perfectly. These changes are often as simple as fitting in with the colour and texture of the home, or as complex as adding changing rooms, games rooms, or a unique pool shape. Origin’s experience, expertise and service offers you a wealth of choice. And it is comforting to know that the company’s teams of experts handle every element of the whole complex and exacting process internally.

Origin’s 10% VAT offer has been extended! The company’s state of the art Olympic indoor pool house range can be yours with only 10% VAT.

68 MARCH2014

Origin’s very successful Olympic range was originally inspired by London’s year of triumph - and for that reason the Olympic has a healthy and sporty feel. Not only can you benefit from the obvious advantages of swimming every day, whatever the weather, but you can also enjoy the built-in gym area and the starter exercise equipment that the company supply. The Olympic is a state-of-the-art range of pool houses, making good use of Origin’s thirty years of experience, and in-depth knowledge of the newest materials and building techniques. The concept of the Olympic is the culmination of the Origin design team’s development and experience to date. For that reason the company is extending their 10% VAT offer, so whatever the Chancellor gets up to, they will only charge you 10% - which would make a considerable difference to the cost of this, the most modern pool house on the market. Talk to Origin now, and get things moving. The unique 10% VAT offer will only apply for a short time. The all-new Olympic range starts at £135,950.

The ever-popular Barn range has had a big design makeover. Origin’s designers have been hard at work, and you’ll see the results soon…

Is it all possible? Take advantage of Origin’s Feasibility Study offer… For a limited period, Origin is prepared to research the feasibility of a pool house for your home without charge.

Origin’s Barn style indoor pool houses have made a great impact on the business for several years now - so the teams of designers and architects decided it was time to re-visit this unique and popular concept. Many details have been changed and refined, whilst not interfering with the delightful look of this rurally inspired masterpiece. The new Barn is even more of a contrast than it used to be. To observe the structure from the outside is to look at a building that could have been part of the country landscape for years. Step inside and you’re in another world - a beautiful heated pool subtly glowing, maybe a changing room, gently sliding bifold doors - all designed for your family’s fun, health and comfort. Many improvements to Origin’s Barn range have been made, without losing the essential spirit of this lovely piece of craftsmanship. The Barn indoor pool house can be part of your life for as little as £142,500.

This is how the Origin process works… At the first meeting one of Origin’s directors establish what you will expect from your project, and whether or not your pool room will need planning permission. In many cases they do not. Then you will be introduced to the range - Origin’s beautiful pool houses will be just the inspiration for what will be a truly individual project.

They do all the necessary searches and report back to you. This means you can dip your toe into the idea of investing in an Origin pool building without committing yourself. The company’s experts will appraise the project potential, listen to your wish list, examine just how easy it could be to obtain planning permission, suggest how to make the best use of the available space, recommend the building size, propose a budget and set you onto a problem free course. Simply send Origin your address and maybe a digital photograph of the area where your pool house could be. And talk to Fiona on 01895 823366. She’ll point you in the right direction!

Origin’s new brochures. The Origin Indoor Pool Book shows a wealth of the company’s finest moments, and is an easy way to comprehend the styles and looks of the different models. The Origin Outdoor Pool Book shows an array of sizes, shapes and ideas that the company has to offer for swimming in the open air. Ring 01895 823366 or Email fiona@originleisure.com for your brochure pack. It’s a great introduction to an exciting new way of life…

Clients add their own thoughts, their own requirements, and end up with leisure facilities that suit their homes, families and lifestyles flawlessly. The company then commences what will be a beginning-toend process, totally handled by their own people. Origin has a number of ranges with pool building designs that fit perfectly into a garden setting, or the architects can create individual concepts, encompassing every idea the client has, and building in the pick of the brightest and newest ideas Origin’s experts, and the industry, has to offer. The plans are finalised, architectural drawings are produced, and the company works with you on materials and finishes, before the building process begins. Ground works are completed with the minimum of fuss. The heated pool is installed and the finished building is constructed. Your preferences of materials and finish are built in, and add-ons of your choice such as a spa, shower room or maybe a games area are incorporated.

Contact us For full details of all Origin’s pools and pool houses the very best way to start things off is to get in touch with Fiona on 01895 823366, email is fiona@originleisure.com Fiona will send you brochures, fill you in with all the details, and even arrange for you to meet one of Origin’s directors on site to get the whole process going.
