Welcome to our June issue... The perfect summer celebration, with music, Spitfire, cannons, cavalry and fireworks, returns to Hatfield House on Saturday 19 July 2014. In addition to a full orchestral programme of sublime classical music, this unique open-air picnic concert features a carefully choreographed Spitfire aerial display, ground shaking live cannon fire, breath-taking cavalry displays and a stunning firework finale, all set in the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Oak Field in the leafy parkland of Hatfield House. Few would disagree with the view of a Harpenden Town Councillor that Harpenden Common is ‘the jewel in the town’s crown.’ The vast tract of common grassland, sweeping you into the town centre as you approach from the south, is home to a golf club, a cricket club and the occasional fair and circus, yet still provides acres of recreational space for residents and visitors. But, since 1994, for one day a year, this idyllic scene is interrupted for a few hours for what has become the biggest classic car show of its kind in Britain.

he perfect summer celebration, with music, Spitfire, cannons, cavalry and fireworks, returns to Hatfield House on Saturday 19 July 2014. This year the thrilling and ever popular mounted skill-at-arms display by an expert cavalry troop will be carried out in WW1 regalia to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, just one of many elements in the 2014 programme that will pay homage to this important historical anniversary. Battle Promenaders will also be treated to the Battle Proms signature piece – Beethoven’s Battle Symphony – performed as he intended with the full complement of 193 live firing cannon providing a thunderous percussion! Conducted by Douglas Coombes and performed by the New English Concert Orchestra, the programme will also include soul-stirring classical favourites suited to the grandeur of the historic settings. From Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture (which also gets the ‘Battle Proms treatment’ of live cannon fire) to a sing-along finale packed with all the prom favourites such as Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia. Rhodes will be hosting the event, there will be a virtuoso performance of Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1 as young clarinettist Jordan Black makes his first Battle Proms appearance. We are delighted to welcome back superb soprano Denise Leigh who will perform enchanting arias before bringing the finale to life - and the crowd to their feet – as the spectacular firework display lights up the summer sky. The Battle Proms is proud to support Combat Stress: the Veterans’ Mental Health Charity, which specialises in helping veterans of the Armed Forces and Merchant Navy with psychological injuries caused through service to their country. Over recent years a phenomenal £166,250 has been raised by audience contributions and contributions from the Battle Proms concert profits for this important cause. “We are delighted to be supporting Combat Stress once again this year” said Emma Dexter, Marketing Manager for The Battle Proms, “particularly since the organisation was founded 95 years ago as a direct result of World War One, the start of which is very much in all our minds this year.” Widely regarded as one of the most exciting summer proms concerts in the country, this is an event that fans return to year after year, to enjoy a memorable night out with friends or for a significant celebration. Tickets are currently £35 for adults and £17 for children. Adult tickets on the day are £40 subject to availability. The biggest ever celebration of global classical music
B
BC Proms have announced the wide-ranging programme of events planned for its 120th season. The festival promises many of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. Global classical music is at the heart of the 2014 Proms with more international orchestras performing than ever before. 10 international ensembles appear for the first time including orchestras from China, Greece, Iceland, Lapland, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea and Turkey. Some of the world’s most renowned orchestras return including the Berlin Philharmoniker, Cleveland Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. With Promming tickets remaining at £5 for the 9th year running, the finest music from around the globe is made accessible for the widest audience. A century after the outbreak of the First World War the Proms reflects on the music, musicians and musical legacy of the Great War. Works by composers who lost their lives in the trenches, sit alongside the music of composers writing years after the conflict, including Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, and Sally Beamish’s violin concerto inspired by Erich Maria Remarque’s novel All Quiet on the Western Front. On 4 August, marking the day Britain entered the war, there will be a special Late Night Prom featuring the second of two world premieres by the late John Tavener. Collaborating with the National Theatre, the War Horse Prom features lifesize puppets from the internationally acclaimed production, alongside music performed by the Proms Military Wives Choir directed by Gareth Malone.
The Proms continues to offer a wide range of music with exciting debut performances by Paloma Faith and Rufus Wainwright. The Pet Shop Boys 1 0 JUNE 2 0 1 4

Folk by the oak Guitar Great Richard Thompson and Brit Award winner Beth Orton complete the line-up for Folk by the Oak 2014
F
olk by the Oak returns for its 7th annual festival on Sunday 20 July at Hatfield House, and critically acclaimed guitarist Richard Thompson will be joining their ‘line-up of headliners’ for this one day festival of captivating music featuring some of the world finest folk musicians.
Richard, named one of Rolling Stone’s Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, is one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the 60’s Richard and his mates virtually invented British Folk Rock. Also joining the line-up is Brit Award winner Beth Orton. Known for her “folktronica” sound, which mixes elements of folk and electronica, Beth was initially recognised for her collaborations with William Orbit and the Chemical Brothers in the mid1990s. With the release of the albums Central Reservation (1999) and the 2002 UK top 10 album Daybreaker, Beth developed a devoted fan base, many of whom will be delighted with this rare opportunity to see her at a UK festival this summer. Many of you will have heard folk world favourite Seth Lakeman feature in the recent BBC Radio 2 D-Day anniversary concert, and Folk by the Oak are delighted to confirm he will also be once again gracing their stage this year. Widely regarded as the UK’s foremost folk singer songwriter, Seth has been credited with breaking down perceptions and barriers often associated with folk music and its acceptance in the mainstream. Expect a captivating, energetic and undeniably compelling live show from award-winning Seth and his superbly talented band. Also on the Main stage, Kathryn Tickell (BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year 2013) will perform with her folk-classical ensemble ‘The Side’, while The Elizanbethan Session (a unique set, bringing together 8 artists including BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year Bella Hardy) will perform 12 june2014
the epilogue to a very special project. Commissioned by Folk by the Oak and the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) The Elizabethan Session project created new music inspired by the Elizabethan era and recently premiered to a packed house and rave reviews at the Old Palace in Hatfield. Two stunning duos complete the line-up: Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita, winners of the prestigious fRoots Album of the Year and nominated for two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards promise a heavenly performance, while the jewel-like voice of Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker’s musical tact and mastery of the guitar produce another a compelling act and a fine addition to the Folk by the Oak line up for 2014. Now a firmly established feature of Folk by the Oak, the Acorn Stage has grown! This year it will be bigger and better platform for a new generation of folk musicians, featuring Paper Aeroplanes, Keston Cobblers’ Club, Jaywalkers, Salt House, Maz O’Connor and the London Youth Folk Ensemble. The Folk by the Oak team continue their tradition of ensuring this is a great day out for the whole family, with an ever expanding craft tent, workshops, children’s activities, storytelling, circus skills, and real ale bar, music stalls, vintage stalls, recycled gifts and delicious food. And they continue to encourage you to bring your own food and drink along and make yourself at home. It’s a compact and leafy site with one main stage so you can pick a grassy spot, kick back and enjoy a whole day of top quality live music. Advance tickets are £36 for adults (£40 on the day subject to availability), children aged 5-15 are £17 at all times (under 5s are free). Advance family passes for 2 adults and 2children are just £98 (not available on the day). For information and to book tickets: www.folkbytheoak.com

115 Years
Fishpools Anniversary This spring local furniture retailer, Fishpools, is celebrating a remarkable milestone; its 115 year anniversary. Over a century since it first opened and four generations on, Fishpools has consistently grown and today are proud to be recognised as the largest quality furniture store in the South East of England offering an extensive range of stylish products for the home and garden.
E
stablished in 1899, its founder Ernest Fishpool borrowed just £85 to set up his first shop originally selling a small collection of furniture and clothes to the public. Finding success in 1906 with business booming, Ernest took over the lease of 109-115 High Street, Waltham Cross which over the years has expanded into the impressive 62,000 square foot of space that can be found on the site today. By the mid 1990’s, Ernest Fishpool had married and started a family, which would go on to build up what is now a reputable family firm. Extremely passionate, Ernest’s hands-on approach and innovative notions helped to drive the business forward and into great success. Just after World War One Ernest grew the business by investing in two old army ambulances which were converted into furniture delivery vehicles. In due time, both of Ernest’s sons, Clarence and Howard joined their father at the firm and made it a real family affair! Now under the care of current Managing Director and fourth generation of the Fishpool family, Simon Fishpool took over the running of the business in 2003 and has since created further enthusiasm around the brand by adding to its superb offerings. In 2004, Simon unveiled a major expansion plan which included a substantial office development to accommodate the company’s 200 plus employees along with a breath-taking showroom expansion. With this extra space came a wealth of exciting new furniture collections, as well as the introduction of decorative homewares and accessories to provide a complete shopping experience to meet the needs of discerning shoppers. Time doesn’t stand still for Fishpools and today sees the furniture retailer committed more than ever to innovation in all areas of the business, striving constantly to provide the highest levels of quality, value and service. With over 200 room sets offering collections from classic to contemporary, minimal to vintage and rustic to romantic, the capacious showroom is the perfect place to be inspired. Constantly updated to offer on trend solutions, its layout plays host to a variety of handpicked product styles

and interior looks that are waiting to be discovered and explored. It doesn’t stop there; Fishpools also has an online shop (www.fishpools.co.uk) that allows shoppers to buy with ease from the comfort of their own home. From furniture, carpets, lighting, upholstery, artwork, accessories and cookware; you name it, Fishpools will have it! Over the next year, Fishpools will be extending their ranges, including launching new collections for their summer sale which starts on the 6th June. They’ll also continue to provide customers with inspiration, ideas and expert advice with the introduction of their new ‘Get the Look’ mailers – a guide to the latest interiors trends, packed with helpful tips and tricks! Fishpools dedication to traditional family values doesn’t stop in the store. Their recently launched ‘Family Values’ programme represents their commitment to give something back and involve the local community surrounding the Waltham Cross store. For 2014, Fishpools have joined forces with two brilliant local charities, Teens Unite Fighting Cancer and Nordoff Robbins, to help raise awareness and meet their fundraising targets. Fishpools aims to raise £5,000 for each charitable organisation Teens Unite and Nordoff Robbins by the end of 2014. Recent fundraising initiative sees Fishpools donating £5 from sales of key items throughout the store, allowing customers to help raise money for good causes by simply treating themselves to a stylish sofa or designer dining table. A charity bake sale was also held in the Waltham Cross showroom in collaboration with Teens Unite Fighting Charity, which was a great success and enjoyed by all. To celebrate the anniversary, Fishpools will be hosting competitions and fund raising events for its chosen charity partners throughout 2014. You can keep up to date by visiting fishpools.co.uk for more information. Fishpools would like to thank all of its customers for their ongoing support since 1899, and look forward to welcoming shoppers back in the future. Fishpools - www.fishpools.co.uk - 01992 63 64 65

Where is your will?
magine… your old friend Johnny has died unexpectedly in a nasty accident. He told you some time ago that he had made a Will and you had agreed to be the executor. He was not married and had no children and you know that he wanted to leave his substantial wealth to his friends, his sports club and to favourite charities. But where is the Will? You must find it because, under the Intestacy Rules (which apply if you don’t leave a Will), his whole estate, after a large inheritance tax bill, will go to his brother Nick. He is a gambler and useless with money, and is the last person Johnny would want his estate to go to. You look through Johnny’s papers but you cannot find the Will or any correspondence about it. You ask your own solicitor, Richard, for advice, who says, let’s try Certainty, and explains. Certainty is a company that maintains a database of Wills made by solicitors. Certainty does not hold the actual Wills but has a record of when and where they were made. As a relatively new company (established less than 10 years ago), it does not know where every Will is kept but the database now exceeds 5 million Wills, and is growing rapidly. Use of its services is promoted by the Law Society, insurance companies and many prominent lawyers. Even if Johnny’s Will is not on the database, Certainty provides a quick and effective way of searching over hundreds of firms of solicitors in areas where Johnny lived and worked. For a modest fee, Richard finds that Johnny’s Will is stored with solicitors in his home town. Certainty doesn’t tell Richard where the Will is, but they inform Johnny’s solicitor that Richard is looking for it and the solicitors are soon in touch. Richard also helps you with sorting out Johnny’s estate. Very little inheritance tax is paid because the bulk of the estate goes to charity. Johnny’s sports club gets a windfall and his friends receive legacies. Even Nick gets something which he blows at the Derby but at least has some fun.
16 june2014
If you make your Will with Taylor Walton, we strongly recommend that it is registered with Certainty. This is your choice, but if you go ahead, you will have the peace of mind that your family and friends can track down your Will, even if you don’t tell them where it is. You may change solicitor or move out of the area and forget to tell us (as many people do), so we may lose track of you but still have your Will in our strong room. Certainty can come to the rescue. If you want Taylor Walton to prepare a new Will for you, there will be no additional charge for registering it with Certainty. If you already have a Will stored with Taylor Walton, let us know if you want it registered with Certainty, and we will arrange it, at no charge. If now is a good time to update your Will (and when isn’t!), we would be pleased to help. If you would like advice or assistance in relation to Wills and Certainty, please contact Richard Crocker on 01582 765111 or email richard. crocker@taylorwalton.co.uk We offer regular free 15 minute drop-in meetings at our Harpenden and St Albans Offices where you can discuss wills, tax planning and Power of Attorney issues with our experts. O
ne of the most important dates in the British social and International rowing calendars, the Henley Regatta is the epitome of an English summer day and is steeped in history. The Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, except during the two World Wars. The first regatta took place on a single afternoon; however its popularity with the oarsmen extended the race to two days. Later in 1886 the event was extended to three days and in 1906 a further day was added, lengthening the regatta to a four-day event. By 1986 it was further extended to five days proving its popularity with the British public during the summer. Originally staged by the Mayor and people of Henley as a public attraction with a fair and other amusements, the emphasis rapidly changed so that competitive amateur rowing became its main purpose. The Regatta occupies a unique position in the world of rowing. It has its own rules and is not subject to the jurisdiction either of the governing body of rowing in the U.K. (British Rowing) or of the International Rowing Federation, but is proud of the distinction of being officially recognised by both these bodies. The length of the Course is 1 mile 550 yards, which is 112 metres longer than the standard international distance of 2,000 metres. It takes approximately 18 june2014
seven minutes to cover, so there are often two races at once on the course for much of the day. The number of races is, of course, reduced on each successive day, leaving only the Finals to be rowed on the last day. Since 1884 the Henley Regatta has been organised by a self-electing body of Stewards, at present numbering 60, most of whom are well-known and successful rowers and scullers. The Stewards' primary consideration in all their decisions is the best interests of those who are competing in the races. The regatta today is one of the biggest events in the British and International social calendars and sees thousands of spectator’s crowd around the banks of the River Thames every day. The private enclosures are the best way to see all of the sporting action in style and comfort and there is a wide variety on offer from Temple Island to the Stewards Enclosure. One of our favourite private enclosures is the “rhubarb” River Lounge which offers a relaxed, sophisticated and stunning environment. The River Lounge is situated opposite the world famous Temple Island, only yards from the starting line. The famous Temple Island is situated a mile and a half downstream of the picturesque market town of Henley, on one of the most beautiful reaches of the River Thames. Located amidst rolling water meadows and surrounded by wooded hills, it marks the start of the famous
Henley Regatta Course and was a recent feature in the Olympic opening ceremony. The Temple itself is a delightful folly, designed by James Wyatt as a fishing lodge for Fawley Court, the Christopher Wren mansion on the Henley Reach, from which the Temple completed a charming prospect through an avenue of trees and provides a stunning view for the River Lounge and other enclosures. There is no formal dress code in many of the enclosures except the Stewards, however most spectators wear smart clothing with some guests opting for traditional Regatta attire in the form of lounge suits for men and dresses for ladies. Many of the enclosures start the day early including the River Lounge and Temple Island, whereby guests enjoy a delicious champagne and canapé breakfast. The “rhubarb” River Lounge goes further though, by creating beautifully sculptured gardens with alfresco seating and erecting a stunning marquee with a contemporary interior. The lounge serves gourmet cuisine throughout the day, a complimentary bar, live background music, head and neck massages and offers a river cruise on-board the Lilly Anna. River cruises are another great way to see the river and to explore the
Regatta course but make sure you book early to avoid disappointment. Food and drink are as important as the racing during the regatta and there is a wide variety on offer from celebrity chefs to royal caterers across the course. “rhubarb” for example serve a variety of best of British and European menus from canapé and bowl food selections to stunning puddings and mains. Dishes include seasonal produce such as roasted rump of Welsh lamb, boulanger potatoes, green peas “à la Française”, buttered spinach and rosemary jus for a main or a choice of miniature puddings including Tiny Eaton mess, Pimms Royale jelly with summer berries, Mini summer pudding, Scottish raspberries and lemon curd in bitter chocolate pastry tartlet and Sherry trifle. The Regatta is easily accessible from Henley town centre with a quick trip over Henley Bridge towards Maidenhead. Parking is directly to the rear of the enclosures and is well sign posted. Races start from as early as 7.30am on some days and can go onto the early evening. Traffic can be a problem around the Regatta so make sure you leave plenty of time when setting off. Henley Royal Regatta 2014 is being held from Wednesday 2nd July to Sunday 6th July. For more details about The River Lounge enclosure please see www.rhubarb.net/henley.

Celebrating Success
We are delighted to congratulate Gallery Rouge represented artists Kerry Darlington and Antonio Russo for their dual success at the Fine Art Trade Guild Awards 2014.

arlington was acknowledged for the second time as bestselling Artist of The Year, reflecting the unique nature of her resin sealed fairy tales. For the last decade Kerry has built a reputation for her original, decorative designs which became hugely popular, focusing primarily on trees as a symbolic motif as well as nature at large, explaining, “For the Tree of Life Collection, I wanted to create a sophisticated theme and so I decided to explore the idea of precious metals. The Tree of Life design is based on the piece by Gustav Klimt - The trees feel solid, powerful and strong and are full of noise and bright creatures.” In recent times her works have been translated from the relief resin originals into Unique Limited Editions, which are carefully composed to replicate her distinct

aesthetic. Speaking about the process, the artist has commented, “I have designed the raised elements to work as a separate dimension, to confuse the eye and create a flow through each piece. In the abstract work, the layering has been used to create cracks and ravines in the ‘volcanic structure’ of the work.” The emerging talent of abstract painter Antonio Russo was also recognised at the Awards Ceremony, winning the sought after title of Up and Coming Artist which has seen previous recipients go on to flourish in their creative endeavours. Russo crafts his energetic and lively abstract paintings with specific musical harmonies and songs playing at volume – this infuses each work with a distinct aura and rhythm.

Remarkably the artist is colour blind and as such ‘feels’ the sound waves in colour; when asked by American publication ‘The Artist Showcase Magazine’ what he sees when he paints, the artist articulated, “Well not much really because when I put the music on, I’m off, just like a horse at the races, gone! I’m blinded by music and to the place where it takes me, more than being blinded
by colour. When I’m in the zone that’s my heaven I am so into it I can’t see anything, I only realize after the painting is finished what it looks like.”

Rupert Cornes (Consultant), who established RMC Cars in 1994, is excited that RMC Cars are joining forces with The Car Agents Group, a family-run business operating from the newly renovated ex-Pinney’s Mercedes Dealership in Hitchin. “We can see some real benefits for our clients going forward,” said Rupert. “We’ll still provide the same very personal service as before, but can now tap into The Car Agents’ experience in delivering outstanding solutions for selling and buying Sports, Prestige and Classic cars, as well as a much larger selection of stock and a No Sale No Fee service. “On top of that, our clients can also now access an extensive range of services to meet all their car needs, including a Servicing and Maintenance facility with a collection and delivery service, a Car Spa and a Hand Car Wash.’’ After 20 years as Sales Director with Specialist Cars BMW Group, what The Car Agents owner Simon Michell doesn’t know about Sports, Prestige and Classic Cars isn’t worth knowing. He said: “There’s a lot of synergy between our two businesses, which are both founded on high levels of integrity and personal service. Organised by Harpenden Village Rotary Club - Sponsored by Harpenden Town Council
F
ew would disagree with the view of a Harpenden Town Councillor that Harpenden Common is ‘the jewel in the town’s crown.’ The vast tract of common grassland, sweeping you into the town centre as you approach from the south, is home to a golf club, a cricket club and the occasional fair and circus, yet still provides acres of recreational space for residents and visitors. But, since 1994, for one day a year, this idyllic scene is interrupted for a few hours for what has become the biggest classic car show of its kind in Britain. Over the years we’ve had bright sun, clouds and occasional rain but whatever the weather nothing stops most of the pre-registered owners of more than 1000 classic vehicles from driving to Harpenden from all over the UK and beyond to display their cherished vehicles. And there is never any shortage of admirers. Up to 10,000 spectators - residents and visitors - spend hours admiring the mouth-watering collection. Even in damp conditions the attendance is unexpectedly, and gratifyingly, high. A ‘classic’ vehicle should be at least 20 years old but we usually have one or two built around a century ago, such as a 1900 Daimler Type A, and
24 june2014
a 1913 model T Ford. Every decade following is always well represented, too, from Rolls Royces and Maseratis to Austin A40s and Morris Minors. We have even had a Sinclair C5. Classics on the Common was the brain-child of Harpenden resident and Metropolitan Police officer Peter Madden. The idea was born shortly after he bought a 1968 Rover P5B coupe and the first year attracted 125 cars. Since that time the event has grown steadily in popularity with owners and spectators. When Peter Madden decided to make the 2008 Classics his last, he asked the Harpenden Village Rotary Club to take over responsibility for organising and running the event. As members of a service organisation Rotarians are no strangers to running or helping with events and, with more than 40 members, we had a good deal of man- and woman-power to offer. On the day, the Rotarians are at full stretch so we are very grateful to have our numbers boosted by members of our associated club, Harpenden Village Inner Wheel, and St Albans & Harpenden Police Cadets, volunteers from the principal charities supported by the event, members of Harpenden Lions Club and Carpenters Arms Classic Car Club and other volunteers.
Ticket Applications or safety reasons and to ease exit problems we last F year reduced the maximum number of 4-wheel vehicles to 1050. We shall apply the same limit this year. As we reached that capacity number seven weeks before the event in 2013, we strongly recommend you apply early for your ticket. As forewarned last year, for safety reasons we are bringing all motorcycles and scooters into line with 4-wheel vehicles. This year you will need to book in advance and your bike or scooter must be 20 years old or older. Please note: no tickets will be available on the day of the event and any motorcycle or scooter arriving without a ticket will not be admitted. As the costs of organising the event are substantial and could expose us to making a loss should bad weather lead to its cancellation, the entry ticket donation for all vehicles is again non-refundable. The entry ticket donation for motorcycles and scooters has been increased to £5.
Entry Fees M otorcycles and scooters £5 plus SAE C ars and all other vehicles £8 plus SAE S pectators - FREE C harity donations welcome

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2014 Highlights
Chelsea Flower Show bloomed this year with celebrities from all over the world, garden designers, florists, gardeners, traders and garden lovers visiting the Show. The Chelsea Flower show is one of the most famous flower shows in the world, held each year by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The Royal Horticultural Society is one of the world’s leading horticultural organisations and the UK’s leading gardening charity.
T
he flower show sold out in record time, as the UK’s love affair with gardening shows no sign of dimming. Year on year, garden designers at the Chelsea Flower Show are expected to put on a novel show, and this year certainly did not disappoint.
The Queen arrived at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show with Princess Beatrice for a first glimpse before it opened to the public. Her Majesty beamed as she was handed a traditional Thai decoration by the designers of a 100,000-flower display inspired by Thailand. Mary Berry, Stephen Fry, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Paxman, Esther Rantzen, Ben Fogle, Sir Michael Parkinson, Rowan Atkinson, Twiggy, Rob Brydon and Piers Morgan were among those making a VIP appearance at this year’s show. As temperatures soared past 25C - hotter than Rio de Janeiro - gardeners were scrambling to protect their blooms. Many took to covering plants, particularly peonies and irises, in muslin to keep off the rays. Others tied up their flowers and watered them repeatedly to stop them opening too early. Elsewhere at the show were dresses made of flowers, a garden that was being tended by Vikings and a 1914 Potter’s Garden, representing a rural potter going to war in France. Many marked the First World War centenary.
The show gardens included a number of war-themed displays - which were opened with memorial readings by celebrities. Jeremy Paxman read a war-time poem, as did Stephen Fry who spoke at a garden which featured a model war horse. Actors Rowan Atkinson and Nigel Havers read poems by First World War poets who died during the conflict, on the No Man’s Land ABF The Soldiers’ Charity garden. The garden represents a landscape marked by the fighting in northern France, including trenches, a mine crater pond and the yew trees found in war cemeteries. Designer Charlotte Rowe said she was inspired by her own family’s involvement in the First World War, including her grandfather, a second lieutenant with the Middlesex Regiment. She said: ‘The idea behind it is that the land, No Man’s Land, was fought over again and again with the front line moving very little, and the land got completely messed up and churned up. ‘The concept is the healing of the land after severe conflict, and relating it to the human body and spirit.’ Plants used in the garden have been grown by injured soldiers at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court as part of horticultural therapy. THE 2014 AWARDS RHS Vice President and one of Britain’s best loved gardeners, Alan Titchmarsh MBE VMH DL, was presented with a special one off RHS Sunflower Award at the 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments, for his garden feature that celebrated the 50th Anniversary of RHS Britain in Bloom and Alan’s own fifty years in horticulture. As Alan designed the garden feature for the RHS it could not be judged, however the horticultural charity wanted to recognise the immense effort of the Alan and his team, which included designer Kate Gould and landscaper Mark Gregory. Sunflowers form a special part of the Bloom 50th anniversary celebrations, which is why the Society awarded Alan with the RHS Sunflower Award. It is the first time Alan has designed a garden at the world’s most famous horticultural event for almost 30 years, when he was awarded an RHS Gold Medal in 1985 for his Country Kitchen garden. This year Alan joined forces with another RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner, Kate Gould, to create ‘From the Moors to the Sea - a celebration of RHS Britain in Bloom’. On receiving his award, a limited edition Dartington Crystal vase, engraved with a sunflower, from RHS Britain in Bloom judge Jim Buttress, aka ‘Judge Dread’, Alan Titchmarsh, said: “I was told ‘we need you on your garden at half past six’ and I thought ‘what’s gone wrong?’. I had no idea that you would all be here. I’ve had a wonderful time working on this garden, especially with Mark, Kate and the Bloom volunteers. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a very special show for me, it’s always been a special show, I’ve been coming since 1969, and I want to thank all of you for your support and wonderful comments about the garden. Thank you very much indeed.” Some of the 2014 Award Winners include RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year 2014 Daisy Ellen Burgoyne, 22, from Flowers at Frosts in Milton Keynes has

been crowned winner for 2014. The competition required florists aged 16-25 to design and create a ‘fantasy floral dress’, to be worn at a crystal themed ball, with the criteria stating that two thirds of the dress should be made from fresh flowers and plant materials. With a number of stunning creations catching the judges’ eye, Daisy saw off stiff competition from some of the most talented young florists in the UK to take the crown with her intricate and creative design. Best Show Garden 2014 The Laurent-Perrier Garden Designed by Luciano Giubbilei, the garden was formed from a series of defined layers, continuing Luciano’s ongoing interest in texture, form and light. The cool, contemplative design showed the interplay of natural elements with a simple geometric layout. The intention was to stimulate the enjoyment of observation, and to invite exploration of stillness and movement through relationships between the contrasting forms and materials in the garden. The planting featured delicate forms alongside stronger, bolder leaves; the walls combined lustres and materials; the stone surfaces executed with contrasting finishes; the flow and reflection of water giving light and animation. Ursula von Rydingsvard’s timeless forms, constructed in roughly hewn layers of cedar, contributed to the exploration of composition and texture. BBC/RHS Choice Award 2014 Show Garden Hope on the Horizon. Designed by Matt Keightley. A contemplative space that represented the process which injured servicemen and women go through on the road to recovery, designed to support Help for Heroes. Granite blocks symbolising the soldiers’ physical wellbeing and planting reflecting their mental wellbeing. The journey started with a rough, unfinished and overgrown area, evolving through the garden to conclude with a perfectly structured section. An avenue of hornbeams drew attention to a sculpture resembling a horizon, a reminder to the soldiers that they all have a bright future ahead. As well as areas to relax and reflect, the garden also offered focal points along the journey. BBC/RHS Choice Award 2014 & Best Fresh Garden 2014

The Mind’s Eye. Designed by LBC Design. The garden was created for the RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) in partnership with Countryside. The mind’s eye is the human ability to create images or scenes without the need for sight. This garden was designed to stimulate the mind’s eye through a series of contrasting sensory experiences. Designed as a sensory garden for blind and partially sighted people, as well as those with sight, the space challenged the fully sighted viewer by sometimes blurring or distorting the image we expect to see. The garden was divided into four zones: open woodland, damp and shady woodland, prairie border and arid border. Water acted as a unifying element to link and emphasise the architectural features. The centrepiece a beautiful glass cube water feature. Best Artisan Garden 2014 Togenkyo – A Paradise on Earth. Designed by Kazuyuki Ishihara. This garden was inspired by the fable of Togenkyo, a place of beautiful scenery that can help people to forget their troubles and strife, but that once visited cannot be revisited. This beautiful garden was designed to capture the concept of Togenkyo, bringing the idea to a global audience at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The planting scheme featured plenty of greenery, chosen to help fix an image of the garden in visitors’ minds, so that they can take the memory of the scenery away with them to recall and be comforted by when they are feeling troubled. BBC/RHS Choice Award 2014 – Artisan Garden Le Tour de Yorkshire. This garden depicted the Yorkshire rural and urban landscapes through which the Tour de France Grand Départ 2014 will pass in July. The rural side of the garden featured plants that evoke the North York Moors. Boulders formed steps into this section of the design. An elliptical dish of water was the main feature of the urban part of the garden; the surface of the black water in the dish broken by a ring of bubbles. Through the rear stone wall of the garden a striking band of recycled bike wheels, sourced from recycling centres in Yorkshire, references the Grand Départ.
RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2014 A hydrangea making its world debut at Chelsea took the top spot. Hydrangea macrophylla MISS SAORI (‘H20-2’) has been bred in Kyoto by young plantsman Ryoji Irie and named for his fiancé who has since become his wife. It’s a striking double-flowered, mophead cultivar with each floret having deep rose margins softening to white centres and wavy edges. The blooms are long-lasting, produced in June and on first year wood. Their appeal was further heightened by dark foliage. Plants thrive in full sun or semi-shade, suit border or container growing and can also be used as a cut flower. It was entered by Hillier Nurseries & Garden Centres, which also won its 69th consecutive Gold medal at Chelsea in this its 150th anniversary year. RHS membership is for anyone with an interest in gardening. Support the RHS and secure a healthy future for gardening. “50 Years of Fulfilling Dreams… For All Generations” Words Michelle Harris
In the salubrious setting of the elegant Palm Court at Alexandra Palace, the Martyn Gerrard Estate Agency team and colleagues, celebrated 50 successful years in business.
C
hampagne flowed, exquisitely presented gourmet canapés tantalised the taste buds and the ambience was one of proud achievement. Present and past members of staff, long-standing clients and those associated with the business, were animated about their excitement at being invited to this prestigious event. “Having known Martyn for many, many years, I was thrilled to be invited to this wonderful 50 years celebration.” Councillor Melvin Cohen Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet
Martyn Gerrard looked absolutely delighted; testament to an exemplary business formula of outstanding customer service and a dedicated mission statement to support clients for generations. His development of a winning combination for this wonderful success story has probably facilitated his company’s position as one of N/NW London’s premier estate agencies.
where he talked about the firm’s history, how it started and from both a personal and professional perspective, his role as the current managing director. One of his opening lines: “I am Martyn Gerrard’s eldest child… But the first born is Martyn Gerrard Estate Agency.” The practice has always been part of his life within the family and an entity in its own right almost like an older sibling in his father’s heart and soul. It’s this attachment as part of the family unit, which has ensured that Martyn Gerrard’s children are involved in the further development of this dream for generations to follow: Simon Gerrard, managing director, Saul Gerrard, director. Standing together father and sons, clients can be assured of the same calibre of service and dedication for at least the next 50 years. After the seriousness of the speeches, some lighter relief with a terrific and creative version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Filmed with the same technique as the iconic rock opera, the opening scene of four faces on a darkened background as the words were mimed by Messrs Gerrard and co… Into the song, where a piano might have been played, various members of the team slammed their computer keyboards as the song was filmed at the office rather than on an international rock stage.
“...One is invisible. Together we’re invincible.”
Speaking to Alastair Strauss about Martyn Gerrard’s success, he replied: “The culture of the company is that of closeness. Rather like a family network where we work together providing a valuable and appreciated service. We’ve helped one generation of clients, then their children and even grandchildren. It really is about an ongoing service helping people to fulfil their dreams. We’re humble about our achievements and prefer our clients to talk about us and their own experiences.” As a special celebration to support this special year, Martyn Gerrard surprised every 50th sale with a special gift – paying for their house removal service. Clearly as well as their own in-house celebration, the firm has shared with clients too. The team aspires to a collective entity of absolute integrity and goodwill, which is the firm’s mission statement. At 8.30 p.m. the speeches started. Simon Gerrard gave the first presentation
A Brian May look alike (member of staff with a wig!) strumming a toy guitar whilst swinging voluptuous locks of ebony hair as Palm Court bellowed and pulsated, to those wonderful rhythms which had (by the pop group Queen) heralded a change in musical culture. To rapturous applause, the musical theme now wonderfully introduced, the celebrated Moni Tivony (from The Voice) made the stage his own by delivering a knock-out performance. Originally I erroneously thought it was a record and was shocked to see a ginger haired white guy (from Ongar in Essex) sounding like a reggae star. He was fabulous and added a unique WOW factor to an already wonderful evening. Congratulations to Martyn Gerrard, his family and team on a fantastic 50 years - Here’s to many more… june2014 33

ollowing the immense success that was last year’s Classic and Supercar Pageant, the St John’s Wood NW8 Business Association is once again organising an exceptional day of entertainment.
Last year, the pageant attracted thousands of visitors eager to have the opportunity to view cars with a value of close to $100 million, including Clark Gable’s Mercedes 300SL Roadster, a Ferrari 365 California Spyder, a 1928 Speed Six Bentley and Stirling Moss’ 250GT SWB Ferrari. This year they will be hosting some quite exceptional cars including tirling Moss’ simply beautiful C S Type Jaguar, the first car in the world to win a race with disc brakes, when Stirling won the 1952 Grand Prix of Reims: A priceless aluminium Mercedes 300SL ‘Gullwing’. Only 29 of these incredibly rare cars were ever made and this example is the only one to have raced in the famed Mille Miglia:

To entertain the youngsters there will be an even bigger and better funfair, with added rides for teenagers, this time at the southern end of the street, along with a display of Birds of Prey from Fir Tree Falconry and a wandering Jazz band. Altogether a wonderful day out for all the family whatever the age! Which body contouring treatment is right for me? With so many treatment options available today, it can be very confusing for consumers to choose the right treatment for their body. Manufacturers can often over promise and the treatments under deliver - all at the expense of your hardearned cash. So how do you choose the best option? Dr Ravi Jain of Riverbanks Clinic explains
T
he demand for body contouring is increasing all the time and so much so that new systems are finding there way to UK shores on a daily basis. Many systems are cheap imitations of higher quality systems and clinics may invest in the less expensive systems so that they can increase their profit. However, often these systems leave the clinics and their clients out of pocket with poor results and support. Surgery vs Non-Invasive treatments Surgical solutions to body contouring such as liposuction and tummy tucks have long been the only solution to address many peoples concerns, but these obviously have their significant risks, prices and relatively long recovery periods. However, in the right hands they can produce life changing results and we see that frequently at Riverbanks clinic, particularly with our VASER Lipo body sculpting system. VASER Lipo is a form of liposuction which allows careful sculpting of body fat to help create athletic looking bodies. It is extremely versatile and can be used in delicate areas such as the chin, neck and inner thighs as well as the more popular tummies, waistlines, muffin tops and outer thighs and arms (bingo wings). It is best carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation to maximise your comfort and allow the surgeon to give you the best shape possible. There is usually time

off work required and this can be between 1-7 days depending on the extent of your surgery. Compression garments need to be worn for several weeks to minimise swelling and help reshape your new body. And many patients benefit from some aftercare therapy in the first couple of weeks after their surgery. Despite these significant inconveniences to daily life, VASER Lipo is an extremely popular treatment of choice as it often produces life changing results - and at Riverbanks we are proud to have a 97% patient satisfaction rate over the last 4 years! The holy grail for many clinics is to find a non-surgical system that produces results as close as possible to surgical liposuction. This has not been possible up until very recently with the introduction of fat freezing systems such as the Cooltech which is produce in Barcelona and carries a CE-Medical mark, confirming its high quality. Cooltech is a unique system which comfortably treats stubborn pockets of fat in little over an hour which you simply lie there and read your magazine or iPad. The fat is frozen to -8C via a cooling cup placed on your skin for 70 minutes. Cooltech is best applied to tummies and love handles, outer thighs, inner thighs and back rolls. The best bit about Cooltech is that most of our patients have only needed an treated just once. It is only the fuller patients that have required 2-3 sessions.
h e a lt h & b e au t y The way the cooling is applied is critical for good and effective results.I have seen plenty unsatisfactory patients who have had some very well marketed fat freezing systems which have either caused excessive deformities, or have done absolutely nothing over several treatments. This is why it is absolutely critical that you are given the right advice at the start. In my practice I have seen a huge demand for the treatment as it really can offer results similar to liposuction in many patients. I was extremely sceptical about the treatment which is why I took two years to research all the different systems before choosing Cooltech for my patients. I continue to be amazed by its results and we have not had a single unhappy patient! What is also interesting is that the only clinics which have chosen Cooltech are those of top plastic surgeons and aesthetic doctors and this is a testament to the high quality and efficacy of the treatment. MedContour is another non-invasive system for reducing the appearance of fat but it particularly excels at managing cellulite. And it is for this reason that our patients choose it about 2 months before any sunny holidays. 6 weekly sessions of ultrasonic fat dissolving and lymphatic massage produce long lasting results, reducing cellulite and also reducing waistlines. The treatments are very relaxing and many patients gradually drift off into a light nap during a treatment by one of my therapists.

Tips to help you choose the right treatment 1. Ask to see before and after photos - make sure the lighting is the same in the two sets of photos as flashguns can make cellulite and lines & Wrinkles look better even without a treatment. Make sure that the photos are results performed by the clinic and even better the practitioner who will be treating you. 2. Find out where the system is manufactured - many very well marketed systems are rebadged cheap imports from the far east and are low quality and could actually harm you. European and US made systems are generally of higher quality and will have met higher standards. 3. Check the system has a CE-Medical Mark - this is a higher standard set by the European regulatory authorities to show that the system is suitable for medical use. American systems will have FDA approval. 4. Ask How many treatments are needed - make sure that
this is understood right from the beginning so that you can budget and set your expectations accordingly 5. Ask about side effects - in the more effective treatments there maybe some side effects which should be explained to you before hand. If there are no side effects, usually the treatment is ineffective. 6. What is the recovery like - check to see if any aftercare is needed, any dietary requirements are necessary and if any compression garments need to be worn. 7. Meet the surgeon - Make sure you have a full consultation with the surgeon performing any surgery on you, before you decide to have treatment and not just on the day of surgery. Good clinical practice guidelines recommend a 14 day cooling off period. 8. Ask for a written quote before treatment and avoid any time-limited offers for surgery. Competitions for cosmetic surgery is frowned up by the regulators.

products that we ladies put on our skin every day. I worked in a salon for a while and then went into teaching beauty therapy and then became Head of Department. After a few years, I decided that what I really wanted to do was to run my own beauty business.”
Smita is named after the owner, Smita Ahluwalia, who works alone and knows all of her clients personally.
What is it about beauty therapy that attracts you? “I enjoy working with skin and I love to see great results to sun damage or wrinkles and how you can improve the skin using advanced skin care treatments. Many clients worry about ageing skin and so I am very glad to be able to offer them skin care without the need to resort to implants or Botox. And I have found that my degree in chemistry has helped me research the best ingredients for products.”
wanted to find out if there was somewhere in North London which offered really special beauty treatments. A place which was maybe a little exclusive and hidden away where I could really feel pampered. I was immediately recommended to call “Smita”. I was told that Smita was a “hidden gem” in Woodside Park with a very loyal clientele who jealously clung on to their appointment slots month after month and year after year.
A beauty treatment with Smita is by appointment only, so I called her up to find out if I could make a booking and also to ask her a few questions about her business. Smita was delighted to hear from me and swiftly and expertly carried out a consultation over the phone to assess what the best kind of treatment might be. Just from this very brief discussion, I already felt that I was in the hands of an expert whose approach to skin care was far more in depth than I have experienced before. I asked Smita a few questions about her business. How come she works alone? “I have tried to hire therapists in the past but my clients won’t have it!” she laughs. “But, anyway, I realise that I really enjoy being hands on. The personal touch is very important to me. I customise treatments for every client depending on their needs and their skin type and I have always wanted to make sure that my clients feel genuinely cared for so that high tech treatments never feel mechanical. I incorporate massage into my treatments so my clients are being looked after for all of the time that they are with me. It’s a completely holistic approach.” You sound very passionate about your work. How did you get into beauty therapy? “I graduated in chemistry, so I was always interested in the kind of 64 8 Jj u Un N eE 2 20 01 14 4 4
I heard that you work from home. “We recently moved to lovely surroundings in Woodside Park. Your treatment will be in a little cottage at the end of our garden, so it’s nice and peaceful.” I booked in for a facial and a massage in four weeks’ time (the earliest slot!). I arrived at Smita’s beautiful Victorian home and buzzed on the side entrance and was let into to a beautiful and inviting garden. Sure enough, at the end of a winding path was Smita’s very pretty cottage. I felt a wave of calm and tranquility engulfing me. And the treatment? Amazing. Smita’s cottage is so warm and cosy, with lovely, relaxing music playing. She really understood my skin and she was able to give me such a detailed skin analysis. Smita then explained what treatment I should have and what to expect from it. And Smita definitely has a special touch. Her hands are warm but firm and she just gets right into the tension spots. All the way through, I felt very genuinely cared for. Smita is based in Woodside Park, Finchley N12 Bookings by appointment only. Call 07956-946373.

“I headed to The House of Rush in London’s Piccadilly, where I was eased into a reclining leather black throne” A tiny amount of Elemis Lime and Ginger Salt Scrub Glow was mixed in with Frangipani Monoi Body Oil, which made the scrub feel luxurious rather than scratchy. My feet were then soaked in a warm tub of creamy Skin Nourishing Milk Bath and patted dry. The therapist began cuticle work, making my toes look immediately more presentable - something I always neglect in DIY pedis. The Frangipani Monoi Body Oil was then used again for a luxurious foot massage, which felt like it unknotted all the tension from my soles. As a finishing touch, my toes were painted with an Essie One Of A Kind coral polish and massaged with Exotic Cream Moisturising Mask, right up to my shins. As a celebration, I went out and bought some new toe-baring sandals. Slipper boots, you’re officially in retirement - these feet look too good to hide.

Daguerreotypes In this age of video-recording, will we ever again reminisce by flicking through the family photo album?
I
hope so, providing the compilers have noted the names and details relating to the photographs. Sadly the grandest albums, those Victorian monsters with embossed leather covers, full of images of stern faced and elaborately dressed men and women rarely have such information and so we will never know who those people really were. The same may be said of the little boy illustrated above wearing an American Unionist uniform from the Civil War of 1861 – 65. The print is Tintype, a photographic process which emanated from the Daguerreotype, the earliest recorded means of photographic printing, first described in 1839. This was a complicated, lengthy and expensive procedure requiring a studio and the result was an image on glass, normally displayed in an individual leather presentation case. Tintype, introduced during the 1860’s, was simpler and could be achieved in a portable booth. Thus the photographer could travel anywhere and the print produced immediately.

This little soldier was obviously taken in a studio but it begs the question why was he dressed up like this? Surely it is unthinkable that he was actually going into battle. Astoundingly, not so. A by-no-means-rare episode during the closing stages of the war at a tiny stockade called Fort Tyler records that 18yr old Confederate Sergeant McNeil was despatched to raise recruits from the local town. He returned with just three boys, all under the age of 14. Once fully armed they fought for 7¾ hours before surrender and were later described as ‘True Heroes of the Southern Cause’. But I am told by the experts that the best explanation for our young Unionist is that he was so dressed – at considerable expense – and photographed as a souvenir for his father while the latter was on active duty. That seems logical but at the moment it is supposition. Is there by chance anyone amongst you, dear readers, with a better answer or even an idea of who this young soldier might be? BOWLES & WYER
Your Garden: The Most Forgotten Room of Your House T
he housing market crash led many people to stay in the homes they were in and improve them or even extend, rather than moving up the property ladder. Even now as the market steadily improves, we are seeing an increase in extensions and renovations. Extending a property normally makes one think about an additional bedroom or maybe a larger kitchen diner – the most forgotten extra room we have at home is our garden. Improving your garden is a cost-effective way of extending your home. You will argue, no doubt, that in this country you cannot spend time in your garden all year round or use it like you would a room. But this all comes down to design. If designed correctly, there is no reason why a garden cannot be used in all seasons as an extra room to your house, whilst adding significant value to your property. Often a garden will be landscaped according to what is already there. This is where a good and a great landscape designer differ. The brief is everything; understanding how you want to use your garden and interpreting this information to deliver imaginative solutions. Bowles & Wyer is an award-winning landscape company, based on the Herts/Bucks border, who believe that successful design is distinguished by imagination and intuition; finding solutions from unexpected sources. Partner, John Wyer, explains “We transform our client’s ideas into living, responsive landscapes”. Bowles & Wyer offer professional design services, with every designer trained to at least degree level and possessing vast experience and expertise. Whilst the design is hugely important, there are three principal phases to consider whether you are planning an extension or transforming a garden: design, build and finish (or in gardening terms, aftercare). Key to the transformation, is continuity of workmanship. If you were adding a new room to your house, the architect would be involved at each stage to ensure the build reflected the design and was not misinterpreted in any way. This continuity of craftsmanship is also paramount when transforming your garden. Bowles & Wyer have extensive in-house technical experience and knowhow, and can therefore look after the ‘build’ phase of your project without subcontracting the work or you needing to find a contractor to build the design. Bowles & Wyer offer garden design, build and aftercare to ensure the design meets your requirements and captures your imagination; the build successfully interprets the design and is of the highest quality; and the aftercare ensures longevity of the project. Many companies will offer only design or one other element, but at Bowles & Wyer the importance and ability to see the project all the way through is what differentiates the company. In the words of famous landscape gardener, Humphrey Repton: “No work can be so well completed as under the eye of the person who designs the improvement”. So do not forget your garden – it can extend your home, put value on your property and offer enjoyment all year round. Bowles & Wyer - garden design, garden build & garden aftercare. “Once again I was delighted with my Bridgman garden furniture. It scores top marks for comfort and looks. The rattan chairs I bought last year wintered outside and look new. Ordering was easy and delivery very fast. Thank you.” - Claire Addison

Several different styles of furniture are available to choose from with waterproof cushions. For the 2014 season, there is an additional option to introduce a ‘pop’ of colour with brilliant waterproof scatter cushions.

Bridgman continues to push the boundaries and innovate and in recent years the company has developed an exciting range of outdoor cushions. These sumptuous waterproof cushions are exclusive to Bridgman and have been designed to withstand rain, hail even frost and snow. So conveniently leave everything outside and use the furniture whenever you want. As well as being waterproof the cushions are highly stain resistant and almost impossible to mark. Spills can be wiped straight off and ground in stains can be easily washed away. The cushions have been tested with red wine (what a waste!), coffee, sun cream and chlorine to name but a few. Origin pools PERFECTING THEIR CRAFT SINCE 1982
S
ince Origin’s inception over thirty years ago the world has changed considerably. A recent survey in The Times showed our changing tastes are never more marked than when it comes to the possessions we desire most. Today as a nation the top three on our wish lists are a high performance car, a designer watch and a swimming pool. In the eighties people were content with a car phone and a dishwasher! Today the world of swimming at home couldn’t be more different. Beautifully designed buildings nestling in gardens, within easy reach of the home, or in many cases attached, as a perfectly blended extension, using all the same colours and fabric as the main house. Interiors are constantly changing too. Recently the trend has moved away from the timber appearance, and gone towards painted finishes, resulting in a brighter state-of-the-art feel that reflects light beautifully, and shows off the pool to great effect. Origin’s designers can sense these changes of taste, and are constantly looking for exciting embellishments to add to what is their tried and tested principle - to create carefully designed
well built constructions that benefit from only the best new innovations that the increasingly sophisticated swimming pool world has to offer. And talking of principles, Origin’s main objective has always been to take every single project from concept to completion - meaning that the teams, many of whom have been with the company since those early days, are responsible for every element of the process internally, from design to building and the final fitting. This makes Origin an exception in the complex world of pool construction, and goes some way to explaining why the company is recognised as the leading builder of indoor pool houses. A reputation acquired over thirty years of technical progress. Today the company’s flagship range is the Olympic, widely accepted as the ultimate way to swim at home. But at the late development stage is the Eco Eco Pool House Pool House, an innovative design that benefits from today’s eco thinking and is set to change the rules of pool house technology. So Origin’s world has never looked better. They change with the times, constantly listen to the thoughts and ideas of their increasingly sophisticated clientele, and deliver their finished products beyond expectations. That is the Origin difference. Visit the website, read the new literature, and talk to Origin about what is possible for you, your home and your family.
Contact us For full details of all Origin’s pool houses the very best way to start things off is to get in touch with Fiona on 01895 823366, or email fiona@originleisure.com Fiona will send you brochures, fill you in with all the details, and even arrange for you to meet one of our directors on site to discuss the possibilities. On average, people spend in excess of £30,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space. There are a multitude of choices when it comes to creating your dream kitchen...
Y
ou need to decide on the space that is required over and above your units, worktops, appliances and sink unit. For example, if you have children, is extra eating space required? Are you looking to entertain and relax aswell as prepare and cook the evening meal? Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. The interior style of the rest of your home could dictate the style of your kitchen space, especially if it is open-plan, so you need to take this into consideration.
The design of your kitchen can cover a variety of themes... Contemporary kitchens The sleek look will provide instant gratification. Providing a more open feeling adds to the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs. French country kitchen Combining rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. We are talking an Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. Freestanding features and copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger, rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware all combine to give you that French country feel. Shaker Style kitchen This design appeals to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island can make an attractive addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in. Retro Kitchen A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households 60 june2014
of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points. Cabinets & Worktops Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Chrome is effective and never dates. Avoid wooden worktops near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. You could also mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces. Kitchen Flooring The flooring in your kitchen space is as important as the kitchen itself, so you need to get it right. Take advice from a flooring expert, or consult your kitchen designer. You can find more information and choices on kitchen flooring later in this guide. Kitchen Lighting Safety comes first in any kitchen, so for high activity areas where you’ll be preparing food you need plenty of illumination, so work out which areas you’ll be using for practical purposes and install task lighting – i.e., focused, directional, bright light. Think of lighting as a design tool to emphasise or detract from good or bad features in a room. You can find more information and choices on kitchen lighting later in this guide. A bespoke kitchen will be tailor made for both the space and you. For pure luxury, this is the best that money can buy. You can have it designed especially for your needs and tastes, and built by the best in the business.

Extend your kitchen The kitchen is the heart of the home so extending it to create a big open plan space to relax with the family and wow your friends is a good call.
A
kitchen extension is one of the most popular home improvement projects and one that’ll really add to the enjoyment and value of your home. In this article we look at the practicalities of planning your kitchen extension.
First things first You’ll be investing a lot of money in this project so ask yourself how you plan to use the space: Do you want a more flexible space for the family to enjoy? Do you want a space for entertaining? Do you want a separate utility room? Do you want to bring the outside in with doors opening on to the garden? As well as considering the here and now think about 5-10 years down the line and the changing dynamics of your family. While play space may be important now, in a few years’ time it’s homework and hangout space they’ll be after. Option 1: Knocking through Knocking down a stud partition wall between your kitchen and dining room is the simplest option. Get a structural engineer in to check that the wall isn’t load bearing. If it is you’ll need an RSJ (rolled steel joint) to take the strain. If your property is leasehold you’ll need permission from the freeholder.
Option 2: Extending out If you’ve got time, space and budget this is the perfect blank canvas for you to create your ultimate kitchen. With no pre-existing constraints to work around, you can decide exactly what goes where, from your granite island to the position of your sockets. Got your heart set on a contemporary glass ‘box’ that brings the outside in?
Option 3: Adding on Another popular home improvement is installing a glazed or sky-lit roof over the galley side return on a Victorian terrace. Opening up the space makes it work that much harder and who doesn’t want a wider, lighter kitchen?
How much does an kitchen extension cost? The Halifax Home Improvement Survey says the minimum cost of a kitchen extension is £20,000. Experts suggest that a kitchen extension can increase the value of your home by as much as 11% so if you’ve got space and budget, go for it. 62 june2014
Getting planning permission for a kitchen extension Good news: planning permission often isn’t necessary for small extensions. If you’re knocking through from kitchen to dining room it isn’t usually required. Neither is it necessary if you’re converting a garage, although if you’re enlarging your building’s footprint you’ll need to run it past your local planning officer. However if you live in a listed building, conservation area or area of outstanding natural beauty, you’ll need to ask your local authority for permission. Likewise if you’re planning a substantial kitchen extension you’ll need permission and full architectural drawings of the layout and elevations. Planning applications cost around £150 in England and take around eight weeks to process. It’s worth stating the obvious - all regardless of how big or small - must comply with Building Regulations. As a general rule it’s best to submit full plans to your local authority building control department to be on the safe side. The practicalities Bear in mind that moving water, gas and electrical points will add to the cost and complexity of the work. You’ll need a Corgi registered installer if you’re installing a gas boiler or cooker and all electrical work requires a compliance certificate under Part P of Building Regs. Another key consideration is drainage. Outlet pipes for sinks, dishwashers and washing machines need direct access to external drainage so these often dictate the layout of your kitchen extension. Remember if you start moving pipes you need to check that all work complies with Building Regulations. Consider the flow of natural light at different times of day as this will inform where you need artificial lighting. Some people choose to position their table where there’s most natural light, others prefer their main workspace to be naturally lit. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Light and airy conservatory style kitchens can get hot in summer, cold in winter and subsequently suffer from damp and condensation. You’ll need expert architect advice to find the right solution for your property. One final thing While the extension is being carried out there will be times when your kitchen is unusable so if you have the space to create a makeshift ‘kitchen’ it’ll be a real stress-saver. It’s only short term, so consider moving to a friend or relative’s. Bear in mind that a kitchen extension is not a quick job. Depending on the scale you could be talking a couple of weeks or a couple of months. Just keep telling yourself, it’ll be worth it in the end!

Contemporary Kitchen
Design Tips
Upon moving into a new home, many people want to redesign their kitchen. For many people the kitchen is the centre of the home. It is the place where we create our culinary masterpieces, and gather with friends and family.
O
ne trend that is particularly sought-after is a contemporary kitchen design. The first thing that separates a contemporary kitchen from other styles is its clean lines and minimalist feel. Although some people equate contemporary with cold, it does not have to be so. “Cool” materials such as glass and steel used in a contemporary kitchen design can be “warmed” up by the strategic use of accessories or colour. Six major components that make up a contemporary kitchen are: Glass Glass is an important feature of minimalist design. Glass can be incorporated into contemporary kitchen design through windows, lighting, shelving or toppers for an island. Cabinetry can also have glass doors which provide a visual of the inside.
Metal The most popular type of metal used in the design of a contemporary kitchen is stainless steel. It is most often used in appliances such as refrigerators, ovens and dishwashers. The use of stainless steel gives an urban feel to a kitchen. Lighting When designing a contemporary kitchen, lighting is key. Many contemporary designs incorporate recessed lighting into ceilings and underneath cabinets. If however, you don’t’ like recessed lighting, track lighting or fixtures made of metal or glass can also impart a contemporary feel. Marble/Granite Marble and granite are usually used for countertops but fit well within contemporary kitchen design. They are both cool to the touch, allow for
64 june2014
sharp clean lines and depending on the colour and design chosen really impart a big city feel to your kitchen. Colour As part of the minimalist design ethic of a contemporary kitchen, “cool” colours are usually used. “Cool” colours are those that come to mind; blues, greens, grey, silver and even black and white. Using these colours in your kitchen invokes a modern feel. When putting these elements together, four other design points to consider are: backsplash, cabinetry design, appliances and accessories. When it comes to backsplash, most contemporary kitchens use either tile or metal; your personal preference will decide. As far as cabinets are concerned, some designs don’t require pulls to open, while others use metal hardware. Having a built in design also provides great storage (because clutter does not fit into contemporary design at all). Appliances are an easy way to impart some contemporary style into your kitchen. As I mentioned earlier, many refrigerators, freezers, ovens and the like come in stainless steel. If you don’t really like the look of metal, all black or all white appliances also project a contemporary feel. The last component of contemporary kitchen design is that of accessories. Accessories are another way to easily modernise your kitchen, with a minimalist design. Contact a luxury kitchen designer who specialises in bespoke kitchens and will lead you to the contemporary kitchen of your dreams!

Aquarooms Bathrooms makes major changes to keep a head of the field: After 18 months at our new location
Things can not be better “The future starts in Now ” may sound like the title of the next Sci-Fi movie, but Grant Bliben (pictured), the managing director of Aquarooms, is using it with good reason as he extols his vision for the brand and its store. The change of strategy and to move its showroom from Southgate to Barnet was a main factor. After being at Hampden Square, Southgate showroom for over 25years it was time to move so we Opened the new showroom in Barnet with a high street position easy parking and large frontage and started again with the latest in European products using the manufacturers with the best back up and support . We still show over 22 fully tiled Bathroom settings with a large selection of accessories, mirrors and cabinets with the showroom emphasis on Design and Installation. The market is split between different buyers now there are those who will buy by price regardless of the quality or make, we will try to match prices with our price promise, so even the internet is not always the cheapest option sometimes it’s cheaper local. The thrust of this strategy, as explained by Grant, is to openly reposition the Aquarooms brand locally more towards the “design installation and maintenance aspects of the business. But “Aquarooms is on a journey to get from being among the pack of Bathroom Showrooms to a place where we’re a business that leans towards firmly being a local bathroom specialist. Grant declares. “The high level goal of the Aquarooms is to create a Local respected Brand for its customers. A place where professional advice and help is given backed up by a team professional general maintenance services. Grant the owner has over 35 years of plumbing experience with the conceptual designs of Leading Manufactures has resulted in a completely new look Showroom within the bathroom industry. Whether your room is bijou or spacious, there are settings to suit all needs and life styles. Aquarooms studio has fully tiled shower trays and wet room floors, which have been produced using Elements, an environmentally friendly waterproof structural foam. The unique properties of this product have enabled tiled curved shower walls, seats & decorative mosaic features to be incorporated into designs. So how is it changing, “The new showroom has been a great success for us like, our focus is one service 1st and retail 2nd it’s our customers that are guiding the brand towards its new goals. Our main customer wants an experience there enjoy in an environment that’s as much about inspiration, service and expertise as it is about price value and availability - “We want to be a design partner with our customers,” is how Grant puts it. Aquarooms are main Dealers for Villeroy & Boch Bathrooms Showing a large selection of there Baths Sanitryware, brassware and Furniture, Also 68 june2014
on display is Italian ceramic manufactures Art Ceram and Hidra pushing sanitryware design to the limits. Other leading manufactures include Duravit, Toto, Majestic, Matki, Fiora, Bongio, Bossini, Hansgrohe, Keuco, Crosswater, Bathroom Origins and HIB Grant, believes that this new approach sets them off in the right direction and it already seems to be having a positive effects on business and its customer satisfaction scores go along with the theory. We’re proud of what we do and believe it’s great value and we’re happy to have it compared in a valid way. We are a professional company working from high street front premises where you can come and discuss your work to someone in person at our showroom & offices. The National Association of Estate Agents appoints a
New President Simon Gerrard, Managing Director of Martyn Gerrard Estate Agents, appointed President
T
he In a ceremony held in Central London on 13th June, Simon Gerrard took over the Presidency of the National of Association of Estate Agents (NAEA). The NAEA is the UK’s leading professional body for estate agency and is part of a group that represents over 13,000 members who practise across all aspects of property services in the UK and overseas. As President one of Simon’s main aims is to raise the public awareness of the Association and ensure anyone who is selling or buying a home actively seeks out an NAEA member. Simon Gerrard said “Many members of the public believe all estate agents are qualified and professional. However this is not the case. Not ALL estate agents are qualified; to become licensed by the NAEA means the agent has studied for and passed a nationally recognised qualification in the legal, technical and practical aspects of estate agency and property”. “By using a licensed NAEA agent you can be sure you are consulting a qualified and experienced agent who can give you professional up to date advice and guidance. And for peace of mind a licensed NAEA agent also has Professional Indemnity Insurance and Client Money Protection”. Simons role will also involve ensuring estate agents adhere to the associations code of practice – an aspect that Simon has been heavily involved in shaping over the years, designed to make sure members provide the most professional, efficient and user-friendly service. These practises have been exemplified at Martyn Gerrard for more than 50 years and Simon relishes the chance to help standardise the industry practises to emulate those held dear by all at Martyn Gerrard. Having been in overall charge of the day to day operations at Martyn Gerrard since 2000, Simon has continued to uphold the Company’s tradition of friendly service and high professional standards, while at the same time introducing a new dynamic aspect to the business by embracing the latest innovative ideas and technologies. If you are selling or buying a property in North & North West London contact your nearest Martyn Gerrard branch – each is licensed by the NAEA.
About Martyn Gerrard Martyn Gerrard Estate Agents are an independent family run firm. Established in 1964 the company celebrated its 50th anniversary in May this year. YOUR FIRST VIEWINGS WILL BE ONLINE Today’s buyers are increasingly savvy; they research the local area online, review brochures and floor plans, as well as look at different property portals. And they do all of this before they make a single call to an agent, or even consider stepping foot in a house. In this increasingly digital world it’s important to get everything right online. Gina Antoniou, Head of Office at Savills Barnet, shares her tips on getting it right online to ensure potential buyers make that important call and view properties...
PROPERTY PORTALS Statistics show that over 70% of
property searches start online and 50% of the traffic on Savills websites comes from property portals (Savills data). With this in mind, make sure your agent advertises their properties on the major search portals.
PRESENTATION With information at a buyer’s fingertips, make sure your agent has organised good quality, professional photography of your home. A professional
photographer is trained to make the best of a property. This can make the difference between a potential buyer picking up the telephone or clicking onto the next property.
BROCHURES & FLOOR PLANS A professional brochure is essential; some agents can offer brochures with interactive features that over lay the floor plan. This helps potential buyers to really visualise the space and layout of a property.
VIDEOS Your agent may be able to produce a short video of your property. This will quickly and simply demonstrate the key features to buyers in an interesting and easy to view way. Vendors are often concerned that a video, the brochure and all the other information a potential buyer can find online is giving away too much. This really isn’t the case. In today’s fast moving world everyone wants information at their fingertips. If they can’t find what they are looking for they’ll
move on and look at something else. With all the technological developments available today agents are able to better assess buyers. Your agent should be able to tell you how many times your property has been searched and how many links have been clicked online. With all this information available, when potential buyers do pick up the telephone we know they are already serious, qualified buyers. If you want to find out more about how careful online marketing can help sell your home, contact Savills.
